In 1940, this tiny island found itself at the centre

0:00:020:00:04

of a battle between Allied

0:00:040:00:05

and enemy forces for naval supremacy in the Mediterranean.

0:00:050:00:09

By 1942, it had become the most bombed place on Earth.

0:00:090:00:15

Find out which country I am in, in just a moment.

0:00:150:00:18

On today's house hunt, I employ my very subtle powers of persuasion.

0:00:370:00:41

You don't buy this house, I'm going to chop off your head,

0:00:410:00:44

how is that as a deal?

0:00:440:00:46

Throw a few curveballs...

0:00:460:00:48

You do make things difficult, don't you?

0:00:480:00:50

And deliver some crackers.

0:00:520:00:53

I think Johnny needs to get his chequebook out. I love this house.

0:00:530:00:56

Welcome to Escape To The Continent.

0:01:010:01:03

Now, this behind me is the capital city of Valletta, in Malta,

0:01:030:01:07

a small island that fell victim to intense

0:01:070:01:10

bombardment during the Second World War

0:01:100:01:12

due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean.

0:01:120:01:15

Now, during that war, Malta was hit by some 15,000 tonnes of bombs

0:01:150:01:21

and holds the record for the longest sustained attack,

0:01:210:01:24

which lasted 154 days.

0:01:240:01:27

But the population of some 270,000 people refused to surrender.

0:01:270:01:33

And as a reward, King George VI presented Malta and its residents

0:01:330:01:37

with Britain's highest civilian honour for bravery -

0:01:370:01:40

the George Cross.

0:01:400:01:42

Today, Malta still shows the scars of battle etched on its landscape.

0:01:420:01:47

But that doesn't detract from the natural beauty

0:01:470:01:50

and centuries of fascinating history that this country has to offer.

0:01:500:01:54

Just under a four-hour flight from the UK, Malta is

0:01:550:01:59

located 60 miles south of Sicily, in the middle of the Mediterranean,

0:01:590:02:03

between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

0:02:030:02:06

Its location between continents has seen it

0:02:080:02:10

occupied by everyone from the Greeks, Romans

0:02:100:02:13

and Arabs to, more recently, 150 years of British governance.

0:02:130:02:18

Malta gained independence in 1964 and is now part of the EU.

0:02:180:02:22

At just 122 square miles, Malta is smaller than the Isle of Wight.

0:02:240:02:28

But with nearly 422,000 residents, it is

0:02:280:02:31

one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

0:02:310:02:35

The capital city, Valletta, packed into less than a square mile,

0:02:350:02:39

is one of the most concentrated historic areas on the globe

0:02:390:02:43

and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

0:02:430:02:45

But it is not simply a historian's paradise.

0:02:450:02:48

Modern Valletta is a vibrant, busy city

0:02:480:02:51

great for shopping and socialising.

0:02:510:02:53

Overlooking the city is a hilltop battery of cannons,

0:02:530:02:56

which today draws in visitors with its daily mid-day gun salute.

0:02:560:03:00

Malta has no shortage of stunning scenery

0:03:020:03:05

with a coastline that varies from spectacular rugged cliffs

0:03:050:03:08

and natural rock formations to golden, sandy beaches.

0:03:080:03:13

With its rich history and culture, beautiful landscapes

0:03:130:03:16

and nearly year-round sunshine, it is clear to see why Brits

0:03:160:03:19

are drawn to this island and many choose to make Malta their home.

0:03:190:03:24

Malta is a small island with a high population density,

0:03:280:03:32

which means land is scarce.

0:03:320:03:34

So when it comes to property out here,

0:03:340:03:37

those of you with green fingers, be warned -

0:03:370:03:40

gardens are rare so come at a premium.

0:03:400:03:43

Waterfront homes in the north of the island command

0:03:430:03:46

some of the highest prices,

0:03:460:03:48

particularly in Sliema, St Julian's and Valletta.

0:03:480:03:51

So head south and you'll find the best property

0:03:510:03:55

bargains and a quieter, more rural way of life.

0:03:550:03:59

So what area is going to be right for today's buyers?

0:03:590:04:02

Well, let's meet them and find out.

0:04:020:04:04

Today's house hunters are Claire, John

0:04:040:04:07

and their 11-year-old son, Harry.

0:04:070:04:09

Claire is an NHS occupational therapist

0:04:090:04:11

and John works for a building company.

0:04:110:04:13

They met over 13 years ago.

0:04:130:04:16

-We met through our friend Justine, didn't we?

-Yeah, we sort of...

0:04:160:04:21

-We was in a bar, weren't we?

-A bar, yeah. And we went out for a drink.

0:04:210:04:25

-And that's it.

-That was it.

-One year and one day later we got married.

0:04:250:04:30

They had Harry, who is now 11.

0:04:300:04:32

And they all currently live in Buckinghamshire,

0:04:320:04:35

in an unusual house.

0:04:350:04:37

When you look at it from the outside, it looks very, very small.

0:04:370:04:40

As you walk through the front door and actually come into the house,

0:04:400:04:44

it is a little TARDIS, or should I say a large TARDIS,

0:04:440:04:47

spread over three floors. But there is somewhere better for us.

0:04:470:04:51

And hopefully, that will be Malta.

0:04:510:04:54

The idea of Malta as a place to move to came about after many

0:04:540:04:58

happy holidays on the island.

0:04:580:05:00

From the moment I first went to Malta six years ago,

0:05:020:05:04

I just completely fell in love with the culture, the history,

0:05:040:05:08

the people that live there.

0:05:080:05:11

You get nine months of sun. You know, the beaches.

0:05:110:05:14

The activities and sports for Harry.

0:05:140:05:17

And just the way... Family-orientated, they all are.

0:05:170:05:20

Yeah, just love it. Just love it there.

0:05:200:05:23

Millie, the dog, will be part of the move,

0:05:230:05:25

but Claire has two grown-up children who will be staying in the UK.

0:05:250:05:29

Unfortunately, George and Leah, our two older children, won't be

0:05:290:05:32

able to join us at the moment, with the commitments of work.

0:05:320:05:35

So that is going to be a real shock to the system,

0:05:350:05:37

not seeing them every day.

0:05:370:05:39

But they are really supportive, aren't they, George and Leah?

0:05:390:05:42

They're really supportive of us going,

0:05:420:05:44

which has made it a bit easier.

0:05:440:05:46

As Harry is 11 years old, the move involves not only finding

0:05:460:05:49

a property but also a good school for him to attend.

0:05:490:05:52

I think the only concern I have for Harry is probably schooling.

0:05:520:05:57

Just making sure that he is settled, that he is making friends

0:05:570:06:00

and getting the good education that he deserves.

0:06:000:06:03

I'm looking forward to moving to Malta because I can see my dad

0:06:030:06:08

more and we get to play together and we get to spend more time together.

0:06:080:06:13

I'm a better footballer than my dad

0:06:130:06:15

because I can do better skills than him.

0:06:150:06:18

And he is a better keeper than me.

0:06:180:06:20

With the sale of the UK home, John and Claire would have a

0:06:210:06:24

cushion of capital to tide them over until they find what work they can.

0:06:240:06:28

For John, a fundamental change in work life is

0:06:280:06:31

one of the driving factors.

0:06:310:06:33

You know, I don't want the rat race I have now -

0:06:330:06:36

getting up at 5.00 in the morning to be in the office by 7.00.

0:06:360:06:39

You know, I've been doing this for so long, I just feel it is time.

0:06:390:06:44

I've got people that I've met

0:06:440:06:46

and people that I know that have said that they have contacts over there.

0:06:460:06:50

Push comes to shove, I'll work behind the bar.

0:06:500:06:53

Harry has already sat an entrance exam for a school on the island,

0:06:530:06:57

and they are expecting the results soon.

0:06:570:07:00

Harry, going to senior school, it's that step up.

0:07:000:07:03

We had an offer on the house yesterday, I've accepted it.

0:07:030:07:06

If there has ever been a right time, it is now.

0:07:060:07:09

Yeah, well, my contract at work is also coming to an end.

0:07:090:07:12

-It just seems to be all falling into place.

-Yeah.

0:07:120:07:15

Better to regret something you have done than something you haven't.

0:07:150:07:18

Exactly.

0:07:180:07:19

Indeed. And I don't think this will be a regret.

0:07:190:07:22

Claire and John have only ever holidayed in Mellieha,

0:07:250:07:28

in the north of the island.

0:07:280:07:29

And this is where the school they applied to for Harry is situated.

0:07:290:07:33

But as Malta is so small,

0:07:330:07:35

they want to explore all options across the country.

0:07:350:07:38

So they are flexible about location, but what about the property itself?

