A man who saved a baby girl in the drowning tragedy | :00:07. | :00:14.
in County Donegal has been speaking about the frantic efforts | :00:15. | :00:16.
to try to rescue the five members of her family who died. | :00:17. | :00:21.
They were on a day out to the coast from Londonderry when their car slid | :00:22. | :00:25.
down the pier in Buncrana and submerged. | :00:26. | :00:28.
Those who lost their lives were Sean McGrotty, | :00:29. | :00:32.
his mother-in-law, Ruth Daniels, her fourteen-year-old daughter | :00:33. | :00:35.
Jodie Lee and his two sons, Mark McGrotty who was twelve | :00:36. | :00:37.
Our first report is from Keiron Tourish. | :00:38. | :00:47.
Distressing scenes at the pier in Buncrana as relatives came to lay | :00:48. | :00:50.
flowers for much loved family members. | :00:51. | :00:51.
No one can quite fathom what has happened. | :00:52. | :00:57.
It is believed in the family car got into difficulty | :00:58. | :00:59.
on this algae which had gathered over the winter on the slipway. | :01:00. | :01:02.
One eyewitness said the tragedy took just | :01:03. | :01:04.
heartbreaking moments to unfold, as the car accidentally | :01:05. | :01:06.
And it was in the water before we knew, and the Fire Brigade | :01:07. | :01:24.
came in a flash, but they were just gone. | :01:25. | :01:28.
The people were away, and we were all standing there. | :01:29. | :01:30.
Another man watched in horror as the car was submerged | :01:31. | :01:33.
and recalled the dramatic rescue of a baby girl, | :01:34. | :01:35.
just four months old, by a passer-by. | :01:36. | :01:41.
He was just out for a day trip, I think, with his partner. | :01:42. | :01:44.
And he stripped off to his underwear and headed out. | :01:45. | :01:56.
At great risk to himself, because the water | :01:57. | :01:58.
was cold, and he came back in with the baby. | :01:59. | :02:01.
If he had had his clothes on he would not have made it, | :02:02. | :02:04.
He was totally exhausted when he came back. | :02:05. | :02:07.
The Deputy First Minister today visited the scene. | :02:08. | :02:13.
Earlier he had been to see the grief stricken | :02:14. | :02:15.
family, and one women whose profound personal loss was incalculable. | :02:16. | :02:17.
There are no words to sum up the heartbreak. | :02:18. | :02:25.
I have just come from meeting with the young woman who has | :02:26. | :02:27.
lost her partner, her two sons, her mother and her sister. | :02:28. | :02:30.
A major emergency was declared last night, | :02:31. | :02:35.
but nothing can prepare individuals for such a tragedy. | :02:36. | :02:39.
You train for this, but nothing prepares you for it. | :02:40. | :02:44.
A lot of our crew have young families. | :02:45. | :02:48.
That was probably an experience, and there are a lot of things | :02:49. | :02:51.
Amidst the tragedy, there was positive news | :02:52. | :02:54.
on the four-month-old baby girl who was rescued. | :02:55. | :02:58.
A bystander rescued a young baby, four-month-old baby, | :02:59. | :03:03.
from the vehicle, and that baby is now in hospital doing very well. | :03:04. | :03:08.
From a community united in sympathy and utter disbelief. | :03:09. | :03:17.
A man who jumped into the water and rescued the four-month-old baby, | :03:18. | :03:20.
Rioghnach-Ann, has been talking about what happened. | :03:21. | :03:21.
I saw the car, and so we went down to help straightaway. | :03:22. | :03:31.
So we got out of the car, and there was a guy there, | :03:32. | :03:35.
And I was like, all right, I take my phone out, | :03:36. | :03:44.
give it my girlfriend to ring the Coast Guard. | :03:45. | :03:46.
I looked out and I could see the distress in the family, | :03:47. | :03:49.
the father and mother and the two children, | :03:50. | :03:51.
