Welcome to snooker extra, extended highlights of the 2017 Betfred World

Snooker Championship. Our future tie comes from the second round, Stephen

Maguire taking on Rory McLeod who surprised everyone in the first

round by knocking out Judd Trump. Maguire has a 6-2 lead going into

the second session. Commentary from Willie Thorne and Peter Ebdon.

Rory McLeod didn't get a foothold until he was five behind.

Rory McLeod got back into the Judd Trump 4-0 behind. It will be an

uphill battle here. Yes, Rory is playing one of the very best match

players in the game. Certainly one of the heaviest scorers in Stephen

Maguire. This is a real test of his cueing

here. It is pretty straight. What are

shots! -- what a shot. Nice position on the brown, which are deserved.

The black is available, that is what he'll be playing for. Whatever he

scores from this visit, he deserves after that shot.

He should be 40 or 50 points in front before he has to play anything

difficult. A little surprised he didn't run

further than that. It isn't good. To get the deep screw when he needs, he

has to be careful he doesn't play a push shot here.

Wasn't the black that was the bad shot. The referee has forgotten

about it! I think Leo was more concerned about

the possible push shot. So nice to see him back. Had a bit of a cancer

scare earlier on this year. He has fought that off and it is so nice to

see him back at the Crucible. Yes, lovely man, Leo. Greatly respected

by his fellow professional referees and, indeed, professionals poker

players. Nice little safety from Stephen

Maguire. Rory will be very disappointed not to have scored more

at that opportunity. Because it was a good chance.

Being the wrong side of the black made things difficult for him and

that was end of break. If he is going to claw his way back into the

match, he's going to have to score much heavier than that. To put

Stephen Maguire under any pressure. This red passes towards the yellow

pocket so he won't take the miss, he will take the red on. I was very

impressed with Stephen against Anthony McGill. Anthony McGill only

scored one point in seven frames. That has never been done before at

the Crucible! That's the difference between these

two players. Stephen Maguire, every chance, he tries to win the frame at

one visit. Rory tends to be a little bit more careful. Peter mentioned,

he has to score more heavily. He needs to knuckle down, win the

frame in one visit, just to get some more confidence.

Stephen Maguire will recognise the importance of this visit. With the

6-2 lead, he will try to keep Rory McLeod under as much pressure as

possible. And Stephen scores so heavily in

amongst the balls, normally. You feel that Rory will need to go up a

gear or two to compete in this match. That hasn't worked out

perfectly. Long red into the yellow pocket.

Well played. That could be a frame when, that shot. -- A-frame winner.

Only thing that was missing was the 71 but had locks of bricks above 40

in the opening session. I believe this is going to be a very high one.

He had a bit of a bad contact their but still not a bad read.

38 point lead so needs another two reds, two colours, then he can

concentrate on making the century. Could have done with a fraction

harder, but it isn't a problem. He's one of those people, Stephen

Maguire, he bullies you, doesn't he? You certainly have to be very strong

when you play him. He certainly can be very

intimidating around the table. But like anything else, you can only be

bullied if you let somebody put EU. -- bully you. But he is a great

player, that is for sure and he is in great form.

Already the highest break of the match so far.

Very well played! Stephen Maguire's first century in this tournament. It

is the 45th of the Championship. What would please him more than

anything else, the balls are going right into the middle of the pocket.

Rory McLeod, first chance to be disappointed not to have scored.

Stephen Maguire increases his leave 7-2.

I didn't see that 13 ball plant! When you go for plants, you've got

to get them, that is the key thing. How the flipping heck have I missed

that, he was saying. Do you think this might be an

attempt at some sort of reverse psychology to fry Stephen Maguire's

brain? Not sure that'll work. Pink or black are fine. It isn't an

easy pot. The pink avails an easier position. Stephen knows if this goes

in, he'd expect to win the frame so there is a lot of pressure on this.

He took an awfully long time to play that shot. It didn't do him any

favours. Oh, the old 13 ball plan to reverse psychology. Works every

time! With the next few shots, Rory would

like to get nicely on the red covering the black spot to get the

black back on its spot. Strangely enough, although the red

closest to the left hand black pocket looks an easy pot, it's the

sort of shot that can be missed unless you get onto it properly. The

yellow is in the way to play the little one up the line. Plain ball

is, fine but coming down the right-hand side, it's no good.

