If ever you thought or even dreamt of living by the sea, but you're not too sure if it's for you.

0:00:020:00:05

Perhaps you've wondered what would it be like living right in the middle of the countryside

0:00:050:00:09

miles away from anywhere.

0:00:090:00:10

But the question is, would you really like it?

0:00:100:00:12

Well, home swapping gives people the chance to

0:00:120:00:15

exchange their properties and try out a new kind of lifestyle.

0:00:150:00:19

It's a growing trend here in the UK, and this series offers people

0:00:190:00:23

who have never tried it before the chance to give it a go.

0:00:230:00:26

-Whoa!

-Whoa!

0:00:280:00:29

Families from across Britain are about to go on an adventure.

0:00:320:00:36

They don't know each other and have no idea yet where they are going or

0:00:380:00:42

what type of property they will be calling home for the next few days.

0:00:420:00:45

Oh, look at that view.

0:00:470:00:48

During their stay, they will give their verdict on each other's home.

0:00:510:00:54

We are in a celebrity's house.

0:00:540:00:56

We are. I don't think you can get more different.

0:00:560:00:58

And get the opportunity to try something new in a different

0:00:580:01:01

part of the UK.

0:01:010:01:02

This is just unbelievably immense.

0:01:060:01:08

Only on their return will they get to see who has been

0:01:080:01:10

living in their house.

0:01:100:01:12

-Oh, yes.

-I think we'd get on great.

0:01:120:01:14

I think we'd get on brilliant.

0:01:140:01:15

And what they really think of it.

0:01:150:01:17

-Bijou.

-Heh-heh.

0:01:170:01:19

-Sparse.

-It is not.

-I don't think there is one thing

0:01:190:01:23

-I would change.

-It's ridiculous how much we love our house.

0:01:230:01:26

Our first home swappers are Charlie and Jayne.

0:01:330:01:36

She works in property and he is a traditional Cornish pasty maker.

0:01:360:01:41

They live in the sunny seaside town of Falmouth in Cornwall,

0:01:410:01:44

and have been married for five years.

0:01:440:01:46

Their home is a modern detached house,

0:01:460:01:49

just a stones throw to the coast.

0:01:490:01:51

The house is modern, so it doesn't have character.

0:01:510:01:54

But, stuff the character, when you have got fabulous water views,

0:01:540:01:56

and it is all light and very new Englandy.

0:01:560:01:59

It has got beautiful things about it, character isn't one of them.

0:01:590:02:02

-It's got me living here.

-You're the character,

0:02:020:02:04

but he won't be here unfortunately so... Or fortunately, one or the other.

0:02:040:02:08

That's enough of that, thank you.

0:02:080:02:10

Jayne is very proud of the interior design

0:02:110:02:13

and the addition she has made to this home.

0:02:130:02:16

It has a new England nautical theme running throughout,

0:02:160:02:19

adding a distinctive feel to the property.

0:02:190:02:22

I think our home swappers will love it.

0:02:220:02:24

They won't, "ooh and ah," because it isn't an old house.

0:02:240:02:27

-But I just think they'll be wowed by it.

-It has got the wow factor.

0:02:270:02:31

Cornwall has got character, the house doesn't need the

0:02:310:02:33

character, Cornwall has, and the Cornish people have got character.

0:02:330:02:36

So, they are very lucky to come here.

0:02:360:02:39

If they are a bit set in their ways like Charlie, you know,

0:02:390:02:41

they like the old furniture and that, you know,

0:02:410:02:43

it might not appeal.

0:02:430:02:44

I don't like old furniture, I like comfy furniture.

0:02:440:02:47

Comfy furniture, yeah. But this is what, you know,

0:02:470:02:49

we are swapping with people.

0:02:490:02:51

They are going to be living a different lifestyle for four days as we will, so,

0:02:510:02:54

you know, hopefully they will embrace that and give it a go.

0:02:540:02:57

Our next home swappers are Lesley and Dudley,

0:03:000:03:03

who are retired teachers, married for 35 years.

0:03:030:03:06

They have set up home in a traditionally styled

0:03:060:03:09

Ford house in the rural Cotswolds.

0:03:090:03:11

Their countryside house started out as a bungalow,

0:03:110:03:14

but has grown as they have extended it over the years.

0:03:140:03:18

If you look around our house, we've got bits of very nice antique

0:03:180:03:21

furniture that we have inherited.

0:03:210:03:22

We've also got loads of nice stuff we have bought from modern

0:03:220:03:25

shops because we like modern, bright, clear things, we like simple

0:03:250:03:29

clear lines, despite the clutter that we are surrounded by.

0:03:290:03:31

We are proud of the garden, as well.

0:03:310:03:33

This home has a heated swimming pool,

0:03:330:03:36

a grand garden, complete with home-grown vegetables,

0:03:360:03:39

and this Luckington Brook, which flows right through it.

0:03:390:03:42

I hope that they will enjoy it,

0:03:430:03:46

and I hope it will be a contrast from where they live

0:03:460:03:49

and they will be saying, "Oh, it would be nice to live here."

0:03:490:03:51

I hope they feel it is a place not to impress, but to enjoy.

0:03:510:03:55

I don't like things where I am not allowed to touch things.

0:03:560:03:58

It's nice to be somewhere beautiful,

0:03:580:04:00

but you shouldn't be in awe of it and terrified of it.

0:04:000:04:03

Both first-time swappers, our couples may have contrasting lifestyles,

0:04:060:04:10

but what they do share is a desire to try something new.

0:04:100:04:14

At their homes, they are both getting ready for their big getaway.

0:04:140:04:17

I wouldn't mind going to the seaside.

0:04:170:04:19

That would be really nice, wouldn't it?

0:04:190:04:21

Packed your passport?

0:04:210:04:23

This summer's heat wave has encouraged three times as many

0:04:230:04:26

home swaps to take place on British soil.

0:04:260:04:29

Big worries about what to pack,

0:04:290:04:31

because we don't know what we're doing and where we are going,

0:04:310:04:33

so, every lady's nightmare, but I think I have covered all avenues.

0:04:330:04:39

And in a recent survey, 20% of Brits say that they would like to

0:04:400:04:44

try a home swap,

0:04:440:04:45

because they are looking to have more of a local travel experience.

0:04:450:04:49

I can't wait to find out where we are going.

0:04:490:04:51

A little bit apprehensive, but we are committed.

0:04:510:04:54

We want to just get on with it,

0:04:540:04:55

and we're quite looking forward to it, actually.

0:04:550:04:59

While most house swappers usually know exactly where

0:04:590:05:02

they are going, we're really challenging our couples to

0:05:020:05:04

try something just that bit different.

0:05:040:05:06

So, we have made the choice for them based on their personalities,

0:05:060:05:10

and this is the fun bit.

0:05:100:05:11

First up are Lesley and Dudley and they are going to Cornwall.

0:05:110:05:15

-We're going to Cornwall.

-Cornwall!

0:05:150:05:17

I'm glad about that, I like Cornwall.

0:05:170:05:19

I hope it is actually on the coast.

