Now on BBC News, The Travel Show. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
This week on The Travel Show, we're in Bermuda. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Coming up: | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
as the America's Cup reaches its nail-biting climax | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
above the water this weekend, we find out if a robot can stop | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
the drama unfolding underneath, as an invasion of these | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
creatures wreaks havoc on the local ecosystem. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:33
So he's not expecting you to electrocute him and slurp him | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
into a tube. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:36
And I'll be finding out how the best way to beat these venomous invaders | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
is to eat them. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Once you remove the spines, you move them from malicious to delicious. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:49
Hello, welcome to The Travel Show, with me, Ade Adepitan. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
This week, we're coming to you from Bermuda, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
which this year is hosting one of the world's biggest sporting | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
events, the America's Cup, right here in the North Atlantic | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
Ocean. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:44
The America's Cup is the Formula 1 of the boat world, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
the most prestigious event in sailing. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:54
Over the past few weeks, six international teams have been | 0:01:54 | 0:01:59
racing across the waters of Bermuda's Great Sound | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
in superfast hydrofoil catamarans. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:06
And this weekend, the competition reaches its dramatic climax, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
with the start of the finals, when the titleholders, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
Team Oracle from the USA, face their challengers for the cup. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:22
It is so exciting to be here. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
There's a real buzz in the air. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
Now,over there, some of the teams are practising and I've never seen | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
boats like this before. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
When they raise up out of the ocean on their hydrofoils, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
it's just an incredible sight. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
They are so fast, so awesome - it's like they're flying | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
across the sea. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
This is a massive event and it's the first time Bermuda has | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
hosted the Cup. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
Tens of thousands of spectators have headed here, plus an estimated 50 | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
million people around the world are watching on TV. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
But here in Bermuda, the spotlight isn't just on what's | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
happening above the water - what's going on underneath the waves | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
is being seen as as important. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:12
The water is obviously our playing field, so obviously it's | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
within our own interests to highlight the issues | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
that there have been globally with plastics in the ocean. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
It's forecast that by 2050, there could be more plastic | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
in the ocean than fish. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
That's scary. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:33
Clearly, that's a major issue that we've got to get on top of. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
I think through sailing, through the America's Cup, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
if we can help to highlight some of these issues and also some | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
of the solutions to it. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:44
The numbers are mind-boggling. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:45
It's estimated there are now 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
across the world's oceans. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
But whilst waste and pollution are a huge concern, they aren't | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
the only things impacting on the environment here in Bermuda. | 0:03:53 | 0:04:00
This place is gorgeous, but beneath these beautiful waters, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
a species is lurking that is having an absolutely devastating effect | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
the ecosystem here. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:12
It's a creature that is presenting the biggest challenge to marine | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
life in Bermuda. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:25
They are called lionfish. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30
They're striking to look at, but they don't belong | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
in the Atlantic. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
They are native to the coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:39
Scientists reckon they may have ended up in these waters | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
after being released by aquarium owners. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
But here, they have no natural predators, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
so their numbers have grown | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
and they are now rapidly destroying the ocean's marine life. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:56
They're extremely gluttonous. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
They can just overconsume at an exorbitant rate | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
and the problem with that is that the fish that lives | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
in the Atlantic Ocean don't recognise the lionfish | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
is a potential threat, and so the lionfish just | 0:05:07 | 0:05:11
opens its mouth and gobbles in all of these little tiny fish | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
and it's having a huge impact on fish populations around | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
the Caribbean and western Atlantic. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:23
Wow! | 0:05:23 | 0:05:25 | |
That is cold! | 0:05:25 | 0:05:30
The marine life here is stunning but if something isn't done | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
to protect the ecosystem from the invasion of lionfish, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
this could all be destroyed. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
Experts here believe the only way to control the lionfish population | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
is too cull. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
-- is to cull them. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
Humans put these lionfish in the ecosystem, they didn't arrive | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
there naturally, and the rate of expansion of the population | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
as well as their consumption rate means that they are having a huge | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
impact on the ecosystem and the ecosystem can't evolve fast | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
enough to deal with this new species. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
And since we put it there, it's our problem to try | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
to control it. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
Conservation groups such as the Reef Environmental Education Foundation | 0:06:16 | 0:06:23
regularly organise and sanction fishing trips aimed | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
at reducing the population. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
Uniquely, here in Bermuda, these lionfish tend to congregate | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
in very deep waters, so it's really hard for fishermen | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
to catch them in large numbers, but now it's hoped that pioneering | 0:06:34 | 0:06:39
technology could provide a more effective answer. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:48
This is one of our prototypes of a robot that we've built | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
to go overboard. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:57
You sit down at your computer screen, just like you're playing | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
a game, and you can see through the camera and you drive it | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
down, look for a lionfish, put the lionfish between the electrodes, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
push the stun button and the lionfish will lock up | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
with the electricity so it can't move, then you push another button | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
and suck it up into the tube and go looking for the next lionfish. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:20
Each robot can scoop up around 15 lionfish in a single trip and, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:25
