Hello, welcome to Freddie's ABC so it's goodbye from me, and on

:00:00.:00:10.

Hello, welcome to Freddie's ABC Channel Islands news. The headlines.

:00:11.:00:13.

`` BBC. Weather warning, the Islands brace

:00:14.:00:16.

themselves as more strong winds and high spring tides are likely to

:00:17.:00:23.

cause flooding in some areas. This weekend we had the second`highest

:00:24.:00:27.

tides of the year. Combine that with some strong winds and we have risk

:00:28.:00:31.

of coastal flooding. Also, a shopping surprise ` but

:00:32.:00:34.

should we really be shocked that groceries in the Islands cost up to

:00:35.:00:41.

60% more than in the UK? And police launch a fresh appeal for

:00:42.:00:44.

this Guernsey woman, one year on since she first went missing.

:00:45.:00:51.

At this point in time there is nothing at all that really gives us

:00:52.:00:56.

a strong line of investigation. It is a very strange case.

:00:57.:01:06.

Residents and businesses are preparing themselves for another

:01:07.:01:09.

weekend of wild weather, as more warnings are issued for the Channel

:01:10.:01:14.

Islands. There are concerns that strong winds combining with high

:01:15.:01:17.

spring tides could cause flooding in some areas. In Guernsey, it's the

:01:18.:01:21.

West Coast that's most likely to feel the impact. In Jersey, it's

:01:22.:01:24.

expected flooding and debris will come over sea walls this evening. It

:01:25.:01:28.

comes after a month of extreme weather across the Islands, as

:01:29.:01:37.

Christina Ghidoni reports. Guernsey has already been battered

:01:38.:01:41.

this month. And now there are more flood warnings for the Channel

:01:42.:01:46.

Islands. The emergency services in Guernsey met to plan for the bad

:01:47.:01:50.

weather. They are asking people to avoid the West Coast, especially

:01:51.:01:54.

around high tide tonight. In Jersey, it is the South Coast that risks

:01:55.:01:58.

flooding. Anna Trigg's bridal shop at Beaumont in Jersey has already

:01:59.:02:04.

been flooded twice in six years It cost her thousands. She believes

:02:05.:02:07.

more could be done to prevent water damage. The drains are quite shallow

:02:08.:02:12.

so when the see what comes, it rises there is no way `` nowhere for the

:02:13.:02:17.

sea to go. We would like the roads to be closed for half an arm while

:02:18.:02:22.

it is high tide. It will just stop the traffic that go through to fast,

:02:23.:02:28.

creating this wave of water that goes into the shop. The Met Office

:02:29.:02:32.

in Jersey have issued a red weather warning for tomorrow night and

:02:33.:02:35.

Sunday morning, something that usually happens once every six years

:02:36.:02:41.

or so, but it is the second one in recent times. It could result in

:02:42.:02:45.

some limited flooding around coastal areas. I think most people probably

:02:46.:02:50.

know where the most vulnerable properties are. This is an

:02:51.:02:53.

opportunity to take some action if you can. It is now hoped that not

:02:54.:03:00.

too much damage will because from the wet and windy weekend ahead

:03:01.:03:08.

Groceries can cost up to 60% more in the Channel Islands than the UK

:03:09.:03:13.

That's the results of a survey from the Competition and Regulatory

:03:14.:03:15.

Authority, which has been comparing prices. When it comes to buying at

:03:16.:03:26.

the cheapest prices, you could pay up to 60% less. Jen Smith explains.

:03:27.:03:35.

When you shop for everyday items in the Channel Islands, even searching

:03:36.:03:39.

for the lowest prices in store, it can still cost you cost up to ? 4

:03:40.:03:43.

more than the UK, according to the competition authority. It asked

:03:44.:03:49.

people to buy a basket of groceries for the cheapest possible price in

:03:50.:03:53.

the Channel Islands and in the UK. At the budget end, the mainland can

:03:54.:03:56.

be up to six to present cheaper The regulator says this is simply

:03:57.:04:00.

because we don't have the variety of budget stores available on the

:04:01.:04:04.

mainland. `` 60%. We have identified this quite big difference between

:04:05.:04:10.