So I took off my clothes down to my boxers and just swam out | :03:52. | :03:58.
And just when I got out there, the father had the window half ajar, | :03:59. | :04:09.
and he started hitting it with his elbow to break it. | :04:10. | :04:13.
I started shouting, please, everybody | :04:14. | :04:14.
has to get out of the car, the car is going to go down, | :04:15. | :04:17.
At the stage when the windows broke, the father sat on the ledge | :04:18. | :04:23.
of the window and the water started to seep in. | :04:24. | :04:25.
He then handed me the baby infant and said, take the baby. | :04:26. | :04:30.
I took the baby, and said, someone else, | :04:31. | :04:32.
He just looked at me and said, save my baby. | :04:33. | :04:45.
I held it above my head and swam back to shore. | :04:46. | :04:52.
It must have been awful to have to leave them behind, | :04:53. | :04:59.
while at the same time you were saving a life. | :05:00. | :05:01.
I was out there swimming, and I didn't know | :05:02. | :05:06.
how I was going to help, what was going to happen. | :05:07. | :05:11.
But the baby was handed to me, and what had happened, | :05:12. | :05:13.
the father looked at me and he had to make a decision. | :05:14. | :05:16.
He could have saved himself, because he was out of the car, | :05:17. | :05:19.
I took the baby infant back to shore. | :05:20. | :05:33.
My girlfriend was waiting at the shore, | :05:34. | :05:34.
My girlfriend stripped the baby down, got her warm with the blankets | :05:35. | :05:45.
You are entered, I see. I just had to the baby's life. | :05:46. | :05:57.
You are entered, I see. I just had to get stitches on my feet. -- UART | :05:58. | :06:06.
injuried. But apart from that I am fine. Just shaken. | :06:07. | :06:12.
injuried. But apart from that I am just deal terrible I could not do | :06:13. | :06:16.
any more for the family. It is just an awful tragedy. And seeing the | :06:17. | :06:21.
actual Coast Guard and everybody work with the family. We were still | :06:22. | :06:26.
on the pier as they were coming out, and seeing how hard the Coast Guard, | :06:27. | :06:31.
everybody worked there. It was unbelievable. They spend so long | :06:32. | :06:36.
trying to resuscitate the woman and bring them all back, but it was just | :06:37. | :06:42.
so horrendous to watch it all. He was a good father. Yes, he was, | :06:43. | :06:58.
certainly. The younger child was trying to get the back of him, and I | :06:59. | :07:02.
think the father knew I was only going to be able to save one person, | :07:03. | :07:07.
and he said to me, save the baby. And he went back and stayed with his | :07:08. | :07:10.
family in the car and just disappeared. | :07:11. | :07:12.
The grieving Daniels and McGrotty families said today they had been | :07:13. | :07:16.
inundated with support from their local community | :07:17. | :07:19.
and farther afield which they "deeply appreciated". | :07:20. | :07:21.
Kevin Sharkey has spent the day in Derry. | :07:22. | :07:24.
The Sunday afternoon drive to the seaside began here, | :07:25. | :07:26.
The tragic end has left relatives heartbroken. | :07:27. | :07:34.
Love for them two kids, love for his wife, his children. | :07:35. | :07:41.
It has come as an unbelievable shock. We buried her sister eight | :07:42. | :07:55.
months ago. And my mother died about two, three years ago as well. So we | :07:56. | :07:59.
were all still basically in mourning for my sister, and this just has | :08:00. | :08:12.
devastated the whole family. Totally in shock and dismay. I don't know | :08:13. | :08:18.
how we are going to come back from this one. They just had a baby girl | :08:19. | :08:30.
as well, and thank God she survived. I want to thank the man who saved | :08:31. | :08:35.
her. I don't know your name, sir, but you are a hero in this family's | :08:36. | :08:37.
eyes. The local priest has dealt with many | :08:38. | :08:39.
tragedies in his parish Words fail me to describe the depth | :08:40. | :08:41.
