for now. It is Hello and welcome to South Today

:00:00.:00:00.

from Oxford. A hospital launches an investigation

:00:00.:00:00.

into breast cancer screening. It's after five women given

:00:07.:00:10.

for birthday girl Daphne, An investigation has begun

:00:37.:00:42.

after five women from Oxfordshire developed breast cancer

:00:43.:00:58.

after being given the all clear A further 30 women have been

:00:59.:01:01.

contacted this week and asked to take further tests after their

:01:02.:01:06.

medical records were reviewed. 60 women have also been contacted

:01:07.:01:09.

in Buckinghamshire. NHS Trusts in Oxford

:01:10.:01:13.

and Buckinghamshire have reassured patients that their breast screening

:01:14.:01:16.

tests are reliable. In a moment, I'll be speaking to

:01:17.:01:19.

Dr Eluned Hughes of the charity First Katharine Da

:01:20.:01:22.

Costa has this report. All women aged between 50

:01:23.:01:26.

and 70 are invited for breast If any abnormalities are identified,

:01:27.:01:29.

they're called back for more tests. But in June

:01:30.:01:35.

a serious incident investigation was launched in Oxfordshire after five

:01:36.:01:38.

women who'd been given the all clear by the same doctor then went onto

:01:39.:01:42.

develop breast cancer. The concern that we have is that

:01:43.:01:46.

some tests were not carried out that might have been able to be at that

:01:47.:01:49.

time, and if they had been carried out, might

:01:50.:01:53.

have led to an earlier diagnosis. A review looked back at follow`up

:01:54.:01:57.

assessments between 2011 and 2014. more than 600 women were tested,

:01:58.:02:02.

the majority of whom were found to But further checks are being

of waiting for test results. Every time your mind is free to

:02:35.:02:38.

that unnecessarily. The women will be offered

:02:39.:02:41.

appointments next week. The Trust expects that for

:02:42.:02:43.

the majority of these women there'll We are extremely sorry for the

:02:44.:02:56.

distress that we know when announcements like this will cause,

:02:57.:03:01.

but we are very confident that the service is safe.

:03:02.:03:04.

The Trust says a recall like this is unusual.

:03:05.:03:06.

As a precaution, Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is also reviewing

:03:07.:03:08.

60 of its cases dating back to 2005 ` when the doctor at the centre

:03:09.:03:11.

No date's been set for when the investigation will report back,

:03:12.:03:16.

but the doctor has stopped carrying out assessments in the meantime.

:03:17.:03:25.

Earlier, I spoke to Dr Eluned Hughes of the charity

:03:26.:03:27.

It is obviously very worrying that the situation has occurred, and it

:03:28.:03:36.

is concerning for those 30 women who have been recalled for further

:03:37.:03:39.

tests, however, we are reassured to hear that the situation is being

:03:40.:03:43.

investigated and the women are being offered all

:03:44.:03:46.

How reliable are breast screening techniques in picking up cancer?

:03:47.:03:54.

The breast screening programme is based

:03:55.:03:56.

on the best available evidence and we know that the three yearly screen

:03:57.:03:59.

is the best method for detecting cancer early for the UK population.

:04:00.:04:05.

How possible is it the women developed cancer after

:04:06.:04:08.

We do know there are downsides to the screening, and sometimes

:04:09.:04:17.

cancer can be missed because it doesn't appear on the x`ray.

:04:18.:04:20.

Sometimes, women can develop breast cancer in that three year period.

:04:21.:04:25.

That is why it is really important that for women,

:04:26.:04:27.

even if they are attending breast screening, they still do remain

:04:28.:04:30.

breast aware and we advise women to touch, look and check for any

:04:31.:04:34.

unusual signs and go to their GP if they find anything unusual.

:04:35.:04:39.

A high percentage of cancers are picked up by checking themselves?

:04:40.:04:43.

Yes, that is right, and being breast aware and attending regular

:04:44.:04:46.

screening is very important so that if breast cancer does develop, it is

:04:47.:04:50.

The trust says it wants to be open and transparent

:04:51.:04:56.

and that is why it has come forward with the story, it will inevitably

:04:57.:04:59.

make someone anxious, how important is it that women are

:05:00.:05:03.

not put off attending mammograms or putting faith in mammograms?

:05:04.:05:07.

Breast screening is reliable and it does save lives,

:05:08.:05:10.

that is why we do recommend that women go, but it is important that

:05:11.:05:14.

they have the information about the risks and benefits

:05:15.:05:16.

This is an isolated incident and most women can be reassured

:05:17.:05:21.

