children. That's all from the BBC News. We can now join the ndws teams | :00:00. | :00:00.
where you are. Concerns are raised over | :00:00. | :00:07.
the possible Islamification of a primary school where four governors | :00:08. | :00:10.
have resigned over what thex The Department for Education says it | :00:11. | :00:13.
will investigate any allegations Also tonight, an inquest begins | :00:14. | :00:25.
into the death of a mother whose shooting during a police rahd | :00:26. | :00:29.
sparked the 1985 Brixton riots. Revealed, | :00:30. | :00:34.
the proposal to build a ?600 million Rock legends the Who announce | :00:35. | :00:36.
a 50th anniversary tour. Good evening | :00:37. | :00:51.
and welcome to the programmd. First tonight concerns over possible | :00:52. | :01:09.
religious extremism at a school BBC London has learned that the | :01:10. | :01:11.
council has information concerning the possible Islamification of | :01:12. | :01:15.
Kobi Nazrul Primary school. A number of governors have resigned | :01:16. | :01:18.
over what they describe The Department for Education | :01:19. | :01:20.
has told us it will investigate It follows the so`called | :01:21. | :01:24.
Trojan Horse plot in Birmingham in which a number of schools were | :01:25. | :01:27.
the target of an alleged takeover David Cameron once chose Kobi Nazrul | :01:28. | :01:31.
as the backdrop to deliver plans for Tower Hamlets council is already | :01:32. | :01:49.
trying to remove the entire governing body over | :01:50. | :01:53.
an alarming slip in standards. Now BBC London understands | :01:54. | :01:56.
information has being received raising concerns over Islamhc | :01:57. | :01:58.
extremists at the school. After the events in Birmingham, | :01:59. | :02:03.
we asked every single London council to tell us of any tip`offs they ve | :02:04. | :02:06.
received about any of their schools. We asked for any details | :02:07. | :02:09.
of any alleged attempt by Islamic extremists to infiltrate anx school | :02:10. | :02:12.
or try and influence Tower Hamlets confirmed it was | :02:13. | :02:15.
in possession of relevant information, a document, | :02:16. | :02:21.
but so far has refused to show it But we understand the inforlation | :02:22. | :02:24.
does indeed relate to Kobi Nazrul. Four of the 15 governors | :02:25. | :02:31.
of the school have now resigned This man is one of them | :02:32. | :02:34.
and says he was not invited to meetings and was alarmed | :02:35. | :02:37.
at the amount of long`serving staff Some of the staff were | :02:38. | :02:40.
at the school for over a decade And | :02:41. | :02:44.
for them to suddenly walk away from Obviously I don't know what happened | :02:45. | :02:47.
in terms of the management from the top layer but therd's no | :02:48. | :02:51.
other conclusion you could reach. There must have been | :02:52. | :02:55.
a reason why they resigned. It must be what happened | :02:56. | :02:57.
at the school and the way the school Results have gone from 82% of pupils | :02:58. | :03:00.
gaining good sats to 40%, the worst Parents also have concerns | :03:01. | :03:06.
at the secrecy. We questioned the governors | :03:07. | :03:14.
and we asked them the reasons why But to this day we haven't had | :03:15. | :03:17.
a valid answer basically. Behind our backs, they tried to | :03:18. | :03:25.
put the school into an acaddmy. There was no consultation | :03:26. | :03:30.
with parents. How do I know | :03:31. | :03:34.
about my grandchildren? None of the parents we spokd to have | :03:35. | :03:45.
seen any overt extremism but we now know one of the governors | :03:46. | :03:53.
is a member of an Islamist group. Successive prime ministers have | :03:54. | :03:58.
considered banning the group. It has in the past infiltrated | :03:59. | :04:02.
and recruited at universitids and remains under constant review | :04:03. | :04:05.
by the Home Office. A local MP says the governmdnt | :04:06. | :04:09.
should have acted sooner. The government and the Secrdtary | :04:10. | :04:15.
of State has sat on its hands and, in the meantime, children are | :04:16. | :04:18.
suffering, parents are suffdring, parent governors have raised alarm | :04:19. | :04:20.
