sunshine but the risk of a shower later this weekend. Thank you. That

for sending sewage out to sea. And all eyes to the skies as the

Red Arrows celebrate half The difference in price for goods

:00:27.:00:29.

and services in the Channel Islands compared to the UK is growing,

:00:30.:00:45.

according to a new report. While petrol and diesel remains

:00:46.:00:48.

cheaper at seven pence and twelve pence per litre, alcohol

:00:49.:00:51.

is more expensive by around fifty pence per pint of beer and twenty

:00:52.:00:57.

nine pence for a nip of whisky. Many food items are also higher,

:00:58.:01:01.

meat is sixteen percent more expensive and milk costs around

:01:02.:01:04.

eighteen pence more for a pint. But the biggest difference is

:01:05.:01:13.

in the cost of fruit and vegetables We are advised to eat five a day

:01:14.:01:15.

for a healthy lifestyle. But can we afford to,

:01:16.:01:20.

as eating fresh fruit and veg is more expensive

:01:21.:01:22.

in the Channel Islands than the UK? To be healthy you how to eat a lot

:01:23.:01:34.

of food but then on a pension, it is not always easy to afford it. I do

:01:35.:01:39.

find it quite expensive. Not just fruit and veg but all food. Every

:01:40.:01:44.

week I going it seems to go up all the time and it is a hard cost of

:01:45.:01:51.

living. Things are more expensive so you have just got to accept it,

:01:52.:01:53.

really. A price comparison survey revealed

:01:54.:01:55.

fruit costs 35 percent more in Jersey than the UK

:01:56.:01:57.

and vegetables are 44 percent more. Guernsey prices were slightly

:01:58.:02:00.

cheaper than Jersey Pauline bought this market stall

:02:01.:02:02.

a couple of weeks ago. She says Jersey is more

:02:03.:02:09.

expensive because of the extra In the UK they have got challenges

:02:10.:02:22.

but maybe not as much because the buying power is more so they have

:02:23.:02:27.

got more accessibility to produce where as we have got to get it

:02:28.:02:31.

shipped here. They will put the frayed charge on, they will put the

:02:32.:02:36.

oil tar John, there are a lot of things that we have to consider ``

:02:37.:02:38.

they will put the oil charge on. But even locally grown fruit

:02:39.:02:42.

and veg come at a cost. This farm shop has been

:02:43.:02:45.

in Catherine's family They sell local produce as much

:02:46.:02:47.

as they can, but say they can buy We could have watched cheaper from

:02:48.:03:02.

the way. There are a lot of large companies growing in the island now

:03:03.:03:06.

who will be exporting at a low cost to give the UK a cheaper cost.

:03:07.:03:08.

Of course we're also paying an additional five per cent

:03:09.:03:11.

on all our fresh produce in Jersey ` thanks to GST.

:03:12.:03:13.

In the survey every fruit and vegetable was cheaper in the UK

:03:14.:03:16.

` food for thought if you're trying to eat healthy.

:03:17.:03:23.

Jersey's Independent Care Inquiry has heard from a women who says

:03:24.:03:26.

Social Services didn't do enough to protect her from her abusive mother.

:03:27.:03:30.

Miss C, who has asked to remain anonymous,

:03:31.:03:33.

described how on one occasion she was put on a rack by her mother who

:03:34.:03:36.

then took a scouring brush to her leg and scrubbed until it bled.

:03:37.:03:41.

She said social workers would visit her flat, after reports of screaming

:03:42.:03:44.

and crying from neighbours, but were only interested in her mother.

:03:45.:03:50.

Unemployment in Jersey remains at a two year low.

:03:51.:03:52.

1,510 people were registered as actively looking for work in August.

:03:53.:03:59.

That's 310 fewer than at this time last year.

:04:00.:04:05.

Experts looking at where to position Guernsey's new

:04:06.:04:07.

sewage outfall pipe have pinpointed a potential location.

:04:08.:04:11.

It follows an extensive survey of the seabed off of the East coast,

:04:12.:04:15.

Today it was all about what was going on above Belle Greve Bay.

:04:16.:04:26.

But for the last few months it's been about what's happening below.

:04:27.:04:31.

With divers surveying the seabed as part of work to look at where a

:04:32.:04:34.

We are looking for an optimal route which makes it easy to lay the pipe

:04:35.:04:50.

and cover it once we've finished. Avoid taking out rock which is very

:04:51.:04:56.

difficult. We have able to generate 3`D pictures of the sea bed to try

:04:57.:05:00.

to help us identify routes and the deeper we go the better and more

:05:01.:05:07.

effective the outfall will perform once we get it in place.

