Good afternoon. It's estimated millions of shoppers headed to the | :00:24. | :00:28.
shopsed to bag a bargain, at the Boxing Day sales. Retailers across | :00:28. | :00:32.
the UK are reporting strong sales. Some stores opened at 6am. Many of | :00:32. | :00:35.
them offered huge discounts after a tough trading year. Here's Richard | :00:35. | :00:44.
Lister. And they're off! Customers came from around the world to be | :00:44. | :00:48.
first through the doors of selfridges in London. They broke | :00:48. | :00:52.
sales record for the firm today. Its four branches made more than 1 | :00:52. | :00:56.
million an hour. We didn't spend much throughout the year. We saved | :00:56. | :01:01.
up for this. We haven't spent much. It is all about the big sales. | :01:01. | :01:05.
don't really have a budget, but come to have a good look around and | :01:05. | :01:11.
see what bargains we can get really. One, two, three... Go! They were | :01:11. | :01:15.
weary already, having lined up long before dawn. Queues at some shops | :01:15. | :01:19.
were several thousand strong by opening time, from London to Leeds, | :01:19. | :01:22.
shopping centres reported big increases in the numbers of people | :01:22. | :01:26.
looking for a bargain. When the shops are as busy as this, it's | :01:26. | :01:29.
hard to imagine that this year has been a tough time for retailers. It | :01:29. | :01:33.
has been for many, of course, some High Street names didn't even make | :01:33. | :01:37.
it to Christmas this year and for those that remain, prices have been | :01:37. | :01:44.
slashed for weeks and for some, the season will be make or break. | :01:44. | :01:47.
Christmas! Across the country stores have been bribing customers | :01:47. | :01:51.
to come in with big price cuts. This Teesside shopping centre was | :01:52. | :01:56.
typical. Profit margins have been cut to the bone. There's a massive | :01:56. | :01:59.
margin impact for this. Some of the stores will come out of this in | :01:59. | :02:02.
January and February, look back, counting the figures and thinking, | :02:02. | :02:07.
we've not have a very good Christmas. Glasgow's shoppers were | :02:07. | :02:11.
also out in force. Online sales have been booming too. But some | :02:11. | :02:15.
retailers will now be anxiously checking their sales figures to see | :02:15. | :02:20.
if they've had enough customers to cover their costs. | :02:20. | :02:24.
As thousands of shoppers were at the sales, a man was stabbed to | :02:24. | :02:29.
death in Oxford street in Central London. He's thought to have been | :02:29. | :02:33.
in his late teens or early 20s. Police officers, an ambulance team | :02:33. | :02:36.
and Air Ambulance were deployed, but the man died at the scene. | :02:36. | :02:39.
Philippa Thomas is there for us now. Terrible thing to happen and in | :02:39. | :02:46.
full view of shoppers? understand it happened right behind | :02:46. | :02:52.
where I'm standing now, inside a Foot Locker sports shoe store. An | :02:52. | :02:55.
argument broke out. What we hear is it seems that the argument spilled | :02:55. | :02:59.
out into the street. That's where the young man was stabbed. Now | :02:59. | :03:03.
there is a forensics tent there. Officers are gathering what | :03:03. | :03:07.
evidence they can. I spoke to the inspector in charge of the crime | :03:07. | :03:11.
scene and he told me that ten arrests were made, nine of which | :03:11. | :03:15.
they're pretty certain are linked to this incident. The police know | :03:15. | :03:18.
the identity of the young man. There are family members at a | :03:18. | :03:23.
nearby police station, but they haven't revealed the identity yet. | :03:23. | :03:28.
Hundreds of thousands of shoppers make it to Oxford Street on Boxing | :03:28. | :03:32.
Day, potentially a lot of witnesses and a lot of disruption. | :03:32. | :03:35.
Police in Greater Manchester are investigating the death of a man | :03:35. | :03:39.
who was shot in Salford early this morning while out with a group of | :03:39. | :03:43.
friends. Officers say the 23-year- old Lancaster University student, | :03:43. | :03:47.
who was visiting the area for Christmas, was shot at close range. | :03:47. | :03:51.
Judith Moritz reports. In the early hours of this morning, a group of | :03:51. | :03:55.
nine Indian students visiting Manchester for Christmas were here, | :03:55. | :03:59.
outside a McDonald's restaurant, a couple of miles from the city | :03:59. | :04:01.
centre. They were approached by two men, who started a conversation | :04:01. | :04:06.
with one of the group. Just A Minute later, a handgun was pulled | :04:06. | :04:09.
out and the gunman shot the 23- year-old student in the head at | :04:09. | :04:15.
close range. The police have launched a murder investigation. | :04:15. | :04:20.
It's a shocking incident. It would appear at this stage to be | :04:20. | :04:23.
unprovoked. We want people from the community to come forward, if | :04:23. | :04:27.
they've witnessed this and can tell us who's responsible or have any | :04:27. | :04:30.
information whatsoever. If they were in the area or saw someone | :04:30. | :04:34.
running off, a lad with a grey top, that would be very helpful to us. | :04:34. | :04:38.
The gunman is described as a slim, white man in his 20s. Police have | :04:38. | :04:43.
not yet released the identity of the 23-year-old man who died, | :04:43. | :04:47.
except to say that he'd been studying at Lancaster University, | :04:47. | :04:51.
and his parents, who are in India, have been informed. This is the | :04:51. | :04:55.
second time that someone's been shot dead in this immediate area in | :04:55. | :04:58.
recent months. In September there was another fatal gaun tack over | :04:58. | :05:03.
the road from here. The police say there's no connection between the | :05:03. | :05:07.
two shootings, but there will be understandable anxiety in the | :05:07. | :05:13.
community to. That end, they've increased patrols here. | :05:13. | :05:17.
