Over 800 years ago, this famous city was the site

0:00:020:00:04

of a very rare event - the marriage of an English king abroad.

0:00:040:00:09

Find out what happened, and which country I'm in, in just a moment.

0:00:090:00:13

Today's house hunters want to turn their regular holiday destination

0:00:320:00:36

into their permanent home, and it is all about having a room with a view.

0:00:360:00:41

It is a very light room and the views out there, well, what can I say?

0:00:410:00:46

It's absolutely amazing!

0:00:460:00:49

And they're more than ready to get settled in.

0:00:490:00:51

-Superb. You know, it feels like home.

-Does it?

-Yep.

0:00:510:00:55

I could live here, easily.

0:00:550:00:57

Welcome to Escape To The Continent.

0:00:590:01:01

Today, I am in the city of Limassol, the largest port

0:01:010:01:05

in southern Cyprus and capital of the Limassol region.

0:01:050:01:08

Now, in 1191, a ship carrying Richard the Lionheart's fiancee

0:01:080:01:13

crashed ashore during a violent storm just off this coastline.

0:01:130:01:17

The local ruler threatened to take her hostage, and soon felt the wrath

0:01:170:01:22

of King Richard when he attacked Cyprus to rescue his bride-to-be.

0:01:220:01:26

After conquering the island in battle, they were married here.

0:01:260:01:30

And at the same time, he declared himself King of Cyprus.

0:01:300:01:35

Now, over the centuries, this island has endured many such invasions.

0:01:350:01:39

But the Cypriot spirit, with its unique culture, has survived

0:01:390:01:43

and is still as strong as ever today.

0:01:430:01:46

The island of Cyprus lies in the Eastern Mediterranean,

0:01:460:01:50

tucked in between Turkey and Syria.

0:01:500:01:52

On the island's southern coast, is the Limassol District,

0:01:520:01:55

which sits on Akrotiri Bay.

0:01:550:01:58

Limassol, also known as Lemesos, is the capital of the district

0:01:590:02:03

and the second largest city in Cyprus.

0:02:030:02:06

Visitors flock to its palm-fringed promenade,

0:02:060:02:09

which stretches for two miles along the city's municipal beach.

0:02:090:02:14

It's also home to the largest port in Cyprus,

0:02:140:02:17

which handles over 3.5 million tonnes of cargo each year.

0:02:170:02:22

The backdrop to the city is the Troodos mountain range,

0:02:220:02:25

where the Cypriot sweet wine industry is based.

0:02:250:02:28

The hills are dotted with rustic villages

0:02:280:02:31

and there is a rich spiritual history here.

0:02:310:02:34

The ancient chapel of the convent of Panagia Amasgou, in Monagri,

0:02:340:02:39

houses original, un-restored frescoes,

0:02:390:02:41

which date from the 12th to the 16th century.

0:02:410:02:45

Along the coast are the ruins of one of the most ancient royal

0:02:450:02:48

cities in Cyprus - Amathus.

0:02:480:02:51

Thought to have been abandoned in the seventh century,

0:02:510:02:53

the 3,000-year-old remains include the Temple of Aphrodite,

0:02:530:02:57

the Greek goddess of love.

0:02:570:03:00

With a wealth of cultural and historic landmarks,

0:03:000:03:03

as well as a coastline that enjoys ten months of sunshine a year,

0:03:030:03:07

it is easy to see why Limassol is an appealing destination to escape to.

0:03:070:03:12

So, how do property prices compare in this part of Cyprus?

0:03:140:03:18

Well, the average price of a three-bedroom, detached property

0:03:180:03:22

around the Limassol area costs just over £200,000.

0:03:220:03:26

Now, that is £50,000 cheaper than the average back home.

0:03:260:03:31

And you'll find houses here offer a lot more space

0:03:310:03:34

and many include a swimming pool, so you can enjoy

0:03:340:03:37

the 300 days of sunshine that Cyprus gets every year.

0:03:370:03:42

But there is more to upping sticks

0:03:420:03:44

and moving to a foreign country than just the price.

0:03:440:03:47

So let's meet today's buyers and find out why

0:03:470:03:49

they want to relocate to this particular part of the continent.

0:03:490:03:53

Cornish-based retirees David

0:03:550:03:57

and Yola have been married for 16 happy years,

0:03:570:04:00

and it was their jobs that they credit with bringing them together.

0:04:000:04:04

David and I first met through our careers in banking.

0:04:040:04:08

David was my boss.

0:04:080:04:10

After that particular job had finished,

0:04:100:04:13

we continued to keep in touch,

0:04:130:04:14

and then eventually decided we'd get married,

0:04:140:04:18

which we then did in Marousi.

0:04:180:04:21

And it is their love of hot climates that is driving this move.

0:04:210:04:25

No longer tied to work, they are desperate to make

0:04:250:04:27

the sunny Mediterranean island of Cyprus their new home.

0:04:270:04:30

And it is a place that is well known to them.

0:04:300:04:33

Yola has been visiting Cyprus for about 30 years,

0:04:330:04:37

so we have been going out almost every year once or twice since

0:04:370:04:41

we have been married, and it seems almost an ideal place to move to.

0:04:410:04:46

I fell in love with Cyprus when I first visited

0:04:460:04:51

and walked down the steps of the aircraft.

0:04:510:04:54

I felt as if I had arrived home.

0:04:540:04:56

Mainly, we are looking for a completely fresh start,

0:04:560:04:59

start a new episode in our lives.

0:04:590:05:01

Embracing a new way of life, getting involved in a new culture

0:05:010:05:06

and learning a new language.

0:05:060:05:09

I can say, "Pos se lene?"

0:05:090:05:13

What does that mean?

0:05:130:05:14

It may still all be Greek to David, but Yola has been making steps

0:05:160:05:21

towards integrating, and not just with the language.

0:05:210:05:24

When I come home, I do try out what I've eaten in Cyprus.

0:05:240:05:28

I love cooking local dishes -

0:05:280:05:30

stifatho, moussaka.

0:05:300:05:33

I've tried kleftiko.

0:05:330:05:35

My interests largely surround the garden.

0:05:350:05:37

I love putting around the garden.

0:05:370:05:38

I think getting out to Cyprus, it's going to be

0:05:380:05:41

a completely new climate, try something completely different.

0:05:410:05:44

Also I have got a latent interest in astronomy.

0:05:440:05:47

Cyprus is a much clearer atmosphere and it's wonderful to be able

0:05:470:05:52

to get out and actually look through and see the planets.

0:05:520:05:55

It's not only stargazing that makes them starry eyed.

0:05:550:05:59

David and Yola are keen animal lovers,

0:05:590:06:02

and one of the key considerations in this move is making sure

0:06:020:06:05

their brood of four-legged friends are sufficiently catered for.

0:06:050:06:09

We have four pets at present. We have a rescue cat, Katya.

0:06:090:06:13

We rescued a springer spaniel - Storm.

0:06:130:06:16

A three-year-old Jack Russell - Dotty.

0:06:160:06:20

And we have just bought a little border terrier, Archie,

0:06:200:06:24

who is just coming up to five months old.

0:06:240:06:26

It'll be difficult for the dogs in the heat in July and August.

0:06:260:06:30

They would adopt a totally different lifestyle as well.

0:06:300:06:34

As part of the move, they are selling their existing home -

0:06:360:06:39

a large Cornish farmhouse that David bought a year before he tied

0:06:390:06:42

the knot with Yola.

0:06:420:06:44

This will be the first property we'll have bought together.

0:06:440:06:47

Yep, it will be indeed. So it could throw up some interesting things.

0:06:470:06:52

Though there is one thing they are already agreed on,

0:06:520:06:55

and that is how much they're going to spend.

0:06:550:06:57

The budget for this move is going to be £450,000, absolute max.

0:06:570:07:02

Our buyers have decided to concentrate their property

0:07:050:07:08

search in the west of the Limassol District,

0:07:080:07:11

as it is a place they have often visited.

0:07:110:07:13

Now that they have jetted in, I'm meeting them to find

0:07:130:07:16

out how we can make their dream move to this warmer climate a reality.

0:07:160:07:20

David and Yola, I was going to say,

0:07:200:07:23

"Welcome to Cyprus," to the two of you, but in actual fact,

0:07:230:07:26

you two know this island far better than any of us, don't you?

0:07:260:07:29

How many times have you been here?

0:07:290:07:31

About 35 times.

0:07:310:07:32

-You obviously love it, Yola.

-Absolutely.

0:07:320:07:34

David, how many times have you been to the island?

0:07:340:07:37

-Probably about 15, 16 times over the years.

-My goodness!

0:07:370:07:40

You have been here so many times,

0:07:400:07:42

why do you need our help to find a property?

0:07:420:07:44

We've tried over the years to find something we like,

0:07:440:07:49

but we've never quite got the right location.

