centres to stop exploitation and abuse. They will be staffed around

:00:18.:00:23.

tonight, a police car answering an emergency call leaves a polhce

:00:24.:00:35.

officer injured and a person dead. Later on, picture perfect,

:00:36.:00:39.

generations of the South's photographic history up for sale.

:00:40.:00:52.

More details have been reve`led about specialist centres behng set

:00:53.:00:55.

up to stop the exploitation of people at risk of abuse

:00:56.:00:58.

The bases will be staffed around the clock and are being set up

:00:59.:01:02.

after a major police operathon which saw seven men convicted of sexually

:01:03.:01:05.

exploiting girls in Oxford last year. Thames Valley Police officers

:01:06.:01:07.

work alongside social workers and health professionals in Ayldsbury,

:01:08.:01:11.

Here's our political reporter, Helen C`tt.

:01:12.:01:20.

It was a case that shocked the country. Seven men convicted of

:01:21.:01:26.

grooming and abusing girls hn the heart of Oxford, but it seels the

:01:27.:01:30.

problem may be more widesprdad. Today the chief constable of Thames

:01:31.:01:35.

Valley Police, Sara Thornton, said more than 600 children had been

:01:36.:01:41.

referred to it since 2012 as being possible risk of sexual

:01:42.:01:44.

exploitation. I'm afraid thdre will always be people who want to harm

:01:45.:01:50.

children. It is our responshbility to protect them. In Oxfordshire a

:01:51.:01:56.

centre called the Kingfisher Unit was set up to allow police `nd

:01:57.:02:02.

social workers to pool information. Now they are setting up simhlar

:02:03.:02:08.

centres. Inside, police offhcers will sit alongside social workers,

:02:09.:02:14.

people from health care agencies, to try to make sure that nobodx at risk

:02:15.:02:20.

of abuse slips through the net. Some had questioned in a 17`year`old Jade

:02:21.:02:24.

and Parkinson would have bedn one of those. Homeless and vulnerable, she

:02:25.:02:30.

was murdered by her ex`boyfriend. When realised she was missing and

:02:31.:02:36.

things have happened which should not have happened, we immedhately

:02:37.:02:41.

referred it to the IPC C, which I think it's just evidence of us

:02:42.:02:47.

taking it very seriously. Wd need to look into whether we did evdrything

:02:48.:02:52.

we needed to, and that we ldarn lessons.

:02:53.:02:57.

Helen, what else did Sara Thornton have to say?

:02:58.:03:06.

Her message was positive. Crime is at its lowest level for 20 xears.

:03:07.:03:13.

But she said the force is f`cing new challenges. The number of rdports of

:03:14.:03:18.

rape have risen sharply a third on this time last year. She saxs that

:03:19.:03:23.

is partly due to historic rdports but not entirely. They'll also

:03:24.:03:26.

facing entirely new types of crime. They had to set up a special unit to

:03:27.:03:31.

deal with cyber crime, people carrying out full on full on attacks

:03:32.:03:34.

on computer servers as well as doing things like stealing credit card

:03:35.:03:38.

details online and this is `ll in the face of needing to save even

:03:39.:03:42.

more money, ?38 million in the next few years.

:03:43.:03:46.

Sara Thornton also spoke about an incident in Reading this

:03:47.:03:49.

morning in which a police c`r struck a man, killing him.

:03:50.:03:52.

The chief constable said thd crash would be taken very seriously.

:03:53.:03:56.

The focus of intense police activity, Wokingham Road was sealed

:03:57.:03:59.

off from the early hours of this morning after a police patrol car

:04:00.:04:02.

collided with a person and ` police officer while on an emergency call.

:04:03.:04:08.

The car had been sent to reports of an attempted burglary

:04:09.:04:10.

at a cycle shop near to where the collision happened.

:04:11.:04:13.

The officer was hurt and taken to hospital.

:04:14.:04:18.

His injuries are not thought to be life`threatening.

:04:19.:04:22.

My assistant chief constabld came out to deal with it as well.

:04:23.:04:30.

Police have not yet said whether the man who died was

:04:31.:04:36.

involved in the attempted btrglary people nearby had seen and heard.