:05:08.:05:08.

Costing around ?19 million the new outfall

:05:09.:05:10.

But the states decided it is a better one than

:05:11.:05:14.

And with the survey now complete the work can push ahead.

:05:15.:05:22.

This is one of the proposed routes that the outfall may be laid along.

:05:23.:05:29.

It is up to the back contract is to come up with a final decision. We

:05:30.:05:35.

did not find anything that is particularly own as far as our

:05:36.:05:37.

project is concerned so that is good news.

:05:38.:05:38.

Guernsey Water's on track for the new pipe to go in next summer.

:05:39.:05:41.

That is unless something unexpected pops up.

:05:42.:05:50.

You're watching the BBC in the Channel Islands.

:05:51.:05:52.

Later in Spotlight with Natalie and Simon:

:05:53.:05:55.

Double trouble for the teachers at a school welcoming

:05:56.:05:57.

The RAF red arrows thrilled the crowds around the

:05:58.:06:08.

Channel Islands today when they performed in both Guernsey

:06:09.:06:11.

The aerobatic team is celebrating its fiftieth

:06:12.:06:17.

And as Edward Sault reports the Channel Islands have a special

:06:18.:06:21.

Their motto is Eclat ` French for brilliance `

:06:22.:06:27.

and that brilliance was on show today as the RAF Red Arrows roared

:06:28.:06:30.

through the skies of the Channel Islands at 600 miles an hour.

:06:31.:06:40.

They have displayed more times in Jersey and the Channel Islands than

:06:41.:06:46.

any other place in the world throughout their entire history.

:06:47.:06:50.

They enjoy coming here and I know when defence cuts have been

:06:51.:06:53.

mentioned and they have had a number of displays reduced over the years

:06:54.:06:57.

they decide where they want to go and we are either number one or

:06:58.:06:59.

number two on that list. And that affinity for the

:07:00.:07:01.

Channel Islands goes right to Group Captain James Hunter grew up

:07:02.:07:03.

in Jersey and today he flew in the display over the island he calls

:07:04.:07:08.

home in the back seat of Red 1. It is a great privilege. The red

:07:09.:07:17.

arrows are part of the Central flying school which is the

:07:18.:07:19.

organisation that I am responsible for. To have the honour of the

:07:20.:07:22.

Central flying school which is the organisation that I am responsible

:07:23.:07:24.

for. Grab your not pleading that organisation and looking after the

:07:25.:07:27.

red roses a great privilege and of course to do that back here is extra

:07:28.:07:29.

special `` Red Arrows. And poignant too as this year the

:07:30.:07:34.

team celebrate their 50th display season and to celebrate a new tail

:07:35.:07:41.

fin unveiled earlier this year. And

:07:42.:07:44.

a new manouvre practiced repeatedly during training here in Cyprus and

:07:45.:07:46.

designed by one of the famous pilots who's bowing out after three years

:07:47.:07:49.

leading the world`famous team. Coming to the Channel Islands is one

:07:50.:08:02.

of the highlights of the year. We get such a warm reception here and

:08:03.:08:05.

everyone loves to see beating grabber we get such a warm reception

:08:06.:08:07.

here and everyone loves to see beating Puerto Rico watch the show

:08:08.:08:12.

and it sums up to me what the islanders think of the airshow.

:08:13.:08:15.

The RAF used to have many other display teams including this one `

:08:16.:08:18.

the Black Arrows ` but 50 years ago the decision was

:08:19.:08:23.

made to have just one and five decades on it seems that these

:08:24.:08:26.

Channel Islands favourites still have many more crowds to thrill.

:08:27.:08:40.

Some great shots there. We will have more on the air display later in the

:08:41.:08:48.

programme. It looks like cracking flying conditions there. What does

:08:49.:08:53.

the weather have in store? No change in the weather pattern. We may see a

:08:54.:09:00.

bit more in the way of cloud. Still dry. Easterly breeze. That really

:09:01.:09:05.

isn't the only thing to worry about. Patchy cloud and sunny spells

:09:06.:09:08.

tomorrow and still warmer temperatures. Back up to 90 degrees

:09:09.:09:16.

or possibly 20 degrees. On big picture we mentioned this area of

:09:17.:09:18.

low pressure. It will eventually move a little bit closer to us but

:09:19.:09:22.

it is a long way off at the moment. The threat of showers perhaps on

:09:23.:09:26.