Jersey and Guernsey and the UK, predominantly driven by the fact

:04:11.:04:14.

that a number of the cheaper supermarkets in the UK are not

:04:15.:04:17.

present on the Islands. We think if there is going to be expansion, if

:04:18.:04:21.

it happens at that discount end there are consumers who would

:04:22.:04:25.

benefit greatly. But what about comparing the supermarkets available

:04:26.:04:28.

here and in the UK? Well, it was a mixed pitcure. Waitrose and M came

:04:29.:04:32.

out as being more expensive, up to 8.4%. But M franchises and the

:04:33.:04:36.

Co`operative came out cheaper then their mainland counterparts. Iceland

:04:37.:04:41.

wasn't included in the study, the competition authority says that s

:04:42.:04:44.

because it offers a greater range of goods here. I think consumers

:04:45.:04:52.

overall a very well served. From the values that right through to the

:04:53.:04:55.

premium spectrum, with the retailers, but are working hard to

:04:56.:05:00.

serve the local population. But the majority of shoppers we spoke to

:05:01.:05:04.

said they want more choice. To come here and get more competition, it

:05:05.:05:09.

will not be a bad thing. It is a market where it needs competition.

:05:10.:05:14.

Tesco, Sainsbury's, anything like that. For the families who have a

:05:15.:05:22.

lot of children, I am lucky because I have two grown`ups. It does not

:05:23.:05:25.

worry me. We asked the supermarkets surveyed to ask why their food was

:05:26.:05:29.

more expensive. All said it was due to the higher costs of wages,

:05:30.:05:32.

distribution and property in the Islands, and insisted they were

:05:33.:05:34.

competitively priced. But the regulator says that the Islands need

:05:35.:05:37.

a broader range of supermarkets before consumers can pay less.

:05:38.:05:44.

Guernsey's Education Department has announced plans which will change

:05:45.:05:47.

the face of schooling. From September, the five schools in the

:05:48.:05:50.

Bailiwick, including St Anne's in Alderney, will form a Federation of

:05:51.:05:53.

Bailiwick Secondary Schools. The idea is to streamline resources and

:05:54.:05:57.

give all students the chance to study a wider curriculum. Well,

:05:58.:06:02.

earlier I spoke to Minister Robert Sillars and asked him what the

:06:03.:06:09.

reasoning was behind this decision. What we will see is the teacher time

:06:10.:06:15.

in front of pupils will be longer and the pupils will have a extra ten

:06:16.:06:20.

or 15 minutes in class each day which will add up to more than ten

:06:21.:06:24.

weeks extra tuition for the student from the 11 to 16 age group. That'll

:06:25.:06:30.

be a success in its own right. There has been some criticism from the

:06:31.:06:34.

teaching unions who claimed there was no consultation, what is your

:06:35.:06:39.

message to that? I have not that feedback of the meeting was with the

:06:40.:06:43.

unions yesterday, but we have worked very closely as a political board

:06:44.:06:49.

with our officers, and headteachers. A lot of work has been going on it

:06:50.:06:53.

has been for many years in reality. It has set the way forward and we

:06:54.:06:58.

will be consulting, and the teachers will be involved, as well the

:06:59.:07:04.

students and parents. More news now, and Doctor Karl

:07:05.:07:09.

Clinton has been crippled sexually motivated conduct towards two women.

:07:10.:07:13.

He was accused of behaving inappropriately when examining

:07:14.:07:20.

them. The panel in Manchester said the case showed some funny against

:07:21.:07:23.

his conduct in other matters and would meet again to decide if any of

:07:24.:07:28.

them mounted to misconduct. People gathered in Albany today to

:07:29.:07:32.

pay their respects to politician Paul Arditti. The church was packed

:07:33.:07:35.

to capacity with family and friends for the funeral of the former

:07:36.:07:39.

Alderney States member. He was the driving force behind calls for

:07:40.:07:43.

Guernsey to invest more in the airport. Tributes were paid to the

:07:44.:07:46.

safety to`year`old, who died suddenly last week. He was a man of

:07:47.:07:52.

strong principles, a strong sense of duty, and a great sense of fun. He

:07:53.:07:57.

could get fun out of any manner of things, from driving a train, to

:07:58.:08:05.

studying law. He was a man who looked for the best in life.

:08:06.:08:08.