0:07:490:07:51

We're hoping a fresh pair of eyes will point us

0:07:510:07:53

-in the right direction.

-Cos you currently live in Cornwall, which is

0:07:530:07:56

a beautiful parts of the world. Cyprus is very different, isn't it?

0:07:560:07:59

Yes, it is very different - far more sunshine

0:07:590:08:03

and it will be a different culture, a total new way of life.

0:08:030:08:07

And it would be lovely to be able to speak the language as well.

0:08:070:08:10

-Oh, you're going to try a little bit of Greek, are you?

-Absolutely.

0:08:100:08:13

-Do you speak any of the moments?

-Very, very little,

0:08:130:08:15

but I do understand some.

0:08:150:08:16

So, do you think it is important that you make the effort?

0:08:160:08:19

Absolutely. We are looking to...

0:08:190:08:21

..integrate with the Cypriot community.

0:08:230:08:25

Well, just remind us of the type of property that you are after.

0:08:250:08:28

Well, we want a property with a minimum of two, possibly three

0:08:280:08:31

bedrooms, a lot of storage space,

0:08:310:08:35

room for the dogs, kitchen-diner.

0:08:350:08:38

Definitely an en suite and the utility would be lovely.

0:08:380:08:42

But the space around the property, due to the animals,

0:08:420:08:45

is very important.

0:08:450:08:46

And your dogs you have at home at the moment,

0:08:460:08:48

-so you'll want to bring them out.

-Yep.

-And the cat as well.

0:08:480:08:51

So, let's talk money then.

0:08:510:08:53

Remind us of your budget for this move to Cyprus.

0:08:530:08:56

It is 450,000 max for the right property.

0:08:560:08:59

-Is that with everything done?

-Absolutely, yes, everything done.

0:08:590:09:02

-Well, we've got some splendid properties lined up.

-Excellent.

0:09:020:09:05

-Shall we start with the first one? Are you ready to go?

-I can't wait.

0:09:050:09:08

For David and Yola's maximum budget of £450,000,

0:09:100:09:14

they're after property with a minimum of three bedrooms,

0:09:140:09:18

a kitchen-diner

0:09:180:09:19

ample storage and plenty of outside space for the dogs.

0:09:190:09:24

Good views are key, and they would like this

0:09:240:09:26

all located in or near a mainly Cypriot-speaking village.

0:09:260:09:30

Cyprus' housing market is still weak,

0:09:300:09:33

so our buyers are in a strong position.

0:09:330:09:36

We have located four great properties for them into view,

0:09:360:09:39

the last of which is a mystery house which we have high hopes for.

0:09:390:09:43

But will it cause canine concerns?

0:09:430:09:46

During their stay we will be putting them up in a rented home from home

0:09:460:09:49

to offer a taste of what a permanent move might feel like.

0:09:490:09:53

Now, they have visited the island more than 50 times between them,

0:09:530:09:57

so the challenge is on to find the right house that turns

0:09:570:10:00

the annual jaunt into their year-round home.

0:10:000:10:02

Our first port of call is the village of Pissouri,

0:10:070:10:10

which is located 40 kilometres to the west of Limassol.

0:10:100:10:13

This stretch of coastline is filled with remains of Greco-Roman

0:10:130:10:17

civilizations, such as the magnificent seafront amphitheatre.

0:10:170:10:22

This is a remnant of the ancient city of Kourion,

0:10:220:10:25

built in the 2nd century BC.

0:10:250:10:28

It's fantastic acoustics mean it is still in use today.

0:10:280:10:32

Pissouri offers its own bay and wide sandy beach,

0:10:320:10:35

but the village itself is five kilometres inland.

0:10:350:10:39

The heart of this community is the village square.

0:10:390:10:42

Most of the resident population are Cypriot

0:10:420:10:44

and there are a number of traditional tavernas here,

0:10:440:10:47

where locals play cards and tavli,

0:10:470:10:49

a Cypriot and Greek version of backgammon.

0:10:490:10:52

And we're kicking off the house hunt on the outskirts of the village,

0:10:520:10:56

where we find our first property.

0:10:560:10:58

So, here we have our very first property in Cyprus.

0:11:000:11:04

-It has a very attractive exterior.

-Well, that's a good start.

0:11:040:11:08

-I like that. David?

-It looks a solid house,

0:11:080:11:10

and I like the little garden at the front there.

0:11:100:11:13

Yeah. I've already noticed, there is a lot of parking here. It's gated.

0:11:130:11:18

-And I'm thinking of animals, dogs.

-So they are secure.

-Yeah.

0:11:180:11:22

Now, you said location is so important,

0:11:220:11:26

do you know this area well?

0:11:260:11:27

-Very well.

-I thought so. And do you like this area?

-Very much.

0:11:270:11:31

Shall we go on with the tour? That's a pretty good start.

0:11:310:11:34

This six-year-old villa is in a great location that really

0:11:340:11:38

appeals to David and Yola.

0:11:380:11:40

I just hope the inside will make as much of an impression.

0:11:400:11:43

So, I brought you in the side entrance

0:11:430:11:44

because that is the one the owners always use.

0:11:440:11:47

And lead us straight into this dining-kitchen area.

0:11:470:11:50

It's all quite modern.

0:11:500:11:52

It's nice and light.

0:11:520:11:54

-I like the open plan, but it looks a bit small to me.

-Does it?

-Yeah.

0:11:540:11:58

We've got a large kitchen at home, probably the whole of this area.

0:11:580:12:03

-So you are used to space, aren't you?

-Yes.

0:12:030:12:05

What you don't have at home is...that view.

0:12:050:12:10

-I know, it's absolutely breathtaking.

-Yeah.

0:12:100:12:12

OK, well, we've got more to show you.

0:12:120:12:15

So, here's your sitting room.

0:12:170:12:19

I know next door we slightly struggled with the lack of space.

0:12:190:12:24

This side is actually probably of little bit smaller.

0:12:240:12:26

It is too small, but it is a very light room

0:12:260:12:30

and the views out there, well, what can I say?

0:12:300:12:33

It's absolutely amazing.

0:12:330:12:35

Also, you have got the patio doors,

0:12:350:12:37

again because we know how warm Cyprus gets

0:12:370:12:40

during the summer months.

0:12:400:12:41

During the winter, a little bit cooler -

0:12:410:12:44

you've got an electric fire there.

0:12:440:12:46

How do you feel?

0:12:460:12:48

-Disappointingly small but beautifully presented.

-Yes.

-It is.

0:12:480:12:52

-And fantastic location.

-Yeah. We're getting close.

0:12:520:12:56

All right, let's continue cos I've still got more to show you.

0:12:560:12:59

The ground floor dimensions may be smaller than

0:12:590:13:02

they were expecting, but this house extends vertically,

0:13:020:13:05

with four bedrooms set out over three levels.

0:13:050:13:08

In the basement, there is a double bedroom

0:13:080:13:10

and an en suite shower room,

0:13:100:13:12

but we are making our way up to the first floor,

0:13:120:13:14

where a family bathroom and three double bedrooms are situated,

0:13:140:13:18

two of which have balconies with sea views.

0:13:180:13:21

And it is one of these we are proposing for them.

0:13:210:13:24

This is the master. It has got an en suite just beside it.

0:13:240:13:29

-OK, and I think it is a bit on the small side.

-Yeah.

0:13:290:13:32

That seems to be the theme right through.

0:13:320:13:34

The rooms are a bit too small, but immaculately done.

0:13:340:13:37

You like the house, don't you?

0:13:370:13:39

Yeah, I do, but it's much, much, much smaller than what we have at home.

0:13:390:13:44

The internal footprints of 186 square metres might be less

0:13:470:13:51

than our buyers are used to, but as the land is so important to them for

0:13:510:13:54

their dogs and cats, I'm interested to see how the garden sizes up.

0:13:540:13:59

As you can see, there is quite a lot of garden here, isn't there?

0:13:590:14:02

Yes, it's lovely. Lovely pool area

0:14:020:14:05

and the garden is Japanese the way it has been set out.

0:14:050:14:08

It's very, very nice, very neat.

0:14:080:14:10

My concern is the piece of land behind.

0:14:100:14:13

Well spotted, actually, because this isn't part of the property,

0:14:130:14:17

but with permission from the Mayor, you could actually turf that

0:14:170:14:21

over if you wanted to make it a run for the dogs.

0:14:210:14:23

But you wouldn't own it.

0:14:230:14:25

But it seems that they don't mind you actually using that

0:14:250:14:28

-little bit of land.

-That's interesting.

0:14:280:14:30

But just take a look at the outside entertaining space, because

0:14:300:14:34

again, we are very much boxed into how we live our lives in the UK.

0:14:340:14:40

You know, you come to a warm climate and... It's a

0:14:400:14:42

hot day today, it's going to be like this the majority of the year.

