Welcome to our Oscars results special. | :00:00. | :00:24.
Leonardo DiCaprio finally wins his first Oscar | :00:25. | :00:26.
Thank you all for this amazing award tonight. | :00:27. | :00:29.
Let us not take this planet for granted. | :00:30. | :00:31.
Investigative journalism drama spotlight surprises the critics | :00:32. | :00:50.
There was also British success for Mark Rylance, Sam Smith | :00:51. | :00:56.
The row about diversity continued to dominate the awards, | :00:57. | :01:10.
with host Chris Rock tackling the issue head on. | :01:11. | :01:13.
And we'll have all the glitz and glamour from the red carpet - | :01:14. | :01:16.
with the low-down on this year's Oscars fashion. | :01:17. | :01:18.
And our entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba will be on the red | :01:19. | :01:21.
This was a night when the best film went to Spotlight. The Spotlight was | :01:22. | :01:36.
also thrown on the diversity row and there were lots of British winners. | :01:37. | :01:39.
We have been speaking to them about their wins and about what this | :01:40. | :01:42.
evening said about diversity, Hollywood and the future. | :01:43. | :01:50.
Film critic Jason Solomons will be helping me go through all the award | :01:51. | :01:58.
And Harpers Bazaar's Jo Glynn Smith is here to go through the night's | :01:59. | :02:06.
Let's have a quick look at who the main winners were. | :02:07. | :02:18.
The best picture award went to Spotlight, a film | :02:19. | :02:22.
about investigative reporters at the Boston Globe who uncovered | :02:23. | :02:25.
child abuse by Catholic priests in Massachusetts. | :02:26. | :02:30.
Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar - at the sixth time of asking | :02:31. | :02:35.
- for his starring role in survival epic The Revenant. | :02:36. | :02:47.
The best actress award went to Brie Larson for playing | :02:48. | :02:49.
Alejandro Inarritu took best director award | :02:50. | :02:58.
He won for The Revenant, following up his success | :02:59. | :03:04.
Jason, let's start with the issue of diversity. We saw the hashtag that | :03:05. | :03:23.
ran for such a long time in the run-up to these Academy Awards this | :03:24. | :03:28.
year. Striking that they didn't ignore the topic this year? Not at | :03:29. | :03:33.
all. It overshadowed the build-up, rightly so. It was not a stellar | :03:34. | :03:38.
year for the films. No film was particularly outstanding. If it | :03:39. | :03:41.
might have been, that could have dominated the conversation. As it | :03:42. | :03:44.
was, diversity did dominate the issue and Chris Rock, the host, | :03:45. | :03:48.
accused Hollywood of being racist. He said, of course you are racist, | :03:49. | :03:53.
in a kind of sorority golf club kind of way. It was brilliant satire from | :03:54. | :03:58.
him. He was the perfect host. In the end, they managed to squeeze a lot | :03:59. | :04:03.
of diversity into the awards. There were winners from the gay community | :04:04. | :04:06.
and Mexican community, with Alejandro Inarritu. I don't know how | :04:07. | :04:12.
Donald Trump will take that. It was a very politicised Oscars, in the | :04:13. | :04:16.
middle of a political campaign in America. In a way, cinema to the | :04:17. | :04:20.
back seat and it was about what films could mean on a wider scale, | :04:21. | :04:26.
what the industry could mean. It was maybe a watershed moment for the | :04:27. | :04:30.
Oscars. The ceremony was one of the most interesting I have seen in many | :04:31. | :04:33.
years. I didn't know until the end what Chris Rock that say or what | :04:34. | :04:39.
film might win. It was an edgy ceremony. Let's hear from Chris | :04:40. | :04:41.
Rock. care about who won | :04:42. | :04:52.
Best Cinematographer. You're | :04:53. | :04:56.
damn right Hollywood's racist. otherwise known as the White | :04:57. | :05:03.
