Using one of these in the Caribbean

0:00:020:00:03

is the ultimate watersports experience.

0:00:030:00:05

But on one island,

0:00:080:00:10

you might be surprised how difficult it is to actually hire one.

0:00:100:00:14

Coming up on this week's show, we head to Jamaica to check out

0:00:390:00:43

why new jet ski regulations are causing confusion.

0:00:430:00:47

We can go somewhere else and jet ski and do anything we want.

0:00:470:00:50

They got rid of one of our recreational activities

0:00:500:00:52

on the bucket list here, you know.

0:00:520:00:54

We set out to navigate the frozen seas

0:00:550:00:58

through the Northwest Passage in Arctic Canada.

0:00:580:01:01

If you look at the historical expeditions through this area,

0:01:010:01:06

a lot of ships have been lost out here.

0:01:060:01:09

We take you on a 60-second stopover in Shanghai.

0:01:090:01:13

And join me for the very latest in what's trending in the world of

0:01:130:01:16

online travel, social media, viral videos and amazing apps.

0:01:160:01:21

Hello and welcome to the travel show with me, Ade Adepitan,

0:01:260:01:29

this week coming from Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

0:01:290:01:32

And when you see such a beautiful ocean, it's no surprise that

0:01:320:01:36

so many people want to come here to enjoy it.

0:01:360:01:38

Now new regulations are in place to govern the operators

0:01:420:01:46

who hire jet skis out to tourists here.

0:01:460:01:48

But what's the best way to ensure you stay safe

0:01:480:01:51

when you take a jet ski out on the water,

0:01:510:01:53

wherever you are in the world?

0:01:530:01:55

The island of Jamaica is hugely popular with holiday-makers.

0:02:030:02:07

In fact, the numbers who visit each year

0:02:070:02:10

almost outweighs the three million who actually live here.

0:02:100:02:13

They come for the music.

0:02:180:02:20

This is the birthplace of reggae, after all.

0:02:200:02:23

And is also home to the fastest man on Earth, Usain Bolt.

0:02:230:02:26

Then there's the food and the pristine white sandy beaches.

0:02:290:02:32

And plenty to do for avid watersport fans

0:02:320:02:36

like myself, with these - jet skis.

0:02:360:02:38

So this here, that's connected to your wrist. That's the kill switch.

0:02:420:02:45

It's connected to the bike.

0:02:450:02:47

Without this on it, the bike won't be able to start.

0:02:470:02:49

So as soon as you fall off the bike, this comes out and the engine stops?

0:02:490:02:52

-Exactly.

-And what sort of speed does this go?

0:02:520:02:55

-It goes like 40, you know what I mean?

-40! That's cool.

0:02:550:02:58

So I'm going to get out with you now,

0:02:580:03:00

-make sure you have an understanding of how to properly use it.

-OK.

0:03:000:03:04

To start, press the green button.

0:03:040:03:06

Also to make sure that I bring it back, I suppose!

0:03:060:03:08

-Nice and easy going out.

-OK.

0:03:080:03:10

'Now I've had my safety briefing, it's time to go it alone.'

0:03:290:03:33

It is a lot of fun.

0:03:330:03:34

I mean, the real temptation, because you've got so much power, is that you want to accelerate off.

0:03:340:03:38

But that's probably not the right thing to do.

0:03:380:03:42

But I can see myself enjoying this a lot.

0:03:420:03:44

See you later! Whoo!

0:03:440:03:47

MUSIC: "Sing" by Ed Sheeran

0:03:470:03:51

While I'm on the water, the police arrive,

0:03:560:03:58

and I'm told to return to the beach.

0:03:580:04:00

'Demar explains that there's been lots of confusion over new rules

0:04:020:04:06

'that have been placed on jet ski operators here.'

0:04:060:04:09

Why did this happen?

0:04:090:04:11

Basically what caused us to shut down,

0:04:110:04:13

there was an accident in Negril.

0:04:130:04:14

A tourist was swimming outside of the swimming zone,

0:04:140:04:17

a jet ski was coming, the guy bounced him and they shut down all jet skis.