A deal has been reached to take rubbish away from a fire that's been

:05:22.:05:32.

burning for three weeks at a recycling centre in Swindon.

:05:33.:05:34.

Attempts to extinguish the fire at Averies Recycling have failed `

:05:35.:05:38.

and fire crews say they need more room to operate.

:05:39.:05:41.

Swindon Borough Council's announced some of the waste will be moved once

:05:42.:05:44.

The number of young people taking up apprenticeships

:05:45.:05:50.

in Oxfordshire is up this year, bucking the national trend.

:05:51.:05:53.

And as thousands of teenagers received their A`Level results this

:05:54.:05:56.

morning, the county's first pop up apprentice shop opened in Abingdon.

:05:57.:06:00.

Managers are encouraging young people to consider apprenticeships

:06:01.:06:03.

Joy and relief for these students at Banbury Academy this morning.

:06:04.:06:13.

Straight As, three As, which is like crazy.

:06:14.:06:18.

An A`star in psychology and A`star in English and a B in philosophy.

:06:19.:06:26.

I got an A=star in English Lit, an A in English Language and a B

:06:27.:06:37.

The school had their best results to date.

:06:38.:06:39.

It's not all students that came in with high GCSE profiles

:06:40.:06:45.

Some of the students today that got an A`star or an A came to us

:06:46.:06:52.

Around 3,000 students got their results in Oxfordshire alone.

:06:53.:06:57.

There are more university places available than ever before,

:06:58.:07:01.

so people are more likely to get a place even if they haven't quite

:07:02.:07:04.

There are other options available apart from universities.

:07:05.:07:10.

Here in Abingdon, a pop`up apprentice shop.

:07:11.:07:13.

Apprenticeships can now offer equivalent training to

:07:14.:07:16.

There is a steady increase in people taking apprenticeships and

:07:17.:07:23.

that is going against the national trend, which is significant in

:07:24.:07:27.

a county like Oxfordshire which is very heavily dominated by full`time

:07:28.:07:30.

To see a shift towards apprenticeships and work`based

:07:31.:07:35.

Back in Banbury, the results are sinking in.

:07:36.:07:40.

Nationally, the pass rate might be down, but for the students, their

:07:41.:07:43.

There were delays on one of Oxford's busiest roads this afternoon

:07:44.:07:52.

14 homes were left without water after the problems

:07:53.:07:58.

The damage was repaired more quickly than expected,

:07:59.:08:02.

water has now been restored to all the homes and all traffic

:08:03.:08:05.

Thames Water are still investigating the cause of the leak.

:08:06.:08:09.

Campaigners have organised a meeting in Thame tonight against

:08:10.:08:12.

plans to build dozens of homes on fields near the town centre.

:08:13.:08:15.

Around 2,000 people have signed a petition to protect The Elms area

:08:16.:08:19.

The site was earmarked for construction in the town's

:08:20.:08:24.

neighbourhood plan, which identifies land that could be built on.

:08:25.:08:26.

Campaigners say residents are against the development even

:08:27.:08:28.

though most voted in favour of the neighbourhood plan last year.

:08:29.:08:33.

What we have found out is that most of the residents didn't quite

:08:34.:08:36.

actually understand what the consequences of this were, and now

:08:37.:08:38.

that we have marketed this to them and they now understand what is

:08:39.:08:42.

happening here, they realise that it is not what they want and they are

:08:43.:08:45.

now revolting against it and there is a lot of people saying that they

:08:46.:08:49.

People in Wiltshire are being asked if there should be restrictions on

:08:50.:09:10.

when people with free travel can use the buses. There are suggestions of

:09:11.:09:15.

keeping it until after 9am, which could end up saving millions of

:09:16.:09:16.

pounds per year. Pet owners

:09:17.:09:20.

and vets say fleas have become Mild winters and damp summers are

:09:21.:09:22.

thought to have caused the increase. Also vets say more animal owners are

:09:23.:09:26.

buying treatment products online, Just the thought of them is enough

:09:27.:09:29.

to make you want to scratch. And in Oxfordshire, pet owners

:09:30.:09:34.

are feeling increasingly itchy. Certainly, it has been

:09:35.:09:36.

a busy year on the flea front. Fleas are now an all year round

:09:37.:09:39.

problem, so we do see them through at whatever time of year it is,

:09:40.:09:42.

and this year with the warm summer, there's been a huge extra

:09:43.:09:46.

environmental burden from fleas. Treasure here is flea`free

:09:47.:09:53.

and it's largely thanks to her It is difficult to try to get rid

:09:54.:09:57.

of them all. I found that the flea bombs

:09:58.:10:02.

in carpets, it was really expensive It was just a big learning curve

:10:03.:10:06.

and it made me more vigilant. Experts at the Pest Control

:10:07.:10:12.

