Coming up on this week's Travel Show: | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
Is this the original costume? | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
We're on the Bruce Lee trail in Hong Kong. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
He wore this in Game of Death. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
Get ready to get behind this taxi... | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
I get a lesson in how to take iconic Instagram images from an expert. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:24
Oh, that's good. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
With new laptop bans on international flights, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
we look at the gadgets you can still take on board. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
Lee Jun-fan, better known as Bruce Lee, may have been born | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
in San Francisco, but in the early 1970s, he put both kung fu | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
and Hong Kong on the map. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
# Everybody was kung fu fighting #. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
After starring in a succession of cult martial arts movies, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
he became the most famous Asian film star in the world. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
And today, almost 45 years since his untimely death | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
at the age of 32, he is still credited as being the man | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
who brought Chinese actors and martial arts | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
into the mainstream. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
Here in Hong Kong, they're rightly proud of their most famous son. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:46
Now, the film that really shot Bruce Lee to international stardom | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
was Enter the Dragon in 1973, shot mainly on location | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
here in Hong Kong. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
And if you're a fan of the film, you might recognise this place, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
King Yin Lei. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
But if you're a real die-hard Bruce Lee fan, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
you'll need to go to Hong Kong's Heritage Museum | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
for a unique insight into his legendary life. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:17
Wow, look at these nunchucks! | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
Oh, my goodness! | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
Yeah, nunchucks is one of a very significant symbol of Bruce. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:26
You can see he practiced this kind of weapons | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
when he taught his students. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:34
And then you can see in his first TV programme, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
The Green Hornet. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
Is this the original costume? | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
Yeah, yeah. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
This is also the iconic costume. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
You can see he wore this in the Game of Death. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:52
Game of Death. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
Yeah. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:55 | |
Then nowadays, you can still see many people who wear this costume | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
as a symbol of Bruce. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
Fellow martial arts film actor Victor Kan studied under the iconic | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
Wing Chun master, Ip Man. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
And he remembers the very first time he met Bruce Lee at a training | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
session back in the mid 1950s. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
He can pick up the movement, things, very quick. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:17
And because that time was also a social thing, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
"Oh, Wing Chun, we doing all that, all the teenagers in the school." | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
But I can say that he done the cha-cha-cha better than Wing | 0:03:25 | 0:03:30
Chun at that time! | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
He was the champion. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:36
The dance? | 0:03:36 | 0:03:37
Yeah. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39 | |
Exactly! | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
What do you think Bruce would think about this exhibition, | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
some 40 years after his death? | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
Not big enough. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
Should be bigger? | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Oh, yes! | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
You don't know how impressive he is still in the whole wide world. | 0:03:53 | 0:04:01
Inspired to learn some killer kung fu moves myself, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
I head to the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
where I've got a date with a man who's passionate about studying | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
and preserving Chinese martial arts. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
MUSIC. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:24
First, the warm up. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
This is the horse stance. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
Orse. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37 | |
-- Horse. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:38
Am I low enough? | 0:04:38 | 0:04:39
Yes, you are. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
Right, I don't know if I can get up now. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
This is the bow stance. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:52
Horse stance. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:53
Horse stance. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
Let's change again. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
This feels more like a workout than a warm up. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
Not sure if I'll be able to walk tomorrow. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
Time to step things up a bit. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
I punch you here, you block with this one. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
OK. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07 | |
OK. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:07 | |
Yeah, good. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:08
Now you punch. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:13
OK. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:14 | |
Whoa. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18 | |
I get it now. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20
I think I'm going to have a bruise on my arm. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
Now prepare to enter the dragon. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:31
MUSIC. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:32
Once upon a time, there were hundreds of small martial arts | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
studios like this all over Hong Kong. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
But that's not the case anymore. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
A lot of kung fu schools were actually run in a space | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
like this which, unfortunately, over the past 20, 30 years have | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
become very unaffordable to the average teacher who simply | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
cannot find enough students to justify the rent. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
So I think the first and foremost problem people face in Hong Kong, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
when you talk about continuing the practice of kung fu, | 0:05:57 | 0:06:02
is lack of space. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
This is the blue house. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:07
You can't see very much, unfortunately, because of all | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
the building work. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
If you're a real martial arts fan, though, there are still some places | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
to see here in Hong Kong that Bruce Lee would have recognised | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
and maybe even trained at. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:19
Over there, there's a plaque which says the name of a kung fu | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
master whose entire family lived here. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:29
He organises a kung fu festival here in Hong Kong to keep interest | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
in martial arts alive, and reclaiming some of the heritage | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
he feels has been lost. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