He likes to dig down on the ball, he makes it missable this way. He

doesn't really play in areas that give him a choice of shots.

This is the red I was talking about a moment ago. This is missable.

He'd be pretty pleased to be getting back to the table so soon.

You can see him getting the next three reds and three blacks without

any problems. Then the work starts. I think Stephen was playing an

aggressive shot there, trying to bring the two reds into play,

knowing he is bound to be on the pink or black.

He has brought one of them on to play -- into play but I'm sure he'd

like both of them. At first glance, he may not have anything. These two

reds have covered themselves up. He won't be playing this shot with

plenty of confidence. The red in the left centre is far

too difficult. This is a tough shot. He played it well. As you suggested,

very wary of leaving himself a black into the centre. Played it as a

screw shot with a touch of right-hand side and played it very

well. The black going back onto its own

spot will help these two reds. A lifeline for Rory. Coming to the

table three points behind. Stephen Maguire will be expecting to

get another chance in this frame. Because the yellow will be very

difficult into the green pocket. Certainly, even more difficult to

pot the yellow and get onto the green.

There's a possibility that after this next back and red, Rory could

leave himself an angle onto the blue in the centre to possibly can in the

yellow of the baulk cushion. He's not very happy at the way he has hit

that at all. That was a very poor positional shot from Rory, very

disappointed with that. Difficult to get a positional shot. He's very

adept with the screwballs. If this is straight or just off

straight, he could possibly pot this into the green pocket but needs to

be wary of playing the push shot. Great shot, well played! 12 point

lead, needs to get nicely on this yellow.

Make sure you don't get a kiss off the green if you're playing off two

cushions. As we mentioned a few moments ago, it'll be very difficult

to get onto the yellow in such a way that he could pot the yellow and get

on the green. Completely mis-hit it and he will

take second prize. If Rory decides to take this on, he

needs to be really, really accurate. And, even then, he needs to play it

at a sufficient pace that the pocket will accept the ball. He knows how

difficult this is. That's why he's taking the time.

This is exactly the sort of shop that you would miss rather than get

that is why he has decided to play it safe. He has played a good safety

shot. Has a very big target there between

the green and the blue and that was very well worked out from Rory. This

shouldn't be too difficult to hit off one cushion.

Mentally, he will be thinking about the line that he would play if he

was trying to put the cue ball into the left-hand black pocket. Well, I

didn't expect him to play it like that! Rory will take the miss they

are guaranteed which means Stephen Maguire has to hit this, 26 points

in the game with 27 on and he has to make contact with the other this

time. Stephen played it as a deep screw shot to check the cue ball up

off that cushion to square it up. It looks as though he can play this...

Could you bring it up? A touch of run in side -- inside. Here you see

the original position for the ball is now, it is almost identical and

they are both having a little laugh that. -- a little laugh about that.

It is a good hit. Has he left the yellow? He has.

This will make Rory Phelan a lot better. He had every chance in the

opening two frames. -- will make Rory Phelan a lot better. He was in

first in frame number nine when the Maguire actually made 114 but Rory

was in first in the balls, had a good chance in the second frame, but

now he has won the third. No big breaks in the frame but Rory

will be pleased to have won it, he has closed the gap but still trails

by 33. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

Frame 13, Stephen Maguire to break. A good break off therefrom Stephen

Maguire at the start of frame 13. Stephen Maguire can obviously put

this match to bed in this afternoon session if he won the remaining four

frames. He does not want to let Rory when the remaining four frames to

get right back into the match. Played that nicely. You can see the

black does go. He can take the pink. Nice strike. I don't think he is on

the red there, Peter, I think he has overscrewed the pink. Looking at

this next picture we will show you, I think he is on the red, but he is

concerned that he cannot get onto the black in the same pocket,

because he not have the angle. You can see that the red is clearly

available, he might be able to screw off the pink and down onto the black

on the same pocket. Alternatively, he could play the top spin. Touch of

the right-hand side. I agree with Willie, there is more value in the

screw shot. Got onto that really well. Unfortunately, just slightly

the wrong side of the blue. Yes, we were not quite sure if he played off

the pink, the pace he played it, gave himself an option. Three loose

reds to the right-hand side of the table, he can get on all three reds

here, a little bit too hard to get onto them in the corner.