bells that in the governing board they've been in a minority so | :04:21. | :04:24.
this school needs action quhckly. The Department for Education told us | :04:25. | :04:30.
if they find evidence of extremism They are also awaiting the result | :04:31. | :04:33.
of an emergency OFSTED inspdction. That may shed light | :04:34. | :04:39.
on what's really happening inside because, at the moment, | :04:40. | :04:42.
the wider community is clearly not To clarify, these are concerns | :04:43. | :04:44.
at the moment about governance not necessarily about what's behng | :04:45. | :04:59.
taught in the school? That's right. Tower Hamlets are | :05:00. | :05:05.
concern about the school from way back in 2012 when the headm`ster was | :05:06. | :05:08.
hired after the council 's wishes. They objected strongly. The result | :05:09. | :05:13.
of dropped dramatically and other tried to intervene and calldd off `` | :05:14. | :05:18.
Ofsted in. What to make of this letter is lacking a possibld | :05:19. | :05:21.
concerns about extremism? It's hard to tell, really. Yes, this lan seems | :05:22. | :05:26.
to be a member of this extrdmist group. He did not deny it to us on | :05:27. | :05:30.
the phone today, but should it matter in the day`to`day running of | :05:31. | :05:34.
the school? We don't know if it does any effect at all full stop | :05:35. | :05:36.
certainly nothing in our investigation so far suggests only | :05:37. | :05:41.
kind of overhead attempt at this. This culture of secrecy does not | :05:42. | :05:45.
helpful for many parents we spoke to said they have been shot out and | :05:46. | :05:47.
then there is a clandestine attempt by the governors to turn thd school | :05:48. | :05:50.
into an academy out of council control with freedom of what they | :05:51. | :05:56.
teach. It doesn't really help. Poor governance and results is the real | :05:57. | :06:02.
key here. The Ofsted findings will be very interesting. Certainly, I | :06:03. | :06:05.
would be surprised given evdrything I've seen of that was not some kind | :06:06. | :06:08.
of intervention by the government very soon. | :06:09. | :06:28.
Why transport bosses say thd Tour de France will be good for London. | :06:29. | :06:36.
I will have the forecast for you from SWR 19. | :06:37. | :06:43.
An inquest into the death of a mother whose shooting sparked | :06:44. | :06:46.
Cherry Groce was shot by armed officers | :06:47. | :06:49.
during a police raid 29 years ago and died of her injuries in 201 . | :06:50. | :06:52.
Her son told the inquest how he was left confused, shocked | :06:53. | :06:55.
Our Home Affairs Corresponddnt, Guy Smith reports. | :06:56. | :07:00.
He was only 11`years`old when he saw his mother lying | :07:01. | :07:03.
on the floor wounded at the family home in Brixton. | :07:04. | :07:06.
She had been shot by an armed police officer. | :07:07. | :07:09.
Today he told a jury he was screaming and shouting repe`tedly, | :07:10. | :07:13.
He said he then heard her s`ying ?I can't feel my legs, I can't breathe, | :07:14. | :07:20.
He said he ?became hysteric`l when the police officer pointed a | :07:21. | :07:25.
Cherry Groce was left paralxsed and confined to a wheelchair. | :07:26. | :07:31.
She died from her injuries hn 2 11, 26 years after the shooting. | :07:32. | :07:37.
A shooting that provoked a riot in Brixton and raised questhons | :07:38. | :07:41.
at the time about policing the black colmunity | :07:42. | :07:44.
Police had been looking for her son, Michael Groce, | :07:45. | :07:50.
He was suspected of carrying out an armed robbery in Hertfordshire. | :07:51. | :07:56.
On a Thursday in September 0985 at an address in London, he pointed | :07:57. | :08:00.
a shotgun at a Hertfordshird police officer and then disappeared. | :08:01. | :08:05.
The next day, armed officers from The Met carried | :08:06. | :08:07.
It wasn't until early the ndxt morning that they targeted the | :08:08. | :08:14.
The jury heard that there wdre serious deficiencies in how | :08:15. | :08:20.
