Day 10 World Championship Snooker Extra

Hello again, two matches for the price of one tonight because there

were quarterfinal places up for grabs in both of the matches and we

will see Barry Hawkins against Graeme Dott shortly, but first, to

the defending champion, world number one, Mark Selby, who was attempting

to book his place in the last date against a very game Chinese acumen,

Xiao Guodong. Selby had a 10-6 overnight lead and we pick them up

in the company of Peter Ebdon and Dennis Taylor.

Thank you. Frame 17. Xiao Guodong tie-break. Just Mac -- Xiao Guodong

to break. They looked to be a time, just five and a half hours for these

frames that have been played in the last two sessions but it look for a

time of their Mark Selby had a upper hand and he would run away with this

but winning those last two frames last night, by Xiao Guodong, gives

him a bit of hope here. It does, I have been very impressed with him.

He's been a player for ten years and you would think that if he had been

a good player he would have done better so far but he really took

Mark Selby to the sword here and Mark had to produce two very good

clearances to be in front and not be all square but this boy can play. I

am surprised we have not seen more of him before. A little bit naive,

she had a game when he was 60 balls in front of yesterday and he should

have made that safe but that was one that Mark Selby ended up winning. He

is actually ten points ahead on points scored in this match.

Amazing, he is for frames behind. -- four frames behind. We didn't play

the best safety shot, and that was why he is now in trouble. Just play

a containing safety and get the cue ball back to the baulk end. We are

writing to the second round of this tournament now and Mark Selby has

not yet the century. Yes, very surprising.

Mark Selby is so hard to beat and even when he's not playing at his

best to find a way to win. That was a bit too thin. The rattle in the

jaws has made it a better safety shot than it was. Yes, I think Mark

Selby can win the longer matches, his game is tailor-made for it.

There is a couple of reds he can play the pot on but too risky. He

may be concerned he will not knock anything towards the right corner

here. It needs to miss the browser it to be a good safety. He has. It

is a good safety, that one. -- the brown.

Has to be a little careful with this thin safety shot, he is playing to

put this into the corner. A long way away but he was making sure of the

cue ball. You can see here the advantage of

getting that cue ball tight to the baulk cushion. Plenty of reds he can

hit and he has to avoid the kiss on the red on the right-hand side

cushion as you like so as to catch this just right. Too thick, much too

thick. Result! Is it a result? Well, maybe not. I think Mark can just get

past the blue for this red. And he could. Not a nice angle on

the blue but I think the pink may be available. It just show you is you,

that one good safety shot, get the cue ball tight on the baulk cushion

and force the mistake from his opponent.

He said the cue ball a couple of inches too far. I don't think the

black is available into the left-hand corner but he can clearly

play the red next to the pain can get onto the pink again into the

right-hand corner. Mark Selby now is becoming the past master at when you

get a chance to make sure you score heavily. I know he first started

playing he started in a snooker club in Leicester. Did you spot the

talent straightaway? When I first saw him play his cue action was a

little bit long and you just felt, has he really got it? When did you

first notice that he was destined for the top? He had always got a top

safety game but is break-building wasn't good enough and I always say

this in commentary that Neil Roberts started playing when he first came

over and he is the most improved player I have ever seen and Mark

Selby was not going to be a journey man, he was always a decent player

but never was going to be a top 16 player and all of a sudden he got

cueing close to the cue ball and improved 40 points overnight and now

he has one of the best players we have. He is so solid.

I don't think I have ever seen anybody work harder as well. He

would play eight hours at day and never stop. I think that is the

secret to success, the hard work. You can only put in the hard work if

you actually love the game and you want to do it. He is set to go for

the yellow, I am sorry, the pink. It is OK. Straight would have been

better. He just underhit that slightly. A little look up to the

balcony where his supporters are. He was not happy with that one so a

little bit of work to do with this cue ball. He has been trying for

three shots to get a nice angle onto that red to get to that black. He

has potted 18 out of 18 with the rest but he has a little bit to do

with the cue ball here because identity can play a slow enough to

get onto the black so if he goes around the back to get onto the pink

in the middle, it's a good shot this.

