The British connection - a former MI6 spy at the heart | :00:00. | :00:00.
of the latest allegations against Donald Trump. | :00:00. | :00:10.
Christopher Steele produced a dossier claiming Mr Trump had been | :00:11. | :00:12.
involved in dubious personal and professional practices. | :00:13. | :00:23.
It is the latest controversy to hit Donald Trump. It is clear about what | :00:24. | :00:34.
took place, about Russian involvement in efforts to hack | :00:35. | :00:37.
information and to have an impact on American democracy. | :00:38. | :00:41.
We'll be following the latest developments in this controversy. | :00:42. | :00:43.

West Ham's star player Dimitri Payet wants to leave and is refusing | :01:23. | :01:25.
But the manager says he won't be sold. | :01:26. | :01:50.
Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Six. | :01:51. | :01:54.
A former MI6 officer has gone into hiding after being named | :01:55. | :01:57.
as the source of the latest allegations against President-elect | :01:58. | :01:59.
Christopher Steele produced a dossier last year which included | :02:00. | :02:04.
the allegations that Mr Trump had been caught in compromising | :02:05. | :02:06.
The allegations are unproven and America's CIA, which has | :02:07. | :02:14.
acknowledged the existence of the dossier, says it has made no | :02:15. | :02:16.
Here's our security correspondent Gordon Corera | :02:17. | :02:19.
The murky world of intelligence-gathering in Moscow A | :02:20. | :02:34.
secret dossier of allegations about Trump and Russia. All written by a | :02:35. | :02:44.
former member of MI6. This is Christopher Steele, now at the | :02:45. | :02:48.
centre of controversy. His house was unoccupied today. He is supposed to | :02:49. | :02:53.
have told neighbours to look after his cats and he is said to be lying | :02:54. | :02:58.
low, fearing for his safety. What do we know about Christopher Steele? He | :02:59. | :03:03.
is 52. In the nineties he worked for Middlesbrough. MI6 in Moscow. He | :03:04. | :03:13.
founded a private intelligence company called Orbis. Last year he | :03:14. | :03:20.
was commissioned by Trump's opponents to look into Russian | :03:21. | :03:25.
connections. He came up with 35 pages of allegation. Orbis are based | :03:26. | :03:30.
here. There is no sign of Chris Steele. He is a man with contacts in | :03:31. | :03:35.
Moscow. But so far there has been no confirmation that the extraordinary | :03:36. | :03:39.
allegations he dug up there are definitely true. Thanks to his past | :03:40. | :03:45.
as a spy, Steele is unlikely to have been able to travel to Moscow | :03:46. | :03:50.
himself and will have relied on others to gather information. | :03:51. | :03:54.
Moscow's a difficult place to work in. The ruckses have a habit -- | :03:55. | :03:59.
Russians have a habit of secrecy and deception. The other complicating | :04:00. | :04:06.
factor is money. If you're going to give somebody money to tell you | :04:07. | :04:09.
something, there is a strong possibility they will tell you what | :04:10. | :04:14.
you want to hear. Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian agent | :04:15. | :04:19.
who fled to London, investigated powerful figures in Moscow and was | :04:20. | :04:28.
killed by radioactive poise son. I believe it is dangerous, | :04:29. | :04:32.
particularly after the death of my husband, because when you just | :04:33. | :04:36.
approach specific information, particularly when this information | :04:37. | :04:41.
very close to powerful people, you might be in this line and you just | :04:42. | :04:46.
easily might be killed. The Russian dossier was not written for public | :04:47. | :04:51.
consumption. But American spies have briefed the outlines to man it is | :04:52. | :04:56.
about. Its author never expected to be in the spotlight. But in the | :04:57. | :05:00.
atmosphere of American politics today, seek represents are no longer | :05:01. | :05:05.
as -- - secrets are no longer as safe as they were. | :05:06. | :05:08.
As we've heard this controversy raises serious questions | :05:09. | :05:10.
about the extent to which Russia has tried to undermine the political | :05:11. | :05:13.
process in America and whether Donald Trump is too close | :05:14. | :05:15.
Well, today some of the President-elect's | :05:16. | :05:19.
nominees for the top jobs in the new administration have made | :05:20. | :05:22.
it clear that they continue to regard Russia with | :05:23. | :05:24.