Prince Phillip is said to be in good spirits having spent another | :05:17. | :05:20.
day in hospital. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on when he | :05:20. | :05:23.
would be discharged. He's not expected to leave hospital today. | :05:23. | :05:25.
Our correspondent Colette Hume is at Papworth Hospital for us. What | :05:25. | :05:32.
more can you tell us? In the last few minutes, it's become clear that | :05:32. | :05:35.
the Duke of Edinburgh will not leave hospital here in | :05:35. | :05:38.
Cambridgeshire tonight. That will be a fourth night he spends here | :05:38. | :05:41.
following that procedure on Friday. He arrived at the hospital | :05:42. | :05:46.
complaining of chest pains. He's had no visitors at all today. But a | :05:46. | :05:50.
spokesman for the Palace says that he is under observation, he is in | :05:50. | :05:53.
good spirits and Her Majesty, the Queen, is being kept informed of | :05:53. | :05:57.
her husband's progress. We're not expecting any more from the Palace | :05:57. | :06:02.
tomorrow. No visitors today. Yesterday six of the Queen and | :06:02. | :06:04.
Prince Phillip's eight grandchildren came to the hospital, | :06:04. | :06:08.
spending around 45 minutes here. The Queen visited her husband on | :06:08. | :06:10.
Saturday. That's the situation tonight. The Prince is preparing to | :06:10. | :06:17.
spend a fourth night here at Papworth Hospital. | :06:17. | :06:21.
Syrian Human Rights Act vists say at least 20 people have been killed | :06:21. | :06:25.
in Syria today by government forces. It took place in Homs. After nine | :06:25. | :06:28.
months of violence the latest deaths come on the day 50 Arab | :06:28. | :06:31.
League observers are due to arrive in the country to monitor the | :06:31. | :06:33.
treatment of pro-democracy protesters. The BBC and other | :06:34. | :06:36.
journalists are prevented from reporting within Syria, but we can | :06:36. | :06:43.
speak to Jim Muir who's in Beirut. Disturbing images emerging of that | :06:43. | :06:52.
attack in Homs. Absolutely, yes. We're shown on u tube video footage | :06:52. | :06:58.
which is too horrendous for us to show. It's too explicit. It shows | :06:58. | :07:03.
at least four bodies sprawled in the streets in debris and amidst | :07:03. | :07:07.
smashed cars, obviously the aftermath of shelling. We're told | :07:07. | :07:12.
this habed today in Homs, which has been the focus of a lot of the | :07:13. | :07:17.
violence this the last few days. This comes just as the Arab League | :07:17. | :07:20.
monitors are on the way. They're in the air now. They should be | :07:20. | :07:24.
arriving in an hour or two ready to begin the job of deploying around | :07:24. | :07:28.
the country very soon, probably first thing in the morning, because | :07:28. | :07:32.
the way has been paved by an advanced group who have been there | :07:32. | :07:35.
since last week. They will be trying to find out the truth of | :07:35. | :07:40.
what is happening in places like Homs, is the government randomly | :07:41. | :07:44.
shelling independent neighbourhoods, killing civilians for its own sake? | :07:44. | :07:48.
Or is there armed resistance from those areas, as it strongly | :07:48. | :07:50.
suggested. That's what they'll be trying to find out. Whether they | :07:50. | :07:55.
can get there and do it is an open question at the moment. | :07:55. | :07:58.
The authorities in Japan have been criticised sharply for their | :07:58. | :08:03.
handling of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant following the | :08:03. | :08:06.
tsunami in March. A government- appointed panel described the | :08:07. | :08:11.
response to the disaster as "confused". They found the plant's | :08:11. | :08:14.
operators and industry regulator failed to anticipate the disaster | :08:14. | :08:18.
and grossly underestimated the risk of tsunami. | :08:18. | :08:24.
Horse racing now and Kauto Star has won a record fifth King George VI | :08:24. | :08:29.
chase. Ridden by Ruby Walsh and trained by Paul Nicholls, he held | :08:29. | :08:34.
off last season's winner, Long Run. Tim Franks reports. Weather at | :08:34. | :08:38.
Kempton may have been mild. The line up was frankly hot. Never mind | :08:38. | :08:42.
that there were seven runners for the King George. This ha had the | :08:42. | :08:49.
smell of a two-horse race, Long Run and Kauto Star, young versus old, | :08:49. | :08:55.
amateur jockey versus naturaled pro. At the last King George, Long Run | :08:55. | :08:59.
overwhelmed caughto, winning by a country might. This time Kauto Star | :08:59. | :09:05.
made the running and jumped with energy and precision. Long Run, | :09:05. | :09:10.
several years his junior, could only watch as Kauto stepped further | :09:10. | :09:14.
and further ahead. Long Run may have been the bookies' favourite. | :09:14. | :09:22.
No doubt about the crowd's. They roared with joy. This horse is | :09:22. | :09:26.
amazing. He's outlasted the best of all time. He's lasted than any | :09:26. | :09:31.
other horse. That makes him so brilliant. No horse before has won | :09:31. | :09:36.
the King George five times. Horse racing is a soft hearted, drink | :09:36. | :09:42.
soaked sport. Today most fans' noses are red with emotion. | :09:42. | :09:46.
There's been the busy Boxing Day football schedule. Manchester | :09:46. | :09:51.
United celebrating after an emphatic win over Wigan, 5-0 | :09:51. | :09:56. |
