That's it for now. I'm back with more news at 9.20pm. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Now, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Goodbye. Welcome to BBC London News, | :00:00. | :00:15.
I'm Alice Bhandhukravi. A charity which helps London's poor | :00:16. | :00:25.
has criticised cuts to local welfare, which come in next spring. | :00:26. | :00:27.
It's the first time the Cripplegate Foundation has spoken | :00:28. | :00:29.
out against the Government in its 500 years of work. | :00:30. | :00:33.
The Government is to end a local welfare grant worth ?27 million. | :00:34. | :00:34.
Nicola Ford reports. John is disabled and cared for by | :00:35. | :00:47.
his son. He lives off a state pension and a disability payment. | :00:48. | :00:51.
The council were so concerned about his living arrangements they gave | :00:52. | :00:55.
him nearly ?2,000. I bought a fridge freezer, because my fridge broke | :00:56. | :01:00.
down. I bought a brand new electric cooker. Councils in London received | :01:01. | :01:04.
?27 million from the Government to direct to people most in need. From | :01:05. | :01:08.
next year, this particular funding is due to end. The Government says | :01:09. | :01:12.
when the funding stops, councils can use money from their existing | :01:13. | :01:17.
budgets to help people like John. At a time when local government budgets | :01:18. | :01:20.
are being squeezed, charities and councillors are concerned as to | :01:21. | :01:25.
where that money might come from. People have to fund libraries, to | :01:26. | :01:30.
centre centres. It's not clear how individual councils will cope with | :01:31. | :01:33.
this loss. The Government defends the change by saying it's for local | :01:34. | :01:37.
councils to decide how they spend their budgets. And provide support | :01:38. | :01:42.
to those in the community who face financial difficulties. The | :01:43. | :01:45.
Cripplegate Foundation is charity which helped poor Londoners for | :01:46. | :01:50.
nearly 500 years. They have never spoken out against the Government. | :01:51. | :01:55.
Until now. We are so alarmed on the effect it will have on our most | :01:56. | :02:00.
vulnerable residents in Islington we brought together other organisations | :02:01. | :02:05.
and set up Keep The Safety Net. We believe this is what it is. | :02:06. | :02:08.
Cripplegate Foundation is urging the Government to speak to them, to | :02:09. | :02:11.
London councils and voluntary groups about the cuts to funding, to find a | :02:12. | :02:16.
way in which they can continue to provide Londoners with a basic | :02:17. | :02:21.
standard of living. Nicola Ford BBC London News. | :02:22. | :02:27.
Five men have been arrested after a woman and her baby were hit | :02:28. | :02:32.
by a car which mounted a pavement in Finsbury Park. | :02:33. | :02:34.
It happened yesterday evening. Both are said to have serious, | :02:35. | :02:35.
but not life-threatening injuries. The Government has approved | :02:36. | :02:53.
Tottenham's plans to build a new 58,000 seater stadium. The club says | :02:54. | :02:58.
it hopes to start playing there in 2017. It will be built next to the | :02:59. | :03:03.
existing ground at white hard lane. There has been some local opposition | :03:04. | :03:05.
to the plans. Business leaders say a Grand Prix | :03:06. | :03:13.
in the capital would be a huge boost to London. | :03:14. | :03:16.
Hopes of F1 coming here have been raised after | :03:17. | :03:18.
the Government made it easier for councils to stage motoring events. | :03:19. | :03:21.
But there are still doubts over the cost of it. | :03:22. | :03:23.
Nick Beake reports. Formula One cars tearing through | :03:24. | :03:25.
the City of London. This is how the Lotus team imagines | :03:26. | :03:28.
a Grand Prix in the capital. It's always been a distant dream, | :03:29. | :03:31.
but has now come one step closer with David Cameron giving new powers | :03:32. | :03:34.
to local authorities to stage big motor races. | :03:35. | :03:37.
A Grand Prix in London would be a fantastic opportunity to market | :03:38. | :03:39.
London as a global city. It will also be fantastic revenue | :03:40. | :03:42.
generator for the economy and also for our tourism sector. | :03:43. | :03:44.
Remember this? Thousands packed Regent Street | :03:45. | :03:46.
a decade ago for a glimpse of what F1 here could look like. | :03:47. | :03:48.
of what F1 here could look like A London Grand Prix would be great | :03:49. | :03:51.
for the sport and also for London, I think. | :03:52. | :03:53.
Today, on Regent Street, there is still enthusiasm for the idea. | :03:54. | :03:55.
Well, Monaco always looks so spectacular. | :03:56. | :03:58.
I'm sure we could do something equally as spectacular as that. | :03:59. | :04:00.
I would love that. I mean, | :04:01. | :04:02.
it would make it really accessible. Mayor Boris Johnson has also | :04:03. | :04:05.
backed the idea of F1 cars racing through London's streets. | :04:06. | :04:07.
He says the capital would do a spectacular job hosting a | :04:08. | :04:10.
Grand Prix, but he also said there needed to be a lot of planning | :04:11. | :04:13.
and also there were questions about noise and air pollution. | :04:14. | :04:16.
Not to mention, the disruption a Grand Prix could bring. | :04:17. | :04:18.
A Grand Prix effectively would be a full day of disruption. | :04:19. | :04:21.
So, you know, you can't hold the traffic for that long. | :04:22. | :04:23.
Cheers. COMMENTATOR: | :04:24. | :04:24.
Hamilton is going to win the British Grand Prix. | :04:25. | :04:27.
Silverstone has a deal to host the British race until 2026, | :04:28. | :04:29.
F1 chief, Bernie Ecclestone, fears the cost of bringing it to | :04:30. | :04:32.
London could be simply too much. A chequered flag on | :04:33. | :04:35.
the Mall is still a long way off. Nick Beake, BBC London News. | :04:36. | :04:46.
Weather now. After a rainy night tonight, | :04:47. | :04:48.
tomorrow will be cloudy with some heavy showers, | :04:49. | :04:50.
leaving a dry warm evening. The high, 22 degrees Celsius. | :04:51. | :04:56.
That's it. We're back tomorrow evening. | :04:57. | :04:59.
From everyone on the team, enjoy your weekend. | :05:00. | :05:01.
We are seeing thunderstorms developing. Some of these will stay | :05:02. | :05:17.
with us well on into the evening to be replaced with outbreaks of rain | :05:18. | :05:22.
later in the night. The rain we had heading into western Scotland and | :05:23. | :05:25.
Northern Ireland and spreading east across the UK. There are some | :05:26. | :05:30.
heavier bursts. Coast and hill | :05:31. | :05:32. |
