outing to the coast The traumatic event yesterday | :01:40. | :01:41.
evening has left a woman in Londonderry mourning | :01:42. | :01:48.
the loss of her partner, her two sons, her mother | :01:49. | :01:52.
and her teenage sister. The only survivor was her | :01:53. | :01:55.
four-month-old baby girl. The family's car slid off the pier | :01:56. | :01:59.
in Buncrana and submerged. Those who died were Sean McGrotty, | :02:00. | :02:07.

of the evening. Now, 24 hours on, there is still a sense of utter | :02:35. | :02:42.
disbelief at what has happened. Distressing scenes at the pier in | :02:43. | :02:46.
Buncrana as relatives came to lay flowers for much loved family | :02:47. | :02:50.
members. No one can quite fathom what has happened. It is believed in | :02:51. | :02:54.
the family car got into difficulty on this algae which had gathered | :02:55. | :02:58.
over the winter on the slipway. One eyewitness said the tragedy to just | :02:59. | :03:03.
heartbreaking moments to unfold, as the car accidentally entered the | :03:04. | :03:12.
water. It was in the water before we move, and the Fire Brigade and | :03:13. | :03:17.
authorities came in a flash, but they were just gone. People were | :03:18. | :03:22.
away, and we were all standing there. Another man watched in horror | :03:23. | :03:27.
as the car was submerged and recalled the dramatic rescue of a | :03:28. | :03:31.
baby girl, just four months old, by a passer-by. He was just out for a | :03:32. | :03:40.
day trip, I think, with his partner. I said, can you swim? He said, I | :03:41. | :03:48.
can. And he slipped off his underwear and headed out. At great | :03:49. | :03:52.
risk to himself, because the water was cold, and he came back in with | :03:53. | :03:57.
the baby. If he had had his clothes on he would not have made it, he | :03:58. | :04:02.
would have been weighed down. He was totally exhausted when he came back. | :04:03. | :04:06.
The Deputy First Minister today visited the scene. Earlier he had | :04:07. | :04:10.
been to see the grief stricken family, and one women whose profound | :04:11. | :04:14.
personal loss was incalculable. There are no words to sum up the | :04:15. | :04:17.
heartbreak. I have just come from meeting with the young woman has | :04:18. | :04:24.
lost her partner, her two sons, her mother and her sister. And it is a | :04:25. | :04:30.
very, very sad house. A major emergency was declared last night, | :04:31. | :04:33.
but nothing can prepare individuals for such a tragedy. You train for | :04:34. | :04:38.
this, but nothing prepares you for it. That was probably an experience, | :04:39. | :04:47.
and there are a lot of things going through their heads now. Amidst the | :04:48. | :04:50.
tragedy, there was positive news on the four-month-old baby girl who was | :04:51. | :04:57.
rescued. A bystander rescued a young baby, four-month-old baby, from the | :04:58. | :05:02.
vehicle, and that baby is now in hospital doing very well. And still | :05:03. | :05:07.
the flowers came. From a community united in sympathy and utter | :05:08. | :05:09.
disbelief. The man who rescued the four month | :05:10. | :05:15.
old baby from the sinking jeep has David Walsh was | :05:16. | :05:18.
speaking to RTE News. I looked out and I could see the | :05:19. | :05:25.
distress in the family, the father and mother and at the two touring, | :05:26. | :05:30.
all screaming, helper. So I just didn't really think. -- the two | :05:31. | :05:38.
children. I took of Michael Stone to my boxers and just swam out as fast | :05:39. | :05:43.
as I could. -- took off my clothes down to my boxers. The father was | :05:44. | :05:51.
there, the window half a jar, and he broke the window. I started | :05:52. | :05:57.
shouting, the car is going to go down, everybody please get out. The | :05:58. | :06:02.
father sat on the ledge of the window and the water started to seep | :06:03. | :06:08.
in. He then handed me the baby infant and said, take the baby. I | :06:09. | :06:14.
took the baby, and said, I want to help more people, someone else. But | :06:15. | :06:20.
the water started coming in. He just looked at me and said, save my baby. | :06:21. | :06:27.