0:07:380:07:41

With Harry being looked after by his elder sister in the UK, I am meeting

0:07:410:07:45

Claire and John near Valletta, to hear more about their plans.

0:07:450:07:48

Well, John and Claire, here we are in wonderful Malta.

0:07:480:07:52

In a way, I suppose, this feels like a second home to the two of you.

0:07:520:07:55

Absolutely, yeah. We have been coming here for...six years now?

0:07:550:07:58

-Yeah, six years.

-Six years we have been coming.

0:07:580:08:00

-So, as an island, it has really won you over.

-Yes, absolutely.

0:08:000:08:05

From the first year we came here, wasn't it?

0:08:050:08:07

-So, yes.

-What is the situation at home in the UK?

0:08:070:08:10

The house is sold

0:08:100:08:12

and we hopefully need to be out of there in four weeks.

0:08:120:08:16

-So time really is of the essence.

-Yes, absolutely, exactly.

0:08:160:08:19

So no pressure to find us a home.

0:08:190:08:23

So if we find you that perfect property that matches everything

0:08:230:08:27

that you and your son Harry wants, you're going to move straightaway?

0:08:270:08:31

Absolutely, we have to, yes. This is it.

0:08:310:08:33

My goodness. At the moment, you live in a property with

0:08:330:08:37

fields in the background, you've got a lovely garden...

0:08:370:08:40

I mean, have you thought what it is going to be like

0:08:400:08:42

when you move to Malta?

0:08:420:08:43

Because we are standing on an island that is very heavily populated.

0:08:430:08:47

-BOTH:

-Yes.

0:08:470:08:49

Yes, there is, but there are pockets that you can find that are quiet.

0:08:490:08:54

-We just want to be here.

-We are open to options, as they say.

-Are you?

0:08:540:08:58

-Yes.

-Do you think you are both quite flexible as a couple?

0:08:580:09:01

-Yes, definitely.

-Yeah, we agree on most things.

0:09:010:09:05

MENACINGLY: Don't we? THEY LAUGH

0:09:050:09:09

So what type of property then, ideally, are you looking for?

0:09:090:09:13

-I like a house with character, two to three bedrooms.

-Yep.

0:09:130:09:17

Possibly a nice courtyard. A rooftop.

0:09:170:09:21

And then we are open to anything.

0:09:210:09:24

Also, you can get lovely penthouses where you can get on the roofs

0:09:240:09:29

and have your barbecue on the roof.

0:09:290:09:31

You know, in the summer... Well, you could have one today, actually.

0:09:310:09:34

You could, actually. I know, it's pretty warm today, isn't it?

0:09:340:09:37

-So why don't you remind us of your budget?

-We have...

0:09:370:09:41

£200,000 plus your taxes.

0:09:410:09:44

Nervous about coming out?

0:09:440:09:47

-No, excited.

-Are you?

-And I want to do it. Let's do it.

0:09:470:09:50

We do have some splendid properties to show you. Ready to get going?

0:09:500:09:54

-Yes, absolutely.

-We are indeed.

-Come on then.

0:09:540:09:56

And we have picked out four properties, each of which

0:10:190:10:22

offer something distinct while remaining typically Maltese.

0:10:220:10:26

I'll be keeping the price tag of each secret till

0:10:260:10:29

the end of the house tours.

0:10:290:10:31

Our final offering will be a mystery house,

0:10:310:10:33

which today offers something of a millionaire lifestyle.

0:10:330:10:37

Claire and John may have been here six years on the trot on holiday,

0:10:370:10:41

but we'll immerse them in Maltese day-to-day life

0:10:410:10:44

to find out if this really is the place to begin a new life.

0:10:440:10:48

To kick off our Maltese house hunt, we are heading to Rabat,

0:10:560:10:59

a small town in the centre of the island.

0:10:590:11:02

It sprang up as a suburb to the ancient walled city of Mdina,

0:11:020:11:06

which was once the capital of Malta.

0:11:060:11:08

Outside the confines of the walls, Rabat is now much bigger than

0:11:080:11:12

the citadel and has a population of around 12,000.

0:11:120:11:16

There are historic sites to visit such as the Roman Villa,

0:11:160:11:19

now a museum of antiquities,

0:11:190:11:21

the 17th century St Paul's church and the Roman catacombs.

0:11:210:11:26

Rabat's narrow stone streets are filled with typical Maltese

0:11:260:11:29

houses, with their characteristic wooden balconies.

0:11:290:11:32

But it is also a modern place to live with all the conveniences.

0:11:320:11:36

We are sticking to the atmospheric alleyways for our first

0:11:360:11:40

Maltese offering. Just coming up here is our first house.

0:11:400:11:44

Fantastic, can't wait to see it.

0:11:440:11:47

If you look from the front, there is a plaque right at the top.

0:11:470:11:49

It was built in 1614.

0:11:490:11:52

Wow, that is amazing.

0:11:520:11:54

It is believed a rich family had it built for the local priest.

0:11:540:11:58

But obviously, since then, it has been a shop,

0:11:580:12:00

it has been part of the local community.

0:12:000:12:02

For being 400 years old,

0:12:020:12:04

-it certainly has a lot of character and charm.

-I can imagine. Fantastic.

0:12:040:12:09

-I can't wait to see inside.

-Let's see if you are won over.

-OK.

0:12:090:12:13

This historic property is what the Maltese refer

0:12:130:12:16

to as a house of character.

0:12:160:12:18

Spread vertically over four levels, this traditional town house

0:12:180:12:22

has been lovingly restored, keeping many original features.

0:12:220:12:25

And on the ground floor, is the living room.

0:12:250:12:28

-Wow, this is amazing.

-Wow.

-This is lovely.

-Very medieval.

0:12:280:12:31

-It is unusual, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is really.

-It is.

0:12:310:12:35

-Yeah.

-Very impressive.

-Exactly what I wanted.

-Is it?

-Yes.

0:12:350:12:38

Exactly what I wanted, so...

0:12:380:12:40

This is Maltese limestone,

0:12:400:12:41

-which, as you know, is everywhere around the island.

-Oh, yeah.

0:12:410:12:44

It's like stepping... Well, it is stepping back in time, isn't it?

0:12:440:12:48

-You can imagine how many people have come through that door.

-Yeah.

0:12:480:12:51

-Yeah, amazing.

-Absolutely.

0:12:510:12:54

-Yeah, impressed.

-Very impressed.

-Yeah?

0:12:540:12:57

A strong start. Let's continue.

0:12:570:13:01

Across the living room to the back of the house is

0:13:020:13:04

a kitchen that might not be the kind of family space Claire had in mind.

0:13:040:13:09

-Now, you do have to mind your head slightly as you walk through.

-OK.

0:13:090:13:13

-Oh, wow.

-Into our kitchen.

0:13:130:13:15

-Probably not the largest kitchen in the world.

-No.

0:13:150:13:19

But everything you need here.

0:13:190:13:22

Yeah. It's nice. I like it. It's cute.

0:13:220:13:24

It was actually fitted out not that long ago,

0:13:240:13:26

and I think it has been very cleverly designed.

0:13:260:13:29

You know, you've got the granite work surfaces,

0:13:290:13:31

and they are not the full width, they are half the width

0:13:310:13:34

so that you do have a little bit more space.

0:13:340:13:36

We are going to head upstairs now, so mind your head going out.

0:13:360:13:40

John, if you want to lead the way, thank you.

0:13:400:13:42

To allow for such a compact kitchen, there is

0:13:450:13:47

a separate utility room at the top of the house.

0:13:470:13:50

And through the kitchen window is a small courtyard.

0:13:500:13:53

Down in the basement is the third bedroom.

0:13:550:13:58

Once the cellar, this vaulted room is now a very generous double.

0:13:580:14:01

Up from the ground floor, on a half landing,

0:14:030:14:06

is a high-spec wet room put in five years ago

0:14:060:14:09

which serves the main bedroom that is just up a couple more steps.

0:14:090:14:12

-Oh, this is nice.

-Like being in the Tower of London, isn't it?

0:14:170:14:20

-Come on in.

-Oh, this is lovely.

0:14:200:14:21

-What did you just say, the Tower of London?

-Something like that, yeah.

0:14:210:14:24

Going back in time, so to speak.

0:14:240:14:26

If you don't buy this house, I'm going to chop off your head,

0:14:260:14:29

how is that as a deal?

0:14:290:14:30

I mean, it is stepping back in time. You are absolutely right.

0:14:300:14:33

And the way it's been so lovingly restored,

0:14:330:14:36

you get that character, that charm.

0:14:360:14:38

-It hasn't been stripped bare, it has been enhanced.

-Absolutely.

0:14:380:14:42

-So this town house has three bedrooms.

-Brilliant, fantastic.

0:14:420:14:46

All of them good sized. Now, how often can I say this?