Meanwhile, a former Jersey Lieutenant Governor was honoured at

:08:09.:08:11.

a military memorial service in the UK today. Sir Michael Wilkes died

:08:12.:08:15.

from cancer at the age of 73 at the end of October. He served as the

:08:16.:08:18.

Queen's representative in Jersey between 1995 and 2000.

:08:19.:08:21.

There's a fresh appeal this evening for information about a Guernsey

:08:22.:08:24.

woman who's been missing for the past year. Police are still

:08:25.:08:26.

investigating the disappearance of Gillian Sarahs, and are hoping to

:08:27.:08:29.

shed light on her movements around the time she was last seen. Penny

:08:30.:08:33.

Elderfield reports. Last seen a year ago. Gillian's

:08:34.:08:37.

whereabouts are still unknown. And still looking for her, Guernsey

:08:38.:08:40.

Police are still looking for anyone who may have information that could

:08:41.:08:49.

help. The ball may have heard on the grapevine that may not miss a surly

:08:50.:08:53.

have come to the attention of the police. So, please speak to us, it

:08:54.:08:56.

may be that little piece of information that allows us to begin

:08:57.:08:59.

a particular line of enquiry which may make progress. It was at her

:09:00.:09:02.

home on Victoria Avenue that her family last saw her. They're still

:09:03.:09:06.

too emotional to talk publicly, but did want to say this. We have been

:09:07.:09:12.

overwhelmed by the community spirit and the support the whole island

:09:13.:09:14.

have shown us. We want to thank everyone involved, including those

:09:15.:09:20.

who at a moment's notice dropped everything and went out to help

:09:21.:09:22.

search for her. We would also like to appeal for anyone who can think

:09:23.:09:27.

of anything, however trivial, that may help open a new line of enquiry

:09:28.:09:30.

for the police, to please come forward. Anyone with any information

:09:31.:09:33.

that could help find Gillian is being asked to contact the police.

:09:34.:09:43.

This is the BBC News in the Channel Islands. Still ahead in

:09:44.:09:46.

Spotlight... Say hello to the wood sisters, and

:09:47.:09:51.

their storytelling with a difference.

:09:52.:09:56.

The amount of household waste being dumped in Guernsey has fallen over

:09:57.:09:59.

the recent years, with the island boasting a recycling rate of almost

:10:00.:10:02.

50%. But what about when those houses are renovated? You would

:10:03.:10:09.

think items like timber could be we cycled. Well, our reporter Mike

:10:10.:10:12.

Wilkins is in the process of doing his property up and has a lot of

:10:13.:10:17.

waste to get rid of. But as Mike reports, most of it will have to go

:10:18.:10:21.

to the the only landfill site, which is rapidly filling up.

:10:22.:10:23.

I am doing a bit of house renovation. I have a lot of

:10:24.:10:27.

materials that I need to dispose of. The options are to either get a skip

:10:28.:10:32.

or dispose of it myself. I have called the States and have been told

:10:33.:10:36.

that all this needs to go into the landfill. Let's find out why. Here I

:10:37.:10:44.

am at the recycling centre in Guernsey. A bit of a blustery day.

:10:45.:10:47.

Here, you can bring things like Listerine and cardboard. I have got

:10:48.:10:55.

the recycling officer with me now. I was a bit disappointed that I could

:10:56.:10:58.

not recycle that much from a house renovation. What can be done about

:10:59.:11:05.

it? There is a lot you can recycle when you are renovating a house and

:11:06.:11:08.

we see a huge to material coming into this site. Have PVC windows,

:11:09.:11:15.

aluminium window frames. We have been for inert waste, things like

:11:16.:11:19.

old ceramics, chipped tiles. Other are some things that we cannot

:11:20.:11:23.

recycle and they do have to go to landfill. What plans are there to

:11:24.:11:27.

maybe recycle materials that cannot be recycled at the moment? We are

:11:28.:11:32.

doing a trial on mattresses, that a successful, things like old carpet

:11:33.:11:37.

could join in with that material stream, for five recycling. We are

:11:38.:11:43.

always looking for new outlets. `` fight for recycling. But we cannot

:11:44.:11:46.

be cycle absolutely everything and we have to weigh up what is

:11:47.:11:51.

feasible. Thank you very much. So, there are plenty of things that can

:11:52.:11:55.

be recycled, but in my case, most of my stuff will have to go into the

:11:56.:11:59.

landfill. We never knew Mike was such a proper

:12:00.:12:06.

builder! Flights between Alderney and Guernsey have been cancelled

:12:07.:12:10.

tonight. Now, let's have a look at the weather forecast.