This place used to buzz with kung fu until I would say | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
probably 1970s, 1980s. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
Wow! | 0:06:48 | 0:06:49 | |
This was one of the really big hubs of kung fu in Hong Kong. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
That's amazing. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:53
I can't imagine seeing people doing kung fu on the streets. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Exactly, but that's what really breathed life into the Hong Kong | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
community and that's why kung fu was so vibrant. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
If you know where to look, you can still find authentic | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
classes, like this one, given by master Li Tin Loi, | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
taking place in some of the remaining studios here. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
But it's not just a question of space and high rents that's | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
threatening the survival of martial arts in Hong Kong. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:21
The new generation, they want everything speed. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
They don't have time. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:30
They want to learn kung fu any style you make possible in two weeks. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
It is not possible. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
Impossible thing. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:36
But they have no time. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
Recognising that Hong Kong's kung fu heritage is under threat, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
a local university has called on some of the surviving martial | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
arts masters of Bruce Lee's generation to take part in a unique | 0:07:47 | 0:07:53
project, using modern motion-capture technology to document and preserve | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
the traditional move that's could one day be lost. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:03
Let's say 50 years or 100 years from now, there's suddenly a burst | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
of new interest in martial arts, these documents, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
which we are creating now, are going to be templates for future | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
generations to work with. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
That's what we're really looking to the long-term future. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:28
Go! | 0:08:28 | 0:08:29 | |
There's no doubt that films like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
and the Ip Man Trilogy have helped to rekindle an interest | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
in martial arts. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:36
Whoa! | 0:08:36 | 0:08:37 | |
It's like a concrete block, that is! | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
But it's hoped that the motion-capture programme | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
here at the university | 0:08:43 | 0:08:44
will ensure that kung fu and the legend of Bruce Lee survives | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
for generations to come, both here in Hong Kong | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
and around the world. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
Well, if you're thinking of heading to Hong Kong any time soon, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
here's some Travel Show tips to help you on your way. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
Although this year marks the 20th anniversary of the handover | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
between Britain and China, travellers from many countries | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
still don't need to apply for a visa to visit Hong Kong. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:15
As ever, check before you book to make sure you're from one | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
of those visa waiver countries, but remember that you will | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
definitely need a visa if you plan to travel on to mainland China | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
from Hong Kong. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
Chinese New Year is always a good time to visit, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
though you might need to book well in advance | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
as hotels are busy. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:35
Remember, that summers here can be hot and humid. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
Bear that in mind, too. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
There's no shortage of cheap and effective ways to get around | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
Hong Kong Island and neighbouring Chau Lei, but if you're looking | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
for something a little more traditional, why not jump aboard one | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
of these iconic trams? | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
Also known as ding-dings. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
The trams operate on six routes every day between Kennedy Town | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
and all of the main tourist attractions on Hong Kong Island. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
There you go, ding-ding. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:06
If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
don't forget Hong Kong is surrounded by dozens of smaller, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:14
less developed islands, so it's often just a short ferry | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
ride away to some peace and quiet or an empty beach. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:26
Stay with us, because still to come here on the Travel Show: | 0:10:26 | 0:10:31
As new security measures stop you boarding some flights | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
with laptops and tablets, Lucy's here with clever tech | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
to take on board. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
What are the best apps to keep me entertained on a long-haul flight? | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
Zoom in a bit, not too much. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:46
Zoom in a little bit, not too much. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
Not too much. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
There you go! | 0:10:52 | 0:10:53
I get some tips on how to become an Instagram sensation here in Hong | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
Kong. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57 | |
You could do a street shot with an amazing purple sky that | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
would just blow up. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:01
So don't go away. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:02
The Travel Show, your essential guide wherever you're heading. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Laptops, tablets and e-readers are all now banned on many flights | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
to the US and UK primarily from airports in the Middle East. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:23
Both governments have brought in new rules affecting | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
different countries, so check first if you're flying | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
from any of these places. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
But there are still some gadgets you can use to wile away the hours. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
This week, our run down of the gadgets you can | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
still use on board. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
And here's the good news, on some flights you should be allowed | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
to take hand-held games consoles. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
So I've been using our state-of-the-art isolation booth | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
to see how they fare. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
So this is the new big player on the market, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
it's the Nintendo Switch. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
So the Switch isn't like regular consoles where it combines | 0:11:57 | 0:11:59
portable on-the-go gaming with traditional | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
console-style gaming. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
On the one hand, you connect it to your TV. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
But when you're ready to take it on the move, | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
you can simply slide the controllers in the side. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
The graphics look really good. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
What I like as well is that you can connect up to eight conceals. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:17
Let's say you're travelling with a load of friends, | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