A week before inauguration day this usually an air of expectancy. But | :05:25. | :05:42.
the mood is much more feverish and electric. As allegation swirl that | :05:43. | :05:47.
Russia has compromising information about the President-elect that could | :05:48. | :06:00.
make him susceptible to black mail. Today Trump's choice as CIA head | :06:01. | :06:06.
agreed the Kremlin tried to interfere with the election. It is | :06:07. | :06:10.
clear about Russian involvement in efforts to hack information and to | :06:11. | :06:13.
have an impact on American democracy. I'm clear about what that | :06:14. | :06:18.
intelligence report says. And I have every expectation that we continue | :06:19. | :06:23.
to develop the facts that I will relay those to the president and the | :06:24. | :06:28.
team around you and you, so we can have a robust discussion about this | :06:29. | :06:34.
threat. As to the latest allegations in the dossier. I will pursue the | :06:35. | :06:41.
facts wherever they take us. And the incoming Defence Secretary took aim | :06:42. | :06:45.
at Vladimir Putin, taking a much tougher line than his new boss. I'm | :06:46. | :06:52.
all for engagement, but we have to recognise reality in what Russia is | :06:53. | :06:57.
up to. There is a decreasing areas where we can engage. Yesterday the | :06:58. | :07:09.
President-elect rejected the unverified allegations that Russia | :07:10. | :07:12.
has dirt on him. You're fake news. Go ahead. After speaking last night | :07:13. | :07:17.
to America's director of national intelligence, James Clapper, he was | :07:18. | :07:21.
as vehement on triter. Intelligence chiefs have made no | :07:22. | :07:32.
judgments on the claim. Team Trump is defiant, saying the | :07:33. | :07:56.
allegations are not true. What struck me most in Mr Clapper's | :07:57. | :08:01.
public statement that I'm sure your viewers can access, is Mr Clapper | :08:02. | :08:09.
reemphasising that the intelligence community gave no credibility to the | :08:10. | :08:14.
fake news documents. Washington is a city used to intrigue and scandal, | :08:15. | :08:21.
but not on the eve of an inauguration. Despite what the | :08:22. | :08:27.
spokeswoman said, the intelligence community has not made a | :08:28. | :08:30.
determination about the credibility of the claims. So we are seeing a | :08:31. | :08:34.
continuation of the public rift between the Trump team and the | :08:35. | :08:41.
intelligence community and equally extraordinary this rift between | :08:42. | :08:45.
incoming members of his administration and the | :08:46. | :08:48.
President-elect. You heard his incoming defence chief contradicting | :08:49. | :08:53.
the incoming commander in chief over the threat posed by Vladimir Putin. | :08:54. | :08:56.
Thank you very much. Right now blizzards are sweeping | :08:57. | :09:01.
across the UK driven Scotland was hit first - | :09:02. | :09:03.
with some schools shut Further south, dozens of flights out | :09:04. | :09:07.
of Heathrow have been cancelled and several villages on the east | :09:08. | :09:11.
coast have been evacuated after the environment agency issued | :09:12. | :09:13.
severe flood warnings. Our correspondent Duncan | :09:14. | :09:16.
Kennedy is at Heathrow. Well Georges there is a combination | :09:17. | :09:32.
of sleet and snow here at Heathrow. It is freezing! It has taken until | :09:33. | :09:36.
mid-January for the whole of the country to be affected by this | :09:37. | :09:40.
weather and what's happening is as the weather front sweeping down | :09:41. | :09:45.
through south-east, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Midlands, | :09:46. | :09:47.
here around London and heading to the east coast. But it is not just | :09:48. | :09:53.
snow coming in. There is a risk that some places can be flooded. | :09:54. | :10:01.
Scotland, where where the gorgeous meets the treacherous and the place | :10:02. | :10:08.
where the snow laid its deepest blanket. Winds piled up the drifts. | :10:09. | :10:18.
