First a very disturbing story and I must warn | :00:07. | :00:09.
you the following report contains upsetting details. | :00:10. | :00:13.
A court was told today about how a woman with severe learning | :00:14. | :00:17.
difficulties was kept a virtual prisoner in a house in Craigavon | :00:18. | :00:20.
and subjected to appalling sexual abuse for eight years. | :00:21. | :00:23.
That abuse was carried out by Keith Baker and his | :00:24. | :00:25.
Her plight was only discovered when another woman who lived | :00:26. | :00:31.
When the police rescued the woman just before Christmas 2012, she was | :00:32. | :00:43.
emaciated and had only one single tooth left. The only toilet she had | :00:44. | :00:48.
access to was overflowing with human waste. The woman appeared very | :00:49. | :00:53.
confused, ask how long she had been in the room she spoke in a child | :00:54. | :00:57.
like voice and did not know if it had been six or two years. She was | :00:58. | :01:03.
first brought to Northern Ireland in 2004 by Baker. Today at Craigavon | :01:04. | :01:10.
Caught the prosecuting barrister said that Keith Baker's live had | :01:11. | :01:15.
been dominated by his sexual needs and desires. Both he, in a | :01:16. | :01:19.
wheelchair, and his wife, hang their heads throughout the hearing as | :01:20. | :01:23.
graphic details were outlined of horrific sexual assaults captured on | :01:24. | :01:28.
video was shot by Keith Baker and then both he and his wife can be | :01:29. | :01:31.
seen repeatedly raping the woman over a matter of years. In the | :01:32. | :01:36.
beginning she is well nourished, by the end she is emaciated. These | :01:37. | :01:41.
houses are now occupied by people with absolutely no connection to the | :01:42. | :01:47.
Baker couple. The neighbour also has moved on but back in 2013 she was | :01:48. | :01:51.
questioned by police and she told them that in eight years of going in | :01:52. | :01:55.
and out of this house she had never once seen the woman they found on | :01:56. | :01:59.
that December night. The victim was not registered with a doctor or | :02:00. | :02:03.
whether dentist, and no benefits had ever been claimed in her name. In | :02:04. | :02:10.
2004 the husband, who also had severe learning difficulties, had | :02:11. | :02:13.
reported her missing to the police force in England. The PS and I | :02:14. | :02:17.
however had no knowledge of all contact with the woman until | :02:18. | :02:24.
December 2012 when the alarm was raised by a woman referred to by the | :02:25. | :02:31.
court only as Miss X. She lived with Baker effectively as a second wife | :02:32. | :02:35.
and was the mother of four of his eight children, Caroline Baker was | :02:36. | :02:39.
the mother of the other four. It was, the court was told, grossly | :02:40. | :02:44.
unconventional household. In the end it was Miss X raised the alarm | :02:45. | :02:47.
bringing to the end eight years of suffering for the victim and | :02:48. | :02:51.
beginning a legal process that will end when the couple sentenced next | :02:52. | :02:56.
Tuesday. Gordon Adair, BBC Newsline, Craigavon. | :02:57. | :02:59.
Discussions continued all day and into the evening as efforts | :03:00. | :03:01.
continued at Stormont to try and find a way to restore | :03:02. | :03:03.
There are just three days to go before the deadline to elect a first | :03:04. | :03:08.
and deputy first minister runs out at four o'clock on Monday afternoon. | :03:09. | :03:11.
Our political correspondent Gareth Gordon reports. | :03:12. | :03:19.
In the Stormont sunshine the people who must do the dealing could hardly | :03:20. | :03:24.
look more relaxed but appearances can be deceptive. And some distance | :03:25. | :03:31.
still remains. It always seems to come to this point, time running out | :03:32. | :03:36.
and the deadline concentrating minds. So what are the chances? I | :03:37. | :03:41.
believe that a deal is still achievable. With goodwill, good | :03:42. | :03:49.
spirits, and that positive intent. But time is short, and we must | :03:50. | :03:55.
firmly focused on those key issues to enable an executive to be formed | :03:56. | :04:03.
on Monday. We are likely to be here order into the evening, I suspect we | :04:04. | :04:07.
will be here tomorrow but do believe that the deadline of four o'clock on | :04:08. | :04:11.
Monday is not one that can be taken lightly. Some believe the odds can | :04:12. | :04:16.
only be improved by the appearance of the DUP leader at the funeral of | :04:17. | :04:22.
Martin McGuinness and the warm reception she received. Although | :04:23. | :04:27.
that alone cannot be enough. People must understand that symbolism, | :04:28. | :04:31.
while very important, only takes us so far. What need to do now is | :04:32. | :04:36.
embrace that positive spirit that we saw in Derry yesterday, and begin to | :04:37. | :04:44.
move this process forward. But there still remains a problem that | :04:45. | :04:48.
successive talks have failed to resolve, the past. The fact that the | :04:49. | :04:54.
issue has not been resolved has damaged the ability to do politics | :04:55. | :04:58.
in a broader sense here and the British government know that, that's | :04:59. | :05:01.
why we had talks, that's why we have a fresh start agreement, the British | :05:02. | :05:05.
government failed to deliver on the back of all those sets of talks. So | :05:06. | :05:09.
if you think this is a serious proposition for families and | :05:10. | :05:12.
campaign groups out there to say, let's kick the scan down the road | :05:13. | :05:15.
for another bit and see how it works out, then that is not serious | :05:16. | :05:20.
approach. So there's much to do before the parties can enjoy their | :05:21. | :05:24.
day in the sun. The potential of getting a deal by 4pm is probably | :05:25. | :05:29.
limited. The heat may be on but don't get carried away by the white | :05:30. | :05:33.
smoke yet. Gareth Gordon, BBC Newsline, Stormont. | :05:34. | :05:36.
