cooler through the weekend, but the weather is looking pretty good for

:00:00.:00:00.

A mother calls for the legalisation of recreational drugs after her

:00:00.:00:17.

daughter died from taking an almost pure form of ecstasy.

:00:18.:00:22.

She wanted to get high. She did not want to die.

:00:23.:00:29.

Also, fire fighters walk out the 24 hours. One crew member tells us how

:00:30.:00:34.

proposed changes would affect his life. How technology will shape the

:00:35.:00:38.

transport of the future. Vince Cable hears about driverless

:00:39.:00:43.

vehicles. With the kick off hours away, stand

:00:44.:00:47.

by for a cocktail of football and Brazilian culture.

:00:48.:00:57.

A verdict of accidental death has been recorded by a coroner

:00:58.:01:02.

in Oxford, after a 15`year`old girl died having taken ecstasy.

:01:03.:01:05.

Martha Fernback died after taking half a gram of MDMA

:01:06.:01:07.

powder in Hinksey Park in the city, in July last year.

:01:08.:01:10.

Three months ago, a 17`year`old from Botley was given

:01:11.:01:12.

a community sentence for supplying the drugs that killed her.

:01:13.:01:16.

A grieving mother's surprising message about young people

:01:17.:01:22.

Prohibition is not working, that is a certainty. This is a modern

:01:23.:01:33.

society they need to look at. Anne`Marie Coeburn lost her only

:01:34.:01:35.

child, Martha, to ecstasy last July. The 15`year`old suffered

:01:36.:01:38.

a heart attack, after taking But she didn't know it was 91%,

:01:39.:01:40.

five times normal levels. Her mum now wants some substances

:01:41.:01:49.

decriminalised, with people given access to free testing facilities

:01:50.:01:53.

which could sample the ingredients, helping people make informed

:01:54.:01:56.

decisions about taking them. I don't think anyone wants to think

:01:57.:02:06.

of their children dabbling with drugs. It is very scary. But if they

:02:07.:02:12.

are going to do it anyway, it is reassuring that from a source which

:02:13.:02:17.

can be trusted, licensed, while they are going through that phase.

:02:18.:02:23.

I am saying no parent wants your child dead.

:02:24.:02:26.

Something echoed by one of Martha's closest friends Olivia.

:02:27.:02:28.

She says drugs are now more readily available to youngsters

:02:29.:02:30.

If kids could see the danger in the drugs they have just bought, it

:02:31.:02:42.

might prevent them from taking that. And if they knew the dosages,

:02:43.:02:48.

with paracetamol, you wouldn't give a kid a packet of paracetamol and

:02:49.:02:51.

say take as many as you think necessary. Because it would be

:02:52.:02:57.

dangerous. That sort of thing should be looked at.

:02:58.:02:59.

But the Government's message today was

:03:00.:03:01.

clear, saying they want to prevent drug use in communities, ensuring

:03:02.:03:04.

The coroner said the death would act as a stark warning to other

:03:05.:03:15.

youngsters about the dangers of taking drugs, and there was no way

:03:16.:03:19.

of knowing what they were made up or, more importantly, their purity.

:03:20.:03:24.

Earlier, I spoke to Danny Kushlick from the

:03:25.:03:26.

I asked him if the legalisation of recreational drugs was ever

:03:27.:03:30.

Prohibition is so costly in health and financial and social terms.

:03:31.:03:37.

It will probably end within ten years because

:03:38.:03:40.

It is obvious it is better drugs are dealt by pharmacists and doctors,

:03:41.:03:50.

and controlled by governments, to reduce the harm caused

:03:51.:03:56.

by gangsters and unregulated dealers.

:03:57.:03:59.

Will legalising drugs stop teenagers, like Martha, dying?

:04:00.:04:03.

Presumably, there would be a minimum age to buy drugs, say, 18.

:04:04.:04:06.

But she would still be vulnerable to gangs selling

:04:07.:04:09.

The current situation in the illegal market is the only ID you need is

:04:10.:04:14.

But young people would still get hold of them.

:04:15.:04:28.

With that in mind, we know that, once they are legal,

:04:29.:04:31.

they will be quality controlled, a purity guide, a blister pack,

:04:32.:04:36.

That enables young people to be much safer when they are using in the

:04:37.:04:43.

full knowledge the reality is young people will continue to use drugs.

:04:44.:04:46.

Some might say that is encouraging people to take drugs.

:04:47.:04:48.

While they are illegal, they are discouraged.

:04:49.:04:54.

It is a fantasy to think we can really stop people using.

:04:55.:04:58.

We know millions of people use drugs in the UK and around the world.