And then I just took the baby. I held it above my head and swam back | :06:28. | :06:35.
to shore. And that is what happened. It must have been awful to leave | :06:36. | :06:39.
them behind while at the same time you were saving a life. It was | :06:40. | :06:45.
terrible. I was owed their swimming, and I didn't know how I was to help, | :06:46. | :06:51.
what was going to happen. But the baby was handed to me, and what had | :06:52. | :06:54.
happened, the father looked at me and he had to make a decision. He | :06:55. | :07:00.
could have saved himself, but he went back to his family. And I | :07:01. | :07:03.
couldn't do anything else. The car went down instantly. David Walsh | :07:04. | :07:11.
there. Word quickly spread last night about this terrible tragedy, | :07:12. | :07:15.
and it soon became clear that the victims were members of the same | :07:16. | :07:17.
family and from Derry. The Sunday afternoon drive | :07:18. | :07:23.

was in third year. They are remembering her as a | :08:12. | :08:23.
beautiful girl, a bright girl with a bright future, and also her love of | :08:24. | :08:30.
football, her love of Derry City, and at the minute they are making | :08:31. | :08:34.
remembrance bracelets and also doing red and white ribbons which we will | :08:35. | :08:38.
be wearing to her funeral in her memory. | :08:39. | :08:39.
For relatives today, there's been widespread community | :08:40. | :08:40.
I was up with the family this morning, and to lose her two | :08:41. | :08:56.
children and her husband and her mother and her sister in one tragic | :08:57. | :09:02.
accident, beyond belief. All day the grieving relatives and their friends | :09:03. | :09:05.
have been coming together for support. And they will come together | :09:06. | :09:09.
again on Thursday for a joint funeral mass for the five victims at | :09:10. | :09:10.
this church. Joining me now is the Bishop of | :09:11. | :09:27.
Derry. Can you make sense of it all? Very difficult to make sense, but it | :09:28. | :09:31.
is one of those very difficult tragedies that has happened. We have | :09:32. | :09:37.
to find a way to move on and get back to our lives here and we will | :09:38. | :09:42.
get to do that. There is a very close-knit resilient community here. | :09:43. | :09:45.
We help each other, we are good with each other and we do our best. When | :09:46. | :09:51.
the emergency is there we picked all our hearts, 107%, do what we can to | :09:52. | :09:57.
alleviate it, and we take some comfort in that. Difficult for your | :09:58. | :10:01.
members because they have got children of their own. They have, | :10:02. | :10:04.
and they relate to that, and we now have to work with those guys to help | :10:05. | :10:08.
them through this. It is a difficult time them. Nothing in comparison to | :10:09. | :10:13.
what the families of the bereaved are going through, but we have to | :10:14. | :10:16.
work with that as well and do what we can to make sense of it. You have | :10:17. | :10:23.
spoken to the families today. It is difficult, I would imagine, for any | :10:24. | :10:27.
churchman of any denomination to try to bring comfort at a time like | :10:28. | :10:31.
this. I think the one thing you try to avoid doing is saying something. | :10:32. | :10:36.
You simply stand with people, try to hear their stories. At this stage | :10:37. | :10:40.
they are still at an intermediate point. When I was there this | :10:41. | :10:45.
afternoon, the remains had not arrived home yet. It will be a | :10:46. | :10:49.
really heart-wrenching time whenever those coffins, the three children | :10:50. | :10:52.
and two adults, come into that front room. It will be a long wait for | :10:53. | :10:57.
everybody. We don't try to make sense at this stage. You simply | :10:58. | :11:02.
stand with people, listen to their stories, be available for them. You | :11:03. | :11:04.
are required if they want to be quiet. Part of my job is to support | :11:05. | :11:08.
the clergy and the parishes, because it is a huge stress and strain on | :11:09. | :11:12.
them as well will stop under pressure to see the right thing, | :11:13. | :11:16.
knowing cameras are there. But as John says, people do pull together. | :11:17. | :11:21.
There is a wonderful goodness in everyone, urban and rural, and that | :11:22. | :11:27.
will help Louise to hobble forward from this traumatic event. And with | :11:28. | :11:34.
those poignant words, Donna, it is back to you in the studio. | :11:35. | :11:42.
And many of our viewers have been sending their condolences to the | :11:43. | :11:43.
family on our Facebook page. A man has been injured | :11:44. | :11:50.

dead in Belfast city centre at the weekend has described her | :13:16. | :13:18.
as a person full of compassion and joy who had battled | :13:19. | :13:21.
addictions for years. Catherine Kenny had been sleeping | :13:22. | :13:23.
rough in a shop doorway. As Maggie Taggart reports, | :13:24. | :13:25.
her death is the fifth in the city centre involving a homeless person | :13:26. | :13:30.
since the beginning of the year. Charities have called for an urgent, | :13:31. | :13:36.
co-ordinated response to help those This was 32-year-old | :13:37. | :13:38.
