Former US president Bill Clinton has told mourners at Martin McGuinness's | :00:00. | :00:10.
funeral that the work he started must be finished. | :00:11. | :00:14.
Londonderry came to a standstill as thousands lined the route | :00:15. | :00:16.
from his home in the Bogside to the church for this | :00:17. | :00:19.
The DUP leader was among the mourners - she was applauded | :00:20. | :00:25.
He always said his heart lay in the Bogside. | :00:26. | :00:41.
And today, Martin McGuinness made a final poignant journey | :00:42. | :00:43.
His wife, Bernie, led the mourners along with their four | :00:44. | :00:49.
children, grandchildren and wider family circle. | :00:50. | :00:54.
It was, for them, a painful path on familiar streets which held | :00:55. | :00:57.
For those who stood in silence and respect, | :00:58. | :01:01.
As the cortege set off on its journey, the huge crowds | :01:02. | :01:10.
Past well-known landmarks, the cortege edged slowly forward - | :01:11. | :01:22.
While the cortege made its way through a thronged Bogside, | :01:23. | :01:34.
Peter Robinson and his successor, Arlene Foster, were arriving at | :01:35. | :01:36.
There, too, President Bill Clinton - who received a warm welcome. | :01:37. | :01:49.
All shades of political opinion was represented - | :01:50. | :02:00.
from across the island and across the world. | :02:01. | :02:04.
A point acknowledged during Requiem Mass. | :02:05. | :02:07.
There are people here this afternoon whose presence would have | :02:08. | :02:11.
been unthinkable only a short generation ago. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Many of you here have forged a working relationship | :02:18. | :02:19.
The people here have built friendships with him. | :02:20. | :02:27.
They have occupied Stormont benches alongside him. | :02:28. | :02:33.
Some have even sat in Government with him. | :02:34. | :02:41.
And to those of you, you are very welcome. | :02:42. | :02:50.
And the presence of those political rivals and | :02:51. | :02:52.
and opponents among you who have | :02:53. | :02:54.
come to pay their respects this afternoon, you coming is the most | :02:55. | :02:59.
elegant testimony to the memory of Martin McGuinness. | :03:00. | :03:01.
Then you seek a monument for the man who brings us here, look around you. | :03:02. | :03:04.
By your presence, you are his monument. | :03:05. | :03:07.
Father Michael Canny also reflected on Martin McGuinness' violent past | :03:08. | :03:09.
I in the course of years have had many conversations with Martin, | :03:10. | :03:23.
and he knew only too well how many people struggled with his IRA past. | :03:24. | :03:26.
Republicans, we know, were not blameless, and many people | :03:27. | :03:32.
right across this community find it difficult to forgive | :03:33. | :03:34.
At the end of the service, President Bill Clinton | :03:35. | :03:38.
I came to treasure every encounter, they asked me to speak for three | :03:39. | :03:50.
minutes, he could do this in 30 seconds! | :03:51. | :03:54.
I fought, I made peace, I made politics. | :03:55. | :04:00.
I had a fabulous family that somehow stayed with me | :04:01. | :04:02.
It turned out I was pretty good at all this, and we got a lot done. | :04:03. | :04:32.
But we did not finish, and if you really wanted | :04:33. | :04:39.
to honour my legacy, finish - finish the work of peace so we can | :04:40. | :04:42.
The outpouring of grief reflected the impact | :04:43. | :04:52.
Martin McGuinness had on many present here today, but those | :04:53. | :04:55.
who suffered grievously at the hands of the IRA say their pain endures. | :04:56. | :05:03.
The Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams spoke at the graveside. | :05:04. | :05:13.
Martin McGuinness was not a terrorist. | :05:14. | :05:15.
APPLAUSE Martin McGuinness was a freedom | :05:16. | :05:33.
fighter. APPLAUSE | :05:34. | :05:44.
He was also a political prisoner and negotiator and peacemaker. | :05:45. | :05:47.
Now here's Mark Carruthers with details on The View, | :05:48. | :05:49.