:12:11.:12:16.

We are concerned about the strength of the wind. And also the strength

:12:17.:12:21.

of the wind coinciding with some witty high tides. The tides we have

:12:22.:12:25.

on Sunday morning will be the second highest that we will see throughout

:12:26.:12:30.

the entire year. Those tides are especially high. That is being

:12:31.:12:35.

helped why the strength of the wind and the low pressure. Tomorrow we

:12:36.:12:39.

have gale force winds, showers, and for all of us it is going to feel

:12:40.:12:44.

pretty cold. This is the culprit, this low pressure. It seems like it

:12:45.:12:49.

is a long way away, but look at the size of the space it is taking up.

:12:50.:12:55.

All these strong winds lying around the southern flank of that low are

:12:56.:12:57.

heading towards the North West corner of France and the Channel

:12:58.:13:01.

Islands. That moves further South over the next 24 hours. So, some

:13:02.:13:08.

very big waves will develop. By Sunday, a slight change in the wind

:13:09.:13:13.

direction. Sunday is a much quieter spell of weather, still the risk of

:13:14.:13:17.

showers and some coastal flooding. The reason we have a risk of coastal

:13:18.:13:21.

flooding is the strength of wind, the low pressure, very high tides

:13:22.:13:26.

and also, all the water we have seen running off into the seaside. So

:13:27.:13:30.

expect to see a risk of coastal flooding throughout the weekend But

:13:31.:13:34.

the really strong winds will be getting going towards the end of the

:13:35.:13:38.

day tomorrow. I will give you those times of high water. Of course, a

:13:39.:13:50.

similar time in the evening. Rain is moving out of the way overnight

:13:51.:13:53.

tonight and we are left with a scattering of showers. As the rain

:13:54.:13:57.

clears it brings in cold air, so to bridge is by the morning starting

:13:58.:14:00.

the day at just three or four Celsius. So it will be a pretty

:14:01.:14:05.

entered day. There will be some sunshine off and on stop at the end

:14:06.:14:08.

of the afternoon, the showers perhaps more isolated. But still

:14:09.:14:13.

there, nonetheless. Strong to gale force winds, possibly severe for a

:14:14.:14:17.

time. That is the coastal waters forecast. 30 of showers around,

:14:18.:14:28.

moderate visibility. In the morning, the state of the sea is likely to be

:14:29.:14:32.

rough. Those waves will increase through the weekend, possibly to ten

:14:33.:14:38.

feet. Quieter on Sunday, another area of low pressure, yet more wet

:14:39.:14:43.

weather and strong winds as we move into Monday. So, take care.

:14:44.:14:49.

I figure I will stay in bed by the look of that weather! That's all for

:14:50.:14:59.

now. BBC Radio Kent sea and Jersey `` Guernsey will have of the litters

:15:00.:15:07.

travel news. Have a good evening. `` latest travel news.

:15:08.:15:15.

been no further confirmed never ever since March last year.

:15:16.:15:23.

`` never events. You are watching Spotlight.

:15:24.:15:26.

We will have the latest on the weather later. Also still ahead, the

:15:27.:15:31.

pride of Southwest Rugby bash Exeter Chiefs' Jack Nowell picks up his

:15:32.:15:37.

first England cap in this week's six Nations opener.

:15:38.:15:43.

And find out what these colourful characters are doing at South Devon

:15:44.:15:44.

school. Businesses in the region say they're

:15:45.:15:53.

being held back by business rates that are set unrealistically high.

:15:54.:15:56.

Business rates are a tax based on the value of the premises firms

:15:57.:15:59.

occupy. The problem is, the last valuation was done near the top of

:16:00.:16:03.

the last property boom. Our business correspondent Neil Gallacher reports

:16:04.:16:05.

from one street that's now reeling from the result.

:16:06.:16:13.