0:05:190:05:21

It's all on the coast isn't it, Cornwall? How exciting.

0:05:210:05:26

And lots of really nice things to do in Cornwall.

0:05:260:05:29

Oh, we are going to have a good time.

0:05:290:05:31

For Jayne and Charlie, it's Wiltshire.

0:05:310:05:34

Oh, we are going to Wiltshire. I've never been there, have you?

0:05:340:05:37

No, where is Wiltshire?

0:05:370:05:38

I'm not sure, it's up the line somewhere.

0:05:380:05:42

Bye-bye, house.

0:05:420:05:44

Bye-bye, house.

0:05:440:05:46

Destinations revealed, it's time to get going.

0:05:460:05:49

Right, we're off.

0:05:490:05:50

Jayne and Charlie are travelling over 190 miles, to the ceremonial

0:06:020:06:06

county of Wiltshire.

0:06:060:06:07

It's a location full of wonderful cottages and historic buildings.

0:06:080:06:13

It's also home to one of Britain's most iconic prehistoric

0:06:130:06:16

monuments, Stonehenge, a World Heritage Site since 1986.

0:06:160:06:22

Jayne and Charlie's home swap is in the remote village of Luckington

0:06:220:06:26

and their new home is on a quiet street with just 15 other houses.

0:06:260:06:30

It's a peaceful area, it has a local pub and a very handy post office.

0:06:300:06:34

After their four hour journey, they finally arrive at their new

0:06:370:06:40

home away from home.

0:06:400:06:42

-This is very pretty, isn't it?

-It's relaxed, isn't it?

0:06:420:06:44

And a big garden. I love gardens. Completely different to our house.

0:06:440:06:47

It's made to look like a cottage when it's not.

0:06:470:06:49

It's a modern house, I would say.

0:06:490:06:51

I would colour wash, I would paint the windows white,

0:06:510:06:55

-and I would colour wash it and make it a bit lighter.

-Change everything to white.

0:06:550:06:58

I would, yeah. That doesn't mean to say it isn't a lovely house,

0:06:580:07:01

it's just different tastes, isn't it?

0:07:010:07:03

Right, here we are.

0:07:100:07:12

Golly, very bright walls.

0:07:120:07:16

This lady, and I bet it is the lady who does the decorating...

0:07:160:07:19

There's a lot of smudgy painting. It's a very, sort of, 1980s.

0:07:190:07:24

It's a very welcoming reception room, actually. It's very warm.

0:07:240:07:27

The colours do actually work, not to my taste, though.

0:07:270:07:29

-You've got funny old colour tastes.

-I've got a funny colour tastes, I have.

0:07:290:07:32

Oh, wow, this is a nice big room.

0:07:320:07:35

I like that. Isn't it ideal?

0:07:350:07:38

And what a lovely view over the garden and the countryside, look.

0:07:380:07:41

I like everything about this because this is my taste, not yours.

0:07:410:07:44

-That's your taste.

-That coffee table to me is...

0:07:440:07:46

-It's lovely, isn't it?

-It's lovely, yeah.

-Yeah.

0:07:460:07:49

I'm really impressed with this.

0:07:490:07:51

Past the study and the home office complete with over 300 books,

0:07:510:07:55

the next up is the kitchen, with not a white piece of furniture in sight.

0:07:550:08:00

Having said what I said at the beginning about the colours

0:08:000:08:02

being a bit bright, I'm actually warming to this now.

0:08:020:08:04

I think it's lovely. I like the pine table.

0:08:040:08:06

-You do, that's lovely.

-We got a pine table, you painted it blue.

0:08:060:08:09

I think you'll prefer this to our kitchen because mine is fairly light and white and duck egg blue.

0:08:090:08:14

I think you are going to come home and try and make me

0:08:140:08:17

make my kitchen more warm,

0:08:170:08:18

and it is, it's warm all the way through.

0:08:180:08:21

I'm actually going to just take back what I said at the beginning.

0:08:210:08:24

I love French doors, with the sun streaming through, it's lovely, isn't it?

0:08:240:08:27

Yeah, it's very nice.

0:08:270:08:28

Then, it's upstairs to see their new bedroom.

0:08:280:08:31

But will it have the character that Charlie loves so much?

0:08:310:08:35

Oh, this is an interesting shape, isn't it?

0:08:350:08:37

-Wow, nice bonnet ceiling, I like that.

-Lovely.

0:08:370:08:40

Do you know, this house gets more interesting as you go around.

0:08:400:08:43

I love that piece of furniture.

0:08:430:08:45

-There's some lovely furniture.

-Yeah.

0:08:450:08:47

It's got character, ours doesn't have any at all.

0:08:470:08:49

It's got a lovely view.

0:08:490:08:50

It's got a fabulous view and it's all new England and light

0:08:500:08:53

-and gorgeous.

-Yeah, that's it.

-Cheek!

0:08:530:08:55

Time for the final room,

0:08:560:08:58

and there's a great surprise in store...a Jacuzzi.

0:08:580:09:01

Oh, me and you with champagne later, lovely.

0:09:010:09:04

No taps run into it, look.

0:09:040:09:06

Yeah, so you can lean back and press the buttons and bubble away.

0:09:060:09:08

It looks really good, interesting shape.

0:09:080:09:12

It's got a lot of character, the house has.

0:09:120:09:16

-It has, that we haven't got.

-No.

0:09:160:09:19

While Jayne and Charlie make themselves more

0:09:190:09:21

comfortable in their new Wiltshire home,

0:09:210:09:24

our other swappers Lesley and Dudley have made their way

0:09:240:09:27

south to the port town of Falmouth in Cornwall.

0:09:270:09:30

In the 18th century, believe it or not, Falmouth was more

0:09:310:09:34

cosmopolitan than London, due to its accessibility to the sea.

0:09:340:09:38

Indeed, in 1805, the news of Britain's victory,

0:09:380:09:41

and Admiral Nelson's death at Trafalgar,

0:09:410:09:44

actually reached Falmouth first.

0:09:440:09:46

The bustling town centre is a charming mix of independent

0:09:460:09:49

and high street shops.

0:09:490:09:51

It's also home to one of the leading

0:09:510:09:53

galleries in the West Country, the award-winning Falmouth Art Gallery.

0:09:530:09:58

After their four hour journey, Lesley and Dudley finally arrive.

0:09:590:10:03

Amazing hanging baskets. We couldn't achieve anything like that, could we?

0:10:030:10:07

Oh, God, they're going to think our flowers are awful.

0:10:070:10:10

White, everything is white.

0:10:170:10:19

-Clean, bright.

-Bright.

0:10:190:10:21

-Co-ordinated, it's all.

-Co-ordinated, it is all co-ordinated.

0:10:210:10:25

Yes, and it is very fresh, certainly embraced Falmouth.

0:10:250:10:30

What are they going to think about our house?

0:10:310:10:34

Ours is a bit scruffy compared to this. It is absolutely immaculate.

0:10:340:10:38

-Our house happened, these people planned this.

-Yes.

0:10:380:10:42

Because everything matches.