Creating scenery beyond post card perfect, but sending temperatures | :10:19. | :10:23.
below zero. It was enough to do this to the M74 near Glasgow. Drivers | :10:24. | :10:27.
spent hours crawling to their destinations. In Northern Ireland, | :10:28. | :10:33.
the traffic moved, but on roads snowed and iced under bitter | :10:34. | :10:37.
conditions. The gritters struggled to keep routes covered. It was the | :10:38. | :10:43.
same in Cumbria, where councils had to make multiple trips after the | :10:44. | :10:47.
grit was blown or washed away. Because we are trying to get salt on | :10:48. | :10:52.
the network, every time we are doing that, the rain is washing that off. | :10:53. | :10:56.
So the salt levels reduce and we have to top it up. So that is why | :10:57. | :11:01.
people will see the gritters going around the routes trying to build up | :11:02. | :11:08.
that salt level. Head south and a mixture of snow in the Midlands. In | :11:09. | :11:12.
Worcestershire, not everyone felt lucky. It is OK if you're walking. | :11:13. | :11:18.
When it comes to driving, we don't do it. Really nice. Pretty. The | :11:19. | :11:24.
first time she has seen snow. We brought her up to skr a look. The | :11:25. | :11:28.
snow came late in the day to Heathrow. But the authority had | :11:29. | :11:33.
decided to take no chances and cancelled around 80 flights. But | :11:34. | :11:38.
this wintery surge isn't just about snow. Alan and Elizabeth are among | :11:39. | :11:45.
thousands on Britain's east coast preparing for flooding as high seas | :11:46. | :11:52.
threaten to pour in. I'm upset and frightened. After the last flood I | :11:53. | :11:56.
had a couple of strokes and I don't want that again. Sorry, I'm going to | :11:57. | :12:02.
cry... A hundred soldiers in in Lincolnshire warning people about | :12:03. | :12:07.
the possibility of flooding there. They will be an alert for 24 hours. | :12:08. | :12:14.
All part of mid winter and the multiple weather experiences that it | :12:15. | :12:22.
is applying to the British Isles. Our correspondent Danny Savage is in | :12:23. | :12:28.
Skegness. What are conditions like where you are? George, it is not | :12:29. | :12:34.
often you see army trucks outside politician station. About -- police | :12:35. | :12:39.
station. About a hundred soldiers are here, knocking on doors, over | :12:40. | :12:45.
2,000 properties are feared to be vulnerable to flooding. The | :12:46. | :12:49.
conditions are OK at the moment. But they're expected to deteriorate | :12:50. | :12:54.
tonight. And it is because of a storm surge coming down the North | :12:55. | :12:58.
Sea with a strong wind, high tides and the key pinch points are around | :12:59. | :13:03.
6 in the morning and 6 at night as well. Along a 30 or 40 mile stretch | :13:04. | :13:11.
of coast. Now, this is a part of country which is haunted by memories | :13:12. | :13:19.
of floods in 1953. There is no suggestion it will be as bad. But | :13:20. | :13:24.
people are warned and if they're in two storey properties to, to move | :13:25. | :13:30.
their belongings up stairs, in case the worst does happen. But the | :13:31. | :13:34.
authorities are trying to do their best to warn people. Thank you. | :13:35. | :13:39.
British Airways cabin crew are to stage a fresh strike | :13:40. | :13:41.
Members of the Unite union will walk out for three days from January 19th | :13:42. | :13:45.
following two days of industrial action this week. | :13:46. | :13:49.
Investigators say 23 people and organisations could face | :13:50. | :13:50.
prosecution for the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 fans died. | :13:51. | :13:56.
The Crown Prosecution Service will decide whether or | :13:57. | :13:58.
An inquest last year found the victims were unlawfully killed | :13:59. | :14:03.
in 1989 and that the match commander was responsible for manslaughter | :14:04. | :14:06.
Our Correspondent Judith Moritz reports. | :14:07. | :14:16.
# Walk on! They called it justice day a moment of history. The ruling | :14:17. | :14:24.
that 96 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed at Hillsborough. | :14:25. | :14:27.
It was the verdict their families wanted so badly. Among them | :14:28. | :14:35.