Richard Brewster's shop is full of batteries unlike bowls, mainly. His

:16:14.:16:21.

highly specialised business in Plymouth's New George Street is

:16:22.:16:24.

doing well, and as time goes by, he is thinking of moving to a larger

:16:25.:16:28.

unit. There are suitable sites nearby, except for one thing. During

:16:29.:16:32.

the recession, rents have come down but business rates have not. It is a

:16:33.:16:37.

nationwide problem. We have now got to a situation where some of these

:16:38.:16:41.

shots, the rent might be 30,000, but the payable rate could be 50 or

:16:42.:16:45.

60,000. It is going to mean that these shops are probably not going

:16:46.:16:49.

to be filled, purely and Sibley because of business rates. At the

:16:50.:16:56.

Bartlett is one trader who did move to a bigger unit and no worries

:16:57.:16:59.

about how she can pay the business rates. They are as much as her rent

:17:00.:17:03.

bill, a situation that would have been an thinkable if you years ago.

:17:04.:17:07.

It would be very nice, and it would be a dream come true, if they could

:17:08.:17:13.

do something about this. A lot of us work seven days a week for business

:17:14.:17:19.

rates. I open seven days a week. I just want one day free. If I am not

:17:20.:17:26.

well, who will help me? The government has said delaying the

:17:27.:17:28.

re`evaluation of business rates has a lease brought financial stability

:17:29.:17:35.

to business. But some senior business figures in the south`west

:17:36.:17:37.

think that would only apply to London. They are convinced a

:17:38.:17:41.

revaluation here would only cut rates bills for companies. The

:17:42.:17:46.

government, by any language, are using this as a stealth tax. They

:17:47.:17:52.

need to get a new revaluation that accurately reflects market

:17:53.:17:56.

conditions. This is penalising a lot of businesses, many of whom are

:17:57.:17:59.

paying as much in rates of AI in rent. There are more than rates

:18:00.:18:06.

bills keeping retailers await. Competition from online is a cut

:18:07.:18:10.

huge challenge to which the High Street has no firm answer. But

:18:11.:18:14.

campaigners say a rate re`evaluation is at least something within the

:18:15.:18:17.

control of the government. Time for the sport now, and it's a

:18:18.:18:21.

big weekend for young Cornishman Jack Nowell, isn't it, Dave?

:18:22.:18:24.

It promises to be a memorable weekend for Exeter Chiefs wing Jack

:18:25.:18:29.

Nowell. The 20`year`old is one of two new caps in the England rugby

:18:30.:18:32.

team to face France in Paris on Saturday evening. It's been an

:18:33.:18:36.

astounding rise for the young man, who's the son of a trawler skipper

:18:37.:18:44.

from Newlyn. Newlyn harbour, the main and biggest

:18:45.:18:48.

fishing port of Cornwall. But this peaceful corner of the county, which

:18:49.:18:52.

boasts stunning views across mounts Bay, will be on the map for a

:18:53.:18:56.

completely different reason this weekend. Jack Nowell, the son of a

:18:57.:19:01.

Newlyn fisherman will be an international rugby player by the

:19:02.:19:05.

end of Saturday. His breakthrough into Exeter Chiefs' first team has

:19:06.:19:09.

brought in to the attention of England's head coach Stuart

:19:10.:19:12.

Lancaster, who has given Jack his chance to perform in the six Nations

:19:13.:19:16.

championship stage. I have been given this opportunity, and for me,

:19:17.:19:20.

I really want to take it. It is a big step for me. And then,

:19:21.:19:25.

obviously, the under 20s stuff was massive for me, and to be put in an

:19:26.:19:28.

given this opportunity, I am very grateful for that. I am really

:19:29.:19:33.

looking forward to it. The confidence his club give him, and

:19:34.:19:36.

they have in the selections. How highly they regard him. The first

:19:37.:19:42.

name on the team sheet, really, in the back line. His ability to beat

:19:43.:19:46.

defenders, he beats more than any other player in the premiership.

:19:47.:19:51.

Meanwhile, back in Newlyn, his family prepare for his debut in

:19:52.:19:55.