There was a lack of information about the layout of propertx | :08:21. | :08:25.
An independent review by West Yorkshire Police found grave | :08:26. | :08:30.
risks were created for both the public and the police. | :08:31. | :08:35.
It has taken the family of Cherry Groce | :08:36. | :08:41.
the past three years since her death to secure legal aid so that they can | :08:42. | :08:45.
Tomorrow, the jury is due to hear from the officer who shot hdr. | :08:46. | :08:58.
Four men have been arrested in connection with the rape | :08:59. | :09:01.
The girl was attacked by a group of men in the woods near | :09:02. | :09:05.
A 19`year`old and a 20`year`old remain in custody | :09:06. | :09:11.
A teenager who was stabbed to death as he walked home | :09:12. | :09:13.
from a friend's house in Harlesden over the weekend has been n`med | :09:14. | :09:16.
The 19`year`old was chased by two men wearing black hooded tops | :09:17. | :09:21.
He was taken to hospital but died hours later. | :09:22. | :09:26.
An eight day strike by power workers on London Underground will go ahead | :09:27. | :09:30.
after talks to resolve a row over pensions failed. | :09:31. | :09:33.
Members of the RMT union and Unite are due to walk out | :09:34. | :09:39.
Transport bosses say it'll have no impact on Tube services. | :09:40. | :09:43.
But unions warn there will be disruption. | :09:44. | :09:50.
Eric Pickles has accused in East London council of holding up an | :09:51. | :09:55.
investigation into how the borough spends taxpayers money. He says | :09:56. | :09:59.
Tower Hamlets has been slow in providing key information about its | :10:00. | :10:02.
administration. The council says it wants the investigation finhshed as | :10:03. | :10:12.
quickly as possible. What started as a BBC investigation into spdnding | :10:13. | :10:14.
Tower Hamlets quickly becamd an investigation ordered by thd | :10:15. | :10:18.
government. In April, it sent a team of accountants from | :10:19. | :10:20.
PricewaterhouseCoopers into the council to look at how the borough | :10:21. | :10:23.
had been spending its money. They were due to report back to | :10:24. | :10:27.
government today. Instead, there was this announcement by the man who | :10:28. | :10:31.
ordered that investigation. The council has considerably delayed the | :10:32. | :10:37.
investigation by delaying the provision of key information or not | :10:38. | :10:41.
providing it at all. This is not acceptable and I am consequdntly | :10:42. | :10:45.
extending the period for thdm to report and the costs will bd met by | :10:46. | :10:49.
the council. Whether the cotncil likes it or not, this investigation | :10:50. | :10:53.
will be thorough and comprehensive. In letters of the government, the | :10:54. | :10:56.
ordered it was claimed their investigation was held up the | :10:57. | :10:58.
documents they had requested had been delivered late to them, not | :10:59. | :11:02.
delivered at all. In a lettdr sent to the council today, the government | :11:03. | :11:05.
says Tower Hamlets will be footing the bill for the process. It will | :11:06. | :11:10.
cost around ?1 million. We don't want this to descend into a slanging | :11:11. | :11:14.
match. It is important for public confidence we get to the bottom of | :11:15. | :11:17.
these allegations and the sooner the better. I worry about the expense of | :11:18. | :11:23.
all this but clearly there hs still a cloud hanging over Tower Hamlets | :11:24. | :11:27.
politics. And I think public confidence requires us to gdt a move | :11:28. | :11:32.
on, get to the bottom of it, leave no stone unturned, and restore that | :11:33. | :11:36.
confidence. The council is considering a judicial revidw of the | :11:37. | :11:39.
governments decision to award an investigation. It expected the Mayor | :11:40. | :11:42.
will make a decision on that tomorrow. Today it said: | :11:43. | :11:58.
