June Kelly, BBC News. Thank you for watching. Breakfast is up next at

:00:00.:00:00.

six o'clock. It is going to open up South America

:00:00.:00:13.

to the world. It is not just about Rio.

:00:14.:00:37.

Hello, and welcome to The Travel Show. This week it is coming from

:00:38.:00:48.

the huge world travel market in London. Each year, representatives

:00:49.:00:52.

from all over the globe come here to try to tempt travellers to their

:00:53.:00:57.

shores. With many hosting major events next year I have come to see

:00:58.:01:03.

whether you and I can get a piece of the action. But first, here is what

:01:04.:01:08.

else is coming up on the day's show. Henry heads to the Philippines to

:01:09.:01:15.

immerse himself in art, literally. Ready's if you are and outdoor type

:01:16.:01:21.

the two things you want to be is warm and dry. -- an. We will have

:01:22.:01:30.

some of the latest travel gadgets. And I invite countries from around

:01:31.:01:37.

the world to take part in a special travel show challenged. Two must

:01:38.:01:44.

have items when you go to Brazil... -- Travel Show Challenge. Huge

:01:45.:01:51.

crowds, loud cheers, lively celebrations, and, world-class

:01:52.:01:58.

athlete. There is nothing like the atmosphere of a big global sporting

:01:59.:02:02.

event. Every year, countries and cities around the world get ready to

:02:03.:02:07.

welcome hundreds of thousands of people to their shores and become

:02:08.:02:12.

the focus of attention to millions more watching. They take on the

:02:13.:02:17.

enormous task of transforming themselves by building new venues,

:02:18.:02:20.

hotels, transport, and all-round and the systems. And the pressure is on

:02:21.:02:27.

to be exciting and capable. -- better. For many places it is the

:02:28.:02:32.

biggest opportunity they will ever have to influence perceptions and

:02:33.:02:40.

attract the wrest. -- tourists. Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is putting

:02:41.:02:46.

themselves on the global stage to get ready to host the Olympic Games.

:02:47.:02:53.

A very exciting time. But also very nerve-racking. Seeing as they are

:02:54.:03:00.

representatives from every country RBS in the world here today, ahead

:03:01.:03:04.

in to find someone who can give me an insight into the buildup of the

:03:05.:03:09.

first Olympic and Paralympic games ever to be held in South America. --

:03:10.:03:19.

there are. -- country. It was handed from London to Rio. What has

:03:20.:03:27.

happened and then? It is a big effort to organise a big event. --

:03:28.:03:38.

since. We have the possibility of realising a beautiful experience in

:03:39.:03:47.

Rio. What are the challenges of such a huge event? Convincing people that

:03:48.:03:50.

the Games will reinvent the risen in Brazil. It will be good for the

:03:51.:03:56.

country in general as well. -- tourism. One piece of good news is

:03:57.:04:02.

there are still tickets available for next year's Olympic and

:04:03.:04:07.

Paralympic games in Rio. Events will be held in four main areas of the

:04:08.:04:11.

city but most of the action will take place in this city, which will

:04:12.:04:16.

be home to the Olympic Park. Accommodation is being bought vast,

:04:17.:04:24.

so the advice is to get it will soon. -- bought fast. It could pay

:04:25.:04:32.

to invest in smaller guesthouses. If you are in Rio during the games and

:04:33.:04:38.

don't have a ticket for the event there are still ways to get

:04:39.:04:42.

involved. The city will be a live. The seafront and the parks will be

:04:43.:04:49.

amazing. -- alive. You can watch the Games for free on the big screen.

:04:50.:04:55.

The buzz created during sport is electrifying. It is no secret I am a

:04:56.:05:01.

sports fan. Are half in lucky enough to be a commentator in the

:05:02.:05:08.

Paralympic Games. -- I have been. Is what can bring people together

:05:09.:05:14.

whether they win or lose. But once they go home, what happens then? --

:05:15.:05:21.

Sport can. The hope is to create something more lasting. The

:05:22.:05:26.

facilities built in Athens have largely been left unused as they

:05:27.:05:35.

Games ended in 2004. Though, London, three years on from Olympic and

:05:36.:05:39.