:04:59.:05:02.

Knowing that, what we have to do is control production, the supply,

:05:03.:05:05.

and keep the people who continue to use them safe.

:05:06.:05:08.

The bottom line is dead people don't get to make choices.

:05:09.:05:13.

We have to keep people alive and healthy, the only way is

:05:14.:05:16.

Fire fighters across the region have joined the national strike

:05:17.:05:23.

They're angry about a new deal which would mean working

:05:24.:05:26.

until they're 60 which, they say, is too physically demanding.

:05:27.:05:34.

The new deal also means that, if they can't pass a fitness test

:05:35.:05:37.

in their late fifties, they could lose part of their pension.

:05:38.:05:40.

Chris has been a fire fighter for 20 years.

:05:41.:05:45.

Today, he joined his colleagues on the picket line for a 12th time,

:05:46.:05:48.

as the row with the Government over pensions continues.

:05:49.:05:50.

He is worried how the changes could affect him and his family.

:05:51.:05:54.

I now find myself in a battle of having to consider myself with

:05:55.:05:57.

a pension that doesn't afford me to live in Oxfordshire,

:05:58.:06:00.

Or even not support my children in a way I thought would be viable.

:06:01.:06:07.

The new scheme raises the pensionable age to 60.

:06:08.:06:11.

Fire fighters say, if they don't pass annual fitness

:06:12.:06:14.

tests, they face the sack and could lose out on some of their pension.

:06:15.:06:18.

There is no redeployment within the Fire Service.

:06:19.:06:21.

All the backroom jobs have already gone, this was

:06:22.:06:24.

Once you lose your fitness as a fire fighter, you have no job.

:06:25.:06:33.

A pensions expert has said similar large`scale schemes are facing

:06:34.:06:35.

Life is different to when they were set up.

:06:36.:06:39.

People are now living longer and investments aren't giving

:06:40.:06:41.

Fire officers are keen to reassure the public they will respond to any

:06:42.:06:48.

emergencies, and have contingency plans in place if something happens.

:06:49.:06:50.

If there is a serious incident that requires a lot of Fire Service

:06:51.:06:54.

resources, then we have an agreement locally with the Fire Brigades Union

:06:55.:06:58.

that their members along with non`striking staff will respond.

:06:59.:07:03.

The Government says the deal is fair, and the fire fighters have one

:07:04.:07:06.

of the most generous pensions in the public sector.

:07:07.:07:10.

With no resolution in sight, fire fighters are preparing to walk

:07:11.:07:12.

The Business Secretary Vince Cable has opened an innovation centre

:07:13.:07:21.

for smart transport technology in Milton Keynes.

:07:22.:07:27.

It aims to develop 10,000 skilled technology jobs in the UK,

:07:28.:07:30.

and could generate up to ?90 billion in annual revenue for the UK

:07:31.:07:33.

The centre will focus on developments including

:07:34.:07:35.

driverless vehicles which are due to arrive in Milton Keynes next year.

:07:36.:07:38.

From driverless cars to electric buses, Milton Keynes is often at the

:07:39.:07:43.

The perfect place to launch the industry's first innovation centre.

:07:44.:07:52.

Officially opened by Business Secretary Vince Cable this

:07:53.:07:54.

morning, it aims to bring together businesses,

:07:55.:07:56.

A collaboration Vince Cable believes would put Britain in front.

:07:57.:08:02.

There was enormous interest in British companies that can help

:08:03.:08:09.

with the urbanisation, rapid growth of cities and transport systems.

:08:10.:08:14.

We have some very good companies in the UK, and if we can capitalise

:08:15.:08:18.

on this potential for high`level employment.

:08:19.:08:19.

30 projects are already using the new facility.

:08:20.:08:28.

Live sentiment mapping has been developed, so transport

:08:29.:08:30.

see what people really think about their services.

:08:31.:08:32.

It gathers post from social media in real`time.

:08:33.:08:34.

Other products are helping predict future transport demands.

:08:35.:08:38.

This simulation shows the current aircraft movements of Europe.

:08:39.:08:45.

This demonstrates potential commuter bottlenecks.

:08:46.:08:47.

It's no accident Milton Keynes was selected as the place to

:08:48.:08:49.

We want to capture that enthusiasm, the capability of Milton Keynes,

:08:50.:08:57.

the Open University, we have Red Bull in terms of motorsport here.

:08:58.:09:01.

All great UK capability, and we want to help to harness it

:09:02.:09:08.

and develop new products that the UK can benefit from globally.

:09:09.:09:11.

The first 20 driverless pods are expected on the streets of

:09:12.:09:13.