0:10:420:10:44

Everything is nice and tidy and organised.

0:10:440:10:48

-Look at that view, look at that view, Dudley!

-Yeah.

0:10:480:10:52

That is amazing!

0:10:520:10:53

Our swappers then head to the conservatory,

0:10:570:10:59

through the white-walled dining area and pristine kitchen.

0:10:590:11:02

Oh, Dudley, look at that. I like that garden furniture.

0:11:040:11:07

I love it, I really love it. It's a tremendous garden.

0:11:070:11:10

It's my sort of a garden. This is compact.

0:11:100:11:13

Now all I have got to do is persuade Lesley to have a garden this size.

0:11:130:11:17

And I do love this garden

0:11:170:11:18

and I can see it meets all normal requirements.

0:11:180:11:21

-I've got mixed feelings.

-Ha-ha-ha!

0:11:210:11:23

Oh, look at this room!

0:11:250:11:27

Oh, Dudley, blimey!

0:11:270:11:31

-The view.

-This is smashing.

0:11:310:11:33

Lots of wardrobe space.

0:11:340:11:36

Everything built in, tidy. This is more like the bedroom that I...

0:11:360:11:41

And they have an en suite.

0:11:410:11:43

It is a very nice for them to have left things like that out.

0:11:430:11:45

We didn't do anything half as good as that.

0:11:450:11:48

All we did was left them a hairdryer, I hope they found the hairdryer.

0:11:480:11:51

Let's see the bathroom.

0:11:540:11:56

Oh, it's a proper...

0:11:560:11:57

It's a celebration bath! It's a place to have a party!

0:11:570:12:01

Look at that, "time to drink champagne."

0:12:010:12:03

What a bathroom.

0:12:050:12:06

Well, it's been a long day for our couples.

0:12:110:12:13

So, it's time to unpack and unwind.

0:12:130:12:17

I'm at home now. I've got my slippers on, see?

0:12:170:12:20

You made yourself comfortable, that's good.

0:12:200:12:22

Brought summer dresses

0:12:220:12:23

and I'm sure I won't be wearing summer dresses doing activities.

0:12:230:12:26

You might be able to cook my dinner tomorrow night wearing this

0:12:260:12:29

nice little top. What do you think?

0:12:290:12:30

What, me wearing that?

0:12:300:12:31

No, I wear it, you cook.

0:12:310:12:33

It's different, but we like it and we are here to enjoy it.

0:12:350:12:39

It's Falmouth, isn't it? And I think it's good.

0:12:390:12:42

I think we've done well. It's 6 o'clock.

0:12:420:12:46

It's time for a gin and tonic.

0:12:460:12:47

-Gin and tonic. Oh, God.

-Yes.

0:12:470:12:52

I don't need to unpack anymore, I'm leaving everything in here.

0:12:520:12:54

-I tell you what, shall we just do this in a minute?

-Have a drink.

0:12:540:12:57

Have a beer and a glass of Prosecco. I think that is a jolly good idea.

0:12:570:13:00

Lesley and Dudley have swapped their country

0:13:110:13:13

house in Wiltshire for a modern, white-walled haven in Falmouth.

0:13:130:13:17

Had a good night's sleep, it was a lovely, comfortable bed

0:13:170:13:20

in this lovely, bright, cheerful house. Sunny sky outside.

0:13:200:13:24

And I woke up just after 5 o'clock to see the sun come up over

0:13:240:13:27

this bit, that's really brilliant.

0:13:270:13:29

Sounds wonderful.

0:13:290:13:30

Back in Wiltshire,

0:13:300:13:31

Jayne and Charlie are checking out their spectacular garden.

0:13:310:13:34

-This is absolutely stunning.

-Stunning.

0:13:340:13:37

You were laughing at me, saying our garden is too small for a vegetable garden.

0:13:370:13:41

-Look what these guys have done.

-Onions over there, look.

0:13:410:13:43

-I could do this on that piece of patio.

-Yes, you could do.

0:13:430:13:46

I'm really excited now, because I really want to start growing things.

0:13:460:13:50

I've got pool envy now, as well as garden envy.

0:13:540:13:57

-Wow, it is warm, yes.

-Wow.

0:13:580:14:00

Our home swappers have each left a guide, giving advice on places

0:14:060:14:10

to go and things to do in the local area.

0:14:100:14:13

Home away from home. It's our manual.

0:14:130:14:16

It also provides tips on the everyday workings of the house.

0:14:160:14:19

Oh, there's fire pit outside. We must use that.

0:14:200:14:24

What, put you in it?

0:14:240:14:25

No, I was thinking of putting you on it.

0:14:250:14:27

Steady, steady.

0:14:270:14:28

Inside there is an envelope with a special day out, which will

0:14:280:14:31

give our couple a unique sense of what this area has to offer.

0:14:310:14:35

But first, there is a clue.

0:14:350:14:37

"Someone is telling porkies." I know,

0:14:370:14:40

I bet we are going to watch pork pies been made or...

0:14:400:14:43

That would be nice.

0:14:430:14:45

-We might be going to a pig farm.

-Go on, read it out.

0:14:450:14:48

I just don't want to look.

0:14:480:14:49

I don't want to look. Oh, God.

0:14:490:14:52

"It's out with pasties and in with the bangers,

0:14:540:14:56

"as today you'll making some of Wiltshire's finest

0:14:560:14:58

"pork sausages at an award-winning butchers."

0:14:580:15:00

-Ah, fabulous!

-Wow, I'll really enjoy that. That's lovely.

0:15:000:15:03

That would suit me down to the ground.

0:15:030:15:05

I really look forward to that, lovely.

0:15:050:15:07

-That's right up your street, isn't it?

-Absolutely brilliant, yeah.

0:15:070:15:10

Just seven and a half miles down the road from Luckington,

0:15:100:15:13

is the picturesque market town of Malmesbury.

0:15:130:15:16

Jayne and Charlie are on their way to meet a local butcher,

0:15:160:15:19

Michael Thomas, who makes a great variety of sausages

0:15:190:15:22

that are now delivered all over the country.

0:15:220:15:24

Today we are going to make the Malmesbury King, our award winning sausage.

0:15:240:15:27

Oh, wow, so do I get to use a sausage machine?

0:15:270:15:29

-I will give you a hands on show of how to make them. Then you two can have a go.

-Lovely.

-Thanks.

0:15:290:15:33

So, let's go this way.

0:15:330:15:34

The Malmesbury King is inspired by the great King Athelstan, who

0:15:360:15:39

was the first king of all England.

0:15:390:15:41

He reigned for 14 years from 925 AD,

0:15:410:15:45

and is buried in the local Abbey.

0:15:450:15:47

We use shoulders, you get a nice, even confirmation, little

0:15:470:15:49

bit of belly there, so you get a nice mix of fat and lean.

0:15:490:15:52

If you made it just with the leg it would cook hard, it wouldn't be very nice,

0:15:520:15:55

and then also there is some ready-made seasoning we have made for us to a special recipe.

0:15:550:15:59

-You're not going to tell us that, are you?