Paralympic mania, most of those special and expensive venues are

:05:40.:05:43.

still being used. But change goes way beyond the bricks and mortar of

:05:44.:05:48.

these venues and the perception of some Olympic cities has transformed

:05:49.:05:54.

immeasurably and as a result more tourists now want to go there.

:05:55.:06:04.

Barcelona was enormous through the Olympics. It was an amazing tourists

:06:05.:06:09.

destinations. Is has transformed the city and it has become one of the

:06:10.:06:12.

leading destinations in Europe now. -- It. Can that be replicated in

:06:13.:06:18.

Rio? My impression of the city is that it is dutiful, amazing, but

:06:19.:06:26.

dangerous. -- beautiful. Yes it has problems with sewage and security,

:06:27.:06:31.

they are working on cleaning that up. They are trying to make the

:06:32.:06:36.

country cleaner and safer. Because they want us to go there for

:06:37.:06:40.

holidays. It will open up up America to the world. And I think that is

:06:41.:06:43.

what it should be about. It is not just about Rio. Come on! Come on!

:06:44.:06:54.

But hosting events like the Olympics is an expensive business and Brazil

:06:55.:06:58.

is likely to spend over $3 billion on the Games. And that is a massive

:06:59.:07:05.

investment for any country. So, aside from world-class sport and one

:07:06.:07:09.

heck of a party, what long-term changes can Rio 2016 ring for

:07:10.:07:16.

Brazil? Crime has been a long-standing issue in many

:07:17.:07:19.

Brazilian city. Much of it is centred in the densely packed and

:07:20.:07:23.

deprived districts known as favelas. In the run-up to next year, there

:07:24.:07:28.

has been a concerted effort to clean up many of these areas, dried out

:07:29.:07:36.

crime, and improve living situations. -- drive. Tourists are

:07:37.:07:44.

being guided to these guesthouses. Rio has also taken steps to resolve

:07:45.:07:50.

the sewage that pollutes its world-famous beaches and coastline.

:07:51.:07:53.

If the cleanup is successful, it will be a major improvement to Rio

:07:54.:07:58.

hours infrastructure and image, providing cleaner and safer areas

:07:59.:08:12.

for tourists and wildlife. -- Rio's. MUSIC. It feels like a proper party

:08:13.:08:24.

atmosphere here. There are so many inspiring things that can come from

:08:25.:08:29.

sport. I remember when my basketball team won that runs medal back in at

:08:30.:08:34.

the end 2004. It was amazing. -- Athens,. The sense of pride and

:08:35.:08:40.

achievement was out of this world. If you are lucky enough to get a

:08:41.:08:44.

ticket you are in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and

:08:45.:08:47.

maybe even witness a city embarking on any legacy, beginning in awesome

:08:48.:08:50.

style. -- a new legacy. SYNTH MUSIC. I'm trying to get as

:08:51.:09:09.

many countries as possible to take The Travel Show challenge. Is your

:09:10.:09:15.

nation are correct? Ready? Yeah. Yeah. Go! What a must have items

:09:16.:09:27.

when you go to London? Denmark, are you ready? How many visitors go to

:09:28.:09:33.

Denmark's 20 million. When you go to Kenya? A big suitcase. When you go

:09:34.:09:42.

to Brazil. A suitcase. Panama. Number of visitors? 29 million. Two

:09:43.:09:54.

useful phrases. Umm... Two useful phrases... Sorry? Useful items in

:09:55.:10:05.

Indonesia? I don't know. How many visitors? 37 million? New York City?

:10:06.:10:15.

Forget about it. Best kept secret in Sri Lanka. I don't know. El gem?

:10:16.:10:29.

Year. -- Oman. -- Beer. Oh! You've got it! Five from five! It is time

:10:30.:10:36.

to find out what else is making news in the world of travel this week.

:10:37.:10:46.

Here is your update. In Egypt, the pyramids of Giza have revealed

:10:47.:10:49.

mysterious heat spots which scientists describe as thermal

:10:50.:10:55.

anomalies. This discovery comes as experts search for suspected hidden

:10:56.:11:01.

chambers. From one pyramid to another... In Shanghai, China, a

:11:02.:11:07.

team of 200 people from Barcelona came to form a traditional Catalan

:11:08.:11:12.

human pyramid, the height of the 2-storey building. The event was

:11:13.:11:17.

part of the first Barcelona Catalunya culture week in Shanghai

:11:18.:11:22.

and marks the 15th anniversary of ties between the two cities. --

:11:23.:11:28.

