Good evening.

0:00:240:00:27

Britain's most decorated Olympian

0:00:270:00:29

and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins

0:00:290:00:31

has announced his retirement from cycling.

0:00:310:00:33

In a statement this afternoon he said he had been lucky enough

0:00:330:00:35

to live a dream and make a career out of a sport

0:00:350:00:38

he fell in love with when he was 12.

0:00:380:00:40

It ends a stunning run of success which also

0:00:400:00:43

brought him World Championships and many other honours.

0:00:430:00:45

But it follows questions about medical treatments

0:00:450:00:46

he received in training.

0:00:460:00:48

This report from our Sports News Correspondent Richard Conway.

0:00:480:00:52

On the road and on the track, Sir Bradley Wiggins dominated his

0:00:520:00:55

sport like few others.

0:00:550:01:01

COMMENTATOR: Gold medallist and Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins.

0:01:010:01:03

He's the UK's most decorated Olympian,

0:01:030:01:06

winning eight medals over 16 years.

0:01:060:01:09

In 2012, he became the first Briton to claim the Tour de France title.

0:01:090:01:14

Achievements which took him on a path to the Palace.

0:01:140:01:19

But, after so much that sets over the years,

0:01:190:01:23

Sir Bradley Wiggins' remarkable career has finally rolled to a halt.

0:01:230:01:26

In a statement, he said:

0:01:260:01:29

"I have been lucky enough to live a dream

0:01:290:01:32

and fulfil my childhood aspirations.

0:01:320:01:34

"Kids from Kilburn don't win Olympic golds and Tour de Frances.

0:01:340:01:38

"They do now."

0:01:380:01:40

Wiggins kindled his love of cycling at his local club in south London.

0:01:400:01:46

At the age of 12, he knew what he wanted to achieve,

0:01:460:01:50

telling his teachers he'd one day be an Olympic champion.

0:01:500:01:54

He delivered on that promise winning his first gold

0:01:540:01:56

at the 2004 Athens games.

0:01:560:02:00

All at a time when British cycling success was far from the norm.

0:02:000:02:04

Wiggins has been at the heart of British cycling's

0:02:040:02:07

transformation into world beaters.

0:02:070:02:09

Leading to unprecedented success in Rio this year.

0:02:090:02:13

His personality, intertwined with a love of mod culture,

0:02:130:02:16

helped him to transcend and popularise his sport

0:02:160:02:21

with cycling officials tonight praising his impact on encouraging

0:02:210:02:23

the public to get on their bikes.

0:02:230:02:26

His retirement comes at a time of heightened scrutiny

0:02:260:02:29

into his career, though.

0:02:290:02:32

Earlier this year, Russian hackers revealed Wiggins

0:02:320:02:40

had been given powerful steroids

0:02:400:02:45

injections before three key races, including his 2012

0:02:450:02:47

Tour de France win.

0:02:470:02:49

The substance involved is banned under normal circumstances,

0:02:490:02:51

as it can be performance enhancing but Wiggins legally and legitimately

0:02:510:02:53

applied for a medical exemption, he says to treat hay fever.

0:02:530:02:58

This wasn't about trying to find a way to gain an unfair advantage.

0:02:580:03:01

This was about putting myself back on a level playing field, in order

0:03:010:03:04

to compete at the highest level.

0:03:040:03:06

One of Britain's's brightest sports careers is now at an end

0:03:060:03:10

but it was one that was coloured throughout by gold and yellow.

0:03:100:03:13

Richard Conway, BBC News.

0:03:130:03:18

A woman has died after up to 20 vehicles were involved in

0:03:180:03:21

a massive pile up on the A40 near Witney in Oxfordshire.

0:03:210:03:24

The crashes stretched for more than half a mile and happened

0:03:240:03:26

in thick fog this morning.

0:03:260:03:28

Sangita Myska sent this report from the scene.

0:03:280:03:32

Photographs taken minutes after this morning's crash

0:03:320:03:35

showing chilling detail, the mangled wreckage

0:03:350:03:37

of at least 20 vehicles.

0:03:370:03:40

Eyewitnesses described seeing cars skidding

0:03:400:03:43

across the road through thick fog, smashing into one another, spilling

0:03:430:03:49

debris across two lanes of the A40.