0:14:420:14:44

You're going to spend a lot of it outside.

0:14:440:14:47

If not in the sun, in the shade, but still outside.

0:14:470:14:49

It's a beautiful barbecue area.

0:14:490:14:51

Everything here is absolutely immaculate, but I just feel

0:14:510:14:56

that the size of the inside is just not big enough for our lifestyle.

0:14:560:15:02

Well, let's talk about the price of the house

0:15:020:15:04

because sometimes that can change people's minds.

0:15:040:15:07

How much do you think this property is on the market for?

0:15:070:15:11

-I'd probably put a figure of 380.

-OK.

0:15:110:15:15

Pissouri is a premium area and, with a view like this, I think it is more.

0:15:150:15:20

I'm going to say 450.

0:15:200:15:22

Interesting. The asking price is...

0:15:220:15:24

just over £368,000.

0:15:240:15:28

Quite shocked at that.

0:15:290:15:31

Now you know the price, sometimes things do change in your mind,

0:15:310:15:35

-don't they?

-They do.

-Why don't you go back inside?

0:15:350:15:38

-OK. Thank you.

-See you in a little while.

0:15:380:15:41

£80,000 below budget,

0:15:430:15:45

this modern hillside villa laid out over three floors

0:15:450:15:49

offers a kitchen-diner, separate sitting room and four bedrooms,

0:15:490:15:53

two with sea views.

0:15:530:15:55

Outside, there is a swimming pool, barbecue area

0:15:550:15:58

and a well-kept garden, with unrestricted views of the shoreline.

0:15:580:16:02

What do you think about this area for the dogs?

0:16:040:16:06

Their beds would go there, wouldn't they?

0:16:060:16:08

-Their beds would fit very well there, actually.

-They would.

0:16:080:16:11

-Keep them out of the way in the wintertime.

-Yeah.

0:16:110:16:14

I love to cook and I feel the kitchen is a little bit too small.

0:16:140:16:18

I am used to a much larger kitchen at home.

0:16:180:16:22

Well, the wow factor, without a doubt, has got to be the view.

0:16:220:16:25

Although I think the price is also quite attractive.

0:16:250:16:28

But it's just not quite enough space.

0:16:280:16:31

-Have you seen enough, you two?

-Yes.

-Yes?

0:16:310:16:34

-That's our first property done and dusted.

-Immaculate property.

0:16:340:16:39

-It's just a shame it's just that little bit too small inside.

-OK.

0:16:390:16:43

I don't know what else you've got in mind,

0:16:430:16:44

-but you've got a job to beat those views.

-I know,

0:16:440:16:46

those views are to die for, but we do have more up our sleeve.

0:16:460:16:50

-Let's go.

-Excellent.

0:16:500:16:52

We're approaching the end of our first day of house hunting

0:16:570:17:01

and David and Yola are settling into the rental

0:17:010:17:03

property in Pissouri, where we hope they will get a feel for local life.

0:17:030:17:08

And they don't waste any time,

0:17:080:17:10

as they enjoy their first evening meal alfresco.

0:17:100:17:14

So, here we are, David,

0:17:140:17:16

living the life, enjoying a little

0:17:160:17:19

bit of local cuisine that I've tried to put together for us.

0:17:190:17:24

You've done quite well, I think, tonight, quite well.

0:17:240:17:26

And I think actually being able to sit out in the open air

0:17:260:17:29

like we are now, evening in sort of early October, is very good.

0:17:290:17:34

It is the sort of thing that appeals to me.

0:17:340:17:36

We certainly wouldn't be able to do this at home.

0:17:360:17:39

I think we have started off well here in Cyprus with David and Yola.

0:17:440:17:48

When I first met them,

0:17:480:17:49

they said that this house hunt was all about finding

0:17:490:17:51

a property with fantastic views, that was their priority.

0:17:510:17:55

So after showing them our first house, it also transpires

0:17:550:17:59

they want space inside the property, and plenty of it.

0:17:590:18:02

So with our second house, they are going to get the space

0:18:020:18:05

that they want, but they are also going to get views to die for.

0:18:050:18:08

Our next property is in the village of Pachna.

0:18:100:18:13

This one lies ten minutes inland in the foothills

0:18:130:18:16

of the Troodos Mountains.

0:18:160:18:18

The 700-metre-plus altitude offering a cooler climate

0:18:180:18:22

has made this the largest wine producing village on the island.

0:18:220:18:26

And the community here are proud of their local produce.

0:18:260:18:29

Every year they hold a food and drink festival, which is

0:18:290:18:32

just the sort of authentic Cypriot experience

0:18:320:18:35

that David and Yola are keen to embrace.

0:18:350:18:38

Here, you can find fresh and dried fruit and the sweet delicacy

0:18:380:18:42

sotzoukos, which is made from walnuts or almonds

0:18:420:18:45

coated in dry grape juice.

0:18:450:18:47

And these agricultural roots are celebrated in the stories

0:18:470:18:51

told through traditional music and dance.

0:18:510:18:53

The next house we are going to look at borders the village

0:18:530:18:56

and is built into the hills.

0:18:560:18:58

So, here we are in the village of Pachna.

0:18:590:19:02

And this is your second property.

0:19:020:19:04

-It looks lovely.

-Very promising.

-Yes?

-Very promising indeed.

0:19:040:19:08

-The views, again, are amazing, absolutely amazing.

-Wonderful.

0:19:080:19:12

We are just slightly further inland,

0:19:120:19:14

but only 12 minutes from the beach.

0:19:140:19:16

So you have got a substantial property here.

0:19:160:19:19

You can actually see, you've got a bar area. Look at the ovens there.

0:19:190:19:23

-You've got a bread oven, a pizza oven.

-Yeah, wonderful.

0:19:230:19:25

How much entertaining are you two going to be doing

0:19:250:19:28

when you move to Cyprus?

0:19:280:19:29

It's difficult to say,

0:19:290:19:31

but with things like that, it could be quite a bit, I should think.

0:19:310:19:34

-So are you keen to step inside?

-Yes, very keen.

0:19:340:19:38

Well, the exterior of this stone-covered house

0:19:380:19:41

certainly seems to appeal to our buyers.

0:19:410:19:43

It took the present owners three years to build

0:19:430:19:46

and it comes with a welcome swimming pool for Cyprus' scorching summers.

0:19:460:19:51

It was the lack of internal space that let the first

0:19:510:19:53

property down, so let's see how this one measures up.

0:19:530:19:57

Oh, wow, space!

0:19:570:19:59

-This is more like it.

-You can't get away from that fabulous view.

0:19:590:20:04

-That really appeals to me.

-So, come on then, what about the kitchen?

0:20:040:20:07

We know the inside of the house is important.

0:20:070:20:10

You love your views, but you are also a fantastic cook.

0:20:100:20:13

It's lovely. It's very spacious, nice island.

0:20:130:20:16

You can sit round, have breakfast round the island.

0:20:160:20:19

It really does work.

0:20:190:20:21

Oh, I'm enjoying showing you around this property, I really am.

0:20:210:20:25

So, let's keep going. It's open plan. So down these steps.

0:20:250:20:29

You've got this huge living space.

0:20:310:20:34

It's lovely, absolutely wonderful.

0:20:340:20:36

I love the exposed stone there.

0:20:360:20:40

-It feels like home.

-Does it?

0:20:400:20:43

Yeah. I could live here, easily.

0:20:430:20:45

-That has to be the highest compliment, isn't it?

-Yes.

0:20:450:20:48

It's lovely. It really is.

0:20:480:20:50

-It's a beautiful house and it has been very well thought.

-Yeah.

0:20:500:20:55

So, tell me, how does this compare to your home in Cornwall?

0:20:550:20:59

It's a much more open space, but it just has that special feel.

0:20:590:21:04

I'm delighted with how David and Yola are responding to

0:21:040:21:08

this house, which is spread over four floors.

0:21:080:21:11

The basement houses a spacious snug, but I'm taking them upstairs,

0:21:110:21:15

where there is a large family bathroom,

0:21:150:21:18

shower room and five double bedrooms.

0:21:180:21:21

Three are on the top floor with two on the first floor,

0:21:210:21:24

one of which is the master.

0:21:240:21:26

So, here is your bedroom.

0:21:270:21:30

The view again is lovely.

0:21:300:21:32

-Nice and spacious as well. It's a good size.

-Good size. No storage.

0:21:320:21:36

Ah, no storage...yet.

0:21:360:21:38

Behind you, you've got your shower room, you're en suite.

0:21:380:21:42

And behind me, no need for a wardrobe...

0:21:420:21:44

Cos look at that - there's a dressing room.

0:21:460:21:48

-That's not bad, is it?

-No, it's not.

0:21:480:21:51

So again, you've got enough room if you wanted to

0:21:510:21:53

to have wardrobes in here, but you do have your dressing area.

