Now, 127 years ago, that little hillside village behind me

0:00:020:00:04

was devastated in a terrifying natural disaster.

0:00:040:00:08

It's now one of many "ghost towns" that this country,

0:00:080:00:10

and in particular, this region, is famous for.

0:00:100:00:13

But where are we?

0:00:130:00:15

Well, join me in just a moment and I'll tell you.

0:00:150:00:17

Today's house-hunters are looking to buy a property

0:00:360:00:39

that will be the start of an exciting new adventure.

0:00:390:00:42

THAT is the most amazing bathroom I have ever seen!

0:00:420:00:46

-We get stuck into the lingo...

-It's very "typique". "Typico"?

0:00:460:00:50

THEY LAUGH

0:00:500:00:52

-Love the floor.

-Is "typico" an Italian word?

0:00:520:00:54

-Yeah, I don't know.

-It is now!

0:00:540:00:56

And we discover some welcome surprises.

0:00:560:00:58

-Kelly, what's that?

-It's a lemon tree.

-It certainly is!

0:00:580:01:02

Well, today we are in Liguria, in the north-western corner of Italy.

0:01:060:01:11

And this is the ruined village of Bussana Vecchia.

0:01:110:01:15

A devastating earthquake, back in 1887, left it in ruins.

0:01:150:01:19

And for decades afterwards, this place was left unloved and unlived in.

0:01:190:01:23

But in the 1960s, a community of artists moved in, taking inspiration

0:01:230:01:28

from the ruins and using them as studios and galleries.

0:01:280:01:32

For a town that everybody thought had died, it's now full of life.

0:01:320:01:37

The Italian region of Liguria is around a

0:01:380:01:40

two-hour flight from the UK.

0:01:400:01:42

It's a crescent-shaped region which hugs

0:01:420:01:45

the coastline for around 180 miles, and, as it borders France,

0:01:450:01:49

can be accessed by either Nice or Genoa airports.

0:01:490:01:52

Known as the Italian Riviera, it's split into two coasts.

0:01:530:01:57

The western section is the Riviera Ponente, a sheltered coastal strip

0:01:570:02:01

punctuated by classic Mediterranean resorts such as San Remo.

0:02:010:02:06

It's Italy's answer to Monte Carlo, with a glitzy casino

0:02:060:02:09

and majestic turn-of-the-century hotels.

0:02:090:02:12

Further to the east is the Riviera Levante,

0:02:120:02:15

which has a more rugged coastline descending directly into the sea

0:02:150:02:19

and home to breathtaking towns such as Portofino,

0:02:190:02:22

which clings to the hillside.

0:02:220:02:25

And in the middle of these two shorelines

0:02:250:02:27

is the capital of the region, Genoa.

0:02:270:02:29

Home to just under a million people, it's a busy commercial city

0:02:290:02:33

built around its deep natural harbour,

0:02:330:02:35

which is Italy's largest seaport.

0:02:350:02:38

One of the more recent additions to the marina is "La Bolla",

0:02:380:02:42

or "The Ball", by Genoese architect Renzo Piano,

0:02:420:02:45

who's better known to us for his London building, the Shard.

0:02:450:02:48

But arguably, Genoa's most famous son

0:02:480:02:50

is explorer Christopher Columbus,

0:02:500:02:53

born here in 1451, and who is remembered throughout the city.

0:02:530:02:57

Inland, medieval mountain villages dot the landscape.

0:02:570:03:01

Mind you, getting to them can be slow going,

0:03:010:03:03

but the views are spectacular.

0:03:030:03:05

So how does all that seductive scenery

0:03:110:03:14

translate into Liguria's property market?

0:03:140:03:16

Well, here on the coast, two-bedroom houses can range from

0:03:160:03:20

£390,000-£800,000.

0:03:200:03:22

Prices that are somewhat inflated thanks to wealthy

0:03:220:03:24

Italian city dwellers investing in second homes here.

0:03:240:03:28

So, if you want more for your budget, well, the trick is simple,

0:03:280:03:31

head inland and further up into the mountains.

0:03:310:03:34

There, you could find the same thing for half as much.

0:03:340:03:37

And it's also worth remembering that Italy is still in the grip

0:03:370:03:40

of an economic downturn. Mortgages are hard to find.

0:03:400:03:43

So if you are a cash buyer coming from the UK, well, to be honest,

0:03:430:03:46

the horizon is wide open.

0:03:460:03:48

So, time now to meet today's buyers and find out what's for them.

0:03:480:03:52

Will it be coast, or countryside?

0:03:520:03:55

Today's house-buyers are Michael and Kelly, who live in Cornwall.

0:03:550:04:00

I'm a helicopter pilot, I've always flown,

0:04:000:04:02

been flying for over 40 years and never done anything else.

0:04:020:04:06

I'm a wedding ceremony registrar.

0:04:060:04:10

So I marry people, which is just the most wonderful job.

0:04:100:04:16

And their journey together began when they were teenagers.

0:04:160:04:19

I was still at school, I think Michael had just left school

0:04:190:04:22

and had joined the Navy.

0:04:220:04:24

And his best friend lived opposite my best friend.

0:04:240:04:30

And that's how we met.

0:04:300:04:33

They've lived in the same house since the '80s,

0:04:330:04:35

where they have concentrated on raising a large family.

0:04:350:04:38

We have five children, four girls and one boy.

0:04:380:04:43

Three of the children are actually my late sister's children,

0:04:430:04:46

so it was a difficult time.

0:04:460:04:49

But we're a really great team together.

0:04:490:04:52

We've had a wild time bringing up a big family.

0:04:520:04:56

And now, that stage is moving on, and we're looking for something new.

0:04:560:05:01

And that new thing is starting a new life in Italy,

0:05:010:05:04

where Kelly lived from the age of seven to 13.

0:05:040:05:07

Her family were in Milan for five years, but spent their holidays

0:05:070:05:10

in Liguria, which is where she wants to return to.

0:05:100:05:14

I lived in Italy as a child and I've always hankered to go back

0:05:140:05:20

and whenever we go back and visit, I just love it.

0:05:200:05:24

As a very sociable couple, they're keen to integrate

0:05:240:05:27

into whichever Italian community they move to.

0:05:270:05:30

We do actually want to go somewhere and be part of it.

0:05:300:05:35

Very definitely. I wouldn't want to be living too remotely.

0:05:350:05:38

If you're not a Vespa ride away from a loaf of bread, it's too far for me.

0:05:380:05:43

Whilst Kelly will give up her job,

0:05:430:05:45

Michael will continue to work in the UK, two weeks on and two weeks off.

0:05:450:05:50

-I can commute from that part of Italy...

-So...

0:05:500:05:53

..and for a certain amount of time it'd work.

0:05:530:05:55

And that's another attraction. Its links are very good.

0:05:550:05:59

Kelly will be spending a lot of time on her own, but luckily,

0:05:590:06:02

she can speak some Italian.

0:06:020:06:04

Although my Italian is not brilliant, but then sometimes,

0:06:040:06:08

after I've been there a while, I find myself...

0:06:080:06:11

I just open my mouth and words come out and I think...

0:06:110:06:14

I just kind of roll along with it.

0:06:140:06:16

And they want to be living the "bella vita" as soon as they can.

0:06:170:06:21

It's quite nice to take a leap of faith.

0:06:210:06:25

Because we haven't done that for a while.

0:06:250:06:28

-So, let's go off and have an adventure.

-Certainly.

0:06:280:06:32

We're concentrating our search in the area of Liguria west of Genoa,

0:06:360:06:40

towards the French border, where Kelly came as a child.

0:06:400:06:43

Whilst it holds very happy memories,

0:06:430:06:45

she hasn't actually been back in 40 years.

0:06:450:06:48

Now, I know there are beautiful Italian villages

0:06:480:06:51

they both will love,

0:06:510:06:52

but what about their property requirements?

0:06:520:06:54

I need a few more details.

0:06:540:06:57

Hello, Kelly. Hi, Michael.

0:06:570:06:59

-Very nice to see you guys. Welcome...

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:06:590:07:02

-..to the Italian Riviera.

-Wonderful.

0:07:020:07:05

Now, this is an area that you do actually know quite well, don't you?

0:07:050:07:08

I do. I lived here for a while as a child.

0:07:080:07:10

So I have some very happy memories of this area.

0:07:100:07:13

-And Michael, this is a kind of new endeavour for you?

-Totally.

0:07:130:07:16

I mean, I've never been to this area at all, so it's either going to

0:07:160:07:20

be a huge shock or surprise, but having said that,

0:07:200:07:22

you know, we've travelled a lot in Italy

0:07:220:07:24

and I've a fair idea what we're likely to expect.

0:07:240:07:27

-And so far, beautiful.

-What are your expectations?

0:07:270:07:30

-Because this isn't retirement, is it?

-No. I want to keep working.

