Welcome to Escape To The Continent. The historical hill town behind me

0:00:020:00:05

that shines out against the surrounding lush countryside is,

0:00:050:00:08

understandably, known as Citta Bianca, the White City.

0:00:080:00:14

But where is it? And why was the whole town painted white?

0:00:140:00:18

Find out in just a moment.

0:00:180:00:20

Coming up, we meet a husband and wife venturing to

0:00:390:00:42

uncharted territory, where they find a world

0:00:420:00:45

of novel bricks and mortar.

0:00:450:00:47

-Cosy?

-Cosy.

0:00:470:00:49

-Thinking of all those words apart from small.

-Small, yeah.

0:00:490:00:53

But soon, the adventure opens out into a rather hands-on experience.

0:00:530:00:57

-Oh, he hasn't done that before.

-No, he hasn't.

0:00:570:01:00

We haven't had a stroking moment.

0:01:000:01:02

Today, I'm in southern Italy, in the Puglia region,

0:01:070:01:10

and this is the hilltop town of Ostuni.

0:01:100:01:13

It is believed the whitewashing of the whole town is

0:01:130:01:16

a result of the plague during the 17th century.

0:01:160:01:20

In an attempt to prevent the disease from spreading,

0:01:200:01:23

homes of infected residents were singled out and painted white,

0:01:230:01:27

using a mixture of limestone,

0:01:270:01:29

dust and water to deter people from entering.

0:01:290:01:32

Soon locals began to notice there seem to be less illness

0:01:320:01:36

around these white homes and promptly put it down to a miracle,

0:01:360:01:40

although in truth, it is more likely

0:01:400:01:42

the calcium carbonate in the limewash

0:01:420:01:45

acting as a natural disinfectant which helped save the townspeople.

0:01:450:01:50

Today, Ostuni is still painted white

0:01:500:01:53

and stands as testament to its rather lucky escape.

0:01:530:01:56

But this stunning town is certainly not all Puglia has to offer.

0:01:560:02:01

Just under a three-hour flight from London, Puglia encompasses

0:02:030:02:07

the long strip of land that makes up the heel of the Italian boot.

0:02:070:02:10

As such, the area benefits from the longest coastline of any

0:02:100:02:14

mainland region in Italy,

0:02:140:02:16

lapped by the waters of both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.

0:02:160:02:21

This strategic coastal position has had a lengthy influence

0:02:210:02:24

on Puglia's history.

0:02:240:02:25

And the area features many fortified towns carved into the cliffs.

0:02:250:02:29

One gem is Gallipoli, an important trading port during the 17th

0:02:290:02:34

and 18th centuries for lamp oil,

0:02:340:02:36

produced from the abundance of olive trees.

0:02:360:02:38

In fact, the region is carpeted by olive groves

0:02:380:02:41

and has the highest concentration in all of Italy.

0:02:410:02:45

Well-known for its cuisine,

0:02:450:02:46

80% of the nation's pasta is produced here.

0:02:460:02:49

And Puglia's signature orecchiette shape is still

0:02:490:02:52

handmade by artisans in the region's capital of Bari.

0:02:520:02:56

But what really gives this place its identity must be its architecture.

0:02:560:03:01

And this is the home of the trulli,

0:03:010:03:03

which are distinct cone-topped cottages unique to Puglia.

0:03:030:03:07

The first trulli date back to the 16th century

0:03:070:03:10

and were originally mortarless constructions.

0:03:100:03:13

Today, these rural dwellings are getting snapped up by foreign

0:03:130:03:17

buyers who have transformed them into wonderful individual houses,

0:03:170:03:21

so much so that British expats living here now affectionately refer

0:03:210:03:25

to the region as Trullishire.

0:03:250:03:28

With a warm, dry climate and a plentiful supply of historic

0:03:310:03:35

Italian homes, it is no wonder that in the last ten years,

0:03:350:03:39

Puglia has become a bit of a hotspot for British buyers.

0:03:390:03:42

What's more, the region's house prices are very appealing too,

0:03:420:03:47

particularly as they can be up to 60% cheaper than back home.

0:03:470:03:51

The average cost of a modern three-bedroom villa

0:03:510:03:54

starts at about £100,000,

0:03:540:03:57

whereas a traditional farmhouse that has been renovated will

0:03:570:04:01

set you back around £200,000.

0:04:010:04:04

Now, that is approximately half the amount

0:04:040:04:07

you would pay for the equivalent property in the pricier

0:04:070:04:10

Italian regions of Umbria and Tuscany.

0:04:100:04:14

So what type of home are today's buyers looking for here in Puglia?

0:04:140:04:18

Well, let's meet them and find out.

0:04:180:04:20

Devoted husband and wife Malcolm

0:04:200:04:22

and Julie have just celebrated their 30-year wedding anniversary.

0:04:220:04:26

And for the last two decades, they have lived in a 300-year-old

0:04:260:04:30

three-bedroom cottage in the Kent village of Bridge.

0:04:300:04:33

But after holidaying in Tuscany a few times, they now have ideas

0:04:330:04:37

on a more Continental adventure for the next chapter of their lives.

0:04:370:04:41

This isn't like that old cliche, you know, you go on holiday

0:04:410:04:44

-and you fall in love with the place.

-It went deeper than that.

0:04:440:04:46

-There was something else. You can't really put your finger on it.

-No.

0:04:460:04:49

So we love the place. We really do.

0:04:490:04:51

Love the lifestyle as well.

0:04:510:04:53

The first thing that strikes you as soon as you drive through

0:04:530:04:55

Italy is just the scenery, the landscape, the climate.

0:04:550:05:00

And then obviously, once you are settling in there,

0:05:000:05:02

I just love the restaurant life, the cafe culture.

0:05:020:05:06

I love the wine. I absolutely adore the wine.

0:05:060:05:08

Malcolm is now retired after a career spent as a zoo keeper

0:05:080:05:12

for Howletts Wild Animal Park.

0:05:120:05:14

And Julie now works part-time at the local doctor's surgery after

0:05:140:05:18

a career in pharmaceuticals.

0:05:180:05:20

But they both hope the new Italian lifestyle will enable them

0:05:200:05:23

to focus more on their hobbies.

0:05:230:05:25

I love my cookery. And I think when you are in the country, it is

0:05:250:05:28

the best place to actually learn to cook properly.

0:05:280:05:31

Hopefully, I'll learn, you know, by visiting places

0:05:310:05:34

and seeing other people cooking.

0:05:340:05:35

We both love antiques as well, so...

0:05:350:05:38

And out there, they have the most amazing architectural,

0:05:380:05:41

agricultural...

0:05:410:05:43

I don't want to call it bric-a-brac, but we just love going around and

0:05:430:05:46

we just imagine filling our house with all these beautiful things.

0:05:460:05:49

One of the things I really enjoy is painting,

0:05:490:05:51

which I haven't done for years and years.

0:05:510:05:54

Now I've retired, I'm getting back into it.

0:05:540:05:56

So I am still at the learning stage at the moment.

0:05:560:05:59

But, no, I really enjoy. I really do enjoy it.

0:05:590:06:03

Malcolm built himself an art studio

0:06:030:06:04

at the bottom of their prize-winning garden and the couple

0:06:040:06:07

have spent a lot of time

0:06:070:06:09

beautifully renovating their listed period property.

0:06:090:06:12

In fact, another historic

0:06:120:06:14

and characterful home is high on the agenda when they move,

0:06:140:06:17

as well as getting to grips with the local lingo.

0:06:170:06:20

Italian is something I've always loved.

0:06:200:06:22

I think it is quite critical, really,

0:06:220:06:23

for me particularly, to be able to get a handle

0:06:230:06:26

on the Italian language,

0:06:260:06:27

as Malcolm...it's not really his second nature to speak

0:06:270:06:29

a second language.

0:06:290:06:31

I've already sort of tried to learn whenever we've been abroad.

0:06:310:06:33

Once I am normally immersed in the place I stay,

0:06:330:06:37

I have a very uncanny way of picking up a language,

0:06:370:06:40

as long as there is the old couple of glasses of wine available.

0:06:400:06:42

SHE CHUCKLES

0:06:420:06:45

Despite spending their whole lives in Kent, the decision to swap

0:06:450:06:49

the UK for Italy on a permanent basis was prompted

0:06:490:06:52

by a serious illness Malcolm suffered just a few years ago.

0:06:520:06:56

And now he's been given the all clear,

0:06:560:06:59

the experience has brought about a renewed zest for life.

0:06:590:07:02

When you hear the C word, you do think, you know,

0:07:020:07:05

you haven't got a lot longer.

0:07:050:07:07

And it is quite scary. So

0:07:070:07:09

as long as I've got a few more years,

0:07:090:07:12

I want to do it somewhere else.

0:07:120:07:15

I think it's going to actually generate a healthier lifestyle

0:07:150:07:19

for us that will help us, you know, keep us both fit and healthy

0:07:190:07:22

for a bit longer at least.

0:07:220:07:23

It really makes you sort of appreciate your mortality.

0:07:230:07:27

I think we both thought, you know, if we don't do it, we never will.

0:07:270:07:30

We never will, right. So we've got to do it.

0:07:300:07:33

Got to do it.

0:07:330:07:34

Julie and Malcolm have set their hearts on moving to Italy

0:07:370:07:40

but are looking for the best value for money, so have decided to try

0:07:400:07:44

Puglia, which is a region they have never previously visited.