you can connect your consoles together for true | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
multiplayer-style gaming. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:22
But I must warn you, games are pricey. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
Bear that in mind if you're going to pick one of these up. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:29
I would still be careful, though. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:30
So if you're on a UK-bound British Airways flight | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
from the Middle East, you can take these devices on board. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:36
White Jet2 says you can't. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:37
It's worth checking with your airline before you fly. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
If you're flying to the US, these devices are definitely off | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
the table and all you've got for entertainment will | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
be your trusty mobile. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
So while you're in the air, don't think of this as a smartphone, | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
this is your entertainment centre. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:53
So it will pay to choose your apps carefully before you travel. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
Something James here is an expert in. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
James, what are the best apps to keep me entertained | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
on a long-haul flight? | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
Here's pocketcasts. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
This gives you like feature content, so these are tailored by pocketcast | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
to give you the best new podcasts around. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
There's trending stuff. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
If something is really popular, that would appear there at the top. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
Everyone's heard of Netflix. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
They now do offline functionality. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
So you can download a whole TV series to your phone and you can | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
watch it on the flight. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:26
For my last choice, I've gone with Lonely Planet city guides. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
It gives you information for wherever you're landing. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
You get a city guide that you can access offline. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
You don't need to connect to roaming data. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
You can get places to see, eat and even hotel locations. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:41
It's all there ready and waiting for you. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
No need to connect to the internet again. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
What about battery life? | 0:13:45 | 0:13:46
Depends on what you're going to be using. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
If you're using Netflix, that's going to take a lot of battery. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
For podcasts, your phone will be sat idle in your pocket | 0:13:51 | 0:13:54
and just playing audio. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:59
It won't take that much battery. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
You may want to take a charging cable because some flights allow | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
you to charge in the seat. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:05
If you're flying for a grown-up reason, maybe you're away | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
on business, games and apps aren't going to cut it. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
This is the Moleskine smart writing set. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
Yes it looks like a bog standard pen and note pad | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
but it's smarter than that, because it can transfer | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
your writing, doodles and scribbles into digital form. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
It can even turn them into text by a dedicated application. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
Once you start writing, the app is able to register | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
the strokes on the pen. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
It knows that you're hand writing and immediately shows | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
you what you're writing on the app. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
You have to press the pen quite hard in order for it to register. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:41
It seems pretty quick, pretty automatic. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
I also can't draw! | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
It's fun, really easy to use. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
I've got to admit, it's cool seeing your scribbles | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
transferred into digital form. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
But the question is - what's wrong with a regular note | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
pad and pen and taking a picture afterwards? | 0:14:57 | 0:15:03
Since it was first launched in 2010, Instagram has become one | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
of the world's hottest places to upload and share travel photos | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
and here in Hong Kong, former Londoner, Edward Barnieh, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
is one of the most liked and shared online photographers, | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
capturing the hustle and bustle of the city through his camera lens. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:24
I went to meet him to pick up some tips. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:32
This isn't the usual place that most tourists take photos in Hong Kong. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:36
No. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:36 | |
Why are we here? | 0:15:36 | 0:15:37
These are the back streets of Hong Kong. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
It's very gritty. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:42
It's real life. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:48
Great thing about Hong Kong is that there's no back of house. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
Basically, whatever anyone's doing, they're doing it right in your face, | 0:15:51 | 0:15:54
alongside people getting on buses and coming home from school. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:59
But it's so dreary and it's raining. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
How are you going to get pictures? | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
Dreary is good. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:03
You're going to get people walking with umbrellas. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
You're going to get people soaking wet with no umbrellas. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
Reflections of the lights as the lights come on at night. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
Reflection in puddles. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:13
Rain is perfect for photography. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:23
I just got a smartphone, is this OK for pictures? | 0:16:23 | 0:16:26
Yes, they're great. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:27
I started with a smartphone that had much worse quality camera than that. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:32
I was able to capture, with good light, a number of things. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
Yes the focal length is fixed. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:37
It makes you choose your composition wisely, but it's a great tool | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
to learn on before you move onto a camera. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
Zoom in a little bit. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
Not too much. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:46
Yeah. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48 | |
There you go, real life. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
As Edward has over 175,000 Instagram followers, | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
I'm in safe hands, as we head off on our side street safari. | 0:16:54 | 0:17:01
With so much going on around us, I'm having problems | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
deciding what to focus on. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
It just seems messy to me. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:07
With the people? | 0:17:07 | 0:17:08
See, I like it without the people. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
Right. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:10
Sometimes the people can offer up a bit of scale as well. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:14
So just having one person there sometimes gives that kind | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
of perspective to someone of what they're looking | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