0:03:490:03:52

I was just joining the A40 when I'd seen the brake

0:03:520:03:55

lights and hazard lights, so I came to a stop and then

0:03:550:03:58

obviously I got out of the vehicle and saw the carnage ahead

0:03:580:04:01

and the carnage behind.

0:04:010:04:02

Emotions were very high.

0:04:020:04:03

People were obviously scared.

0:04:030:04:06

It was a bit like a movie scene, really.

0:04:060:04:08

A lot of havoc, people injured.

0:04:080:04:09

A lot of destruction.

0:04:090:04:11

This afternoon, recovery vehicles continued to clear wreckage

0:04:110:04:15

in an attempt to reopen a road that links London to Wales.

0:04:150:04:21

It is several hours since the accident

0:04:210:04:23

this morning and you can see there are about a dozen

0:04:230:04:26

vehicles yet to be cleared from this part of the A40.

0:04:260:04:29

There is still a thick fog over this area of road.

0:04:290:04:32

Visibility now is probably about 200 metres.

0:04:320:04:35

Police officers here tell me that this morning,

0:04:350:04:38

when the crashes happened, drivers could see no further

0:04:380:04:42

than about 15 metres ahead

0:04:420:04:44

and that there was black ice on this road.

0:04:440:04:46

One woman in her 50s died at the scene of the crash.

0:04:460:04:49

Two other people remain in a serious condition in hospital.

0:04:490:04:53

As families continue to crisscross Britain this holiday,

0:04:530:04:55

the police are urging travellers to check weather conditions

0:04:550:04:58

and to drive with caution.

0:04:580:05:04

President-elect Donald Trump has gone head-to-head

0:05:040:05:07

with the outgoing US government over its treatment of Israel.

0:05:070:05:11

Mr Trump tweeted that Israel was being treated

0:05:110:05:13

with total disdain and disrespect.

0:05:130:05:16

And the Israeli Prime Minister has reacted with anger

0:05:160:05:19

to a speech by the US secretary of State John Kerry warning that

0:05:190:05:22

settlement building by Israelis in the West Bank threatens

0:05:220:05:24

hopes for peace.

0:05:240:05:26

Our Middle East Correspondent Yolande Knell reports

0:05:260:05:28

from Jerusalem.

0:05:280:05:31

Tonight, another angry intervention by President-elect Trump,

0:05:310:05:34

this time over Middle East peace.

0:05:340:05:37

On Twitter, he complained that the US was treating Israel

0:05:370:05:39

with total disdain and disrespect, but told it to stay strong

0:05:390:05:44

until 20th January, when he takes office.

0:05:440:05:49

A speech by US Secretary of State John Kerry brought on the row.

0:05:490:05:52

He criticised Israel, accusing its government

0:05:520:05:54

of undermining the chances of a peace agreement

0:05:540:05:56

with the Palestinians.

0:05:560:06:00

We have to be clear about what is happening in the West Bank.

0:06:000:06:04

The Israeli minister publicly supports a two-state solution,

0:06:040:06:08

but his current coalition

0:06:080:06:13

is the most right-wing in Israeli history,

0:06:130:06:15

with an agenda driven by the most extreme elements.

0:06:150:06:19

This was after last week's UN Security Council resolution,

0:06:190:06:23

calling for Israel to stop building Jewish homes on occupied

0:06:230:06:26

Palestinian land.

0:06:260:06:28

The US didn't use its veto power to protect Israel,

0:06:280:06:31

as it usually does.

0:06:310:06:34

And here in Israel, they're worried that in the last days

0:06:340:06:37

of the Obama administration, it could take another

0:06:370:06:40

diplomatic stand, laying out the framework for a peace deal

0:06:400:06:42

at an international conference.

0:06:420:06:44

The Palestinians might welcome that, but Israeli leaders would see it

0:06:440:06:46

as another attempt to tie the hands of Donald Trump, who's promising

0:06:460:06:49

them strong support.

0:06:490:06:53

The Israeli Prime Minister hit back at Mr Kerry

0:06:530:06:56

for his stance on settlements.

0:06:560:06:59

What he did was to spend most of his speech blaming Israel

0:06:590:07:02

for the lack of peace, by passionately condemning a policy

0:07:020:07:07

of enabling Jews to live in their historic homeland

0:07:070:07:11

and in their eternal capital, Jerusalem.