0:07:300:07:34

And this is an area I could commute a bit, for a while,

0:07:340:07:37

-until we make the complete move.

-Have you got a helicopter?

-No.

0:07:370:07:40

-LAUGHING:

-No, there you go. That would help the commute, wouldn't it?

0:07:400:07:43

Can you give me an idea of what the spec is?

0:07:430:07:46

What are you looking for in this new home? Kelly?

0:07:460:07:49

I think we need a minimum of two bedrooms, some outside space...

0:07:490:07:55

-I would so love to have a lemon tree!

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:07:550:07:59

-LAUGHING:

-I think that's possible.

-I wouldn't be adverse to an apartment.

0:07:590:08:03

Now, you mentioned bedrooms. What about downstairs space?

0:08:030:08:06

What's your ideal kind of reception area going to look like?

0:08:060:08:09

Something quite open-plan.

0:08:090:08:11

I don't want to end up spending my life in a kitchen

0:08:110:08:15

when everybody else is at the other end of the house

0:08:150:08:18

or outside on the terrace, or something, and I'm inside cooking.

0:08:180:08:22

How much are we going to spend on all this then, Michael?

0:08:220:08:25

£260,000.

0:08:250:08:27

Well, we've got some glorious weather, and, of course,

0:08:270:08:30

-this wonderful coastline to explore.

-Fabulous.

0:08:300:08:33

And 260,000 quid of your hard-earned pennies to spend.

0:08:330:08:37

-Shall we go?

-Yes, please.

-Can't wait.

0:08:370:08:39

With £260,000 to spend, Kelly and Michael are open to any style

0:08:420:08:47

and type of property, but it should have a minimum of two bedrooms

0:08:470:08:50

as well as connected or open-plan kitchen and living spaces.

0:08:500:08:55

To make the most of the climate, they do want outside space and to

0:08:550:08:58

be located in the heart of a lively and authentic Italian village.

0:08:580:09:02

And, if possible, to have a lemon tree.

0:09:020:09:05

And we have an exciting range of properties to show them.

0:09:050:09:08

Some with unique features that, in all my years of house-hunting,

0:09:080:09:11

I have never seen before.

0:09:110:09:13

And, of course, we have the Mystery House, which could give a

0:09:130:09:16

whole new perspective on their wish list for a home.

0:09:160:09:19

During our time here, Kelly and Michael will be staying

0:09:190:09:22

in their own, rented Italian home, which will give them

0:09:220:09:25

a glimpse of what life could be like once they make the move.

0:09:250:09:28

To kick off our Italian adventure, we're going to the

0:09:350:09:38

village of Vallebona, which is just two-and-a-half-miles from the coast.

0:09:380:09:42

It's a beautiful hillside village, centring on

0:09:420:09:45

a classic Italian church with its campanile tower.

0:09:450:09:48

-Have you been here before?

-No, I haven't.

0:09:480:09:51

The village itself offers you everything, as you can see.

0:09:510:09:53

We've got restaurants, you've got a bakery, there's a post office.

0:09:530:09:56

And a nice community of about 1,300 people or so.

0:09:560:09:59

This is absolutely what I had in mind.

0:09:590:10:02

It's perfect.

0:10:020:10:04

-You can hear life going on around us, I mean...

-Yes.

0:10:040:10:06

-..it's clearly a very sociable place, which is nice.

-Exactly right.

0:10:060:10:09

And it's also... I mean, it's exceptionally pretty, as well.

0:10:090:10:12

This is just wonderful. Love it.

0:10:120:10:13

Right. Come on then, let's have a look.

0:10:130:10:16

Dating back to the 14th century, the winding medieval streets were

0:10:170:10:21

designed to keep residents cool in the heat of the summer.

0:10:210:10:23

But they also give an incredible sense of atmosphere.

0:10:230:10:27

Right, then. Here we go.

0:10:270:10:30

-That is what I want you to have a look at.

-Wow!

0:10:300:10:34

-All of it?

-All of it.

0:10:340:10:35

It's raised over four floors, you've got one, two, three, and then

0:10:350:10:39

the fourth is the roof terrace, which of course, you can't see.

0:10:390:10:42

-Fantastic.

-It's sort of tucked away, but it's not isolated. This is good.

0:10:420:10:47

It's wonderful. Love it.

0:10:470:10:48

Let's get you inside and see what you make of it.

0:10:480:10:50

-Great.

-It's another little climb.

0:10:500:10:53

This town house is all about vertical living.

0:10:530:10:57

On street level, there is a cellar.

0:10:570:10:59

Next floor up is a great guest floor with a living-bedroom,

0:10:590:11:02

as well as small bathroom and a little kitchenette

0:11:020:11:05

with its own balcony.

0:11:050:11:07

But it's up on the second floor where Kelly and Michael's

0:11:070:11:09

accommodation really starts.

0:11:090:11:11

Now, this is what is currently set up as the master.

0:11:110:11:16

-Surprising, isn't it?

-It is! It's very surprising.

0:11:160:11:19

-It's not what you'd expect from the outside.

-No.

-I think that's great.

0:11:190:11:23

-It's very "typique". "Typico"?

-Love the floor.

0:11:230:11:26

Is "typico" an Italian word?

0:11:260:11:28

-Yeah, I don't know. LAUGHING:

-It is now!

-It is now.

0:11:280:11:30

-The floor is terrific, isn't it?

-Yeah. Proper.

-Wonderful, I love that.

0:11:300:11:33

I thought, looking from outside, that the rooms

0:11:330:11:35

would be much smaller and much darker. But this is lovely.

0:11:350:11:39

I mean, the thing to bear in mind is that the footprint of it is not huge.

0:11:390:11:43

-No.

-No.

-But it is all stacked up.

-Yeah.

0:11:430:11:45

So the further up we get,

0:11:450:11:47

I think the more living accommodation you'll find.

0:11:470:11:49

-Yes.

-Right.

-Have a look at this.

0:11:490:11:51

Across the landing is a bathroom,

0:11:530:11:55

making this floor a sort of master suite.

0:11:550:11:58

The next level up is the third floor,

0:11:580:12:00

and contains the main reception room.

0:12:000:12:03

Now, they've got this set up as their living room.

0:12:040:12:07

But I suppose, actually, you could reapportion any of these rooms.

0:12:070:12:12

-No, this makes sense, I think.

-Yeah.

-It makes sense for me.

0:12:120:12:14

-This way up.

-Those lovely windows.

-It's really nice, isn't it?

0:12:140:12:18

Absolutely love these floors.

0:12:180:12:21

-Big enough?

-I think so.

-Yes!

-I think so.

0:12:210:12:24

I think these rooms...

0:12:240:12:25

You can do so much with them.

0:12:250:12:27

They are all really substantial.

0:12:270:12:31

Now, it's unusual at this stage in a house tour

0:12:310:12:33

not to have seen the kitchen, so let's do that.

0:12:330:12:35

It is through here, right next to that dining room and living room.

0:12:360:12:40

-There you go.

-Nice.

-Great. I like it.

0:12:400:12:43

The back of the property has this unusual shape, it's not as square

0:12:430:12:46

and as vast as the front.

0:12:460:12:48

Hence, that's why all the bathrooms are at this end on their respective floors.

0:12:480:12:52

And they've slotted in the kitchen as well.

0:12:520:12:55

But there's plenty of worktop space, really great sink.

0:12:550:13:00

And, to be honest,

0:13:000:13:02

I don't expect to spend my time in Italy in the kitchen.

0:13:020:13:05

No, I'd a feeling you might say that. PRESENTER LAUGHS

0:13:050:13:07

I would hope, given the weather,

0:13:070:13:09

-that most of your eating and entertaining...

-Quite.

0:13:090:13:12

-..is going to be up on the roof.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:13:120:13:14

Come and have a look.

0:13:140:13:16

On the top floor is a summer kitchen, where food and drinks

0:13:160:13:19

can be prepared for dining alfresco.

0:13:190:13:22

Finally, Kelly, I know the bit you've been really looking

0:13:220:13:24

forward to, the outside space. This is the roof terrace,

0:13:240:13:27

have a look at the view over here.

0:13:270:13:30

-Oh...

-There you go.

-Yes!

-Yes?

-Wow. I see the sea.

0:13:300:13:34

You can see the sea! And that lovely bell tower

0:13:340:13:37

-and this lovely higgledy-piggledy roof...line.

-Skyline.

0:13:370:13:40

Beautiful, love that. Very nice.

0:13:400:13:42

Now, I'm wondering if this would be a place for your lemon tree?

0:13:420:13:46

Yes, I think I could probably get a lemon tree up here.

0:13:460:13:49

-The only thing is, you've got to carry it up.

-Yeah, that might be a problem!

0:13:490:13:53

Well, let's think about the price then.

0:13:530:13:55

You've got £260,000 to spend,

0:13:550:13:58

where does our lovely town house in Vallebona come?

0:13:580:14:01

I think that's most of the budget. Got to be £240,000-plus.