People's Choice Awards. I realised if they nominated | :05:04. | :05:12.
host, I would not Let's go to the Vanity Fair after | :05:13. | :05:14.
party. Our entertainment correspondent | :05:15. | :05:23.
Lizo Mzimba is in the middle of the action, at Vanity Fair's | :05:24. | :05:25.
after-show party. A long night for you, but I am | :05:26. | :05:32.
interested to hear what people have been saying to you at the Vanity | :05:33. | :05:35.
Fair party about this rock and the way he addressed the issue of | :05:36. | :05:41.
diversity? -- Chris Rock. We have had so many of the winners and | :05:42. | :05:44.
nominees in general, celebrities coming through the Vanity Fair party | :05:45. | :05:49.
over the past few hours. As you say, one of the big topics everyone was | :05:50. | :05:54.
talking about was diversity and particularly how Chris Rock handled | :05:55. | :05:57.
it. I spoke to a previous winner and a current winner about what they | :05:58. | :06:00.
thought about it. Whoopi Goldberg, best supporting actress for her role | :06:01. | :06:06.
in Katmai ghost many years ago. And tonight, Mark Rylance, best | :06:07. | :06:09.
supporting actor for the Cold War drama Bridge Of Spies. I spoke to | :06:10. | :06:12.
them both about the diversity issue and how they felt it was dealt with. | :06:13. | :06:19.
I feel like when you hire a Chris Rock, whatever is happening in the | :06:20. | :06:24.
zeitgeist will come through what he says. He was magnificent night. | :06:25. | :06:27.
He pulled no punches and he was not polite. | :06:28. | :06:30.
There is a deep issue to be addressed. Of course in England, we | :06:31. | :06:50.
were the ones who brought so many African slaves over here, so it is | :06:51. | :06:54.
an issue that affects us as well. But hopefully, it is the beginning | :06:55. | :06:58.
of things getting better, people being honest about it. Chris did an | :06:59. | :07:02.
amazing job, to be able to be honest and be funny. | :07:03. | :07:08.
Mark Rylance was one of a number of British winners. We had Jenny Bevan | :07:09. | :07:13.
taking home test costume design for Mad Max: Fury Road. The team behind | :07:14. | :07:17.
the documentary Amy won best documentary, and best song went to | :07:18. | :07:22.
Smith for the Bond theme Writing's On The Wall from the latest Bond | :07:23. | :07:23.
film, Spectre. I spoke to them both. You have been successful | :07:24. | :07:26.
at the Brits and the Grammys before. It's only downhill from here, that's | :07:27. | :07:32.
the truth. We have seen all the major winners | :07:33. | :07:59.
go through, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alicia Vikander, as well as huge | :08:00. | :08:04.
celebrities like Taylor Swift. They are all partying away, enjoying the | :08:05. | :08:07.
evening and celebrating Hollywood and showbiz's biggest night. For the | :08:08. | :08:12.
time being, I am going to wrap up here after an incredible 24 hours of | :08:13. | :08:15.
awards and parties to celebrate the Oscars. Let's talk about the films | :08:16. | :08:25.
and winners. Jason, Leonardo DiCaprio. Did he win because he was | :08:26. | :08:30.
the right person to pick the award up, or was there a bit of the | :08:31. | :08:35.
economy going, it is 22 years since we first nominated him, it's about | :08:36. | :08:40.
his turn? Five previous nominations. What's eating Gilbert grape was the | :08:41. | :08:44.
first one, a great movie. Leonardo DiCaprio has become an enormous | :08:45. | :08:48.
star. Tonight, he proved his worth as the leading actor. His speech was | :08:49. | :08:52.
excellent. He was calm and collected. He is a massive movie | :08:53. | :08:55.
star. He carried The Revenant over the line. It is not my favourite | :08:56. | :09:03.
performance of his or my favourite movie, but he is a big star and he | :09:04. | :09:07.
made it a big hit at the box office both here and in America. He carries | :09:08. | :09:09.
this movie likely carries the bearskin rug on his back all the way | :09:10. | :09:12.
through. He would have been a great silent movie star. He is old school | :09:13. | :09:18.