0:07:440:07:47

We'll be exploring the area between Bari and Brindisi

0:07:470:07:51

at the top of the heel,

0:07:510:07:52

near the beautiful landscape of the Itria Valley, which is

0:07:520:07:55

a particularly popular part of Puglia with foreign buyers.

0:07:550:07:59

And now our couple have arrived here in Italy, we are all meeting

0:07:590:08:02

up to discuss the specifics of their planned relocation.

0:08:020:08:06

So, Malcolm and Julie, welcome to Puglia.

0:08:060:08:09

-Cos you're big fans of Italy, aren't you?

-We are.

0:08:090:08:12

Absolutely love it. We love it.

0:08:120:08:13

And hopefully, this country is going to be your future home.

0:08:130:08:16

But why Puglia? Why have you decided you want to explore this region?

0:08:160:08:20

We've already explored Tuscany and Umbria,

0:08:200:08:22

and we thought we'd come down this way to see what this was like.

0:08:220:08:25

That is the reason why we're here.

0:08:250:08:27

And what is it about the Italian lifestyle that so appeals

0:08:270:08:31

to you both?

0:08:310:08:32

I think it's a completely different culture - more family orientated,

0:08:320:08:37

more social. I mean, the food and the wine just goes without saying.

0:08:370:08:40

And then you are surrounded by fabulous scenery to boot.

0:08:400:08:43

-It's exciting, cos you don't know this region at all.

-No.

-No.

0:08:430:08:46

-Not at all.

-So it's going to be interesting to see what you think.

0:08:460:08:49

So describe to me your ideal property. What does it look like?

0:08:490:08:52

Well, we've certainly looked at the trullis,

0:08:520:08:55

which I think are just so quaint.

0:08:550:08:56

And it is something we have never stayed in or looked at.

0:08:560:08:59

So it is a real... Sort of quite exciting to see

0:08:590:09:01

something that is a little bit different from the traditional

0:09:010:09:04

sort of...I suppose Italian idea of a country house.

0:09:040:09:09

-We don't want a big house.

-No?

-Two, three bedrooms.

0:09:090:09:13

And a small piece of ground, really.

0:09:130:09:16

-Enough room for the dogs?

-Oh, yes, absolutely.

0:09:160:09:19

-And you are both passionate about your gardening.

-Yes, we do.

0:09:190:09:21

Now, you have won awards in the UK for your wonderful garden.

0:09:210:09:26

So it is going to be interesting moving here - we are seeing Puglia

0:09:260:09:28

out of season.

0:09:280:09:30

But we know in the summer, it gets extremely hot.

0:09:300:09:33

-So, different challenges.

-Yeah.

0:09:330:09:35

I mean, that, in terms of gardening,

0:09:350:09:36

opens up a different opportunity for different types of plants.

0:09:360:09:39

At home, I struggle with growing vegetables.

0:09:390:09:41

I spent more money putting the stuff in the ground than

0:09:410:09:44

I got out of it. So I'm really looking forward...

0:09:440:09:46

I might be able to grow stuff that actually works!

0:09:460:09:48

So remind us of this budget. How much have we got to spend?

0:09:480:09:51

£300,000.

0:09:510:09:53

And does that include the taxes as well?

0:09:530:09:55

Yes. Having sort of done a little bit of research,

0:09:550:09:58

I know that we have got to think of what we've got to spend

0:09:580:10:00

on top to actually secure the properties.

0:10:000:10:02

So, I mean, I am assuming that is going to work out roughly about...

0:10:020:10:06

It is about 8%.

0:10:060:10:08

-OK.

-Roughly 8%.

0:10:080:10:09

So the actual value of the house we're looking at is about 280,000.

0:10:090:10:13

-Pounds, not euros.

-Yes.

0:10:130:10:15

And with this budget, do you think you are realistic?

0:10:150:10:18

Are we going to find what you want for your money?

0:10:180:10:20

-I think so.

-I think so, yes.

0:10:200:10:22

Having had sort of a bit of research in other parts of Italy

0:10:220:10:25

but not knowing this area, I think we are going to find

0:10:250:10:27

something pretty spectacular.

0:10:270:10:29

-Well, I think we should get started, don't you?

-Fantastic, yes. Let's go.

0:10:290:10:32

On a budget of £280,000,

0:10:350:10:37

our buyers are hoping to find

0:10:370:10:39

a characterful, traditional home

0:10:390:10:41

with at least two bedrooms

0:10:410:10:42

and enough outdoor space

0:10:420:10:44

for their two dogs,

0:10:440:10:45

gardening as well as veg growing.

0:10:450:10:48

Malcolm's keen to find somewhere

0:10:480:10:50

to indulge his love of painting

0:10:500:10:51

and inspiring beautiful views

0:10:510:10:54

would be a bonus for both of them.

0:10:540:10:56

We found a range of particularly distinct Puglia homes to

0:10:560:10:59

tempt our couple, but I'll be keeping the prices a guessing

0:10:590:11:03

game until the end of each tour.

0:11:030:11:05

And we'll be ending our property journey at the mystery house,

0:11:050:11:08

which is a somewhat unconventional offering in the context

0:11:080:11:11

of the regional standard.

0:11:110:11:14

Julie and Malcolm are completely new to the area,

0:11:140:11:16

so we'll be presenting them

0:11:160:11:18

with an out-of-season experience to give them

0:11:180:11:20

a better understanding of what everyday Italian life is

0:11:200:11:23

like in the winter before they make a permanent commitment to this move.

0:11:230:11:28

We are starting the search in the heart of the Itria Valley,

0:11:350:11:38

heading for the small town of Cisternino.

0:11:380:11:41

Full of whitewashed houses lining its narrow streets,

0:11:410:11:45

the historic town of Cisternino has a charming market square

0:11:450:11:48

and many amenities including shops and restaurants.

0:11:480:11:52

And about two miles outside of the town,

0:11:520:11:54

is the rather unique house we have lined up to kick off.

0:11:540:11:58

-So, this is rather exciting because it is...

-Wow.

-..our first property.

0:11:590:12:04

-Love this.

-Amazing.

-I love it.

-Absolutely beautiful.

0:12:040:12:08

-Wow.

-So, the exciting adventure starts.

0:12:080:12:11

You said you loved trulli houses, well,

0:12:110:12:13

how about owning your own trullo property?

0:12:130:12:17

-It's beautiful.

-How old is it?

-This dates back to the 17th century.

0:12:170:12:20

-Does it really?

-Yes. It is actually one property.

0:12:200:12:23

So you have got the main house. You can see there's three cones.

0:12:230:12:27

-Yes.

-And then this is an outbuilding,

0:12:270:12:29

-ripe for conversion.

-Oh, I see.

-That's up your street.

0:12:290:12:33

-I can't wait to get inside, really.

-Let's start.

0:12:330:12:36

Built from local limestone, this unusual collection of buildings

0:12:360:12:40

was renovated and turned into a holiday home three years ago.

0:12:400:12:44

We are entering the middle trullo,

0:12:440:12:45

and the front door leads straight into a living area.

0:12:450:12:48

Your voyage of discovery...

0:12:480:12:51

-starts here.

-Oh, wow.

0:12:510:12:53

Oh, wow!

0:12:530:12:54

-You're kid... Oh, my.

-This is amazing.

-It really is amazing.

0:12:560:12:59

-A bit like a hobbit's house.

-It is.

-It is.

0:12:590:13:03

So a little bit of the history about these properties.

0:13:030:13:06

It is believed that when tax came in on properties, the farmers,

0:13:060:13:10

rather than paying tax, they built these temporary homes.

0:13:100:13:14

And that is the keystone just behind us.

0:13:140:13:17

So when the men came round to collect the taxes,

0:13:170:13:19

the farmer literally pulled out the keystone,

0:13:190:13:22

the whole thing would have come to the floor, just a pile of stones,

0:13:220:13:26

wouldn't have had to pay any tax.

0:13:260:13:27

When the king's men went, started to build it again.

0:13:270:13:31

-Ah.

-And that was the whole idea.

0:13:310:13:32

So originally, they wouldn't have had any cement, any mortar.

0:13:320:13:35

It literally... It was just

0:13:350:13:37

very cleverly, all done by hand, put together.

0:13:370:13:41

I love it. It's great.

0:13:410:13:44

-So this is your sitting room.

-Oh, it is?!

-Right, OK.

0:13:440:13:49

-Yeah.

-Oh, well, um...

0:13:490:13:50

-So...tidy, compact?

-Bijou, yes.

0:13:500:13:52

We'll have to sell some furniture, won't we?

0:13:520:13:54

SHE LAUGHS All of it.

0:13:540:13:56

There's only two of us.

0:13:560:13:58

-Next door, you've got the family shower room.

-OK.

0:13:580:14:00

And a little bit of storage in there as well.

0:14:000:14:03

You've got a bedroom through there.

0:14:030:14:05

But let's wander through, and I'll show you the kitchen.

0:14:050:14:08

Oh, wow.

0:14:080:14:09

The kitchen is found beyond a small seating area and

0:14:090:14:12

occupies its own trullo.

0:14:120:14:14

Oh, wow.

0:14:160:14:17

-Oh, amazing.

-Oh, wow.

0:14:180:14:20

-Oh, I love this. Plenty of space.

-Yeah.

0:14:200:14:24

So, how much are we challenging you?