of feeling, the shock. Never in all my years of priesthood | :08:42. | :08:48.
have I come across St Joseph's, St Eithnes's | :08:49. | :09:02.
and St Mary's. Pupils arriving for class | :09:03. | :09:07.
to the news that classmates At St Mary's, Jodie Lee Daniels | :09:08. | :09:09.
was in third year. They are remembering her | :09:10. | :09:15.
as a beautiful girl, a very bright girl | :09:16. | :09:25.
with a bright future. For relatives today, | :09:26. | :09:29.
there's been widespread community I was up with the family this | :09:30. | :09:30.
morning, and to lose her two children and her husband | :09:31. | :09:35.
and her mother and her sister in one All day the grieving | :09:36. | :09:38.
relatives and their friends have been coming | :09:39. | :09:45.
together for support. And they will come together again | :09:46. | :09:47.
on Thursday for a joint funeral mass for the five | :09:48. | :09:52.
victims at this church. A man was shot in front of children | :09:53. | :10:00.
leaving a primary school The gun attack was in | :10:01. | :10:03.
the Moyraverty area. The man's condition in hospital | :10:04. | :10:07.
is described as stable. Gun violence comes | :10:08. | :10:09.
to the school gates. The victim a father picking | :10:10. | :10:13.
up his child in this car. Police knew him - | :10:14. | :10:18.
he had a criminal record. His attackers also knew him, | :10:19. | :10:22.
and they knew he was coming here. Well, it couldn't have | :10:23. | :10:26.
been busier in this area It happened shortly after three | :10:27. | :10:28.
o'clock as parents were arriving Men waiting in a car fired | :10:29. | :10:33.
on the victim It's been roundly condemned | :10:34. | :10:37.
by local representatives. There were a number of children in | :10:38. | :10:50.
the area who witnessed that, and I have spoken to the family of some of | :10:51. | :10:55.
those children, and they are still crying their eyes out. Absolute | :10:56. | :11:01.
state of shock. Absolutely reprehensible, and no consideration | :11:02. | :11:04.
or thought for the nightmares now that the young children are going to | :11:05. | :11:08.
experience over the coming days and weeks. | :11:09. | :11:09.
The staff at St Brendan's have been left to pick up the pieces. | :11:10. | :11:12.
The school plans to open as normal tomorrow. | :11:13. | :11:14.
But some of its youngest pupils have witnessed what no-one | :11:15. | :11:16.
of any age should - a man with gunshot wounds | :11:17. | :11:18.
The victim is now in a stable condition in hospital. | :11:19. | :11:22.
Police want to hear from the many witnesses who were in the area | :11:23. | :11:25.
They also want information on a black BMW | :11:26. | :11:30.
they believe may have been used in the attack. | :11:31. | :11:33.
It was found on fire a few miles away in the Kilwilkie Estate. | :11:34. | :11:41.
The family of a homeless woman who died in a shop doorway | :11:42. | :11:44.
at the weekend has described her as a person of compassion and joy | :11:45. | :11:48.
who had battled addictions for years. | :11:49. | :11:51.
Catherine Kenny was 32 and originally from Downpatrick. | :11:52. | :11:56.
Her family say for the last 11 months she'd been living | :11:57. | :11:59.
A charity says it was trying to find her a hostel | :12:00. | :12:06.
It is incredibly heartbreaking she doesn't get the chance to come back. | :12:07. | :12:18.
Even though she had addiction issues, she would have had a safe | :12:19. | :12:20.
place with support and help. On tomorrow's BBC Newsline we ask | :12:21. | :12:22.
if rules should be changed to allow gay couples better access | :12:23. | :12:25.

weather forecast. The high pressure which is given us | :12:32. | :12:41.
largely settled weather over the last week or so is just clinging on | :12:42. | :12:44.
and will stay over the next day or so. But as we go through the week it | :12:45. | :12:48.
gives way to low pressure systems, just in time for the Easter weekend, | :12:49. | :12:53.