Hollywood. So I do think it is right. Maybe Michael Fassbender's | :09:19. | :09:23.
performance as Steve jobs was more studied. But Leo was a movie star | :09:24. | :09:27.
throughout this epic movie of The Revenant, and that is what he got | :09:28. | :09:31.
rewarded for, finally. It would have been remiss if he had never won an | :09:32. | :09:36.
Oscar. They rewarded his former muse, Scorsese, eventually. Leonardo | :09:37. | :09:40.
deserves it. Let's hear from the ceremony. | :09:41. | :09:42.
Thank you all for this amazing award tonight. | :09:43. | :09:44.
Let us not take this planet for granted. | :09:45. | :09:46.
So striking. That is one of the things that can be fun about Oscars | :09:47. | :10:01.
night. He took the award. The director took best director. But not | :10:02. | :10:06.
best film. And the film you and I enjoyed so much, Spotlight, got best | :10:07. | :10:11.
film. That's right. At the Baftas, Inarritu and DiCaprio got best | :10:12. | :10:14.
picture for The Revenant. At the Oscars, Spotlight surprised | :10:15. | :10:19.
everyone, read out by Morgan Freeman to gasps in the room. He looked | :10:20. | :10:25.
surprised! He did. The last time that happened was when Crash won and | :10:26. | :10:32.
Jack Nicholson read it out on the room was shocked. And Brokeback | :10:33. | :10:36.
Mountain. I liked Spotlight. It was my favourite will be. It is a solid | :10:37. | :10:40.
film with liberal credentials in a year when Hollywood wants to show | :10:41. | :10:45.
off its liberal credentials when it is under attack for not being | :10:46. | :10:48.
diverse enough. This is about journalists and building your case | :10:49. | :10:53.
painstakingly, and it is about passion for getting the story right. | :10:54. | :10:57.
So as a journalist, I am right behind it. It really is a | :10:58. | :11:00.
journalist's film rightly or wrongly. | :11:01. | :11:15.
We hope this resonates all the way to the Vatican. | :11:16. | :11:20.
It is a film about investigating child abuse in the Catholic Church | :11:21. | :11:24.
in Boston, and it is about the systemic abuse in the church that | :11:25. | :11:27.
goes all the way up to the Vatican. So it is about journalists, but it | :11:28. | :11:31.
is also about victims and abuse in the church. That was a theme of the | :11:32. | :11:37.
evening, all of these issues. It was a very issue lead Oscars. Leonardo | :11:38. | :11:40.
DiCaprio talked about climate change. We talked about Chris Rock, | :11:41. | :11:45.
and abuse was the winning film. That was what the academy wanted this | :11:46. | :11:46.
year. It is time! They knew, and they let | :11:47. | :12:11.
it happen! Two kids, OK? It could have been you, me or any of us. We | :12:12. | :12:17.
got to nail these scumbags, we got to show people that nobody can get | :12:18. | :12:20.
away with this, not a priest or a cardinal or a freaking Pope! My | :12:21. | :12:26.
Gruffalo, in a performance I really liked. -- Mark Roth followed. It did | :12:27. | :12:34.
not win, but he gives it his all. Everyone in Spotlight gives their | :12:35. | :12:39.
all. Good ensemble casting." Best actress. Brie Larson. Until however | :12:40. | :12:45.
many months ago, how many people had heard of her? They probably thought | :12:46. | :12:50.
she was a cheese in a Swedish daily. Brie Larson is 25 years old and it | :12:51. | :12:55.
is an extraordinary victory for an extraordinary performance in Room, | :12:56. | :12:58.
my favourite of all the films that were nominated. It is a film with | :12:59. | :13:05.
emotion and is not in the heart moments. She plays a mother who is | :13:06. | :13:08.
raising her child in captivity and protecting him from the terrible | :13:09. | :13:14.
emperor ons they are in and then has to reject him from the world itself. | :13:15. | :13:19.