0:14:460:14:49

-I can offer you also a birthing room.

-A birthing room?

-Yes.

0:14:490:14:54

A birthing room.

0:14:540:14:55

The ladies, apparently, used to come to the top of the house,

0:14:550:14:58

where it is cooler.

0:14:580:14:59

It has now been turned into a music room,

0:14:590:15:01

-but that is what was originally used for.

-Oh, right!

0:15:010:15:04

So it could be lovely for Harry as a separate little study area.

0:15:040:15:07

-Yeah, definitely, yeah.

-Very interesting.

0:15:070:15:11

Take a look behind those doors, see what you think.

0:15:110:15:14

OK.

0:15:140:15:15

-Oh, wow! This is amazing!

-Oh, yeah.

0:15:170:15:21

-So unexpected.

-Very different.

0:15:210:15:23

-This is brilliant.

-Yeah, very nice.

0:15:230:15:25

-Yeah. I love it.

-Yeah.

0:15:250:15:27

You could, if you wanted to, make it an en-suite.

0:15:270:15:30

-Yeah.

-Or you can have it as another room which is part of yours.

0:15:300:15:35

No, I like it as it is.

0:15:350:15:36

-So I take it, Claire, you are not going to change it, no?

-No.

0:15:360:15:39

-Walk-in wardrobe?

-Absolutely.

0:15:390:15:41

-You haven't even got a look in, have you, John?

-I never do.

-No.

0:15:410:15:45

-Right, we are going to keep on heading up.

-OK.

0:15:450:15:49

Coming from a three-storey house in the UK, the stairs,

0:15:490:15:52

thankfully, aren't proving an issue.

0:15:520:15:55

Now, mind your head here, Claire.

0:15:550:15:57

We are continuing up to the top floor.

0:15:570:16:01

Now, I think this is a climb worth making because...

0:16:010:16:04

you have your own roof terrace.

0:16:050:16:08

Wow, this is lovely.

0:16:080:16:10

-Can you imagine sitting out here, glass of wine in the evening?

-Yeah.

0:16:100:16:15

-Barbecue going on.

-Yes, I do like a barbie.

-Relaxing...

0:16:150:16:19

So what do you think? You haven't looked at any houses

0:16:190:16:22

here, it is only our first property.

0:16:220:16:24

-How close are we getting to what you want?

-Very close.

0:16:240:16:27

Yeah, Johnny needs to get his chequebook out. I love this house.

0:16:270:16:30

-It's lovely.

-Well, let's see if you can afford it, then.

0:16:300:16:33

You have got to work out how much you think it is on the market for.

0:16:330:16:37

OK. I think...I think about 170.

0:16:370:16:41

-Yeah, 170, 180.

-Go on, John, give me a figure.

0:16:410:16:45

-Which one?

-180.

0:16:450:16:48

You should have gone with 170 because you are the closest.

0:16:480:16:51

-It is a tad over £170,000.

-Really?

0:16:510:16:56

-Fantastic.

-OK.

0:16:570:16:59

So I think it is time for you two to explore on your own.

0:16:590:17:03

Don't forget the third bedroom down in the basement.

0:17:030:17:05

Take your time, I'll catch up with you when you're ready.

0:17:050:17:08

-Lovely, thank you.

-Thank you.

-Come on, then.

0:17:080:17:10

..and centuries of history in its walls.

0:17:270:17:30

-Mind your head, Johnny.

-Yeah.

0:17:300:17:31

Oh, this is lovely!

0:17:330:17:36

-This is really nice. You reckon this is Harry's room?

-Yeah.

0:17:360:17:40

What's behind...?

0:17:400:17:42

Oh, look, you have got a little shower room. That's amazing.

0:17:420:17:45

-Harry would love this.

-Yeah.

0:17:450:17:48

-He'd have his little den, so to speak.

-Yeah, absolutely.

0:17:480:17:52

I think of that house... I think it is absolutely lovely.

0:17:520:17:57

Everything we're looking for, really.

0:17:570:17:59

Yeah, I like that a lot as well. It is a beautiful place.

0:17:590:18:02

You know, the only fault I can see is going into the kitchen,

0:18:020:18:06

you know, having to duck your head every time.

0:18:060:18:08

But, you know, if you want something like this,

0:18:080:18:10

-I suppose you have got to...

-Adjust to it.

-Adjust, yeah.

0:18:100:18:13

It's 400 years of history. And it is beautiful.

0:18:130:18:16

It is a very, very good start. You know, you couldn't have...

0:18:160:18:20

Maybe you should have saved this one till last.

0:18:200:18:23

THEY LAUGH

0:18:230:18:25

-Hello.

-Hello.

-So, first experience of Maltese homes.

0:18:280:18:32

-Good? Thumbs-up?

-Very impressed, yes.

-Loved it.

0:18:320:18:35

You did seem to really, really warm to it as we were going around.

0:18:350:18:38

-Yeah.

-Definitely.

0:18:380:18:40

We have got more to show you, but first, we are

0:18:400:18:42

going to do something a little bit different.

0:18:420:18:44

Rather than take you back to the hotel...

0:18:440:18:46

We've got your bags in the car

0:18:460:18:47

because we got you a rental for the week.

0:18:470:18:49

-Wow.

-OK.

0:18:490:18:51

Somewhere quite interesting.

0:18:510:18:52

-Somewhere very stunning.

-Lovely.

0:18:520:18:54

-Shall we go and take a look?

-Absolutely.

-Come on, then.

0:18:540:18:57

Claire and John have holidayed in the resort towns of the island,

0:19:040:19:08

but to give them a more authentic Maltese experience,

0:19:080:19:11

we found them a place to stay in the ancient walled city of Mdina.

0:19:110:19:15

So it has taken us what,

0:19:160:19:18

-five minutes to get from Rabat to here, in Mdina?

-Yes.

0:19:180:19:20

And we're right in the heart of the city

0:19:200:19:22

because this is going to be your house for the week.

0:19:220:19:25

-How exciting.

-Lovely.

0:19:250:19:27

-So let me give you the keys.

-Thank you.

-Enjoy yourselves.

-Will do.

0:19:270:19:31

-I'll be back tomorrow to show you some more properties.

-Brilliant.

0:19:310:19:35

-But now the time is your own. Enjoy.

-Thank you.

-Thank you. Bye-bye.

0:19:350:19:39

-Let's see if there is a roof terrace.

-Good idea.

0:19:510:19:55

Look at this.

0:19:580:20:00

SHE CHUCKLES INCREDULOUSLY Yeah, this is lovely, eh?

0:20:000:20:03

The medieval town of Mdina has plenty of winding streets and

0:20:060:20:09

historic sites to explore, but it is also home to many souvenir shops.

0:20:090:20:14

To round off their day,

0:20:140:20:15

Claire and John go in search of a present to take back for Harry.

0:20:150:20:19

-These are really nice.

-Yeah, they are.

0:20:250:20:27

Harry would love these.

0:20:270:20:29

-What do you reckon, this one?

-Yeah.

0:20:290:20:32

-I think so.

-Yeah?

-Definitely.

-OK, let's get that one.

-Yeah.

0:20:320:20:36

-Yeah, definitely.

-Come on.

0:20:360:20:37

It is the start of our second day house hunting with Claire

0:20:460:20:49

and John from Buckinghamshire on the Mediterranean island of Malta, where

0:20:490:20:53

they are seeking a less hectic pace of life whilst continuing to work.

0:20:530:20:58

Malta does enjoy a lower cost of living than the UK, but

0:20:580:21:01

salaries here are also less,

0:21:010:21:03

with the average being around £17,000 a year.

0:21:030:21:06

Well, we've had a great start here in Malta with John and Claire.

0:21:080:21:12

And yesterday, our first property, they absolutely adored it.

0:21:120:21:16

Well, we gave them the night off last night.

0:21:160:21:18

They've had some time to think and to talk about it.

0:21:180:21:20

Let's see what they've got to say this morning.

0:21:200:21:23

-Good morning, sir!

-Good morning.

-How are you? Did you sleep well?

0:21:260:21:29

Very well, thank you.

0:21:290:21:31

I am hoping I have timed this right for a little spot of breakfast.

0:21:310:21:34

Yeah, come on in, we were having it on the rooftop.

0:21:340:21:36

Sounds divine.

0:21:360:21:38

-Oh, my word!

-Take a seat.

-It is beautiful up here!

0:21:420:21:46

-This is the perfect place to have breakfast.

-Oh, yes.

0:21:460:21:49

-It's not even the summer and it is so warm.

-It's lovely.

0:21:490:21:53

So you had last night on your own, time to reflect,

0:21:530:21:55

time to have a think. Did you venture out?

0:21:550:21:57

Yeah, we popped out for a little walk round Mdina.

