Come winter in London, it's time to get out those woolly hats,

as the average temperature plummets to 6 degrees,

the dark grey skies loom overhead,

and Londoners are lucky if they see the sun for more than an hour a day.

Which is one reason why best friends, Jan and Sally,

are planning a winter getaway to warmer, sunnier climes.

We have been really good friends for about 20 years.

Jan is completely unique, very strong opinions.

And deeply spiritual.

You know, I regard Sally as part of my family,

we've had so much fun together.

We've been through heartbreaks as well, you know,

men and things like that.

But, you know, I can't imagine my life without Sally in it.

These sun seekers are ready to make a much-needed change

to their lifestyle.

The plan is to escape the beauty of London in the winter.

It is freezing.

I just like the brightness that you feel

when it's not a grey, dull day.

And, I guess, you know, emotionally, it just, it's such a lift.

I'm going to be 66 next month. And time is, you know,

it's time for me to leave London

and to live a different life that appeals to me.

Just even being able to sit under the stars

and the moon late at night.

It's just so appealing.

Jan cares part-time for her elderly mum.

So she'll be flying in and out of the UK

during her and Sally's two-month stint abroad.

Sally - from Yorkshire, via a spell in Canada - is a yoga teacher.

She and Jan are work colleagues as well as besties.

They develop properties together,

and when Sally founded a summer yoga festival, Jan came on board.

Yoga just changed my life.

I mean, I thought by the 30s you started to decline

and by the 50s you, sort of, you know what I mean, ready to...

Wrong.

I walk around feeling like, as I get older, life gets better.

And so, it feels great! I feel fantastic, you know.

Sexy, fun, healthy.

Yeah, it's just an amazing peace of mind really.

Sally and Jan want somewhere they'll be able to do yoga

outside in the sun, even in the winter.

They'll be funding their getaways with the rental income

generated through their buy-to-lets.

The friends have a very healthy winter sunshine budget

of £3,000 a month.

£2,500 of which is allocated for

accommodation and utility bills.

And where do these friends want to go to stretch out in the sun?

I am just gagging to go to Ibiza.

Before the tiny Spanish island of Ibiza

became the nonstop party paradise we know today,

it attracted a very different kind of traveller.

The hippies.

They were attracted in part

by the beautiful whitewashed villages and vistas.

They still pull in an eclectic mix of visitors today.

The south coast of the island has been developed

into a mainstream tourist hot spot,

while the north remains largely rural.

Properties range here from the very, very VIP luxury villas

to the seaside apartments

and traditional Spanish farmhouses called fincas.

To help Sally and Jan in their quest

to turn on and tune in to a winter on Ibiza

is local property expert, Hattie Scanlan.

Originally from Huddersfield, she moved to the island three years ago,

and combines her passion for photography

with her work as an estate agent.

The demand to live in Ibiza in the winter is growing,

and Ibiza is becoming an all-year-round destination.

Not just a seasonal destination, which is fantastic,

because people can come and experience island life

in all of its glory.

Not just for six months of the year.

This growing demand means that most rental properties are booked up

well in advance, so the prices can rocket.

Hattie is video calling Sally and Jan

to hear their property wishlist

and find who exactly will be joining her on Ibiza for the search.

So, do you guys know anything about Ibiza?

Have you been there before?

I have, I've been there several times.

And Jan hasn't.

-I just know about that.

-OK, so what I wanted to know is, what are the

most important things that you're looking for in your property?

I like either old fincas which have been renovated,

or I like super modern.

I mean, the idea for me is that I get to practise yoga

every day outside.

And I... For me, I'm a total beach bunny,

I love the beach regardless of the time of year, I love it.

And a really peaceful location.

For me, nature is the most important thing.

And the other thing, and this would be the icing on the cake,

it's not vital but, if there was a swimming pool,

this one would be very delighted.

Sally and Jan have budgeted £2,500 per month for accommodation.

They're looking for either a traditional or a modern property,

close to the sea and nature,

and with a swimming pool for Jan, if possible.

On Ibiza, the summer party season has long since passed.

And in winter, the island has something of a more laid-back vibe.

While it may be chilled, it's certainly not chilly.

Sally has flown the two and a half hours south,

and is already blissed out on island life.

I left my house at 3.00 in the morning, and it was minus 1.

I arrived here and it was bright,

and, you know, the seagulls were out,

I love the seagulls.

It just felt like a totally different experience.

It's an immediate difference.

Yeah, it's very uplifting.

Hattie's being driven to pick up Sally.

And she's excited to show the friends the short list of properties.

Sally and Jan did say that they wanted a Spanish-style finca,

but they also said that they'd

go for an ultramodern apartment as well.

So we have four properties that were going to show them,

which is a mix of both of them.