APPLAUSE. He will take that. You saw a wonderful example of

Stephen Maguire's cue power. I think he thought that was in. Just

slightly wide. Just slightly wide. He thought that

was in. Just the pace, really, that kept that out. Now, Rory, you need

to take this chance and you need to score, you need to score heavily.

Does have a few loose reds, but also has a nice angle to play top spin

into the pack to play an aggressive shot. Deciding against that.

It was a tricky pot. Would have liked to have been straight on that

red. Again, he will be bitterly disappointed. The way he finished on

the red, it was almost like a blind pocket shot. He will be

disappointed. He did not play for the red in the middle.

APPLAUSE. Stephen Maguire looks like he has lost a bit of concentration.

Thinking he can possibly get over the line in this afternoon session.

Obviously, if Rory was playing at his best, he could not do that, but

at this moment in time, he is struggling.

APPLAUSE. This is really then. But as a wonderful pot.

-- that is a wonderful pot. Cute that beautifully. With Rory not

taking his chances, and not scoring, he is not putting Stephen Maguire

under any pressure. So Stephen will feel that he is able to push the

boat out a little, so to speak. As in the previous ten to read that he

took into the black pocket. I don't think he would have taken that on if

it had been 6-6. Beautiful shot. Well played.

This is one of the reasons why Stephen Maguire scores so heavily in

amongst the balls when he is playing well, really is very aggressive and

opens the balls at the first available opportunity.

Do you think there was a possibility that Rory put himself under pressure

coming into this match with having such a fine win against Judd Trump?

I would imagine so. He was expecting to play a lot better than this and

he has not not had chances, it is the way he has gone about it when he

has had the chance. He is such a good break-builder, he has made

centuries in tournament play but he seems to have gone into his shell

and is looking for problems rather than playing it loose. He is under a

lot of pressure, it is a massive match for him. He can't stop playing

the right shots. APPLAUSE. Didn't quite have the

angle on the pink to play the start and run through to get from the

black onto the red. He did have the angle, just, well played.

Can't make the century of course, but 90 point break can be achieved,

which you think he would do from here.

Well played, Stephen Maguire, and at the moment there is little

resistance from Rory McLeod, disappointing, from the point of

view of his supporters. Frame 14, Rory McLeod to break. So, Rory

McLeod breaks off in frame 14, desperately needing to find some

fluency. He has had chances. He just hasn't managed to capitalise on

them. Good break off short. -- shot. Once again a very aggressive safety

shot from Stephen Maguire, that has made this next safety shot very

tough, very tough to get back into the ball-carrier.

At first glance, I cannot see an easy path into baulk.

Rory could play the double case back to baulk but I don't think he has

looked at that. That is a double case on the red which is almost in

direct line on the cue ball at the black cushion. And in this

particular instance, I think it would be a good choice for him. At

the cushion he is bound to get a double-kiss, and not half ball

either side, he will get back into baulk. I don't think it is a bad

I don't think he has thought about it, Willy. No, this is a lot more

difficult, he is trying to screw this around. It seems to be the only

shot that he liked Purley, the three-cushion escape. He just about

got away with that. Stephen play that is a shock to

nothing, slightly over cutting the red. Knowing that he would be

getting a good cue ball. And with the reds spread and Stephen

Maguire cueing very well and very freely and scoring heavily... Rory

is coming under more and more pressure. And these safety shots...

Taking this on, deep screw back to baulk.

And he got a pretty good cue ball, but unfortunately, pushed the red

towards the left corner. This is far from easy because it is just off

straight. And it may well be difficult for Stephen after potting

this red to get the cue ball away from the side cushion. He has

already gone round to see if the black goes into the opposite corner

pocket. Wow! Great cueing. Great shot not to

be on a colour, he hit it perfectly, he is 10-3 in front and can perhaps

play this with a bit of freedom. As long as he misses that off with a

screw shot, he will be fine. Not much you can say about that, he

has left himself a difficult red. That is a very good shot, very good

shot, little star and run through to the black, but that is an even

better shot to play. Played to perfection, that one.

Not ideal on this red, by any means, to straight and taking the more

difficult one on along the condition, this is missable. Yes.