Yes, an excellent shot. Of the cue ball, and the pace to perfection. --

he gets the path of the cue ball. Can you get the black back onto its

own spot? It was OK this time. He can either go around the back of the

black or screw it direct. I think he will have to go around the back of

the black. Well, like you, I thought he may

have screwed around the back of the black. He would not have fancied

missing it but there is a bit more to do here. No problem.

He will now try to bring reds into play. Yes, the angle he will leave

himself on the black, he would like to hit the left-hand side of the

three reds in front. The one on the left, he would like to get that one,

because the bottom red pots. There was always a problem of catching a

full ball but he has pushed one to the middle. He got some action on

the cue ball. He just wants the white ticket them but the back spin

was still on it and that is why he is on this reds to the right middle.

That is all you are looking for, and easy ball to continue your break

with. Just stopped short of the baulk line, so he is OK. There is a

possible 75 remaining. A couple of reds. But still needed after this

colour. There, you see, in actual fact, a

red and a black will put him 70 points ahead with just 67 remaining.

Not far from the winning line in this frame. With all of his

experience he knew a quick start was paramount importance.

The black to leave his opponent needing a snooker. We were talking

about Marx attributes and the biggest one is his temperament. This

is our frame where he he shouldn't give Xiao Guodong any chance to get

back into the match. 70 accounting, very good. He has had to work for

this. It wasn't easy, he has had a brown and blue. Five pinks. Now four

blacks. It is his highest break of the match.

A quick glance at the scoreboard, red, black, or red, black, were

getting up to the 100. I think this red, close to the pink, is available

to the left middle. Well, he tried to disturb it and he is just about

on it. He hit more of the pink and he wanted to but, as I say, he is

just on it. He sent me a text late yesterday afternoon saying he can't

make a century, he can now. That is absolutely superbly played and that

is the 39th century of this year 's BetFred World Championship. The

record is 86. We have not started the quarterfinals yet. Well, that is

not in but it doesn't matter. Xiao Guodong stayed in his seat and Mark

Selby the first century break of the match and now five clear. 1186. --

11-6. Mark Selby to break. It was certainly a great start,

wasn't it, his first century of the tournament. He is looking at me in

the commentary box and saying he has made one because he hasn't made a

century before in this tournament but what he has been looking at is

Match Play and then he has been perfect. Well, it has gone in. He

put his hand up to apologise. The idea wasn't the pot. The idea was to

get the safety but he parted the red and coming under the baulk and he is

nicely potted the yellow. I thought he might have taken an opportunity

there, in particular with the black tied up to come off the yellow with

paste and into the side of the cluster. Here was the shot. Much too

thin really, but the pocket got in the way. Yes, he

will be playing that shot now into the pink that if this goes wrong he

hasn't got another red fall back on but full in the face on this pink.

Oh, boy, he could not have hit that any better. He could not have hit

that any better. If he wants to break the ball is open, that is it.

Pink full in the face and if you do that with stun, that is why the cue

ball stays in the middle of the table. As super shot.

, I think you, like me haven't seen too much of Xiao Guodong play before

but I think we're both impressed at have the break bills. Most players

would have tucked yellow into the bunch rather than the blue into the

bunch of the second shot but he is very, very good in the balls. He has

made over 100 competitive centuries as well, which is always a sign.

Obviously his slight problem here is the black out of cushion so he will

have two concentrate on the five other colours. He has gone through

three qualifying matches and, believe it or not, this is his 72nd

frame at this year 's World Championship. You need some stamina,

don't you? All of the qualifiers are coming in match sharp but when you

consider they have already had four days of play before they get to the

marathon of 17 days, you need to be fit, and you said you don't need to

get any illnesses during that space of time as well. It is a long time

to keep your form. You have to be mentally strong as well. There is

the side bar. 47 points from this position will bring him to the

snooker is required stage. I don't know what snooker players are

supposed to look like, but he looks more like an accountant to me than a

snooker player. He has looked at the outside one. He is straight on this

one but if he is straight then I see no reason why he can't just roll it

in for the pink in the middle. Obviously when you are behind a shot

you see it differently, but can he get the right side of the blue?