Charlotte Hennessey, who was just six when her father died. Now the | :14:36. | :14:41.
families have learned 23 people and organisations could face | :14:42. | :14:44.
prosecution. There are people that I believe that have committed criminal | :14:45. | :14:47.
offences and I think that they should be brought to justice for | :14:48. | :14:51.
that. Because if 96 South Yorkshire police officers had died that day | :14:52. | :14:56.
and Liverpool fans were responsible, they would still be paying the | :14:57. | :15:01.
price. The operation investigated the disaster and identified 15 | :15:02. | :15:06.
criminal suspects. Offences being considered include gross negligence | :15:07. | :15:11.
manslaughter. We don't know who the suspects are. At the inquest the | :15:12. | :15:17.
jury found the fans were unlawfully killed. The IPCC investigated | :15:18. | :15:24.
allegations of a cover up and has identified eight criminal suspects. | :15:25. | :15:28.
Offences considered include misconduct in a public office. The | :15:29. | :15:33.
former Chief Constable has revealed that he has been treated as a | :15:34. | :15:39.
suspect. At the inquest he said he was not part of a black propaganda | :15:40. | :15:45.
unit set up to blame Liverpool fans. Long since the noise of celebration | :15:46. | :15:52.
has died down here, there is still a clamour for justice for those who | :15:53. | :15:57.
campaigned for so long will have to remain patient. It will be months | :15:58. | :16:02.
before they find out who if anyone will face prosecution. The legal | :16:03. | :16:06.
process sometimes does not work as quickly as we would like. I | :16:07. | :16:12.
understand families and others frustration at the time that might | :16:13. | :16:15.
be take on the get something to court. Particularly given that these | :16:16. | :16:24.
are events of 28 years ago. Some campaigner say the number of | :16:25. | :16:27.
suspects of the alleged cover up is too low and the Crown Prosecution | :16:28. | :16:31.
Service says it will be up to six months before it decides on charges. | :16:32. | :16:39.
The former British spy at the heart of the latest | :16:40. | :16:44.
allegations against Donald Trump is named as Christopher Steele. | :16:45. | :16:46.
How we filled up with festive food and drink - | :16:47. | :16:50.
bringing Christmas cheer to retailers. | :16:51. | :16:58.
Coming up in Sports day in the next 15 minutes, we will hear more | :16:59. | :17:05.
tributes to Graham Taylor and reflect on the former -- on the | :17:06. | :17:13.
career of the former Watford, Aston Villa and England manager, who has | :17:14. | :17:14.
died at the age of 72. The world's first tidal | :17:15. | :17:19.
lagoon to capture green energy from the sea | :17:20. | :17:21.
has come a step closer The proposal has been backed | :17:22. | :17:23.
by a government-commissioned review and there are hopes of developing | :17:24. | :17:26.
a network of larger lagoons According to independent analysts, | :17:27. | :17:29.
a network of tidal lagoons could generate more than 10% | :17:30. | :17:34.
of the UK's electricity by 2030. That's enough energy | :17:35. | :17:39.
to power 9 million homes. That would result in a 36% cut | :17:40. | :17:42.
in the UK's CO2 emissions by 2035, allowing the government's current | :17:43. | :17:45.
carbon targets to be met. The plan is to generate power from | :17:46. | :18:03.
the ebb and flow of the tide. Today, supporters of a lagoon in Swansea | :18:04. | :18:06.
Bay believe a bright future for this type of renewable energy is on the | :18:07. | :18:11.
horizon. We want the lagoon to become more than just a power | :18:12. | :18:14.
station. A sea wall more than six miles long with loop across the bay. | :18:15. | :18:20.
Energy harnessed by 16 hydroelectric turbines. Today's report says tidal | :18:21. | :18:29.
lagoons can deliver a clean supply of energy, allowing the UK the | :18:30. | :18:35.
chance to become the global leader in this type of technology. It's | :18:36. | :18:40.
great when a government review spends six months crawling over | :18:41. | :18:45.
every aspect and then says we agree, there's jobs to be had, cheap power | :18:46. | :18:50.
to be had, there is a global industry to be had in the UK. But | :18:51. | :18:55.
his plans for three further lagoons in Wales and two more in England | :18:56. | :19:00.
would be delayed until the impact of the smaller spawns the scheme is | :19:01. | :19:04.
assessed. On cost, the report suggests that lagoons could compare | :19:05. | :19:10.
favourably with nuclear. A view shared by this independent expert. | :19:11. | :19:13.
We don't have an enormous amount of options in terms of decarbonisation. | :19:14. | :19:21.