One example of how our region is already leading the way in an

:09:14.:09:17.

industry that could be worth up to ?90 billion in less than a decade.

:09:18.:09:29.

A man has been rescued from a burning building in Bicester and

:09:30.:09:32.

Neighbours called 999 after they spotted smoke emerging

:09:33.:09:35.

The owner was unconscious, and was only found with specialist

:09:36.:09:39.

Fire fighters have reiterated the importance of having a working smoke

:09:40.:09:42.

More young people are being urged to give blood over

:09:43.:09:50.

The region's Blood and Transplant Service says, every year,

:09:51.:09:53.

more than 200,000 new donors need to be found, to replace those who

:09:54.:09:56.

Experts are worried that with the World Cup and summer holidays,

:09:57.:10:00.

the number of people giving blood will be lower than normal.

:10:01.:10:06.

We require blood transfusions for a number of reasons, cancer,

:10:07.:10:10.

So one blood donation will save three lives.

:10:11.:10:31.

:10:32.:10:36.

of passengers last year and see set as a key part of its future. ``

:10:39.:10:42.

in Reading. What's

:10:45.:10:46.

the best way to discourage the 600 Talk about lung cancer

:10:47.:10:48.

and other fatal diseases? Well, new research carried out by

:10:49.:10:53.

a Hampshire`based charity suggests I'm joined by Tony Rucinski

:10:54.:11:03.

from the Macular Society. Well, based on the findings that 90%

:11:04.:11:19.

of kids did not realise there is a direct link between smoking and

:11:20.:11:23.

psych class, and also that these kids had empathy with people who

:11:24.:11:27.

suffered macular degeneration. We fight we would do research around

:11:28.:11:31.

the fact that we need to raise awareness saw kids realise there is

:11:32.:11:35.

a direct link between smoking cigarettes and politeness that could

:11:36.:11:37.

result later. A lot of if they hear more about it. The

:11:38.:11:39.

interesting thing is kids strongly linked to blindness. How do

:11:40.:13:57.

you make the policy work? Talking to you is one of the good ways to get

:13:58.:14:00.

the message out there. Letting people know and raising the profile

:14:01.:14:04.

of the fact that even though you will not necessarily find this

:14:05.:14:06.

information on the NHS websites and information on the NHS websites and

:14:07.:14:11.

other places, it makes the ball well that smoking increases your risk of

:14:12.:14:15.

blindness in later life and nobody wants that. `` it makes you aware

:14:16.:14:19.

that. Would you go to see a West End

:14:20.:14:22.

musical in a former prison? Well, that's one

:14:23.:14:26.

of the options being put forward Those behind the proposal say

:14:27.:14:28.

the town has been culturally underserved for far too long

:14:29.:14:32.

and it needs more investment to But what will the increased

:14:33.:14:34.

competition mean for amateur groups They've rehearsed insurances and

:14:35.:14:44.

performing churches. Reading Between the Lines is a professional company

:14:45.:14:51.

without a theatre. No surprise that its director has put together

:14:52.:14:54.

proposals to build a brand`new arts Festival. It will bring cultural

:14:55.:14:59.

identity and put an end to the massive frustration that is here. We

:15:00.:15:03.

need somewhere that is outstanding in its capacity to nurture

:15:04.:15:10.

Reading's own talent. So that amateurs can feel at home as well.

:15:11.:15:14.

While outlining the vision for this, this man admitted funding is a

:15:15.:15:20.

huge obstacle. Potential investors are desperately needed and whoever

big time. `` christian bale both trod the boards. Few West End

:15:44.:15:50.

tooling companies however can perform here. We want to create a

:15:51.:15:56.

space that can house touring productions and add to the cultural

:15:57.:16:01.

offering here in the town. We wanted to be a place that will have art

:16:02.:16:05.

exhibition opportunities as well as theatre. We wanted to have a bar and

:16:06.:16:13.

cafe but we also wanted to inspire. Some smaller self`funded theatres

:16:14.:16:15.

run by volunteers have concerns, though, and not just about increased

:16:16.:16:21.

competition for audiences. We welcome anything that promotes the

:16:22.:16:24.

arts in Reading and surrounding areas. We are concerned that

:16:25.:16:29.

anything with such a sizeable interest and investment would end up

:16:30.:16:34.

compromising community interests in favour of companies that can pay and

:16:35.:16:39.

attract paying audiences. But those behind the plan insist the community

:16:40.:16:45.

will take centre stage when or if the money is found to build one.

:16:46.:16:51.

People living on a new housing development in Bracknell say

:16:52.:16:54.

contractors still haven't built the shop they promised,

:16:55.:16:56.