0:21:570:22:01

Yeah, it was really lovely last night.

0:22:010:22:03

Does it feel different as an experience that you are actually

0:22:030:22:06

here, looking for your future home rather than you are here on holiday?

0:22:060:22:11

-Yeah, it does feel different.

-Does it?

-Totally.

0:22:110:22:14

You know, because you know that this is a really big step in your life.

0:22:140:22:18

And, you know, you only get one chance at something like this,

0:22:180:22:21

-and you have got to grab it with both hands.

-Yeah.

0:22:210:22:23

And it is not about going out, getting drunk and coming back

0:22:230:22:27

and getting up and then going on the beach kind of thing.

0:22:270:22:30

It's like working, really.

0:22:300:22:31

It is the reality, isn't it? It's kicking in.

0:22:310:22:34

Good news is we have got more to show you today.

0:22:340:22:36

-So shall we have a breakfast on the hoof, so to speak?

-Yes.

-Yes, great.

0:22:360:22:39

Let's go. I'm going to take the strawberry one, what do you reckon?

0:22:390:22:42

And me, and me.

0:22:420:22:43

Ladies...

0:22:450:22:46

For our next property, we are heading to the town of Sliema

0:22:540:22:57

on the eastern coast of Malta,

0:22:570:22:59

just across the water from the capital, Valletta.

0:22:590:23:02

Sliema began life as a fishing village, but it is now

0:23:020:23:05

arguably the island's main coastal resort and residential area.

0:23:050:23:10

Here, historic buildings rub shoulders with modern

0:23:110:23:14

apartment blocks.

0:23:140:23:16

It is a cosmopolitan place with many upmarket restaurants

0:23:160:23:19

and boutiques serving the growing population of 15,000.

0:23:190:23:24

The British influence is evident,

0:23:250:23:27

and it is where many expats settle.

0:23:270:23:29

But will it be where Claire and John want to settle?

0:23:290:23:33

The house I want to show them next is down the narrow inland

0:23:330:23:36

streets of the historic part of the town.

0:23:360:23:39

So...

0:23:390:23:41

-Time for our next poverty.

-Wow.

-Wow.

0:23:410:23:44

-That looks really good.

-Very Maltese.

-Yeah?

0:23:440:23:48

-Because that is what you are after in a way, isn't it?

-BOTH:

-Oh, yes.

0:23:480:23:52

One thing I want to point out before we step inside is

0:23:520:23:55

-the religious statue.

-Yeah.

0:23:550:23:58

It comes with the house. It is actually protected.

0:23:580:24:02

-Oh, that is brilliant.

-Yeah, that's fair enough.

-That's good.

0:24:020:24:04

-Shall we step inside?

-Yeah, let's do it.

0:24:040:24:07

This three-storey town house was built for a wealthy town dweller

0:24:070:24:11

100 years ago and has the traditional Maltese balcony.

0:24:110:24:15

Inside, it has got plenty of original character, too.

0:24:150:24:20

So... The door opens straight into the living room.

0:24:200:24:23

-Oh, this is nice.

-You can probably see, thick walls straightaway.

0:24:230:24:27

-Maltese limestone.

-It's nice, I like it.

-Yeah. Very impressed again.

0:24:270:24:32

-I like the beams.

-Yeah.

0:24:320:24:33

You certainly get a sense of space with this property.

0:24:330:24:36

We are going to walk straight through, into the kitchen.

0:24:360:24:40

So just there, you have got a small study,

0:24:400:24:43

-perfect for when Harry decides he wants to do his homework.

-Yes.

0:24:430:24:46

-Leads us into this.

-Oh, yeah, this is more like it.

-Yeah.

0:24:460:24:50

This is a bit of us, definitely.

0:24:500:24:52

Very happy.

0:24:520:24:53

-Are you happy?

-I am happy.

0:24:530:24:57

-This is what you call a kitchen.

-Yes.

-Or kitchen/diner, so to speak.

-Yeah.

0:24:570:25:01

No, this is more like it. This is what I was looking for.

0:25:010:25:04

Move around a bit more freely, can't you? In something like this.

0:25:040:25:07

-It's lovely.

-I take it that's a courtyard through there, is it?

0:25:070:25:11

It is. You have got your own courtyard.

0:25:110:25:13

-They really are hidden gems, these properties.

-Oh, indeed.

0:25:130:25:17

The staircase of this property is a pretty spectacular feature

0:25:180:25:21

and forms a spine up the centre of the house.

0:25:210:25:24

On this first floor, there is a bedroom to the front

0:25:240:25:26

of the property, with a traditional wooden balcony

0:25:260:25:29

overlooking the street.

0:25:290:25:30

But we are inspecting the bedroom at the rear.

0:25:300:25:33

So very ornate staircase, it's the original.

0:25:330:25:37

-And this would be your master bedroom.

-This is lovely.

0:25:370:25:39

-Yeah, it's very big.

-With your own en suite.

0:25:390:25:42

-Yeah, we don't have that at home, do we?

-No, we don't.

0:25:420:25:44

-So that is a nice bonus. Is that about a balcony?

-It is, yeah.

0:25:440:25:48

You have your own balcony.

0:25:480:25:50

-You can't get better than that.

-You are keen, aren't you, John?

0:25:500:25:52

-That is lovely.

-Go on, then. Have a little peak.

-Yeah? Do you mind?

-No.

0:25:520:25:56

No...

0:25:560:25:58

-Ha! This is amazing!

-Yeah, it's really good.

0:25:590:26:02

-Oh, this is very different.

-Look at that sun!

0:26:020:26:05

I can see us with a little cafe latte, a little espresso.

0:26:050:26:08

-An espresso in the morning, yeah. Absolutely.

-Croissants.

0:26:080:26:11

It's just beautiful.

0:26:110:26:12

Another flight of stairs -

0:26:120:26:14

you're going to be fit when you move out here -

0:26:140:26:16

-to the very top of the house.

-OK.

0:26:160:26:19

Up on the second floor is a further enormous bedroom.

0:26:190:26:23

And up from here is access to the roof.

0:26:230:26:26

You've got all this lovely space.

0:26:270:26:29

-You've also got a washroom in there, which is quite handy.

-OK.

-Lovely.

0:26:290:26:33

This washroom serves the top-floor bedroom

0:26:330:26:36

and, like most Maltese town houses, is where you will find the washing

0:26:360:26:39

machine, as it's on the roof where the washing tends to be hung.

0:26:390:26:43

See, I think, in a way, we saved the best till last,

0:26:460:26:49

-because I can't get enough of these roof terraces.

-No.

0:26:490:26:52

This is lovely. I really could see us here.

0:26:520:26:54

I think so, yeah.

0:26:540:26:56

-So what is the last thing we have to do?

-Price.

0:26:560:26:59

-So what are you thinking?

-I am thinking...

0:26:590:27:01

I am hoping 195.

0:27:010:27:04

OK.

0:27:040:27:05

I am thinking you have really thrown a curveball at me here,

0:27:050:27:09

so I think this one might be over budget.

0:27:090:27:13

225?

0:27:130:27:15

Your wife is very good at this,

0:27:150:27:18

-cos it is just under £196,000.

-SHE LAUGHS

0:27:180:27:23

Just under. So you are actually about £600 out, that's all.

0:27:230:27:26

-Wow.

-Under budget.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-You got excited yesterday.

0:27:260:27:30

In all honesty, how do you feel now, now that you know that price?

0:27:300:27:34

You know, I was just praying that it would be under budget.

0:27:340:27:37

-So I am well happy.

-Do take another look.

-Yeah, we will do.

0:27:370:27:40

-Take a look at those other bedrooms that you haven't seen as yet.

-OK.

0:27:400:27:43

-And I'm going to meet you right at the bottom.

-All right.

-Off you go.

0:27:430:27:46

-Wonderful. Thank you very much.

-Bye-bye.

0:27:460:27:48

I can't stop smiling

0:27:500:27:52

cos they've loved both of our properties.

0:27:520:27:54

But in my heart of hearts, I truly believe this gives them

0:27:540:27:59

everything as a family that they're looking for.

0:27:590:28:02

I love this house. Big wow factor for me is definitely the rooftop.

0:28:190:28:24

And also, I like the little terrace that we've got in our main bedroom.

0:28:240:28:27

Oh, yeah! Yes, of the master bedroom. Yes.

0:28:270:28:30

-It's lovely as well.

-Yeah, I didn't expect that.

0:28:300:28:32

Will you make me coffee every morning, Johnny?

0:28:320:28:35

Yeah, that's it, yeah.

0:28:350:28:36

-So two house tours done.

-Yep.

-Two great reactions.

-Yes.

-Smiling faces.