-Definitely not that one. And this is a special mix of herbs.

0:15:590:16:03

I can tell you what's in there, but not the amounts.

0:16:030:16:06

Here's our recipe book over here and it says top secret on front of it.

0:16:060:16:09

-So you are not allowed to look at that.

-I like it.

-Fantastic.

0:16:090:16:12

Pasty maker Charlie and Jayne start by putting the meat through

0:16:120:16:15

the mincer to make the sausage meat.

0:16:150:16:17

The top-secret herb mix, including thyme and ginger, is added before the casing.

0:16:170:16:23

-What are they actually made of?

-It's pigs intestines.

0:16:230:16:25

They unravel it, so it starts off about this long,

0:16:250:16:28

then when they finish it can be anything up to a mile long.

0:16:280:16:32

Amazing.

0:16:320:16:33

Now, the sausage filler is then squeezed into the casing,

0:16:330:16:36

making sure it is the correct thickness.

0:16:360:16:38

If you put your thumb and your forefinger controlling it and the little finger's got the thickness.

0:16:380:16:42

Ho, ho, ho, that's a big sausage you've got there.

0:16:420:16:45

Steady, it's a family shop and all that.

0:16:450:16:47

Cheeky girl. And it's Jayne who is first to have a go.

0:16:480:16:51

Look at that, eh?

0:16:510:16:53

I'm making sausages! Ah!

0:16:550:16:57

Not bad, but what about our expert cook Charlie?

0:16:580:17:02

-Are you going to sell the ones that we've made?

-Oh, yes.

0:17:020:17:04

-Good Lord.

-Free labour.

0:17:040:17:07

Waste not, want not.

0:17:070:17:09

The final part of the process is the tricky bit -

0:17:090:17:11

linking the sausages.

0:17:110:17:13

You just do one, then it's two

0:17:130:17:15

and a twist. It's all just twists, there's no knots. Isn't that easy?

0:17:150:17:19

You make it look very easy, yeah.

0:17:190:17:20

You can imagine the mess I'm just about to make, can't you?

0:17:200:17:23

Well, have a go.

0:17:230:17:24

Now that's a lot of sausages, but here comes the moment of truth.

0:17:260:17:30

-Really looking forward to this.

-Go on, then, go for it.

0:17:300:17:33

-That's lovely.

-You know what, I'm not a sausage eater generally,

0:17:340:17:37

but those taste absolutely delicious, Michael, thank you.

0:17:370:17:40

-Thank you very much.

-Aren't they nice?

-They are nice.

0:17:400:17:42

Actually the best sausage I have ever had, they are lovely.

0:17:420:17:46

-Thank you.

-Thank you very much for today.

-That's fine.

0:17:460:17:48

-Glad you enjoyed it.

-Thank you very much.

0:17:480:17:50

I won't need any tea.

0:17:500:17:51

I hope not.

0:17:510:17:53

Well, if you prefer sightseeing to cooking, you are in luck,

0:17:530:17:56

because there are many beautiful areas

0:17:560:17:58

and guided walks to discover in Wiltshire.

0:17:580:18:01

Before heading home,

0:18:010:18:02

Jayne and Charlie check out the ancient town of Malmesbury.

0:18:020:18:06

This location has a rich history, dating back over 1,000 years.

0:18:060:18:11

It has many historic sites, including Malmesbury Abbey

0:18:110:18:14

and the stunning Abbey House Gardens.

0:18:140:18:17

If you love the countryside then you will certainly like a home

0:18:180:18:21

swap in this area.

0:18:210:18:23

You can enjoy Wiltshire's rural style by experiencing

0:18:230:18:26

plenty of cottages.

0:18:260:18:27

Or, you could take to the water and stay on a lovely canal boat.

0:18:270:18:31

Almost 200 miles away in Falmouth, Lesley and Dudley

0:18:320:18:36

are about to discover what their special day out will be.

0:18:360:18:39

"If you can't stand the heat..."

0:18:410:18:43

Well, the other half of that is,

0:18:430:18:45

"You can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."

0:18:450:18:47

Pasties.

0:18:470:18:49

Cornish pasties.

0:18:490:18:50

Or scones.

0:18:500:18:52

Clotted cream, scones. Of course, yes, they left us some scones.

0:18:520:18:54

-Yes, they did, in a bag.

-Go on, have a look.

0:18:540:18:57

Ah, "We make Cornwall's most famous food for a living

0:18:580:19:02

"so today we are going to put your cooking skills...

0:19:020:19:06

"..to the test as you attempt to make your very own Cornish pasties."

0:19:060:19:10

Spot on.

0:19:100:19:12

God, yes, amazing.

0:19:120:19:15

As you know, the county of Cornwall is world-famous for its pasties.

0:19:150:19:19

They were first mentioned in an agricultural survey

0:19:190:19:22

back in 1808 and, by the end of the 19th century, pasties were

0:19:220:19:26

the staple diet for working men right across the county and beyond.

0:19:260:19:30

Our swappers will be learning the tricks of the trade at one

0:19:300:19:33

of Cornwall's leading bakers, Rose.

0:19:330:19:36

But it could be a long day.

0:19:360:19:37

-This is too small.

-It fits me all right. Shall we swap over?

0:19:380:19:41

Try mine. You might have mine.

0:19:410:19:44

That feels a bit looser, so far.

0:19:440:19:45

Oh, yes, definitely. This is much tighter, this is not flattering.

0:19:450:19:50

Can I have that one back, please?

0:19:500:19:52

Does it matter? Does it matter?

0:19:540:19:56

I am sure this is not the most elegant of hats.

0:19:580:20:00

Right, we are ready to go.

0:20:030:20:05

Very fetching, I'd say.

0:20:050:20:07

Lesley and Dudley are working with award-winning development

0:20:070:20:10

chef Oscar Timmings.

0:20:100:20:11

-So are you all ready to make?

-Yes, OK.

0:20:110:20:15

That's one pastry disc, OK? Get a handful of vegetables, OK,

0:20:150:20:20

you get that in there like that. Your beef skirt...

0:20:200:20:23

-Locally sourced?

-Locally sourced.

0:20:230:20:25

That's your basic contents in a pasty, OK. Seasoning, that goes in the middle.

0:20:250:20:31

So, the water is sticking that together and you go along and

0:20:310:20:34

you pinch all the way along. You use your thumb to fold that under,

0:20:340:20:40

you pinch and you fold under.

0:20:400:20:41

You are crimping all the way along,

0:20:410:20:43

you are rolling it, just keep the flow going.

0:20:430:20:46

That looks beautifully neat.

0:20:460:20:47

-I know we're not going to be able to do anything like that.

-I think you will.

0:20:470:20:51

That end bit there looks a lot smaller than the ones

0:20:510:20:54

we have already seen.

0:20:540:20:55

Yes, I'm a bit of a daintier crimper than some people.

0:20:550:20:59

Some people are big crimpers and some people are small crimpers.

0:20:590:21:02

I would say I am a dainty crimper.

0:21:020:21:03

I've been called a dainty crimper, yes.