We do have surprises up our sleeve as well.

meet most of the friends' criteria.

The winter season is already underway,

so finding properties has been a bit of a difficult task,

due to the popularity of Ibiza.

Sally, by the sounds of it, the cold winter London life doesn't seem to

be doing a great deal for you.

How long have you been thinking about coming to Ibiza for?

I've been thinking about it for quite a long time.

Definitely been looking at other places and thinking,

"Would that be right?"

And then I just got a direct...

At each property, Sally will video call best pal Jan back in Britain,

to get her opinion.

So today, we're going to be taking you to a property in Santa Eularia.

It is a gastronomical and cultural centre of Ibiza.

Lots of yoga projects as well, it's just fantastic.

Santa Eularia, on the east coast of the island,

is ten miles from Ibiza Town.

With its reputation for fine food and cafe culture,

it attracts metropolitan jetsetters from all around the globe.

The palm tree-lined promenade runs the length of the broad sandy beach.

While the exclusive marina is a popular stop

for those cruising the Mediterranean Seas.

The first property is the first floor apartment

in this beach-front building.

Here we are in the Santa Eularia apartment.

Oh!

Sally's "oh" is all you need to know

that the open living and kitchen area has made

a positive first impression.

The traditional style dining table and chairs sit next to

a sleek and very snazzy gloss black kitchen.

I like the spaciousness, I like the open-plan.

It's cool. And I like the light.

With the view as well, you can get the sunrise light from here as well.

-Amazing.

-Which is perfect. The light can come through.

I would be doing yoga on that balcony as the sun comes up.

Next up on Hattie's guided tour

is the bathroom with separate shower.

I like this bathroom, very nice.

So the decor in itself, it just all comes together so nicely.

It's a beautiful freestanding bath.

Yeah, no, I like the bathroom a lot. I love this style of bath.

Really nice!

The apartment is hitting the mark so far,

and has two very roomy bedrooms with built-in storage space.

The master has an en-suite shower room.

The second bedroom has patio doors leading to the balcony

where there's plenty of space to relax

and listen to the waves lapping on the shore.

Or just settle down to soak up the sun.

You know, I could see myself being here.

Yeah. All of the above. And the view is amazing.

And listening to the sound of the waves is incredible.

OK. So, that is way higher than London,

-which is really interesting to know.

I think you're paying for the view here.

Due to the high demand and late booking,

this apartment can command a high price tag,

and is at the top end of Sally and Jan's budget.

In the UK, the winter weather is hitting hard.

Every week, Jan travels to visit her mother in Swanley, Kent.

My mum is 91.

She's just had a bad fall and had been in hospital for five weeks.

She's had a hip replacement.

While Jan is caring for her mum,

she won't be able to escape this British winter completely,

but she will join Sally when she can,

so she's fully committed to finding her ideal retreat in Ibiza.

Caring for my mum is a top priority.

You know, I love her, and I want her to be safe and protected and,

you know, I can't think of anything that I'd want to do more.

But I want to move towards the next phase of my life.

I want to live in the sun, by the sea, in nature,

and I cannot do that at the moment.

So, I have to make peace with that.

Jan has nipped out to a nearby cafe

The location is good as well, it's right next to the beach.

But, you know, immediately, it's the proximity of other places, you know.

So that would actually be a turn-off for me.

I think they're looking for something a little bit more

surrounded by nature, something a bit more secluded.

It's interesting to see that but, for the money too, it's like,

that's not how I want to live for that kind of money.

I thought it was an interesting first property.

I was really shocked at the price for what it is.

You know, the view was the saving grace,

and the fact it was so near the sea because I am a water baby.

But I'm really looking forward to seeing more properties

and just seeing what's out there.

I think the key word is peace.

I'm doing peace.

But it's too close to other flats for that much-needed peace.

something Sally and Jan are determined to tap into...

if they can find their perfect winter getaway.

converted into a rental property.

So it is the starting point for a lot of people,

into the hippie, bohemian kind of way of living.

Sant Joan is a village in northern Ibiza,

the spiritual heart of the island.

This is where the hippie influx of the '70s set up home.

It's less developed and attracts people looking for

a tranquil, more in-tune-with-nature lifestyle.

It's less techno, more boho.

This alternative lifestyle outlook

can be seen in the weekly market, which, alongside that traditional

locally-sourced fruit and veg and arts and crafts,

also sells gluten-free vegan cakes,

fermented green teas

and negative-energy-cleansing home-grown herbs.

The finca is just outside the village.

This is exactly what I love.

but has been sympathetically upgraded to a luxuriant standard.

-The kitchen isn't my favourite.

Um, if I had to, you know, and this is being very picky,

the overall vibe is fantastic so I don't want to knock anything,

but in an ideal world, an open-plan kitchen is my fantasy.