0:14:010:14:06

I think it would be more like 250.

0:14:060:14:09

This one is quite good news.

0:14:090:14:12

This is all the twos! It's £222,222.

0:14:120:14:17

-Wow.

-That's a surprise. A walk-in house.

-Yeah.

-Yeah!

0:14:190:14:22

-For that money as well.

-Absolutely.

-That's extraordinary.

0:14:220:14:24

You can just walk in here and get on with it.

0:14:240:14:27

-And have fun...

-Doing things.

-..cosmetically tweaking it,

0:14:270:14:30

-without having to worry about anything major.

-Yes.

-Wow.

0:14:300:14:34

Very nice. And in such a lovely spot. Really lovely.

0:14:340:14:37

Right, then. Off you go, go and spend a bit of time.

0:14:370:14:40

In particular, have a look at that ground floor,

0:14:400:14:42

-think about how the guests might enjoy that.

-Yes.

0:14:420:14:45

-Enjoy.

-Thank you.

0:14:450:14:46

And I think I might just enjoy the view a bit more.

0:14:460:14:49

Look at that.

0:14:490:14:51

Priced at £38,000 under their top budget,

0:14:520:14:56

this four-storey town house offers character on every level.

0:14:560:15:00

There are the two bedrooms they asked for,

0:15:000:15:02

a spacious reception room and a small kitchen.

0:15:020:15:06

Up on the top floor is an intimate roof terrace with summer kitchen

0:15:060:15:09

and spectacular views over the village towards the coast.

0:15:090:15:12

I really like this room. I think the shape's fantastic.

0:15:170:15:20

-The vaults?

-Yes.

-Lovely.

-Wonderful.

0:15:200:15:22

This is a second bedroom. You could put bunks there.

0:15:220:15:26

We could get eight people in here.

0:15:260:15:29

I love the village, I think it's great.

0:15:310:15:33

It's exactly what I had in mind. A proper village, a proper community.

0:15:330:15:37

Plenty going on.

0:15:370:15:38

The property is great.

0:15:380:15:41

It's very substantial.

0:15:410:15:43

It's a hell of a good house.

0:15:430:15:44

It's beautiful, I really like it.

0:15:440:15:48

I think, though...

0:15:480:15:50

all those stairs might actually get to me.

0:15:500:15:54

And also, the main thing is that the kitchen

0:15:540:15:58

is too separate from the rest of the house.

0:15:580:16:02

I would still like something that is more open plan.

0:16:020:16:06

I mean, we're picking on things to find things but it's a great house.

0:16:060:16:11

There are towns and there are houses in towns but I think this one,

0:16:110:16:15

-it really is special, isn't it?

-It's fabulous.

0:16:150:16:18

I've been having a little wander around these lanes

0:16:180:16:20

while you've been finishing off looking around, it's just delightful.

0:16:200:16:24

-Is it on your list?

-It's a heck of a start.

-It's a good start, isn't it?

0:16:240:16:27

-It's caused confusion.

-And a great price, let's be honest.

0:16:270:16:31

And a lovely, lovely village.

0:16:310:16:33

Well, I'm pleased with their first day's house-hunting.

0:16:330:16:36

To round things off we're heading to the town of Imperia

0:16:360:16:38

where there's another property to visit. But this one's not for sale.

0:16:380:16:42

We have got you this little place for the next few days

0:16:420:16:45

in which you can relax and really immerse yourself in the local area.

0:16:450:16:49

-What do you think?

-Fantastic.

-Not a bad setting, is it?

-Wonderful.

0:16:490:16:52

Hopefully, it'll rekindle those childhood memories

0:16:520:16:54

-of a life in Italy on the Riviera.

-Absolutely. Wonderful.

0:16:540:16:58

It's yours to enjoy for the next few days,

0:16:580:17:01

somewhere to and unwind and start thinking about what this move

0:17:010:17:04

-is really going to entail for the pair of you.

-Thank you very much.

0:17:040:17:07

Lots to ponder.

0:17:070:17:08

-Oh, Calla. Like the lilies.

-Oh, right.

0:17:100:17:13

Oh! Nice. This is lovely.

0:17:160:17:19

Look at all those windows. Wonderful.

0:17:200:17:23

That's a view.

0:17:230:17:24

-Look. Look, look, look. Look at that. The mountains.

-Fantastic.

0:17:240:17:28

-Wonderful.

-Let's explore.

0:17:280:17:31

Having their own temporary home for the duration of the stay

0:17:330:17:35

will give Kelly and Michael the time and space to reflect on what they see.

0:17:350:17:39

-It's nice to actually be here.

-It's been quite a day.

0:17:410:17:44

-That was quite a day.

-A lot to take in.

-Yes.

0:17:440:17:47

And I did love that village.

0:17:470:17:49

You could compromise a lot for that village because the location was so good.

0:17:490:17:53

Still not sure about the stairs but...

0:17:530:17:55

It was, but that village was perfect.

0:17:550:17:59

And tonight our buyers are off to dinner at a place that holds

0:18:050:18:08

lots of happy memories for Kelly.

0:18:080:18:10

A pizzeria in Imperia.

0:18:100:18:13

-Gosh, this is so weird.

-I feel like I've been here before.

-Yeah.

0:18:130:18:16

After all your descriptions. How's that?

0:18:180:18:20

She and her family regularly dined here

0:18:200:18:23

and its the first time Kelly has been back in 40 years.

0:18:230:18:26

Siamo avere...

0:18:260:18:28

-..un pizza margherita con rucola.

-Rucola.

-Va bene.

0:18:280:18:34

Grazie, grazie.

0:18:340:18:36

Dining on the most famous of Italian dishes

0:18:380:18:40

is still a good value night out.

0:18:400:18:42

Outside of the tourist hot spots,

0:18:420:18:44

a pizza will cost roughly four to seven pounds

0:18:440:18:47

and a bottle of house red is around eight pounds.

0:18:470:18:50

Right, let's go for it.

0:18:500:18:53

I've waited so long.

0:18:530:18:55

Mmm.

0:18:580:18:59

OK.

0:19:020:19:03

That's what pizza is supposed to taste like.

0:19:050:19:08

Being back in their old haunt is an emotional experience for Kelly

0:19:110:19:14

as it reminds her of being here with her parents and sister,

0:19:140:19:17

who have sadly all since passed away.

0:19:170:19:20

I know how this place is incredibly important to you.

0:19:200:19:24

It's not because of the place, it's because of the people

0:19:240:19:27

and because of your family.

0:19:270:19:29

Stop it. I'm not going to look at you now.

0:19:290:19:32

No, I understand. It's really special and it's got nothing to do

0:19:320:19:37

with this pizzeria, it's about why you came and who you came with.

0:19:370:19:41

But it's very... But, yes.

0:19:410:19:42

I've been asking myself for years why I've never been back to

0:19:450:19:51

this particular place and why it's never happened.

0:19:510:19:54

I think, actually, I was always, kind of, too...

0:19:540:19:57

It was such a big deal to do it.

0:19:590:20:02

It's just so lovely. Absolutely lovely.

0:20:020:20:06

-Buonasera.

-Arriverderci.

0:20:060:20:09

Connecting with past memories while starting a fresh chapter

0:20:090:20:12

is what being here is all about.

0:20:120:20:14

Hopefully, tomorrow we will have some properties which will get

0:20:140:20:18

Kelly and Michael closer to turning those recollections into a reality.

0:20:180:20:22

We're waking up on the second day of our search for a new home

0:20:310:20:34

in the Italian region of Liguria for Kelly and Michael from Cornwall.

0:20:340:20:39

After spending her childhood in the region, it's been Kelly's dream

0:20:390:20:42

to live here and this trip is a chance for Michael to discover

0:20:420:20:45

if it's a move that's right for him too.

0:20:450:20:47

So far, it's clear they love the idea of living in a classic

0:20:510:20:54

Italian community but they do want a little more space,

0:20:540:20:58

in particular for Kelly, something a lot more open plan.

0:20:580:21:01

That's exactly what our second property is going to offer them.

0:21:010:21:04

I can't wait to show them this one.

0:21:040:21:06

For our next property we're heading inland to Pieve di Teco

0:21:120:21:15

which is 14 miles from the coast.

0:21:150:21:18

Surrounded by mountains, the medieval village has narrow streets

0:21:180:21:21

and commercial arcades dating back to the 1400s.

0:21:210:21:25

The 13th century church of Madonna della Ripa

0:21:260:21:29

is now a museum of sacred art

0:21:290:21:31

and the tiny Teatro Salvini is one of the smallest theatres in the world.

0:21:310:21:36

It has a population of around 1,000 and our next property

0:21:360:21:39

is located right in the historic centre.

0:21:390:21:42

Rights, guys, just settle down here and look up there.

0:21:450:21:48

-Wow.

-I thought yesterday was really interesting.