Monday. A light shower tanning up perhaps in the afternoon but the

:09:27.:09:31.

low`pressure is slowly moving northwards and a little bit further

:09:32.:09:36.

eastwards. But it is slow. High pressure still well and truly in

:09:37.:09:42.

charge for the weekend ahead. The detail on that: Some cloud will

:09:43.:09:45.

arrive towards the end of the night but it is a lovely evening.

:09:46.:09:53.

Overnight averages dipping down to 13 degrees. Tomorrow morning there

:09:54.:09:55.

will be some cloud around for the first few hours of the day and

:09:56.:09:58.

perhaps around the middle of the morning this line of cloud will come

:09:59.:10:03.

through. It will break up quite readily and the sunshine will be off

:10:04.:10:06.

and on in the morning and then back out in the afternoon. Temperatures

:10:07.:10:14.

17 degrees or 90 degrees. Possibly even 20 degrees again. Coastal

:10:15.:10:20.

waters forecast: Fair with generally moderate or good this ability

:10:21.:10:31.

because of the haze. High water at 938 AM. Very little in the way of a

:10:32.:10:42.

wave at the moment. The forecast for the weekend is more cloud. I think

:10:43.:10:47.

the better of the two days will be Saturday with sunny spells and just

:10:48.:10:52.

a bit of patchy cloud around. Generally more cloud around on

:10:53.:10:55.

Sunday but it will not stop the temperatures. They want is still

:10:56.:10:59.

there. 21 degrees or possibly 22 degrees. I mentioned the possibility

:11:00.:11:05.

on Monday towards the end of the day be sure showers turning up. There is

:11:06.:11:09.

a lot of uncertainty about that and a more definite change to more

:11:10.:11:13.

settled conditions towards the end of next week. Have a good evening.

:11:14.:11:18.

Thanks Ray much. It looks like the sunny weather is set to continue.

:11:19.:11:22.

That's it from me, I'll be back at 8:00pm

:11:23.:11:24.

But for now I'll leave you with some of the highlights

:11:25.:11:28.

involved and it gives them inspiration for the future to see

:11:29.:12:21.

people like this here. Another Tour of Britain cycle race and another

:12:22.:12:23.

triumph for the Devon stage. You're watching Spotlight tonight

Weymouth So St John's in Sidmouth is also

:13:52.:15:23.

marking its centenary and visitors have come from across the Atlantic

:15:24.:15:26.

to join in the celebrations. Carole Madge has been

:15:27.:15:28.

finding out why. A century of learning on the coast

:15:29.:15:46.

in Devon. There were sports, the great outdoors and the

:15:47.:15:52.

companionship. And now 100 years on the hallowed halls and playing

:15:53.:15:56.

fields are still ringing with the sounds of youngsters. A beautiful

:15:57.:16:05.

stained`glass window. To celebrate the centenary the headteacher has a

:16:06.:16:11.

special visitor. It gives me goose bumps to think my mother worshipped

:16:12.:16:16.

in this room 100 years ago. Penny has travelled thousands of miles to

:16:17.:16:19.

visit the place where her mother was at school. It all began with some

:16:20.:16:24.

pamphlets tucked away in her mother's desk. I did not know she

:16:25.:16:28.

had them but I have read them and I found out things about her I did not

:16:29.:16:33.

know before such as, I knew that she had gone here to school, but what I

:16:34.:16:38.

did not know was that she was Belgian and her father was a career

:16:39.:16:41.

knew what Ash back he knew that war knew what Ash back he knew that war

:16:42.:16:46.

was coming so he sent his wife and family to England. He wanted them to

:16:47.:16:52.

be safe and they were and he survived the war. In fact, her

:16:53.:16:57.

mother was one of four refugees in mother was one of four refugees in

:16:58.:17:05.

need of an education, the school's very first pupils. My mother had

:17:06.:17:15.

these magazines. She left them in her desk and I found that after she

:17:16.:17:19.

died. I read through them looking for her but I saw you and you are

:17:20.:17:29.

all through there. Gosh! You won the tennis tournament and the badminton

:17:30.:17:32.

tournament, and you were quite a sports woman! I enjoyed it in those

:17:33.:17:37.

days! At the age of 99 this is a real old girl of the school. For

:17:38.:17:43.

Penny this meeting provides another link to her mother's passed and she

:17:44.:17:46.

says it was well worth travelling across the Atlantic for.

:17:47.:17:50.

A ?1 million auction of film industry memorabilia next

:17:51.:17:52.

month will include armour and weapons made by a man in Cornwall.

:17:53.:17:55.

Terry English has been supplying the silver screen for 50 years.

:17:56.:17:59.

Gladiator, Aliens, Harry Potter and Excalibur, just some of

:18:00.:18:03.