0:21:030:21:06

A genuine Cornish pasty has a distinctive D shape,

0:21:080:21:12

and it is crimped on one side.

0:21:120:21:14

Originally, it was convenience food for miners and farmers,

0:21:140:21:17

and the crust was used as a handle.

0:21:170:21:19

The shape made it easy to carry and eat.

0:21:190:21:22

This is the difficult bit.

0:21:220:21:24

This is the difficult bit. Basically, you get that

0:21:240:21:26

end bit and push it in, that's it, just keep going.

0:21:260:21:29

-Pinch twist.

-That's it.

-Pinch twist.

0:21:290:21:33

Well, I think I'm doing all right.

0:21:330:21:35

That's good. I've seen worse than that. Good effort, first time.

0:21:350:21:38

I've seen worse, I've seen worse.

0:21:380:21:40

Why are you saying that to me?

0:21:400:21:41

In 2011, the Cornish pasty was awarded what's

0:21:440:21:47

known as Protected Geographical Indication Status .

0:21:470:21:51

Which means that only pasties made in Cornwall to the

0:21:510:21:54

traditional recipe can be labelled a genuine Cornish pasty.

0:21:540:21:59

By the way, grubs up.

0:21:590:22:01

Wow, look at that.

0:22:010:22:03

That is great, the juice is all in there and the meat is in there.

0:22:030:22:07

-Lovely and hot.

-OK?

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

-Enjoy.

-Thank you.

0:22:070:22:14

-Mm, that's very good.

-Delicious.

-Good?

-Yeah!

0:22:180:22:22

In fact, I think it is the best pasty I have ever had.

0:22:220:22:24

Thanks, Oscar, we've really learned something today.

0:22:240:22:26

Hopefully one day I can come up and taste one of yours.

0:22:260:22:29

-You're welcome in Wiltshire any time you like.

-Thank you very much.

0:22:290:22:32

Trained by a champion, thank you.

0:22:320:22:33

I fancy one of those myself.

0:22:370:22:39

After exercising their culinary skills,

0:22:390:22:42

Lesley and Dudley wander around Falmouth.

0:22:420:22:44

Famous for its maritime heritage,

0:22:440:22:47

it's home to the world's third largest natural deepwater harbour,

0:22:470:22:51

and it is one of England's most attractive places to enjoy the sea.

0:22:510:22:54

If you're planning to home swap in this area, there is a wealth

0:22:540:22:57

of potential property styles -

0:22:570:23:00

from homes overlooking the harbour, to Edwardian town houses or

0:23:000:23:05

even seafront properties with amazing views.

0:23:050:23:08

Here's a point, why spend a fortune jetting off abroad when some

0:23:110:23:15

of the best things about a holiday are right here, at home in the UK?

0:23:150:23:19

Take food, for example.

0:23:190:23:21

No matter what part of the country you are in, there is always

0:23:210:23:23

a wide range of lovely local produce to enjoy.

0:23:230:23:26

And home swapping is a great way to show it off.

0:23:260:23:29

So, let's see what our couples have left for their guests.

0:23:290:23:32

In Wiltshire, our swappers have been left a rack of local lamb

0:23:340:23:37

with rosemary and a selection of vegetables.

0:23:370:23:41

While the cooking may be Charlie's domain,

0:23:410:23:43

Jayne is getting all green fingered.

0:23:430:23:45

Apparently, you can never have too many potatoes.

0:23:450:23:49

I think these are the spuds.

0:23:490:23:50

That's rhubarb, so these must spuds. Right.

0:23:500:23:53

As dinner hots up, there's that old conundrum - now where did

0:23:530:23:56

they put that cutlery?

0:23:560:23:58

Excuse me, I'm looking for some knives, actually.

0:23:580:24:00

A working knife to peel potatoes and things.

0:24:030:24:07

Oh, hang on. A-ha, a knife.

0:24:070:24:09

Back in the garden, Jayne is still on the hunt for vegetable

0:24:110:24:14

gold in the shape of a spud.

0:24:140:24:17

Thank goodness no-one is looking because I don't know what I'm doing.

0:24:170:24:21

Ah, I have got a potato! I got a potato.

0:24:220:24:26

I got three potatoes! Oh, golly.

0:24:280:24:31

Meanwhile, in Falmouth, Lesley and Dudley

0:24:330:24:35

are about to find out what's on the menu this evening.

0:24:350:24:38

I don't believe it.

0:24:380:24:39

More Cornish pasties!

0:24:420:24:44

You had better believe it.

0:24:440:24:45

It's Cornwall's national dish all over again.

0:24:450:24:49

But to top it off, they have got a bottle of locally sourced

0:24:490:24:51

sparkling wine.

0:24:510:24:53

Right, so that's one done.

0:24:540:24:56

It's supposed to be round, Dudley.

0:24:560:24:57

I can't stop it coming out.

0:24:570:24:58

It's just got a mind of its own.

0:24:580:25:01

I reckon that's, you know... Think of it folded.

0:25:010:25:03

It's pretty good, it's pretty good.

0:25:030:25:05

Well, they should be pros at pasty making by now.

0:25:050:25:08

A twist here and a little pinch there

0:25:080:25:11

and they are ready to go into the oven.

0:25:110:25:13

The veggie patch experience has proved enlightening for Jayne

0:25:140:25:18

and has given her some good ideas.

0:25:180:25:20

I have always wanted a vegetable garden.

0:25:200:25:22

I haven't known how I could possibly do it.

0:25:220:25:24

I'm very, very grateful for this opportunity. How fabulous.

0:25:240:25:28

Happy home swaps!

0:25:280:25:30

They have done us proud.

0:25:300:25:32

Oh, they look good. They do look good.

0:25:320:25:35

One perfect, one a disaster and two mediums.

0:25:350:25:40

-What do you think?

-Brilliant.

-Brilliant.

0:25:400:25:42

Perhaps these pasties need something extra.

0:25:450:25:48

-Where do you want it?

-I want it there.

0:25:510:25:55

Oh, well, the bigger the better, I guess.

0:25:590:26:01

To Cornish pasty and all who eat them. Cheers.

0:26:020:26:06

Jayne and Charlie

0:26:160:26:17

have swapped their nautical themed, modern detached house in the

0:26:170:26:20

county of Cornwall, with Lesley and Dudley, who love the countryside

0:26:200:26:24

and live in a traditional, rural Ford house in the Cotswolds.

0:26:240:26:27

Day three in Falmouth, and Lesley is following her home manual to a T.

0:26:280:26:33

One great thing about home swapping is being able to ask

0:26:330:26:37

swappers to look after your pets.

0:26:370:26:38

But of course, do remember to leave food

0:26:380:26:41

and instructions of what you would like them to do.

0:26:410:26:43

Here you are, lovely tasty food for you, pussy.

0:26:430:26:45

Meanwhile in Wiltshire, Jayne and Charlie are about to find out

0:26:490:26:53

what they will be doing today, but first, a clue.

0:26:530:26:55

-Oh...

-"In the drink."

0:26:570:26:59

See, I reckon on cider.