0:21:490:21:52

You responded really nicely to the idea of being within

0:21:520:21:55

that old medieval town but it didn't offer you that open plan living

0:21:550:21:58

I know you're very keen on.

0:21:580:21:59

So this one, I think, might do the trick.

0:21:590:22:02

Size is what this one is all about.

0:22:020:22:06

-I think town's lovely.

-The town, from what we've seen, is fantastic.

-Really nice.

0:22:060:22:10

-Come on, let's have look.

-Great.

0:22:100:22:12

'The property is above an antique shop

0:22:120:22:15

'but it's only open one Sunday a month.

0:22:150:22:17

'Inside the house itself, the first floor is the guest floor

0:22:170:22:20

'with two good-sized bedrooms for visitors.

0:22:200:22:23

'Up on another level, there is a third guest bedroom

0:22:230:22:26

'and then a rather unique bedroom for Michael and Kelly

0:22:260:22:29

'as it has a spectacular original fresco.'

0:22:290:22:32

SHE LAUGHS

0:22:340:22:36

Oh, wow. That's extraordinary.

0:22:360:22:38

No surprise, this is the master bedroom.

0:22:400:22:42

Arguably the most ornate of the four.

0:22:440:22:47

The building itself, we think, began life around about 1200.

0:22:470:22:51

It's thought these date from the 18th century.

0:22:510:22:55

-Fabulous.

-That's wonderful.

0:22:550:22:57

It's wonderful the way they pick out the lines of the vaulting.

0:22:570:23:00

-Yes.

-It's not oppressive, it's not like a museum.

0:23:000:23:04

-That's just stunning.

-Yes.

0:23:040:23:05

Frankly, I'm lost for words.

0:23:070:23:10

If you like this, come upstairs.

0:23:100:23:13

-Right.

-This is great fun.

0:23:130:23:15

'There is a small shower room across the hallway but the main bathroom

0:23:150:23:18

'is up on the next floor and believe you me, it's different.'

0:23:180:23:22

Come on in.

0:23:220:23:23

-OK.

-That is the most amazing bathroom I have ever seen.

0:23:260:23:31

Yes. It's very, very different.

0:23:310:23:34

You've got his and hers sinks over there,

0:23:340:23:36

obviously the bath dominates the whole thing.

0:23:360:23:38

These skylights go up to the roof terrace above, actually.

0:23:380:23:42

You want to be slightly careful as to who's up there

0:23:430:23:46

while you're in the bath! It's just part of the fun of it.

0:23:460:23:48

That's incredible.

0:23:480:23:50

This you will enjoy, Michael.

0:23:500:23:52

I think every home should have one of those.

0:23:520:23:55

A genuine pissoir.

0:23:560:23:58

-It is indeed.

-That's fun. It is great fun.

0:23:580:24:02

What do you think, Kelly?

0:24:020:24:04

Like I said before, speechless, actually.

0:24:040:24:07

I've never seen anything quite like it. Seriously wacky.

0:24:070:24:10

-It's selling it to me.

-It's selling it to you?

-I just love it, absolutely love it.

0:24:110:24:15

This house is fun and individual.

0:24:160:24:19

Michael is enjoying its oddities but I'm not so sure about Kelly.

0:24:190:24:22

However, the living spaces, which were almost entirely

0:24:220:24:26

rebuilt in 2002, are where this house delivers on her criteria.

0:24:260:24:30

This is where the open plan element to this property

0:24:310:24:34

really starts to come into its own. This is your living room.

0:24:340:24:37

Fabulous.

0:24:370:24:39

That's an amazing space.

0:24:390:24:42

Beautiful.

0:24:420:24:43

It's just huge. It would take a lifetime to fill all this space.

0:24:450:24:49

-Absolutely incredible.

-Wonderful.

0:24:490:24:52

-Lovely.

-Would you be happy here?

0:24:520:24:54

Yeah, I think so. From what I've seen.

0:24:540:24:56

I think I might get a bit lost, to be honest.

0:24:560:24:59

And we haven't finished yet. There's one more floor to go.

0:24:590:25:02

'Now, Kelly wanted a kitchen connected to both outdoor

0:25:020:25:05

'and family living spaces and up here, there is just that.

0:25:050:25:09

'In one direction, the kitchen area with the stove and sink

0:25:090:25:12

'looks out onto the property's outdoor space - a compact terrace.

0:25:120:25:16

'And then in the other direction...'

0:25:160:25:18

This is what they've currently got set up as their dining area.

0:25:180:25:21

-Right. You can get lots of people in here.

-Absolutely.

0:25:230:25:26

It's a really interesting space.

0:25:260:25:30

-It's got this city loft appeal...

-Yes.

-Yes.

-..actually.

0:25:300:25:34

-Are you still lost for words?

-I am. I am.

0:25:340:25:37

Clearly, they are gastronauts.

0:25:370:25:40

They do take their salami slicing quite seriously,

0:25:400:25:42

as you can probably tell.

0:25:420:25:44

My brain is going overtime calculating the cost of this.

0:25:440:25:48

I'm quite confused.

0:25:480:25:49

Well, let's deal with the cost now, shall we?

0:25:490:25:52

Logically, this is all the budget and a bit more.

0:25:520:25:55

I'm saying...£270,000.

0:25:550:25:59

I think I'm with you on that.

0:26:010:26:03

OK, I'm going to take you back to school.

0:26:030:26:05

Here are the numbers you need to think about.

0:26:050:26:09

You said 270 plus. OK.

0:26:090:26:11

-It's a good start.

-Good start?

0:26:150:26:17

-I'll have a five.

-Oh!

0:26:190:26:21

-Wow.

-Pounds.

-Yes.

0:26:230:26:26

-Could you do it?

-Maybe.

0:26:270:26:29

-Are you happy?

-Yes.

-I know it's a bit of a stretch but not bad really.

0:26:300:26:35

-That's extraordinary.

-It's a lot of house.

0:26:350:26:38

Go and consider it carefully.

0:26:380:26:40

Have a look at the terrace out there

0:26:400:26:42

and I will catch up with you a little bit later outside.

0:26:420:26:45

Off you go. See if you can find a place for that lemon tree.

0:26:450:26:49

For just a nudge over their £260,000 budget,

0:26:490:26:54

this extensive renovated town house is a one-off

0:26:540:26:57

full of character and fun.

0:26:570:26:59

There are four bedrooms, a unique bathroom

0:26:590:27:01

and two floors of large well-connected living spaces.

0:27:010:27:05

There's also a small outside terrace and it's located in a lively town.

0:27:050:27:09

Right, not exactly wide-open spaces but...

0:27:100:27:16

But it's outside space and it's attached to the kitchen, which is important.

0:27:160:27:20

The style of the property is very interesting.

0:27:200:27:25

But it's so big, I would feel lost in it.

0:27:260:27:30

Yes, you could fill it with all family and friends,

0:27:300:27:34

everybody could fit in here

0:27:340:27:36

but when they weren't here, I think I could feel rather lonely in it.

0:27:360:27:43

The style of the house is great, I love it.

0:27:430:27:45

Clearly, they have spent a lot of money and done this properly.

0:27:450:27:51

As far as the price is concerned, I mean, I think it's a bargain

0:27:510:27:54

but you shouldn't buy a place just because it's a bargain if it's not right.

0:27:540:27:57

Well, how are we doing, Kelly?

0:27:570:28:00

-Good.

-Yeah, good. Michael?

-I loved it.

0:28:010:28:04

I know you did. You're not so sure, are you?

0:28:040:28:07

No, I don't think I'm so sure.

0:28:070:28:09

I'm amazed, I loved it, I have to confess.

0:28:090:28:12

But maybe now is the time to take a break from house-hunting.

0:28:120:28:16

-Fancy a little walk for some fresh air?

-Yes.

-Come on.

0:28:160:28:19

When Kelly and Michael make the move to Italy

0:28:270:28:29

they are determined to make the most of the outdoors.

0:28:290:28:32

As this part of Liguria is sheltered from cold northerly winds

0:28:320:28:35

by the high mountain range of the Ligurian Alps,

0:28:350:28:38

it has a temperate climate all year round.

0:28:380:28:41

Summer temperatures reach the high 20s

0:28:410:28:43

and in winter, the mercury rarely drops below five Celsius.

0:28:430:28:47

'To get to know the area and find out more about life here,

0:28:470:28:51

'we've arranged for Kelly and Michael to meet British expat, Lorenzo.'

0:28:510:28:54

-Nice to see you.

-Pleased to meet you.

0:28:540:28:57

'Born in the UK to Italian parents, he, like Kelly,

0:28:570:29:00

'spent some of his childhood in Liguria.

0:29:000:29:03

'Ten years ago he left the UK, moved here permanently

0:29:030:29:06

'and now runs a walking tour company.'

0:29:060:29:09

-Welcome to Liguria.

-Thank you.

0:29:090:29:12

Well, I think a visit to this part of Liguria

0:29:120:29:14

will cement your love for it. That's the idea.