Well, he couldn't in the end so he has decided to play for baulk

colour. Well, that is a very surprising

mess. The frame was there for the taking there and that may be the

first sign that Xiao Guodong is struggling now in this match. Yes,

one of those, particularly on these clots, if you do not get slightly

behind the ball it decelerates likely end you will always hit the

object ball a bit thin and that is what happened there, it is only a

fraction. It makes all the difference. Of course, if you miss

when you are in at this level it can be very costly. Mark has already

shown what good touchy is in this afternoon. We expect to make the

most of this chance. He has the problem, as Xiao had, the black is

not available. The former reds around the pink spot

area look nice and easy in open play but they are all in the way of each

other. There is a red on the extreme right that he could play a cannon

into the red in the black and he was looking at that for a second. I

don't know if he can just run through and get onto the top right

of the three that were neither black. Looking at that picture, you

probably can. Keep the noise down, please. That

surprises me, that shot. This is tough to get out to that pink again.

Yes, it was never easy that in the place he had to play it. Just. It,

so he will be disappointed in that. Xiao gets a second chance. Trying to

force the cue ball up the table. That is what made the pot difficult.

Not bad. He needs to be using the rest of this pink. He has got the

same problem that Mark Selby had before. All of these red seem to be

covering one another for the right corner pocket.

I think he was trying to get to the red. Three reds behind the pink and

the want of the right of those. And another one to the bottom of the

three goes into this corner he could have done with a bit more pace on

the cue ball, digging down, they are never easy, these. Well, he will be

disappointed. They are never easy when you are digging down. I

expected him to get it. Yes, and that was his second chance in this

frame. Usually you are happy when you are playing at the top players

to have one chance in a frame. The next two Redstone to be a

problem. To get the frame in this visit he has to possibly leave an

angle on one of the reds to move the red and black out of the way. I

didn't expect such a big belt as that. We played for the blue in the

middle. Four points the lead. Still not

there. Nice angle on the blue. He's played

that really well. A red and a reasonably high colour.

101 in the first frame, 51 and counting in this frame. He's on a

mission again. It was like a salad bar with all the

different colours he's potted in this break. Only the second black in

the break. So it's Xiao, trying to keep his

hopes alive, to break. He's got to win this frame.

Terrific pot. A helpful little flick on the blue there helped keep the

cue ball short of the baulk line. Played that positional shot off the

blue absolutely inch perfect. It's not beyond the realms of

possibility that Mark Selby is going to win out now at 13-6. It shows the

standard you have to get. This is the standard you need to get

to. Played that with a trace of left

hand side. Just didn't stop the pace of the cue ball. Right in the heart

of the pocket. Played for a gap for a red to the

right corner. He always knew if he overran it, he'd have the one to the

right middle. Needs 41 to get to a match-winning

situation. This could be a frame-winner, this shot. Got the

joint perfectly. Brought another two reds into play. Perhaps he would

have wished to play it a little bit harder on this red.

Can he bend it? I don't think so. I don't think he can. Plus with the

red close to the cue ball, stopping him playing with that bit of left

hand side. He's having to play safe. Maybe he thought he couldn't get

into the cue ball with the previous black.

When he hit it, I thought perfect, but the cue ball ran on a little bit

and one of the reds he cannoned didn't move. That

Had a chance of a red to the right centre there, but fair play. He's

basically saying to Mark, you're going to have to win it, I'm not

going to give it you. Let's have a look at the possibility of a plant,

two reds in the middle of the table. Plants to the corner.