0:28:400:28:45

-Positivity. I'm loving Malta.

-I know, so are we.

0:28:450:28:49

-We are.

-We're getting close to finding you a home, I think.

0:28:490:28:52

-You are.

-I think so.

-Good.

0:28:520:28:54

Due to the UK's historic ties with Malta,

0:29:020:29:05

it has long been an easy place for Brits to move to.

0:29:050:29:08

Whilst the Maltese language, which is related to Arabic,

0:29:080:29:11

may be unfamiliar, their other official language is English.

0:29:110:29:15

They drive on the left,

0:29:150:29:16

and there are familiar touches of home everywhere.

0:29:160:29:19

Today, around 8,000 expats live in Malta.

0:29:190:29:23

But starting a new life anywhere can be nerve-racking, especially

0:29:230:29:27

if you have a child's education to consider.

0:29:270:29:29

I've arranged a harbour cruise with a family who might be able

0:29:290:29:33

to offer some words of advice. Can I introduce you?

0:29:330:29:36

We've got John, Julie and Kirstie. They have been here...

0:29:360:29:38

-How many years, Julie?

-Eight years.

-Eight years.

0:29:380:29:41

Obviously been a success cos you're still here, aren't you?

0:29:410:29:44

You've got a young family.

0:29:440:29:45

You've got Harry that you want to bring out.

0:29:450:29:47

They've actually experienced it with their three children.

0:29:470:29:50

It's hard to believe now because Kirstie is a teacher here.

0:29:500:29:53

Yes, yes, I am.

0:29:530:29:55

So I thought it might be quite nice... We've organized for you to

0:29:550:29:58

get out on a luzzu today. You can have a chat amongst yourselves.

0:29:580:30:01

I will leave you to it.

0:30:010:30:02

Get on board and I will catch you when you come off.

0:30:020:30:04

-Enjoy. Ask loads of questions.

-Will do.

0:30:040:30:07

John, who works in finance, was offered a job in Malta,

0:30:070:30:10

and the family moved within two months,

0:30:100:30:12

when the children were eight, 13 and 14.

0:30:120:30:15

They know life here well

0:30:150:30:17

and are taking John and Claire on a tour of the Grand Harbour.

0:30:170:30:20

Julie works as an English language teacher.

0:30:200:30:22

And daughter Kirstie is a primary school teacher.

0:30:220:30:25

So they also know a thing or two about the Maltese education system.

0:30:250:30:29

So, how is it emotionally with the children, bringing them over?

0:30:290:30:32

How did it...? Did it affect them at all?

0:30:320:30:34

We were a little bit worried about their reactions,

0:30:340:30:36

but when we finally got here, I think everybody was very pleased.

0:30:360:30:40

It was nerve-racking,

0:30:400:30:42

but then settled very easily and it is a great social life out here.

0:30:420:30:47

You are invited out straightaway to different things. It was wonderful.

0:30:470:30:52

I didn't have any problems at all settling.

0:30:520:30:55

So I think Harry, 11, he'll be absolutely fine, to be honest.

0:30:550:30:58

Yeah. And what was the school system like? Was it different from England?

0:30:580:31:02

The school system is different here. They do proper O-levels.

0:31:020:31:05

It is quite exam-orientated.

0:31:050:31:07

It's a bit more what we would call a traditional school.

0:31:070:31:12

It is back to basics.

0:31:120:31:14

-Yeah, they do seem as if they really push them hard, don't they?

-Yeah.

0:31:140:31:19

Yeah. It was definitely a challenge.

0:31:190:31:22

-We are coming into the harbour, and on that side, is Birgu.

-Birgu.

0:31:220:31:25

Or Vittoriosa. And there is a really nice set of pubs and bars

0:31:250:31:31

and restaurants just behind all the boats you can see in front of us.

0:31:310:31:34

It is one of the loveliest places to come to visit.

0:31:340:31:37

And some of the largest boats that visit the island dock here.

0:31:370:31:41

-That is so lovely.

-So you can see some real palaces here.

0:31:410:31:45

Getting Harry a good education is of the utmost importance,

0:31:480:31:52

but so too is finding work on the island.

0:31:520:31:55

I'm meeting them back on terra firma to discuss

0:31:550:31:58

the realities of living and working in Malta.

0:31:580:32:01

I suppose, in a way, it is a good time to get down

0:32:020:32:04

to the nitty-gritty, isn't it?

0:32:040:32:06

The practicalities of actually moving and work.

0:32:060:32:09

-BOTH: Yes.

-So what is employment like here in Malta?

0:32:090:32:11

-Is it easy to find a job?

-It should be.

0:32:110:32:13

Because the unemployment rate in Malta has been measured at one

0:32:130:32:16

of the lowest rates in the whole of the EU.

0:32:160:32:19

You know, what is the Maltese work ethic out here?

0:32:190:32:21

I think everybody here works quite hard.

0:32:210:32:24

-Most people have got two or three jobs.

-Really?!

0:32:240:32:26

-They do extra things in the evenings sometimes as well.

-Really?

0:32:260:32:29

-Especially in the summer months.

-Yeah.

-When the tourists are here.

0:32:290:32:32

That makes sense, yeah.

0:32:320:32:34

Are you quite flexible with what you are going to do

0:32:340:32:36

-when you move out here?

-Yeah, I am flexible.

0:32:360:32:38

You know, I may be in construction,

0:32:380:32:41

because there is a hell of a lot of work going on here.

0:32:410:32:44

You know, and I have been on the tours in the building industry.

0:32:440:32:48

The only problem with that area is you'll probably have to

0:32:480:32:50

-learn a little bit of Maltese.

-Really?

0:32:500:32:52

If you are in a work environment on a site or something,

0:32:520:32:56

they will be calling out to each other in Maltese.

0:32:560:32:59

You will be expected to understand what is going on at least.

0:32:590:33:02

-Health and safety.

-Yes.

0:33:020:33:03

-Is it easy to learn?

-No. No.

0:33:030:33:06

-It is a really difficult language.

-Now, we are sold on the lifestyle.

0:33:060:33:10

But obviously there are going to be some negatives.

0:33:100:33:13

The thing is, when you want to move to a country,

0:33:130:33:15

you do have rose-tinted spectacles on.

0:33:150:33:17

We're going to have to ask, aren't we?

0:33:170:33:19

Any downside to living here?

0:33:190:33:21

Yeah, you have to remember, this is a Mediterranean country,

0:33:210:33:23

so things are a little bit laid-back.

0:33:230:33:25

If you have anything that involves the government offices

0:33:250:33:31

such as... When you first start work,

0:33:310:33:34

you have to get your national insurance number.

0:33:340:33:37

These things tend to take a little more time

0:33:370:33:41

and patience. Patience is important.

0:33:410:33:43

-Are you patient?

-Yeah.

0:33:430:33:46

One of the things you get when you're living here is an ID card.

0:33:460:33:50

-OK.

-And the ID card is your passport, really, to all the services,

0:33:500:33:54

both government services and to banks.

0:33:540:33:56

You'll need your ID card for everything.

0:33:560:33:59

Even buying a washing machine, you will need your ID card.

0:33:590:34:02

They will ask you for your ID number.

0:34:020:34:04

-So it is very important that you get one.

-OK.

0:34:040:34:07

-That is worth knowing.

-So memorise your ID number.

-Yeah.

0:34:070:34:11

So, Kirstie, have to ask,

0:34:110:34:13

how easy do you think it is going to be for Claire to make friends here?

0:34:130:34:16

I think it'll be just fine.

0:34:160:34:17

Everyone is so nice and they are also laid-back.

0:34:170:34:20

There is not the stress here.

0:34:200:34:22

So, you know, go and join some like social clubs to start with

0:34:220:34:25

and then take it from there, I think.

0:34:250:34:28

-So are you more committed than ever to make the move?

-Absolutely.

-Yeah.

0:34:280:34:31

Yeah, definitely.

0:34:310:34:33

They are homeless.

0:34:330:34:34

They sold their home in the UK.

0:34:340:34:37

They look very relaxed underneath this stress,

0:34:370:34:40

because they have nowhere to live.

0:34:400:34:42

So we have got to find them the right property, haven't we?

0:34:420:34:45

-Yes, absolutely.

-Thank you all so much for your time.

0:34:450:34:48

Invaluable help. Honestly, it's so great.

0:34:480:34:51

-And, well, you might have some new neighbours soon.

-ALL: Yes!

0:34:510:34:54

Keep in touch.

0:34:540:34:56

-Lovely, thank you.

-ALL: Thank you.

0:34:560:34:58

When John and Claire do make the move, to purchase a property,

0:34:590:35:03

they'll need to budget for an extra 5% to 10% on top

0:35:030:35:06

of the asking prize for fees and taxes such as stamp duty.