Tomorrow the focus will switch from spending two elections with a from | :11:59. | :12:05.
the electoral commission looking the count at Tower Hamlets in M`y, which | :12:06. | :12:08.
ended up taking five days to complete. It is expected to be | :12:09. | :12:12.
highly critical of the borotgh s planning for the polls. Offhcers | :12:13. | :12:20.
investigating an illegal rave in Croydon have released six ndw images | :12:21. | :12:23.
of people they would like to speak to. The men are not connectdd to the | :12:24. | :12:26.
death which occurred after the raid at a disused sorting office but they | :12:27. | :12:30.
could help police with other lines of enquiry regarding violence and | :12:31. | :12:34.
drugs. So far, 16 people have been arrested in connection with the | :12:35. | :12:38.
event. Thousands of passengdrs are still waiting to get the luggage | :12:39. | :12:42.
back after an IT failure at terminal five. Heath Row bosses say the | :12:43. | :12:46.
problem has now been fixed. At Gatwick, passengers suffered long | :12:47. | :12:48.
delays over the weekend which the airport blamed on staff shortages at | :12:49. | :12:55.
the handling company. A company that has traded 20,000 tonne towdr of | :12:56. | :12:59.
waste just a few yards from homes in Orpington has had its application to | :13:00. | :13:01.
bring more rubbish to the shte blocked by the High Court. The | :13:02. | :13:06.
company, which collect wastd from across the south`east, has barely | :13:07. | :13:10.
been ordered to remove all flammable material from the site. In dxactly | :13:11. | :13:15.
one week, the largest annual sporting event in the world comes to | :13:16. | :13:20.
London. Organisers are expecting around 1 million spectators to | :13:21. | :13:24.
welcome the cyclists. It is cost Transport for London ?6 million to | :13:25. | :13:29.
get it. So is it worth it? Where in the capital can you see it? | :13:30. | :13:36.
While Yorkshire has been gohng Tour de France crazy, | :13:37. | :13:38.
in the capital preparations here have been more low`key. | :13:39. | :13:40.
So far, most of the focus h`s been on Yorkshire and the north | :13:41. | :13:46.
And the Tour is a commercial organisation and so cities `nd towns | :13:47. | :13:50.
along the route have to pay for the privilege to hold the Tour. | :13:51. | :13:54.
Last time the Tour was here was in 2007, | :13:55. | :14:01.
and an official survey afterwards showed that nearly half of those who | :14:02. | :14:04.
Transport for London has pahd ?6 million to host this Tour. | :14:05. | :14:13.
All the cycling events we h`ve, there are people who watch ht | :14:14. | :14:16.
They think, "I can try this cycling as well " | :14:17. | :14:21.
Maybe not as fast as some of the elite riders, | :14:22. | :14:24.
When we had the Tour de France in 2007, we had an increase in cycling. | :14:25. | :14:29.
Cycling is now part of our mainstream transport. | :14:30. | :14:33.
I think that after the Tour de France, | :14:34. | :14:35.
Stage Three of the Tour starts in Cambridge and makes its way | :14:36. | :14:41.
It will finish on the Mall `t about 4pm on Monday. | :14:42. | :14:46.
While there has been critichsm of the number | :14:47. | :14:49.
of events being held in London, City Hall says the tour is different | :14:50. | :14:53.
The Government has calculatdd it's worth 100 million right | :14:54. | :14:56.
About a third of that will be in London, if not a bit mord. | :14:57. | :15:02.
There will certainly be a bdnefit for the hotels and tourism hndustry. | :15:03. | :15:05.
But the real advantage is the pictures | :15:06. | :15:07.
People will say to themselvds, "I looked at that at the Olxmpics, | :15:08. | :15:14.
it looked interesting, I'm seeing it again now, | :15:15. | :15:16.
The Tour will cause disrupthon on many roads and motorists have | :15:17. | :15:22.
been warned they will have to move their cars from the main rottes | :15:23. | :15:25.
Nonetheless, the authorities believe a mhllion | :15:26. | :15:27.
A new bridge connecting Thalesmead Tibetan is being headed by the | :15:28. | :15:51.
London chamber of commerce, who claim it would bring huge bdnefits | :15:52. | :15:56.
to the area. Let's find out more from Victoria in east London. Bring | :15:57. | :16:02.
us up to date. I'm standing just down the road next | :16:03. | :16:08.
to the river from gallows rdach and uninterrupted stretch of thd | :16:09. | :16:11.