Depends how close they are. Can't get through to the two balls but

he's thinking of a two, three ball plant. Close enough so he could turn

it, hit the first on the right, pushes the second one to the left.

Might be worth playing. Don't see an alternative.

Little flick off the green. Thin cut on here.

That was a little unlucky. That's what you don't do when you're

trailing 12-6. Last night on this table, Neil

Robertson played the exact same shot and he said it just drifted up. Just

along that baulk line where you can get that.

Mark could have got a bit of cue ball. Red

Mark can't get through to it. There is a red in the middle of the table

he can get through to. Too thin. He knew he'd get the cover

with the two reds on the right hand side of the table.

Taking a risk. Round the back of the black. Avoid the red in the top

cushion. He didn't avoid the red near the top cushion. He's knocked

it over the corner. And I'm just trying to think of anything else

that could have gone wrong. Decided to get rid of the one that's

potting into the right hand corner. Going back on to its own spot.

Now 66 points in front with only 59 left on the table. Xiao's race has

been run. I think he's got a future in the

game, this young man. But you play Mark Selby at the Crucible and you

are always going to be up against it. He'll be disappointed, he'll

know he could have won at least three or four more frames than he

has done. Yes, and it's all a learning

experience I think. First time here, you've got to take the positives out

of it. It's all over but the hand shake

now. It doesn't matter. Congratulations.

Without breaking a lot of sweat really, Mark Selby is now through to

the quarter-final. He wins quite comfortably in the end by 13-6. I

don't feel as though I've peaked yet in this tournament. In a way I think

that's a good thing. Few peak too early you can only go down. I've

played OK, not great and not bad so still room for improvement. I don't

feel as much pressure as two years ago. Coming into this tournament

I've had the best season I've had as a professional which always helps

for confidence. Comfortable in the end this afternoon for the world

number one Mark Selby through to the quarter-finals for a seventh time in

his career. Another ex-champion, 2006 winner here Graeme Dott was

also in the mix to go through to the last eight. His was an uphill

struggle against Barry Hawkins because the Scot found himself 10-6

down going into the last session. This is right at the start, Willie

Thorn and John Virgo have teamed up for you.

Hand shakes all around as the curtain comes down between the

tables. And it's Graeme Dott that gets the first frame of the final

session under way. And it has to be said, very unlucky

not to be just two frames behind, because at 9-3, Graeme was all at

sea, he'd lost his timing and rhythm and then all of a sudden, he played

three fabulous frames. The only thing that let Graeme down

yesterday was his long potting. A few long pots that he didn't get

anywhere near. But in amongst the balls, you know, he produced the

three breaks. There was a century in there as well.

Peter, you know what he is like to play here at the Crucible. Graeme

Dott is one of the toughest match players I've seen for some time.

Very gritty, very determined. Great single ball Potter. Perhaps doesn't

score quite as heavily as some of the other top players. But a

wonderful match player. Never knows when he's beaten.

What judgment that was to get round the back of that red. Did very well

there. Amazing how he got round the back of

that. What judgment that was. Acknowledged there by Graeme. Graeme

has played a reasonably good safety shot. I don't think he can get past

the blue to this one at the left corner.

Not enough to pot it, that's for sure. The other one will pot. Just a

safety shot. He's covered the one to the right.

His two look to be on for the pocket. Yes, he can make that. Even

though they are going slightly to the left, if they are almost

touching he could make this. If the white was further across towards the

brown it would be unmissable this plant. They're almost touching. He's

thinking now about sending one ball on to the two reds to make it a

three-ball plant. That'll be very difficult to judge. Graeme has a

good opportunity to take on the plant. Very surprised he played it

that way. That is one thing about Graeme Dott

he doesn't possess the same amount of cue power as some of the other

top players so it was always going to be a big ask for Graeme to screw

back for the blue into the centre. Still going to take the blue. Can he

avoid the cannon on the green? He did.