0:14:240:14:26

Because, let's be honest,

0:14:260:14:28

-this isn't your run-of-the-mill property, is it?

-It's not, no.

0:14:280:14:31

You couldn't get any more different than this, can you? To be honest.

0:14:310:14:36

Does Kent seem a long way away?

0:14:360:14:38

It does. It seems like a for... Well, we are in a foreign land, but...

0:14:380:14:42

I don't know, it almost seems biblical inside as well.

0:14:420:14:45

-Doesn't it?

-That's a good description.

-Yeah.

0:14:450:14:48

-Well, shall we continue?

-Yes.

-The master bedroom is next door.

-OK.

0:14:480:14:52

-Well, it's this way. It's a decent size, isn't it?

-Gosh, it is, yeah.

0:14:550:14:59

Another hole up there. Is that where put your husbands when they snore?

0:14:590:15:04

-Is it large enough for the two of you?

-Oh, yes.

0:15:040:15:06

Probably big enough, yeah. It's only the two of us.

0:15:060:15:09

Well, we do have an en-suite, and it is a generous size en-suite as well.

0:15:090:15:13

Fabulous, fabulous.

0:15:130:15:15

Everywhere you look, it is just bright, light, airy...

0:15:150:15:18

-It's beautiful.

-Yeah, I love it.

0:15:180:15:20

I couldn't be more thrilled with Julie and Malcolm's reactions

0:15:200:15:24

to our first property.

0:15:240:15:25

And I think they'll also love the fact that it comes

0:15:250:15:28

with 3.5 acres of land,

0:15:280:15:31

giving Julie plenty of scope to put her green fingers to good use.

0:15:310:15:34

Oh, wow.

0:15:340:15:35

-It is something else, isn't it?

-Beautiful, absolutely stunning.

0:15:390:15:43

-It's amazing.

-So now, we are going to have to discuss finances.

0:15:430:15:48

Are you going to have a stab? What do we think it is on the market for?

0:15:480:15:51

I think...

0:15:510:15:52

260.

0:15:530:15:55

-OK.

-I was roughly around that, about 250 I was thinking.

0:15:550:16:00

But I don't know. I have nothing to measure it against.

0:16:000:16:03

It's really hard, so...about 250, 260.

0:16:030:16:06

Asking price for this, our first home -

0:16:060:16:09

275.

0:16:090:16:11

-Is it?

-Oh, wow.

0:16:110:16:13

-£275,000.

-Mm-hm.

0:16:130:16:16

-You were both pretty close, weren't you?

-Yeah.

0:16:160:16:18

-I think you should have another look around on your own this time.

-OK.

0:16:180:16:21

-Why don't you?

-That would be brilliant.

-See you in a minute.

0:16:210:16:24

-Thanks.

-Thanks.

0:16:240:16:25

What a fantastic start. But what a property!

0:16:270:16:29

This one has really set the bar high.

0:16:290:16:32

This unique and historic home

0:16:350:16:37

comes in at £5,000 under Julie and Malcolm's budget.

0:16:370:16:41

And with one trullo not yet converted,

0:16:410:16:43

there's the opportunity for Malcolm to create his very own art studio.

0:16:430:16:47

The property is full of the rustic charm they're after

0:16:470:16:50

and features two bedrooms,

0:16:500:16:52

two bathrooms,

0:16:520:16:53

as well as a substantial

0:16:530:16:54

plot of land that could be perfect

0:16:540:16:56

for both dogs and gardening.

0:16:560:16:59

Absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you look.

0:16:590:17:02

Here is a bit of a doer-upper, Malc.

0:17:020:17:04

Yeah, it is, isn't it? Dark in here, though, isn't it?

0:17:040:17:07

You can see what this was like before they actually started

0:17:070:17:09

-doing anything.

-Yeah.

-So would you have to strip it all back and...?

0:17:090:17:13

It really wants doing properly, doesn't it?

0:17:130:17:16

It's the surprise when you get inside.

0:17:160:17:18

You know, they're more spacious than you think they are.

0:17:180:17:22

And light and airy.

0:17:220:17:23

And I just think they're great little houses, they really are.

0:17:230:17:27

I could see myself living here. I really could.

0:17:270:17:29

It's the first time I've ever been inside a trullo

0:17:290:17:32

and it was nothing like I was expecting.

0:17:320:17:35

Very individual, very beautifully done.

0:17:350:17:38

You know, at home, we've got an old, quirky house.

0:17:380:17:41

If we move to Italy, we'd have an old, quirky house here,

0:17:410:17:44

wouldn't we? So it'd be all right.

0:17:440:17:46

-Happy?

-Absolutely wonderful.

-It is an extraordinary property, isn't it?

0:17:490:17:53

What a way to start off our house search.

0:17:530:17:55

-And that's only the first one. Ready to go?

-Yes.

-Yep.

0:17:550:17:59

With spirits high, we are keeping up the momentum

0:18:050:18:08

and travelling straight to our next property.

0:18:080:18:11

We are heading west, and the destination is Martina Franca,

0:18:110:18:14

staying within the picturesque Itria Valley.

0:18:140:18:17

A fair-sized town, Martina Franca is full of history,

0:18:170:18:21

featuring grand architecture and a mix of Baroque influences,

0:18:210:18:25

nowhere more so than the heavily sculpted Basilica, where many operas

0:18:250:18:29

and classical music concerts are performed

0:18:290:18:32

throughout the summer months.

0:18:320:18:33

At the heart of the town is an elegant paved square

0:18:330:18:36

and there is a good selection of shops and facilities to hand.

0:18:360:18:39

The next house is just three miles away.

0:18:390:18:42

And after a great response from both parties to the trulli home

0:18:420:18:46

this morning, we have lined up another one.

0:18:460:18:49

So, continuing your love affair with trulli houses...

0:18:490:18:53

-take a look at this.

-Oh, wow, different.

0:18:530:18:55

-Very different.

-It is, isn't it? Nice.

0:18:550:18:58

So there is your original trullo property, around 18th century.

0:18:580:19:02

It has got three cones.

0:19:020:19:04

And you always get the steps to the side,

0:19:040:19:06

so it is easy access to maintain the roof.

0:19:060:19:08

You'll always see that. But you've actually got an extension,

0:19:080:19:11

a more modern extension, on the side,

0:19:110:19:13

which gives you a lot more space.

0:19:130:19:16

Right, OK.

0:19:160:19:17

It looks good from the outside.

0:19:170:19:20

-Shall we step inside?

-Yes, let's.

0:19:200:19:22

This majestic property marries old

0:19:230:19:25

and new with its traditional trulli and modern adjoining villa.

0:19:250:19:29

We're starting off in the oldest part of the property,

0:19:290:19:31

where the door leads into a living/dining room.

0:19:310:19:35

Step inside.

0:19:350:19:36

Oh, wow.

0:19:380:19:40

-This is different.

-It's different.

0:19:400:19:43

-Yeah.

-Impactful, isn't it? Not what you expect.

-No.

0:19:430:19:46

Actually, I quite like it.

0:19:460:19:48

-In a way, it has been divided into three parts.

-Yep.

0:19:480:19:51

Because here are your three cones. So you've got a seated area here.

0:19:510:19:55

Then you've got your dining area.

0:19:550:19:57

And at the far end, you've got a wonderful fire

0:19:570:20:00

and another little sitting room

0:20:000:20:02

-with access to the garden.

-Perfect.

-Excellent.

0:20:020:20:05

Well, we know the extension was done relatively recently.

0:20:050:20:09

-Let's see what you make of this.

-OK.

0:20:090:20:11

-So, we present to you a tiled Italian kitchen.

-Oh, right.

0:20:160:20:20

-Gosh, that is a contrast.

-It is.

0:20:200:20:22

-I wasn't expecting that at all, actually. I like this.

-I'm confused.

0:20:220:20:26

-Are you?

-Yeah, entirely confused.

-Why does it confuse you, Malcolm?

0:20:260:20:29

You see a trulli and you don't expect to see a modern extension on it.

0:20:290:20:35

I am open-minded. It is warming on me.

0:20:350:20:38

-Let's continue.

-Yes.

-On that note.

-Right.

0:20:380:20:41

A narrow corridor leads along the extension.

0:20:430:20:46

And next door to the kitchen is a shower room.

0:20:460:20:48

At the other end is a large and bright spare bedroom

0:20:480:20:51

and in the middle is the master.

0:20:510:20:54

-This has its own en-suite.

-Right.

0:20:540:20:56

Something we've never had the luxury of at home

0:20:560:20:59

because of the age of the house.

0:20:590:21:01

This is actually a nice size, a very nice size.

0:21:010:21:04

Julie and Malcolm do seem to be pretty receptive

0:21:040:21:07

to our properties so far, which is great.

0:21:070:21:10

I can't wait to show them the grounds here.

0:21:100:21:12

Leading out from the extension is a pleasant patio. But that's not all.

0:21:120:21:16

Oh, beautiful.

0:21:180:21:19

Oh, wow.

0:21:210:21:23

-Gosh, that's a surprise.

-So, what do you think?

0:21:230:21:25

-Fantastic.

-Oh, yeah.

0:21:250:21:27

What a view.

0:21:270:21:29

And what a pool!

0:21:290:21:30

-You can cook outside, you've got an oven there.

-I'm liking that.

0:21:320:21:35

-So regarding the land, it's quite large, over two acres.

-Wow.