That was tough. Slammed the cue on the floor, kick the butt of the cue,

not happy with that at all, if you just touch the near knuckles, they

will not drop. So, Rory, this is a very good chance

now. You need to make a telling contribution.

This is a great chance to win the frame. His only chance in this

match. Can't afford this. He has to score, that is a frame-winning one.

In practice, it would be no problem making 60 from here but when you go

three behind in the World Championship, nothing is

straightforward. For some reason, Rory gets straight

on so many balls. Got to get angles on balls or make sure you're not

hitting them straight. He must finish straight on five or six

blacks already this afternoon. And the problem with finishing

straight issue can either only go forwards or backwards and

invariably, you have to play with a lot of pace and if you play with

pace and side, you can mess. -- miss.

Just roll this and play ball and leave virtually a half ball black to

roll off the cushion and get their two reds off the paying. He has

played the blue and I do not understand why.

Just a slight angle on the blue. Not sure if there is a red that goes in

the right-hand black pocket, which is the left-hand of the two reds you

can see below the pink. That red certainly goes in the red Centre.

He's just coming round to make sure that it does.

He has played the cannon and it has gone wrong.

With a 40 point lead, you'd expect Rory to be playing a good safety

shot back now because if he takes this difficult red on and this is

missable, if he misses it, it could cost him the frame. Oh, well played!

Good shot, very good pot. The red to the left of the two reds

below the pink goes into the right-hand pocket and definitely

goes into the middle. Can Rory play a good positional shot?

If the red next to the pink does pot, and we saw that it did, he will

play to miss the yellow and then come down that side of the table

rather than the side of the table. Perhaps he thinks it doesn't pot.

Could have done with playing a good safety shot. This may well be

pottable. It is very thin. If he cuts in, the cue ball could

move the other two of the cushion. Too thin but he was trying to bring

the two reds into play. Has he finished straight on the pink? If he

has, that's fortunate. It is a player's choice what to do

now. Perfect angle to play it off the

black. What he doesn't want to do is go

between them in the gap. And he has played that very well indeed.

Another nice shot. Slightly trickier than it looked.

He isn't happy about that at all. Quite possibly got heavy contact.

Either way, he isn't happy with the outcome.

Needs to put it out of the back of his mind, though and play a good

safety shot. He decided to play the negative

safety shot. Rory may well tried to play the

cocked hat 33 cushions into the right centre here.

A few moments ago, we'd thought this match would go into the final

session, it looked like Rory McLeod would get to four, which would mean

they'd have to come back tomorrow. This will really hurt Rory McLeod,

losing this frame. He's had plenty of chances, just not been scoring

heavily enough. So, with that clearance, Stephen

Maguire now moves into 11-3 lead against Rory McLeod.

Stephen Maguire two frames away from victory, can he win them both with a

session to spare? That is a shot that Rory has

struggled to play well so far today. That time, he played it very well.

Just slightly thin on the reply from Stephen Maguire.

Rory has a shot to nothing but its deep screw left-hand side. Managed

to afford the blue and it's a good safety shot. Didn't have the angle

to play the pot and under the circumstances that was a very good

safety shot. Stephen has pushed the red towards

the right corner and he hasn't covered it. So, this is a chance for

Rory. Just off straight. He played it well. Because he potted

the red thicken to the pocket, he created an angle. You see the red

goes in the right knuckle. It had a touch of right-hand side on it. It

was the right-hand side that pushed the cue ball... The left-hand side

push the cue ball to the right which is why he hit the red thick,

creating an angle that wasn't there naturally. So it worked out nicely.

I wonder if we're reaching the stage of the match where Rory can loosen

his cueing arm up a touch and play with a little bit more freedom and.

It would be interesting to see if you does that but once again he's

lost the cue ball. Every time he plays with bottom and decide on, he

doesn't have the control. He is nowhere on the colours. Heed of love

to of been on the blue. I'd be happy with that position on

the black. Get straight into them. OK, he has to play it thin with side

but the pack of reds is flat at the back. If you hit the middle of the

three reds directly above the black, he will be on that red.

He gave himself very little chance to be on the red, the way he played

that. Played that very well, digging down

into the cue ball with lots of right-hand side. OK, he has left a

long red which Rory will take on into the left-hand black pocket. He

can play it as a shot to nothing or something, really, because he can

take it on. It was a decent attempt at a safety

shot from Stephen Maguire. That shot required good timing. Oh

dear. He will be very disappointed with that effort. Not enough speed.