Catherine Kenny some years ago. She was originally from Downpatrick, | :13:39. | :13:45.
but for the last eleven months, her family say she's been living | :13:46. | :13:48.
on the street in Belfast. Her body was found in this city | :13:49. | :13:51.
centre shop doorway on saturday. She had mental health and addiction | :13:52. | :13:54.
problems and in an interview with the Nolan Programme on BBC, | :13:55. | :13:58.
her sister said they had tried It was never enough, and that every | :13:59. | :14:21.
opportunity, she always said, see you later, and she turned and walked | :14:22. | :14:27.
to the life that she felt she had to live. | :14:28. | :14:31.
It is hostels like this one, run by the Simon Community, | :14:32. | :14:33.
which offer the hope of long term stability for homeless people | :14:34. | :14:36.
It is fully occupied at the moment, but they were trying to find her a | :14:37. | :14:43.
place and much-needed support. It is heartbreaking that she didn't get | :14:44. | :14:47.
the opportunity to come back, where even though she did have an | :14:48. | :14:50.
addiction issues, she would be able to find a safe, warm place and | :14:51. | :14:52.
support. Catherine Kenny's brother | :14:53. | :14:57.
in law told the Nolan Show he wanted her to be remembered | :14:58. | :14:59.
as a real person who was valued It is not just a dead body in the | :15:00. | :15:07.
doorway of a homeless person everybody would have walked pass | :15:08. | :15:11.
every day. As we can see from the tributes in the doorway, this girl | :15:12. | :15:12.
touched people's lives. It is hostels like this one, | :15:13. | :15:14.
run by the Simon Community, which offer the hope of long term | :15:15. | :15:16.
stability for homeless people For a person who is homeless to say, | :15:17. | :15:26.
I have mental health needs and I need support, that is a big step in | :15:27. | :15:30.
the first instance. Getting them help is a bigger step. Given the | :15:31. | :15:36.
transient nature of our service users. | :15:37. | :15:39.
Catherine's family say it looked as though she was ready | :15:40. | :15:42.
to accept that help - but it seems it all came | :15:43. | :15:44.

be called Delta 7 - of the late doctor John Hinds, | :16:09. | :16:10.
a well-known doctor in Irish motorcycling who had campaigned | :16:11. | :16:14.
for an air ambulance. Our health correspondent | :16:15. | :16:19.
Marie-Louise Connolly reports. It was a bittersweet | :16:20. | :16:24.
day for Janet Acheson. The partner of the late | :16:25. | :16:28.
Dr John Hinds, she said he'd be proud that his dream of an air | :16:29. | :16:31.
ambulance service for NI Last year for John's birthday, his | :16:32. | :16:45.
mum, Josephine, gave him this. It is a model of a helicopter, and that is | :16:46. | :16:54.
because her son John had a dream of a world leading trauma network with | :16:55. | :17:00.
a doctor led team at its core. And that is now a huge step closer to | :17:01. | :17:01.
reality. The Medical helicopter will be based | :17:02. | :17:02.
at Belfast's International Airport and operated by the Northern | :17:03. | :17:05.
Ireland Ambulance Service. A second landing station to serve | :17:06. | :17:07.
the west will be based at St Angelo Speaking publicly for the first | :17:08. | :17:10.
time, Dr Hinds' mother said she was extremely proud of her son, | :17:11. | :17:13.
and she shared with me details of the last text message | :17:14. | :17:16.
she'd sent him. The last message that I sent to John | :17:17. | :17:30.
actually was when he came back from Chicago. Don't know what time zone | :17:31. | :17:34.
you are in, but hope you had a good trip. And when I read that today, | :17:35. | :17:39.
that message still stands. I don't know what time zone he is in. I know | :17:40. | :17:42.
he has had a good trip. While there's long term funding | :17:43. | :17:44.
available, it's emerged that It is my responsibility in the | :17:45. | :17:57.
department to provide the staff to service this helicopter. The cost is | :17:58. | :18:04.
obviously going to be there in terms of running a service of this kind. | :18:05. | :18:06.
A doctor and a paramedic will be on board the helicopter, | :18:07. | :18:08.
and in John's memory it will be called Delta 7 -his own personal | :18:09. | :18:11.
call-out sign to the ambulance service. | :18:12. | :18:18.
At the weekend a welcoming party was held in south Belfast | :18:19. | :18:21.
A Belfast welcome for people who travelled thousands | :18:22. | :18:32.
Syrian families got the chance to meet other members | :18:33. | :18:40.
of the newcomer community already settled here. | :18:41. | :18:44.