crucially, the final design will operate well below depths that | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
can be reached by divers. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Down to 1,000 feet. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
Hold on a sec, though. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
I mean, if I was a lionfish and suddenly this thing came | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
towards me, I'd be like, I'd be off, goodbye. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
Actually, the best way to approach them is from above, | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
from in front, towards the spikes, and he'll basically say, | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
come on, then, deal with the spikes. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
He's not expecting you to electrocute him and slurp him | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
into a tube. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:02
Hunting the lionfish here might seem to go against our usual idea | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
of conservation which is aimed at conserving rather than destroying | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
marine wildlife, but by controlling the lionfish population now, | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
scientists say that will give the underwater ecosystem a chance | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
to repair, evolve and adapt and remain here for generations to come. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:23
And the America's Cup has been a catalyst for a few other | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
sustainability projects here in Bermuda, including... | 0:08:45 | 0:08:52
A new zero-emissions hire car for tourists. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
Currently, visitors to the island have to rely on taxis, | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
scooters and ferries, as they're not allowed to rent cars, | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
but these environmentally friendly two-seaters could provide a solution | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
for people who want to get around this 22-mile island independently. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:13
The National Museum of Bermuda is finding that being | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
green is cheaper. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
In May, they installed nearly 200 solar panels. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
This initiative is generating 93,000 kWh of clean energy, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:28
as well as cutting their electricity bill by a fifth. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:36
And finally, I got to try out a novel way to help solve | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
the problem of plastic rubbish finding its way into the sea. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
It's called a sea bin. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:48
It operates like a garbage can or a rubbish bin. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
And it's designed so that it doesn't impact fish. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:56
The debris is drawn to it because of the way the water | 0:09:56 | 0:10:01
is circulating and the net actually catches it. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:07
Very simple. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:08
The current draws it in and it's captured by the sea bed. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
I thought it would be more technical than that. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
No, it's very simple. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:22
Current, water, in the bin. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:23
And that just goes to show, some of the simple solutions | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
are the best. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:27
The Travel Show, your essential guide, wherever you're heading. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30

In the US, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
DC is celebrating its 50 year anniversary, a free event that takes | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
place around the 4th July holiday. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
This year, there will be circus arts, with a behind-the-scenes look | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
at the generations of families involved in this business. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
There will also be a focus on craft, with chainsaw carvers to religious | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
scroll painters to silversmiths and much of the music, | 0:11:54 | 0:11:56
dance and storytelling will be themed around | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
the issue of migration. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
The event begins June 29th, playing through July 4th, | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
then again July 6th-9th. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
If you're looking for more petrol fuelled fun, then head to southern | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
Africa where the Put Foot Rally runs from now until July 4th, | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
taking in five countries and 8000 kilometres. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
People from all over the world come to take part in this epic road trip | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
in a quirky collection of vehicles. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:27
The car crews meet up for organised pit stop parties along the way, | 0:12:27 | 0:12:32
as well as taking part in hands-on charity work as they race | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
to the finish line. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
And finally, if you're visiting London and are looking for a more | 0:12:37 | 0:12:42
leisurely way to spend your weekend, why not take in the just completed | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
Line Sculpture Walk? | 0:12:46 | 0:12:46
Peel away the layers of East London to encounter 13 works by artists | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
such as Damien Hirst and Martin Creed along a route that | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
has been designed to encourage both locals and tourists to engage | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
with contemporary art whilst discovering lesser known facts | 0:12:56 | 0:12:58
about a fascinating part of the city. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:00
That's my global guide this month. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
Let me know what's happening in a place where you live | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
or where you love. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:06
We are on e-mail and across social media. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
Until next time, happy travelling. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:09
Earlier in the show, | 0:13:09 | 0:13:09
Earlier in the show, I found out about the race to catch | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
as many lionfish as possible in the waters around Bermuda before | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
they destroy the island's coral reefs. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
Wow, look at that beauty. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:29
Good job. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:33
Yes. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35 | |
Part of the problem they've got on their hands here is that locals | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
aren't keen on eating this rather scary looking and venomous fish | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
and that's why they started a project called Eat Them To Beat | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
Them. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:45 | |
This summer, celebrity chefs from all over the world have been | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
competing to invent the tastiest lionfish dish. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:49
And there's also been special training for Bermuda's up | 0:13:50 | 0:13:54
and coming chefs. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
So, is it safe to eat lionfish? | 0:13:57 | 0:14:05
It definitely is safe to eat. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
Once you remove these spines, you move them | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
from malicious to delicious. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
Does that help you out? | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
I like that. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:16
Malicious to delicious. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:20
Chef Ming has been teaching at Bermuda College for 20 years | 0:14:20 | 0:14:25
but he's only just added lionfish preparation to be curriculum. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
The students are cooking up a whole range of lionfish dishes from tacos | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
to fish and chips and Chef tells me he's got a plan of what to do | 0:14:31 | 0:14:36
with all this lovely grub. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:37
Today, it's a special opportunity to have you guys here. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
It's Bermuda day. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:41
A beautiful day. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
There will be thousands of people lining the streets | 0:14:43 | 0:14:47
to watch our parade and what we're going to do today is leave | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
Bermuda College and give free samples. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
That's the best price. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
That's one way to get it on board, the people who haven't tried it. | 0:14:57 | 0:15:01
Free. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03 | |