0:29:140:29:17

We've got a fantastic guide here in Lorenzo.

0:29:170:29:19

You probably know these mountains like the back of your hand.

0:29:190:29:23

Pretty much. It's the love for these mountains, for this interior,

0:29:230:29:25

that brought me back here.

0:29:250:29:27

This quality of light that you see today, and the sheer beauty

0:29:270:29:30

and biodiversity, where you only look up there

0:29:300:29:33

and you can see the autumn colours changing already.

0:29:330:29:36

-The eyes are never tired, it's just spectacular.

-How about that?

0:29:360:29:40

The eyes are never tired. I'm hooked already.

0:29:400:29:42

THEY LAUGH

0:29:420:29:44

It's so close to the sky, it feels you're really up there. Wonderful.

0:29:440:29:48

We haven't got all day, sadly, but we've got some time for you

0:29:480:29:52

to give us a real taste of what these mountains are all about.

0:29:520:29:56

Just follow me, I've got a great treat in store for you.

0:29:560:29:59

-Go on, then, after you.

-Thank you.

0:29:590:30:01

In the foothills of the Alps, we are

0:30:030:30:05

hiking along the old mule tracks to the village of Mendatica.

0:30:050:30:09

The buildings here date back to the 15th century

0:30:090:30:11

and include the church of St Margaret.

0:30:110:30:14

Lovely. Love that door.

0:30:140:30:16

-Oh, proper squeaky church door, isn't it?

-Yes.

0:30:160:30:19

So these are the wonderful frescoes, executed by

0:30:200:30:23

Guido da Ranzo, a local artist, who was influenced

0:30:230:30:27

by the Tuscan school of art,

0:30:270:30:29

but the amazing thing about this particular fresco here...

0:30:290:30:33

is of the Last Supper. We see many Last Suppers in Italy,

0:30:330:30:37

but this depicts dishes of this area, which they

0:30:370:30:40

still put in the restaurants of the area.

0:30:400:30:44

Well, all this talk of food, and our walk,

0:30:440:30:46

-has built up my appetite, I don't know about you two, are you hungry?

-Yes.

0:30:460:30:49

Well, I've just got the right sort of place where we can go

0:30:490:30:52

and really enjoy authentic food.

0:30:520:30:54

Oh, come on, off you go.

0:30:540:30:56

HE LAUGHS

0:30:560:30:57

Culture and lunch.

0:30:570:30:59

The local mountain cuisine is known as Cucina Bianca, or

0:31:000:31:04

"White Cuisine", because of its pale colour.

0:31:040:31:06

Using mountain ingredients, such as mushrooms, potatoes,

0:31:060:31:10

sheep and goat's cheese, as well as salami and bread, it's simple.

0:31:100:31:13

The food is very different from the coastline,

0:31:160:31:18

where you have fish and a variety of exotic fruits.

0:31:180:31:23

Whereas here it is more akin to northern Europe.

0:31:230:31:26

-And these are?

-Turle.

0:31:260:31:28

Made with a pastry of potato and mint inside.

0:31:280:31:31

-Oh, go on.

-Fabulous.

0:31:310:31:33

One of the delicacies of the area, but simple food, very poor food.

0:31:330:31:37

Does this remind you of your youth here?

0:31:370:31:40

It absolutely does, and I have been looking forward to

0:31:400:31:43

food like this for the last 40 years.

0:31:430:31:47

I thought you were going to say 40 minutes.

0:31:470:31:49

40 years. There we are. Look, tuck in, guys.

0:31:490:31:53

Lorenzo, did you find it hard to

0:31:530:31:56

adjust to life back here?

0:31:560:31:58

I remember when I arrived, and some Italian friends said,

0:31:580:32:01

"Well, welcome back, after 30 years, to Liguria."

0:32:010:32:04

And they gave me a booklet. And the booklet reads, "The Ligurians...

0:32:040:32:07

"the grumpy ones."

0:32:070:32:09

THEY LAUGH

0:32:090:32:10

I knew the nature of the people, which is quite reserved.

0:32:100:32:14

People are quite shy in this area.

0:32:140:32:16

At times they can look surly, but they are not.

0:32:160:32:19

Once they know who you are, where you come from,

0:32:190:32:22

they open out their hearts to you.

0:32:220:32:24

One thing I would be interested in, Lorenzo, the cost of living.

0:32:240:32:27

Is it very high?

0:32:270:32:29

There is an incredible difference in cost of living,

0:32:290:32:33

depending, in Liguria, where you are.

0:32:330:32:35

The more you move inland, although you have more authenticity,

0:32:350:32:39

the prices drop considerably down.

0:32:390:32:42

So, actually, it's a kind of inverse graph, isn't it?

0:32:420:32:45

You get more lifestyle, more Italy, if you will,

0:32:450:32:49

the further inland you come. But actually it costs you less.

0:32:490:32:52

-Much less.

-So is there anything that you miss?

-Well, I have a business.

0:32:520:32:57

I think running a business in England, for example,

0:32:570:33:00

is much easier.

0:33:000:33:01

There's a lot more red tape here, without a shadow of a doubt. But...

0:33:010:33:05

you reach a certain stage and age in your life

0:33:050:33:08

and other values are more important.

0:33:080:33:11

Your surroundings, family values,

0:33:110:33:13

and for me it was just coming back home, so it was the right decision.

0:33:130:33:17

I think that's rather similar, in a way, to what you are trying to do,

0:33:170:33:20

because you are sort of recapturing,

0:33:200:33:22

retracing the steps of your youth, aren't you?

0:33:220:33:24

Yes, yes, there's definitely that element to it.

0:33:240:33:27

-Lorenzo, thank you very much for your time.

-Thank you.

0:33:270:33:30

-Cheers.

-Salute.

-Salute!

-Salute!

0:33:300:33:32

-Or chin-chin.

-Chin-chin.

-Chin-chin.

0:33:320:33:36

Moving to Italy brings with it particular financial

0:33:360:33:39

and logistical considerations.

0:33:390:33:41

In terms of the property purchase, 8% of the price is the amount you

0:33:410:33:45

should expect to pay in solicitors' cost, stamp duty and agents.

0:33:450:33:50

Spending more than 183 days a year in Italy qualifies

0:33:500:33:53

you as an Italian tax resident, even if you work and pay tax in the UK.

0:33:530:33:58

The system is complicated, and getting professional

0:33:580:34:01

advice about your status before a move is advisable.

0:34:010:34:04

One of the best ways to integrate is to find a local language

0:34:040:34:08

exchange group. Made up of English speakers wanting to

0:34:080:34:11

better their Italian, and Italians wanting to improve their English,

0:34:110:34:14

they have regular socials to brush up on language skills...

0:34:140:34:17

and, of course, make friends.

0:34:170:34:19

It's the start of our final day house-hunting in the Italian

0:34:260:34:29

region of Liguria, and we've still got plenty to see.

0:34:290:34:33

With a budget of £260,000, Kelly and Michael from Cornwall plan to begin

0:34:330:34:38

a new chapter in their lives, but only once they've found the right property.

0:34:380:34:42

This whole process is just short-cutting so much for us.

0:34:420:34:47

Well, it focuses the mind as to actually what it is you do want.

0:34:470:34:50

-Yeah.

-I've realised I don't want that

0:34:500:34:54

-classic town house...

-Yeah.

0:34:540:34:56

..thing of one room on top of another.

0:34:560:34:59

The other thing is, dare I say it,

0:34:590:35:01

to look at an apartment with a big balcony.

0:35:010:35:04

Normally by this stage, I've got a pretty good

0:35:060:35:08

idea of what our buyers are after, but on this occasion I'm finding

0:35:080:35:13

it very hard to read, in particular

0:35:130:35:15

what is going on in Kelly's mind.

0:35:150:35:18

Michael is really enthusiastic about this move,

0:35:180:35:20

he is supporting her and her wish to get back to a place

0:35:200:35:23

she remembers fondly from her childhood,

0:35:230:35:26

but so far nothing really has caused a wow.

0:35:260:35:30

So it's all to play for today,

0:35:300:35:31

we've got two more properties to come, including our Mystery House,

0:35:310:35:35

so hopefully, by the end of play,

0:35:350:35:37

we may at last find out what exactly Kelly is after.

0:35:370:35:40

For our next offering we are going to the city of Albenga,

0:35:440:35:47

which is right on the coast.

0:35:470:35:49

It's a busy place of just under 25,000 people,

0:35:490:35:52

who populate the cafes, bars and piazzas of the old town.

0:35:520:35:56

It's just the sort of sociable place I think our buyers would like.

0:35:570:36:01

It's also an important historical town with magnificent

0:36:010:36:05

buildings such as the Cathedral of St Michael the Archangel.

0:36:050:36:09

The city's popular with tourists, who flock to the string of small

0:36:090:36:12

public beaches linked by a two-mile promenade.