For many it was their first chance to relax and chat | :18:45. | :18:47.
after the difficulties of the refugee camps. | :18:48. | :18:51.
And that was important for 18-year-old Louie. | :18:52. | :18:53.
He came here from Beruit in December. | :18:54. | :18:59.
Thank you very much, the Government and the Irish people, this beautiful | :19:00. | :19:11.

make them feel welcome, as welcome as the Irish have been made all over | :19:59. | :19:59.
the world. This group will be followed | :20:00. | :20:00.
by another 60 refugees from Syria who're arriving | :20:01. | :20:02.
in the north west next month. This weekend marks the centenary | :20:03. | :20:09.
of the Easter Rising. It is a year of significant events | :20:10. | :20:19.
in our shared history, including the Battle of the Somme in the First | :20:20. | :20:23.
World War. In a series of reports on how that is being taught to the | :20:24. | :20:27.
younger generation, our educational correspondent looks at new online | :20:28. | :20:28.
lessons. From the Easter Rising in Dublin, to | :20:29. | :20:41.
the Somme, 1916 was the year the seeds of modern Ireland were sown. | :20:42. | :20:46.
Teaching 1916 in modern style. These history teachers are learning | :20:47. | :20:48.
how to use new resources on the Rising and the Somme, | :20:49. | :20:51.
which can be sensitive topics A lot of the time they could just | :20:52. | :20:59.
hear from home. They may not be aware that some events in World War | :21:00. | :21:04.
I had both nationalists and unionists fighters involved. | :21:05. | :21:06.
In Northern Ireland, history is often still the present. | :21:07. | :21:08.
Yesterday, for instance, the Alliance leader David Ford said | :21:09. | :21:10.
he wouldn't attend an Easter Rising event in Dublin. | :21:11. | :21:14.
Pupils will obviously have been following media, and they are aware | :21:15. | :21:22.
of currently, for instance, currently politicians have been | :21:23. | :21:26.
engaging with these issues in the media as well about potentially | :21:27. | :21:29.
being invited to events or declining to attend events. | :21:30. | :21:31.
The new Understanding 1916 materials have just been produced, | :21:32. | :21:33.
but with the centenary of the Rising only days away, | :21:34. | :21:35.
We have been working on this now for a number of mothers and we believe | :21:36. | :21:45.
it is timely to present it at this particular time as we lead up to the | :21:46. | :21:51.
first of those important events from 1916. -- for a number of months. You | :21:52. | :21:57.
can get the new resources yourself on the website, but of course, our | :21:58. | :22:01.
skills aren't the only ones in Europe where teachers have to tell | :22:02. | :22:04.
pupils about controversial and contested history. | :22:05. | :22:05.
In the 90s, civil war in the former Yugoslavia tore | :22:06. | :22:07.
Some history teachers from there are currently | :22:08. | :22:10.
in Northern Ireland, and say their experience has | :22:11. | :22:12.
After the Second World War, a surgeon controversial and sensitive | :22:13. | :22:22.
issues were avoided, swept under the carpet. -- certain issues. The | :22:23. | :22:28.
conflict of the 1990s was down to these unresolved historical issues. | :22:29. | :22:29.
What's taught in class today, then, could define our future. | :22:30. | :22:33.
Stephen Watson is here with the sport - and at least | :22:34. | :22:35.
Ireland finished the Six Nations on a positive note. | :22:36. | :22:40.
Overall its been a disappointing campaign for Ireland, | :22:41. | :22:43.
but they ended the RBS Six Nations championship with a win | :22:44. | :22:46.
against Scotland and a respectable third place finish. | :22:47. | :22:50.
The game, which ended 35 points to 25 in Dublin, | :22:51. | :22:52.
also saw a remarkable landmark | :22:53. | :22:53.
No championship on the line, no wooden spoon, but the supporters of | :22:54. | :23:05.
both Ireland and Scotland arrived in Dublin hoping for a win. It was a | :23:06. | :23:11.
special day for Rory Best. For a 50th consecutive time, he plays a | :23:12. | :23:16.
game in the six Nations. With this penalty, Ireland were in complete | :23:17. | :23:23.
control will stop. Two minutes later it was all change. He wasn't going | :23:24. | :23:31.
to be stopped, and no Scotland were in charge. Although it wasn't always | :23:32. | :23:36.
reflected on the scoreboard, Ireland just did that little bit better. | :23:37. | :23:47.