It is a brilliant movie, based on Donohoe's book. And Brie Larson | :13:20. | :13:22.
gives everything this protective mother, trying to sculpt the world | :13:23. | :13:28.
to protect her child. It is a lioness of a performance, very | :13:29. | :13:31.
animalistic. We had never seen this actress before, and that probably | :13:32. | :13:37.
helps. If she were famous, you would be reading some iconography into it. | :13:38. | :13:41.
But she is a blank canvas and brilliantly adaptable. You may have | :13:42. | :13:45.
seen her in Train wreck am playing Amy Schumer's sister. She is | :13:46. | :13:51.
unrecognisable here. We have a star actress on our hands. It is a hard | :13:52. | :13:53.
watch as a woman. Let's here. When I was 17, I was walking home. | :13:54. | :14:07.
Where was I? You were still in heaven. What die? We call him old | :14:08. | :14:12.
neck, I don't know his real name. What is the dog's name? There wasn't | :14:13. | :14:17.
a dog! He was trying to trick me, OK? There wasn't a dog. He still me. | :14:18. | :14:24.
I want a different story! No, this is the story you get! | :14:25. | :14:30.
Just watching that clip reminds me how difficult it is. But it is an | :14:31. | :14:36.
extraordinary film. And it is worth mentioning that little boy. They | :14:37. | :14:39.
brought him on stage. He presented an award. He is nine now. He is | :14:40. | :14:46.
terrific in the movie. He should have been nominated as well. The | :14:47. | :14:50.
children have not been diverse enough in Hollywood. He made a | :14:51. | :14:53.
lovely joke to Chris Rock about how he loved him as the zebra in | :14:54. | :14:57.
Madagascar. It is a Drummond is performance by him and the two of | :14:58. | :15:00.
them spark off each other brilliantly. Riehl cars and referred | :15:01. | :15:05.
to him as her partner, and her performance would be nothing without | :15:06. | :15:08.
his performance -- Brie Larson referred to him as her partner. It | :15:09. | :15:12.
is staggering to see what a young child can achieve. One of my | :15:13. | :15:15.
favourite performances was Alicia Vikander. I was delighted to see | :15:16. | :15:19.
that she won for her performance in The Danish Girl. | :15:20. | :15:31.
I think she won the supporting so they could get her in there. Many | :15:32. | :15:39.
people may not have heard of her. She was in many other films this | :15:40. | :15:43.
year. This was the one where she played the partner who is to undergo | :15:44. | :15:49.
the patience of a saint as she supports partner, played by Eddie | :15:50. | :15:54.
Redmayne, as he goes through a sex transition operation. It is a strong | :15:55. | :15:58.
performance, the best thing in the film. You wonder, everyone thinks it | :15:59. | :16:06.
refers to Eddie Redmayne, but it could refer to her, though she is | :16:07. | :16:16.
Swedish. She is a very versatile, very beautiful actress. The BAFTAs | :16:17. | :16:21.
tried to tell everyone she is going on with Michael Fassbender and the | :16:22. | :16:26.
Oscars confirmed it because he give her a big kiss when she want. | :16:27. | :16:32.
Sometimes Hollywood needs to anoint a new start and they do it at the | :16:33. | :16:37.
Oscars. Out of nowhere comes someone like this. It is a new generation | :16:38. | :16:41.
being passed on. It is an eye on the future and those to signal that. | :16:42. | :16:48.
Let's be slightly indulgent for if you moment, if we can make. We will | :16:49. | :16:53.
talk about some British successes. Mark Rylance, extraordinary. There | :16:54. | :17:00.
he is on stage, with his Oscar for Pritchard spies, the Steven | :17:01. | :17:04.