0:36:120:36:15

What we've got for you is something slightly different.

0:36:190:36:22

We've had lots of stairs,

0:36:220:36:24

so what we've gone for is a single-storey apartment.

0:36:240:36:27

-Right.

-Interesting.

-Come and have a look.

0:36:270:36:30

The apartment is on the first floor of a palazzo,

0:36:330:36:36

built in the 1500s by the Del Carretto family,

0:36:360:36:39

who were important local nobility.

0:36:390:36:41

Now, the stairs widen considerably

0:36:410:36:43

when you get up to your floor.

0:36:430:36:46

And the reason for that is sort of simple, really.

0:36:460:36:50

The whole thing was built as quite a lavish town house

0:36:500:36:52

in the 16th century by the Marques Carretto.

0:36:520:36:56

But the story is, they say,

0:36:560:36:59

that he had the stairs widened

0:36:590:37:01

-so he could get his horse up here.

-KELLY LAUGHS

0:37:010:37:03

-Great style.

-Slightly bonkers, maybe.

0:37:030:37:05

The good news is there is also a lift today,

0:37:050:37:08

and this is no longer some sort of stable.

0:37:080:37:11

Come and have a look.

0:37:110:37:12

-There we are.

-Oh!

0:37:150:37:18

-Yes?

-Yes.

0:37:180:37:21

Oh, very nice.

0:37:210:37:22

I do really like this, I think it's got a very nice feel to it.

0:37:220:37:27

I think he's as surprised as I am.

0:37:270:37:29

THEY LAUGH

0:37:290:37:31

-No, but it's...

-But I can see why.

0:37:310:37:34

It feels like it's got space, but it's not...

0:37:340:37:38

massive, it's not huge, and you could get plenty of people in here.

0:37:380:37:42

But also it would be fine if I was here on my own.

0:37:420:37:45

-You're not going to rattle around on your own.

-No.

-No.

0:37:450:37:47

This has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

0:37:470:37:50

The master is through here.

0:37:500:37:52

Of the two bedrooms there is a smaller one, which has high

0:37:550:37:57

vaulted ceilings, a mezzanine section for storage

0:37:570:38:00

and an en suite bathroom.

0:38:000:38:02

Next door is a large family bathroom,

0:38:030:38:05

and on the other side of that is the bigger of the two bedrooms.

0:38:050:38:09

There you are.

0:38:090:38:11

Oh, wow.

0:38:110:38:13

That's a big window.

0:38:130:38:16

And a lot of storage. Goodness.

0:38:160:38:19

Serious storage. For an apartment.

0:38:190:38:21

It is essential, actually, to have a big whack of storage somewhere.

0:38:210:38:25

You've also got this mezzanine arrangement. Not full head height up there,

0:38:250:38:28

but, I don't know, a bit more storage.

0:38:280:38:31

What occurs to me with the family coming, two beds up there.

0:38:310:38:34

You could do. We are brokering this as the master bedroom.

0:38:340:38:37

However, next door does have an en suite,

0:38:370:38:40

so they are interchangeable.

0:38:400:38:42

So if you wanted this to have a bit more bed space... The family dorm.

0:38:420:38:46

-Absolutely.

-Yes.

-They'd be cool with that.

0:38:460:38:49

-They're all used...

-And they would really enjoy it.

0:38:490:38:52

-They'd be fine.

-They have been doing it half their life. HE LAUGHS

0:38:520:38:55

So with a bit of ingenuity,

0:38:550:38:56

this two bedroom apartment could accommodate plenty of guests,

0:38:560:39:00

whilst not being too big a space for Kelly when she's on her own.

0:39:000:39:04

This is going very well but, as I know, it's the kitchen

0:39:040:39:08

and outside space that will swing any decision.

0:39:080:39:11

It's nice, isn't it? Nice mix of the contemporary. And...

0:39:110:39:15

I absolutely love that ceiling. I think that's great.

0:39:150:39:19

Because some ornate ceilings can be a bit OTT and oppressive,

0:39:190:39:22

but that feels modern, even though it's original.

0:39:220:39:25

And I really like the way they've laid it out.

0:39:270:39:30

-Very nice.

-I agree.

0:39:300:39:32

Let's deal with the outside space, it's right here.

0:39:320:39:35

-Proper outside space.

-That's a proper terrace.

0:39:370:39:40

-Now you're flowing out the kitchen.

-Yeah.

0:39:400:39:43

Everything you talked about in your outdoor living.

0:39:430:39:46

-Yeah. Very much what I like.

-I think you're absolutely right.

0:39:460:39:49

You would spend a huge amount of time out here.

0:39:490:39:51

-You really could use this as another room.

-Yes, most definitely.

0:39:510:39:55

-Mmm. I like it.

-I'm very happily surprised, the size of this.

0:39:550:40:00

So let's think about the price, then.

0:40:000:40:02

Well, I think I've been way overestimating things.

0:40:020:40:06

I'm going to say...

0:40:070:40:09

-230.

-I'd love to think it's going to be about that,

0:40:090:40:12

I was thinking slightly less, but I'm going to be safe and say 230.

0:40:120:40:16

-230, say the pair of you?

-Yes.

-I wish it were.

0:40:160:40:19

-Oh.

-THEY LAUGH

0:40:190:40:21

-Ah!

-But it's good news.

0:40:210:40:23

It is actually under budget, it's on at £258,000.

0:40:230:40:27

-Just creeping in there.

-Right, then.

0:40:270:40:30

There's not much more to see, to be honest. Have a wander around and

0:40:300:40:33

-make sure you've got the geography of it firmly implanted in your minds.

-Right.

0:40:330:40:36

I'll see you later.

0:40:360:40:38

There we are. Well, that little look around won't take very long, I suspect,

0:40:390:40:42

but it's well worth trying to memorise every little detail of these

0:40:420:40:45

properties because, at the end of the day, this is a big decision to

0:40:450:40:48

make, it is a lot of money to spend, but maybe

0:40:480:40:51

they'll spend it here.

0:40:510:40:53

So, for just £2,000 under budget,

0:40:540:40:56

this historic apartment gives two bedrooms which, thanks to

0:40:560:40:59

a mezzanine area, would accommodate plenty of visiting family.

0:40:590:41:02

It has a living room which is well connected to the kitchen,

0:41:020:41:05

which opens out onto the all-important terrace.

0:41:050:41:08

And it's in a buzzing little town on the coast.

0:41:080:41:10

Oh.

0:41:130:41:14

Right, interesting.

0:41:140:41:17

-Right.

-Bathroom.

-This is the en suite.

0:41:170:41:19

Well, having seen the other, I'm thinking even more now this could be a room for us.

0:41:190:41:23

-OK, it's quite pink.

-A couple of pots of paint.

-Could change that.

0:41:230:41:28

I was really hoping you would show us an apartment,

0:41:280:41:30

because we did have an open mind about the sort of property.

0:41:300:41:34

And having seen it, I'm really surprised how it does...

0:41:340:41:38

address a lot of our needs.

0:41:380:41:40

As apartments go, it's got the high ceilings, but it's not too

0:41:400:41:45

cold, but it's still got the right flow of the

0:41:450:41:48

indoor and outdoor space.

0:41:480:41:51

I think, so far, this is the best.

0:41:510:41:54

Definitely. I could see myself here.

0:41:540:41:58

Realistically, actually this could make a really good home.

0:41:590:42:03

I love the way the kitchen just comes straight out onto the terrace.

0:42:040:42:08

-A couple of doors wide open.

-Which is what you need.

0:42:080:42:10

-Exactly what I wanted, yes.

-Oh!

0:42:100:42:14

Is there a sense of happiness and agreement?

0:42:140:42:16

Yes, I think there is. Yes.

0:42:160:42:19

I think this is a really strong contender, I really do.

0:42:190:42:23

Albenga, I adore.

0:42:230:42:25

This so far is probably my favourite. There you are...

0:42:250:42:28

-Certainly mine.

-Good.

0:42:280:42:31

But it's not over yet, we've got two more treats for you...this afternoon.

0:42:310:42:34

-The first is lunch.

-Excellent.

-And the second

0:42:340:42:37

-is our Mystery House.

-Mmm.

-Right.

0:42:370:42:39

-Shall we?

-Yes.

0:42:390:42:40

For our final Mystery House, we're going back

0:42:480:42:50

up into the mountains to the tiny village of Vellego.

0:42:500:42:54

It's 25 minutes from the nearest lively town, with only 60 residents.

0:42:540:42:58

There are no shops, but there is a restaurant which forms the social heart.

0:42:580:43:03

And a few minutes out of the village, and set on its own,

0:43:030:43:05

is our final offering.

0:43:050:43:07

Come on down these few steps. There we are, guys.

0:43:090:43:12

That is our Mystery House.

0:43:120:43:14

-Mmm!

-We've gone for something a little more rural.

-Completely different.

0:43:140:43:18

Very rural.

