first look at the papers over on the BBC News Channel. But | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Good evening. New tougher rules are being introduced to try to stop the | :00:00. | :00:14.
kind of lending that contributed to the recent financial crisis. It's a | :00:15. | :00:18.
move that could affect thousands of people here trying to secure a | :00:19. | :00:20.
mortgage. From midnight your lifestyle will influence the chance | :00:21. | :00:24.
of you getting a home loan, with questions being asked about spending | :00:25. | :00:26.
habits. With the details, BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson reports. | :00:27. | :00:33.
Can you really afford a mortgage? Be prepared to be asked about how much | :00:34. | :00:41.
you spend on childcare, transport, holidays, and about gambling, going | :00:42. | :00:49.
to the gym, milk deliveries and haircuts. These are the questions | :00:50. | :00:53.
which mortgage providers should ask, but how much of a change will | :00:54. | :00:58.
it be? What they are looking at now is what you can afford in two years. | :00:59. | :01:04.
It used to be very much what is your income now. They will look at what | :01:05. | :01:10.
your outgoings might be, and they will add a little on for if interest | :01:11. | :01:16.
rates rise. They will be looking at can you still afford this mortgage | :01:17. | :01:21.
in a few years. The new rules are part of the MMR, the mortgage market | :01:22. | :01:26.
review. It is all a legacy of the credit crunch, and the idea is to | :01:27. | :01:29.
try to ensure that there isn't financial crisis. Because of the | :01:30. | :01:35.
last crisis, lenders are already asking a lot more questions than | :01:36. | :01:37.
they used to. And that's without the new rules. Jade recently went to a | :01:38. | :01:44.
bank to try to get her first mortgage. She says that rather than | :01:45. | :01:49.
an interview, it ended up being more like an interrogation. They were | :01:50. | :01:54.
asking me how often I went out, how much I spend. And I thought, why do | :01:55. | :02:00.
they need to know all my personal details? But they wanted to know | :02:01. | :02:05.
even more. Gym membership, cinema, how much I spend on food. I never | :02:06. | :02:14.
had any commitments, if I went out with friends, if we detained at | :02:15. | :02:18.
home. It was crazy, they wanted to know everything. Those who work in | :02:19. | :02:24.
the mortgage business are worried about long delays and fewer loans, | :02:25. | :02:28.
but they say the new system isn't all bad news. The positive impact | :02:29. | :02:33.
will be that it will assure appropriate lending, that people are | :02:34. | :02:36.
only borrowing what they can afford to pay back. And that means being | :02:37. | :02:40.
prepared to answer a lot more questions. And deafness Sery, to | :02:41. | :02:50.
make wax. -- and if necessary, to make cutbacks. | :02:51. | :02:54.
A 30-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman have been charged in | :02:55. | :02:57.
connection with a drugs seizure in south Belfast. Herbal cannabis worth | :02:58. | :03:00.
?75,000 was found during a police search operation in the area. Both | :03:01. | :03:03.
are due to appear before Newry Magistrates Court tomorrow morning. | :03:04. | :03:06.
A deal has been tabled to buy Northern Ireland's biggest | :03:07. | :03:08.
entertainment venue, the Odyssey Pavilion in Belfast. The prospective | :03:09. | :03:11.
buyers are the cinema operators Omniplex, who say they would make it | :03:12. | :03:14.
less geared towards bars and nightclubs. Here's our business | :03:15. | :03:22.
correspondent Julian O'Neill. Pavilion part of the Odyssey has a | :03:23. | :03:28.
tag of ?10 million. This offer from Omniplex is believed to fall short | :03:29. | :03:32.
of that. But the company is also willing to commit much-needed funds | :03:33. | :03:36.
for refurbishment. The family owned Irish firm operates cinemas on both | :03:37. | :03:41.
sides of the border, and in Northern Ireland is on some thing of an | :03:42. | :03:46.
investment splurge. That could now involve a prime piece of Belfast | :03:47. | :03:51.
real estate. We want to integrate. We're not going in there just to sit | :03:52. | :03:55.
around. We want to make a move on it and make it work. The Odyssey | :03:56. | :04:00.
pavilion has been up for sale for two years, but its problems stretch | :04:01. | :04:05.
back further. In 2010 it was placed into administration. The bank | :04:06. | :04:08.
stepped in and took control because of financial problems engulfing its | :04:09. | :04:13.
original developer. The pavilion with its bars and clubs is a popular | :04:14. | :04:17.
nightspot, but it has had its share of negative headlines. The Omniplex | :04:18. | :04:23.
says it would change things. We are not in the business of nightclubs, | :04:24. | :04:26.
and we are not in the business of 2am falling out into the streets. We | :04:27. | :04:31.
want to achieve a family friendly environment. But this deal still | :04:32. | :04:36.
requires an important symmetry, the Odyssey trust, the board which | :04:37. | :04:39.
manages the entire entertainment complex, which has yet to agree to | :04:40. | :04:44.
it. A statement said the trust continues to monitor the sales | :04:45. | :04:47.
process, and it is most concerned this important element of the | :04:48. | :04:50.
