Good evening. That's all

:00:00.:00:13.

Shops in St Helier will open later on Thursdays from next week in

:00:14.:00:16.

With internet shopping growing, footfall in town declining

:00:17.:00:22.

and plans for Sunday trading shelved, retailers wanted action.

:00:23.:00:27.

But will opening for longer persuade islanders to

:00:28.:00:29.

A busy Wednesday in St Helier, as islanders and visitors alike

:00:30.:00:40.

And it's busy scenes like the one behind me that

:00:41.:00:43.

shopkeepers in St Helier want to emanate on a Thursday night.

:00:44.:00:46.

Under the plans, shops large and small will be given the opportunity

:00:47.:00:49.

to stay open until 7pm on a Thursday evening for the next 18 months.

:00:50.:00:52.

They say it will encourage football through the door

:00:53.:00:56.

We did a survey a couple of months ago and

:00:57.:01:03.

the response we had from the public was that there was the appetite for

:01:04.:01:06.

7pm was the time people said they would like to shop until and

:01:07.:01:13.

Thursday was the day traditionally associated with late`night

:01:14.:01:16.

If it was open on a Thursday evening you could do all your shopping.

:01:17.:01:30.

Meet up with friends, go and do some shopping

:01:31.:01:34.

We used to do it years ago and it was great.

:01:35.:01:39.

I try to do everything during the week Monday to Friday,

:01:40.:01:42.

David Cullen runs this clothes shop on Queen Street.

:01:43.:01:51.

He's just opened and says he hasn't ruled out the idea.

:01:52.:01:54.

I think it would work if all of the retailers go for it together.

:01:55.:01:57.

If we all grouped together, it would be good for the town.

:01:58.:02:04.

And it's smaller, off the main high street stores,

:02:05.:02:07.

like this one in Liberty Wharf, that are being targeted too.

:02:08.:02:11.

We know that people want extra hours and I am asked for it all the time.

:02:12.:02:16.

The tourists in the summer are always shocked

:02:17.:02:19.

Town has become a great place to socialise and we need people to

:02:20.:02:28.

Back on the shop floor, customers in this shop keep spending.

:02:29.:02:38.

The trial starts next week for 18 months in a bid to get more

:02:39.:02:42.

of us through the doors and get more tills ringing with cash.

:02:43.:02:51.

The amount of crime in Jersey linked to drinking in town at night has

:02:52.:02:54.

continued to fall There's been a 10% drop this year in St Helier,

:02:55.:02:57.

which follows the trend from last year, when the level fell by 30%

:02:58.:03:01.

Police say they are focusing their efforts on St Helier's streets

:03:02.:03:07.

It's been two years since the States of Guernsey was defrauded

:03:08.:03:15.

of millions of pounds over a rogue payment for its airport upgrade.

:03:16.:03:18.

But the government's not the only target.

:03:19.:03:19.

Guernsey Police say they've seen a significant increase

:03:20.:03:23.

in online crime, which is costing islanders millions of pounds.

:03:24.:03:26.

And it could be because the island is seen

:03:27.:03:29.

Spending time and money online can be more convenient in our busy lives

:03:30.:03:37.

but by entering personal information, it exposes us to a new

:03:38.:03:40.

According to the police, millions of pounds are being stolen in Guernsey

:03:41.:03:47.

And even then, it could be the tip of the iceberg.

:03:48.:03:55.

I think we get a lot of underreporting.

:03:56.:03:58.

That might be an individual who, because of personal embarrassment,

:03:59.:04:01.

may not report the problems, right up to companies who,

:04:02.:04:06.

because of reputational damage, that may cause them to take the hit

:04:07.:04:11.

We would always urge people to report it.

:04:12.:04:18.

The most common cases involve fraudulent emails claiming to

:04:19.:04:24.

be from your bank asking you to share information.

:04:25.:04:28.

In the building behind me is the financial investigation unit

:04:29.:04:30.

and the data in there is so confidential that I have not been

:04:31.:04:33.

They have told me that some of the scams they are seeing have

:04:34.:04:42.

been traditional, such as letters, to advanced, through online dating

:04:43.:04:48.

and cases of islanders who have paid tens of thousands of pounds to

:04:49.:04:52.

Some financial companies have been hacked and paid thousands of

:04:53.:05:15.

And it appears Guernsey is frequently targeted by scammers

:05:16.:05:19.

I would accept that people can perceive those from Guernsey

:05:20.:05:23.

as a soft touch but I would also say that, whatever

:05:24.:05:26.

the truth, it is perceived as an island with lots of money.

:05:27.:05:29.

The advice from the police is to always be wary of

:05:30.:05:33.

any emails you receive from anyone asking you to share your information

:05:34.:05:36.

In Guernsey, the old crime of fraud has found a new low`risk,

:05:37.:05:40.

Jersey's Durrell Wildlife Trust is being credited with helping save

:05:41.:05:50.

five of the world's top ten most critically

:05:51.:05:52.

They include the Mountain Chicken frog, the Komodo Dragon

:05:53.:05:57.

The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums has put

:05:58.:06:02.

together a list of the top ten reptiles and amphibians benefiting

:06:03.:06:05.

That is the late news from us. We will be back at 630 p.m. Tomorrow.

:06:06.:06:22.

`` 6:30am to five. I leave you with the weather. We are keeping me

:06:23.:06:29.

unsettled weather for the last `` against few days. Fight at first

:06:30.:06:35.

tomorrow with childless by the evening. Still some showers for the

:06:36.:06:40.

next couple of hours for us but claiming through overnight, leaving

:06:41.:06:48.

us with a dry story. Mild overnight with 15 degrees below. Heading into

:06:49.:06:53.

tomorrow, generally dry first thing. Sunny spells. As we go through the

:06:54.:07:00.

day though, it will become increasingly cloudy. Temperature

:07:01.:07:06.

wise, not bad, but as I say, the cloud is building and eventually,

:07:07.:07:14.

rain will arrive in the evening. Looking ahead to Friday, another

:07:15.:07:18.

unsettled day with the chance of a few showers, increasingly cloudy,

:07:19.:07:27.

and similar for the weekend. Often cloudy but warm.

:07:28.:07:43.

It looks like low pressure will see us out for what is rest of August.

:07:44.:07:51.

It looks as if next week, summer will fight back. Low pressure is

:07:52.:07:56.

approaching the UK. Rainfall totals are not adding up to too much. There

:07:57.:08:01.

is some low cloud and hill fog around. Clearer skies reaching the

:08:02.:08:06.

South West later in the night. Temperatures for Northern England

:08:07.:08:09.

and Scotland going nowhere near as far down as they have done recently.

:08:10.:08:15.

A lot of this rain is coming through overnight, so behind it, many of us

:08:16.:08:19.

will start the day tomorrow dry with some hazy sunshine. The last of that

:08:20.:08:23.

rain beginning to edge away from Eastern Counties of England into the

:08:24.:08:28.

North Sea. And, again, many of us starting dry, drier weather heading

:08:29.:08:31.

into southern Scotland. For northern Scotland, after several days of

:08:32.:08:35.

sunshine, this might come as a shock - the rain won't last all day, much

:08:36.:08:41.

of it will have cleared by the

:08:42.:08:42.