Spotlight's David George has been to a remarkable home in West Cornwall.

:18:04.:18:31.

The theme from the 1981 film Excalibur. In this workshop Terry

:18:32.:18:40.

made many suits of armour for the actors as well making extra costumes

:18:41.:18:44.

such as this breastplate for Helen Mirren. I said this would be much

:18:45.:18:48.

easier if I could draw this on your body with an eyebrow pencil and I

:18:49.:18:52.

was joking and she stripped off and said she would do it. We drew on the

:18:53.:18:55.

body with an eyebrow pencil and carefully measured everything and

:18:56.:18:59.

that was how it came about. Did it fit? It fitted perfectly. Yes. He

:19:00.:19:08.

has made armour and weapons for over 100 films including Harry Potter

:19:09.:19:15.

films and Aliens and Gladiator. What is it like dealing with those guys.

:19:16.:19:20.

Russell Crowe has a reputation for being grumpy. He is a really nice

:19:21.:19:25.

chap. This house is one of the most fascinating homes I have ever been

:19:26.:19:30.

in. Every room is stuffed full of boys toys and film memorabilia. This

:19:31.:19:37.

is from Excalibur. Just take a look at there. They are from Aliens and

:19:38.:19:42.

the man in the iron mask. Some of this collection will go into a

:19:43.:19:46.

massive auction of film memorabilia next month. The larger version of

:19:47.:19:51.

this will be sold in the auction next month. The only difference is

:19:52.:19:59.

that it is bigger and it has spikes. That is currently at an exhibition

:20:00.:20:04.

in London before the auction. Terry is 70 years old but has no thoughts

:20:05.:20:09.

of retiring. As well as film and hiring out his equipment he has sold

:20:10.:20:12.

armour to the Tower of London and he readily takes part in fairy

:20:13.:20:19.

festivals. He is off now to a big one in the Netherlands!

:20:20.:20:26.

They will turn a few heads driving in that! A remarkable man indeed.

:20:27.:20:33.

Teachers at one school in Devon can hardly believe their eyes after the

:20:34.:20:37.

school welcomed six sets of twins. It must be some kind of record. The

:20:38.:20:45.

12 new pupils have all started at the same school in Plymouth and we

:20:46.:20:48.

have been finding out how the teaching staff will cope with all of

:20:49.:20:49.

the confusion. Look closely, there is a dragon in

:20:50.:20:57.

the room and a tiger in this class. There is also Zachery and Finlay.

:20:58.:21:02.

You have guessed it, twins. There are six pairs of twins at this

:21:03.:21:07.

primary school starting their reception week. I have been in

:21:08.:21:12.

teaching for over 20 years under headteacher for ten years and I have

:21:13.:21:16.

never known anything like this. I have had a twins before in year

:21:17.:21:20.

groups but normally one or maybe two sets but to have six altogether is

:21:21.:21:25.

incredible. I have never known anything like it. Who would have

:21:26.:21:28.

thought that the two times table would be difficult for a table? Its

:21:29.:21:35.

policy is to suggest separating the twins into different classes. One

:21:36.:21:38.

set of parents were very keen for them to stay together so we said

:21:39.:21:42.

that was OK but generally speaking we like to keep them apart so they

:21:43.:21:46.

can grow as individuals. As twins they tend to stick together and form

:21:47.:21:50.

quite close unit together and sometimes that is at the exclusion

:21:51.:21:55.

of making other friendships. Not too much double trouble. Parents are

:21:56.:21:59.

pleased there are a dozen twins in the same year. I think they are all

:22:00.:22:07.

starting to realise that there are other twins so they are starting to

:22:08.:22:10.

recognise and socialise with them a little bit more which is very good

:22:11.:22:13.

as well. You are in different classes. How does it feels? Weird.

:22:14.:22:17.

Weird. What do you like best about school? Dinosaurs. We have fun with

:22:18.:22:27.

Lego. We asked for the school to separate them because they fight

:22:28.:22:32.

each other. They always fight each other and cause trouble! So far they

:22:33.:22:39.

are probably better. According to the multiple births foundation the

:22:40.:22:42.

number of twins has increased over the years, probably due to fertility

:22:43.:22:47.

treatment. Presently around one in 80 berths in the UK are naturally

:22:48.:22:52.

multiple compared to one in five after IVF treatment. Maybe the

:22:53.:22:56.

school had an idea they would have this many twins because already

:22:57.:22:57.

there is a game for them to play. He is doing well to keep them apart.

:22:58.:23:13.

Aren't they lovely! Imagine having to view!

:23:14.:23:18.

