This is what you see every single day.

:00:00.:00:41.

Welcome to the Travel Show, coming to you this week from Kenya.

:00:42.:00:45.

We are travelling here to get some face time with some of the

:00:46.:00:49.

I am off to one of the lesser-known parts to find out how it arguably

:00:50.:00:59.

became the birthplace of organised conservation in Africa.

:01:00.:01:05.

Let's start this week about 5000 feet off the ground

:01:06.:01:07.

In African terms, Amboseli National Park is quite small,

:01:08.:01:41.

But be under no illusions, this outpost not far from the border of

:01:42.:01:49.

There are many different types of conservation efforts happening

:01:50.:02:07.

all around Africa, but not many people know that

:02:08.:02:09.

a lot of them are intertwined with tourism, so if tourism is hurting,

:02:10.:02:12.

Be in no doubt, tourism here has been suffering.

:02:13.:02:18.

Militant attacks along the Kenyan coast prompted a raft of countries,

:02:19.:02:33.

including the US and the UK, to warn its citizens

:02:34.:02:44.

Most of those advisories have now been lifted but

:02:45.:02:48.

The first five months of this year, tourism was 25% down on 2014.

:02:49.:03:01.

When you come to wildlife conservation,

:03:02.:03:03.

a lot of it depends on revenue from tourism, and if tourism goes down it

:03:04.:03:06.

means some of the directives that are supposed to be implemented may

:03:07.:03:12.

Katito works for the Amboseli Trust for Elephants,

:03:13.:03:36.

which claims their work over the past 40 years has profoundly changed

:03:37.:03:41.

the way we think of elephants, from how they behave in their habitat and

:03:42.:03:44.

The sun is just coming down, Kilimanjaro is just over there

:03:45.:04:04.

on the right, we are surrounded by an amazing herd of elephants.

:04:05.:04:16.

This is what you see every single day.

:04:17.:04:22.

That is why I have been studying elephants for the past 20 years,

:04:23.:04:26.

With this family, we want to make sure everyone is here.

:04:27.:04:43.

There are 52 elephant families in this park, and Katito knows most

:04:44.:04:46.

Part of her job is to do a regular census

:04:47.:04:49.

This place must be heaven for animals.

:04:50.:05:05.

It is, when I started there were 750 elephants,

:05:06.:05:07.

I cannot complain about poaching here, it is not bad.

:05:08.:05:18.

Compared to other places in Kenya, this is the best place.

:05:19.:05:21.

The reason why is because of the work that we do.

:05:22.:05:24.

Crossing fingers, we hope everything will work well,

:05:25.:05:28.

It is a similar story for another antipoaching arrangement,

:05:29.:06:09.

the Big Life Foundation, whose rangers have arrested more

:06:10.:06:11.

When tourism drops because of unforeseen circumstances,

:06:12.:06:18.

A couple of lodges, not all of them, but they pay a percentage

:06:19.:06:34.

We need to find other ways to keep our operation running.

:06:35.:06:41.

It is a pretty costly business, so every cent counts.

:06:42.:06:44.

It looks like recently in the past couple

:06:45.:06:54.

of months it has started to climb, and we hope it will recover next

:06:55.:06:58.

Some say visitor numbers are already beginning to recover,

:06:59.:07:03.

which could be thanks in part to some of those damaging

:07:04.:07:06.

We have about four trucks lined up on this road, very busy indeed.

:07:07.:07:16.

A few wildebeest out there, but all the tourists here are

:07:17.:07:29.

fanatical about their photography, any wildlife at all.

:07:30.:07:31.

They have thousands of dollars worth of lenses, I suppose that is one

:07:32.:07:34.

Locals have been asked to play a part as well,

:07:35.:07:38.

Even small jobs now could have ramifications into the future.

:07:39.:07:51.

Take this primary school right on the edge of the park.

:07:52.:07:54.

The next generation of rangers and guides will come

:07:55.:07:56.

I have been asked to judge their wildlife warrior poster competition.

:07:57.:08:08.

Lions have become the most endangered species.

:08:09.:08:14.

The winners are given a game drive and a chance to visit

:08:15.:08:20.

It is funded by money from tourism concerns.

:08:21.:08:24.

The idea behind the scholarship programme is that these people

:08:25.:08:27.

will finish their secondary school education and they will

:08:28.:08:29.

We want the cycle to continue once we have gone,

:08:30.:08:33.

They will take our places and continue educating

:08:34.:08:37.

And eventually we will be talking about how much we have conserved.

:08:38.:08:49.