Then they can spread the word about the goodness of the lionfish. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:07
So, what's your plan for this bad boy? | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
Well, this bad boy, I'm going to remove the spines, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
then fillet it so I end up with two sides, then I was going to flatten | 0:15:13 | 0:15:17
the fillets and stuff them with lobster Thermidor, | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
so we have a lobster Thermidor stuffed lionfish. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
OK, well, let's see you do it then. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:28
The first thing that you want to do is remove the spines. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:33
Are they quite tough? | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
They are quite tough. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
Is it OK to touch? | 0:15:39 | 0:15:44
It is OK to touch but try not to puncture yourself. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:48
They are like little needles. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
Those spines can deliver a nasty sting, so these patients need to be | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
handled with care. | 0:15:55 | 0:16:01
By teaching the students here how to deal with the needles, | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
it is hoped they'll take their lionfish skills | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
to the restaurants of Bermuda when they graduate. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
Don't you mess with the environment again. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
Yeah, look at you now. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:12
Oh, this looks amazing. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:13
Have a try. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
Are you sure? | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
Sure, go for it. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:18
Oh, wow. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:22
That is so tasty. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:27
Chef, you've done a wonderful job. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
Thank you very much. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
I appreciate that. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:45
It's got an interesting texture. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
It tastes rich and I think that would go really well with a lovely | 0:16:47 | 0:16:52
glass of wine. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
I agree. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
We should take this out to the parade, all of this food, | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
because it looks good, and we should give the people | 0:17:00 | 0:17:05
a taste of lionfish. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:10
Absolutely. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
In Bermuda's capital, Hamilton, the streets are ram packed | 0:17:13 | 0:17:15
with locals and tourists. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:20
This is just incredible. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
Bermuda Day, everybody is out, the sun is out. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
I'm loving it. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
The atmosphere is just awesome. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:30
Today marks the start of summer and it seems the whole island's out | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
here celebrating, although they probably weren't expecting me | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
to crash the party with a plate of lionfish. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
So, have you tried lionfish before? | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
Why not? | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
I don't think it's something we should eat. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
Why do you think it's something we shouldn't eat? | 0:17:46 | 0:17:51
Lion and fish together don't work. | 0:17:51 | 0:18:00
Try it. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:04
I heard it was poisonous. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:08
Not too good to eat. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
Have you ever thought about eating them? | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
No, but I have heard they are delicious. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
Well, we have some lionfish here for you to sample. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:19
A wonderful taste. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
I love it. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:23
Be honest, now. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:28
It tastes good. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:34
Yeah? | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37 | |
If you don't tell people up front and you let them try it first, | 0:18:37 | 0:18:45
I'm sure they'll be back. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
Sometimes people just get turned off because of the name. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
I love it. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:57
It tastes better than what I thought. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
I think I would eat some more after this. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
And we are honoured because even the Premier of Bermuda is willing | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
to give it a try. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:06
Have you ever tried lionfish, Premier Michael Dunkley? | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
No, I have not. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:10
Why not, there is an abundance of them here in Bermuda? | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
You know what, that is a very good question because I love fish. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
With the focus on lionfish and the challenges it | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
causes our environment and marine life just starting to become more | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
prevalent, and there are a couple of local places that sell it | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
and I hear it's really good, so I'd love to try it. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
I have got a sample for you. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
Are you going to tell me what you think of it? | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
It looks good. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:34
It's a lionfish fishcake. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:38
It's great. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:39
Yeah? | 0:19:39 | 0:19:39 | |
Because there is this big deal about the lionfish and eating | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
the lionfish here in Bermuda. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
What will it take to change attitudes? | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
What you are doing now. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:51
Once people try it, I think people will stay with it. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
In Bermuda, we have fish all year round, so it's just a matter | 0:19:54 | 0:19:58
of getting people comfortable with the fish and lionfish | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
will certainly be on people's plates. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
And tourists can help too. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:03
Dive courses that teach you how to catch lionfish are available | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
at centres throughout the island. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
For those that prefer to stick on dry land, | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
keep an eye out for lionfish on restaurant menus and you can also | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
attend one of the cook off tournaments that happen | 0:20:16 | 0:20:20
throughout the summer. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:28
Well, I have had such a wonderful time here. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
This whole island is quite literally bursting to life to celebrate | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
Bermuda Day. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:40
The atmosphere is incredible and as for lionfish, | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
judging by the responses that I've had speaking to people today, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
I think it's going to become a regular feature on dining tables | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
all over this island. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
But listen, sadly that's your lot for this week. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
Make sure you join us next week when... | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
I'll be looking back at some of our favourite trips so far this | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
year, from dancing monks in India to getting to grips with these | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
lively reindeer in Lapland. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:14
Look at him. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
So make sure you join us for that if you can. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
And in the meantime, you can keep up with all our travels | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
on the road in real time by following us on social media. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
All the details are on your screen right now. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:34
But for now, from me, Ade Adepitan and all The Travel Show | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
team here in Bermuda, it's goodbye. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
I've got a party to go to. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41
See you later. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:49 |