France. The Miro tea`time. He started when he was five, but it

:19:56.:19:58.

wasn't something I thought he would immediately take two. He spent the

:19:59.:20:02.

first few months crying, holding onto my leg and saying he did not

:20:03.:20:06.

want to play. Eventually, he watched enough people and thought he would

:20:07.:20:09.

give it a go, and off he went, and he has never looked back. I think to

:20:10.:20:17.

start with, he will get a few eyeballs, with them picking up the

:20:18.:20:20.

youngster. He will get a few eyeballs, make a few breaks, and get

:20:21.:20:26.

on with the game. He never gets nervous. I always get nervous for

:20:27.:20:31.

him. Well, that is what he tells us. And as we were about to leave,

:20:32.:20:36.

another member of the family burst in. Frankly, his younger brother,

:20:37.:20:40.

had scored five goals in his school's football match. Another one

:20:41.:20:44.

to Jack's club, Exeter Chiefs, have the chance to qualify for the

:20:45.:20:47.

semi`finals of the Anglo`Welsh Cup this weekend.

:20:48.:20:49.

That's if they gain a bonus point victory at Worcester and Sale Sharks

:20:50.:20:54.

fail to do the same at Ospreys tonight. In the Championship, the

:20:55.:20:57.

Cornish Pirates should be too good for bottom side Ealing Trailfinders

:20:58.:21:00.

in Penzance on Sunday. At the Brickfields tomorrow, promotion

:21:01.:21:03.

favourites London Welsh will give Plymouth Albion a hard time as

:21:04.:21:06.

Albion look for their first league win since November.

:21:07.:21:12.

The weekend's football sees Yeovil Town attempt to do the double over

:21:13.:21:15.

Nottingham Forest. They beat them 3`1 at Huish Park last October and

:21:16.:21:18.

hope for a repeat against fifth`placed Forest to move them off

:21:19.:21:21.

the bottom of the Championship. Without a win since New Year's Day,

:21:22.:21:25.

Plymouth Argyle try to rectify that against Mansfield Town at Home Park,

:21:26.:21:28.

while Exeter City, with just two wins in the last 15 games, bid to

:21:29.:21:32.

stop their slide down League Two with a good result at Burton Albion.

:21:33.:21:39.

Winger Danny Stevens is back with Torquay United on a short`term

:21:40.:21:42.

contract until the end of the season. He could feature at

:21:43.:21:51.

Portsmouth. Finally, keep an eye on the weather

:21:52.:21:54.

tonight and tomorrow as it could affect your game. Just check with

:21:55.:21:58.

your BBC local radio station and BBC Sport online if it's on or off.

:21:59.:22:08.

Thank you very much. Now, it is probably not the first time if you

:22:09.:22:12.

told tales have been told in school, but the youngsters hearing the story

:22:13.:22:16.

in Totnes today were actually being treated to the rehearsals for a

:22:17.:22:22.

storytelling festival. The Would Sisters Winter Festival is one of

:22:23.:22:25.

the biggest one`day events launching National storytelling, and Johnny

:22:26.:22:28.

Rutherford has been along to hear a few stories.

:22:29.:22:37.

Storytelling is one of the most ancient communicative arts. This is

:22:38.:22:42.

a miming play, where 17th`century people in the community would

:22:43.:22:45.

disguise themselves and act out stories to raise some cash. This is

:22:46.:22:50.

a story where an extremely dubious looking midwife brings somebody back

:22:51.:22:54.

to life from the dead, and as you saw, the children love it. Everybody

:22:55.:23:00.

laughs. It is really a sneak preview of tomorrow's storytelling festival.

:23:01.:23:03.

Local and international storytellers will join in a full day of tales,

:23:04.:23:09.

including music, poetry, and dance, at the school. In the UK, there has

:23:10.:23:13.

been a huge revival of the old tradition, in the idea that our

:23:14.:23:16.

brains are wired to understand stories. That is what our ancestors

:23:17.:23:20.

did for thousands of years before they could write. They told stories.

:23:21.:23:25.

The spectators today certainly understood that good storytelling is

:23:26.:23:29.

essential. Same ago I find it is really interesting, because you are

:23:30.:23:32.

not in the time it happened, so you don't really know what happened. You

:23:33.:23:37.

are just telling a version that you know. It could be ` no, it is

:23:38.:23:45.

crucial in education of learning how to use your imagination and learning

:23:46.:23:51.

in what ways to use it. This is the 14th year of national story we, and

:23:52.:23:55.

17,000 people are expected to join in. That is quite a few tales.

:23:56.:24:03.

Time for the weather now. It is looking pretty dreadful.