0:35:060:35:10

If you are thinking of a move to Malta, it is worth knowing there are

0:35:100:35:13

some tax reducing schemes offered by the government for EU nationals,

0:35:130:35:17

retirees and high net-worth individuals.

0:35:170:35:20

It is worth checking to see if you qualify for one of these categories.

0:35:200:35:24

To get to and from Malta, there are regular flights

0:35:240:35:27

but only a handful of direct operators.

0:35:270:35:30

During peak months, it can get expensive,

0:35:300:35:32

so it is worth working in advance if you are able.

0:35:320:35:36

For our next offering, we are heading to the far north

0:35:400:35:43

of the island to the popular tourist destination of Mellieha, the place

0:35:430:35:47

John and Claire know best.

0:35:470:35:49

It is a small hillside town overlooking Mellieha Bay,

0:35:490:35:53

the largest beach on the island with 800 metres of golden sand.

0:35:530:35:57

With such an expanse of easy access coastline, historically, this part

0:35:570:36:01

of the island suffered countless raids from corsairs and pirates.

0:36:010:36:04

So in 1649, the Knights of St John

0:36:040:36:07

built the spectacular Red Tower to instil fear in the enemy

0:36:070:36:12

and security in the local population.

0:36:120:36:15

More recent military conflicts are also in evidence here, with

0:36:150:36:18

a vast network of underground air raid shelters used during the severe

0:36:180:36:22

Second World War bombardments, which are now open to the public.

0:36:220:36:26

For the 9,000 inhabitants, there is a high street full of shops,

0:36:260:36:30

restaurants and amenities.

0:36:300:36:32

A minute's drive away, in a residential zone,

0:36:320:36:34

is our next proposition.

0:36:340:36:36

So we have travelled north of the island to Mellieha,

0:36:360:36:39

-but I have got a feeling you know this area pretty well.

-Yes, we do.

0:36:390:36:43

How well?

0:36:430:36:44

Well, this is the first place we came to when we came to Malta.

0:36:440:36:47

And we have been coming ever since for six years now.

0:36:470:36:51

Sold on the area straightaway.

0:36:510:36:55

So let's see if you are sold on the property.

0:36:550:36:57

-Very different from other properties.

-Yep.

-First impressions?

0:36:570:37:01

Eh... Not too sure.

0:37:010:37:05

-But we'll see.

-We'll see.

-The balcony is nice.

-Yeah.

0:37:050:37:08

Let's see what you make of the inside, for the third time.

0:37:080:37:11

That's the first underwhelming reaction to the house hunt so far.

0:37:110:37:15

Built 13 years ago, this property has a simple, modern exterior.

0:37:150:37:20

But as we have been finding out,

0:37:200:37:22

these Maltese homes often have more to them than first meets the eye.

0:37:220:37:26

Here, there is a semi-basement,

0:37:260:37:27

which contained a large three-car garage.

0:37:270:37:30

And the entrance steps lead up to a raised ground floor, which is

0:37:300:37:33

the main living area.

0:37:330:37:35

-What are we thinking? A bit surprised?

-Yeah.

0:37:360:37:39

-Pleasantly surprised.

-Yeah, pleasantly surprised, actually.

0:37:390:37:42

-Yeah.

-Because it is so bad outside. Oh, no.

0:37:420:37:46

I wasn't sure what to expect inside, but it is really nice.

0:37:460:37:49

-It is quite nice, yeah.

-The kitchen behind us.

-Right.

0:37:490:37:53

A nice, modern kitchen.

0:37:530:37:54

-The kitchen is a little bit different.

-Yeah.

0:37:540:37:57

Because again, that open-plan feel.

0:37:570:37:59

-But it does work with the dining area there.

-Yeah, I do like it.

0:37:590:38:03

Just through there are two bedrooms and a large family bathroom,

0:38:030:38:07

beautifully done. The owners actually do use those bedrooms,

0:38:070:38:10

so really, they live on this one level.

0:38:100:38:12

-OK.

-There is a little bit more to show you.

-OK.

0:38:120:38:16

Off to the side of the living room is a marble staircase leading

0:38:190:38:23

up to a large, currently unused bedroom suite.

0:38:230:38:26

-This could be the most fabulous master bedroom.

-Yeah.

0:38:270:38:32

Because you have got an en-suite there.

0:38:320:38:35

-This is a nice surprise.

-Yeah.

0:38:350:38:38

-Magnificent views.

-Yeah.

-And a balcony.

-It's lovely.

0:38:380:38:42

You do make things difficult, don't you?

0:38:420:38:45

They're so deceiving, these properties.

0:38:470:38:49

-You just can't tell anything from the outside.

-Yeah.

0:38:490:38:52

Well, let's step outside.

0:38:520:38:55

So let's be honest,

0:39:000:39:01

-you were underwhelmed at the front of the property.

-Yeah.

0:39:010:39:04

But you can't be underwhelmed with that view, can you?

0:39:040:39:07

No, absolutely not.

0:39:070:39:08

-Beautiful. It is, isn't it?

-Follow me. One more thing to show you.

0:39:080:39:11

-All right.

-Great.

0:39:110:39:12

Off the master bedroom is a smaller room which leaves out to

0:39:140:39:17

a rear roof terrace.

0:39:170:39:19

Now, out here, we have an additional balcony.

0:39:200:39:25

Not quite the same views, granted.

0:39:250:39:27

Right.

0:39:270:39:28

But this is where you could actually extend this property

0:39:280:39:33

and have another floor.

0:39:330:39:35

We can go out the back?

0:39:350:39:36

You could go out to here. That is your border. But you can also go up.

0:39:360:39:40

You might not want to now, but that is a lovely thing to

0:39:400:39:42

have in your back pocket perhaps in five years' time.

0:39:420:39:45

Yeah, definitely. It is a bit of a wasted space at the moment.

0:39:450:39:48

-Isn't it?

-Yeah. So we have now got to put a price on this property.

0:39:480:39:52

We can see the potential, but as it stands,

0:39:520:39:55

what do you think it's on the market for?

0:39:550:39:56

Um... I'm going to go for...200.

0:39:560:40:00

John?

0:40:000:40:01

I'm going to go for...160.

0:40:010:40:04

That's really interesting

0:40:040:40:06

because the asking price is just over £177,000.

0:40:060:40:11

Really?

0:40:110:40:13

I feel at home in Mellieha,

0:40:130:40:14

so I was really happy that you brought us here.

0:40:140:40:16

And to have the price, yes. It's good.

0:40:160:40:19

-Be my guest, go and have another look around.

-Lovely. Thank you.

0:40:190:40:22

So it's interesting, isn't it?

0:40:250:40:26

You show somebody a completely different property and,

0:40:260:40:30

in a way, you get the same result.

0:40:300:40:32

They loved it. I am now confused.

0:40:320:40:35

Is it a genuine "I love it"? Or is it, "Oh, this is interesting."

0:40:350:40:39

Just going to have to wait and find out, aren't I?

0:40:390:40:41

Well, when I came up, I wasn't too...

0:41:030:41:06

I was a bit concerned. I wasn't too convinced.

0:41:060:41:08

But being inside and looking around, it is a really nice house.

0:41:080:41:12

-Yeah, it's nice.

-Really nice.

-Pleasantly surprised.

0:41:120:41:16

-Those views are just beautiful.

-And we know the area, you know.

0:41:170:41:21

We've been, like we said, coming here for years.

0:41:210:41:23

We know we can just jump on the bus down the road, we are

0:41:230:41:26

at the beach in five minutes.

0:41:260:41:27

Harry would love it. He knows where he is going here.

0:41:270:41:31

And then the extra space you've got out the back, you can extend on.

0:41:310:41:34

Yeah.

0:41:340:41:36

It could be a little project for me.

0:41:360:41:38

-Keep you busy. Hey, dear?

-Yes, dear.

0:41:390:41:41

Well, it has gone swimmingly well. And here they are.

0:41:460:41:49

Right, you love the inside of that property.

0:41:490:41:51

-Outside, can I convince you?

-Yeah, I think so.

-Yeah?

0:41:510:41:55

-A bit of a rub down on the door, Johnny.

-Give it a thought?

0:41:550:41:57

-A little varnish, it'll be lovely.

-I like that. I like that, options.

0:41:570:42:01

Right, here we go.

0:42:010:42:02

It's our final day here on the Mediterranean island of Malta,

0:42:110:42:14

looking for a new home for Claire, John and their son, Harry,

0:42:140:42:17

who are moving from Buckinghamshire with a budget of £200,000.

0:42:170:42:22

It has been rather exciting showing Claire and John around Malta

0:42:250:42:29

because, let's not forgot, they have sold their house back in the UK.

0:42:290:42:33

And everything we have shown them, they have given glowing reports.