0:21:350:21:39

But the good news is, the local farmer takes care of it for you.

0:21:390:21:43

All this strip,

0:21:430:21:44

he grows animal feed - looks after it,

0:21:440:21:46

takes care of it, you don't have to do anything.

0:21:460:21:49

But it means it is all yours, but you don't have to do the hard work.

0:21:490:21:52

I like the sound of that.

0:21:520:21:53

Right. And... (It's quiet.)

0:21:530:21:56

-It's really quiet.

-So peaceful.

0:21:560:21:59

I realise it is an awful lot to take in.

0:21:590:22:02

But we are going to now have to try and put a price on this property.

0:22:020:22:06

-I think it is going to be at least on or maybe above.

-300.

0:22:060:22:09

-Do you think?

-I think so.

-300, Malcolm?

-Yeah.

0:22:090:22:12

290, I was thinking. 295.

0:22:120:22:15

The asking price

0:22:150:22:17

-is around £358,000.

-Wow.

0:22:170:22:22

-That's a lot more than I thought.

-Well, I don't want to scare you.

0:22:220:22:25

-OK.

-I'm going to give you another price.

-OK.

0:22:250:22:28

The owner will accept

0:22:280:22:30

-£280,000.

-Really? My God!

0:22:300:22:34

-Yeah.

-Really?

-Yep. I think you need another look around.

-I do, yeah.

0:22:340:22:38

-Off you go.

-OK.

-See you in a minute.

0:22:380:22:41

The benefits of property shopping here out of the tourist

0:22:420:22:45

season is that there are fewer buyers to compete with,

0:22:450:22:48

therefore potentially more bargains to be had.

0:22:480:22:52

So although this updated trulli is on the market for £78,000

0:22:520:22:56

over Julie and Malcolm's budget,

0:22:560:22:58

the owner is willing to accept exactly what they have got to spend.

0:22:580:23:03

The property has two bedrooms with the added bonus of an en-suite.

0:23:030:23:07

And outside, the two-acre garden comes with a large patio

0:23:070:23:10

and a swimming pool.

0:23:100:23:12

The property is a combination of the two styles - traditional and modern.

0:23:120:23:17

And so when you first came in, it was quite a lot to

0:23:170:23:19

take in in one go and get a sort of an immediate positive, I think.

0:23:190:23:24

But having had the chance to walk around it, you can

0:23:240:23:26

see how the traditional side has worked really well and is very cosy.

0:23:260:23:30

And then obviously, moving into the modern side,

0:23:300:23:32

what you'd be able to add on to it.

0:23:320:23:35

I can see the benefits of the modern part, obviously,

0:23:350:23:37

because you have the newer rooms,

0:23:370:23:38

a bit more space in the total unit size,

0:23:380:23:41

but I think it lost what I loved in the first property -

0:23:410:23:44

that real traditional, sort of country, cosy feel.

0:23:440:23:49

Pleasantly surprised at what you can do with one of these.

0:23:490:23:52

The layout is very good. The grounds are ideal, really.

0:23:520:23:57

But I don't think it is the house for us.

0:23:570:24:00

Have I given you both enough time to have a good look around?

0:24:000:24:03

-Yes, yes, you have.

-It is not your usual house search here, is it?

0:24:030:24:07

-No.

-Absolutely not.

0:24:070:24:09

-Kept you on your toes?

-Yes.

-Yeah?

0:24:090:24:11

Given us lots to think about, lots to think about.

0:24:110:24:14

Good. Well, that is it as far as the houses go for today,

0:24:140:24:16

because, as you can see, it is getting dark,

0:24:160:24:18

but I do have one final thing to show you.

0:24:180:24:21

-Let's jump in the car.

-OK.

-Right.

0:24:210:24:23

As the night draws in, we've travelled back to Cisternino,

0:24:300:24:33

where Julie and Malcolm's taste of the real Puglia can really begin...

0:24:330:24:38

Follow me.

0:24:380:24:39

..as we have arranged for them to stay in a self-catering apartment

0:24:390:24:42

in the centre of the small town.

0:24:420:24:44

Step inside.

0:24:500:24:53

Because this is where you are going to be staying for the next

0:24:540:24:57

-few nights.

-Wonderful.

-Fantastic.

0:24:570:25:01

So, we have brought you to the town of Cisternino, which is

0:25:010:25:03

-a beautiful old medieval town.

-Excellent.

-Excellent.

0:25:030:25:07

You don't want to stay in a generic hotel when you could be

0:25:070:25:10

in the heart of the town, experiencing all things Italian.

0:25:100:25:14

-So there is the key.

-Thank you.

-Make yourselves at home.

0:25:140:25:17

Your cases are already in. There is food in the fridge.

0:25:170:25:21

Feel free to explore tonight, have a wander.

0:25:210:25:24

Do get some rest because tomorrow I have got some more properties

0:25:240:25:27

-to show you.

-Brilliant.

-Yeah? Enjoy.

-Lovely.

-Thank you.

-See you.

0:25:270:25:31

Amazing, huh?

0:25:370:25:39

-Yeah.

-Get the kettle on.

0:25:390:25:40

That's it. I hope they get a good night's sleep.

0:25:420:25:46

It is the dawn of a new day for our property search

0:25:530:25:56

in the beautiful Italian region of Puglia, where, unlike the long,

0:25:560:26:00

sunny days of the summer, we are limited to just

0:26:000:26:02

nine hours of daylight, and today we have got a lot to get through.

0:26:020:26:06

Well, a rather pleasant surprise start of our house search

0:26:080:26:11

here in Puglia with Malcolm and Julie.

0:26:110:26:14

The first property we showed them was a trulli house,

0:26:140:26:17

or if they are on their own, it is called a trullo.

0:26:170:26:20

Now, this one was rustic, quite remote and, guess what,

0:26:200:26:25

they both seemed to love it.

0:26:250:26:26

I thought it might be a step too far to start off with,

0:26:260:26:29

but, no, they embraced it.

0:26:290:26:31

So let's see how we get on today with the next property.

0:26:310:26:35

Ah! Well, hello. This is where you are hiding.

0:26:360:26:40

-Did you have a good night last night?

-Yes.

-Lovely, thank you.

0:26:400:26:43

How was the accommodation?

0:26:430:26:45

-Perfect.

-Great.

-Beautiful.

0:26:450:26:47

You managed to put houses out of your mind for a little bit, I hope.

0:26:470:26:50

-Just a little bit.

-Ready for the next challenge.

0:26:500:26:53

Really? And what about the town? This is a beautiful spot.

0:26:530:26:56

I love the square.

0:26:560:26:57

Yes, we had a little wander around. Beautiful little streets.

0:26:570:27:01

It is a very pretty little place.

0:27:010:27:03

-How is the Italian? Have you tried?

-Not.

0:27:030:27:07

-JULIE LAUGHS

-Come on, Malcolm!

0:27:070:27:09

-Little bit of the lingo?

-No...

0:27:090:27:12

-You've not got it, have you?

-No, I haven't got it.

0:27:120:27:14

-You ordered a coffee, so you've got something.

-Julie done that.

0:27:140:27:17

THEY LAUGH

0:27:170:27:19

So, if you want to finish your drinks, then off we'll go.

0:27:190:27:21

-All right.

-Brilliant.

-Come on, then.

0:27:210:27:24

Before we get back to the business of house hunting,

0:27:320:27:35

I want to introduce Julie and Malcolm to a couple

0:27:350:27:37

who've already made the move to this region.

0:27:370:27:39

We've come to the small town of Alberobello, where we are meeting

0:27:390:27:44

expats Sue and Klaus Derigs at the local market.

0:27:440:27:47

Sue and Klaus, great to meet you.

0:27:470:27:49

-Thank you for inviting us here this morning.

-Lovely to meet you.

0:27:490:27:53

And I'd love to introduce you to Julie and Malcolm,

0:27:530:27:56

who are hoping to follow in your footsteps, because you have

0:27:560:27:59

made a very successful new life for yourselves out here.

0:27:590:28:02

I mean, you are practically local, aren't you?

0:28:020:28:04

-They're hoping to do the same.

-We are, yep.

0:28:040:28:05

I think I might go and have a coffee and leave you guys to it,

0:28:050:28:08

-how does that sound?

-Yep.

0:28:080:28:09

-Sounds good.

-We'll sort it out, yes.

0:28:090:28:11

Thank you. See you later.

0:28:110:28:13

-OK. Bye. Shall we go over this way?

-Yes.

0:28:130:28:15

The lads and ladies are splitting up,

0:28:150:28:18

so no prizes for guessing where Julie and Sue are heading first.

0:28:180:28:22

-The shoes are down this way.

-Oh, brilliant.

-So we'll go down.

0:28:220:28:24

My favourite department store.

0:28:240:28:26

They are rather nice. Lots of them.

0:28:260:28:29

Do you find generally clothes

0:28:290:28:30

and shoes or just generally things a lot cheaper out here?

0:28:300:28:34

-On the market stalls, they're very cheap.

-Yeah.

0:28:340:28:37

Scusi.

0:28:370:28:38

Grazie.

0:28:390:28:41

-See, that is the type of thing I wear.

-Oh, you like these type.

-Yeah.

0:28:420:28:45

-There are gorgeous. Is that 79?

-79 euros. Cos they are leather,

0:28:450:28:49

they're quite expensive. They are not your ten euro...

0:28:490:28:52

Kilo.