Jonny Sexton was superb. That was a really tough match out there. They | :23:48. | :23:54.
kept testing is over and over again right up to the very end. Like | :23:55. | :23:57.
always there are aspects we can improve on, but I think we will | :23:58. | :24:03.
enjoy that victory, because it was hard fought, real ferocious Test | :24:04. | :24:10.
match. There was plenty of grit between the sides, but in the end it | :24:11. | :24:14.
was Irish smiles, and a third-place finish in this year's championship. | :24:15. | :24:19.
Football, and Crusaders maintained the five-point gap at the top | :24:20. | :24:22.
of the Danske Bank Premiership between themselves | :24:23. | :24:23.
The North Belfast side beat Carrick Rangers 4-0 away on Saturday | :24:24. | :24:27.
and will now face the same side again tomorrow night | :24:28. | :24:30.
with their game in hand, looking to extend the gap | :24:31. | :24:33.
Linfield were 2-0 winners away to Cliftonville, | :24:34. | :24:36.
with this fine goal by Paul Smyth sealing three points, | :24:37. | :24:40.
with a suitably spectacular goal celebration. | :24:41. | :24:42.
Cliftonville's defeat meant Glenavon moved into third spot | :24:43. | :24:44.
after Gary Hamilton's injury-time goal earned a 1-0 win over | :24:45. | :24:47.
There were mixed fortunes for the Ulster sides in yesterday's | :24:48. | :24:56.
Irish Senior Hockey Finals in Dublin. | :24:57. | :24:57.
In the women's final, the Ulster Elks successfully | :24:58. | :24:59.
defended their title, beating Ards - but Lisnagarvey were beaten | :25:00. | :25:07.
Rory McIlroy had just too much ground to make up on the final day | :25:08. | :25:13.
of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida. | :25:14. | :25:15.
But he at least had the satisfaction of a fourth | :25:16. | :25:17.
round of 65, his best score at the tournament, including this | :25:18. | :25:20.
fantastic putt on the eightteenth that left him six under overall. | :25:21. | :25:22.
In the opening round of the MotoGP, Eugene Laverty earned | :25:23. | :25:25.
four points for finishing in 12th place in Qatar. | :25:26. | :25:30.
And over 10,000 fans packed the SSE Arena over two nights to see | :25:31. | :25:33.
the Belfast Giants beat the Fife Flyers in both games | :25:34. | :25:35.
Finally, let me point you to tonight's True North | :25:36. | :25:38.
documentary, a behind-the-scenes look at Crossmaglen Gaelic | :25:39. | :25:40.
football club, filmed over the past two years - | :25:41. | :25:42.
Crossmaglen: Field Of Dreams, and it's on BBC One at 9pm. | :25:43. | :25:45.
We're also keeping an eye on the weather, and they say | :25:46. | :25:49.
The recent high pressure has given rise to some good photos like this | :25:50. | :26:01.
one. Thank you for your photographs. But unfortunately all good things | :26:02. | :26:05.
must come to an end. We have had high pressure recently keeping | :26:06. | :26:08.
things calm, but through this week the low pressure begins to move in, | :26:09. | :26:13.
and that means more unsettled for the Easter weekend. Just typical, | :26:14. | :26:18.
you have been warned. Tonight it stays dry, was of cloud around. Not | :26:19. | :26:24.
particularly called. There may be one or two spots of light rain or | :26:25. | :26:28.
drizzle. Not a lot to worry about. Similar tomorrow. A lot of cloud, | :26:29. | :26:34.
but mainly dry. Just one or two on the key areas getting spots of rain | :26:35. | :26:38.
or urges all. Most of us will stay dry. There will be some sunny gaps, | :26:39. | :26:49.
but not a lot. If you're travelling tomorrow, a similar picture right | :26:50. | :26:52.
across Britain and Ireland, high-pressure staying in control, so | :26:53. | :26:57.
largely settled but cloudy. The best chance of sunny gaps towards Easter | :26:58. | :27:00.
and areas of Britain. It is here we could see the highest temperature | :27:01. | :27:04.
is. Further west and across Ireland, a lot of cloud. To end the day | :27:05. | :27:10.
tomorrow, a lot of cloud, but it is set to stay dry. That cloud stays | :27:11. | :27:15.
overnight into Wednesday, so will not be especially cold, but it | :27:16. | :27:19.
begins to break down. We begin to see some wet weather coming in from | :27:20. | :27:21.
the Atlantic. That will stay that way as we make our way into | :27:22. | :27:29.
Wednesday. Thursday, Friday and over Easter, more unsettled weather | :27:30. | :27:30.
heading our way. That is here on BBC One. Enjoy the | :27:31. | :27:44.
rest of the | :27:45. | :27:45. |