Had he flicked the red, he could have put himself in an unusual

position. He had to play it at pace to avoid the cannon on the green but

as it comes up here, if it had have just flicked the red next to the

black, it would have been per ex-. Ex.

That depends what sort of frame of mind Graeme is in. He can play

attacking sometimes. There is a red above the black spot which is a very

tough pot. Coming round to take a look at the angle now. If he misses

this, it will be cannoning into the reds. Lots of pressure on this shot.

Superb shot from Graeme Dott. Very difficult to cut that back and he

had to go into the reds. Once again it could have turned out a little

better for him. OK he can pot the black but he's going to have to use

the extension and he's got to get a bit of action on it.

That's about the best he could do but it's still a tricky red that

he's faced with. And the black is only available into the one corner

pocket. It's far from an easy chance just yet.

That was the problem. He had to Force that to get back for the

black. Barry Hawkins has been left with a

choice of reds. Red to the left centre. That's not great because it

will be very difficult for him to get on a colour. He's just got

enough angle to be able to play the screw shot and avoid the black on

the way to the top cushion and screw off the top cushion for the black

into the left corner pocket. Needs to strike it well though. If he gets

a slightly heavy contact, the cue ball will be travelling close to the

black. Great shot. Played it beautifully.

It really is a terrific chance now for Barry Hawkins. At the moment, it

looks as if the black's just available into the one corner

pocket. Wrong side of the blue so he has a

bit of work to do. The two reds that are near the cushion there, one is

blocking the path for the black, he'd love to get on that in a few

shots' time. If he is the correct side of the

blue, he'll be back in position. And if he wishes now, he's got three

or four reds he can play for, but that one is blocking the black. He

would like to get on that at some stage.

He's played on it straightaway. That's bounced a little. He wanted

to be closer to the cushion. He's finished a little awkward but there

is no problem with cue power with Barry Hawkins. He didn't pot that

into the centre of the pocket, that's why he's ran out of positions

somewhat. Just watch where the red goes, in off the right. The cue ball

taken way off line. Barry Hawkins faced with a very

difficult and very tricky black here.

That needs to pull up and just about. He is just coming around to

check that red that is just above the three reds, being a left-hander

he just rolls the blue and he can take that.

He just needs to be a little bit careful with his positional side

here. If he is playing for the black. He played very well. He times

the ball beautifully, doesn't he, Dennis? I think I did yesterday, he

is very easy on the eye, he is a lovely player to watch, Barry. He

has a terrific technique. The only consolation is that he has not got

on the road. Where did that one come from? It was a little quick one that

he put in, that he does not normally do. He is telling himself off there.

This red will pass the black but it is not a gimme. He played for the

one that is closest to the cue ball but because he missed the black he

did not get on it. It is all about potting this, it doesn't matter

where he leaves the cue ball if he gets on the black but is not

straightforward. No. You could tell he didn't really fancy. Look at

where he has left the cue ball. Barry had a little bit of a result

there when he left the black not to leave anything easy. He will

properly get down and knock this red in after not getting the black in

from the spot. Yes, I thought so. It is amazing, isn't it? The angle he

has on the black here, the white is going to go towards the three reds.

It depends on the pace but the white will certainly go towards them. That

is just about as well as he could have expected there.

This isn't absolutely straightforward. He will be running

into the blue here. That was the trouble.

He has got to be a bit careful if he is going to roll up to the yellow.

Just about. He will want to get as close as possible but the number of

times you see a player not reaching, you know, putting themselves in

trouble but Graham has got a big problem here. He is 30 points

behind. There is no easy red to land on.