0:28:530:28:55

On the other side of the market, Malcolm and Klaus are picking up

0:28:550:28:59

provisions for lunch.

0:28:590:29:00

Originally from Germany, Klaus spent 30 years

0:29:000:29:03

working in the UK, which is where he met his wife, Sue.

0:29:030:29:07

-OK?

-OK, grazie.

0:29:070:29:09

So, grapes we need.

0:29:100:29:11

The cost of living is generally lower here

0:29:110:29:14

in the south of Italy than the wealthier northern regions.

0:29:140:29:17

And on average,

0:29:170:29:18

groceries in Puglia are about 30% cheaper than the UK.

0:29:180:29:21

-Kilo.

-Kilo.

0:29:210:29:23

The weekly markets are great places to find the best bargains,

0:29:230:29:27

particularly fresh fruit and vegetables,

0:29:270:29:29

much of which is grown locally.

0:29:290:29:31

-There you go.

-OK.

0:29:310:29:33

Un euro, cinquanta.

0:29:330:29:35

-Was that 1.50?

-1.50 a kilo.

0:29:370:29:40

God, we get the small boxes like this at home for about two or three quid.

0:29:410:29:46

As well as the fantastic market,

0:29:460:29:48

Alberobello also boasts

0:29:480:29:50

the highest concentration of trulli in the world.

0:29:500:29:53

With over 1,000 of the quaint limestone buildings lining

0:29:530:29:56

the streets, the town has been recognised as a World Heritage Site.

0:29:560:30:00

And when Sue and Klaus visited Puglia,

0:30:000:30:03

they decided the trulli life

0:30:030:30:04

was the way forward for their retirement.

0:30:040:30:07

After a few years of challenging renovation work, they finally moved

0:30:070:30:11

into their property eight years ago, where we have all come for lunch.

0:30:110:30:15

How easy is the whole buying process, in your opinion,

0:30:150:30:19

out here in Italy?

0:30:190:30:20

-It was quite simple, really.

-I think if you have good support...

0:30:200:30:23

In that sense, I think we've been quite lucky.

0:30:230:30:26

Can I ask, things like water, electricity, gas, I mean,

0:30:260:30:30

are they expensive over here?

0:30:300:30:32

Energy costs in Italy are the highest in Europe.

0:30:320:30:35

I mean, we have central heating system,

0:30:350:30:37

which was the biggest mistake we ever made.

0:30:370:30:39

When we first came here, it was 60 cents a litre for gas.

0:30:390:30:44

And it is now 97 cents.

0:30:440:30:46

In the first year, I spent 4,000 euros

0:30:460:30:50

and I wasn't even warm.

0:30:500:30:51

-Really, 4,000?!

-So that's why we reverted to a wood burner.

0:30:510:30:57

And how many months of the winter would you say you rely on that?

0:30:570:31:00

-Definitely...

-There is a very honest answer which may surprise you.

0:31:000:31:04

-November...

-You have to heat from about late October to March, April.

0:31:040:31:09

-Right, OK.

-Just like in the UK.

-OK.

0:31:090:31:11

The idea that there is permanent sunshine and warmth, just forget it.

0:31:110:31:15

What about water over here?

0:31:150:31:17

Because some properties aren't on mains water, it has to be delivered.

0:31:170:31:21

You learn to appreciate water. You don't waste it.

0:31:210:31:25

If you have a shower...

0:31:250:31:27

I turn the water off in-between... Sort of wetting my hair,

0:31:270:31:30

turn the water off, shampoo, turn it back on again...

0:31:300:31:34

You have done a wonderful job here, it is a beautiful home.

0:31:340:31:37

I mean, trulli, specifically trullos,

0:31:370:31:40

we have seen a few now,

0:31:400:31:42

and I just wonder what the realities are of actually living in one.

0:31:420:31:45

Most trullos have got quite small kitchens.

0:31:450:31:49

And also they can be quite dark because you've got the small windows,

0:31:490:31:54

whereas we were lucky. Because the back of the house was all

0:31:540:31:59

extended, we could put in great big windows, which in the trullo,

0:31:590:32:03

you can't normally, because sometimes it is just the one door in and out.

0:32:030:32:07

Malcolm, have you been surprised

0:32:070:32:09

how many trullis there are in this region?

0:32:090:32:10

I didn't... I just thought there'd be a couple hundred.

0:32:100:32:13

I thought it was quite rare.

0:32:130:32:15

I didn't realise there'd be thousands of them.

0:32:150:32:17

They're all right. Julie loves them better than I do.

0:32:170:32:20

Well, listen, it has been so insightful. Thank you both.

0:32:200:32:24

And hopefully, we've brought Malcolm

0:32:240:32:26

and Julie a big step closer to making that big decision.

0:32:260:32:31

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-I hope we haven't discouraged you.

0:32:310:32:34

-No, you didn't. There's plenty to think about.

-Yes.

0:32:340:32:37

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:32:370:32:39

If Julie and Malcolm do take the plunge and move to Puglia,

0:32:390:32:43

there are a few things they need to bear in mind.

0:32:430:32:46

On average, it is wise to factor in an extra 8% to 10%

0:32:460:32:49

of the overall purchase price to buy a property in Italy,

0:32:490:32:53

which is to cover taxes and fees.

0:32:530:32:54

It is also best to confirm the percentage that your agent

0:32:540:32:57

charges before you begin your property search.

0:32:570:33:00

And if you want to buy a trullo, remember that

0:33:000:33:03

they are protected buildings,

0:33:030:33:05

much like listed properties back home,

0:33:050:33:07

and so have strict regulations when it comes to renovations.

0:33:070:33:10

Hopefully, Sue and Klaus's vital information will better

0:33:100:33:14

prepare Julie and Malcolm about the practicalities of life in Puglia.

0:33:140:33:18

But we have still got houses to see, so it is back to the property hunt.

0:33:180:33:22

The house we have lined up today is towards the north of the region,

0:33:290:33:32

around four miles from Castellana Grotte,

0:33:320:33:35

which is about a 20 minutes' drive to the sea.

0:33:350:33:38

Castellana Grotte is a small

0:33:400:33:42

but well-serviced town with all the essential shops and amenities.

0:33:420:33:46

The next property is set in a centuries-old olive grove

0:33:460:33:50

that covers around three acres.

0:33:500:33:52

And when it comes to the design, we're sticking to the regional style

0:33:520:33:56

but this time with a twist.

0:33:560:33:58

So you may have gathered, there is a little bit of a theme

0:33:580:34:00

going on with your house hunt here in Puglia, isn't there?

0:34:000:34:03

Another lovely trulli.

0:34:030:34:05

Now, this one is a little bit different

0:34:050:34:07

because it is not one but there's two properties.

0:34:070:34:12

Oh, wow.

0:34:120:34:13

There are two properties, but I don't want to confuse you too much.

0:34:130:34:16

So this is the one that we're looking at, but we

0:34:160:34:18

will cast our eye on the other one, because that is for sale as well.

0:34:180:34:22

-Really?

-Yes.

0:34:220:34:24

-Interesting.

-Stunning.

0:34:240:34:26

-Yeah.

-Just take a look around us, just in this garden alone.

0:34:260:34:30

You're not going to have blood in your veins, you're going

0:34:300:34:33

to have olive oil if you buy this property.

0:34:330:34:35

-Shall we start the tour?

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:34:350:34:37

This delightful trulli was renovated around seven years ago using

0:34:370:34:42

traditional methods to retain its rustic and authentic look.

0:34:420:34:45

Nestled against a striking olive green backdrop,

0:34:450:34:49

the original limestone walls are fitted with handmade windows,

0:34:490:34:52

shutters and inviting front door.

0:34:520:34:55

Welcome to your trullo house.

0:34:550:34:58

-This is very twee, isn't it? Very cute.

-It is, isn't it? It is.

0:34:580:35:02

We all did the same thing as we stepped through the door -

0:35:020:35:04

we looked up.

0:35:040:35:06

-Yeah.

-Because you just do, don't you?

0:35:060:35:09

You can't help it, actually.

0:35:090:35:10

If you had a cat, you couldn't swing it, could you?

0:35:100:35:13

JULIE LAUGHS

0:35:130:35:15

-Intimate?

-Yes, very.

-Cosy.

-Cosy...

0:35:150:35:19

-Thinking of all of those words apart from small.

-Small, yeah.

0:35:190:35:23

-However, it is not lacking in character and style...

-No.

0:35:250:35:28

..as you will see as we continue, she says hopefully.

0:35:280:35:30

Yeah.

0:35:300:35:32

-Because this, actually, is rather large in comparison.

-Oh, wow.

0:35:350:35:40

-Actually, it is.

-This is lovely. This is amazing.

-Yeah.

0:35:400:35:43

Actually, it is a nice kitchen. Yeah, very nice.

0:35:430:35:46

-I like this a lot.

-You've got a bathroom behind you.

-Oh, yeah.

0:35:460:35:50

-All right.

-A beautiful walk-in shower, to be fair.

0:35:500:35:54

All tiled, all done. You've got a bedroom here.

0:35:540:35:57

That could be your hobby room.

0:35:570:35:58

That could be a very small sitting room, if you wanted to.

0:35:580:36:01

-Because this property has three bedrooms.

-Oh, wow.

0:36:010:36:05

So let's look at the master.

0:36:050:36:07

-Oh, gosh, this is a good size.