Catalonia. And finally, it was with great sadness that people around the

:11:29.:11:34.

globe will and the attacks of Paris. -- followed. Many of the landmarks

:11:35.:11:39.

around the world were lit up in French colours in a show of

:11:40.:11:43.

solidarity and mourning for those killed. We finish this week's Travel

:11:44.:11:49.

Update with some of the striking images. SAD MUSIC PLAYS.

:11:50.:12:01.

Stay with us, because still to come on The Travel Show:

:12:02.:12:03.

We head to the Philippines to see art recreating life

:12:04.:12:06.

The Travel Show - your essential guide, wherever you're heading.

:12:07.:12:31.

We're kicking things off this week with this -

:12:32.:12:33.

it's a compact electronic micro scooter, which the makers claim is

:12:34.:12:36.

a world first because it uses sensors to detect my motion,

:12:37.:12:39.

The e-micro one weighs in at 7.5 kilograms.

:12:40.:12:47.

It takes about an hour to fully charge this bad

:12:48.:12:49.

There are three different ride settings - eco, standard,

:12:50.:12:57.

On smooth ground this is lovely, but as soon

:12:58.:13:16.

as you get an uneven surface, it can be a little bit jarring.

:13:17.:13:20.

You would think for this kind of money there would be some kind

:13:21.:13:23.

of suspension that was built into the wheels.

:13:24.:13:33.

It is quite lightweight but not enough to be travel friendly, but

:13:34.:13:36.

really easy to master, and once you get going it as a whole lot of fun.

:13:37.:13:40.

If you're an outdoorsy type, the two things you will want to be

:13:41.:13:46.

are warm and dry, and the makers of this sleeping bag

:13:47.:13:49.

Because it is filled with a special treated down.

:13:50.:13:57.

The Rab Neutrino Endurance 600 - it's quite

:13:58.:13:59.

an unusual sleeping bag because it's supposed to be waterproof.

:14:00.:14:01.

The inside has a special hydrophobic dam, which its makers claim keeps it

:14:02.:14:16.

resistant to damp and wet conditions, but it's not cheap.

:14:17.:14:18.

It is definitely very snug in here, but it is not raining

:14:19.:14:21.

so there is no real way of testing whether it is waterproof or not.

:14:22.:14:25.

A cold wintry evening shouldn't stop you from enjoying a nice chilled

:14:26.:14:36.

drink, but if you want to protect your fingers from the elements,

:14:37.:14:39.

The Hanskie is the original drinking mitten.

:14:40.:14:42.

Its makers claim it allows you to enjoy your favourite can or bottle

:14:43.:14:45.

in cold weather without sacrificing warmth or grip ability.

:14:46.:14:52.

OK, so there is no real technological element to this.

:14:53.:14:55.

I mean, there is not even any kind of lining on the

:14:56.:14:59.

inside that can keep the drink cold while keeping your hand warm.

:15:00.:15:02.

But it would make for a nice novelty gift for that person that's always

:15:03.:15:06.

OK, come on, admit it - hands up if you're a little bit lazy.

:15:07.:15:26.

If you're the kind of person that can't be bothered to take all

:15:27.:15:31.

your stuff out of the suitcase and hang it nicely on the shelves or in

:15:32.:15:35.

This is the ultimate lazy person suitcase,

:15:36.:15:38.

The ShelfPack has four shelves, which allows you to pack your

:15:39.:15:42.

clothes and then stack them for when you arrive at your destination.

:15:43.:15:46.

It has got a number of front pockets where you can keep

:15:47.:15:50.

other belongings, and it seems like a really good idea,

:15:51.:15:52.

but it is quite pricey and it is not the most stylish of suitcases.

:15:53.:15:58.

Yes, I know - it is a little bit geeky, but I am a gadget guy and I

:15:59.:16:02.