If there is some good news here it is that everyone seems to get it.

:08:50.:08:53.

Initiation rites that used to see big game slaughtered are now not

:08:54.:08:56.

And some organisations are compensating farmers

:08:57.:09:07.

for damage that wild animals cause to crops or livestock.

:09:08.:09:15.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the animal populations here

:09:16.:09:18.

To the Meru National Park, a beautiful piece

:09:19.:09:47.

Meru was also the home of two people who became the inspiration

:09:48.:09:59.

behind much of the conservation work that goes on in East Africa today.

:10:00.:10:03.

The subjects of a book and a Hollywood movie, they captured

:10:04.:10:05.

Coming up later, I find out what legacy is left 50

:10:06.:10:10.

years after filming Born Free right here in Kenya.

:10:11.:10:25.

BBC Travel Show, your essential guide wherever you are headed!

:10:30.:10:41.

Hello and welcome to Trending Travel, where we discover what is

:10:42.:10:44.

I will be bringing you essential videos and apps to take with you.

:10:45.:10:49.

Let's start with our rundown of the top stories at have caught

:10:50.:10:57.

A new pop-up alternative theme park in the UK,

:10:58.:11:00.

masterminded by street artist Banksy, sent social media crazy.

:11:01.:11:05.

Called Dismaland, it has installations by artists describing

:11:06.:11:07.

social commentary, and was described as an sinister twist on Disneyland.

:11:08.:11:26.

A call to boycott Kerala was on Facebook,

:11:27.:11:28.

But authorities dispute any culling of stray dogs, and say they are

:11:29.:11:33.

an animal friendly, pet-loving community.

:11:34.:11:38.

A twist on Google Street View has put Japan's cat culture on the map.

:11:39.:11:44.

The new project, called Cat Street View, shows a Japanese

:11:45.:11:48.

In Turkey, the restoration of a castle raised

:11:49.:11:56.

eyebrows among social media users who described its new look as

:11:57.:12:00.

This survey looked at tens of thousands of tweets from around

:12:01.:12:07.

the US to see who was more positive or negative about tourists.

:12:08.:12:10.

The top tourist-loving city was found to be Chicago,

:12:11.:12:18.

and while you might rightly expect people from places like New York or

:12:19.:12:21.

Las Vegas to vent more negative feeling towards tourists, the most

:12:22.:12:24.

This app allows people to create a long-range selfie.

:12:25.:12:48.

This can click the shutter on the camera from as much

:12:49.:12:51.

We love staying connected with you all online, and don't forget we are

:12:52.:13:01.

You have been sending us some great things this month.

:13:02.:13:08.

Pictures have been coming in from all over the world as many

:13:09.:13:11.

of you in the northern hemisphere took summer holidays.

:13:12.:13:15.

You can get involved on Tuesdays using this hashtag.

:13:16.:13:18.

We especially like these from Ben, out in the morning.

:13:19.:13:21.

You can send videos, like this one from Europe.

:13:22.:13:39.

Now let's look at the viral videos for this month.

:13:40.:13:44.

This video has had over 300,000 views, and really shows Los Angeles

:13:45.:13:49.

He said a lot of time and passion, scouting locations, and waiting

:13:50.:13:58.

Another video which took serious passion was this

:13:59.:14:08.

one by Oliver Astrologo, called Roma which was watched

:14:09.:14:12.

He dedicated months to capturing everyday moments, to show a day

:14:13.:14:19.

And don't forget to check out our website for all the ways that

:14:20.:14:31.

you can get in touch, or if you have seen anything online that you

:14:32.:14:35.

This place is amazing for many reasons.

:14:36.:14:55.

But right up there has to be its most famous four-legged

:14:56.:14:58.

She was the inspiration behind the film Born Free,

:14:59.:15:21.

The film, based on the lives of George and Joy Adamson, was based on

:15:22.:15:28.

Joy Adamson's book, about training her to live safely in the wild.

:15:29.:15:41.

Some people say that was the start of much of the conservation work

:15:42.:15:44.

done here on the continent, and their legacy still lives on.

:15:45.:15:48.

This is a very lightly visited park, but

:15:49.:15:58.

Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, rhino, it is all here.

:15:59.:16:06.

And this is one of the places Elsa the lioness lived for five years,

:16:07.:16:09.

This is Elsa's last resting spot, very close to the river where George

:16:10.:16:29.

first found her, and the last moments she spent before she died.

:16:30.:16:35.

And, of course, Joy's ashes were scattered around here as well.

:16:36.:16:40.