0:42:330:42:37

But today, it is all about the mystery house.

0:42:370:42:40

Now, I am thinking glamour. I'm thinking fabulous views.

0:42:400:42:44

I'm thinking millionaire lifestyle but on a reasonable budget.

0:42:440:42:49

How can they refuse?

0:42:490:42:50

But before we head off for our final property,

0:42:540:42:57

I found out there has been some important news.

0:42:570:43:00

-Now, I've heard you have just had a phone call.

-Yeah.

0:43:020:43:06

Tell me, what was it about?

0:43:060:43:08

We've got to go to the school tomorrow

0:43:080:43:10

cos Harry's being enrolled into the school that we've been

0:43:100:43:14

-going for since we've been here.

-That's fantastic news!

-Yeah.

0:43:140:43:18

-Yeah.

-Because you really didn't know, did you?

-BOTH:

-No.

0:43:180:43:22

Just found out now.

0:43:220:43:23

Oh, John, you are welling up!

0:43:230:43:25

-No, it's brilliant.

-That's brilliant news!

0:43:250:43:29

You were praying for this school, it was so important.

0:43:290:43:32

And in a way, you based the whole move on the school, haven't you?

0:43:320:43:36

We have, yeah.

0:43:360:43:37

On Harry getting into this school that we have wanted and fought for.

0:43:370:43:41

Well, he did it. He did the test.

0:43:410:43:44

Can you feel the weight has been lifted off your shoulders?

0:43:440:43:46

-Totally.

-Absolutely.

-Yeah.

0:43:460:43:48

Yeah, it is all for, you know, for Harry. Knowing that he

0:43:480:43:52

is going to have the fantastic education that he deserves

0:43:520:43:55

is just...

0:43:550:43:57

-We really do need to find you somewhere to live.

-BOTH:

-Yes.

0:43:570:44:01

But that is great news. Harry is sorted.

0:44:010:44:04

-The first school of your choice.

-BOTH:

-Yes.

0:44:040:44:07

-Really difficult to get him in there, wasn't it?

-BOTH:

-Yeah.

0:44:070:44:10

Now you can relax a bit. And let the hunt continue for this property.

0:44:100:44:14

-OK.

-Right, I'm going to drag you on. Come on, let's go.

0:44:140:44:17

For our mystery house, we are heading south to Kalkara,

0:44:240:44:27

a village across the water from the capital of Valletta.

0:44:270:44:31

In such a strategic position at the mouth of the Grand Harbour,

0:44:320:44:35

this peninsula was home to the 19th century Fort Rinella.

0:44:350:44:39

Built by the British to house the most powerful gun

0:44:390:44:42

of its time, the Armstrong 100-ton canon, it is now a living museum.

0:44:420:44:47

The area is seeing an injection of investment with

0:44:480:44:51

the building of a technology park

0:44:510:44:53

and residential development which aim to boost the local economy.

0:44:530:44:57

With a population of 3,000,

0:44:570:44:59

this village was originally built around Kalkara Creek,

0:44:590:45:02

a sheltered inlet known for its boat-building of the traditional

0:45:020:45:05

Maltese dghajsa, originally used as water taxis across the harbour.

0:45:050:45:11

Up the hill from the creek in the new residential area

0:45:110:45:14

is our mystery house. So...

0:45:140:45:16

-It is time for our final property.

-OK.

0:45:160:45:19

-Now, this is our mystery house.

-OK.

0:45:190:45:22

-Or perhaps I should say mystery apartment.

-OK, fine.

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:45:220:45:27

Look at your face.

0:45:270:45:29

You're like, "What has she got?" What have we discovered here?

0:45:290:45:32

-I'll tell you what, let's step inside.

-Both:

-OK.

0:45:320:45:35

Claire and John seem sceptical about this property.

0:45:370:45:40

It might not be the characterful home they were after,

0:45:400:45:43

but as a new-build apartment, it does offer some bonus

0:45:430:45:46

facilities they haven't been able to get elsewhere.

0:45:460:45:50

So, we are going to start the tour of our final property.

0:45:500:45:54

-OK.

-Right.

0:45:540:45:55

-It's nice.

-You walk straight into this reception room.

-Yeah.

0:45:570:46:02

-You can tell, it is a totally new build, isn't it?

-It is, yeah.

0:46:020:46:06

-And then you have this fabulous hallway.

-It's amazing, isn't it?

0:46:060:46:11

-That's lovely. That's really unexpected.

-Shall we continue?

-Yes.

0:46:110:46:16

-Please, yeah.

-Come on.

0:46:160:46:17

-So you've got a good-sized double bedroom there.

-Yeah.

0:46:200:46:23

A second bedroom there, more of a children's bedroom.

0:46:250:46:28

Family bathroom.

0:46:280:46:30

And this is the master bedroom.

0:46:320:46:34

-This is lovely.

-It's very funky.

-I like it, it's nice.

0:46:350:46:40

So three bedrooms in total.

0:46:400:46:41

Obviously, all on the same level.

0:46:410:46:43

-But you have the en-suite.

-Oh, lovely. That's a bonus.

0:46:430:46:48

-So, do you like it so far?

-Yes.

-Very nice.

-Yeah, I do.

0:46:480:46:52

Well, one more very important room to show you. Let's keep going.

0:46:530:46:58

And our final room is the kitchen living space.

0:47:020:47:05

-This is nice.

-It is a bit different, isn't it?

-It is.

0:47:050:47:09

I like the space. I like open plan.

0:47:100:47:13

You have tremendous views out the window.

0:47:130:47:16

Because if you're going to move abroad,

0:47:200:47:23

-this is what you want to see.

-Yes, it is stunning.

0:47:230:47:26

-It's a lovely view, isn't it?

-Isn't it?

0:47:260:47:28

You've got the harbour, Kalkara Creek. You've got Valletta.

0:47:280:47:31

-Oh, it's lovely. It's stunning.

-It is. That is beautiful.

0:47:310:47:35

So we have got to put a price on all of this.

0:47:350:47:38

Have you been thinking how much it is on the market for?

0:47:380:47:40

-Yeah, I've been thinking.

-Have you?

-Yeah.

0:47:400:47:42

Well, I'll tell you what, hold that thought,

0:47:420:47:45

-cos I do have one more thing to show you.

-OK.

-Let's go.

0:47:450:47:49

After a slow start,

0:47:490:47:51

John and Claire are definitely warming to this option.

0:47:510:47:54

Also included is underground parking for two cars.

0:47:540:47:57

But it is up on the roof where I've saved the best till last.

0:47:570:48:01

-And this...

-Oh, my goodness!

0:48:010:48:03

..is your millionaire mystery pad pool.

0:48:030:48:07

-Oh, my God! This is unbelievable.

-Yes.

-I was not expecting this at all.

0:48:070:48:13

-This is what Harry is going to love.

-Yes.

0:48:130:48:16

-There are 12 other apartments in total.

-Right.

0:48:160:48:19

You do share this with the other apartments.

0:48:190:48:21

-But, hey, it's not bad, is it?

-No.

-No.

-Not bad at all.

0:48:210:48:24

Rooftop swimming pool, you can't go wrong with that, can you?

0:48:240:48:27

But can you afford it on your budget?

0:48:270:48:30

Final time, guys, final time. What are you thinking?

0:48:310:48:36

I'm going to go for 205, over budget. I'm going to go 205.

0:48:360:48:41

220.

0:48:430:48:45

-So both of you think it is over your budget.

-Yes.

0:48:450:48:48

The asking price is around £188,000.

0:48:480:48:54

That's good, isn't it? Really, for what you are getting.

0:48:540:48:56

Yeah, for what you are getting. I'm really surprised.

0:48:560:48:58

I thought it would be over budget, I really did.

0:48:580:49:01

-To have this is an absolute... Well, beyond a bonus, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:49:010:49:05

Now you have seen this amazing pool, I think you should go back,

0:49:050:49:08

have a look at the apartment.

0:49:080:49:10

-OK, thank you.

-Thank you.

-Please do. You're welcome.

0:49:100:49:13

-This is a nice sized room, John.

-Yeah.

0:49:350:49:38

Nice little room for Harry. Maybe.

0:49:380:49:40

Maybe, yeah. Got little speakers in here as well, haven't you?

0:49:400:49:42

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:49:420:49:44

I think Harry'd be blown away. Especially by the swimming pool.

0:49:440:49:47

Who could say that they've got a swimming pool on their rooftop?

0:49:470:49:50

I mean, there's not many people they can say that, can they?

0:49:500:49:53

-No.

-And those views are just breathtaking.

-Yeah.

0:49:530:49:56

The head is spinning.

0:49:560:49:57

Every house we've seen has got something that we love.