-Oh, yeah. I like the sloping ceilings.

0:36:110:36:16

-Yeah.

-Yeah. That's different.

0:36:160:36:17

Actually, we are quite surprised that it is so big.

0:36:170:36:20

Yeah, I like it.

0:36:200:36:21

The other one is a good size as well, just across the corridor.

0:36:210:36:25

-You also have the master en-suite.

-Excellent.

0:36:250:36:28

Again, beautifully tiled throughout.

0:36:280:36:30

It wouldn't need anything doing to it.

0:36:300:36:32

So although this house was converted in 2007,

0:36:320:36:35

it does look like it is a brand-new conversion.

0:36:350:36:37

-It does, yeah.

-I must admit, it does.

0:36:370:36:39

-So, do you love it?

-I do. I am warming.

0:36:390:36:42

As we are moving in, I am warming to it.

0:36:420:36:46

The initial bit, when you walk into the front door, you think,

0:36:460:36:49

"Oh, blimey, this is a bit bijou."

0:36:490:36:51

-We are trying to avoid the SMALL word.

-Yeah.

0:36:510:36:53

And then you think the rest of the house is going to be like that,

0:36:530:36:57

-you know.

-And it's not.

-No.

0:36:570:36:59

This house may be full surprises, but it is not alone.

0:36:590:37:03

Outside, the property comes with a huge swimming pool

0:37:030:37:06

and its share of the land that equates to about an acre.

0:37:060:37:09

The other two acres belong to its neighbour at the far

0:37:090:37:12

end of the drive, which is equally eye-catching and enchanting.

0:37:120:37:16

This is lovely, absolutely beautiful.

0:37:160:37:19

Look at this.

0:37:190:37:20

Oh, wow.

0:37:210:37:22

So...

0:37:250:37:27

-Your second trullo.

-I think this is nicer, actually.

0:37:270:37:30

-Yeah, I love this entrance.

-Yeah.

-This, a little bit more generous.

0:37:300:37:34

-Yeah.

-Which isn't a bad thing.

-No.

0:37:340:37:36

But basically, the layout for the rest of the property is the same.

0:37:360:37:40

The only difference is, you have actually got archways through here.

0:37:400:37:43

-It has got, I would say, more character.

-I like that.

-Yeah, I do.

0:37:430:37:45

Immediate reaction, more character.

0:37:450:37:47

Like its neighbour, this striking trulli also has three bedrooms -

0:37:470:37:52

a small single and a spacious twin room,

0:37:520:37:54

which are both served by a good-sized tiled shower room,

0:37:540:37:58

then there is another bright

0:37:580:37:59

and sunny double that comes complete with an en-suite.

0:37:590:38:02

-I prefer this one, to be honest.

-Do you?

-Because of the size. Yeah.

0:38:020:38:05

Oh, interesting.

0:38:050:38:07

I'm not going to give too much away

0:38:070:38:09

cos we're going to head back outside.

0:38:090:38:11

Malcolm, if you wouldn't mind...

0:38:110:38:13

As we are out of season here in Puglia,

0:38:150:38:17

the night is creeping up on us again,

0:38:170:38:19

but we still need to talk money back at the first trulli conversion,

0:38:190:38:23

which is the one we had earmarked for our couple.

0:38:230:38:26

So let's see if we can guess the price for this property.

0:38:260:38:29

Now, this one comes with the pool and about an acre of land.

0:38:290:38:34

I think it is probably on the money, at 280.

0:38:340:38:37

I thought... About 290, 300, I was thinking.

0:38:370:38:40

This is where I get really excited.

0:38:400:38:42

Because it is way under.

0:38:430:38:46

-Oh, wow.

-Yeah.

0:38:460:38:47

Asking price - £200,000.

0:38:470:38:51

-Really?

-This property, this part of the land and the pool.

0:38:510:38:56

-Oh, my God!

-Now, I'm going to add one more thing to the mix.

0:38:560:39:01

I know you didn't come out here wanting to have a rental

0:39:010:39:04

property, however if you buy both of them together,

0:39:040:39:09

you get in total three acres of land, you get a revenue of roughly

0:39:090:39:13

£20,000 a year on that property, and you can buy them both

0:39:130:39:18

for £320,000.

0:39:180:39:21

Oh, my God.

0:39:210:39:22

Have another look around.

0:39:230:39:25

-Be careful, because it is now rather dark.

-OK.

0:39:250:39:27

-And then we'll leave when you're ready.

-Brilliant.

-Go on. Thank you.

0:39:270:39:31

OK.

0:39:310:39:33

-No tripping up now.

-No, no, try not.

0:39:340:39:36

Well, this Puglian proposition has certainly given

0:39:400:39:43

Julie and Malcolm food for thought.

0:39:430:39:45

Here they have the choice of one property £80,000

0:39:450:39:48

under their budget or two for £40,000 over.

0:39:480:39:52

But they could make that back in a few years

0:39:520:39:55

and then have a nice little annual earner on their hands.

0:39:550:39:58

Both trulli come with wonderful original features

0:39:580:40:01

and three bedrooms each,

0:40:010:40:03

one which could become Malcolm's art room.

0:40:030:40:05

And whichever way they buy, they'd have beautiful grounds

0:40:050:40:08

ideal for gardening as well as their dogs,

0:40:080:40:11

plus a fantastic pool too.

0:40:110:40:13

That does surprise me that there's two on offer here,

0:40:130:40:16

and the swimming pool, which is great.

0:40:160:40:18

And for the potential of a business of B&B,

0:40:180:40:21

which is something we never actually thought about.

0:40:210:40:24

There are cute. They are cute.

0:40:240:40:26

I feel they are a bit too small to actually live in. So...

0:40:260:40:30

That is my personal opinion, anyway.

0:40:300:40:32

Seeing the trullis now has become quite infectious.

0:40:320:40:36

I'm actually beginning to sort of fall in love with them

0:40:360:40:38

in a way that I didn't expect to.

0:40:380:40:40

They've got something quite magical about them.

0:40:400:40:42

But I hope tomorrow we will see something completely different.

0:40:420:40:46

Please!

0:40:460:40:48

Now, I am trulli'd out.

0:40:480:40:50

I am.

0:40:500:40:51

-How are we?

-Well.

-Very impressed.

-Yeah?

-Wonderful.

0:40:530:40:56

Well, the sun has definitely set. It is pitch-black.

0:40:560:41:00

-You can tell we are in the country, can't you?

-Yes.

0:41:000:41:02

-Have you seen enough, though?

-Yes.

-In all seriousness.

-We have.

-Has he?

0:41:020:41:06

-Very, very.

-Oh, you two have so much to think and talk about, don't you?

0:41:060:41:09

I know. I don't even know where to start.

0:41:090:41:11

-I'm going to take you home now, come on.

-OK.

0:41:110:41:14

It is the final day of house hunting in Italy, where we are helping

0:41:200:41:23

Kent-based couple Malcolm

0:41:230:41:25

and Julie find their own little patch of Puglia

0:41:250:41:28

on a £280,000 budget.

0:41:280:41:31

They are staying in an apartment within the historic

0:41:310:41:33

walls of Cisternino,

0:41:330:41:35

where they are starting their day with breakfast on the balcony

0:41:350:41:38

whilst practising their language skills.

0:41:380:41:40

How do you say... "How are you?"

0:41:400:41:43

-Come sar?

-Come sta?

-Come sta?

0:41:430:41:46

And...

0:41:460:41:48

"Very well."

0:41:480:41:49

Sto bene.

0:41:490:41:51

Oh, that's right, yeah. Yeah.

0:41:510:41:53

-It's quiet, isn't it?

-Very quiet. I was surprised at that.

0:41:530:41:56

-The locals are nice, though.

-Lots of help. Thank goodness.

0:41:560:42:00

I don't think I'd have been able to find the wine shop.

0:42:000:42:03

-Does this compare to your expectations, like, in Tuscany?

-No.

0:42:040:42:08

-No?

-No.

0:42:080:42:10

-It's very different.

-Mm-hm.

0:42:100:42:12

Seems like Malcolm is developing reservations about Puglia.

0:42:120:42:16

Perhaps some retail therapy will help.

0:42:160:42:19

Well, this is interesting.

0:42:200:42:22

-Mind if I went and had a look?

-No, go and look.

0:42:220:42:25

Bongiorno.

0:42:260:42:28

Bongiorno.

0:42:280:42:29

-See that bag?

-Oh, right. Ask to have a look at it.

-Signora.

0:42:290:42:33

E possibile vedere?

0:42:330:42:35

Grazie mille.

0:42:350:42:36

Oh, grazie.

0:42:420:42:44

-Yeah, I like that. This is ostrich, isn't it?

-Hmm, yeah.

-Yeah, get it.

0:42:440:42:48

Grazie, signora.

0:42:480:42:50

So we're drawing to the end of our property search here in Puglia,

0:42:550:42:59

but I am getting the impression that Malcolm isn't TRULLI

0:42:590:43:02

sold on moving to Italy.

0:43:020:43:05

But we are not giving up yet

0:43:050:43:06

because we still have the mystery house up our sleeve,

0:43:060:43:10

and I'm hoping that this property is the one that convinces them both.

0:43:100:43:14

The search for our final home takes us closest to the water's edge,

0:43:160:43:20

around five miles from the coastal town of Monopoli.

