Two people are stabbed, one fatally, in separate incidents, among

thousands of sales shoppers. The stabbings took place on London's

Oxford Street as shoppers flocked to the boxing day sales.

stabbed, one fatally, amid horrified shoppers on London's

Oxford Street. As thousands of people thronged the shops for the

first day of the post-Christmas sales, a teenager was stabbed after

a fight broke out. Police officers, an ambulance team and an air

ambulance were deployed but he died at the scene. Hours later, a second

man was stabbed in the leg. Philippa Thomas reports.

Police officers had to hold back thousands of shoppers intent on

bargain hunting in the heart of London, as the news filtered

through that a young man had been stabbed to death. There had been an

argument inside a Ford Ka Chris Hughes store. The fight had, it

seems, spilled out onto the pavement -- inside a foot blocker

shoe store. The police appealed for witnesses as they began gathering

evidence. He would appear to have been stabbed, I cannot confirm that

yet but it seems a weapon has been used. There appears to have been

two groups of young people opposing each other, involved in this

incident. Officers say eight young -- a number of knives have been

retrieved. Police say this section will be cordoned off at least three

tomorrow. It should be one of the busiest sections of shopping street

in Britain but instead, it is very much a crime scene. Tonight, a

second attack has been reported a near by. Another man stabbed and

taken to hospital. Scotland Yard says it is too early to say whether

the attacks are linked. Across the country, it's estimated

that millions of shoppers headed to the shops for the Boxing Day sales.

Retailers are reporting strong levels of spending - some stores

opened at 6:00 this morning. Many of them offered huge discounts

after a tough trading year. Here's And their off! Customers came from

around the world to be first through the doors of Selfridges in

London. It helped break sales records for the firm today. It made

more than �1 million a year. We did not spend much the Rabiya, we saved

up for this. It is all about the good sales. -- not spent much

throughout the year. I have come to see what bargains we can get.

were weary already, having lined up long before dawn. Queues at some

shops were several thousand strong by opening time. From London to

Leeds, shopping centres reported big increases in the number of

people looking for a bargain. When the shops are as busy as this, it

is hard to imagine this time -- this year has been a tough time for

retailers. But it has been for many, some high-street names did not even

make it to Christmas this year. For those that remain, prices have been

slashed four weeks and for some, this season will be make or break.

with big price cuts. This Teesside shopping centre was typical, profit

margins have been cut to the bone. There is a massive impact for this

and some of these stores will look back, counting the figures and

think, we have not had a very good Christmas. Glasgow's shoppers will

Some retailers will be checking figures to see if they have had

enough customers to cover their costs.

Police in Greater Manchester have named the Lancaster University

student shot in Salford early this morning. 23-year-old Anuj Bidve was

killed while out with a group of friends. Officers say he was

visiting the area for Christmas and was shot at close range. Judith

Moritz reports. This is Anuj Bidve, a 23-year-old

Indian National who was a student at Lancaster University. Shot dead

in the early hours of this morning, his friends have paid tribute

online, saying they can't believe what has happened. He had decided

to stay in Manchester over the Christmas break, and was out for

the night with a group of friends also from India. They were outside

this McDonald's restaurant, a short distance from the city centre, when

they were approached by two men. One of them spoke briefly to Anuj

Bidve before pulling out a handgun and shooting him in the head at

close range, and running off. The police say the attack was

completely unprovoked. It is a shocking incident. It would appear

to be unprovoked. The important thing is, we want people from the

community to come forward if they had witnessed this, and can tell us

hook is responsible. If they were in the area Abby Tan, if they saw

someone running -- if they were in the area at the time and saw

someone running of, in a grey top, that would be very helpful. The man

is described as slim and white and in his 20s. Police have launched a

murder inquiry and say they have not ruled out a racist motive. They

have appealed for anyone with information to Concorde. It is the

second and someone has been shot dead in this immediate area -- with

information to come forward. The police say there is no connection

between the two shootings but say there will be an understandable

level of anxiety in the community, and have increased patrols here.

Prince Philip is spending another night in hospital in Cambridgeshire

after receiving treatment for a blocked artery in his heart.

Buckingham Palace said he'd been in good spirits today. Our

correspondent, Colette Hume, has more details.

The Duke of Edinburgh will spend a fortnight here in Cambridgeshire. A

spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the Duke remains under

observation and is in good spirits. The Queen is being kept informed.

Prince Philip, who is 90, has not had any royal visitors today.

Yesterday, six of his eight grandchildren came here to the

hospital and spent around 45 minutes at his bedside. They

included Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice, Princess

Eugenie, tsar and Peter Phillips. On Saturday, the Queen and the

couple's four children came here. - We are hoping for a further update

from Buckingham Palace in the morning.

Syrian human rights activists say at least 20 people have been killed

in Syria today by government forces. The attacks took place in the city

of Homs. After nine months of violence, the latest deaths come on

the day 50 Arab League observers arrived in the country to monitor

the treatment of pro-democracy protestors. Jim Muir reports from

What the activists want the world to see. Underwrote viable footage

of what they called mac a r and verifiable footage of what they say

is the destruction caused in Homs - They have showed pictures far too

grim to broadcast of the limp and bleeding carcases on one of the

streets in the Baba Amr district of Homs. Activists are calling it a

massacre, that this has been going on for weeks with people being

reported killed every day. Under the peace agreement signed with the

Arab League, the government is supposed to withdraw armed forces

from the streets. Apart from the shelling, it is clear that tanks

are also there now. The Arab observers want to go to Homs as

soon as they can. The advanced planning team has been taken to see

the aftermath of the double bombing attack in Damascus on Friday. It

was an unprecedented development which the authorities say the

uprising is based on terrorism. Activists say the regime itself

stage the bombings to impress the observers that it is all about

terror. The monitors are hoping the authorities will be at least as co-

operative in letting them see what is happening in Hall. -- in Homs.

The authorities in Japan have been criticised sharply for their

handling of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima plant following the

tsunami in March. A government- appointed panel described the

response to the disaster as "confused". Their report found the

plant's operators - and industry regulators - had failed to

anticipate the disaster and grossly underestimated the risk of a

tsunami. The Agriculture Minister has said

the Hunting Act "simply doesn't work". Jim Paice made his comments

ahead of the traditional post- Christmas hunts across the country.

He said the coalition had agreed there would be a vote on whether to

repeal the act when there was time in the parliamentary calendar.

Labour says it will oppose calls to change the law.

Horse racing now, and Kauto Star has won a record fifth King George

VI Chase at Kempton Park. Ridden by Ruby Walsh and trained by Paul

Nicholls, Kauto Star held off the favourite - last season's winner

Long Run - to win by a-length-and- a-quarter. Tim Franks reports.

The weather at Kempton may have been mild, the line-up was Frankie

hot. Never mind that there was 7th runners for the King George, this

had the smell the two-horse race -- frankly hot. Long Run and Kauto

Star, young versus old, amateur jockey this is an old pro. At the

Last King George, a Long Run won by a country mile. This time, Kauto

Star made the running and jumped with energy and precision. Long run

may have been the bookie's favourite, no doubt about the

crowds, they roared with joy. keep a horse going as long as this

is amazing. He has outlasted any other horse and that is what makes

him so brilliant. No horse before has won the King George six-times.