This project adds about 25p per annum to consumer bills. If it | :19:22. | :19:26.
works, we may have unlocked substantial potential. But other | :19:27. | :19:30.
questions remain, including the impact on marine life. These charter | :19:31. | :19:34.
boat owners who take anglers out in Swansea Marina, are worried fish | :19:35. | :19:39.
stocks could be significantly depleted. It could impact on the | :19:40. | :19:49.
card. -- on the cod. The cod could be looking for their food elsewhere | :19:50. | :19:52.
and that would be the end of that, there would be no more fish. The | :19:53. | :19:57.
prospect of jobs and the boost for the local economy makes the tidal | :19:58. | :20:00.
lagoon attractive to people who live here. It will now consider the | :20:01. | :20:11.
report's recommendations, while the body responsible for protecting the | :20:12. | :20:14.
environment in Wales has yet to grant the marine license needed | :20:15. | :20:18.
before any work can begin. Sian Lloyd, BBC News, Swansea. | :20:19. | :20:23.
There was plenty of festive cheer for some of Britain's biggest | :20:24. | :20:25.
M, Tesco and John Lewis and Debenhams all announced positive | :20:26. | :20:30.
Here's our Business Correspondent Emma Simpson. | :20:31. | :20:36.
Tesco's sales were up today and other supermarkets have | :20:37. | :20:46.
With the help of Mrs Claus, clothing sales grew for the first | :20:47. | :21:00.
time in two years, up by more than 2%. | :21:01. | :21:02.
It has also focused on getting the price right the first time, | :21:03. | :21:19.
so when you buy something, there's less risk of the price being reduced | :21:20. | :21:23.
On the whole, Christmas turned out OK. | :21:24. | :21:25.
But retailers are much more worried about what lies ahead. | :21:26. | :21:28.
40% of its sales were via the Internet. | :21:29. | :21:33.
With shopping habits changing fast, it says it needs to invest more | :21:34. | :21:36.
online and prepare for the impact of a weaker pound. | :21:37. | :21:40.
And those things are happening and you've got the consumer. | :21:41. | :21:49.
Who knows what happens next year, but the predictions are we're | :21:50. | :21:53.
going to see a slowdown in the growth of consumer income. | :21:54. | :21:55.
For retail, 2016 ended on a positive note. | :21:56. | :21:59.
The question is, can spending be maintained? | :22:00. | :22:00.
The former England football manager Graham Taylor has died | :22:01. | :22:10.
Taylor rose to prominence by taking Watford from the old Fourth | :22:11. | :22:18.
to First Division and the FA Cup Final. | :22:19. | :22:20.
His club chairman then, Sir Elton John, said today that he'd | :22:21. | :22:24.
lost a "brother", with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. | :22:25. | :22:27.
Natalie Pirks looks back at his career. | :22:28. | :22:29.
The sound of hitting a football thrills me. Football was in Graham | :22:30. | :22:38.
Taylor's soul. From managing Lincoln city... I think I've got qualities | :22:39. | :22:43.
as regards coaching. To the highs and lows of the England job, he | :22:44. | :22:47.
remained passionate about his first love. In 1977, he joined Elton | :22:48. | :22:52.
John's Watford. Fans their call him God, three promotions in five years | :22:53. | :22:58.
tell you why. He turned them into the family club during the age of | :22:59. | :23:02.
hooliganism. There was also an FA Cup final to cherish. He had that | :23:03. | :23:06.
smile that would make you feel comfortable and you could talk to | :23:07. | :23:10.
him. You also felt that, whatever he said to you, it was true. Aston | :23:11. | :23:17.
Villa first came calling in 1987. He led the club to promotion a year | :23:18. | :23:21.
later and that turned their heads of the FA | :23:22. | :23:23.
-- in 1990. Do I not like that. Those five simple words would come | :23:24. | :23:32.
to define his England career. He was dipped | :23:33. | :23:35.
hit -- he was depicted as a tabloid turnip and criticised for failing to | :23:36. | :23:44.
make the World Cup. One of the reasons I admired him and liked him | :23:45. | :23:50.
so much was coming you never got any bull from him, he was just read down | :23:51. | :23:54.
the middle and told it as it was. Some people didn't like that but I | :23:55. | :24:01.
loved it, I certainly admire that. He was surprised and honoured to | :24:02. | :24:08.
receive an MBE for services to football but his friends were | :24:09. | :24:12.
tonight the game mourns the loss of one of football's true gents. | :24:13. | :24:22.