Well over 1,000 new homes have been built at Jennett's Park so far.

:16:57.:17:01.

But despite calls for action, a family pet has now been injured

:17:02.:17:04.

and parents are worried their children could get hurt.

:17:05.:17:06.

A new play area surrounded by parkland. This family have been

:17:07.:17:18.

shocked by the injury is Jesse here ended up with after lying on the

:17:19.:17:21.

weeds in these hidden shards of glass. Quite a lot of builder's baby

:17:30.:17:35.

the playground, nothing has been cleared up. `` builder's debris. It

:17:36.:17:41.

highlights the bigger issue is that it could have been a child. The mess

:17:42.:17:45.

around it, it could have looked neater. It is a waiting game, isn't

:17:46.:17:52.

it? We have been waiting for ages. We got the footpath opened because

:17:53.:17:55.

it was blocking a public right of way. It would be a good idea if they

:17:56.:18:00.

cleared up the surrounding area because it really needs to be made

:18:01.:18:04.

safe for children. It is not just the recreation area people are fed

:18:05.:18:08.

up about. This pile of rubble should have been transformed into a shop

:18:09.:18:12.

long ago. I have lived here for seven years and I am very frustrated

:18:13.:18:16.

that the shops of not been built but also because I cannot drive, it is

:18:17.:18:19.

difficult for me to get to the shops. They have made a lot of money

:18:20.:18:24.

out of selling houses here and have not kept their part of the bargain.

:18:25.:18:28.

This will be a wonderful development. It is almost there. But

:18:29.:18:34.

people need a shop. They need the shop finished and open. They need

:18:35.:18:39.

this area to be safe and clean and accessible to all their little ones.

:18:40.:18:45.

The council has given the consortium another three weeks to comply with

:18:46.:18:48.

the planning agreement. By the time we left today, some workers had

:18:49.:18:53.

began clearing pallets and the consortium told as plans are in

:18:54.:18:57.

place to further tend to the as a of urgency. They gauche nations about

:20:23.:20:25.

It looks pretty likely already. It is really lively. I am at a

:20:26.:20:34.

Brazilian restaurant in Southampton and they have been preparing for

:20:35.:20:38.

this for quite some time. The flags out, football is on the screen, and

they started making the drinks and I have sampled couple of them. I have

:20:43.:20:48.

got the manager, Paolo, with me. It has been busy, isn't it? It was

:20:49.:20:53.

great. We have made some noise and the World Cup started. Brazil is

:20:54.:20:58.

under pressure, isn't it? We are used to pressure and we will win the

:20:59.:21:02.

World Cup. Let's call, Brazil, let's go! There will be about 200 people

:21:03.:21:09.

watching here tonight and male is one of them. How will Brazil do?

:21:10.:21:15.

They will win because they have the best team and the other home side.

:21:16.:21:20.

How about England? I hope they get out of the qualifying stages but if

:21:21.:21:23.

they go further, I am not sure about that. Enjoy the game. Kick`off is

stay here, Tony. `` and Croatia. I think I will be joining you. Looks

that I have kept one aside for you. Excellent. Maybe I will have one

:21:48.:21:49.

later. England kick`off tomorrow night

:21:50.:21:55.

in Manaus against Italy. What are the prospects

:21:56.:21:56.

for the tournament and for Legendary Southampton boss

:21:57.:21:59.

Lawrie McMenemy was assistant manager with England as well

:22:00.:22:01.

as leading Northern Ireland and was I met up with him for

:22:02.:22:04.

a chat earlier and started by asking Video shots, Pele, the sun shining

:22:05.:22:16.

and that sort of thing. `` the yellow shirt. It is the biggest

:22:17.:22:24.

thing in football. Because it is in South America, there is a lot of

:22:25.:22:27.

unknowns about it. We do not normally play teams from they are.

:22:28.:22:35.

So it is different. What England's chances with this squad? For the

:22:36.:22:39.

first time, Tony, the English supporters will not expect to win

:22:40.:22:43.

it. That is because they know that there is only about 23% of English

:22:44.:22:48.

players in the Premiership. There are many foreign players. That

:22:49.:22:52.

helps, I think and takes pressure off. I think we will get through the

:22:53.:22:58.

opening group. If we can get to the last eight, we will have achieved

:22:59.:23:02.

something. The main thing of course is about the players and the players

:23:03.:23:08.

respect that. That is what you need. This year cautious manager with this

:23:09.:23:12.

squad of Wales, who are quite exciting, will he be more bald? ``

:23:13.:23:21.

squad of players. Everyone says do not lose a fast game. I was

:23:22.:23:26.

surprised. Spain won it four years ago and I found out they lost the