0:04:170:04:23

Tourists can pay anything up to 100 US dollars an hour

0:04:240:04:27

to hire a jet ski.

0:04:270:04:28

And it's a very lucrative business for some locals.

0:04:280:04:33

But to the surprise of these visitors,

0:04:330:04:35

jet ski activities are off-limits on this beach in Ocho Rios.

0:04:350:04:40

We can go somewhere else and jet ski and do anything we want.

0:04:400:04:43

They got rid of one of our recreational activities

0:04:430:04:45

on the bucket list here, you know?

0:04:450:04:48

Following three tragic accidents in the space of six months,

0:04:480:04:52

the government introduced a ban on the use of jet skis in February.

0:04:520:04:56

Just checking the serial number to make sure it matches with

0:04:570:05:01

the documentation that was submitted to us.

0:05:010:05:04

Authorities said they needed time to re-evaluate the industry,

0:05:040:05:07

which was pretty much unregulated,

0:05:070:05:10

to create a safer environment for both jet skiers and swimmers.

0:05:100:05:15

There are now safe swimming zones which have been introduced

0:05:150:05:18

and strict speed limits.

0:05:180:05:20

I think it will send the right message.

0:05:200:05:23

It will say to visitors to our country that we are keen

0:05:230:05:26

on safety and that, you know, we want them

0:05:260:05:28

to enjoy are beautiful country in the safest manner there is.

0:05:280:05:31

So I think it's actually a positive as opposed to a negative

0:05:310:05:34

as it relates to tourism in our country.

0:05:340:05:36

Go to your left.

0:05:370:05:38

Now every jet ski on the island has to be reregistered

0:05:380:05:42

with the Jamaican Maritime Authority.

0:05:420:05:44

And if the craft is hired by tourists, the owner is also

0:05:440:05:48

required to apply for a permit from the Jamaican Tourist Board.

0:05:480:05:52

And it's not just in Jamaica

0:05:540:05:56

where they've had a crackdown on jet ski safety.

0:05:560:05:59

Places like Hawaii, Mexico and Florida

0:05:590:06:01

have also seen their share of serious accidents.

0:06:010:06:05

Mainly because of carelessness on the part of the driver.

0:06:050:06:08

'It happened here along a stretch of cottages

0:06:080:06:10

'on the east side of Canandaigua Lake.

0:06:100:06:13

'The jet ski accelerated and crashed into the breakwall.

0:06:130:06:17

'New details tonight about two children rushed to

0:06:170:06:20

'the hospital in a helicopter.

0:06:200:06:22

'They were with friends out on the lake when one of them

0:06:220:06:25

'drove a jet ski over the kids.'

0:06:250:06:26

We want to make sure that the industry going forward is

0:06:270:06:31

properly monitored, regulated and insured so that persons who

0:06:310:06:35

do get into that business and continue in that business,

0:06:350:06:38

we have a much steadier

0:06:380:06:40

and much more stable environment for everybody.

0:06:400:06:43

But for some local business owners,

0:06:430:06:45

they claim the hike in insurance premiums now being levied

0:06:450:06:49

on commercial jet ski operators is pushing them out of the industry.

0:06:490:06:53

It's hoped a solution can be found, but the future doesn't look certain.

0:06:530:06:59

Right now, I'm kind of thinking

0:06:590:07:01

whether I should try to go in this or get out of that.

0:07:010:07:04

Because I don't see where it's working.

0:07:040:07:06

If you're planning on using a jet ski anywhere,

0:07:120:07:15

here's some Travel Show tips on how to stay safe.

0:07:150:07:17

MUSIC: "Sure Shot" by Beastie Boys

0:07:170:07:23

If you're a newbie to jet skiing, make sure that you've been shown

0:07:230:07:27

the basics before getting on one of these crafts.

0:07:270:07:29

When renting a jet ski anywhere in the world, make sure

0:07:320:07:35

the owner or company has a valid watersport licence.

0:07:350:07:39

These are normally issued from the local tourist board.