0:26:590:27:01

It might be cider, it might be in the drink as in the sea.

0:27:010:27:03

We might be swimming in the sea.

0:27:030:27:05

Come on, let's have a look.

0:27:050:27:07

-Oh! You'll love this.

-Go on, then.

0:27:070:27:10

Farming is a major part of Wiltshire life, with crop fields all over

0:27:100:27:13

the county.

0:27:130:27:15

So today, you will be getting a real taste of the West Country

0:27:150:27:17

at an historic brewery.

0:27:170:27:19

That's wonderful. It couldn't be better, could it, hey?

0:27:190:27:23

A happy boy.

0:27:240:27:26

We Brits love nothing better than a traditional pub and holidaying

0:27:260:27:29

at home can provide you with a great opportunity to find a new favourite.

0:27:290:27:33

The county of Wiltshire has a host of pubs and breweries,

0:27:350:27:38

some dating back many centuries.

0:27:380:27:40

One such example is Wadworth, which is based in the town of Devizes.

0:27:400:27:45

The Victorian brewery is a landmark in the centre of the town

0:27:450:27:49

and has been brewing beer here since 1875.

0:27:490:27:52

With around 240 pubs, Wadworth hand paints all of their original signs.

0:27:550:28:01

It's a long established craft which grew in the 18th century

0:28:010:28:04

as literacy rates increased.

0:28:040:28:07

The first recorded use of the term "sign writer" was back in 1792.

0:28:070:28:13

But these days, I'm afraid there are just a handful of specialists left.

0:28:130:28:17

Jayne and Charlie are here to meet expert Paul Sullivan to

0:28:170:28:20

discover more.

0:28:200:28:22

As far as we are aware, we are the only brewery-employed

0:28:220:28:25

sign writers in the country.

0:28:250:28:26

Which we are quite proud of, really.

0:28:260:28:29

Our job is, we make the pubs look really nice on the outside.

0:28:290:28:33

Those are swing sign pictorials and these are all in gold leaf.

0:28:330:28:37

We used to spend about £700 a month on just gold leaf itself and the

0:28:370:28:42

price is always reflected on the bullion market, like anything else.

0:28:420:28:45

Excuse my ignorance, how do you actually make the gold leaf is it...

0:28:450:28:48

-We don't make it, we buy it.

-You buy it in?

0:28:480:28:50

We buy it in and it comes in little books, are you interested in gold?

0:28:500:28:54

-Yes!

-Do you want to have a go?

0:28:540:28:57

Yes, please.

0:28:570:28:58

I've never seen anyone move so quickly at the mention of gold.

0:28:580:29:02

I think our expert, Paul, will have to keep a very careful

0:29:020:29:05

eye on our Jayne.

0:29:050:29:07

Whoops! I have made a mess. Oh, I've missed a bit.

0:29:070:29:11

That's all right, you can go over it again.

0:29:110:29:12

-With another piece?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:29:120:29:14

Oh, I have got loads on there.

0:29:160:29:18

I'll put my handbag underneath when you scrape it off.

0:29:180:29:22

I'm trying to catch the gold. Look at me I'm going to catch it in me shoe.

0:29:220:29:25

Don't forget to check that shoe, Paul!

0:29:250:29:27

They make it look so easy, don't they?

0:29:320:29:35

Is it all right, does that bit need doing again?

0:29:350:29:38

That's a really tidy job, Charlie.

0:29:380:29:40

Charlie don't give up the day job,

0:29:420:29:43

best to leave it to the professionals.

0:29:430:29:45

Now, if you're planning a home swap in the glorious

0:29:450:29:48

county of Wiltshire, you too can enjoy brewery and

0:29:480:29:51

sign writing tours throughout most of the year.

0:29:510:29:55

It seems that all of that sign writing was thirsty work.

0:29:550:29:57

So, our swappers are heading to the bar to sample some

0:29:570:30:01

award-winning real ales.

0:30:010:30:03

I'm Brian Watson, head brewer at Wadworth.

0:30:030:30:05

It's my responsibility to make sure all of these beers are brewed correctly.

0:30:050:30:10

So that means you have to taste them all every day?

0:30:100:30:12

Oh, yes, that is one of the pleasures I have.

0:30:120:30:14

No wonder you are smiling all the time.

0:30:140:30:16

Oh, yes. This beer here is our most famous brand, 6X.

0:30:160:30:21

The next brand we do is Swordfish,

0:30:210:30:23

this was designed by myself about five, six years ago.

0:30:230:30:27

-And this is the one with the rum in it?

-Yes, that's right.

0:30:270:30:29

You see, I would think putting rum and beer together, you would be completely legless.

0:30:290:30:33

There are very strict rules.

0:30:330:30:35

We are not allowed to add too much rum

0:30:350:30:37

and we have to stick within the correct ABV figures.

0:30:370:30:40

Rather than describe them, let's try them. Welcome to Wadworth.

0:30:400:30:44

Cheers, thank you. It's very refreshing, isn't it?

0:30:440:30:47

It's very refreshing. It's light on your palette. It's really good.

0:30:470:30:51

We could stay here all day, you know.

0:30:510:30:53

I'm getting quite settled in here, actually.

0:30:530:30:56

-Cheers.

-Cheers.

0:30:560:30:57

-Good health.

-Cheers.

0:30:570:30:59

Cheers again.

0:30:590:31:00

Let's be honest, we all love to look in estate agent's windows

0:31:050:31:09

and check out the prices when we visit a new area.

0:31:090:31:12

And of course, Jayne is a bit of a property expert.

0:31:120:31:15

I'm trying to find some more expensive ones,

0:31:150:31:17

because I know the higher end market more, so I can compare better.

0:31:170:31:20

In Wiltshire, the average detached house price is around £300,000.

0:31:200:31:26

A semi, just under £173,000 and a terrace around £145,000.

0:31:260:31:31

Is it a semidetached?

0:31:330:31:34

Where is that one? Oh, here. Now, that's expensive for a semidetached bungalow.

0:31:340:31:38

-It is, actually.

-360. Well, if that was where we are...

0:31:380:31:41

So, in that case this would be a more pricey area.

0:31:410:31:44

-That's got a lovely garden.

-That suggests it's in town.

0:31:460:31:48

Or in the centre, £400,000.

0:31:480:31:51

Down in Falmouth, a typical detached home is around £324,000,

0:31:510:31:58

a semi just under £220,000 and a terrace around £236,000.

0:31:580:32:01

That's traditional, isn't it? That matches the style of the rest of the area.

0:32:040:32:08

And look, it's got a workshop and a studio.

0:32:080:32:10

-Oh, fantastic.

-Yeah.

0:32:100:32:12

With your detached workshop and flat, you could

0:32:120:32:14

have your friends to stay and your family to stay, as well.

0:32:140:32:17

Right, and a detached double garage. I love cars.

0:32:170:32:22

-OK, we'll settle for that one, then.

-We'll settle for that one.

0:32:220:32:24

-OK, in you go.

-If only!

