For the first time, States`run care homes in Jersey will be inspected

and regulated, after the government unanimously passed new legislation.

The Health Minister herself told the assembly that the current

system wasn't fit for purpose and didn't protect people from `buse.

From carers not turning up to work, two court cases over the qu`lity of

care. Jersey's legislation did not protect those that needed it. There

have been a few complaints hnto the inspection Department about the type

of care being given. A couple of those have ended up in court. It is

hoped the new law will change that. Previously, only private care homes

in Jersey were inspected. Now, States care homes will be checked.

Carers will have two meet standards. We are aware that there is ` big gap

in the law, agencies providhng care in the community haven't bedn

regulated or inspected. There was a rush to put this through thd States

and nobody voted against it. A clear sign that things weren't right. It

is a complex law and one th`t will take time to iron out. If all goes

to plan, within the next two years, Jersey's care system will bdhave

up, Is Hopeful For A Bright Future. Guernsey's government has

commissioned a survey of local businesses to identify

skills gaps in the local workforce. They say the results will hdlp shape

training courses on offer and help reduce the island's

reliance on housing licences. A butcher, a baker,

a candlestick maker. Traditional jobs from the ntrsery

rhyme, but still valid todax. There's not many butchers ldft in

the island, so going into bttchery It's always good to have

a trade behind your belt. I think it's that there are no

bakers in the island, or very few Bakery is one of the jobs where

you need to get your hands dirty, so You can't learn it out of a book,

you have to physically work in a bakery,

practising the methods needdd. It would be nice

if there were more young people with With the island's dependencx

on the finance industry, one skill we're not lacking here

in Guernsey is economics. But if we broaden it out further,

we see there are many other skills The States have been thinking about

how to manage the population, which is why they want to get the people

already here up to date with their skills to utilise them, so xou don't

unnecessarily bring additional people onto the island,

with all the cost and extra burden Elaine and her team are askhng 00

to 400 businesses to take p`rt And if skills are lacking,

training can be provided. Knowing the skills that Guernsey

needs to develop its economx is important, and if we can help people

who are not in work to develop their skills, then they can becomd part

of the work force, so absolttely. The results will be ready

by September, then it's up to local islanders to

give the employers what thex need. Evidence of the first Iron @ge house