So, is this a possibility for you moving over to Ibiza,

-This is definitely a possibility.

She's determined that, by living like a local on Ibiza,

she'll be able to tap into the community of people

growing organic and sustainable food.

Sally is returning to the village of Sant Joan,

to the artisan market.

Stallholders here sell a wide variety of handmade local wares,

herbal remedies, fruit and veg, and baked goods.

the colours you can just see popping.

Ibiza has a burgeoning organic farm-to-fork food scene,

meaning that it's possible to have a diet of purely local produce,

and that's not just for vegetarians like Sally.

These look amazing.

Yeah.

Laia is growing their own their own plants and herbs.

And this is carob, which is amazing to see.

I mean, I don't think I've even seen carob like this

very often in my life.

Native to the island is the carob tree.

Its dried fruit is energy-rich and a natural antioxidant.

It's so beautiful to see these plants in their natural form.

In the UK, it's mainly sold in processed powdered form

for its numerous health benefits.

Sally is an advocate of a gluten-free diet

which is also catered for in the Sant Joan market

with stalls selling home-made gluten-free breads and cakes.

I mean, it's one of the nicest sort of surprises I could have had.

Like, coming here and realising how like-minded the people are.

And it's just fantastic to think that you can live a life like that

It's going to be, like, really exciting getting to know people

and actually, quite the local scene,

which is very much my passion.

It's a brand-new day, and Sally's a woman on a mission,

The famous town on the west coast

is hailed as the clubbing capital of the universe.

In the summer months,

it's a nonstop party town from dusk until dawn.

During the winter months, the town takes on a more chilled vibe

in comparison to its hedonistic summers.

And it's where Hattie lays her hat.

In the winter, not everything shuts down.

We don't just, you know, close up

and just hide here and shiver and wait till May.

Some places do, maybe further north of the island, but here,

restaurants, Spanish bars, all sorts of places are still open,

and they thrive in winter.

-And obviously, everyone is relaxed.

I get that. I mean, I didn't want to go to

such a rural community that was, like, so old-style,

there was nothing going on.

I definitely want to dip into the music scene here and...

The balcony offers plenty of space for outside dining

with that sea view.

The master bedroom is narrow,

and it has a very stylish finish.

But what gives it that extra-special appeal is up this spiral staircase.

On a clear day from this rooftop terrace,

you can see the horizon line perfectly.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid it's not such a clear day.

It's not the most fantastic weather today.

On a beautiful day, this view is absolutely spectacular.

Yeah, I get it.

I actually really like the roof terrace a lot

-and the view is mind-blowing.

When Sally saw the rooftop terrace,

the view from up there is absolutely spectacular,

and to catch it on a sunny day, it makes it just even better.

A big plus point is that it's under their budget.

The important thing is, how much is this one costing?

OK, it is 1,136.

That's... That's a good price.

So I think for the price...

And that's the interesting thing about it.

Plus, it has that amazing outside space.

The apartment is practical, it's affordable,

and that rooftop terrace makes it just that little bit special.

I love the terrace, I think it's fantastic.

-The terrace, seeing the sea,

but not just the sea from the little narrow view,

but really the whole 360 panorama is pretty impressive.

There's an enormous difference in price from the other one.

The £1,136 a month price tag

combined with the large, light rooms

and that roof terrace,

makes this apartment a real contender.

Weather-wise, it's been a bit miz, but even on a day such as this,

a San Antonio sunset is still stunning.

With one more property to view,

Sally and Jan now have a better idea of the type of properties available,

and the compromises they'll have to make

to turn their dream of a winter getaway into a reality.

Jan is planning on travelling between the UK and Ibiza regularly

during her and Sally's winter in the sun.

In the summer months,

there are around 14 flights a day from London to Ibiza.

In winter, there's only one,

but it could cost as little as £30 if booked in advance.

This is making winter on Ibiza increasingly popular,

which in turn pushes up the rental prices,

especially for last-minute bookings.

For a last roll of the rental property dice,

Hattie is taking Sally to the village of Sant Josep.

In the rural south-west of the island,

Sant Josep is only a 15-minute drive from San Antonio.

But it's a world away from being a clubbing town.

The village is a pretty maze of traditional whitewashed properties

because it was half the price of the first two properties.

have Sally and Jan picked as their winter getaway?

This winter, they've left it too late to organise their getaway

alongside work and family commitments.

that this will be their last UK winter.

But it was inspiring just to see what's on offer, really, I think.

That was what was good.

You know, I'm, sort of, it made me more resolved.

Well, the sun may have set on their plans to get away for this winter,

but the friends are really looking forward to the future.

My timeline is - winter in the sun, end of 2018,

and it's definitely happening.