Thames, rather attractive at this time of the evening. But a lot of | :16:12. | :16:15.
people think this bit is rather wasted and that there should be a | :16:16. | :16:19.
new crossing over the Thames. This has been discussed for around 3 | :16:20. | :16:23.
years. The nearest bridge crossing to hear is actually at Tower | :16:24. | :16:32.
Bridge. They are saying that for a growing city, for a populathon that | :16:33. | :16:35.
is moving east across London, there needs to be a crossing and the time | :16:36. | :16:39.
is now. This is being driven by the London chamber of commerce, who have | :16:40. | :16:43.
released these architectural plans. They say if this bridge werd to get | :16:44. | :16:48.
the go`ahead, it would create around ?55 million economic benefits every | :16:49. | :16:52.
single year. It would lead to around 18,000 more jobs, as this area was | :16:53. | :16:57.
better connected. These plans have been released but they are just | :16:58. | :17:12.
plans at the moment. But already we've heard people not parthcularly | :17:13. | :17:14.
pleased at this idea, not ldast the Green Party, who say another bridge | :17:15. | :17:17.
and more traffic would just bring more pollution and that's the wrong | :17:18. | :17:19.
way forward for London. Will it get the go`ahead? | :17:20. | :17:23.
If recent history is anything to go by, it's not going to get the | :17:24. | :17:26.
go`ahead in the near future. In 2007, there was a judicial review | :17:27. | :17:31.
into the last plans for a bridge here. That got rejected bec`use | :17:32. | :17:37.
there were around 4500 objections to the plans. Supporters of thd latest | :17:38. | :17:40.
campaign say times have changed we've seen the whole area around | :17:41. | :17:44.
East London change, particularly since the Olympic Games. New | :17:45. | :17:48.
buildings springing up everxwhere, new business, new foreign money | :17:49. | :17:52.
coming into the area. If thd area is to continue to grow, there has to be | :17:53. | :17:57.
this crossing. They say that local people will now support this. In | :17:58. | :18:01.
2008, Boris Johnson also rejected these plans, took away around ? 00 | :18:02. | :18:05.
million of funding, so I thhnk it's fair to say there isn't going to be | :18:06. | :18:08.
an agreement tomorrow, and probably not in the near future. Towdr | :18:09. | :18:18.
Bridge, one of the most famous bridges in the world, is celebrating | :18:19. | :18:24.
its 120th anniversary. It w`s opened in 1894, after eight years of | :18:25. | :18:27.
construction, built as a response to the growth of East London and | :18:28. | :18:30.
increasing demand to cross the river. The bridge was built at a | :18:31. | :18:32.
cost of just over ?1 million. Roger Daltrey is calling it "the | :18:33. | :18:37.
beginning of the long goodbxe". Rock veterans The Who have announced a | :18:38. | :18:40.
series of 50th anniversary shows. The tour, which starts in November, | :18:41. | :18:43.
will end at the O2 Arena in Greenwich in December. With more | :18:44. | :18:46.

their 50th anniversary tour. But this exciting news | :19:04. | :19:05.
for fans is bittersweet, as it marks the fact that these ageing rockers | :19:06. | :19:08.
plan to wind things down a little. I don't think we are | :19:09. | :19:11.
going to stop playing. We've always been available | :19:12. | :19:14.
for charity shows and events, one`offs, but the touring shde | :19:15. | :19:16.
of it is going to have to come to I should say that not all of | :19:17. | :19:20.
The Who's history has been pleasant It is great just to have thhs | :19:21. | :19:37.
partnership with Roger, we share The Who and what's good and bad | :19:38. | :19:45.
about it but today it's all good. It was here in May 1969 that The Who | :19:46. | :19:49.
premiered Pete Townshend's rock opera, Tommy, so it seems only | :19:50. | :19:53.
fitting that the band should return to this West End venue to announce | :19:54. | :19:56.
their long goodbye. Tommy was called pretentious | :19:57. | :20:01.
by journalists with no imaghnation. But in actual fact we were | :20:02. | :20:04.
encouraged to be pretentious. Pete Townsend probably is working | :20:05. | :20:17.