Having the shelves inside does limit the space that

:16:03.:16:06.

would normally be available in a case of this size, and it does

:16:07.:16:09.

make it a little bit heavy, but think of the time you will save.

:16:10.:16:12.

It allows you just to put your case down and get

:16:13.:16:15.

on with your business meetings, or enjoy your holiday, which is

:16:16.:16:18.

Finally, this week we head to Manila in the Philippines.

:16:19.:16:31.

The city is probably more associated with traffic jams and crowded

:16:32.:16:33.

But a new attraction is setting out to try to change that,

:16:34.:16:38.

and get tourists more involved in works of art - literally.

:16:39.:16:47.

London's National Gallery, the Louvre in Paris and

:16:48.:16:56.

These galleries house some of the most famous and valuable paintings

:16:57.:17:00.

in the world, attracting millions of people who come to contemplate and

:17:01.:17:03.

But what if you want to go home with some photos of your visit?

:17:04.:17:18.

Well, with these and other galleries either banning or reviewing

:17:19.:17:21.

their policy on selfie sticks and other forms of photography, you

:17:22.:17:26.

But here in Manila there is one gallery that

:17:27.:17:31.

They want you to interact with the art.

:17:32.:17:34.

If this was a real van Gogh painting, you wouldn't be allowed

:17:35.:17:37.

But in this case, you can actually be a part of the painting.

:17:38.:17:46.

The Art In Island museum is Asia's largest gallery dedicated to 3-D

:17:47.:17:49.

The two-storey building houses some 200 paintings -

:17:50.:17:55.

from man eating animals to masterpieces with a twist.

:17:56.:18:00.

How long did it take you to paint this one?

:18:01.:18:12.

Margaret is one of the resident painters in the gallery.

:18:13.:18:18.

The pictures are all carefully designed with cameras in mind.

:18:19.:18:20.

This is the photo point, so these are quite critical

:18:21.:18:49.

OK, you take a photo of me here then.

:18:50.:19:06.

So, you are kind of forced to do something silly.

:19:07.:19:17.

You kind of want to be a part of the picture.

:19:18.:19:22.

The approach is is paying off, attracting thousands

:19:23.:19:26.

To be honest, I hate going to a machine because it is boring.

:19:27.:19:33.

But this is a different kind of machine because I can take pictures.

:19:34.:19:36.

These types of museums aren't for everybody.

:19:37.:19:38.

It is very loud and you're constantly having to

:19:39.:19:41.

You use your imagination whilst walking around,

:19:42.:19:45.

You must know exactly all the best points to do the selfies.

:19:46.:19:59.

The people behind the gallery say the exhibition is a direct

:20:00.:20:04.

But the real success is what people are doing with the photos.

:20:05.:20:12.

Our marketing is more on the social media side and word-of-mouth.

:20:13.:20:15.

The audience get excited when they see the pictures of other

:20:16.:20:18.

The exhibition is constantly being refreshed, with new designs

:20:19.:20:27.

So I have got a chance to see how it is done.

:20:28.:20:39.

I've got this sort of red here, where should I be going?

:20:40.:20:42.

I'm totally going to ruin your masterpiece here, by the way!

:20:43.:20:51.

Maybe a few thousand more hours of practice.

:20:52.:21:11.

It is fair to say that this gallery would not be the choice

:21:12.:21:15.

of serious art lovers, but what you do get here is a lot of fun.

:21:16.:21:18.

And where else would you get the chance to get up close and personal

:21:19.:21:22.

Henry getting his head around 3-D art in the Philippines.

:21:23.:21:27.

Well, I'm afraid that is it from us for this week.

:21:28.:21:30.

Rajan sets off to travel through a country with a fiercesome

:21:31.:21:35.

From the Siberian border to the Gobi Desert.

:21:36.:21:44.

He finds out why Mongolia is known for being home to some of

:21:45.:21:47.

But the guy before has dislocated his arm, which is a bit freaky.

:21:48.:22:00.

But in the meantime, don't forget you can follow us on social media.

:22:01.:22:07.

You know what to do by now and if you don't, check out the details

:22:08.:22:11.

You can follow us in real time on our travels.

:22:12.:22:17.

Until the next time, from me, Ade Adepitan, and everyone else here on

:22:18.:22:22.