0:43:200:43:23

The historic centre of Monopoli has the feel of a cosmopolitan city

0:43:230:43:27

and is a lively and energetic place throughout the year.

0:43:270:43:31

In amongst its fascinating architecture is a baroque

0:43:310:43:34

cathedral as well as all the shops, bars and restaurants you could want.

0:43:340:43:38

But hidden away high in the hills and looking out towards the sea

0:43:380:43:42

over acres of olive trees is the property we've saved until last.

0:43:420:43:46

So, our final offering, of course, it is the mystery house.

0:43:460:43:51

Any ideas why?

0:43:510:43:52

-Well, it is a mystery because it is not a trulli.

-Ta-da!

0:43:520:43:56

-Malcolm, you got it in one. It is actually an old farmhouse.

-Oh, wow.

0:43:560:44:01

-Wow.

-It dates back to around 1817.

0:44:010:44:04

But you will be pleased to know it has been renovated in the '90s.

0:44:040:44:08

-It looks all right, doesn't it?

-Yeah, excellent.

-Shall we?

-Yes, please.

0:44:080:44:12

-For the final time?

-Yes.

-Come on.

0:44:120:44:15

This converted farmhouse may look very different to our first

0:44:150:44:19

three trulli properties, but at 200 years old, it is

0:44:190:44:23

still full of features and charm.

0:44:230:44:25

And we're starting off our tour in the kitchen.

0:44:250:44:28

-Bijou.

-Yes.

0:44:280:44:31

-Yeah, it is.

-Not huge. Probably a standard size.

0:44:310:44:34

-For an Italian kitchen, yeah.

-I just want to point this out for you.

0:44:340:44:37

-You have got like a larder here.

-Oh, I see.

0:44:370:44:40

-But also steps leading up to the roof terrace.

-Oh, right.

0:44:400:44:43

-A secret entrance.

-Oh, intriguing.

-Yeah.

0:44:430:44:46

So you can prepare the food and then straight upstairs to enjoy

0:44:460:44:51

the sunset with a little cheeky glass of something in the evenings.

0:44:510:44:54

No, we don't do things like that(!)

0:44:540:44:56

That has made us all smile, so we'll continue.

0:44:560:44:59

Here is your sitting room.

0:45:020:45:04

Now that's more like it. I like this.

0:45:050:45:08

-Do you?

-Mm-hm.

-Is this more you, do you think, Malcolm?

-I think so.

0:45:080:45:11

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:45:110:45:13

-Oh, he hasn't done that before.

-No, he hasn't.

-Gosh, no.

0:45:150:45:17

No, we haven't had a stroking wall moment.

0:45:170:45:19

We haven't had a stroking wall.

0:45:190:45:21

-That's a good sign, Julie.

-It is. He has made contact.

-Yeah.

0:45:210:45:24

-He is connecting.

-No, I love it. I really do.

-Excellent.

0:45:240:45:27

It has got a nice feel as soon as you walk in, actually.

0:45:270:45:30

Well, I hope this continues as we go through.

0:45:300:45:33

I'm pleased to say that this spacious home has definitely

0:45:330:45:36

awoken something in Malcolm.

0:45:360:45:38

The stone floor is a feature throughout the house,

0:45:380:45:40

where everything is on ground level.

0:45:400:45:42

The accommodation also includes a study area,

0:45:420:45:45

a large, fully-tiled family bathroom and three bedrooms,

0:45:450:45:49

including a bright twin, a good-sized double

0:45:490:45:52

and the one that could be for Julie and Malcolm.

0:45:520:45:56

-This is the master. Complete with dressing room next door.

-Oh, wow.

0:45:560:46:01

-And en-suite.

-Oh, fantastic.

0:46:010:46:05

-So, Julie's all right. What about you, Malcolm?

-I like this.

0:46:050:46:08

And then in the winter, you have got a little fireplace.

0:46:080:46:11

-It actually works?

-Yes.

0:46:110:46:12

-This is amazing. A complete shock.

-Excellent.

-Exciting.

0:46:120:46:16

You've done well.

0:46:160:46:17

-Shall we head outside?

-OK.

0:46:190:46:22

There is around half an acre of grounds that come with our mystery

0:46:220:46:25

house, and the best way to see them in all their glory is from above.

0:46:250:46:29

So we have come up to the roof terrace with some serious views.

0:46:290:46:33

So we have to finish the tour up here, don't we?

0:46:330:46:38

Now, look at this as a roof terrace.

0:46:390:46:42

And just take a look.

0:46:420:46:44

-Julie, Malcolm, over there.

-The sea.

-Oh, my goodness!

-Look at that.

0:46:440:46:48

-That is amazing.

-Look at that.

-That is beautiful. Beautiful.

0:46:480:46:53

You have got your own olive grove.

0:46:530:46:55

And if that wasn't enough, a large pool, plus, separate from this

0:46:550:47:01

building, you can just see the roof, is a storage room.

0:47:010:47:04

It's rather large. Malcolm, I'm thinking art workshop?

0:47:040:47:09

Workshop for art...

0:47:090:47:11

So, I wonder what is going through your mind,

0:47:110:47:13

because I have got to ask you,

0:47:130:47:14

what is the asking price on this property?

0:47:140:47:16

-It has got to be...

-I think it is 350.

0:47:160:47:18

-At least 350.

-I am with you on that.

-Yeah.

0:47:200:47:22

Well, you are out by £4,000.

0:47:220:47:25

-The asking price is £346,000.

-Right.

0:47:250:47:30

-I thought it would be.

-I thought it would be, yeah. I did.

-However...

0:47:310:47:35

We couldn't do that to you, could we?

0:47:350:47:38

We have spoken to the owners and they are aware of your top budget.

0:47:380:47:42

They will accept...

0:47:420:47:44

£278,000.

0:47:440:47:46

-Oh, my God!

-Really?

-A smidge under the top of your budget.

0:47:460:47:50

JULIE LAUGHS

0:47:500:47:52

-Don't get too excited.

-Why not?

0:47:520:47:56

-So have another look.

-We will, yeah.

-Wander around.

-Another talk.

0:47:560:47:59

-Have a talk. Be my guest. And I will see you a bit later.

-OK. Thanks.

0:47:590:48:04

This former farmhouse may be on the market at £66,000 over Julie

0:48:070:48:11

and Malcolm's budget, but the owner is willing to accept

0:48:110:48:14

£2,000 under it.

0:48:140:48:17

The house has three bedrooms as well as an outhouse

0:48:170:48:20

that could be a studio for Malcolm.

0:48:200:48:22

There's also a half-acre garden that features a swimming pool,

0:48:220:48:25

and not forgetting an enormous roof terrace with panoramic

0:48:250:48:28

views to the coast.

0:48:280:48:30

Although we had sort of fallen in love with the trullis,

0:48:300:48:33

or I had fallen in love with the trullis, this really

0:48:330:48:36

just had the wow factor.

0:48:360:48:38

The land, the house, the whole layout. Just amazing, really.

0:48:380:48:43

Bit by bit, I felt myself growing into it.

0:48:430:48:45

Every room I felt I could live in.

0:48:450:48:48

My head is now spinning.

0:48:480:48:50

I wasn't expecting anything like this.

0:48:500:48:52

Well, you know, from what we have seen,

0:48:520:48:55

I was expecting another trulli. HE SNIGGERS

0:48:550:48:58

Now, am looking forward to seeing your faces.

0:49:000:49:03

Cos hopefully I am going to try to read you.

0:49:030:49:05

-A successful second viewing on your own this time?

-Yes.

0:49:050:49:08

-It's beautiful.

-Yes.

-Cos that's it.

-I know.

-The final house.

0:49:080:49:13

So let's go somewhere. You two need a bit of time together,

0:49:130:49:16

collect your thoughts,

0:49:160:49:18

and then we're going to find out what your next move is going to be.

0:49:180:49:21

-Is it going to be out here? That is the question.

-That is the question.

0:49:210:49:24

-Come on, we're going to hit the road.

-Lovely.

0:49:240:49:27

In Cilento, to the south of Puglia, sits the city of Lecce,

0:49:370:49:40

famed for its stunning baroque limestone architecture.

0:49:400:49:44

I have come to meet Cinzia Rascazzo here at the Palazzo dei Celestini.

0:49:440:49:50

Cinzia is a certified olive oil taster

0:49:500:49:52

and has kindly agreed to give me a whistle-stop tour to demonstrate

0:49:520:49:56

why olives are the centuries-old jewel in Puglia's crown.

0:49:560:50:00

When you turn around and admire these buildings, the one

0:50:000:50:03

thing it speaks to me of is wealth, serious wealth over the centuries.

0:50:030:50:07

-Is that right?

-Yes.

0:50:070:50:09

You are totally right.

0:50:090:50:10

During the 1600s, the 1700s,

0:50:100:50:12

until 1800s, here it was a super wealthy area.

0:50:120:50:17

But where did it come from?

0:50:170:50:19

-All this money was coming from olive oil.

-Olive oil?

-Yes.

0:50:190:50:24

But at that time, olive oil was not used for food,

0:50:240:50:27

so we were making lamp olive oil.

0:50:270:50:30

-So it was fuel.

-Yes.

0:50:300:50:32

Before petroleum was discovered, olive oil was the way

0:50:320:50:37

we were lighting the streets all over Europe.

0:50:370:50:40

So both the Church people

0:50:400:50:41

and the noble people were making all this money thanks to the olive oil.