0:21:530:21:57

-So do you think you could cope with this size bedroom?

-Yes.

0:21:570:22:00

-Not too much of a compromise?

-No.

-OK.

0:22:000:22:03

The tour of the inside has gone well, but the outside space is just

0:22:030:22:07

as important, especially with three dogs and a cat coming to live here.

0:22:070:22:12

But I think this garden has a feature that might be able

0:22:120:22:15

to accommodate them.

0:22:150:22:17

So let's talk a little bit more about the house and the land.

0:22:170:22:21

At the back of the property, the way it is set up at the moment,

0:22:210:22:24

cos they have a young family, they've got...I'm going to call it

0:22:240:22:27

a cage for want of a better word.

0:22:270:22:28

It has got a small football pitch on it, sort of a miniature one.

0:22:280:22:31

It is going to stay here.

0:22:310:22:33

-That would make a wonderful kennel and run for the dogs.

-Really?

0:22:330:22:36

-So you'd actually keep it?

-Oh, absolutely, yes.

0:22:360:22:39

Cos I wasn't sure. Some people would want to take that down.

0:22:390:22:42

-It actually works in your favour.

-Yes, it does.

0:22:420:22:44

What I haven't mentioned, David, your hobby - stargazing.

0:22:440:22:48

At home, I am restricted by very tall trees

0:22:480:22:50

and I get a very narrow field of view.

0:22:500:22:52

There is 180, 200 degree panorama, a wonderful view of the night sky,

0:22:520:22:57

which will be extremely clear on a large number of days in the year.

0:22:570:23:01

So, we have discussed the merits of the property and its location,

0:23:010:23:05

but now let's put a price on it.

0:23:050:23:07

We've got to take into account the view

0:23:070:23:09

and the wonderful downstairs to the property.

0:23:090:23:13

I don't think the upstairs has quite got the wow factor.

0:23:130:23:16

There is a lack of garden, but it has got to be

0:23:160:23:18

pretty near the top of our budget area, I would have thought.

0:23:180:23:22

I'll go for 430.

0:23:220:23:25

OK.

0:23:250:23:26

I'm going to say 420.

0:23:260:23:28

Well, the asking price is £486,000.

0:23:280:23:34

Now, the house has only just gone on the market.

0:23:340:23:36

It has gone on a month, but the owner is aware of your budget

0:23:360:23:39

and is happy to negotiate.

0:23:390:23:41

Go on and have a wander on your own and have a good think.

0:23:410:23:44

-All right.

-Right.

0:23:440:23:46

Although this property is a little over budget at £486,000,

0:23:460:23:51

in this market, there is room for negotiation.

0:23:510:23:54

It would give them a stunning open plan kitchen-diner,

0:23:540:23:57

a sitting room with wraparound views, five bedrooms,

0:23:570:24:01

a swimming pool, an outdoor bar and an enclosed sports pitch,

0:24:010:24:05

which could be converted into kennels for the dogs.

0:24:050:24:09

This is a nice room, David. We could make this into a guest room.

0:24:090:24:13

Look, they lie in bed and look at that vista.

0:24:130:24:16

The first impressions when you walk in the front door are - it is

0:24:160:24:20

a magnificent property, absolutely stunning views.

0:24:200:24:23

You couldn't really ask for anything more.

0:24:230:24:25

The downsides from my point of view are the outside area,

0:24:250:24:29

in as much there's no garden area.

0:24:290:24:31

The downstairs had a real wow factor.

0:24:310:24:35

The upstairs was a little bit disappointing.

0:24:350:24:39

Outside is great.

0:24:390:24:41

This could be a contender.

0:24:410:24:43

-You've seen enough?

-Food for thought. Lot of thinking needed.

0:24:430:24:47

-Good. You don't want to say goodbye to that view, do you?

-No.

-No.

0:24:470:24:50

But I'm going to have to drag you away, I'm afraid. Let's go.

0:24:500:24:54

The imposing Troodos mountains spread across 75 miles

0:25:010:25:04

of Cyprus' south-western region.

0:25:040:25:07

Monasteries and villages are enveloped by pine and cedar forests,

0:25:070:25:11

and the area was declared a national park in 1992.

0:25:110:25:16

As David and Yola are interested in learning as much as

0:25:170:25:20

they can about the island and are self-proclaimed animal lovers,

0:25:200:25:24

we have sent them to a donkey sanctuary in the mountains,

0:25:240:25:27

where Merapi and her husband Antonis run donkey safaris.

0:25:270:25:31

What are donkeys used for in Cyprus these days?

0:25:330:25:36

Well, they're used for labouring the fields.

0:25:360:25:40

Also, years ago, they used to have them in their homes.

0:25:400:25:43

Every family had a donkey.

0:25:430:25:45

They were very important for many things. Even in British rule

0:25:450:25:50

and Ottoman rule, the economy relied on farming

0:25:500:25:54

and this was the only way of transporting their goods.

0:25:540:25:57

The Cypriot donkey is also said to be the strongest donkey family.

0:25:570:26:02

They have a bigger build

0:26:020:26:04

and they are taller than other donkeys in the Middle East.

0:26:040:26:08

With the advent of modern technology,

0:26:080:26:11

the donkey population of Cyprus has diminished in recent years.

0:26:110:26:15

Merapi uses her tours as a means of preventing this unique

0:26:150:26:18

breed from becoming extinct as well as educating

0:26:180:26:21

visitors about the landscape.

0:26:210:26:23

This is Mount Olympus, Troodos mountain.

0:26:250:26:29

It is the highest mountain we have in Cyprus.

0:26:290:26:31

And this is the next highest mountain, it's called Papoutsa.

0:26:310:26:35

We have ski areas as well, where people can come during the winter.

0:26:370:26:41

Hard to believe that you have snow

0:26:410:26:43

when it is so warm down in the Limassol area.

0:26:430:26:47

Well, everything is compact. You have the sea,

0:26:470:26:50

you have the mountains.

0:26:500:26:53

It's all together, just on one island.

0:26:530:26:55

Having taken in the incredible scenery,

0:26:570:26:59

David and Yola are riding their way into the village of Apaisia,

0:26:590:27:03

where there are 2,000-year-old archaeological finds.

0:27:030:27:06

But it is not just antiquities to be found here, there is

0:27:060:27:10

also an ancient natural phenomenon.

0:27:100:27:12

They have this tree in this village, and is dated at 1,500 years old.

0:27:120:27:18

It is called the Tremithos tree.

0:27:180:27:20

This is one of the oldest trees on the island?

0:27:200:27:22

It is the oldest tree on the island.

0:27:220:27:25

It produces seeds which is used for cooking or making pies

0:27:250:27:30

or you can eat the seeds alone.

0:27:300:27:32

Also there is a gum that the tree produces, which is

0:27:320:27:35

used mainly in desserts or for producing chewing gum.

0:27:350:27:39

David and Yola may well have made some new donkey companions,

0:27:400:27:44

but they have their own four-legged friends to think about,

0:27:440:27:47

which means finding them a suitable home,

0:27:470:27:50

so it's back to the house hunt.

0:27:500:27:52

For our next property, we are heading back to Pissouri,

0:27:580:28:01

a village our buyers consider desirable.

0:28:010:28:04

It is also located within a handy 30-minute drive

0:28:040:28:07

from the region's capital, Limassol.

0:28:070:28:10

This is a city that is steeped in history.

0:28:100:28:12

The Grand Mosque and Greek Orthodox Ayia Napa Cathedral reminds us

0:28:120:28:16

of the island's strategic position

0:28:160:28:19

as the gateway between Europe and the Middle East.

0:28:190:28:22

In the city's old town is Limassol Castle,

0:28:220:28:25

which has been attacked and occupied

0:28:250:28:27

on more than four separate occasions,

0:28:270:28:29

most recently by the British.

0:28:290:28:31

Just 12 kilometres to the east of Pissouri is

0:28:310:28:34

the Aphrodite Hills Golf Course, which might appeal

0:28:340:28:37

to our couple, who are interested in taking up new hobbies.

0:28:370:28:41

Back down on the outskirts of Pissouri village

0:28:410:28:44

is our next property.

0:28:440:28:45

So, we bought you back to Pissouri. We know you love this area.

0:28:450:28:49

Beautiful entrance, very colourful.

0:28:490:28:52

It's a nice, solid house.

0:28:520:28:53

Built in 2005.

0:28:530:28:56

The current owners have had it since then. They bought it as new.

0:28:560:28:59

So, does it appeal to you, David, being the green-fingered gardener?

0:28:590:29:03

It looks promising.

0:29:030:29:05

It looks very nice, the steps up to the front door there.

0:29:050:29:08

Nice porch with the colourful flowers.

0:29:080:29:11

The entrance is quite impressive.

0:29:110:29:13

-Quite inviting.

-Good. You might have noticed, you've got a garage there.

0:29:130:29:16

-Yes.