That is not very inviting and neither is that, no matter which

side he looks. I suppose if he could nestle on the one there that is the

nearest cue that he is pointing at, it might just possibly get away with

it. But very difficult. I think you also have the opportunity that he

would rather leave that red where it was to be perfectly honest, on the

right-hand side black cushion, but he could play with the spider or the

Swan and come off the baulk cushion, side cushion, and possibly side

cushion and hit that red. At the back, and the cue ball could

possibly finish somewhere around the right-hand black pocket and he would

be leaving a very difficult red into the left centre, but he doesn't have

too many options. He is just looking at that shot now and I think it is

the shot he is going to play. He has got two options with this shot. He

can either play to just nestle into this red, the problem with that as

he could be pushing it toward the right corner. If he plays it with

pace, he needs to catch the third cushion first. That is the line he

is after but he has misjudged and he will have to have another go at

this. Foul, miss. I think it is a good choice because if he catches it

right and doesn't leave the red that he is trying to hit, he is only

leaving a very difficult red into the left-centre so I think this is

the right choice. Yes, probably just got the first line slightly wrong

but that is where he wants to go. He is nearer the line this time.

That was an excellent shot from Graeme Dott. That literally couldn't

have worked out any better. It was well thought out. He was in a lot of

trouble there. He played a wonderful escape. Barry Hawkins looking to see

where he can put Graeme in the most trouble. He could flick of the red

that is next to the pink, but if he doesn't get a good cue ball he would

be leaving the red into the right corner that he is playing now. That

was quite a clever shot. You try to put the bread onto the black

cushion. It was a bit of insurance, to try and protect his 34 point

lead. He has covered the one that is near

the pocket but the one that is to the left of the pink will cut

impasse that red. He will be heading down towards the yellow. He is so

good at this type of shot, the number of times he popped the sort

of blues -- balls, which is very, very difficult.

There is no easy safety shot on for Graeme Dott here so he might be

forced into taking a very difficult pot on. As Peter said, 34 points

behind. If he takes the pot on to the left corner he will have to get

it. He doesn't like it. Graham does have a safety shot here but it is

very tough. The red that he is now playing, he needs to get this very

thin. That is a very, very good shot. Well played.

Barry Hawkins special coming up again. He won't cannon into the

black. Do you know, he's so good at that type shot, he really is. It is

the sort of shot that if you were wondering through the practice room,

you see the players practising for quite some time, because they know

it is going to come up quite a few times in a match, even off the break

of shot sometimes. it should be a frame clincher,

provided he rolls this one in off the black.

Yes, Dennis. The long red that Barry Hawkins knocked into the left hand

back pocket is a good example of how important it is to be able to play a

plane ball shot when you are hitting above the centre of the white, even

on these cloths, he could have pulled that thin so it was an

excellent pot. This very important contribution...

Barry Hawkins pulls further away from Graeme Dott. Graeme concedes.

Not the start it was after that Barry Hawkins would be delighted and

he extends his lead now, in 11 frames 26. -- to six.

A very good rate of shot. -- break off shot. This needs to be very

thin. That is a good cueball. A good response from gram. -- gram. Barry

may be tempted here by a long red into the right hand back pocket but

it is quite difficult to avoid the cannon on the black he almost has to

play this as a soft stand shot with right-hand side if he takes it on.

That is beautiful. Absolutely wonderful work from Barry Hawkins.

The secret to that type of shot is keeping the head still and Barry is

very good at that. You need to deliver the queue in a straight line

that it is very helpful if you can keep your head still. It is not

always easy to do that. Nicely played. In fact we can show

you a shot. Watch his head when he delivers the cue. Very, very good.

Barry is a little disappointed. Disappointed with his positional

play there. Just off straight the wrong way, really. Site, played

well, very nicely done. A deep screw with the right-hand side there. You

see the site coming off the cushion. He needs to be careful to not just

skim off the red here in playing that shot. He made sure he got into

which really well there. That was a fantastic shot. A degree of

difficulty with this shot. Loads of spin they are. -- there. From that

fantastic opening long red, he has created another opportunity to score

heavily once again. Very, very impressive stuff here from Barry

Hawkins. Graeme was hoping to get off to a very good start but it is

Barry who has done that. Barry are so comfortable in the Crucible, if

you look at his record. Quarter-finals last year, semifinals

the year before that and the year before that. And then of course,

2013 he was runner-up. And that has dropped plum on the

red. That was played to perfection

because to get that side of the blue from the angle he had on the red,

that is very good indeed. Every chance now to go on and take this

second frame of the session and put himself just one frame away from a

place in the quarter-final. The white is going the wrong side of the

pocket but the pace and the trace of side... It left it spot on for him.