0:43:180:43:19

It has this fantastic wraparound veranda-cum-balcony,

0:43:190:43:23

which absolutely milks those views over to the village.

0:43:230:43:27

-Stunning, absolutely stunning.

-Right, let's see what you think.

0:43:270:43:31

Let's have a look.

0:43:310:43:32

What the Mystery House offers is a property with some garden,

0:43:330:43:36

which I feel Kelly is hankering after,

0:43:360:43:38

but to get this, it is located outside of a community.

0:43:380:43:42

There.

0:43:420:43:44

-KELLY LAUGHS

-Very typical.

0:43:450:43:47

These lovely windows, that really make the best of that view,

0:43:470:43:50

of course. And of course the dining space as well,

0:43:500:43:52

-so it is very simple, it is quite spartan.

-It's a room.

0:43:520:43:55

SHE LAUGHS

0:43:550:43:57

-Is it a nice room?

-Potentially.

-I think potentially it is, yes.

0:43:570:44:02

-It's all about...

-Yes.

0:44:020:44:03

And I wanted open-plan,

0:44:030:44:05

and you've got the doors that open

0:44:050:44:08

straight out, so, yes.

0:44:080:44:10

It does need a bit of imagination, I think, but it is all kind of here.

0:44:100:44:14

This is the kitchen. There you go.

0:44:140:44:16

-Nice view out there.

-It's nice.

0:44:180:44:21

These doors all lead on to this balcony that wraps

0:44:210:44:24

itself around the property, which is stunning.

0:44:240:44:27

To be honest, I'd take a sledgehammer to that wall,

0:44:270:44:30

open it out completely and just turn it into one big room.

0:44:300:44:34

That's the spirit.

0:44:340:44:35

Imagination. That's what I asked for and that's what you're giving me.

0:44:350:44:38

I think that was a royal I, referring to the sledgehammer.

0:44:380:44:41

That's you, is it?

0:44:410:44:42

THEY LAUGH

0:44:420:44:44

But, yes, I agree completely. It would be fabulous.

0:44:440:44:47

Let's have a quick look at the bedroom here.

0:44:470:44:50

The main house is all on one level.

0:44:510:44:53

There is a bathroom, which serves the two bedrooms,

0:44:530:44:56

the smaller of which could be a guest room.

0:44:560:44:59

So this is by far the biggest of the two.

0:44:590:45:02

-Oh.

-It's probably twice as big as what is next door, to be honest.

-Right.

0:45:020:45:06

-Hence this, we think, would be the master.

-Yes.

0:45:060:45:10

-Oh, what an aspect.

-Yes, it is all about that, isn't it?

0:45:100:45:14

Just listen.

0:45:140:45:15

BIRDS TWEET

0:45:150:45:18

-It's just the birds.

-Fabulous.

0:45:180:45:20

I mean, I think this room makes it for me, to be perfectly honest.

0:45:200:45:22

-The idea of waking up with that to greet me.

-Yeah.

0:45:220:45:25

This is what I had in mind.

0:45:270:45:29

Does it hark back to what you remember as a child?

0:45:290:45:32

Yes, the simple tile floors,

0:45:320:45:34

big windows, opening out, sunshine.

0:45:340:45:37

Below the house is an annexe with a large bedroom and bathroom.

0:45:390:45:42

There is also an outdoor terrace area, which is

0:45:420:45:45

part constructed and would need a bit of finishing off, but it's the

0:45:450:45:48

outside area attached to the main house which I think

0:45:480:45:51

is the real draw here.

0:45:510:45:53

-There.

-Wow.

-It's what it's all about.

0:45:530:45:57

-It really is, isn't it?

-That's amazing.

0:45:570:45:59

There's Vellego. Look at the little bell tower over there.

0:45:590:46:02

-BELL RINGS

-Oh!

-Right on cue.

-On cue.

0:46:020:46:04

You know, if we tried to do that, it wouldn't have happened.

0:46:040:46:08

-Kelly, what's that?

-It's a lemon tree.

0:46:080:46:11

-It certainly is.

-THEY LAUGH

0:46:110:46:13

-And it's got a lot of lemons on it.

-Happy?

-Yes.

0:46:130:46:16

Yeah. See, that's another reason why we picked this as the Mystery House.

0:46:160:46:19

The plot size itself is really defined by that fence that is

0:46:190:46:22

right below us.

0:46:220:46:23

Although a bit more of this land is available if you would want it.

0:46:230:46:26

So have you got any thoughts on price at this moment?

0:46:260:46:30

-Say 180.

-200, to be more realistic.

0:46:300:46:33

-200.

-It's a lot of house.

-You're not far off, guys.

0:46:330:46:36

It is on the market for just under, it is £197,000.

0:46:360:46:41

We've explored up here, go and have a good old look down there.

0:46:410:46:44

-And I will come and find you later on.

-Thank you.

0:46:440:46:47

-Right, go that way.

-Thank you.

0:46:470:46:50

So, for £63,000 under budget,

0:46:530:46:56

this hillside rural retreat has

0:46:560:46:58

two bedrooms in the main house plus a one-bedroom guest annexe.

0:46:580:47:01

It is simple and open-plan

0:47:010:47:03

and has spectacular views out across the mountains.

0:47:030:47:06

It's got its own strip of garden with a lemon tree,

0:47:060:47:08

but the sacrifice is not being located in a village community.

0:47:080:47:12

Lemon tree.

0:47:120:47:13

Covered in lemons.

0:47:140:47:16

-It's not ripe yet.

-Smell that. Smell that.

0:47:170:47:19

-Oh...

-Fabulous.

-..wonderful!

-Absolutely...

-Wonderful. And an olive tree.

0:47:190:47:24

The house, I think, is absolutely typical, great Italian property.

0:47:240:47:26

The style, I love, the big veranda and the windows.

0:47:260:47:30

Great price.

0:47:300:47:31

HE SIGHS Private helicopter, whizz down town, great.

0:47:320:47:35

But, in the real world, it's...it's a dilemma.

0:47:350:47:39

It's the most amazing location, it's like Shangri-La.

0:47:390:47:43

Hidden away, but it's very remote.

0:47:430:47:46

I want to pick it up and just move it

0:47:460:47:49

20km down the mountain.

0:47:490:47:51

What a view to finish our series of

0:47:530:47:56

-Ligurian house tours with.

-Amazing.

0:47:560:47:58

I always hoped we'd see something like that on this trip,

0:47:580:48:02

and I haven't been disappointed.

0:48:020:48:04

And I think we've given you some really good options to think about.

0:48:040:48:07

I think you have.

0:48:070:48:09

Have we tempted you enough to buy one? Who knows?

0:48:090:48:12

-You've got lots to think about.

-We have.

-Should we go?

-Yes.

0:48:120:48:15

-Glass of wine, anyone?

-Yes.

-Oh, come on, then.

0:48:150:48:18

So far, we've spent much of our house hunt in Liguria's western Riviera.

0:48:290:48:34

But now I'm heading to the eastern stretch and the town of Chiavari.

0:48:340:48:38

For centuries it was an important commercial port filled with

0:48:380:48:41

hundreds of traditional enterprises based in the ancient arcades.

0:48:410:48:45

Remarkably, some of the old trades continue today and I'm meeting Princi -

0:48:450:48:49

a local resident who can help me find out more.

0:48:490:48:54

-Princi.

-Hi, Jules.

-Nice to see you.

-Nice to see you.

0:48:540:48:57

The medieval old town is full of caruggi -

0:48:590:49:01

the name given to the typical narrow streets.

0:49:010:49:04

Princi, this is a beautiful town and its history is everywhere.

0:49:050:49:10

-But what's it most famous for?

-The famous food is corzetti.

0:49:100:49:14

-And my best friend makes Curzetti Stampae.

-Your best friend?

0:49:140:49:20

Yeah, my best friend.

0:49:200:49:21

-I have come to the right place.

-Yeah.

0:49:210:49:25

Corzetti is a type of pasta.

0:49:250:49:27

In shape it's like a medallion

0:49:270:49:29

and it's imprinted with a design made by a wooden stamp.

0:49:290:49:33

It's unique to Liguria.

0:49:330:49:35

Franco Casoni, a world-famous sculptor

0:49:350:49:37

and woodcarver, is one craftsman who is still making these stamps.

0:49:370:49:42

-Hi, Franco.

-Ciao.

0:49:420:49:44

Franco, this is Jules. This is Franco, my best friend.

0:49:440:49:47

-Very nice to see you.

-My name is Franco.

0:49:470:49:49

He makes Curzetti Stampae.

0:49:490:49:51

So you're making the pasta with patterns in it

0:49:510:49:55

-and these are what you use to get the design?

-Yeah.

0:49:550:49:58

And what's the history behind the Curzetti Stampae?

0:49:580:50:02

OK, in the middle age, the bread was home-made

0:50:020:50:08

but not cooked in the houses.