-To the side, there is another entrance already gated in.

0:29:160:29:20

It would be perfect for the dogs.

0:29:200:29:22

It's even got its own shade. So, are we ready to start the tour?

0:29:220:29:26

-Let's go.

-Let's go.

0:29:260:29:28

The current owners moved into this modern house eight years ago,

0:29:280:29:32

just after it was built.

0:29:320:29:33

And, as we make our way inside, I'm hoping that the open plan

0:29:330:29:37

living area will be the sort of space that our buyers are after.

0:29:370:29:41

So, we're actually coming upstairs for the living accommodation.

0:29:410:29:46

Well, that's a good response to me, David, I'm loving that.

0:29:500:29:53

-I'm just trying to think of the right word.

-Come on, tell me.

0:29:530:29:57

-Be honest, come on.

-I'm not overwhelmed.

-Right.

0:29:570:30:01

That's all I can really say at the moment.

0:30:010:30:03

-OK.

-I like the view, but on the other hand...

0:30:030:30:06

I think the thing I don't like is the surround of the windows

0:30:060:30:11

and the door, it reminds me of a taverna.

0:30:110:30:16

Right.

0:30:160:30:17

How do you feel about the actual room itself?

0:30:170:30:20

It hasn't got a wow factor.

0:30:200:30:22

You know, when you come in through the front door of the house,

0:30:220:30:25

and it just didn't have that appeal, that instant appeal. I don't know.

0:30:250:30:30

-It just isn't working?

-No.

-OK.

0:30:300:30:32

Well, it has that open plan thing, but the kitchen is separate,

0:30:320:30:35

-so I'm going to keep showing you around anyway.

-Right, OK.

0:30:350:30:38

-You know, I'm going to say this is a good size.

-Yes, it's OK.

0:30:380:30:41

I was waiting for you to say, "It's too small."

0:30:410:30:44

-Hasn't got a vast amount of workspace.

-No.

0:30:440:30:47

-And you haven't got an island.

-No. It's...

-It's manageable.

0:30:470:30:51

Yes, serviceable. Manageable.

0:30:510:30:53

So, this is where normally I say, "Let's head upstairs to see the bedrooms,"

0:30:530:30:57

but this house is just that little bit different.

0:30:570:30:59

We're going to go downstairs.

0:30:590:31:01

First impressions might not be positive,

0:31:010:31:04

but there is a lot more to see in this topsy-turvy house,

0:31:040:31:07

which has two further floors beneath us,

0:31:070:31:09

so perhaps we will get some better reactions down here.

0:31:090:31:13

So the actual master bedroom is below the living areas.

0:31:140:31:18

I think, David, as we were walking,

0:31:180:31:19

you mentioned this is an upside down house.

0:31:190:31:22

It you are absolutely right.

0:31:220:31:23

It's not a bad room, this one, I think.

0:31:230:31:25

-You've got storage space here as well.

-Yes.

0:31:250:31:27

Just through that door, you've got an en suite as well.

0:31:270:31:30

So, we've got thumbs up from this room,

0:31:300:31:33

I haven't we? Or are you just being polite with me?

0:31:330:31:35

No, I'm happy with this. Not excited, but happy.

0:31:350:31:38

It's a nice, airy room.

0:31:380:31:42

Finally, I'm getting some sense of positivity.

0:31:420:31:46

Down another set of stairs, are two more double bedrooms,

0:31:460:31:49

but I'm taking us outside to an easy-to-maintain lawnless garden.

0:31:490:31:54

So, you've got your own private balcony there.

0:31:540:31:56

You've got another balcony up there. And this is where the bedrooms are.

0:31:560:32:01

It all leads out onto the garden.

0:32:010:32:04

So, what this house does have is quite a good-sized garden around it.

0:32:050:32:10

You can see, it has sort of been laid to gravel.

0:32:100:32:13

You've also got an oversized gazebo, and it's thatched. Do you like it?

0:32:130:32:18

Very much. It is a lovely, lovely feature in the garden.

0:32:180:32:22

Although I like this style of garden, it tends to remind me

0:32:220:32:25

of a Japanese-style garden, which have always appealed to me.

0:32:250:32:28

And I've always wanted one of those very large pots.

0:32:280:32:31

Ever since I came to Cyprus for the first time...

0:32:310:32:33

-Really?

-..I wanted one of those pots.

-A Cypriot pot.

0:32:330:32:36

That is going to be the first purchase when you buy a house,

0:32:360:32:38

-is it?

-Could be, could be.

0:32:380:32:40

Nice pool.

0:32:400:32:41

-See, you two didn't actually ask for a pool, did you?

-We didn't, no.

0:32:410:32:45

That wasn't on the list. I think we are

0:32:450:32:47

going to be pushed to look at properties over here without pools.

0:32:470:32:50

-They seem to come practically standard, don't they?

-Yes.

0:32:500:32:54

-I think this is a really attractive property.

-From here, it is.

0:32:540:32:57

It was just that initial reaction, wasn't it?

0:32:570:32:59

-Yeah.

-That room upstairs seemed completely wrong.

-Fair enough.

0:32:590:33:03

I think I know your feelings on the house, but let's

0:33:030:33:06

talk about the price, because sometimes that does change things.

0:33:060:33:09

How much do you think this house is on the market for?

0:33:090:33:12

I think I'd put about 375.

0:33:120:33:15

-OK. Yola?

-I say 360.

0:33:160:33:19

The current asking price is £355,000.

0:33:190:33:24

That puts a slightly different slant on it.

0:33:240:33:27

Now, I will add that this house has come down quite considerably

0:33:270:33:30

over the last 18 months or so, and I think it'd be fair to say

0:33:300:33:34

the majority of the properties here in Cyprus are in the same position.

0:33:340:33:37

The housing market is very sticky.

0:33:370:33:40

Nothing is moving very fast. So, you know, you can negotiate on price.

0:33:400:33:45

Have a think, and why don't you take a second look around?

0:33:450:33:48

Check out those additional bedrooms on that very ground floor.

0:33:480:33:51

And think perhaps what changes that you could make with that money.

0:33:510:33:54

I think you are going to start with the windows.

0:33:540:33:57

I don't ever want to hear about them again. Off you go.

0:33:570:34:00

This property may not have wowed our buyers,

0:34:010:34:04

but at £355,000, it is almost £100,000 under budget.

0:34:040:34:10

It has...

0:34:100:34:11

Yes, I think the storage in this house is very much a plus point.

0:34:190:34:21

-It is. Excellent storage.

-Yeah.

0:34:210:34:25

Good.

0:34:250:34:27

When I initially walked into the property,

0:34:270:34:29

it just didn't have the right feel. It is a very interesting property.

0:34:290:34:34

It has a beautiful garden area and a lovely, lovely gazebo.

0:34:340:34:39

The view from the upstairs reception room doesn't appeal to me

0:34:390:34:44

and the room itself doesn't gel. I don't think I am being too fussy.

0:34:440:34:50

It will be a last move, probably,

0:34:500:34:53

so it has got to be right.

0:34:530:34:55

Well, that didn't quite go according to plan.

0:34:550:34:58

Are you guys ready to leave now?

0:34:580:35:01

Yes. Very interesting house. Lovely garden.

0:35:010:35:04

-But, at the end of the day, I don't think it is for us.

-No? Not for you?

0:35:040:35:08

-No.

-OK, all right. We tried. We did try.

0:35:080:35:10

Our buyers are keen to embrace Cypriot culture, and Yola

0:35:160:35:20

sees her passion for cooking local cuisine as one way to do this,

0:35:200:35:24

so we have arranged for her and David to meet ex-pat Tracy Dyer,

0:35:240:35:27

who manages her own cookery school here.

0:35:270:35:30

-Cooking today, yeah? I hear you love it.

-I do.

0:35:310:35:34

We're going to taste the results, hopefully,

0:35:340:35:36

-so enjoy, get the whole experience.

-Come on, then.

-Thank you.

0:35:360:35:39

Tracy is teaching Yola how to make spanocopita,

0:35:390:35:43

a Cypriot dish made with anari cheese, which is similar to ricotta,

0:35:430:35:47

feta, dill, parsley, olive oil and spinach.

0:35:470:35:50

So what we need to do is crumble the two cheeses in.

0:35:510:35:55

So you need to get your hands stuck in, there's no other way.

0:35:550:35:59

So how long have you been in Cyprus?

0:35:590:36:01

-Well, I've been here 12 years now.

-You love living here?

0:36:010:36:04

I adore living in Cyprus. The fact that life here seems to be so easy.

0:36:040:36:09

The traffic is not too bad, the people are relaxed.

0:36:090:36:12

And it doesn't seem to matter what happens, we have another day.

0:36:120:36:16

-Do you enjoy Cypriot cooking?

-I love Cypriot cooking.