Just slightly under heat that one. Deciding to play a screw shot here.

Was OK. He played that nicely. Well, to be perfectly honest, there is not

too much that Graeme Dott can do about this. Barry Hawkins is playing

very, very well about now. Graeme's record against Barry is very good,

he has defeated him five times out of seven that they have plane. But

it is a much improved Barry Hawkins since then. It must be said.

Certainly one of the top players in the game, that is for sure. He is

currently ranked number seven in the world.

Just needs this very straightforward red to make sure that this second

frame of this session is his. I think that frame, Graeme had a great

chance to get to just two behind was the big difference because had he

closed from 9- free to 9-7 he would have been in with a great chance

this afternoon. But Barry Hawkins looks very comfortable, very relaxed

and he is cueing beautifully. 233 centuries in his career, Barry has.

He has made 29 centuries this season. We have had 49 centuries so

far in this year's World Championship. Could this be a half

century of centuries? Barry has had just one so far.

I thought he may have played for his black and guaranteed the century but

it should not still be a problem. He just needs to cover and then the

yellow. Ooh, that is not what he wanted. I think he is just about OK.

Oh! Can you believe it?! No century break that he will not be too

disappointed about that. That was a superb break from Barry Hawkins and

now he is just one frame away from a place in the quarter-finals. 12-

six. Every chance that we may not get to

the midsession interval with Barry only needing one more frame. Where

will this red finish? It is usually the case, when you play well and you

make a mistake you get around the ball. When you struggle, if you

miss, you stick one up. An excellent safety shot there from

Barry Hawkins. Has to make sure that the cueball did not cannon into

either the brown or the green because that would have left the

long red into the left hand back pocket, so very well played. Grima

is taking the opportunity to open the reds that he has left this long

red into the right-hand back pocket and Barry Hawkins can get his hand

on the table. Interesting to see the way he plays this. Many players

would be playing this with screw and right-hand side around the back of

the black. That is the way he played it. That was a lovely strike. He is

on the blue. Or is he on the blue? Maybe he cannot see enough. It looks

as though the red may be in the way. A very difficult green or brown. I

think when the ball is open, here, you can see the angle, just not

quite enough of the blue to be seen. What would you do here, Dennis?

Would you keep your opponent under pressure or would you take on that

difficult pot? He has a six frame advantage so if he is feeling good

he will take the pot on but he is having second thoughts about it.

Maybe just keep the white tight on the cushion. Yeah, he cannot make

his mind up. And he will play the white tight on the cushion. Not a

bad choice. Highly unlikely that Graeme could win all the remaining

frames but you never know with this game what could happen so... Don't

put your opponent ride in amongst the ball, make them work for it. Oh,

the white is in. And that means it is a long straight red next to the

blue. I know that Barry Hawkins is 12- six in front and he has the ball

in hand here but there is pressure on this red because if he does miss

it... I think you could roll through and play for the black and that

would take the pressure off but he is digging down so he must get it.

He took the pressure out of the shot, the other way, Dennis, by

screwing back for a ball colour. He is still quite wary of Graeme Dott's

class and fighting capabilities. And Graeme will be thinking, well, maybe

if I can just win three frames now it will plant the seed of doubt into

the mind of Barry and Barry will be very well aware of that as well.

Well, let's see how close he gets to this one. This is more difficult

than the previous one. There you go. He loves that type of shot. He

really does. He is probably one of the best in the game at that type of

shot. He really is. Superb when he is not that far off the cushion.

That was very well judged cannon there from Barry Hawkins. Playing

for the two reds into the same pocket after this black goes in. Did

not think he had the ankle to hold for that rate. This is the cannon.