Spielberg film, yet so many of us have been watching him on stage for | :17:05. | :17:10.
years. Now everyone knows who he is. He was a success in Wolf Hall, which | :17:11. | :17:18.
is a BBC drama. He was in Jerusalem on Broadway as well. He is | :17:19. | :17:23.
tremendous in Bridge of Spies. It is a real supporting role, he is not | :17:24. | :17:27.
the lead, Tom Hanks is the lead, but he brings a colour-coded and is | :17:28. | :17:32.
superb as this Russian spy, accused of being a Russian spy and we ever | :17:33. | :17:37.
know. He is an enigma. He brings a delightful mystery. | :17:38. | :17:39.
Apparently you are not an American citizen. | :17:40. | :17:46.
And according to your boss, you are not | :17:47. | :17:50.
That has become his catchphrase. He re-energised the globe Theatre in | :17:51. | :18:26.
London. He is taking theatre to another level. I was talking about | :18:27. | :18:33.
Brits. Sam Smith got best song in the James Bond film. Everybody | :18:34. | :18:39.
thought Lady Gaga was a shoe in for that. Nobody liked the Sun Smith | :18:40. | :18:44.
song, but I loved it. It works brilliantly. Not just as a single | :18:45. | :18:47.
but in the opening credits of the film. It worked well to the spectral | :18:48. | :18:53.
images. I thought he did a brilliant performance of it. If he hadn't | :18:54. | :18:57.
sealed the win, he was terrific on stage. Lady Gaga, there was a lot of | :18:58. | :19:10.
emotion. It takes us back to some serious strands running through the | :19:11. | :19:15.
show. She got a standing ovation. It was a big choreographed performance | :19:16. | :19:21.
in a song about sexual abuse. She was introduced by Jill Biden, who | :19:22. | :19:28.
also got a standing ovation. He said, my friend Lady Gaga, everyone | :19:29. | :19:32.
stood up then. That is the right response to that song. It was an | :19:33. | :19:37.
unusual Oscars. Everybody was happy to show their liberal credentials | :19:38. | :19:43.
and they were pricked by Chris Rock at the beginning. He said he might | :19:44. | :19:47.
be liberal but you have a long way to go. It was a best foot forward, | :19:48. | :19:52.
but I am delighted for Sam Smith. He said he is the first openly gay man | :19:53. | :19:58.
to win an Oscar and dedicated his award to the LGBT to community. | :19:59. | :20:06.
Let's talk about one of our favourites of the year. Best | :20:07. | :20:10.
documentary. It won if you weeks ago at the BAFTAs. Amy, picking up the | :20:11. | :20:18.
Oscars. I think it is a tremendous film. It takes a documentary to a | :20:19. | :20:24.
new level. He was famously overlooked by the Academy, but this | :20:25. | :20:31.
is what happens with politics. Leonardo DiCaprio won after a while. | :20:32. | :20:36.
It has taken documentary to a new cinematic level. It tells the story | :20:37. | :20:47.
of Amy, the girl next door, who grew up is a lively and became tragically | :20:48. | :20:52.
unfulfilled by stardom, buy drugs, it is a tragic story. It is | :20:53. | :20:58.
brilliantly told. It is a win for Britain. Another win for Britain, | :20:59. | :21:05.
costumes for mad Max, a repeat of the BAFTAs. Without the bad jokes by | :21:06. | :21:12.
Stephen Fry. She is an extraordinary costume designer because anyone who | :21:13. | :21:17.
says would think she does not look like a costume designer, but she | :21:18. | :21:20.
won't work for these post-apocalyptic looks she give it. | :21:21. | :21:26.
You can look at the scenery in mad Max, it is desert. The costumes | :21:27. | :21:32.
became important in diluting the differences between characters. I | :21:33. | :21:41.
see why she has taken it because people were impressed at how the | :21:42. | :21:46.
costumes became part of the landscape and part of the | :21:47. | :21:53.
characters. It is what you can whittle away from the | :21:54. | :21:58.
post-apocalyptic doom that the film inhabits. It kind of six Craft | :21:59. | :22:08.
awards. -- carried off. I hope there was no post-apocalyptic fashion on | :22:09. | :22:11.
the carpet. What was your overall take on the night because we have | :22:12. | :22:16.
themes, we have of the shoulder, on the shoulder. What struck you today? | :22:17. | :22:24.