0:32:240:32:26

Lesley and Dudley have made their way back to their home

0:32:340:32:36

away from home, to find out what's in store for their next day out.

0:32:360:32:41

But can they work out the clue?

0:32:410:32:43

"Dig your claws in." That doesn't mean mines, does it?

0:32:430:32:46

-Digging.

-Claws?

-Crabs.

-Crabs. Lobsters.

0:32:460:32:51

Crabs or lobsters. Let's open it and find out.

0:32:510:32:54

Open it up again.

0:32:540:32:56

Excellent! "Today you will be learning the tricks of the trade with

0:32:560:32:59

"a local lobster fisherman."

0:32:590:33:01

-Yes!

-We were right, yes!

0:33:010:33:03

-And I hope it ends with eating them, too.

-Yes!

0:33:030:33:06

Our swappers are off to the Cornish fishing village of Cadgwith.

0:33:060:33:09

Located on the Lizard Peninsular, with whitewashed cottages,

0:33:090:33:13

thatched roofs and fishing boats drawn up on the beach,

0:33:130:33:16

it epitomises what a fishing village should really look like.

0:33:160:33:20

Fishing has been the main industry since the 16th century.

0:33:200:33:23

Back then, fisherman mainly caught pilchards.

0:33:230:33:26

But today, the catch is more likely to be crab, mackerel or lobster.

0:33:260:33:31

Lesley and Dudley are meeting lobster fisherman Nigel Legg,

0:33:310:33:34

who makes traditional willow pots in his studio just along the beach.

0:33:340:33:38

-Hello.

-Hello. You must be Nigel?

-I'm Nigel.

-Nigel, I'm Dudley.

0:33:380:33:41

Welcome to Cornwall.

0:33:410:33:42

You are coming to have a go at making traditional

0:33:420:33:45

willow lobster pots.

0:33:450:33:46

I gather you're an expert?

0:33:460:33:47

I've done a few now, yeah.

0:33:470:33:49

Now it's all plastic and steel.

0:33:490:33:50

That's the old traditional willow lobster pot,

0:33:500:33:52

that's what we had to use years and years ago,

0:33:520:33:54

and that's what I make now for decoration and films and props.

0:33:540:33:59

-Oh, it's very lovely.

-Yeah, well, we'll have a go.

-Right, OK.

0:33:590:34:02

Traditional lobster pots are designed to have a one-way entrance.

0:34:060:34:09

So once the lobsters are in, there is no way out.

0:34:090:34:13

Now this is just a very simple binding over one, over one,

0:34:130:34:18

like that, over one.

0:34:180:34:20

In, out, in, out.

0:34:220:34:28

I think she's doing very well.

0:34:280:34:29

Made a few basic mistakes there, but...

0:34:290:34:31

You have to learn a new skill, don't you?

0:34:310:34:34

And that goes over the top there.

0:34:340:34:36

-I see.

-Press it down?

0:34:360:34:38

Yeah, that's it, walk around a bit further.

0:34:380:34:40

It doesn't look as easy when you do it, Dudley.

0:34:400:34:43

It's not quite as easy it looks, is it?

0:34:430:34:46

The tide is coming in.

0:34:460:34:47

The tide is coming in. The tide is coming in!

0:34:470:34:49

A-ha. A hint, I think, to get fishing

0:34:490:34:52

so we can put some of the lobster pots to the test.

0:34:520:34:55

And if you like the sound of lobster fishing,

0:34:550:34:57

scenic boat trips from Cadgwith Cove are available to the public.

0:34:570:35:01

Are we likely to see any other wildlife in the sea?

0:35:020:35:05

Last year I saw a big minke whale come up the side of the boat.

0:35:060:35:10

Really?

0:35:100:35:11

Basking sharks you see, they're sort of gone now.

0:35:110:35:14

You might see a seal.

0:35:140:35:16

You just never know what you are going to see, really.

0:35:160:35:18

Maybe we'll just stick to the lobsters.

0:35:180:35:21

-Right, first pot.

-Right.

0:35:230:35:25

First pot.

0:35:260:35:27

Wow, what a collection. A lobster.

0:35:330:35:37

-Two lobsters

-Two lobsters.

0:35:370:35:38

Two lobsters, two crabs, three crabs.

0:35:380:35:40

Spider crab. That one's too small.

0:35:400:35:44

Too small.

0:35:440:35:45

So it's got to go back.

0:35:450:35:47

Lucky chap.

0:35:470:35:48

Baby rockling. Velvet crab.

0:35:490:35:55

Velvet! Isn't it? Velvet crab, right!

0:35:550:35:58

-One lobster.

-It's blue.

0:35:580:36:01

They are all blue until they are cooked.

0:36:010:36:04

I'm finally holding a lobster, it's wet, it's cold and it's alive.

0:36:040:36:08

-And it's blue and it's beautiful.

-Yes.

0:36:080:36:11

That's your dinner.

0:36:110:36:12

He's listening! Not in front of the lobster.

0:36:120:36:16

I've never actually held a lobster like this, ever before.

0:36:160:36:20

-But we've got more to do.

-Yes!

0:36:200:36:23

I found this the best experience possible.

0:36:230:36:25

I can't imagine a better trip or a better outing.

0:36:250:36:28

And also it's part of this house swap that we are doing

0:36:280:36:32

and something we probably wouldn't have done on our own.

0:36:320:36:36

I'm a bit sorry for the lobsters. But the whole experience of being here, on the sea,

0:36:360:36:41

in this place, is mind-blowing. I love it.

0:36:410:36:46

Home swapping seems to have really caught

0:36:460:36:48

the imagination of our couple.

0:36:480:36:50

And as we are by the coast, what better way to finish things off,

0:36:500:36:53

than for Lesley to get her wish of eating that fresh lobster?

0:36:530:36:57

-Cheers.

-Cornwall and lobster.

-Cornwall.

0:36:570:36:59

This is so delicious.

0:37:030:37:04

Back in Wiltshire, the adventure is almost over.

0:37:100:37:13

But do Jayne and Charlie know who lives in a house like this?

0:37:130:37:17

I think the people who live here are retired.

0:37:170:37:20

I think they are bit like me, late sixties.

0:37:200:37:23

I'm assuming it's him

0:37:230:37:24

and not his wife, but I think he loves classical music.

0:37:240:37:26

I can just imagine a Morse type character, you know, off the telly.

0:37:260:37:30

The lady of the house I think is a very homely person.

0:37:300:37:33

Anybody could turn up and they could feed the 5,000.

0:37:330:37:38

We think they are about our age. They are very social people.

0:37:380:37:43

The house is almost as though it's a party house, isn't it?

0:37:430:37:47

I imagine that they have lots of people here.

0:37:470:37:50

I have got a feeling that this is Jayne's house.

0:37:500:37:52

It emanates this personality with bright, cheerful...

0:37:520:37:56

So clearly, houses are her passion and we're lucky enough to share that

0:37:560:38:00

while we're here.

0:38:000:38:01

It's the final day.

0:38:110:38:12

In Wiltshire, Jayne and Charlie are thinking of home.