:04:37.:04:43.

I was woken up by banging and scuffling, and more banging

:04:44.:04:47.

As rush`hour traffic was diverted this morning, police investhgators

:04:48.:04:53.

A police car was craned awax and the man's body was removed

:04:54.:05:00.

Stopping distances were tested with experts braking sharply,

:05:01.:05:07.

The tests appear to be simulating the manoeuvres of the policd car.

:05:08.:05:14.

The tyre marks on the road show it may havd braked

:05:15.:05:17.

Wokingham Road reopened around lunch time but detectives

:05:18.:05:22.

have continued their work hdre at the bike shop where the attdmpted

:05:23.:05:26.

That led to the report patrol car being in the area.

:05:27.:05:33.

Investigations will continud to try to work out how

:05:34.:05:35.

and why a man died as the rdsult of a police emergency call.

:05:36.:05:45.

Campaigners have lost the latest legal challenge over

:05:46.:05:47.

the Government's high`speed rail project HS2.

:05:48.:05:50.

The HS2 Action Alliance had questioned

:05:51.:05:52.

the Government's plan to stop the building of new homes along parts

:05:53.:05:56.

of the proposed route, incltding the Buckinghamshire section.

:05:57.:05:59.

The group said the plan would impact local communities, but the claim was

:06:00.:06:02.

A reward of ?3,000 is being offered for information that could help

:06:03.:06:09.

police catch the killer of ` Polish woman whose body was found

:06:10.:06:12.

Beata Bryl was beaten and her body set alight in woodland

:06:13.:06:21.

No one has been convicted for the crime.

:06:22.:06:24.

Police have re`opened the murder enquiry

:06:25.:06:37.

And are appealing to the Polish community to help find the killer.

:06:38.:06:45.

Campaigners fighting to protect a recreation ground in Faringdon

:06:46.:06:47.

from being turned into a housing development say

:06:48.:06:49.

they're angry the Secretary of State will decide whether 100 homds can be

:06:50.:06:52.

A planning application was refused last year, but following an appeal,

:06:53.:06:55.

the final decision could be made by Eric Pickles.

:06:56.:06:58.

Almost 1,000 new homes are already earmarked for Faringdon

:06:59.:07:00.

The loss of this amenity would be irrepairable.

:07:01.:07:03.

It's the only amenity of thhs type on this side of the town.

:07:04.:07:07.

It's not just local people who use it.

:07:08.:07:09.

It is of value to the entire district

:07:10.:07:13.

An Oxfordshire charity which spent ?4,000 on an evdnt to

:07:14.:07:16.

allow people to watch the ddmolition of the Didcot cooling towers has

:07:17.:07:20.

Thousands of people watched from Wittenham Clumps last lonth

:07:21.:07:25.

They were asked to donate c`sh on the day, but not enough was

:07:26.:07:30.

Now Npower has offered to reimburse the charity.

:07:31.:07:39.

In a matter of seconds, thrde giant cooling towers came crashing

:07:40.:07:45.

down. Around 3,000 people watched the spectacld

:07:46.:07:49.

The charity Earth Trust, whhch runs the site, allowed people to park in

:07:50.:07:55.

?1,800 was collected on the night but that

:07:56.:08:00.

Didcot resident Gill Suter felt compelled to help

:08:01.:08:06.

I just felt it shouldn't be right that they were having to de`l with a

:08:07.:08:19.

shortfall for it and they do such great work locally that I ddcided to

:08:20.:08:26.

set up a Just Giving page to help them re`coop with donations from the

:08:27.:08:27.

public. Earth Trust's chief executive

:08:28.:08:34.

said the charity wanted to provide a safe place where people could

:08:35.:08:37.

watch the demolition. I think we got it about right. We

:08:38.:08:46.

have never run an event of that scale in the darkness in thd early

:08:47.:08:49.

hours of the morning. There are things we have learned about the

:08:50.:08:53.

site. The lighting, for instance. It was the largest organised

:08:54.:08:56.

event on the night. South Oxfordshire District Council's

:08:57.:08:58.

already donated ?1,000. Now Npower

:08:59.:09:00.

which runs the power station has Grants more or less cover costs It

:09:01.:09:10.

means that the donations we received on the night we will be abld to use

:09:11.:09:13.

to look after this wonderful place longer term.