It then called the red. Really struggling.

As Maguire has done all day, he didn't finish on the black. --

straight on the black. Played it nicely. OK, second prize,

but there's still one at the bottom of the pack.

He will settle for that. Choice of the thin cut into the corner, which

would really opened the balls up. Taking the long red into the green

pocket, he could screw back for the black or play with top spin for the

blue. Taking the aggressive shot to open up the balls.

That is fortunate for the pink to go over the hole-mac.

You always knew he would at least have a long blue into the corner.

That's been the difference between the two players. Stephen Maguire has

taken the opportunity to develop the reds. To play the attacking shot.

And Rory has been in a very cautious frame of mind, not wanting to open

the balls up, picking the reds off one by one. As you mentioned, it's

very difficult to do that at this level right now.

Ideally, he'd have liked to have been in the middle of the three

reds. This goes right, this is a

frame-winning opportunity. It looks as though after this red

and colour, there is a red that goes into the right-hand black pocket. He

may well have a red into the centre. Three more reds and colours needed

to be sure of the frame. Not ideal on this red.

Good shot. Might need the spider for the next shot, though.

Stephen will be taking a long red into this pocket.

It's the sort of shot that if you miss those, you miss those thick,

especially when playing with side. May have got away with that, though.

That's what happens when your in front and doing well. Rory is

unlucky not to have a pot on a red. He will think the world is against

him at the moment. That is a good safety shot.

As you can see here, just click the green, that's the reason it is being

replaced. This could take a while to get the is exactly right. Stephen

thought he could get past the green and play a plant on these two reds

as a shot to nothing. Stephen will play the one on the

cushion rather than risking the thin clip. You have to get this exactly

right. He's going to play a different shot

anyway, which is fair. Finest of fine shots. 29 points in

front as we see this safety shot played again.

He played with the left-hand side and if you play it again, you've got

to play at plain ball. Stephen Maguire will be playing the

plant as a shot to nothing. And he's got it. Well played.

Very similar to the shot he wanted to play a few shots ago when making

contact with the green. That is a good pot on the brown into

the centre. Trust needs this red now to lead by 12 frames to three. At

this stage, I'm sure there is a part of Rory that just wants to get out

of the auditorium. Absolutely, he'd love to win the last train to go

into the last session but would he want to come back trailing 12-4?

You've got to give you all in every frame. Stranger things have happened

in sport. Just going back to the brown Stephen

Maguire played. The way Rory plays, he would roll up behind the brown to

play snooker. Stephen Maguire, one of the top players in the game, and

the reason for it is because he plays to win the frame at every

visit. Wouldn't be too worried about that,

Stephen Maguire. More than enough to take a 12-3 lead. Just one more

frame needed to win this match. Rory mitres what have go at this

one, shot to nothing, finish on the black. He plays safety first, which

he feels that would have found him a better chance at some stage.

At first glance, he's left very little.

He needed to get a good cue ball and he got a very good cue ball. Very

well played. This is a tough safety shot back and

he needs to be very careful of catching the jaws on the way back.

Excellent shot. Good cue ball. Had to make sure he got past the baulk

line with that safety. If he'd have played it thin, middle pocket jaws

came into place and he couldn't have played it better. Rory is in more

trouble here. Chance of a long manner, Stephen

Maguire into the left-hand pocket. -- red. There is a gap he can play

for as well. It just depends how he sees it, he can either try and hold

for the black into the same pocket or go for the blue, play for the

black into the same pocket knowing that the pink was also in the left

centre. And the left-hand side that he put on the cue ball. That meant

that he threw the red slightly thick onto the right-hand jaw as you see

on mirror. An opportunity for Rory. -- as you see on the screen there.

He is under so much pressure now, he has had a terrible day, he has

played badly, has not taken his chances and he is under so much

pressure now, it is difficult to see a way back for him now.

He expected to pot that one. Rory has had a quick look at the pack of

reds,. They look a bit high. At least he can get back into the baulk

area. He did make it. Once again, not a

favourable kiss. These are one of the things that happen when you're

struggling, on a bad day you end up having to need the rest.