0:50:410:50:46

From the end of the 16th century,

0:50:460:50:48

Puglian olive oil was made in limestone caves using stone presses.

0:50:480:50:53

Many have been preserved, including this one in Vernole.

0:50:530:50:57

These old stone steps are leading us around four metres below ground,

0:50:570:51:01

where the ancient presses are still intact.

0:51:010:51:03

To produce olive for fuel, un-ripened olives were used,

0:51:040:51:08

which were left to ferment before they were pressed,

0:51:080:51:10

a process that took around six months and gave the oil

0:51:100:51:14

a high acidity level, which was perfect for burning.

0:51:140:51:17

So how many people would be working here underground at one time?

0:51:170:51:21

So there were about eight to nine workers and two donkeys.

0:51:210:51:25

But there were people here living for six months.

0:51:250:51:29

They were not allowed to leave because olives were like gold,

0:51:290:51:33

so the owner of this place was afraid

0:51:330:51:35

that they would steal the olives.

0:51:350:51:37

It must have had a few huge effect on the region, on its wealth,

0:51:370:51:40

when suddenly, in the, what, 18th,

0:51:400:51:42

19th century a different fuel source is discovered.

0:51:420:51:46

Now olive oil is used as a food condiment.

0:51:460:51:49

We are still a big producer of olive oil.

0:51:490:51:52

Puglia produces a hefty 40% of Italy's olive oil,

0:51:520:51:56

around 200,000 tonnes a year.

0:51:560:52:00

We have come to an olive grove in the Vernole countryside to see

0:52:000:52:03

where the region's liquid gold stems from.

0:52:030:52:06

Now, this is a remarkable olive tree.

0:52:060:52:09

-I don't think I've ever seen one quite so wide.

-Yes.

0:52:090:52:13

This is 2,075 years old.

0:52:130:52:18

-And it is still producing olives?

-It is.

0:52:180:52:21

It is still producing olives.

0:52:210:52:23

Why is the oil here so special?

0:52:230:52:26

First, look at how much space there is between trees,

0:52:260:52:30

so the roots, they grow horizontally and they can get enough nutrients.

0:52:300:52:35

Then just look at the age of our trees.

0:52:350:52:38

So they have had centuries to get adjusted to our climate.

0:52:380:52:43

Aren't olive trees indigenous to Italy?

0:52:430:52:45

Because you do see them everywhere.

0:52:450:52:48

Actually, olive tree was brought here by the Greeks.

0:52:480:52:52

When the Greeks arrived, more than 2,000 years ago, they brought

0:52:520:52:55

the olive tree and we still have some of the trees they brought.

0:52:550:52:59

The same trees may have been around for millennia,

0:52:590:53:02

but the process of extracting the olive oil from them has

0:53:020:53:05

changed dramatically over the years.

0:53:050:53:07

Today, of course, the olives are pressed by machinery.

0:53:070:53:11

And Cinzia has brought me to a factory

0:53:110:53:13

so I can experience this local delicacy myself.

0:53:130:53:16

We are having it with frizelle,

0:53:170:53:19

a special kind of bread that the underground workers

0:53:190:53:21

would have eaten with their olive oil all those years ago.

0:53:210:53:25

So, the difference between this bread and regular bread

0:53:250:53:28

is that this has been baked twice, so this is very dry

0:53:280:53:32

and it lasts for a year.

0:53:320:53:34

-But how does it taste?

-Fantastic. Let's prepare it first.

-OK.

0:53:340:53:37

The bread is dipped in water and topped with tomatoes

0:53:370:53:41

and wild oregano.

0:53:410:53:43

And then the secret - extra virgin olive oil.

0:53:430:53:46

So this is very peppery.

0:53:470:53:50

Very intense.

0:53:500:53:52

Here we go.

0:53:540:53:56

That is good. And can I just say?

0:54:010:54:04

I know I shouldn't speak with my mouth full, but you'd

0:54:040:54:06

never think that bread was a year old with that olive oil on it.

0:54:060:54:09

Buonissimo, Nicki.

0:54:090:54:11

-Buonissimo.

-CINZIA GIGGLES

0:54:110:54:14

-Thank you so much.

-You're very welcome.

0:54:140:54:17

I've just sampled a real taste of Puglia.

0:54:170:54:21

And it is incredible that what was once considered fuel is now

0:54:210:54:24

a staple in kitchens throughout the world.

0:54:240:54:27

Back in Cisternino, whilst our buyers Malcolm

0:54:320:54:35

and Julie are getting ready to leave,

0:54:350:54:36

they are also reflecting on their very first experience in Puglia.

0:54:360:54:40

-We need to check all the cupboards. Just get your stuff out.

-Oh, right.

0:54:400:54:45

Hang on.

0:54:450:54:46

I just can't believe we are off again now and back home.

0:54:460:54:51

-We have got so much to think about now.

-I know.

0:54:510:54:54

I don't know about you, but I am a bit confused.

0:54:540:54:57

When we first came here, I loved those old trullis, but...

0:54:570:55:00

I know you did.

0:55:000:55:02

-I must admit...

-To live in, it just wouldn't work. Not for us, anyway.

0:55:020:55:06

It has made me think twice.

0:55:060:55:07

-I think we're about done now, my darling.

-OK.

0:55:070:55:10

See if you can get it zipped up.

0:55:100:55:11

OK, pull it round.

0:55:120:55:14

Having shown Malcolm and Julie our properties here in Puglia,

0:55:160:55:19

I'm not sure just how committed they are to living abroad.

0:55:190:55:23

Perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps they will surprise me. Let's ask them.

0:55:230:55:28

Find out.

0:55:280:55:29

So, Julie and Malcolm, at the beginning of the week,

0:55:350:55:38

it was your first time in Puglia, everything was new,

0:55:380:55:41

everything was fresh, everything was very exciting,

0:55:410:55:44

but I wonder how we have got on when it comes to finding you a new home.

0:55:440:55:49

-I still prefer Tuscany.

-Do you?

-Yep.

0:55:490:55:52

It wasn't what I was expecting. The olive trees.

0:55:520:55:56

I mean, there are millions of them, you know.

0:55:560:55:58

It does take to you, they are lovely, but there is a lot of them.

0:55:580:56:03

-Reputedly, 63 million.

-Yeah.

0:56:030:56:06

-That's a lot of trees.

-That doesn't surprise me.

0:56:060:56:08

Let me ask you a question,

0:56:080:56:09

was Tuscany a holiday or was it a proper house search?

0:56:090:56:13

It was a holiday.

0:56:130:56:14

I just think this whole sort of venture really has

0:56:140:56:18

opened my eyes up to a lot of things.

0:56:180:56:20

It has made me even question about what we are actually doing,

0:56:200:56:22

is it what we really want?

0:56:220:56:24

-Has the region won you over?

-To some degree.

0:56:240:56:27

I'd have to come back and feel it again

0:56:270:56:29

and have a longer time to experience it

0:56:290:56:31

rather than coming out for the typical, you know, 14-day holiday.

0:56:310:56:35

And perhaps come back and actually rent somewhere long-term

0:56:350:56:38

in different areas again

0:56:380:56:40

but actually sort of almost like pretend we're living here

0:56:400:56:44

and try it out for real.

0:56:440:56:46

And bring the dogs with us so that we can really, really try it out.

0:56:460:56:50

-Yeah.

-Before we make that final setting down our roots.

0:56:500:56:52

That's probably what we're frightened of.

0:56:520:56:54

That was our original plan.

0:56:540:56:55

-That was.

-That was the one thing I was going to say, cos I don't

0:56:550:56:59

think in your head you've decided 100% that you want to live abroad.

0:56:590:57:04

And once you get that, then hopefully,

0:57:040:57:07

-the rest will fall into place.

-We know we want to move.

0:57:070:57:10

We know who want to change.

0:57:100:57:12

I think it is because we haven't done it for so long now.

0:57:120:57:15

I mean, we've lived in our current house now for over 20 years,

0:57:150:57:17

which we adore.

0:57:170:57:18

But there is something in us that is giving us itchy feet.

0:57:180:57:21

And it's how that translates now, I just don't know.

0:57:210:57:24

Well, let us know how you get on.

0:57:240:57:25

I wonder, in 12 months' time, whether you're going to be

0:57:250:57:28

living in the coast, say near Bournemouth,

0:57:280:57:30

or whether you are going to be in Europe.

0:57:300:57:33

Sorry it hasn't quite hit the right notes.

0:57:330:57:35

-Trulli, it...

-Ooooh!

0:57:350:57:39

You had to get that in. Trulli obsessed.

0:57:390:57:42

Well I am TRULLI obsessed with the two of you. Thank you very much.

0:57:420:57:45

-Thank you.

-And you, Nicki, thank you.

0:57:450:57:47

Well, an interesting end to our time in Puglia, which, sadly,

0:57:530:57:58

as a region, isn't for Malcolm,

0:57:580:58:00

although I still think Julie has fallen in love not only

0:58:000:58:04

with his beautiful countryside but those famous trulli properties.

0:58:040:58:08

However, having said that, when I pushed our couple about their

0:58:080:58:11

commitment living abroad, they are not 100% committed.

0:58:110:58:16

Time will tell whether they remain in the UK, or will another

0:58:160:58:20

Italian region be enough to entice them to escape to the Continent?

0:58:200:58:24

We're just going to have to wait and see.

0:58:240:58:27

Bye for now.