:09:14.:09:14.

Bookings at the trust are up and it's even considering hosting

:09:15.:09:17.

another event when the remahning towers are demolished next xear

:09:18.:09:22.

More than 3,000 athletes from 3 nations have been competing in the

:09:23.:09:28.

Wheelchair and Amputee World Junior Games at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

:09:29.:09:33.

The competitors have taken part in a range of sports including wheelchair

:09:34.:09:39.

The games are seen as a training ground

:09:40.:09:42.

for future Paralympians and a chance to celebrate Stoke Mandveille's

:09:43.:09:44.

I'll have the headlines at 8pm and a full bulletin at 10.24pm.

:09:45.:09:50.

Now more of today's stories, with Sally Taylor.

:09:51.:10:15.

The dreaded soggy bottom is something that everyone trids to

:10:16.:10:20.

avoid. Everyone's dreading having a soggy bottom!

:10:21.:10:24.

Let's join Jo Kent, who is at Cowes tonight with all

:10:25.:10:27.

the sport, including a look at some historic images

:10:28.:10:29.

from a very well known photographer on the high street in Cowes.

:10:30.:10:39.

Yes, Sally, when you say th`t it can only be one thing. Anyone who has

:10:40.:10:46.

been here will have walked past that shop, Beken, and I love white

:10:47.:10:51.

institution. More later but first, we've come down to the pontoons on

:10:52.:10:54.

the end of day five. It's fhlled up in the marina. The racing h`s just

:10:55.:11:00.

drawn to a close and within the last hour, there has been an exhhbition

:11:01.:11:06.

race for the victory class. We saw them in action a bit earlier on in

:11:07.:11:09.

the week. They're a lovely classic old wooden keelboat celebrating its

:11:10.:11:15.

80th anniversary, and they `re raising awareness about the class as

:11:16.:11:19.

a fleet that sales out of Portsmouth. It was from one extreme

:11:20.:11:23.

to the other because the big race today was the New York yacht club

:11:24.:11:27.

challenge cup contested by the big racing yachts, including sole that

:11:28.:11:30.

will be in the next round of the Volvo Ocean race. That was won by a

:11:31.:11:37.

British boat. For all of thd crews here, a familiar sight on the water

:11:38.:11:43.

will be the Beken Boat. Since 1 88 and through three generations, this

:11:44.:11:45.

family firm has been photographing life on the Solent and their

:11:46.:11:52.

photographs, including a shot of the Titanic, have made them famous right

:11:53.:11:56.

around the world. But now rdtirement and the pressures of storing and

:11:57.:12:00.

assuring `` insuring their photographs have meant that they

:12:01.:12:03.

have put their whole archivd of 1 million images up for sale stopped I

:12:04.:12:05.

had a look some of them earlier This is the view

:12:06.:12:18.

my grandfather would have h`d back in 1888 when he looked out of his

:12:19.:12:21.

bedroom window and saw the beautiful steamboats and liners and s`iling

:12:22.:12:24.

yachts going up and down thd Solent. He said, "I can't draw, I c`n't

:12:25.:12:40.

paint, so I'll capture them with My grandfather told me told me,

:12:41.:12:43.

"always photograph a yacht `s if it was your lady friend, looking

:12:44.:12:48.

its best, no wrinkles, no creases. Perhaps misbehaving a shade but not

:12:49.:12:50.

being naughty in any way at all . Frank Beken soon made a namd for

:12:51.:12:53.

himself using a self designdd camera He was going back home

:12:54.:12:57.

and said he saw this new line, out of Southampton waters and

:12:58.:13:01.

thought he would take some pictures He thought he could take sole more

:13:02.:13:04.

pictures when it came back `gain And right at the top,

:13:05.:13:08.

here is the original negative. The last picture of the Tit`nic

:13:09.:13:17.

in UK waters. That was taken by my grandf`ther

:13:18.:13:20.

in 1912. Beken has held successive

:13:21.:13:24.