0:07:390:07:43

It means if you're unfortunate enough to have an accident,

0:07:430:07:46

you should be covered by their insurers.

0:07:460:07:48

Virtually no jet skis have running lights.

0:07:510:07:54

Most manufacturers recommend that they only be used during daylight.

0:07:540:07:59

In fact, in many countries,

0:07:590:08:01

there is a ban on the use of jet skis at night-time.

0:08:010:08:04

Make sure you wear a life jacket at all times.

0:08:070:08:10

It's also worth checking the rules because in most places

0:08:100:08:13

there are regulated speed limits, noise limits and distances

0:08:130:08:17

you need to keep from other boats or objects when on the water.

0:08:170:08:21

And finally, most jet ski operators require an adult to be on board

0:08:240:08:28

when a child is operating a jet ski.

0:08:280:08:31

So, sorry, kids - you'll need to be aged 17 and over

0:08:310:08:34

in most countries to ride the waves alone.

0:08:340:08:37

I hope you found that useful.

0:08:420:08:44

Now it's time for your weekly travel update.

0:08:440:08:47

We start this week in Florida at one of its major tourist attractions,

0:08:550:09:00

the marine theme park SeaWorld, who says it will build a bigger tank

0:09:000:09:04

for its killer whales.

0:09:040:09:05

Now, the announcement comes amid some criticism

0:09:050:09:08

of its treatment of the animals.

0:09:080:09:10

The new tank will be completed by 2018 and the company hopes

0:09:100:09:14

it will transform how visitors experience killer whales.

0:09:140:09:18

To Tibet now, and if railway travel is your thing,

0:09:200:09:23

an extension of the world's highest railway line hopes to give

0:09:230:09:27

passengers the chance to see some spectacular scenery.

0:09:270:09:31

The 250km extension

0:09:310:09:33

connects Tibet's two largest cities, Lhasa and Shigatse.

0:09:330:09:38

The new line will cut travel time between the two cities in half

0:09:380:09:43

to just three hours.

0:09:430:09:44

And China is no stranger to puppetry,

0:09:460:09:49

but now one of the world's biggest puppet productions

0:09:490:09:52

created outside of the country is set for the Chinese stages.

0:09:520:09:56

War Horse has been seen by

0:09:560:09:58

six million people in theatres around the world.

0:09:580:10:02

It's due to open in China next year.

0:10:020:10:05

Victoria here.

0:10:050:10:07

You probably picture me as a stout, somewhat sour-faced old woman.

0:10:070:10:11

And finally, ever heard of the talking statue?

0:10:110:10:14

Well, in London and Manchester, they've begun talking.

0:10:140:10:17

If you read my stories, you will never once find me

0:10:170:10:20

wearing a deerstalker hat.

0:10:200:10:22

An innovative art project has users scan codes on the monuments

0:10:220:10:27

using their smartphones.

0:10:270:10:29

The speaking statues then call them back, telling tales of the past,

0:10:290:10:33

voiced by famous actors.

0:10:330:10:35

Still to come on The Travel Show...

0:10:390:10:41

..we've braved the freezing seas of northern Canada

0:10:450:10:49

in search of the legendary Northwest Passage.

0:10:490:10:52

Well, this is really quite something.

0:10:540:10:57

We're in the middle of an Arctic storm.

0:10:570:10:59

The winds are about 55km an hour and the waves ten metres high.

0:10:590:11:03

The Travel Show, your essential guide to wherever you're heading.

0:12:070:12:11

Hi, you're watching Trending Travel,

0:12:140:12:16

our round-up of all that's weird and wonderful in travel-related

0:12:160:12:19

bits and pieces on the web and on social media.

0:12:190:12:23

Let's kick off with some jaw-dropping videos.

0:12:230:12:26

Now, geeks like me love a good infographic.

0:12:260:12:29

And what's even better is an animated infographic, which is

0:12:290:12:33

just what the air traffic control team at NATS has provided me with.

0:12:330:12:38

A really stunning visualisation of air traffic, this.