0:36:160:36:19

In fact, before we moved over here,

0:36:190:36:21

I was really into doing Cypriot food as well.

0:36:210:36:23

So, by moving over here and getting all the right ingredients

0:36:230:36:27

and the real feel of the place, this made it so much better.

0:36:270:36:30

Now that all these ingredients are mixed together, it's time to prepare

0:36:300:36:34

the filo pastry by brushing it with olive oil and butter.

0:36:340:36:38

So you can buy most things in the supermarkets here now?

0:36:380:36:41

Well, you can. It has changed so much in the last 12 years.

0:36:410:36:45

When I first came here, it wasn't like that. But now anything goes.

0:36:450:36:50

And is food expensive here now?

0:36:500:36:53

A lot of people have said that the cost of living in Cyprus is

0:36:530:36:56

really, really high. And yes, it can be if you buy the wrong ingredients.

0:36:560:37:02

Now, I always advocate that people buy local,

0:37:020:37:05

buy foods that are in season, readily available

0:37:050:37:09

and also get friends with your local greengrocers.

0:37:090:37:12

It is a very different way of shopping in Cyprus.

0:37:120:37:16

The mixture is then placed in a dish and covered with filo pastry.

0:37:160:37:19

And after half an hour in the oven, it is ready for us all to tuck in.

0:37:190:37:24

It gives our buyers the chance to discuss with Tracy

0:37:240:37:27

and her friend Adele, originally from Scotland who works with her,

0:37:270:37:30

the challenges they might face moving to Cyprus.

0:37:300:37:34

Obviously, Tracy, you have been here for 12 years.

0:37:340:37:36

You have seen Cyprus boom.

0:37:360:37:38

-But you have also been here for the bust as well.

-That's true.

0:37:380:37:41

How is the economy now?

0:37:410:37:42

How are the locals feeling about how the country is doing?

0:37:420:37:44

Well, I think the Cypriots, especially the Cypriots,

0:37:440:37:47

they are pretty stalwart people and they are forging forward,

0:37:470:37:49

tightening their purse strings.

0:37:490:37:52

And they are also very family orientated.

0:37:520:37:55

So I think when somebody goes down,

0:37:550:37:58

somebody else in the family will help out.

0:37:580:38:00

-Tracy, do you speak Greek?

-Unfortunately, no. Bad question.

0:38:000:38:05

Very, very small amounts.

0:38:050:38:07

One of the things that happened in Cyprus...

0:38:070:38:10

I mean, I always meant to learn to speak Greek,

0:38:100:38:12

but the Cypriots are very, very good at speaking English and,

0:38:120:38:16

I know it is my excuse,

0:38:160:38:17

but it has happened that way and there are not many places you

0:38:170:38:21

go in Cyprus where there is not somebody who speaks English.

0:38:210:38:24

-There are a lot of signs in the Greek language.

-That's for sure.

0:38:240:38:28

-So, how...? If you can't speak...?

-I can read it.

0:38:280:38:31

You can read it?

0:38:310:38:32

Yes, I've made a point of learning the Greek alphabet.

0:38:320:38:35

I can read almost all the signs that are about.

0:38:350:38:38

And, over the years, it has just become second nature that

0:38:380:38:40

I know what that says in Greek.

0:38:400:38:42

But one of the words I do know is kopiaste, and kopiaste means

0:38:420:38:47

welcome to my table, which is what you are doing now.

0:38:470:38:50

-How lovely.

-It is a word they use up in the villages.

0:38:500:38:53

If you're walking past and they say, "Kopiaste."

0:38:530:38:56

The Cypriots really appreciate you being able to speak Greek.

0:38:560:39:00

Adele knows, she speaks Greek, and she gets along very well.

0:39:000:39:05

I have to call her in and say, "Come on, help me

0:39:050:39:07

"out with the workmen here," or whatever it might be.

0:39:070:39:10

And they really do appreciate it.

0:39:100:39:12

Is there anything sort of socially that you miss living in Cyprus?

0:39:120:39:16

Cos the merits of having sunshine for, what is that,

0:39:160:39:18

ten months of the year must outweigh everything.

0:39:180:39:22

But are there theatre groups or if you wanted to go to cinema

0:39:220:39:24

is that easy to do?

0:39:240:39:26

I think more so here than anywhere else I have been, actually.

0:39:260:39:29

There is a lot of energy here and a lot of cultural stuff going on.

0:39:290:39:32

That's where Adele and I met, actually.

0:39:320:39:34

We were both working in a theatre group.

0:39:340:39:37

I was doing costumes, Adele was doing props.

0:39:370:39:39

And we both loved arts, we both loved food and the same lifestyle.

0:39:390:39:44

That was three or four years ago now.

0:39:440:39:46

And would you advise people if they have a passion for that

0:39:460:39:49

sort of type of thing to actually join them to make friends?

0:39:490:39:52

Absolutely.

0:39:520:39:53

-That's how you make friends.

-So, what do you think of Yola's cooking?

0:39:530:39:57

Delicious, well done to you.

0:39:570:39:58

Cheers, everyone. Thank you so much for making us so welcome.

0:39:580:40:01

ALL: Yeia mas.

0:40:010:40:03

Well, that has given David and Yola some food for thought,

0:40:070:40:11

but before they complete this move,

0:40:110:40:12

there are a few practical considerations worth noting.

0:40:120:40:16

It is strongly recommended to find independent legal advice

0:40:160:40:20

for any financial transactions undertaken.

0:40:200:40:23

A lawyer should make sure that a property's title deeds are made

0:40:230:40:26

available as proof of ownership can be an issue on the island.

0:40:260:40:30

A search should be carried out for any pre-existing

0:40:300:40:33

mortgages on the property or land.

0:40:330:40:36

Various additional costs will include legal,

0:40:360:40:38

transfer and agents' fees, which are calculated on a sliding scale

0:40:380:40:43

and can vary between 7% to 16% of the purchase property price.

0:40:430:40:48

Finally, as inheritance rules are different to those of the UK, it is

0:40:480:40:52

worth considering writing a separate will for any Cypriot-based assets.

0:40:520:40:57

We're in the Mediterranean with house hunters David and Yola,

0:41:010:41:05

who are looking to move from the Cornish countryside

0:41:050:41:07

to sun-soaked Cyprus.

0:41:070:41:09

They're doing all they can to immerse themselves into island life,

0:41:100:41:14

but with just one day to go, they still need to find their dream home.

0:41:140:41:18

We've shown David and Yola some splendid properties here in the

0:41:200:41:23

Limassol region of Cyprus, but I'm not sure any of them have been

0:41:230:41:27

quite right for our couple, so now it's the turn of the mystery house.

0:41:270:41:32

We've decided to show them

0:41:320:41:34

something very different from the modern homes they've seen before.

0:41:340:41:37

This one's old, it's got character

0:41:370:41:40

and it's right in the centre of a Cypriot village.

0:41:400:41:42

Well, they did say they wanted to live with the locals.

0:41:420:41:46

Our final property location takes us to the village of Anogyra,

0:41:470:41:51

which lies to the north of Pissouri

0:41:510:41:53

and is a 12-minute drive away from the nearest beach.

0:41:530:41:56

On the ascent towards the centre of the village are remains

0:41:570:42:00

of the 15th century monastery Timiou Stavrou, or Holy Cross.

0:42:000:42:05

Legend has it there's an unexcavated underground tunnel here,

0:42:050:42:08

where the monks have buried their treasures.

0:42:080:42:11

The property we're looking at is just up the road

0:42:110:42:14

and lies at the heart of this pretty village.

0:42:140:42:17

-This is your mystery house.

-Very different, isn't it?

-Very different.

0:42:170:42:22

Through the wooden doors.

0:42:220:42:24

This doesn't have the same views as some of the previous properties

0:42:240:42:28

we've looked at, but what it does have is character and charm.

0:42:280:42:32

It's almost English in a way that is continental.

0:42:320:42:35

-It sounds stupid, but...

-Welcoming.

-The word's definitely welcoming.

0:42:350:42:39

So is it enticing us in, the mystery house?

0:42:390:42:41

-It is a mystery.

-Open the doors.

0:42:410:42:43

Thank you, I will.

0:42:430:42:44

DOOR CREAKS

0:42:450:42:47

So come on in.

0:42:470:42:49

It's like a little oasis.

0:42:490:42:51

-A secret garden.

-It is.

0:42:510:42:53

A beautifully kept secret garden.

0:42:530:42:56

That's the first thing that strikes you as you walk in, but also,

0:42:560:42:59

as you can see, there's a lot of shade here because it gets so hot.

0:42:590:43:03

It's lovely. Very pretty.

0:43:030:43:05

Looking at the garden, it looks quite interesting.

0:43:050:43:08

-It's more in line with what I think I want.

-Yes, it's very different.

0:43:080:43:12

My initial reaction is where are the animals going to go?