at and the size of it. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:34
We've got street signs, some colour. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
Captured it all there. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:37
Oh, thanks. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:39
You got most of that because your smartphone has | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
a wider focal length. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
You are able to get more in. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
Whereas I was packed in quite tight. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
This looks like two different locations. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
Yeah, it's to do with my lens, and the shutter speed I use made it | 0:17:49 | 0:17:53
darker, and the depth of field gave it more of a dramatic vibe. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
Generally I've got a much closer shot. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
Maybe it looks like it could be somewhere else all together. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:03
I'm happy with some of the sparks I got flying up there. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
Are you? | 0:18:06 | 0:18:07
Yeah. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:08 | |
Looks exciting. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
I would never think to take a picture of this. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
There you go. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:12
Stick it on Instagram and see what your friends think. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:19
I have no idea where I am. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
I often think that's the beauty of this, though. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
I can tell you we are very close to one of the major shopping | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
districts in Hong Kong, with many tourists, maybe 200 | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
metres from us right now. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:32
Really? | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
But you wouldn't know it. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
Maybe if you look at that building there, that tall building. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
That is Langham Place, and it's one of the major malls in Hong Kong. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
Because, as I said before, Hong Kong is so densely packed together, | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
that's the beauty of it. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:48
It means when you're looking for photos, you don't have to travel | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
far to get what you want. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
I like it, but it was more a quick shoot and run, | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
because I was scared the old lady was going to come out and get me. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:02
A lot of these shots you shoot once. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
If you get it, you get it. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
If you don't, you don't. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:07
You are very lucky to capture that with an iPhone. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
She is quite far off. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:11
You've done really well there. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
What works well on Instagram? | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
If I want to get maximum likes, what should I take pictures of? | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
Architecture, street shots. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
Not so much lately, but an amazing typhoon sunset as well. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:26
In fact, if you could combine the two. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
A street shot with an amazing purple sky, that would just blow up. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
That would be huge. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:39
As night falls, we're joined by fellow Instagramers Jess | 0:19:39 | 0:19:42
and Vivian who also have big followers here in Hong Kong | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
and around the world. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
Now the pressure really is on, as I face even more competition | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
from the professionals. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:53
We're in Moan Kok, and we're here to see some of the neon | 0:19:53 | 0:19:57
lights on Portland Street, one of Hong Kong's | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
most famous streets. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:00
At night, especially after it's rained, you can | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
see the streets glow. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
As you can see here. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
It's pretty cool, right? | 0:20:07 | 0:20:08
Wow. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12 | |
With a smartphone, you just have to use what's around you. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
Sometimes at night you can get that really atmospheric | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
and get more gritty side. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
You know what, sometimes you just have to be bold. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
That's a good tip. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:26
Just stand there and wait. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
Patience is everything. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
I quite like that one. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:33
Yeah that's nice. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:34
You've got the neon, action shot. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
And he's smiling. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:44
I don't know. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:50
Just the smartphone is not very good at night-time. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
I'm feeling they're not - they won't be as good as yours. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
We'll see. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:56
They were in the day, right! | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
So before I go, I want to get the iconic Hong Kong taxi. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:04
Yes, everybody loves a taxi shot. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:08
How do I do that with a smartphone? | 0:21:08 | 0:21:12
It's going to be tough to get that kind of long exposure | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
that you're looking for, but I honestly think that we can do | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
something slightly different but you're really going to like it. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
We're going to try to get behind the taxi and capture | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
the city with the taxi in the foreground. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
OK. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:27 | |
How does that sound? | 0:21:27 | 0:21:28
All right. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:28
Let's give that a try. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
Let's do it. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:35
Get ready to get behind this taxi. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
All right. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
Now get out there and shoot behind the taxi. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
Oh, that's good. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
Good, good. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:47
Let me see it. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
That's excellent. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
I prefer that one. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:52
So crop that one? | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
Yeah, absolutely. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:56
Nice. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:57 | |
Well done. | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
You're a Hong Kong photographer now. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
Now you're pushing it. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:11
If you want to see more of those pictures, check | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
out our social media feeds. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:15
All the details should be on your screen now. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:18
That's all we've got time for this week. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
Next week - we head to the South American surfers' | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
paradise of Punta de Lobos in Chile in search of the perfect wave. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
I got whacked in the face with about ten waves in a row, | 0:22:27 | 0:22:31
so I've swallowed most of that water. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:33
Join us for that if you can. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
Until next time, from me and the rest of the Travel Show team | 0:22:35 | 0:22:39
here in Hong Kong, it's goodbye. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:44 |