0:12:380:12:41

We've sped it up a bit, but it's the sheer volume of flights going

0:12:410:12:45

backwards and forwards between Europe and the States that amazed us.

0:12:450:12:49

And also the complicated cluster of routes in the skies above Europe.

0:12:490:12:53

Flashmobs might be so last year,

0:12:530:12:55

but they're still hot in summertime New York.

0:12:550:12:58

So far, over six million people have clicked onto this YouTube clip

0:12:580:13:01

of the cast of The Lion King

0:13:010:13:03

taking their performance underground in the Big Apple.

0:13:150:13:19

And we're on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram,

0:13:190:13:21

so let us know if you've seen anything quite as good as that.

0:13:210:13:24

And we'd love to see pictures from your travels too.

0:13:240:13:28

This week, we're after something very specific.

0:13:280:13:31

Your favourite room with a view.

0:13:310:13:33

Sunsets and beaches have dominated your submissions so far,

0:13:330:13:36

though I do like a new view of somewhere familiar too.

0:13:360:13:40

And very nice lateral thinking from Melissa,

0:13:400:13:43

waking above the clouds over Brisbane.

0:13:430:13:45

My own travel highlights

0:13:450:13:47

have been this Shanghai skyline,

0:13:470:13:48

which I've tarted up a bit on my smartphone.

0:13:480:13:51

And check this out from the Maldives.

0:13:510:13:54

Do keep your best coming in.

0:13:540:13:56

Anything quirky we love, and we'll try and show it out next time.

0:13:560:14:00

And don't forget the hashtag BBCTTS.

0:14:000:14:04

That's BBC The Travel Show, in case you hadn't figured it out.

0:14:040:14:08

Don't those hashtags make our lives much easier?

0:14:080:14:11

Time now to have a look at some websites and apps

Word Lens is a great concept.

0:14:170:14:19

Hold up your smartphone to something like a street sign or menu

0:14:190:14:23

0:14:230:14:26

It's just been snapped up by Google,

0:14:260:14:28

so expect to see it on Google Glass in the near future.

0:14:280:14:32

It's not always word-perfect,

0:14:320:14:33

and not available in some of the more complicated written languages like

0:14:330:14:37

Japanese, but it might just give you a good idea of what you are ordering.

0:14:370:14:42

At the moment, it's free to download

0:14:420:14:44

but rather sneakily, you have to pay almost 10 for a translation pack.

0:14:440:14:48

Drone photography has really taken off in the travel world.

0:14:500:14:53

0:15:280:15:31

about The Travel Show recently.

0:15:310:15:33

We had our knuckles rapped by RJ Mendera, who tweeted us

0:15:330:15:36

after seeing Christa helping to make beer at the Catskills Mountains

0:15:360:15:41

of America recently...

0:15:410:15:42

..no such health and hygiene concerns, though, from MK Col,

0:15:460:15:49

who paid us the ultimate accolade in this age of information overload...

0:15:490:15:54

..that's music to the producer's ears here!

0:15:570:15:59

Talking of music, it looks like we've helped Tim Kalyegira find the answer

0:15:590:16:03

to a question that's been bugging him for ten years.

0:16:030:16:06

SYMPHONIC PIECE PLAYS

0:16:060:16:10

Well, Tim, it's a track called Soviet by a band called

0:16:140:16:17

Electronic, on an album of the same name.

0:16:170:16:20

Keep those comments coming

0:16:200:16:22

and we'll do our best to get as many of them on The Travel Show next time.

0:16:220:16:25

See you then.

0:16:250:16:27

Thanks, Carmen.

0:16:310:16:32

Now, to end this week, we are off to the far north of Canada

0:16:320:16:36

where for centuries explorers

0:16:360:16:38

tried to find a sea route that would take them

0:16:380:16:41

from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the legendary Northwest Passage.

0:16:410:16:46

It was 70 years ago that a ship first managed to sail

0:16:460:16:49

the route non-stop through the crushing ice floes that

0:16:490:16:53

blocked the route for much of the year.