0:50:080:50:11

So they brought the bread to a common bakery

0:50:110:50:18

and they needed to put a mark on the bread to recognise it.

0:50:180:50:24

-So the stamp meant that you got your bread back from the bakery.

-Yeah.

0:50:240:50:29

Only in Italy would I find a story that combines beautiful craftsmanship with food.

0:50:290:50:35

Si. Yeah.

0:50:350:50:37

This tradition of marking food then moved to pasta.

0:50:390:50:42

The designs became more ingenious, featuring coats of arms,

0:50:420:50:46

names, and lucky symbols.

0:50:460:50:48

-Any design is put on? Yeah.

-You prefer this design?

0:50:510:50:55

-The name, your name.

-Well, my name, it's a Latin name, actually.

0:50:550:50:59

-It's Julian or Jules for short.

-Look.

0:50:590:51:03

-This moment.

-He's going to do this in no...

0:51:030:51:06

This is going to be a speed cut, isn't it?

0:51:060:51:09

'Each stamp has a top and bottom and can feature a different design.

0:51:110:51:16

'They're made from beech, as it's a wood which doesn't flavour the food.'

0:51:160:51:20

He's so quick, he's so fast.

0:51:200:51:22

-Ah!

-HE LAUGHS

0:51:250:51:29

I love it, Franco, well done.

0:51:290:51:31

-But, doesn't it need another side, another half?

-Yes, this is the top.

0:51:310:51:37

-Are you going to try to carve it?

-Can I try and do this?

-Yeah.

0:51:370:51:40

Of course, we're doing it backwards, which doesn't help.

0:51:490:51:52

I have no room for the S.

0:51:560:51:57

No, no, no. S, this.

0:51:590:52:02

Oh!

0:52:050:52:06

-OK. Bravo.

-Just.

0:52:080:52:09

Bravo.

0:52:110:52:12

There, there's the top and there's your perfect bottom.

0:52:120:52:17

So what do you think, Princi?

0:52:170:52:19

They are fine but I think that we need to test it with pasta.

0:52:190:52:25

Thank you very much. I'm really hungry, let's go. Come on.

0:52:250:52:27

-Ciao.

-Ciao.

-Ciao.

0:52:270:52:31

Just around the corner is a traditional Ligurian trattoria,

0:52:310:52:34

where chef, Samir, serves corzetti pasta.

0:52:340:52:38

-Hi, Samir.

-Hi.

0:52:380:52:39

This is Jules.

0:52:390:52:41

Hi, Samir. Nice to see you.

0:52:410:52:44

We have a Curzetti Stampae.

0:52:440:52:48

-So we just need some pasta to go with it.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:52:480:52:51

We've come to the right place.

0:52:510:52:53

What kind of a dish is he going to make for us?

0:52:530:52:56

We will eat a dish with corzetti and pesto.

0:52:560:53:00

I love pesto.

0:53:000:53:02

The medallions are cut out from the rolled pasta

0:53:030:53:06

and are then ready to be stamped.

0:53:060:53:09

-It's like making biscuits, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:53:090:53:12

Franco's stamp is on the top half and my effort is on the bottom.

0:53:140:53:18

Well, let's see how they've worked out. There we are, Princi.

0:53:210:53:26

-That is Franco's side, isn't it?

-Yes.

-It's nice.

0:53:260:53:30

-But, let's have a look, ready?

-Yeah.

0:53:300:53:34

-SHE LAUGHS

-It's rubbish.

0:53:340:53:36

That's my side, you can barely see it.

0:53:360:53:39

But it's not going to affect what they taste like.

0:53:390:53:41

I can't wait to try that covered in pesto, beautifully cooked.

0:53:410:53:46

There we are, sir. Thank you very much.

0:53:460:53:48

-Let's leave the chef to his work. Come on.

-OK.

0:53:480:53:52

It's not just these stamps that are unique to Liguria.

0:53:520:53:56

So too is pesto.

0:53:560:53:57

It originated in Genoa,

0:53:570:53:59

but is now one of the most popular sauces across Italy.

0:53:590:54:02

It's made with garlic, basil, pine nuts, oil and Parmesan.

0:54:020:54:07

One thing that has become more obvious to me

0:54:070:54:10

is just how important food is.

0:54:100:54:12

Yeah, it is our identity

0:54:120:54:15

this kind of food and for Italians it's very important.

0:54:150:54:21

-Grazie.

-Grazie.

0:54:250:54:28

I can't actually see the marks of the stamp any more

0:54:280:54:31

but that doesn't matter because it's now covered, bathed, in pesto.

0:54:310:54:35

Ready?

0:54:350:54:37

Bon appetit in Italy.

0:54:370:54:39

You probably would expect me to say this...

0:54:410:54:44

but, genuinely, that is absolutely delicious.

0:54:440:54:49

It's handmade pasta, it's handmade pesto.

0:54:490:54:52

It's been stamped with my very own handmade stamp.

0:54:520:54:56

-Princi, thank you very much.

-Cheers.

-Cheers.

0:54:560:54:59

Here's to you. And Chiavari.

0:54:590:55:01

So, with all our houses viewed,

0:55:070:55:09

we've come to the end of our property hunt in Liguria.

0:55:090:55:14

-Is that everything?

-Not quite.

-Oh, no, don't forget that.

0:55:140:55:16

-Goodness.

-And... Lemons.

0:55:160:55:19

My lovely lemons.

0:55:190:55:21

It's time to pack up and think about what they have seen

0:55:210:55:23

and make some decisions about what's next.

0:55:230:55:26

Well, how about that for a bit of Italian fun?

0:55:290:55:32

And that's what we've been having this week - loads of fun.

0:55:320:55:34

But, with a serious intent -

0:55:340:55:35

to try and find Michael and Kelly a place they can call home in Liguria.

0:55:350:55:40

We've spoiled them, frankly, with options, they can choose only one.

0:55:400:55:43

But which one will it be? Well, let's go and ask them.

0:55:430:55:47

-Well, Kelly and Michael, it's been quite a fun few days.

-It has.

0:55:530:55:56

-It's been great.

-Exhausted? Yes.

-A rollercoaster.

0:55:560:55:59

We've given you lots of options but which one was your favourite?

0:56:010:56:05

I think I'd have to say the Mystery House.

0:56:050:56:08

That surprises me and I think it surprises Michael too. Why?

0:56:080:56:12

Because I could see the potential in it.

0:56:120:56:16

Beautiful location,

0:56:160:56:18

looking across that stunning village was just gorgeous.

0:56:180:56:22

I think if you and I had to make a bet we'd have said it was

0:56:220:56:25

-the apartment in Albenga.

-Yes.

0:56:250:56:28

I did like that, I did like that a lot, actually.

0:56:280:56:31

And I could see myself spending some very happy times

0:56:310:56:36

pottering about in that apartment.

0:56:360:56:38

But there was something about just being able to have that garden,

0:56:380:56:42

little bit of garden.

0:56:420:56:44

That last house, lovely house, but we have a budget.

0:56:440:56:47

That house is where it is because it's within the budget.

0:56:470:56:50

Move it where you want it and we can't afford it.

0:56:500:56:52

And we can't get away from the fact that we like being

0:56:520:56:56

near people in a community and no matter how lovely the other

0:56:560:56:59

place would be, I don't think we'd enjoy it in the long term.

You loved the Mystery House for all its charm and simplicity and because

0:57:030:57:07

it harks back to what you knew here as a child and, of course, those views.

0:57:070:57:11

But you recognise it's in the wrong place.

0:57:110:57:13

So what would be on your wish list now?

0:57:130:57:16

What will you go looking for in the future?

0:57:160:57:18

-Well, I know what I'm going to look for.

-Go on.

0:57:180:57:21

I'm going to look for that little house further down the hill!

0:57:210:57:27

Sorry.

0:57:270:57:28

Well, guys, it's been a lot of fun, as I'm sure anybody

0:57:280:57:31

-watching this will know.

-It's been great.

0:57:310:57:33

We've explored, we've travelled, we've met some great people,

0:57:330:57:36

we've seen some fantastic countryside.

0:57:360:57:39

And we've rather enjoyed the food and drink, haven't we?

0:57:390:57:41

We certainly have. It's been great, thank you very much.

0:57:410:57:45

-Well, here's to you. Cheers.

-Chin-chin.

-Salute.

0:57:450:57:49

You know, I have to confess,

0:57:530:57:54

that I have fallen a little bit in love with Liguria this week,

0:57:540:57:57

just as Kelly did all those years ago.

0:57:570:58:00

And although it is a bit disappointing that

0:58:000:58:02

we haven't found them the home they were looking for, at least they

0:58:020:58:05

now have a much clearer idea of what they are going to be looking for.

0:58:050:58:09

And, in my experience, that is half the battle in finding any new home.

0:58:090:58:13

So, from me and Liguria, arrivederci.

0:58:130:58:16

I'll see you next time.