Royal Warrants ` with the Duke of Edinburgh here only

:13:25.:13:26.

this week. In the '60s, Prince Philip bought

:13:27.:13:38.

Bbloodhound racing yacht In another one, you can see him

:13:39.:13:41.

with a very young Prince Ch`rles. The asking price for the Beken

:13:42.:13:45.

archive ` ?5 million. I'd like to think that the whole

:13:46.:13:52.

archive could go to a museul. If not,

:13:53.:13:55.

it could go to a private individual but I think we would insist that

:13:56.:13:58.

the archives are opened up. For 40 years, I photographed 40

:13:59.:14:02.

round the island races, 40 Cowes Weeks and eventually,

:14:03.:14:04.

you say it's time to move on Ken said he would be hanging up his

:14:05.:14:22.

camera completely. Now time for a look ahead to the football season

:14:23.:14:25.

and tonight it is the turn of Portsmouth. 15 months ago, there

:14:26.:14:29.

almost wasn't a club but like a Phoenix from the financial flames,

:14:30.:14:36.

it has risen. It's the biggdst club in League two and all of thd fans

:14:37.:14:40.

want them to win promotion. I've been talking to the manager about

:14:41.:14:41.

their chances. It's been called the Manchester

:14:42.:14:53.

United of League two. Levels of support here at Fratton park are

:14:54.:14:59.

unparalleled. When Pompey ldgend Randy Alford stepped in at the end

:15:00.:15:03.

of last season, he went on to guide them to a 13 place finish. Now

:15:04.:15:10.

expectations are high. `` Andy Alford. When I came in, we had five

:15:11.:15:19.

wins and two draws. It far dxceeded anything I thought we could do but

:15:20.:15:23.

we did it and the players dhd it and the fans did it. We all got together

:15:24.:15:29.

and made sure that that happened so the expectation level is thdre but I

:15:30.:15:34.

relish that. I actually likd that. I would rather it be that way rather

:15:35.:15:37.

than people writing us off. Off the pitch we've done very well `nd we're

:15:38.:15:41.

clearing the debt legacy as fast as we can and the guys are doing a

:15:42.:15:45.

great job in giving me the biggest budget possible to try to bd as

:15:46.:15:48.

competitive as we can offer the pitch. There have been eight new

:15:49.:15:54.

summer signings, including the top scorer at League one Walsall last

:15:55.:15:59.

season, and the former Southampton goalkeeper Michael Pope and this

:16:00.:16:01.

player from its non`league neighbours. And for the first time

:16:02.:16:06.

ever, they will have their own training base in the city. Ht's the

:16:07.:16:12.

most exciting and stable tile there has been in the last three xears.

:16:13.:16:17.

With the supports' trust holding the purse strings, things are on a much

:16:18.:16:20.

more even keel financially so what the fans really want to do this

:16:21.:16:27.

season is focus on the football Hopefully we will be pushing

:16:28.:16:29.

play`offs or maybe automatic promotion. We're building on from

:16:30.:16:35.

last season so we want to btild more chemistry. Win the league, go all

:16:36.:16:41.

the way. Why not? I wouldn't talk about promotion and play`offs now

:16:42.:16:44.

but I can guarantee that evdry time we step out on the pitch, wd'll be

:16:45.:16:48.

trying our best to get a result for the supporters who make this club

:16:49.:16:53.

tick. I have a chance to le`d this club and leave a legacy that will be

:16:54.:16:57.

fantastic, if we can look b`ck and say, "look what we achieved".

:16:58.:17:06.

Portsmouth play Exeter on S`turday. That's all the sport here btt we

:17:07.:17:10.

hope to be back tomorrow and we should have a look at the charity

:17:11.:17:15.

this year. Sorry about the break`up on the

:17:16.:17:18.

picture but I don't think it's boiled your enjoyment of wh`t was

:17:19.:17:20.

happening. A rare musical clock,

:17:21.:17:24.

thought to have belonged to Marie Antoinette, has been restordd at

:17:25.:17:27.

West Dean College in West Stssex. As Briony Leyland reports,

:17:28.:17:30.

it's one of only a handful On the table, the battered heart of

:17:31.:17:46.

a 250`year`old patient. Performing the surgery, senior conserv`tor

:17:47.:17:53.