0:43:120:43:16

A very good point.

0:43:160:43:18

Your beloved pets, but it's the mystery house,

0:43:180:43:21

so we might need to be a tad flexible.

0:43:210:43:23

-OK.

-Shall we start the tour?

-Yes.

0:43:230:43:26

I realise how important David and Yola's pets are to them,

0:43:270:43:31

but they are also making this continental move for themselves.

0:43:310:43:35

I think this traditional 200-year-old property

0:43:350:43:38

should challenge them.

0:43:380:43:40

So, step inside our mystery house,

0:43:400:43:43

cos it's very different from everything else we've seen.

0:43:430:43:46

-Very charming.

-Beautiful, isn't it?

-A cottage feeling.

-Yes.

0:43:460:43:51

A real village house.

0:43:510:43:53

You have got a fire there, but it is electric,

0:43:530:43:55

which you're going to need in the winter months.

0:43:550:43:58

That heats up this part of the property.

0:43:580:44:00

Then you've got this exposed stone, local stone all the way round.

0:44:000:44:03

-Like that.

-Beautiful, isn't it?

0:44:030:44:06

This is a traditional Cypriot ceiling. It's actually reed.

0:44:060:44:09

-Here's your sitting area. Do you think that's cosy?

-It is.

0:44:090:44:14

No, I think that's very cosy.

0:44:140:44:16

How do we feel about the kitchen?

0:44:160:44:18

It's in keeping with the property, but it's very, very small.

0:44:180:44:22

-Shall we head upstairs?

-Yes.

0:44:220:44:23

The current British owners have lived here for 12 years

0:44:250:44:28

and have retained the original features,

0:44:280:44:30

including a stone staircase which leads us up

0:44:300:44:33

to the first floor where there's a roomy bathroom with a corner tub

0:44:330:44:36

and two double bedrooms, one of which would be for them.

0:44:360:44:41

So, here's your master bedroom.

0:44:410:44:44

It's a nice room. With the ceiling it gives it height and depth.

0:44:440:44:49

It's very nice, and there is storage.

0:44:490:44:52

You're right about the ceiling. It does make a difference, doesn't it?

0:44:520:44:55

It does, yeah.

0:44:550:44:57

Would this be big enough as a master bedroom.

0:44:570:45:00

-I would have thought so, yeah.

-Yeah.

0:45:000:45:03

On a clear day when you're sitting in bed,

0:45:030:45:05

you could look out and see the sea.

0:45:050:45:08

-Can you spot it from there, David?

-Yes, you can just see it.

-Yeah.

0:45:080:45:11

What you don't have, I know, in Cornwall, is a balcony like this.

0:45:110:45:15

How would you fancy sitting here

0:45:180:45:20

having your first morning cup of tea?

0:45:200:45:23

Already dreaming about it.

0:45:230:45:26

Isn't it charming?

0:45:260:45:27

It's lovely.

0:45:270:45:28

I think it works so well. So you've seen the master bedroom.

0:45:280:45:32

There's another very large double bedroom next door,

0:45:320:45:35

so they both share this balcony, plus storage.

0:45:350:45:38

As much storage as you need.

0:45:380:45:40

Plenty. But there is some additional space.

0:45:400:45:43

If you look to the end of the garden, down the end

0:45:430:45:46

of the secret garden, you can see there's an additional building.

0:45:460:45:50

That is a third bedroom. If you had guests coming to stay,

0:45:500:45:53

you could put them at the end of the garden. They'd be more than happy.

0:45:530:45:56

It's also got its own shower room down there as well.

0:45:560:45:59

It's very private.

0:45:590:46:01

So it means the two of you have the rest of the house -

0:46:010:46:04

with the animals, if there's enough space for them.

0:46:040:46:06

Perhaps the animals sleep down there. Perhaps that's the answer.

0:46:060:46:09

Exactly. A very grand kennel.

0:46:090:46:11

You're both very taken with this property though, aren't you?

0:46:130:46:16

It's charming.

0:46:160:46:17

This mystery house appears to be working its magic.

0:46:170:46:21

As we head to the courtyard garden,

0:46:210:46:23

will green-fingered David remain just as enthralled?

0:46:230:46:26

-So just standing here, you do get to see the Mediterranean garden.

-Ideal.

0:46:270:46:32

It's a nice little garden.

0:46:320:46:34

Got scope for doing quite a bit.

0:46:340:46:36

Also, it's a different type of planting than we're used to at home.

0:46:360:46:40

I think that's the attraction of it. I want to do something different.

0:46:400:46:43

The house is absolutely charming.

0:46:430:46:46

It has lack of space, especially with the animals,

0:46:460:46:50

but that does not distract what a lovely property it is.

0:46:500:46:53

It's very individual.

0:46:530:46:55

Go on, then, Yola.

0:46:550:46:57

Have a stab - what price would you put on this house?

0:46:570:47:00

315.

0:47:010:47:03

Interesting. David?

0:47:030:47:05

I'd go 350.

0:47:050:47:07

Would you be surprised if I said you were £100,000 out?

0:47:070:47:11

Which way?

0:47:110:47:12

You're above. It is on the market for £250,000.

0:47:130:47:17

Ooh.

0:47:170:47:19

I don't need to tell you that would save you £200,000 off your budget.

0:47:190:47:24

A useful £200,000.

0:47:240:47:25

It's just another way, perhaps, of living your lives over here.

0:47:270:47:30

Just gives you so many options, doesn't it?

0:47:300:47:33

My heart loves this house,

0:47:330:47:35

but it's not really practical for three animals on a permanent basis.

0:47:350:47:39

-That's the only downside I can see.

-It's absolutely charming.

0:47:390:47:43

You do fall in love with it. It wraps itself around you, somehow.

0:47:430:47:48

Why don't you have another wander?

0:47:480:47:49

Go and check out the garden room at the end.

0:47:490:47:51

Have a chat amongst yourselves.

0:47:510:47:53

Explore the whole property, cos at that price,

0:47:530:47:56

it does give you some options.

0:47:560:47:58

Have a think. Off you go.

0:47:590:48:01

Well, we love the mystery house.

0:48:050:48:07

There's always something just that little bit different.

0:48:070:48:11

I know that they have fallen in love with it. That's the fact.

0:48:110:48:14

It might be on the small side for them,

0:48:140:48:17

but they could be very happy here.

0:48:170:48:19

So at just £250,000, this house would leave our buyers

0:48:190:48:24

with a significant amount of money to spare.

0:48:240:48:27

It comes with three bedrooms, one of which is in a separate cottage,

0:48:270:48:31

and three bathrooms.

0:48:310:48:33

It has an open-plan kitchen and living area,

0:48:330:48:35

and an enchanting paved courtyard garden.

0:48:350:48:39

That's nice as well. Nice touch.

0:48:390:48:41

-Yes. It would make a nice guestroom this.

-Yeah, a lovely guestroom.

0:48:410:48:45

Very, very nice.

0:48:450:48:47

The whole idea of us coming to live in Cyprus is to be

0:48:470:48:51

part of a community, to adopt the Cypriot way of life.

0:48:510:48:55

In this house, you could do that.

0:48:550:48:58

I think this is a beautiful home.

0:48:580:49:00

It's got bags of character.

0:49:000:49:02

My only disappointment with it -

0:49:040:49:06

there's just not enough room for the dogs.

0:49:060:49:08

Otherwise, I think I'd buy it just like that.

0:49:080:49:11

David and Yola have now looked at all four of our properties,

0:49:130:49:16

so we're leaving them with plenty to think about.

0:49:160:49:19

For nearly 4,000 years,

0:49:250:49:27

the native carob tree has been cultivated in Cyprus.

0:49:270:49:30

By the 20th century, the carob, which is the fruit of the tree, had

0:49:300:49:34

become a major export for the island

0:49:340:49:36

and led to it being turned the black gold of Cyprus.

0:49:360:49:40

Used as an additive in confectionary, it's derivatives

0:49:400:49:43

can be used for medicines, paper and photographic film plates.

0:49:430:49:48

I've come to Anogyra, which lies to the west of Limassol.

0:49:480:49:51

This village not only features a carob museum,

0:49:510:49:54

but is also said to be the only place that produces pastelli,

0:49:540:49:58

a toffee-like sweet made of carob.

0:49:580:50:00

I'm meeting Johanna, whose family has been working with pastelli

0:50:020:50:05

for three generations,

0:50:050:50:07

to learn what's involved in making this local treat.

0:50:070:50:10

So I've seen carob in health food shops.

0:50:110:50:14

-I haven't seen pastelli.

-Pastelli.

0:50:140:50:17

-What's that?

-It's like caramel.

0:50:170:50:20

There's a very small piece.

0:50:200:50:23

We have it like a snack,

0:50:230:50:25

if we want to eat something sweet instead of sugar.