0:16:530:16:55

To celebrate their amazing achievement, Karen Bowerman has been

0:16:570:17:01

on a journey to try and recreate that historic first voyage.

0:17:010:17:04

-MAN:

-This is true adventure.

0:17:110:17:13

This truly is a journey, start to finish, and it's not a sure thing.

0:17:160:17:20

The challenges of the Northwest Passage...

0:17:220:17:26

For us, it would be ice and there's really nothing we can do about that.

0:17:260:17:30

My journey began at Sisimiut in Greenland,

0:17:400:17:43

a remote settlement at the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage.

0:17:430:17:47

# Ah, for just one time

0:17:470:17:52

# I would take the Northwest Passage

0:17:520:17:56

# To find... #

Along the coast from here, explorers set sail,

0:17:570:18:00

into a tangled, ice-packed archipelago of violent weather

0:18:000:18:04

and treacherous seas.

0:18:040:18:06

# And make the Northwest Passage to the sea. #

0:18:060:18:12

They wanted to discover a trade route.

0:18:120:18:15

All I want is to make it through.

0:18:150:18:18

Many people don't.

0:18:180:18:20

Sure enough, it's not long before the passage shows us what it's made of.

0:18:210:18:26

This is really quite something. We are in the middle of an Arctic storm.

0:18:300:18:35

The winds are about 55km an hour and the waves ten metres high.

0:18:350:18:40

And then, after ten hours, the skies clear

0:18:560:18:59

and we enter an icy wonderland.

0:18:590:19:01

There are around 50,000 icebergs in the Northwest Passage,

0:19:110:19:15

all are stunning. But this one takes our breath away.

0:19:150:19:19

It is 3km long and a massive 20 metres above the water.

0:19:190:19:24

It has probably come from the Petermann Glacier.

0:19:240:19:27

The glacier dropped off an iceberg about four times the size

0:19:270:19:32

of Manhattan in 2010, so three years later we are

0:19:320:19:35

still seeing pieces of it floating here in Baffin

0:19:350:19:39

and some of it is probably working its way down to Newfoundland.

0:19:390:19:42

Certainly we are expecting to see icebergs in the area,

0:19:420:19:45

but a big tabular one is a bit of a surprise.

0:19:450:19:48

By day six, we visit Pond Inlet,

0:19:590:20:01

a remote Inuit community on Baffin Island.

0:20:010:20:04

The islanders are hunters and fishermen.

0:20:040:20:07

We eat seal, narwhal,

0:20:120:20:15

walrus, fish, caribou,

0:20:150:20:18

we eat polar bears too.

0:20:180:20:21

And what does polar bear taste like?

0:20:210:20:23

It almost tastes like, you know, those spare ribs without sauce,

0:20:240:20:30

-without the sauce.

-Right, spare ribs?

-Yes.

0:20:300:20:34

-So when you have polar bear, is that a treat?

-Yes.

0:20:340:20:37

Everything that we, the hunters get is a treat.

0:20:380:20:43

-It makes a change from going to the two shops.

-Yes.

0:20:440:20:47

Today, it's summer.

0:20:520:20:53

The scenery is spectacular and the islanders can afford to smile

0:20:530:20:57

but a few months from now temperatures will plummet

0:20:570:21:00

and they will have to cope with almost endless nights.

0:21:000:21:04

When my journey continues, I realise life is just as challenging

0:21:140:21:17

for those that live along the passage as it is for us,

0:21:170:21:21

trying to navigate through it.

0:21:210:21:23

Well, that's your lot from The Travel Show this week

0:21:300:21:33

but coming up next week...

0:21:330:21:34

..join Henry as he learns to get the best travel snaps

0:21:360:21:39

-out of his smartphone.

-That's good, keep going.

0:21:390:21:42

Do you mind if I take a photo? Three, two, one.

0:21:420:21:45

And find out if Karen's ship finally reaches the Pacific, or will

0:21:500:21:55

the crushing pack ice bring her voyage to a sudden end?

0:21:550:21:58

That looks good. Make sure you catch it if you can.