The former England manager Graham Taylor, who's | :24:23. | :24:24.
Lala Land will open in the UK tomorrow. | :24:25. | :24:28.
The romantic musical comedy has already won seven golden globe | :24:29. | :24:30.
But is it likely to woo British audiences? | :24:31. | :24:33.
Our Arts editor Will Gompertz has spoken to the film's writer | :24:34. | :24:36.
# City of stars # Ayush dining just for me? Welcome | :24:37. | :24:49.
to Lala Land, the Hollywood musical starring Anna Stone and Ryan Gosling | :24:50. | :24:53.
which looks like it's going to sing and dance itself to Oscars glory. It | :24:54. | :24:59.
is a genre of film-making which its director thinks is unfairly derided | :25:00. | :25:06.
as being a bit naff. I don't think musicals are this outdated thing | :25:07. | :25:09.
that they sometimes get labelled as. They're also not just a purely | :25:10. | :25:13.
fantastical thing that people sometimes labelled them as. I think | :25:14. | :25:19.
musicals can they aim real lot about real life and human emotions and | :25:20. | :25:23.
humanity and where we are right now. And the need for dreams. | :25:24. | :25:29.
# Here's to the ones who dream # Foolish as they may seem. | :25:30. | :25:39.
From a writer and a director's point of view, what can you do any song | :25:40. | :25:45.
that you can't do in a script? I think of a song in a musical as a | :25:46. | :25:51.
reflection of a person's innermost feelings. It is feeling is that | :25:52. | :25:57.
can't be or in kind of action. It is feelings that need the outlet of a | :25:58. | :25:59.
song. We had about a 3-4 month rehearsal | :26:00. | :26:11.
period of Prep where everyday Ryan and Emma were in dance lessons, | :26:12. | :26:16.
singing lessons, piano lessons. I think it's also kind of fun, if | :26:17. | :26:21.
you're going to work with music stars, put them outside their | :26:22. | :26:28.
comfort zone, see the vulnerability. He is not yet 32 but already being | :26:29. | :26:34.
lauded and applauded for his talents, he is a young director | :26:35. | :26:43.
living Lala Land's dream. Will Gompertz, ABC News. | :26:44. | :26:45.
challenging weather earlier. Millions of people are trying to get | :26:46. | :26:54.
home through this stuff. It started off as heavy rain but in the last | :26:55. | :27:00.
three or four hours it has turned to snow initially in the west of London | :27:01. | :27:04.
but now that is spreading across the capital and it is snowing in London | :27:05. | :27:12.
as we speak. Over the hills, a view centimetres of snow as well. The | :27:13. | :27:16.
snow doesn't last for ever mind you, it does clear through later this | :27:17. | :27:20.
evening. As the skies clear, temperatures will plummet and | :27:21. | :27:24.
everything will freeze, be it water or slush or snow. It will be a very | :27:25. | :27:28.
nasty night out there if you are on the move. Snow showers to the West | :27:29. | :27:34.
of England and Wales as well and a blizzard racing across the north of | :27:35. | :27:38.
Scotland up over the mountains, with Dale force wind around the | :27:39. | :27:42.
north-eastern coast. Temperature is widely close to or below freezing | :27:43. | :27:46.
where you have got snow cover and some pretty violent winds across | :27:47. | :27:50.
coastal areas. There is still a band of snow and through the early hours | :27:51. | :27:55.
that will move its way southwards, could give a view centimetres | :27:56. | :28:02.
inland, more like rain or sleet, but eventually it might head down to | :28:03. | :28:09.
London for tomorrow's rush-hour, what to watch out for. But for many | :28:10. | :28:14.
of us we will wake up tomorrow to seems like this, roads full of | :28:15. | :28:22.
slush. Further wintry showers around exposed northern western areas and | :28:23. | :28:25.
further accumulations, as we have heard on the news the possibility of | :28:26. | :28:28.
a storm surge down the North Sea. That is because the winds will be | :28:29. | :28:33.
that strong. One or two or three degrees or even lower than that when | :28:34. | :28:34.
the snow remains all day long. | :28:35. | :28:37. |