0:50:250:50:28

Johanna, I have such a sweet tooth,

0:50:280:50:30

I can't wait to see what you produce.

0:50:300:50:32

-Come in with me and I'll show you the whole process.

-Thank you.

0:50:320:50:35

The Cypriot variety of carob is known to contain

0:50:350:50:38

a much higher percentage of sugars,

0:50:380:50:41

which makes it a perfect core ingredient for pastelli.

0:50:410:50:43

-So that's the actual fruit of the tree.

-This is the carob, yes.

0:50:450:50:49

We can crush it. Crush it. Yes, you can try it.

0:50:490:50:52

-Mm!

-As you can see, we have here the exact product from the trees.

-Yes.

0:50:560:51:02

You can see here...

0:51:020:51:04

This is ground carobs. We buy it in order to make the pastelli.

0:51:060:51:11

And it's the whole part, isn't it, skin, everything?

0:51:110:51:14

It's the whole part, and we crush it.

0:51:140:51:17

In order to produce pastelli, the ground carob is soaked in water in

0:51:170:51:21

this 80-year-old ceramic pot for 14 hours before juice can be extracted.

0:51:210:51:27

We pour the mixture from the ceramic pot

0:51:270:51:30

and we put it in here in order to separate the solid from the liquid.

0:51:300:51:36

So the water runs down here, does it, the juice?

0:51:360:51:39

-Afterwards, we put it in this huge pot.

-It's like a cauldron.

-Yes.

0:51:390:51:45

As you can see, there is a fire underneath this.

0:51:450:51:49

It helps it to evaporate the whole water.

0:51:490:51:52

The liquid then has to be periodically stirred for four hours

0:51:530:51:56

until it turns to syrup.

0:51:560:51:58

It is then poured out and takes half an hour to set.

0:51:580:52:01

So, Nicki, now we're going to stretch the pastelli

0:52:090:52:12

in order to change colour.

0:52:120:52:14

-People have been doing this process for thousands of years.

-Yes, yes.

0:52:140:52:19

-Ah, we have my grandma. She's the original stretcher.

-Is she?

-Yes.

0:52:190:52:26

What I love here is three generations of family all

0:52:260:52:29

working together, really quickly, everyone's concentrating.

0:52:290:52:32

I suppose the consistency you've got to do it while it's still pliable.

0:52:320:52:36

Yes. If it's going to be too cold, then you cannot stretch it.

0:52:360:52:40

You cannot work and make it.

0:52:400:52:42

So now she's finished that process,

0:52:420:52:44

I can see the whole family are getting involved.

0:52:440:52:46

What's going on here?

0:52:460:52:48

Actually, we weigh the pastelli,

0:52:480:52:50

because we're going to sell it afterwards.

0:52:500:52:53

It's going to be exactly 100 grams.

0:52:530:52:56

Would you like to try it?

0:52:560:52:58

I'd love to try some.

0:52:580:53:00

You just eat it like this?

0:53:000:53:02

Yes, like this.

0:53:020:53:03

-That's good!

-You like it, huh?

-Mm!

0:53:060:53:09

-It tastes caramel-y.

-Yes.

0:53:090:53:11

Johanna's family also produces syrup made from carob.

0:53:120:53:15

I'm joining them outside to taste it,

0:53:150:53:18

alongside some other local delicacies.

0:53:180:53:21

-As you can see, this is goat's cheese.

-Yes.

-We put the syrup on it.

0:53:210:53:26

You can see here the pastelli.

0:53:260:53:28

-You see? Try. You like it?

-Mm, I do actually, yeah.

0:53:280:53:33

Still chewy.

0:53:330:53:34

This is soft...with the syrup, also. Do you want me to serve you?

0:53:340:53:40

I would love to try some, yes.

0:53:400:53:42

So the carob syrup with local goat's cheese. Is this from the village?

0:53:430:53:47

Yes, from the village. They made it yesterday, actually.

0:53:470:53:50

Did they really?

0:53:500:53:52

Thank you.

0:53:520:53:54

Mm!

0:53:560:53:57

So, how does it taste?

0:53:570:53:58

-Mm.

-It's good?

-It tastes really good.

0:53:580:54:01

Mm. Works well with cheese.

0:54:030:54:05

In Cyprus, when we eat we say, "Kali orexi."

0:54:060:54:09

Kali orexi.

0:54:100:54:12

Kali orexi.

0:54:120:54:13

What does that mean?

0:54:130:54:14

It means bon appetit.

0:54:140:54:15

-Bon appetit.

-Yes.

-Kali orexi.

0:54:150:54:18

THEY LAUGH

0:54:180:54:20

Tasting over, it's time for me to catch up with David and Yola

0:54:230:54:26

back at the mystery house to find out if they've come to any decision.

0:54:260:54:30

Well, we've shown David and Yola our properties here in Cyprus.

0:54:330:54:37

There were times I thought they absolutely loved the house,

0:54:370:54:40

and then a negative crept in.

0:54:400:54:42

So which way are they going to go next?

0:54:420:54:44

I'm not quite sure.

0:54:440:54:45

Let's go an ask them and find out.

0:54:450:54:47

So, the two of you, you've visited this island so many times.

0:54:530:54:57

I've got to start with the Cypriot way of life.

0:54:570:55:00

Is that where your future lies?

0:55:000:55:01

-Without doubt.

-Yes?

-Nothing has changed since I came here, so yes.

0:55:010:55:05

That's wonderful news, because although you know the island so

0:55:050:55:08

well, this was the first time that you'd actually

0:55:080:55:11

looked at properties seriously, wasn't it?

0:55:110:55:14

-It was.

-How do you feel it's gone?

0:55:140:55:16

It's gone very well.

0:55:160:55:17

It's given us an insight to a lot of different types of property.

0:55:170:55:22

If we didn't have the animals, the move would be very, very simple.

0:55:220:55:27

Have you thought that most of the properties don't have that

0:55:270:55:30

much land with them, do they? Certainly not in this region.

0:55:300:55:33

That is a bit of a problem.

0:55:330:55:35

I'm not quite sure how we're going to overcome that.

0:55:350:55:38

How close have we got?

0:55:380:55:39

Cos There were times when I thought, "They love this house,

0:55:390:55:42

"They love this house, they're going to buy it,"

0:55:420:55:44

then suddenly at the last minute, it all came crashing down.

0:55:440:55:47

So did we get close?

0:55:470:55:49

If we didn't have the animals,

0:55:490:55:51

we would have put an offer in on the mystery house.

0:55:510:55:55

Oh! Really?

0:55:550:55:56

It's a beautiful, beautiful traditional village home.

0:55:560:55:59

Absolutely lovely.

0:55:590:56:01

I think the hillside house was the one that really struck me.

0:56:010:56:06

I still have in my mind's eye the ground floor and the view.

0:56:060:56:10

A little concerned about the animals,

0:56:100:56:12

but it did have the space behind to cage them,

0:56:120:56:15

but a little bit worried it's like imprisoning them for ever.

0:56:150:56:19

Yes.

0:56:190:56:20

Any of our houses, are you going to have a second look at any of them?

0:56:200:56:23

Em, yes, I'd like to go and see around the hill house again just

0:56:230:56:27

to get a feel of the location,

0:56:270:56:29

but I need to rethink through a little bit more

0:56:290:56:32

about how the area would work for us, particularly with the animals.

0:56:320:56:35

It had a beautiful outside space, lovely views, superb for astronomy.

0:56:350:56:41

It's just got that hesitation to it.

0:56:430:56:45

Anything you think you might have learned over these last few days?

What our budget can buy out here.

0:56:500:56:53

We've got a budget which is capable of producing the house that we want.

0:56:540:57:00

It's just a question of perhaps looking a little bit further

0:57:000:57:03

and finding the ideal property.

0:57:030:57:05

So if we were going to put a timeframe on your move,

0:57:050:57:09

how quickly do you want to come out here?

0:57:090:57:11

In an ideal world, I'd like to be out here this time next year.

0:57:130:57:15

Well, I'm delighted we've helped you a little bit along the way,

0:57:150:57:19

certainly to steer you in some direction of what you do

0:57:190:57:22

and don't want.

0:57:220:57:23

-But let us know how you get on.

-Will do.

-Will do.

0:57:230:57:25

Thank you both very much indeed. It's been an absolute pleasure.

0:57:250:57:28

Well, thank you very much for helping us round the island

0:57:280:57:32

and producing a few surprises.

0:57:320:57:33

-Thank you. And as we say, efcharisto.

-Efcharisto.

0:57:330:57:37

David and Yola know this island inside out

0:57:410:57:44

and are as committed as ever to starting a new life here.

0:57:440:57:48

Although we got close with two of our properties,

0:57:480:57:51

they've decided to continue the search for that Cypriot home

0:57:510:57:56

in the right locality with the perfect view.

0:57:560:57:59

I really hope it works our for them. See you again.