A lovely little oasis, under this beautiful tree.

:16:41.:16:50.

The film of Elsa's life was shot, and was a sensation

:16:51.:16:53.

It made stars of George and Joy, and the aftermath changed

:16:54.:16:57.

One of the more obvious impacts was the beginning of some of Africa's

:16:58.:17:09.

The Elsa Conservation Trust still runs a wildlife retreat

:17:10.:17:16.

and conservation centre in Hell's Gate National Park, here in Kenya.

:17:17.:17:22.

And the Born Free Foundation, launched by the film's two human

:17:23.:17:25.

stars, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, operates around the world.

:17:26.:17:33.

These are some of the snares that we have collected the last four months.

:17:34.:17:37.

Here in Meru, it counts lions, hunts poachers, and clears

:17:38.:17:40.

So what effect did the movie Born Free have on conservation

:17:41.:17:46.

I think Born Free film is by far one of the most up-to-date

:17:47.:17:51.

The specific story of the film touches me, and many

:17:52.:18:02.

We continuously have to make it about who will continue doing what

:18:03.:18:09.

Virginia has done all her life, and what George did.

:18:10.:18:13.

And it is a continued inspiration for us.

:18:14.:18:16.

Not only Born Free, across the conservation world.

:18:17.:18:29.

After filming had finished, George made his way with the lions, and

:18:30.:18:33.

To mark this place, there is not much here,

:18:34.:18:39.

This park is virtually unchanged since George and Joy were here.

:18:40.:19:00.

I'm really lucky, because we have come across a lioness and her cub.

:19:01.:19:06.

They have just feasted, so this is the moment where they get

:19:07.:19:09.

really lazy, nestled just below the lovely tree for some shade.

:19:10.:19:15.

It kind of reminds you of what Elsa would have been doing here in

:19:16.:19:18.

So, do you think this whole experience will spur you

:19:19.:19:38.

Definitely, we can't wait to show my son that movie, because we have

:19:39.:19:44.

Why do you think films like Born Free would inspire people to

:19:45.:19:51.

come out into a kind of very harsh environment, to look

:19:52.:19:53.

I think it shows you can be safe, if you follow the...

:19:54.:20:03.

I mean, you put your trust in the drivers,

:20:04.:20:08.

And the film definitely shows you that side of it.

:20:09.:20:21.

George had this lovely call, never had to shout.

:20:22.:20:24.

Of course, Joy and George needed helpers, and one of those was

:20:25.:20:34.

He helped return the Born Free lions to the wild, but used to come back

:20:35.:20:41.

They were relaxed, there was no tension, there were no issues.

:20:42.:20:50.

We knew very well that they would walk up to us, and greet us

:20:51.:20:53.

The pair used to sit under this tamarind tree, with warm beers.

:20:54.:21:01.

It doesn't take long for the memories to come flooding back.

:21:02.:21:05.

Just being with him, and being able to work with him,

:21:06.:21:09.

and see how he absolutely handled his lions, and how relaxed he was.

:21:10.:21:16.

And he had this amazing rapport with his environment.

:21:17.:21:19.

He was totally in harmony with his environment.

:21:20.:21:23.

So, with the 50th anniversary of the film coming up, the publicity

:21:24.:21:34.

it sort of gets, it is going to have a surge in tourism for the area.

:21:35.:21:38.

Anything to, first of all, try and remind the the legacy and

:21:39.:21:45.

the legend, the Adamsons and Born Free, and especially for the park.

:21:46.:21:52.

It will suddenly pick up, and I think the anniversary is a wonderful

:21:53.:21:56.

way to relive this, and see for themselves the way it happened.

:21:57.:22:06.

This is the Born Free country, this is where it all happened.

:22:07.:22:09.

This is where Elsa was found, this is where Elsa was.

:22:10.:22:28.

Well, that is pretty much it from Kenya.

:22:29.:22:30.

Carmen will be heading for Japan, where in the city of Kyoto, a travel

:22:31.:22:45.

company is offering women the chance to play the bride, when no-one else

:22:46.:22:48.

And don't forget, if you want to follow us on all

:22:49.:23:06.

of our travels, wherever we are in the world, in real-time, sign on

:23:07.:23:10.

The details should be on your screens now.

:23:11.:23:13.

But for me, Henry Golding, and the rest of the Travel Show team

:23:14.:23:17.

Well, for most of us, it was a wet rather than white Christmas.

:23:18.:23:45.

There was a little bit of snow over the hills of northern Britain, but

:23:46.:23:50.