0:38:140:38:17

I have really enjoyed myself here but I can't wait to go

0:38:170:38:20

and get back to normality and I have really missed looking at the sea.

0:38:200:38:23

However, a longer period would have... We would have got to know

0:38:230:38:26

the area a bit better. Yes, because it is lovely.

0:38:260:38:29

Meanwhile, in Falmouth, Lesley

0:38:290:38:31

and Dudley are reflecting on their stay in their seaside home.

0:38:310:38:35

I shall be sad to go.

0:38:350:38:37

We've had a good time and the weather is still brilliant,

0:38:370:38:40

quite brilliant.

0:38:400:38:42

It has been a tremendous experience. This is a lovely place.

0:38:420:38:45

Cornwall is absolutely lovely.

0:38:450:38:48

As well as offering a new experience,

0:38:480:38:50

home swapping also saves a lot of money.

0:38:500:38:53

In Wiltshire, for example, a good quality B&B could set you

0:38:530:38:57

back around £225 for three nights.

0:38:570:39:00

While in Falmouth, a similar stay could set you back around £210.

0:39:010:39:06

If you had let strangers stay in your house, wouldn't you

0:39:100:39:14

want to know exactly what they thought of it?

0:39:140:39:16

Well, I certainly would.

0:39:160:39:17

So, our swappers are about to see how their guests got on,

0:39:170:39:20

and more importantly, what they had to say about their home.

0:39:200:39:24

First up, Jayne and Charlie meet Lesley and Dudley.

0:39:250:39:29

-Hello, I'm Dudley.

-And I'm Lesley.

0:39:290:39:32

-I'm 71 years old.

-I'm much younger than that.

0:39:320:39:36

They look like a lovely couple.

0:39:360:39:39

-Amazing hanging baskets. We couldn't achieve anything like that could we?

-No.

0:39:390:39:43

We've got a little secret. Her lovely comments about our hanging baskets.

0:39:430:39:47

We bought them in the garden centre.

0:39:470:39:48

That's why they look so nice.

0:39:480:39:51

It is absolutely immaculate, everything is clean

0:39:510:39:54

and matching and...

0:39:540:39:55

And it's very fresh and bright.

0:39:550:39:57

What are they going to think about our house?

0:39:570:39:59

That's exactly what we said.

0:39:590:40:02

Ah, look at this room! Oh, Dudley, this is smashing.

0:40:020:40:06

I love the bed. I love all of the fitted everythings.

0:40:060:40:09

I love the colour of it.

0:40:090:40:11

I am so thrilled that they liked my interior,

0:40:110:40:13

because their house is really warm and cosy and family orientated.

0:40:130:40:17

I cannot begin to tell you how good that makes me feel.

0:40:170:40:21

It's a tremendous garden. It's my sort of a garden.

0:40:210:40:24

This is compact.

0:40:240:40:25

Now all I have got to do is persuade Lesley.

0:40:250:40:28

He couldn't pick a better place to come and live than Falmouth.

0:40:280:40:31

Little small garden, manageable, not too much work.

0:40:310:40:34

Do you know what I think this might do?

0:40:340:40:36

I think he might persuade her to move to something more modern and more easy, and I think it might

0:40:360:40:41

make me try and make this a little more welcoming and homely.

0:40:410:40:45

Back in Wiltshire, and Lesley

0:40:460:40:47

and Dudley are about to meet their fellow swappers.

0:40:470:40:50

Let's hope they like our house. It would be awful if they said they hated it.

0:40:500:40:53

Hi, fellow home swappers, my name is Jayne, with a Y,

0:40:530:40:56

and I am 57 years old.

0:40:560:40:58

Hello, I'm Charlie Choke, and I am 67 years old.

0:40:580:41:01

They are real people and they were here just recently.

0:41:010:41:04

It's very odd, it's very odd.

0:41:040:41:06

Very bright walls and there's a lot of smudgy painting

0:41:080:41:14

-and it's very sort of 1980s.

-1980s?

She's exactly right, though. That's what that painting is,

0:41:170:41:20

you've wanted me to change it for ages.

0:41:200:41:22

I like everything about this, because this is my taste, not yours.

0:41:220:41:25

That's your taste.

0:41:250:41:26

I like things like that. This to me, it's fantastic, yes.

0:41:260:41:29

-He likes the house.

-Nice Charlie.

0:41:290:41:32

-I like pine tables.

-You do, that's lovely.

0:41:320:41:34

We got a pine table, you painted it blue.

0:41:340:41:36

Paint it blue!

0:41:360:41:37

Working kitchen is ideal.

0:41:370:41:40

I think you are going to come home and try and make me

0:41:400:41:42

make my kitchen more warm.

0:41:420:41:45

I like that bloke. I do like him.

0:41:450:41:48

Oh, this is an interesting shape, isn't it? Nice bonnet ceiling.

0:41:480:41:52

I like that.

0:41:520:41:53

I like that.

0:41:530:41:54

It is weird to see a strange couple in your house.

0:41:540:41:57

In your bedroom.

0:41:570:41:59

Do you know, this house gets more interesting as you go around.

0:41:590:42:01

I love that piece of furniture.

0:42:010:42:03

There is some lovely furniture.

0:42:030:42:05

-I was feeling worried that it was too...

-Boring, you said.

0:42:050:42:08

Boring and austere. Maybe it is quite nice.

0:42:080:42:10

I feel better about that

0:42:100:42:11

but I am definitely going to change the paint in the hall soon.

0:42:110:42:14

You were laughing at me saying our garden is too small for a vegetable garden.

0:42:140:42:17

I could do this on that piece of patio.

0:42:170:42:19

This is absolutely stunning.

0:42:190:42:22

Stunning garden.

0:42:220:42:23

I'm very happy that they loved the garden and I love their garden.

0:42:230:42:27

It's very nice to see that they liked our garden and I hope they really did.

0:42:270:42:30

I hope they really, really enjoyed the house. And we loved being in Falmouth.

0:42:300:42:34

So, it's probably been quite a good exchange for both of us, hopefully.

0:42:340:42:39

The question is, do our couples fancy home swapping again?

0:42:390:42:43

I think this has confirmed our ideas that a home swap is actually

0:42:430:42:46

a brilliant way of having a holiday.

0:42:460:42:48

You get more than you would get from just staying in a hotel.

0:42:480:42:50

You really feel you live in somebody's house,

0:42:500:42:53

and in somebody's place and you get a much better experience

0:42:530:42:55

Actually, I would home swap in that particular home again

0:42:550:42:58

because it is now familiar to me.

0:42:580:43:00

I feel more comfortable now that I have been there,

0:43:000:43:02

and you get a little bit accustomed to where you are going

0:43:020:43:05

and actually, at the end of the day, I quite enjoyed it.

0:43:050:43:07

Ha-ha!

0:43:070:43:09

If they ever come this way they are very welcome, aren't they?

0:43:090:43:12

Yes, of course.

0:43:120:43:14

They are very welcome to come and see us and we will have a drink together and have a talk about this

0:43:140:43:18

whole experience we shared.