Odyssey is regenerated as soon as possible. | :04:51. | :04:54.
The Odyssey trust is due to consider the offer next month. Only then will | :04:55. | :04:59.
it be known if the Odyssey's long search for a buyer is finally over. | :05:00. | :05:04.
The Police are appealing for witnesses to a hate crime in south | :05:05. | :05:09.
Belfast yesterday when a 23-year-old man was stabbed. He was attacked as | :05:10. | :05:12.
he walked into Fane Street off the Lisburn Road at around half past ten | :05:13. | :05:16.
in the morning. Two men in their twenties shouted racist abuse. One | :05:17. | :05:20.
of them then stabbed the victim in the leg. | :05:21. | :05:24.
Four men have been arrested after a series of burglaries during the | :05:25. | :05:29.
early hours of this morning. Two vehicles were stolen in separate | :05:30. | :05:31.
incidents in Summerhill Court in North Belfast and at Nutts Corner. | :05:32. | :05:35.
Other burglaries, or attempts, were made in Newtownabbey, Jordanstown | :05:36. | :05:36.
and Carrickfergus. A County Down family who have been | :05:37. | :05:45.
plagued by an infestation of rats say they're at their wits' end. | :05:46. | :05:48.
They've told BBC Newsline some of them are the size of small dogs. | :05:49. | :05:53.
There are pictures of the vermin in our next report from Mervyn Jess. | :05:54. | :06:00.
Nobody wants a wrapped in their house. The Mackenzie family have had | :06:01. | :06:06.
nearly 60 since their infestation problem began four years ago. I | :06:07. | :06:14.
said, let's get a torch. I went up to the loft, and a rat. Or a | :06:15. | :06:21.
miniature dog! I have caught 59 to date. Even the family's Jack Russell | :06:22. | :06:29.
has done her bit, but still the problem persists. Despite extensive | :06:30. | :06:37.
searches around this garden area, no obvious rat holes have been found, | :06:38. | :06:41.
so so far, the main suspect in all of this is this extension to the | :06:42. | :06:47.
house. This was built over ten years ago on top of the existing manhole | :06:48. | :06:51.
covers, and it is thought that perhaps that is how the rats are | :06:52. | :06:56.
getting in, accessing the cavity walls of the house and going up | :06:57. | :07:02.
through pipes and into the attic. The Housing executive has been out | :07:03. | :07:05.
to take a look at the problem, and in a statement it says: | :07:06. | :07:21.
And environmental health expert is due to visit the home next week as | :07:22. | :07:26.
the search for an answer to this rodent problem goes on, and all the | :07:27. | :07:29.
family can do is to continue laying track. -- traps. Tributes have been | :07:30. | :07:38.
paid to one of Glasgow Rangers' greatest ever players, who's died. | :07:39. | :07:41.
Sandy Jardine, who played over 600 times for the club, lost his battle | :07:42. | :07:45.
with cancer aged 65. He was part of the club's European triumph in 1972, | :07:46. | :07:48.
and also played 35 times for his country. He was one of the great | :07:49. | :08:01.
Rangers men. He was my hero for 35-year is. I followed Rangers all | :08:02. | :08:08.
my life. He was one of the best players I have seen. He was still | :08:09. | :08:14.
working hard for the club even when he retired. | :08:15. | :08:16.
And in football, Derry City drew 1-1 with UCD in tonight's Airtricity | :08:17. | :08:22.
Premier Division match. Now time for the weekend weather | :08:23. | :08:23.
forecast, and here's Cecilia Daly. Good evening. It is a bit of a mixed | :08:24. | :08:34.
picture this weekend. There will be some rain around, but overall, there | :08:35. | :08:38.
will be more dry weather than wet stuff. We have some rain at the | :08:39. | :08:42.
moment, and that will continue to edge its way northwards. Could be | :08:43. | :08:49.
quite heavy for a while. We are looking at some rain for a while on | :08:50. | :08:52.
Saturday morning, but don't worry, because things will improve as the | :08:53. | :08:57.
day goes on from the south. To begin with, quite cloudy and breezy, with | :08:58. | :09:00.
rain edging northwards, some of which could be quite heavy. But | :09:01. | :09:05.
brightening up a hind it, and the afternoon will be brighter with some | :09:06. | :09:09.
sunshine. There will also be some sunshine across the Irish Midlands, | :09:10. | :09:12.
in southern areas of Ireland, it will be cool , cloudy and wet. | :09:13. | :09:19.
Elsewhere across Scotland, England and Wales, it will have in very wet | :09:20. | :09:23.
through the night, and will slowly become a little drier and bright as | :09:24. | :09:27.
the day goes on, although this North Sea coast will become cold and | :09:28. | :09:33.
misty. The breeze is in the East tomorrow, with a top temperature in | :09:34. | :09:41.
the West to 15 or 16 Celsius. On Sunday, there will be a few showers | :09:42. | :09:45.
around, especially in the West, and a cool breeze against . It stays | :09:46. | :09:53.
fairly settled as we head into the new week, but it looks like the | :09:54. | :09:56.
middle part of next week will bring some further rain. | :09:57. | :09:58. |