Association say flea eggs, which are tiny white flecks and can

:10:13.:10:14.

look like dry skin on an animal, can live in carpets for

:10:15.:10:19.

up to three years, only hatching So, if you go into a property that's

:10:20.:10:24.

been unoccupied, those flea cocoons could be set off again by the carbon

:10:25.:10:29.

dioxide in people's breath. The advice then is to seek

:10:30.:10:37.

veterinary advice and treat the site of infestations,

:10:38.:10:39.

not just the animals. That's all from me for the moment.

:10:40.:10:48.

I'll have the headlines at 8:00. Now more of today's stories

:10:49.:10:52.

with Sally Taylor. More than 15 years after

:10:53.:11:07.

a Sussex man was unlawfully killed outside a nightclub in Brighton, his

:11:08.:11:10.

brother has met the Police and Crime Commissioner for the county to seek

:11:11.:11:13.

her help in finally getting justice. Jay Abatan died from serious head

:11:14.:11:18.

injuries when he fell after being punched while waiting for a taxi but

or no one has ever been prosecuted. But the person, or people,

who punched Jay Abatan have not The 42`year`old tax specialist

on his deathbed that I was going to get justice for him, I was going

to try and get justice for him. And I've made the decision that we

:11:57.:12:00.

need to push forward now and we should not let Sussex Police

:12:01.:12:02.

hold us back any longer Two men were charged with

:12:03.:12:05.

Mr Abatan's manslaughter but the case was dropped because

:12:06.:12:13.

of a lack of evidence. One of those men, Graham Curtis,

:12:14.:12:17.

committed suicide in 2003. Three Sussex police detectives

:12:18.:12:21.

involved in the original investigation were disciplined

:12:22.:12:23.

and their units work described as a I think in cases such as this it is

:12:24.:12:27.

important that as much awareness is raised about the case and as many

:12:28.:12:36.

people as possible are aware of it and it is put out in the public

domain because the facts around it, and the fact that it has been

:12:40.:12:42.

subject to so many investigations due to internal flaws, mean that the

family needs to be given justice. I think that will have to be new

:12:46.:12:50.

and compelling evidence which is credible and very strong to

:12:51.:12:52.

start any fresh proceedings against anybody and of course anyone who is

:12:53.:12:56.

accused, who has already been acquitted, can obviously say a jury

has already found me not guilty. Sussex Police say they regret that

:15:32.:15:46.

the world of non league football tonight for a landmark moment in the

:15:47.:15:49.

history of Eastleigh football club. Tony has been to the

:15:50.:15:52.

Silverlake Stadium for tonight's roundup and sent us

:15:53.:15:55.

this report a short time ago. It is an absolutely massive night

:15:56.:16:06.

for everybody connected with this football club. It will be hosting

:16:07.:16:14.

its first ever Premier game. It started life with a 3`0 win. It is

:16:15.:16:29.

taking on Hampshire rivals. This stand was bought in from Exeter

Rugby club. The numbers will be smiling as they come in through the

:16:34.:16:37.

terraces at this season. `` numbers will be swelling. A big night for

:16:38.:16:47.

the manager and chairman. I think for the town it is amazing. It is a

:16:48.:16:54.

first for as. We have got the TV cameras here as well so it is every

:16:55.:17:00.

fan's dream tonight so we have to make the most of it. Does that bring

you a windfall? It gets you about ?7,000 are not a huge amount of

:17:07.:17:10.

money but what it does is raise the profile of the club and that is far

:17:11.:17:15.

more important so I think the money is obviously helpful but the biggest

:17:16.:17:19.

thing and the biggest challenge we have is to raise the profile of the

:17:20.:17:24.

club so it is ideal. A big step up this year. The long`term goal is to

:17:25.:17:29.

keep on rising? Absolutely. I think we are in football to be successful

:17:30.:17:36.

as same as you are in any business so very simply we have just got to

:17:37.:17:41.

keep improving year or New Year and can we get out of this league at

:17:42.:17:53.

some point, we hope so. `` improving year on year. We had a tough game on

One gay men. A big change. `` one day in. We had a lot of

:18:26.:18:36.

conversations. If we were entering into this league with players who

:18:37.:18:42.

had not played at this level before it would be different. That is why

:18:43.:18:47.

we feel we are in a position to compete rather than just make the

:18:48.:18:55.

numbers up. Anticipation builds here. Other football news: A new