Malcolm Archer. He's checking each one of 2486 metal pins on the barrel

:17:54.:17:56.

organ of one of the world's most precious musical clocks. We're

:17:57.:18:01.

replacing the damaged pins. Each one of these pins and bridges operate a

:18:02.:18:07.

key. Rather than a person playing an organ, this is the musician's hands,

:18:08.:18:13.

if you like, and these open keys allow air to pass through to play

:18:14.:18:18.

the pipes. The team here at the college have taken the clock to

:18:19.:18:22.

pieces in the hope it will lake music once more. Made in 1765, the

:18:23.:18:29.

clock stands at nearly eight feet when it is fully assembled. George

:18:30.:18:34.

Pike was clockmaker to his Lajesty King George III in an era when

:18:35.:18:38.

musical clocks were at the cutting edge of technology. It was the

:18:39.:18:45.

first, or a very early, forl of recorded music. Many of these

:18:46.:18:57.

mechanical organs were made for pieces that were specifically

:18:58.:19:01.

written by famous composers. So to have and owned this for people in

:19:02.:19:06.

their own home, to be able to play music by a composer automathcally,

:19:07.:19:12.

was a real status symbol. MUSIC PLAYS

:19:13.:19:20.

it is believed to marry Antoinette, the last Queen of France, mhght once

:19:21.:19:25.

have owned the clock before it found its weight to England. Now ht is

:19:26.:19:30.

owned by the Temple News collection in Leeds, where there has bden a

:19:31.:19:33.

huge fundraising effort to send it to Suffolk for conservation. That

:19:34.:19:41.

sounds terrible! That the gtilty one. They always have to be set and

:19:42.:19:50.

individually tuned. Different departments across the Colldge are

:19:51.:19:54.

working to bring the clock back to life, from storing the bellows and

:19:55.:19:57.

organ to brushing up the ornate decoration. Initially, they looked

:19:58.:20:09.

like this. So following a sdries of cleaning techniques, they wdre

:20:10.:20:15.

gradually lifted to look like that. You want to do as friendly ` clean

:20:16.:20:20.

that is not going to damage the surface. After five months of

:20:21.:20:27.

conservation, the clock is ready to be set in motion again. The bellows

:20:28.:20:31.

are pumped by a clockwork motor powered by weight. There ard eight

:20:32.:20:39.

different tunes to choose from and there is visual entertainment, too,

:20:40.:20:44.

as scenes of 18th`century lhfe move in time to the music. This tune has

:20:45.:20:51.

been identified and another was recognised by a German studdnt

:20:52.:20:54.

passing by the department as a well`known German Carol.

:20:55.:20:58.

MUSIC PLAYS This song is quite famous so I knew

:20:59.:21:08.

exactly. I said, "oh, I know this tune!" We did some research on it

:21:09.:21:15.

and we found out it was originally used in Italy. It was adaptdd by a

:21:16.:21:27.

German band and since then, it is a very famous Christmas song. Research

:21:28.:21:32.

continues to identify the shx other tracks but the clock is now ready

:21:33.:21:36.

for its journey north, wherd it will go on show in Leeds, set to please

:21:37.:21:42.

21st century crowds just as it did audiences more than 200 years ago.

:21:43.:21:47.

Now, we're hoping you might be able to do a bit of musical detective

:21:48.:21:50.

work and help identify some of the tunes the clock plays.

:21:51.:21:53.

Experts can only identify a handful so we're posting ` couple

:21:54.:21:56.

And if you recognise any, we'd love to know.

:21:57.:22:04.

You can get in touch in the usual ways.

:22:05.:22:09.

We have already received some answers.

:22:10.:22:10.

Jenni Hanney thought the first tune was Ihr Kinderlein Komlet.

:22:11.:22:15.

While Ayesha Kerr thought it was Bruderchen, Komm Tanz Mit Mhr.

:22:16.:22:29.

Your German is very good! I have German relations, who are w`tching

:22:30.:22:36.

right now because I had to call them to check! Shall we get onto the

:22:37.:22:42.

weather pictures? A bit of unsettled weather hn the
