Good evening and welcome. The first of the Government's

flagship Technical College hn London is closing its doors just two years

after it opened. Hackney Unhversity Technical College is near old street

roundabout, also known as shllion roundabout, the hub for Intdrnet

businesses. Due to a lack of applicants governors have ddcided to

close it. This is what the Government would like the ftture of

education to look like. This University Technical Collegd was

opened in Hertfordshire by Lichael Gove last week. This week, the UTC

in Hackney made the difficult decision to close after it only

managed to attract 29 students out of a target of 75 for year 00. It

was a recruitment drive that the principal concedes would be

difficult. Many students, understandably, families and

students choose to stay put at the end of year nine and continte their

education in what are good `nd outstanding schools in the local're

yand and not make `` local `rea and not to make a change. Do yot mean

the system is structurely flawed? That it would be a difficult task to

get the students here in thd first place? I am not saying it is flawed.

It is encouraging young people to make a choice which is diffdrent.

Those who have been positivd about their experience here. Studdnts like

this, who will now have to go elsewhere to do his A levels. This

is our control centre and Andy is checking out the equipment there.

Despite the fact his course is closing, he still has every faith in

the concept. I believe that it is the future of education bec`use they

give us the skills and the communication skills we need for

employers. We learn how to network, which I would not get in a normal

school. Down the road in thd technology quarter, tech city, these

employers. We learn how to network, which I would are the creathves who

support the Technical College. The links they forge with peopld like

ourselves are really quite progressive, I think and thdy allow

the kids to develop sort of skills in the real world that norm`lly they

wouldn't do in the classrool. For some, specialising in technology at

the age of 14 is too late. @ctually we need to look further down the

chain, all the way back to primary school. Getting children thhnking, I

don't want to be a doctor, ` dentist, I want to have a c`reer in

tech. In the mean time jobs in the technology sector are proving ill lu

sieve for London `` proving illusive for London students. What they need

to do is convince young people that this is an exciting industrx they

can enter and start their own companies. It seems with thd lack of

applicants with this collegd it is not happening. This boy is confident

he's a coder in the making. The question is, how many others will be

able to follow him? 150 kilos of cocaine has bedn

Four men have been arrested in Lambeth and Kent. The consignment

arrived in Dover and was delivered by lorry to a trading estatd in

Kent. An inquiry into the economic case for the high speed rail link is

to be held by a House of Lords committee. It says it wants to find

out who the winners and losdrs will be from the ?50 billion project and

if London will gain more from HS2 than other areas around the country.

Could the mayor's vision for an airport in the Thames Estuary have

reached a cul`de`sac? Four independent reports appoint an

airport commission have raised concerns over the cost, the

environmental impact and thd implications for transport links. If

an entirely new airport is to be built, it will be built herd in the

Thames Estuary. The mayor's vision for a four runway hub is not on the

short list and is further from becoming reality after a succession

of reports from the Airports Commission have highlighted the

potential costs involved. It says airports and passengers belheve it

would of carry significantlx more risk than opportunity.

It said removing wildlife would be ?2 billion. ?21 billion would have

to be used to compensate businesses and rail links would run up to 27

billion. Tonight the mayor's aviation adviser said the commission

was legally and morally oblhged to consider their case. There hs a risk

stepping out of your front door There is risk in HS2, in Crossrail.

Financial risk in all these projects. The Government have

approached them and said thdy are risks we will take because we can

mitigate and manage the risks. The benefits are large enough to justify

that. That, I think, is the conclusion that the Airports

Commission will reach. Therd are those who live nearby who stpport

his view. ?2 billion in the bigger picture when it is ?50 billhon

investment doesn't matter. Ht's only money. It is an investment. Speaking

on this sun's politic's show, the local MP for Isleworth said

residents would not support the idea idea. The West Londoners ard not for

his proposal, because they don't want Heathrow expanded. Thex don't

want to get rid of Heathrow. The decision on whether to incltde a new

hub airport will be taken in September. A final recommendation on

which airport should be built or extended, not until after the next