0:49:570:50:01

Each has got an upside and each has got a downside.

0:50:010:50:03

We have got to discuss it and see

0:50:030:50:06

how we feel we want to move forward, so to speak.

0:50:060:50:09

-And decide quite quickly, hadn't we?

-Yes, dear.

0:50:090:50:12

That's it. You've seen everything now. Property tours completed.

0:50:150:50:20

You probably want some time to reflect on what you've seen.

0:50:200:50:22

-And then, I think we should have a chat.

-Definitely, yeah.

0:50:220:50:25

Yeah, we need to.

0:50:250:50:26

The island of Malta is famous across the world for one

0:50:330:50:36

of its ancient local crafts - filigree.

0:50:360:50:38

Filo is the Italian word for wire, and filigree jewellery

0:50:400:50:43

and ornaments are made from delicate strands of silver or gold.

0:50:430:50:47

Francesca Balzan is the curator of the Palazzo Falson Museum

0:50:470:50:52

in Mdina which houses some of the finest examples of filigree.

0:50:520:50:56

Francesca, lovely to meet you.

0:50:580:51:00

Now, I am passionate about jewellery.

0:51:000:51:02

But filigree jewellery, it's something else, isn't it?

0:51:020:51:05

Absolutely. It really is a work of art.

0:51:050:51:07

Very intricate, very precious little piece of art.

0:51:070:51:10

And so, Francesca, when did it become really popular?

0:51:100:51:15

Well, definitely in the 19th century.

0:51:150:51:17

We know that it was being produced by a large number of craftsmen.

0:51:170:51:20

And it was really popular in terms of people buying it as souvenirs

0:51:200:51:24

when they were passing through Malta.

0:51:240:51:26

What a wonderful thing to take away from Malta.

0:51:260:51:29

I mean, just looking at it, it is exquisite.

0:51:290:51:31

-It is quite wonderful, isn't it? It looks so delicate.

-Absolutely.

0:51:310:51:36

So the one thing that I've seen is the Maltese cross.

0:51:360:51:39

-It's got eight points.

-Yes. It is the cross of the Order of St John.

0:51:390:51:43

The Order of St John settled in Malta in 1530,

0:51:430:51:45

and it became very much a symbol of Malta.

0:51:450:51:49

Well, I'm going to see one of your local jewellers, a real artisan,

0:51:490:51:52

and I am going to be looking out for the eight-pronged cross in filigree.

0:51:520:51:56

-Francesca, thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-Nice to meet you.

0:51:560:51:59

I'm going to meet Gaetano Saliba, a leading multi-silversmith who is

0:52:020:52:07

one of a handful of artisans on the island still making filigree

0:52:070:52:10

jewellery using the traditional methods.

0:52:100:52:13

Gaetano, how long have you been creating this wonderful

0:52:130:52:16

filigree jewellery?

0:52:160:52:17

I started in 1989.

0:52:170:52:19

-Tell me, was it family business?

-It was, it was.

0:52:190:52:22

My grandfather started it in 1904 and my father took over and then me.

0:52:220:52:29

The Maltese Cross is by far the most popular design

0:52:290:52:33

and the one I'm going to attempt to make.

0:52:330:52:35

What I will need are these.

0:52:350:52:37

Cos my eyesight is not going to be as good as yours.

0:52:370:52:40

-OK, precision here.

-You are going to do an eye here.

0:52:400:52:45

-And we are going to bend it like this.

-So you sort of tap it round.

0:52:450:52:49

Yes.

0:52:490:52:51

-Is that too big an eye?

-We can make it a little bit smaller, yeah.

0:52:520:52:56

You sort of tapped it round, didn't you?

0:52:560:52:59

-You have to hold it like this.

-Mm-hm.

0:52:590:53:02

And tap it. Like a pen. You have to hold it like a pen.

0:53:020:53:06

You are being very polite, but this isn't going to be sold to

0:53:060:53:09

anybody, is it? Let's be honest.

0:53:090:53:12

How's that? A bit better?

0:53:120:53:14

Good. Yeah.

0:53:140:53:16

-I think you're being polite.

-Yeah, I like it. I like it.

0:53:160:53:19

It's shocking.

0:53:220:53:23

Clearly, I'm no expert, Gaetano is.

0:53:230:53:26

-He is going to show me the next stage.

-Then we insert this inside.

0:53:260:53:30

See? And then we get the other one.

0:53:300:53:33

And we insert on the other side. Like this.

0:53:360:53:40

On its own, it reminds me of sort of a butterfly wing.

0:53:400:53:43

This process is repeated three more times for the other

0:53:430:53:46

sections of the cross.

0:53:460:53:47

Next step is soldering.

0:53:470:53:50

Silver solder powder is finally sprinkled over the pieces to

0:53:500:53:53

form a bonding agent.

0:53:530:53:55

So, from here, it has to go on a firebrick, like this.

0:53:560:54:00

The pieces need to be heated for the silver solder powder to

0:54:000:54:04

melt and bond with the filling wire to the border.

0:54:040:54:06

We heat the cross.

0:54:130:54:15

And now it has started to melt.

0:54:150:54:17

The solder.

0:54:170:54:19

We get the second one.

0:54:190:54:20

-It looks even finer.

-Third one. Yep.

0:54:210:54:25

And the fourth.

0:54:250:54:26

To join these four sections, silver solder paste rather than

0:54:280:54:32

powder is used, which makes a stronger bond.

0:54:320:54:35

And we put some silver solder in the middle.

0:54:360:54:39

-It is soldered, see?

-Yeah.

0:54:520:54:56

The final stage is to melt two silver links into a decorative

0:54:570:55:01

central ball.

0:55:010:55:02

And this, I have to solder it in the middle.

0:55:040:55:07

-And then after that, in the shops, hopefully...

-Yeah.

0:55:160:55:20

-For another satisfied customer.

-Yes.

-Taking home a little bit of Malta.

0:55:200:55:24

Thank you.

0:55:260:55:27

So, really positive reactions from our couple on all our properties.

0:55:330:55:37

So are they going to go for the more practical option or have

0:55:370:55:40

they been won over by the Maltese character homes?

0:55:400:55:44

I'm not sure. They might even keep looking. Well, let's ask them

0:55:440:55:48

and find out.

0:55:480:55:49

So, Claire and John,

0:55:510:55:52

-we have established time is of the essence with this house move.

-Yes.

0:55:520:55:57

So, out of everything we have shown you, let's cut to the chase.

0:55:570:56:00

Have we got close?

0:56:000:56:01

-There is one in particular.

-There is one.

-Really?

-Mellieha.

0:56:010:56:05

The one with potential.

0:56:050:56:06

What is it about that particular property that works for you?

0:56:060:56:11

I think it is the area where it is, cos we know it so well.

0:56:110:56:14

Harry knows it so well, which is really important to us.

0:56:140:56:19

We are taking him away from where he knows in England...

0:56:190:56:22

He knows Mellieha, he knows where the beach is. He knows the restaurants.

0:56:220:56:26

He knows where the shops are.

0:56:260:56:28

Cos he is going to be going to a brand-new school,

0:56:280:56:30

I think it is important to keep him to an area that he'll know

0:56:300:56:32

and he'll find comfortable.

0:56:320:56:34

And also, as importantly for me,

0:56:340:56:36

is the two of you with that property.

0:56:360:56:39

-Did it feel like a home?

-It did.

0:56:390:56:41

The more I think about it, the more we talk about it,

0:56:410:56:43

-the more I like it.

-So how quickly are you happy to move?

0:56:430:56:48

We are looking at contacting the owner with a view to purchase.

0:56:480:56:52

I thought you might say to me, "We are going to have a second viewing,"

0:56:520:56:56

but it sounds to me like you are practically there in your minds.

0:56:560:56:59

-Yeah.

-Yeah, pretty much.

-Yeah.

0:56:590:57:02

That's fantastic news!

0:57:020:57:04

Well, I think the next conversation you are going to be having is

0:57:040:57:07

-with the estate agent after this, isn't it?

-Yes.

0:57:070:57:10

-Well, listen, all the best.

-Yes.

0:57:100:57:12

I'm going to say cheers because I am delighted.

0:57:120:57:14

-I hope everything goes according to plan.

-Cheers.

0:57:140:57:17

-And to your new life in Malta.

-BOTH:

-Thank you.

0:57:170:57:19

Here's to you. Thank you.

0:57:190:57:20

-Thank you for helping us make it possible.

-You're welcome.

0:57:200:57:24

Well, it has been a rather exciting week.

0:57:300:57:33

John and Claire were desperate to move to Malta.

0:57:330:57:35

They'd sold their house in the UK and were just waiting to hear

0:57:350:57:38

if their son could enrol in the local school.

0:57:380:57:40