Well, tonight The View is in Martin McGuinness's home city to reflect on | :05:50. | :06:00.
the complex legacy of the one-time IRA commander turned peacemaker. We | :06:01. | :06:04.
will hear from the former US President Bill Clinton on why it was | :06:05. | :06:07.
so important for him to attend today's funeral. We will also hear | :06:08. | :06:13.
the thoughts of Bertie Ahern the former Taoiseach, Alex Salmond and | :06:14. | :06:18.
Gregory Campbell, Peter Sheridan and Denis Bradley. Join me at the | :06:19. | :06:25.
slightly later time of 10:55pm, immediately after this bulletin on | :06:26. | :06:26.
BBC One. The funeral of Derry City football | :06:27. | :06:27.
team captain Ryan McBride was held earlier in the day in the same | :06:28. | :06:30.
church as Mr McGuinness's funeral. The 27-year-old was found dead | :06:31. | :06:33.
in his home on Sunday. The footballer's family and his | :06:34. | :06:45.
footballing family. At broken, by Raft, united in grief. The sudden | :06:46. | :06:50.
and unexpected death of wiring last Sunday evening -- of Ryan has | :06:51. | :07:01.
devastated his father, Lexi, and his sisters. His girlfriend, and of | :07:02. | :07:09.
course his grandparents. In recent weeks, he was scoring, cheered by | :07:10. | :07:17.
his team-mates. Today, the the player's fans saluted him in sorrow | :07:18. | :07:30.
and grief. You were a captain. Among the | :07:31. | :07:32.
mourners, Island's head of state president Michael D Higgins. The | :07:33. | :07:37.
final journey of the life and death of Ryan McBride passed through the | :07:38. | :07:39.
streets where he grew up. A service of prayer and reflection | :07:40. | :07:43.
for victims has taken place in County Fermanagh. | :07:44. | :07:46.
Relatives of people killed by the IRA, including | :07:47. | :07:47.
in the Enniskillen and Claudy bombs, took part in the service | :07:48. | :07:51.
in Lisnaskea. He will go to his grave without | :07:52. | :08:05.
telling these victims the truth on what happened. And I'd also like to | :08:06. | :08:14.
send my condolences to Martin's wife and family on behalf of the Claudy | :08:15. | :08:20.
victims. The coverage has been hard to watch. You know, my father, we | :08:21. | :08:28.
never got justice for my father. He never got to see his children | :08:29. | :08:34.
growing up. I actually had a brother that was born two weeks after my | :08:35. | :08:36.
father was shot. Good evening. Some barely stubborn | :08:37. | :08:46.
the cloud around today has been breaking up and we end up with clear | :08:47. | :08:51.
skies in places tonight. Temperatures falling away, getting | :08:52. | :08:54.
down to freezing, maybe a couple of degrees below in some rural areas, | :08:55. | :08:59.
leading to a widespread frost and mist and fog. A decent data follow | :09:00. | :09:04.
with some sunshine tomorrow. A cold start, you may have to scrape the | :09:05. | :09:08.
windscreen, pockets of freezing fog and the odd patch of eyes, hopefully | :09:09. | :09:13.
they would be lasting too long. Once the sun starts to rise they melt | :09:14. | :09:21.
away and the temperatures will rise as well. Tomorrow is looking like a | :09:22. | :09:23.
decent day across Britain and Ireland with spoils of sunshine, | :09:24. | :09:26.
with the exception of the South of England, the odd pocket of rain | :09:27. | :09:29.
here, mainly dry but with a breeze. It will feel cool and cloudy and | :09:30. | :09:33.
breezy in the far north of Scotland. For Northern Ireland, lots of | :09:34. | :09:36.
sunshine during the afternoon. By that stage it should be feeling more | :09:37. | :09:41.
springlike, with temperatures of 12 or 13 degrees. Still settled into | :09:42. | :09:44.
the weekend, fine days but chilly nights. | :09:45. | :09:46.