One is quite enough. It is time for the weather now. It seems cooler

:23:19.:23:23.

today. It is slightly, but that is the only difference.

:23:24.:23:25.

I have had a few enquiries today about when it will rain. I cannot

:23:26.:23:30.

see it happening at the minute. There will be a change next week and

:23:31.:23:33.

it is a question of how quickly that happens. I will give you in later in

:23:34.:23:37.

the broadcast about that. We have had a lovely day. More clout

:23:38.:23:42.

but just that bit cooler because of it. Tomorrow the sunshine will be

:23:43.:23:46.

back out. It is cloudy at times and Sunny spells with easterly wind

:23:47.:23:50.

continuing. They do not bring a lot in terms of wet weather so it

:23:51.:24:11.

area of low pressure to the west of area of low pressure to the west

:24:12.:24:14.

Spain and Portugal and we have the Spain and Portugal and we have the

:24:15.:24:15.

high over southern Scandinavia. We are getting easterly winds and that

:24:16.:24:18.

does not change very much over the next few days. This is the forecast

:24:19.:24:20.

for tomorrow and by Saturday we still have high pressure and by

:24:21.:24:23.

charge and the wind will remain from charge and the wind will remain from

:24:24.:24:27.

the East. We saw these clouds earlier today. There was a cover of

:24:28.:24:28.

cloud in Somerset and Dorset that was stubborn to move out of the way.

:24:29.:24:32.

We have had the best of the sunshine today. Patchy cloud across Devon and

Cornwall and decent spells of sunshine as well. A windy day

:24:36.:24:39.

yesterday for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly but today it has not

:24:40.:24:42.

been quite as strong. Overnight tonight missed is forming and patchy

:24:43.:24:46.

cloud returning. It is still drive and by the morning we wake up to

:24:47.:24:51.

some sunny spells. More clout in general in the sky compared to what

:24:52.:24:53.

we have seen in the last few days. We will see a bit more cloud

:24:54.:25:10.

floating by tomorrow. The best of the sunshine will be on the north

:25:11.:25:14.

coast of Cornwall and the northern parts of Devon. Let us go to the

:25:15.:25:18.

north coast of Cornwall today where we had some beautiful weather. I

:25:19.:25:22.

cameraman got a glimpse of the sand and also of the surf. There is very

:25:23.:25:32.

surfers have been a bit disappointed surfers have been a

:25:33.:25:32.

in the past few days because their in the past few days because their

:25:33.:25:40.

eyes hardly a wave at all. It is hard to imagine we are

:25:41.:25:44.

actually still in September. Temperatures tomorrow will be very

:25:45.:25:48.

similar to today. After the cloudy start we will brighten up in the

:25:49.:25:53.

sunshine will work through and we will get back up to 19 degrees. The

:25:54.:25:56.

wind will be from the east and strongest along the south coast of

:25:57.:26:00.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. This is the forecast for the Isles

:26:01.:26:03.

of Scilly tomorrow. Some sunny spells and fine and right with

:26:04.:26:07.

sunshine. Becky Morgan from the East South waste just making it feel cool

:26:08.:26:10.

if you are right on the coast. There are our times of high water.

:26:11.:26:19.

I do not know why I bother to show the surfing forecast because there

:26:20.:26:27.

is not a great deal of surf! That continues over the next couple of

:26:28.:26:28.

days. I suggested I would give you a hint

:26:29.:26:42.

of what happens next week so let us weep ashlar leap forward and go

:26:43.:26:46.

right ahead to Tuesday next week. Look. It is the same area of low

:26:47.:26:50.

pressure and effectively high pressure over Scandinavia but it is

:26:51.:26:54.

much weaker. This area of low pressure is just extending a little

:26:55.:26:58.

bit towards southern Britain so perhaps by the middle of next week

:26:59.:27:01.

we could start to see a few showers but until then it is fine and dry

:27:02.:27:06.

and again we will see some sunny spells but more cloud as we head

:27:07.:27:09.

into the weekend. The better of the two days of the weekend will be

:27:10.:27:12.

Saturday with sunshine here and patchy cloud floating by. Sunday

:27:13.:27:17.

morn `` Sunday and Monday are still warm with the same easterly winds

:27:18.:27:20.

but a lot of cloud around so perhaps not quite as sunny as it has been.

:27:21.:27:29.

That is all from me. Enjoy the evening.

:27:30.:27:33.

Thank you. The weather has been consistently good so we will have

:27:34.:27:37.

that. There is more in the News at ten we are back tomorrow at 6:30pm.

:27:38.:27:40.

Have a lovely. Goodbye.