Little unlucky there, great pot. Unfortunately, got into the cue ball

too much this time. Don't know whether he can get through to the

pink. If not, you can see the pink thin then, he can get the cue ball

in baulk. This is a tough pot into the green

pocket. APPLAUSE. It was a good pot. But he

certainly did not go for it full-blooded Lee, played it as a

shock to nothing, he was not confident about getting the pink.

OK, it is six points, but it was an opportunity to score in amongst the

balls. A decent safety sharp but

unfortunately another wasted opportunity. -- safety shot.

APPLAUSE. He is going to have a dip at the one that is nearest the

pocket. He will be kissing it into the other red. Either of the two

reds that are together on the left-hand side, he can pot either of

those two balls. APPLAUSE. He will take on the blue,

I am sure. Just a soft stun here to slide past

the red and it is there, all the way. Excellent shot.

Very nicely controlled from Stephen Maguire. And this is the

opportunity. The opportunity he has been looking for. To clinch the

frame and the match. The balls are open. The reds are covering each

other. He needs to retain good position. But this is an excellent

chance now. To win this match, at this visit.

Has not played that very well. As a matter of fact, I do not think he

can pot a ball. He overs screwed that by eight or

nine inches. I did mention previously that the reds are

covering each other but I still did not expect Stephen to play such a

bad positional shot. Nothing is coming easy for him at

the moment, though. That was a decent pot. Almost

certainly take their pink here because the blue is no good to him.

Excellent pot. OK the black is tied up at the moment, but if he can get

onto the playing, that is two or three shots and the black will open

itself up. Onto the pink. Kiss on the red or black would be

nice now. Decided to play down for one loose red. Sometimes you have to

take the chance of bringing balls into play. Only using the pink,

these reds on the left-hand side it will be tough to get onto the pink

from those reds. Has to play the cannon this time on

the black, gentle, does not have to play it hard, just move the black

away from the red. He will regret it in a couple of shots time.

Now you can see why he brought that black into play. This is the last of

the reds he can get. Here's got to go on to the pink now to move a red.

-- he has got to go. He can't keep pushing the boat out.

And the first chance that he got, he played the cannon. That Willie

suggested Rory could have played a few shots ago.

It is only because all the reds at the left-hand side, it is impossible

to get behind them to get onto the pink. It is not impossible to get on

behind them to get onto the black. He may play this at pace to run

through into the middle of the three reds into play. That is the way he

has played. Very clever shot, that could be a matchwinner. That is the

difference, Stephen Maguire is always looking to win a frame, not

just get a few points and Rory missed a trick again in this frame.

But these super tournament he has had, to beat the favourite it --

with some bookmakers in Judd Trump. He won the next five to go 5-4 and

then held on, a very good win and that would have given him a lot of

confidence. He will be very disappointed, the way he has played

in this match. Once again, he was in first in this frame as well. He has

just not scored. He will need the yellow to win the

frame and match if he just pots the reds and colours. I would imagine he

will try and get into the blue off the last red and try and bring the

yellow interplay. -- in to play. Just wonder whether he might risk

playing the red off the top condition, if he misses the kiss, he

will be on the black are the pink, obviously not this time, he can move

either onto the pink or the blue in a few shots time. He knows this is a

great chance to win frame and match at this visit.

Movie yellow. Just caught the knuckle. Left centre.

Just missed the car man. -- cannon. Just looking to play the snooker

Is he taking on the long blue, leaving himself a double on the

yellow? He moved the yellow that time,

Willie. Rory, this is your chance to take

the match into the final session. Obviously, blue to pink will not be

he would like to play. -- will not be a shot he would like to

ten points behind as we speak, he will need the four remaining

colours. Not straight, surely. APPLAUSE. If Rory decides to play

this at pace, this blue is permissible. -- missable. That is a

great shot, look at the side on Matt, what a shot!

Needless to say, this is really tough cueing, from tight under this

side cushion. Very tough shot, tight under the

side cushion there. Good opportunity to play a safety

shot behind the black here. Just a little too thick. The most important

part of that shot was getting the pink safe, which he has done. Rory

does have the opportunity they want to take the chance of getting the

cue ball behind the black, because he would be getting the pink onto

the side cushion. But in playing the negative safety

shot there, he gave Stephen Maguire at the opportunity to play a snooker

of his own behind the black and he did not play that very well. This is