0:07:110:07:15

The Obama administration oversaw two rounds of peace talks between Israel

0:07:150:07:18

and the Palestinians.

0:07:180:07:21

Both broke down acrimoniously.

0:07:210:07:25

Now they are trying to use their final three weeks in office

0:07:250:07:28

to set a new path, but it could be too little, too late.

0:07:280:07:32

Yolande Knell, BBC News, Jerusalem.

0:07:320:07:34

A search has been called off

0:07:340:07:36

for the night for the final crew member missing at sea

0:07:360:07:39

after a fishing boat capsized off the Kent coast.

0:07:390:07:41

One person has died and another was found clinging

0:07:410:07:46

to the upturned hull - early this morning -

0:07:460:07:49

and was airlifted to hospital.

0:07:490:07:50

The boat was found 17 miles off the coast of Ramsgate.

0:07:500:07:57

More than 80 per cent of people in England,

0:07:570:07:59

aged between 40 and 60, are either overweight,

0:07:590:08:01

inactive, or drink too much.

0:08:010:08:02

That's according to Public Health England which says their lifestyles

0:08:020:08:04

are greatly increasing their risk of diseases such as diabetes.

0:08:040:08:07

Our Health Correspondent Sophie Hutchinson has more.

0:08:070:08:16

This is the trim new look of Lee Parker since exercising

0:08:160:08:18

and changing his diet.

0:08:180:08:21

A few months ago he weighed 22 stone but now he can fit

0:08:210:08:24

into one of those old trouser legs and a wake-up call came

0:08:240:08:29

when his seven-year-old son told that he loved him,

0:08:290:08:31

even though he was fat.

0:08:310:08:33

It was a case of "just order a pizza tonight",

0:08:330:08:36

we have food in but could not be bothered cooking it.

0:08:360:08:39

You just become a bit lazy and drawn out with

0:08:390:08:42

the daily grind of routine.

0:08:420:08:44

Figures show worrying trends, almost 80% of

0:08:440:08:47

women aged 40 to 60 are either overweight, obese, physically

0:08:470:08:50

inactive or drinking more than official guidelines

0:08:500:08:52

and almost 90% of men fall into the same category.

0:08:520:08:58

Amongst the health risks is diabetes,

0:08:580:09:00

it has doubled in this age group in the past 20 years and

0:09:000:09:04

treatment costs the NHS in England an estimated ?14 billion per year.

0:09:040:09:13

The reason why we're seeing these increases in chronic

0:09:130:09:17

diseases like cancer, stroke and heart disease,

0:09:170:09:21

is in a large part because of behaviour is adopted

0:09:210:09:24

during the 40 to 60 age period, so still smoking,

0:09:240:09:26

not taking enough physical activity, or drinking too much alcohol.

0:09:260:09:28

And Public Health England is offering some help.

0:09:280:09:32

This is the online health quiz that government officials

0:09:320:09:35

want 40 to 60-year-olds to take part in.

0:09:350:09:43

It is on the government website and asks

0:09:430:09:45

question about whether you are a man or woman

0:09:450:09:48

and why you might want to become more healthy.

0:09:480:09:50

It looks pretty straightforward, but the question is,

0:09:500:09:52

will it help to tackle the health crisis

0:09:520:09:54

for middle-aged people?

0:09:540:09:56

It is extremely hard, I have no willpower

0:09:560:10:01

whatsoever and life is too good and we have

0:10:010:10:03

too much choice.

0:10:030:10:04

I lead a very unhealthy lifestyle.

0:10:040:10:06

Fatty food, smoking and drinking, no exercise.

0:10:060:10:15

There is too much temptation, it is too easy to

0:10:150:10:18

go to the supermarket and buy a ready meal and put it in the

0:10:180:10:21

microwave.

0:10:210:10:22

It is not that difficult to be healthy if you put your mind

0:10:220:10:25

to it.

0:10:250:10:26

The government is hoping to nudge people into following the

0:10:260:10:33

example of Lee with attacks on sugary

0:10:330:10:35

drinks which comes in in 2018, also expected to help.

0:10:350:10:39

But many health professionals and campaigners are concerned that

0:10:390:10:41

measures still do not go far enough.