He played that beautifully. -- did not think he had the angle to hold

for that. Maybe that was not so clinical and precise. He would be a

bit anxious here. When you've missed cue like that you get nervous about

taking a piece out of your tip. Wow. You do not see it very often. He had

a look at the tip but I think he is OK. Come on, Graeme. Let's see a

sizeable break from you here. Great to see Graeme Dott back at the

Crucible. He had to win three qualifier matches and then he

defeated Carter. Carter said that Graeme was just too good for him.

Graeme has lost a bit of time in bed, he hid that far too hard and he

was disgusted with himself. He rolled that wide off the black, he

cannot believe how hard he hit that last shot. Lost a little focus. But

when you were 12-6 down, he probably is a little bit tired. It has been a

long stretch for him here with the qualifying rounds in the match with

Carter. I could not see a straightforward

safety shot so he may have to take this on here.

Yeah, OK. He has covered it but... Once you put it on that near cushion

you very rarely drop in. A terrific chance. OK, there are a

couple of safe reds, there is a good chance to close the match out here.

Well, it may not be trained Dott's year again this year but his name is

on that wonderful trophy and that is something that nobody can ever take

away. Absolutely. Three finals he has contested here.

It will not be easy to get those reds into play. The ones either side

of the pink. He is some 21 points in front. The red, the black, 29. Red

and blue... He will need one of those difficult reds to clinch the

match. Came a little straight. He may still be able to force an angle,

it is just off straight. Thought he may leave himself the angle just to

cannon into the red, closest to the right-hand middle pocket and leave

himself on the yellow full he decided against this now because he

would need to play with a loss of pace. -- lot of pace. It has got a

little bit of angle on the black so we need to paths around with top

spin on the right-hand side to get to the red and the blue. Here comes.

And this is where his trouble starts. He needs to make sure he

gets the correct angle on the blue and even then it will not be easy to

get to the two reds. Or at least one of them, which is all he needs. 39

in front. In fact, the red and the blue, 29 in front, sorry.

He has looked at the green which may be a slightly better angle to cannon

ball on the red side. His back looking at the blue but looking at

the angle he would have to power this in with top spin, virtually,

round the back of the black or just past the black. No. He is just

making sure of his five points and I don't know if he can take a double

long. The pink seems to be slightly in the way. He only needs the red.

He's just having a look to see if he could get the double and... It may

be on. He miss judged that and he did hit the pink. Just taking the

opportunity to bring this red into play, try to get in behind the brown

and the green. He has played this well. A glimmer of a hope for Graeme

Dott. I am just wondering if that was the

last shot that Graeme Dott will play in this year's World Championships.

Yeah, that was eight or if it long pot. -- that was a juristic long

pot. -- terrific. That should be the end for Graeme Dott. There is

another Scotsman waiting for Barry Hawkins. Stephen Maguire. And Barry

will contest the quarter-final. He did all the damage in the middle

part of the match. He went, at one stage, where he had won nine from

ten frames. Does not matter about the green. Graeme comes forward to

congratulate Barry Hawkins and wishes him all the best for the rest

of the tournament. He was just too good at the end and Barry Hawkins...

Well done to Graeme Dott but Barry Hawkins was just too classy and he

runs at a very comfortable winner in the end, 13 -6. I am delighted to

defeat someone of Graeme's calibre and to get through to quarter-finals

I am quite pleased. The big breaks were not flying in. I had a few 90s

there I think that overall I was solid all the way around and I would

not say I am in top form at the minute that I am... I am happy with

where I am playing. Hopefully we will get better as the tournament

goes on. So, Barry with a stellar record here at the Crucible since he

appeared in the final in 2013. This is his second quarter-final visit in

them. He will take on Stephen Maguire, the Scotsman who was making

his first appearance in the quarters fought five years. It is

quarter-final state starting on Tuesday morning and, of course, we

will be live for all. In the meantime, get some sleep.