for ever on material, it wotld seem. Equally, Roger, he loves totring, | :20:18. | :20:27.
singing and playing. I think there's plenty more | :20:28. | :20:30.
to come from both of them. Both have confirmed plans to record | :20:31. | :20:37.
so it's certainly not all over yet. The sun has been in and out of the | :20:38. | :21:08.
clouds today. It is one for the vegetation, the grass is certainly | :21:09. | :21:11.
going to be green after the showers we've had here. They've popped up | :21:12. | :21:16.
across the rest of London and the Home Counties here and therd. Still | :21:17. | :21:20.
spitting at it this evening. There's a terrific shower over the | :21:21. | :21:24.
southeastern part of the M24 that's just gone through. Let's take a look | :21:25. | :21:29.
at the picture for this evening Some showers very heavy, thdy are | :21:30. | :21:32.
going to be tailing off as we go through the night. Come abott ten | :21:33. | :21:36.
p.m., we should have seen the back of them and most of the dry weather | :21:37. | :21:40.
will come through tonight. Ht will also be clear. Temperatures below | :21:41. | :21:45.
last night, they got into shngle figures in a few places, thdy will | :21:46. | :21:49.
probably be at about 11 degrees in London suburbs. Some shallow mist or | :21:50. | :21:56.
fog patches early tomorrow lorning, but they will burn away quickly and | :21:57. | :22:01.
won't cause a problem. Tomorrow is going to be quite a contrast. There | :22:02. | :22:06.
will be plenty of sunshine. We will have the sunshine continuing. That | :22:07. | :22:12.
is into the afternoon as well very miniscule chance of a shower through | :22:13. | :22:16.
the day tomorrow, but mostlx it s going to be dry and lots of sunshine | :22:17. | :22:21.
to enjoy. The winds won't bd too strong either and temperatures will | :22:22. | :22:25.
be up to around 22 Celsius, very pleasant indeed. Through thd middle | :22:26. | :22:30.
part of this week into Wedndsday, high pressure prevails, there will | :22:31. | :22:34.
be plenty of sunshine, largdly dry conditions once again. It's going to | :22:35. | :22:42.
be a tiny bit warmer day by day On the outlook for Wimbledon, this is | :22:43. | :22:46.
just an example. It will be very similar across London and the Home | :22:47. | :22:50.
Counties elsewhere. We will have temperatures nearer the mid`20s on | :22:51. | :22:56.
Thursday. We will cling on to that fine weather for Friday as well | :22:57. | :23:00.
before it clouds over overnhght Saturday is looking like a real | :23:01. | :23:03.
disappointment, but we don't have to worry about that yet becausd there's | :23:04. | :23:05.
sunshine to enjoy tomorrow. Now a reminder | :23:06. | :23:11.
of the day's headlines. The veteran entertainer Rolf Harris | :23:12. | :23:12.
has been found guilty of 12 charges of indecent assault | :23:13. | :23:15.
against women and young girls. The offences were committed | :23:16. | :23:17.
between 1968 and 1986. The former editor of the News | :23:18. | :23:21.
of the World, Andy Coulson, and the paper's former Royal editor, Clive | :23:22. | :23:24.
Goodman, are to face a retrhal. A jury convicted Coulson | :23:25. | :23:27.
of phone hacking last week, but was unable to reach verdicts on charges | :23:28. | :23:31.
that they paid police officdrs to Every employee in Britain | :23:32. | :23:34.

their request to work flexibly to be considered "in a reasonable manner" | :23:40. | :23:42.

Ten O'Clock News. From all the team here, thanks for | :24:06. | :24:08.
watching and enjoy your evening If you were there, | :24:09. | :24:32.
you'll all get done for murder We don't have to prove | :24:33. | :24:34.
who used a knife any more. He's only gone and stabbed someone, | :24:35. | :24:36.
hasn't he? If you were there, | :24:37. | :24:40.
you'll all get done for murder I thought | :24:41. | :24:44.
they were going for a pizza! I'm pleading guilty to nothing, Mum. | :24:45. | :24:48.
