here in Edinburgh. That is all for tonight. Newsnight is

:00:00.:00:09.

Good evening from the news in the Channel Islands.

:00:10.:00:11.

Most islanders who lose a spouse won't get a survivor's pension

:00:12.:00:13.

after Jersey's states rejected the benefit as too generous.

:00:14.:00:15.

It was changed last year and today's move to reinstate it failed.

:00:16.:00:18.

Only those in their late fifties, or who have children in full`time

:00:19.:00:21.

That's left some widowers struggling,

:00:22.:00:25.

Her husband of 29 years died of a heart attack at home.

:00:26.:00:39.

When she went to Social Security to find out how will she be supported

:00:40.:00:43.

in future, she was given even more bad news.

:00:44.:00:45.

Nikki was a red card holder, meaning she relied

:00:46.:00:47.

on her husband's contributions, but changes to the benefit system meant

:00:48.:00:52.

Really, I need my government to look after me

:00:53.:00:56.

Where are my husband's contributions that he thought would safeguard me?

:00:57.:01:01.

They changed the age of widow's pensions six weeks before he died.

:01:02.:01:03.

I just want my government to help me.

:01:04.:01:06.

But today, the States decided not to help people like Nikki,

:01:07.:01:12.

as they voted heavily against reviewing Deputy Geoff

:01:13.:01:15.

Southern's proposal to restore the survivor's pension for everyone.

:01:16.:01:21.

I think it is likely to engender a deep, deep distrust

:01:22.:01:26.

It is about money first and people second.

:01:27.:01:32.

The Social Security Minister said the change in the law three years

:01:33.:01:37.

Yes, we were making savings as a result of the decision,

:01:38.:01:49.

That benefit was far too generous, particularly once it was open to

:01:50.:01:55.

I took the action, the State backed me, and I am very

:01:56.:02:03.

Nikki feels let down by her government.

:02:04.:02:08.

Unable to find employment, not entitled for income support,

:02:09.:02:11.

and with only a small pension of her own, she could lose her house.

:02:12.:02:14.

Her pleas went unanswered today, but the States are sure they have

:02:15.:02:17.

One of Guernsey's biggest tourist attractions has gone

:02:18.:02:29.

Oatlands Village, which includes shops,

:02:30.:02:33.

restaurants and crazy golf, has been running for more than 30 years.

:02:34.:02:37.

The administrators say they're looking at every possible

:02:38.:02:39.

First opened in 1983, it is one of Guernsey's best`known

:02:40.:02:47.

It is the only place in the island that brings together activities

:02:48.:02:52.

like crazy golf and go`karting with restaurants and shops.

:02:53.:02:56.

Only a couple of months ago, the owners got permission to build

:02:57.:03:00.

The court has agreed that the company is insolvent.

:03:01.:03:09.

Whilst there are plans which may still go ahead, the company has

:03:10.:03:13.

Many of the small businesses here rent their space from the owners

:03:14.:03:21.

Most I have spoken to said they feel like business is going well,

:03:22.:03:29.

How the tenants are getting on is for them, it is not something

:03:30.:03:38.

The place is all but one space fully tenanted,

:03:39.:03:42.

so things are looking quite good for tenants in here at the moment.

:03:43.:03:47.

We are coming into winter now when the maintenance gets done,

:03:48.:03:57.

but it still carries on through the winter.

:03:58.:04:02.

Thousands of visitors come here every year.

:04:03.:04:04.

It is one of the island's best`known attractions.

:04:05.:04:07.

The administrators say they will do everything possible to find a new

:04:08.:04:10.

buyer, but in the meantime it is business as usual, but for how long?

:04:11.:04:25.

Jersey's Treasury Minister will face a vote of no confidence next week.

:04:26.:04:27.

Senator Philip Ozouf faces criticism that

:04:28.:04:29.

The debate will take place on Tuesday,

:04:30.:04:34.

the same day as Senator nominations for the forthcoming elections.

:04:35.:04:37.

Senator Ozouf said this debate would signal

:04:38.:04:40.

The only two flying Lancaster bombers in the world have arrived

:04:41.:04:48.

This was them flanked by a Spitfire and Hurricane arriving into

:04:49.:04:55.

One is from Britain, the other Canada, and they'll both

:04:56.:05:00.

take part in the air displays tomorrow, the last time islanders

:05:01.:05:03.

The attraction is not to see one fly. The attraction, the big

:05:04.:05:22.

emphasis, is to get them together for what we think will probably be

:05:23.:05:27.

the last time in history. It may happen again, we really don't know,

:05:28.:05:32.

but when the prospect came up, my boss said if not us, who? If not

:05:33.:05:39.

now, when? It is always great to be flying these fantastic aircraft

:05:40.:05:42.

anyway, but to have these two fantastic Lancaster is flanked by a

:05:43.:05:46.

Howard can and a Spitfire is amazing. It is undoubtedly a

:05:47.:05:48.

highlight of all my years of flying. A bit of sport news now, and

will stop now, the weather. More fine weather to enjoy across

:06:01.:06:20.

the channel islands, and at the moment I can't see any rain falling

:06:21.:06:24.

at all into the weekend. Fine and dry with more warm sunshine

:06:25.:06:27.

tomorrow. Slightly more of an easterly breeze developing through

:06:28.:06:32.

tomorrow which will be noticeable particularly across Alderney and the

:06:33.:06:34.

north Coast of Guernsey. Amateurs getting down to 14 or 15 degrees ``

:06:35.:06:42.

temperatures. After some patchy low cloud tomorrow, it will brighten up

:06:43.:06:46.

and we may see a fresh breeze than of late. Temperatures 17 on the

:06:47.:06:56.

coast, inland will reach 21 Celsius. It is an easterly wind which

:06:57.:07:01.

continues into the weekend, and it will bring more cloud. It may not be

:07:02.:07:06.

immediate on the start of the day on Thursday, but there is more cloud

:07:07.:07:09.

developing into the afternoon. It will most likely affect Alderney. A

:07:10.:07:15.

fresh breeze as well. Into the weekend, similar temperatures,

:07:16.:07:20.

possibly up to 21 degrees, but more cloud coming our way, and that will

:07:21.:07:26.

thicken as we start the weekend. In a moment, the full national

:07:27.:07:29.

forecast. Good night. around, more breeze as well. Still

:07:30.:07:30.

dry. rest of the United Kingdom? English

:07:52.:07:59.

today on the satellite picture, a bit of fair weather cloud. The

:08:00.:08:03.

thicker, rain-bearing cloud is still kept well at bay. There seems to be

:08:04.:08:08.

some sort of force field keeping that thicker cloud away from the UK.

:08:09.:08:12.

That is provided by a block of high pressure and these blocks take some

:08:13.:08:18.

shifting. For the time being, the wetter weather

:08:19.:08:19.