Belfast city hall is lit up in the colours of the union flag | :05:37. | :05:39.
tonight in solidarity with the people of London | :05:40. | :05:41.
after the terrorist attack at Westminster earlier this week. | :05:42. | :05:43.
The building is awash in red, white and blue in memory | :05:44. | :05:47.
of the four people killed by a man armed with a knife who mowed down | :05:48. | :05:50.
pedestrians with his car before stabbing to death a policeman | :05:51. | :05:53.
The attacker was then shot dead by police officers. | :05:54. | :06:01.
Two teenage boys have been injured in a petrol bomb | :06:02. | :06:03.
It happened last night in the Lakelands area. | :06:04. | :06:06.
The boys were watching television in the living room | :06:07. | :06:12.
when the device was thrown through a window. | :06:13. | :06:14.
Both suffered injuries to their feet from broken glass. | :06:15. | :06:16.
The police said a group of three or four young people were seen | :06:17. | :06:19.
running away from the house after the attack. | :06:20. | :06:21.
A local Ulster Unionist MLA condemned the attack. | :06:22. | :06:25.
As it happens, the two children, although only slightly hurt and did | :06:26. | :06:31.
not receive hospital treatment last night are receiving it today. Had | :06:32. | :06:34.
they not escaped, had that fire taken hold quickly, and smoke | :06:35. | :06:38.
infiltrated the building, than those children would not have got out and | :06:39. | :06:41.
we would be looking at a murder scene and they would have to live | :06:42. | :06:44.
with that for the rest of their lives. | :06:45. | :06:46.
Football now and the Republic drew 0-0 with Wales in tonight's | :06:47. | :06:49.
There are concerns that Seamus Coleman could be out | :06:50. | :06:52.
of the game for some time following a challenge | :06:53. | :06:54.
which saw Wales reduced to ten men and the Ireland | :06:55. | :06:57.
Knowing that Serbia's 3-1 victory over Georgia today had that Serbia | :06:58. | :07:09.
top of the group and was vitally important for Martin O'Neill's site | :07:10. | :07:12.
to maintain their unbeaten Mac start to the qualifying campaign. Brian | :07:13. | :07:17.
McBride was remembered with applause before the match and also in the | :07:18. | :07:21.
fifth minute. His former Derry City team-mate James McLean wore his | :07:22. | :07:25.
number five jersey in his memory. In a very cagey first half neither | :07:26. | :07:29.
keeper was threatened, although after the interval one moment of | :07:30. | :07:32.
magic from Welsh superstar Gareth Bale almost broke the deadlock. | :07:33. | :07:37.
Wales were then reduced to ten men when Neil Taylor's reckless | :07:38. | :07:40.
challenge on Seamus Coleman merited a red card. The Irish captain was | :07:41. | :07:45.
stretchered off the pitch in obvious pain with a suspected broken leg. It | :07:46. | :07:50.
provoked a reaction from the Republic, James McLean went close | :07:51. | :07:54.
for the home side, his well struck shot deflected wide. With time | :07:55. | :07:58.
ticking down Gareth Bale almost smashed and for Wales. But both | :07:59. | :08:05.
sides had to make do with one point. Next to the Republic of Ireland, a | :08:06. | :08:10.
friendly next Tuesday against Iceland, the next qualifier will be | :08:11. | :08:14.
against Austria in June. Thomas Kane, ABC News Lang, at the Aviva | :08:15. | :08:16.
Stadium in Dublin. -- BBC Newsline. Northern Ireland will be at home | :08:17. | :08:21.
to Norway on Sunday. Now in rugby, Ulster have beat | :08:22. | :08:24.
Newport Gwent Dragons 27-17 John Andrew burrowed in for a late | :08:25. | :08:26.
try after an Ulster maul, Good evening. Lovely to see some | :08:27. | :08:40.
springlike sunshine today, more of that this weekend, high-pressure | :08:41. | :08:44.
keeping its dry. Springlike sunshine during daylight hours, the night is | :08:45. | :08:48.
still quite cold so quite a range in temperatures between day and night. | :08:49. | :08:53.
Certainly tonight with the clear skies, the temperatures are falling | :08:54. | :08:56.
down towards freezing in the towns, a couple of degrees lower than that | :08:57. | :09:00.
in the countryside, quite widespread frost and perhaps the odd pocket of | :09:01. | :09:06.
fog. Tomorrow, a fine day, dry with decent spells of | :09:07. | :09:16.
sunshine but will be a cold start and frosty early on. Once the sun | :09:17. | :09:21.
gets up it will melt but frost away. And for much of Britain and Ireland | :09:22. | :09:24.
we will be looking at a lot of fine weather with a good deal of | :09:25. | :09:26.
sunshine, still a bit breezy towards the south of England and the north | :09:27. | :09:29.
of Scotland, a bit more clout, although also mainly dry. Through | :09:30. | :09:31.
the central swathe of the country the winds are light so it will be | :09:32. | :09:35.
pleasant as those temperatures rise, eventually reaching 14 or 15 in | :09:36. | :09:39.
parts of Northern Ireland, especially towards the west and east | :09:40. | :09:46.
coast, fresher. Tomorrow night the clocks moving forward one our come | :09:47. | :09:50.
into British summer Time. After a frosty start Sunday looks like | :09:51. | :09:51.
another fine springlike day. | :09:52. | :09:57. |