:24:04.:24:07.

looking It is, yes, not only the strength of

:24:08.:24:11.

wins, but high tides, as you just heard. First, a quick summary. It is

:24:12.:24:15.

very windy, winds ease a little on Sunday, and it also turns a bit

:24:16.:24:20.

colder with showers tomorrow morning. They could have a wintry

:24:21.:24:25.

flavour. The main concern is the severe flood warnings that have been

:24:26.:24:28.

issued throughout the afternoon. The Environment Agency's website has

:24:29.:24:32.

them under flood warnings. Or you can telephone them. The number is on

:24:33.:24:41.

the screen. The combination of the exceptionally high tides, strong

:24:42.:24:45.

winds and very low pressure, and of course, all that water draining down

:24:46.:24:49.

into the rivers and estuaries. A great big area of low pressure, well

:24:50.:24:53.

in charge of most of the North Atlantic. This centre is going to

:24:54.:24:58.

travel down towards us overnight and into tomorrow, so even stronger

:24:59.:25:02.

winds tomorrow. There will be showers, perhaps not lengthy spells

:25:03.:25:05.

of rain, but the showers are fairly potent. One or two of them could be

:25:06.:25:09.

wintry. But it is the strength of wind that increases throughout the

:25:10.:25:12.

day, and by Sunday it is a little bit quieter. Still a breezy day for

:25:13.:25:17.

all. There is the rain we saw earlier. That is beginning to move

:25:18.:25:21.

out of the way. Behind that, something more clear. Cold air will

:25:22.:25:25.

flood in, so the showers will turning pleasingly wintry, and

:25:26.:25:29.

perhaps overly high ground of the murderers, they will deposit snow

:25:30.:25:31.

was leaked by the end of the night. It will be a cold one as well. ``

:25:32.:25:38.

the moors. Plos one or plus two degrees. That is cold enough for the

:25:39.:25:41.

risk of ice, so we have another warning about the risk of its early

:25:42.:25:45.

tomorrow morning. Shannon Lee rain that will come and go throughout the

:25:46.:25:48.

day will be to wrap a time in the world be some sunshine in between

:25:49.:25:52.

the showers, but the focus must be on the strength of wind,

:25:53.:25:55.

particularly across the North Cornwall coast and the North Devon

:25:56.:25:58.

coast through the Bristol Channel, where there could be gusts of wind

:25:59.:26:03.

of 60 to 70 mph. That is another Met Office morning for you but the

:26:04.:26:06.

strength of wind tomorrow. Gale force if not severe gale force will

:26:07.:26:12.

stop really big gusts. This is around 3pm to 6pm in the evening.

:26:13.:26:17.

Those are our temperatures tomorrow. Six or seven degrees. It will feel

:26:18.:26:22.

cold, so wrapped up warmly. For the Isles of Scilly, windy here as well

:26:23.:26:26.

with blustery showers. The waves at the end of the day tomorrow. The

:26:27.:26:30.

important high water times ` at Padstow, 6:15am. At Minehead 7:15am,

:26:31.:26:39.

and the beach is likely to be pretty dangerous tomorrow. On the north

:26:40.:26:42.

coast, between ten and 15 feet, and for surfers, it is not really worth

:26:43.:26:47.

a try. Here are the coastal waters. Wessel south`westerly seven or gale

:26:48.:26:52.

force eight, increasing nine, possibly gusts of wind to storm

:26:53.:26:57.

force ten tomorrow afternoon. E showers with generally a mainly good

:26:58.:27:00.

visibility. On Sunday, perhaps a chance to quieten down. The highest

:27:01.:27:06.

tides are on Sunday morning. Monday, more wet weather arrives, and

:27:07.:27:09.

another morning heavy rain, again becoming windy. Take care this

:27:10.:27:14.

weekend. Thank you very much. Our top story is, of course, the

:27:15.:27:18.

weather tonight. In the past few minutes, Cornwall Council has said

:27:19.:27:21.

that residents living in properties known to be high risk of flooding in

:27:22.:27:28.

Bude and Portugal should leave homes and seek temporary accommodation

:27:29.:27:31.

around the times of high tide on Saturday. Council officers are

:27:32.:27:36.

visiting or properties at risk in Bude, pure and elsewhere. You can

:27:37.:27:40.

get the latest on your local BBC Radio three. That will have special

:27:41.:27:43.

programmes the night until 10pm. From everyone here, goodbye.