It is the ultimate red carpet. It was a plunging neckline evening. | :22:25. | :22:27.
There were lots of dresses that went right down to the West were quite | :22:28. | :22:31.
far down. There was a theme in that sense. Column dresses, rather than | :22:32. | :22:39.
the big dresses and a variety of colours. I thought it was very | :22:40. | :22:46.
feminine, some beautiful looks here. I love the dress Sasha Ronin war. A | :22:47. | :22:54.
beautiful dress by Calvin Klein. She wore a different coloured earrings | :22:55. | :22:59.
which got quite a lack of this. Cate Blanchett, for me, I always think | :23:00. | :23:04.
she does the red carpet beautifully. This will divide people because it | :23:05. | :23:09.
is quite a dress. There is a lot going on. You have crystals. Here we | :23:10. | :23:15.
have a beautiful dress from Jennifer Lawrence, stunning, stunning look. | :23:16. | :23:17.
Really simple but she looks incredible. That's bigger than your | :23:18. | :23:24.
favourites. You were with us at the BAFTAs and then we were in agreement | :23:25. | :23:28.
that Cate Blanchett stole the show. Let's start with the still image of | :23:29. | :23:35.
her in LA. Very, very detailed dress. There is Cate Blanchett. That | :23:36. | :23:44.
is the still from earlier in the night. It fits beautifully. A lot of | :23:45. | :23:53.
detail here. There are feathers, crystals, flowers, but it is | :23:54. | :23:58.
beautifully cut. A low neckline again, it really fresh, spring like | :23:59. | :24:02.
colour. I love it. It will divide people because it is a lot of dress. | :24:03. | :24:08.
She wears it beautifully, as ever. I thought it was a great stress for | :24:09. | :24:14.
the red carpet. It looks lovely. When you see the detail. From | :24:15. | :24:19.
further back it looks fuzzy. I think so. She does love the detail in the | :24:20. | :24:25.
garments and with creature, that is where the beauty comes in Tibet. It | :24:26. | :24:29.
is Craft and art and she wears it beautifully. You mentioned Sasha | :24:30. | :24:36.
Ronin who I thought was fantastic in Brooklyn. She held that film. I know | :24:37. | :24:41.
you thought she stood out on the red carpet. It is a beautiful dress. The | :24:42. | :24:46.
emerald green colour compliment her skin tone. A slightly north | :24:47. | :24:51.
neckline, she is slightly younger. She hasn't put too much jewellery on | :24:52. | :24:56.
with the dress. You really see the actress and that is important with | :24:57. | :25:01.
these addresses. They are not wearing the actress, the actress is | :25:02. | :25:04.
wearing the dress and the colour is stunning. She looks great, really | :25:05. | :25:09.
crude with the loose hair and the simple make-up. I wonder if we can | :25:10. | :25:17.
see a photo of Julie and more. We were commenting on how crystal she | :25:18. | :25:22.
looks. She was wearing Chanel. -- Julianne mirror. I thought this was | :25:23. | :25:30.
a great dress. Fanning out at the bottom. You can see the script is a | :25:31. | :25:36.
kind of lace, it is hard to tell in black, but the attention to detail. | :25:37. | :25:45.
It was stunning. She looks elegant. One quick thought. Police yet, I | :25:46. | :25:52.
love her as an actress, is but one that divide critics. -- Luciana. She | :25:53. | :26:01.
is a young actress and is beautiful and the colour is fresh and sweet. | :26:02. | :26:06.
It will divide people, I am sure. Thank you very much indeed. There is | :26:07. | :26:11.
much more on the BBC News website about all of that, the fashion, the | :26:12. | :26:16.
films, the winners and losers. Big thanks as ever to you both. See you | :26:17. | :26:21.
again same time next year. Goodbye. | :26:22. | :26:33. |
