Welcome to BBC Points West with Alex Lovell and David Garmston. | :00:00. | :00:00.
A local builder fighting for his sight. | :00:07. | :00:09.
He's seriously injured after being hit in the face with a bottle | :00:10. | :00:12.
Up to her waist in mud ` a heavily pregnant woman is rescued | :00:13. | :00:49.
The fire brigade that's in the red ` Wiltshire may have to merge to | :00:50. | :00:53.
He's such a lovely person, he would never let anyone do that. It is a | :00:54. | :00:57.
terrible injury. And calling International Rescue ` | :00:58. | :00:59.
how Bristol welcomed men from Good evening ` | :01:00. | :01:01.
A fight on a nightclub dance floor has left a 23 year old Bristol | :01:02. | :01:06.
builder and local footballer, facing Sean Finnegan was smashed | :01:07. | :01:09.
in the face by a bottle as he attempted to help | :01:10. | :01:17.
his friend caught up in the brawl. Today Sean spoke of his ordeal to | :01:18. | :01:20.
our Home Affairs Correspondent, Steve Brodie. This report shows | :01:21. | :01:24.
the full extent of Sean's injuries. Sean Finnegan after being viciously | :01:25. | :01:34.
hit from behind with a bottle. It's extremely unlikely he will ever | :01:35. | :01:36.
see out of his left eye again. Today he was wheeled | :01:37. | :01:39.
from his hospital bed in Bristol's Eye Hospital to speak about trying | :01:40. | :01:42.
to stop a fight inside a nightclub. I went over to try and calm the | :01:43. | :01:55.
situation down, I felt something on the back of my head and thought I | :01:56. | :01:59.
had been punched. I cannot remember much after that. I remember the | :02:00. | :02:10.
table and chairs by the front door and blood everywhere. | :02:11. | :02:15.
The injuries to his eye have left the | :02:16. | :02:17.
Hanham Athletic footballer coming to terms that he will lose his sight. | :02:18. | :02:21.
It depends on how bad the injury is and now I healed. This is terrible, | :02:22. | :02:32.
how do you feel about it? Not too bad, it could be worse. Stuff like | :02:33. | :02:35.
this happens. It is modern day life. The unprovoked assault took place | :02:36. | :02:40.
inside the Antix nightclub on Park Street in the early hours | :02:41. | :02:42.
of Sunday morning. Sean's friends he is always the | :02:43. | :02:44.
first to think well of people and his actions here in attempting to | :02:45. | :02:47.
stop a fight were typical of him. Absolutely abhorrent. It is terrible | :02:48. | :03:02.
and we are trying to find someone to come forward so they can be charged. | :03:03. | :03:07.
You cannot get away with this stuff these days, it is terrible. | :03:08. | :03:12.
Both the police and Sean's friends are appealing anyone who saw | :03:13. | :03:14.
A 24 year old man was arrested in connection with the attack | :03:15. | :03:19.
Meanwhile Sean faces a long road to recovery. | :03:20. | :03:27.
Police in Somerset are reporting a rise in the use of the Class B | :03:28. | :03:31.
Last year they seized two and half kilos in the South and East of the | :03:32. | :03:35.
The drug is normally used as an anaesthetic for animals and can have | :03:36. | :03:41.
Our Health Correspondent, Matthew Hill reports. | :03:42. | :03:49.
Ketamine , the horse tranquiliser, is cheap and easy | :03:50. | :03:51.
Because it can be in liquid form and when we do a warrant, we cannot | :03:52. | :04:09.
potentially sees 150 bottles of liquid. Unlike powders which we | :04:10. | :04:12.
might find in bulk form or traces that we can trace back to a certain | :04:13. | :04:16.
place in the House, it is often hard place in the House, it is often hard | :04:17. | :04:18.
But it's much harder for the police, like Richard Barnett to detect. | :04:19. | :04:26.
The latest figures show that for this part | :04:27. | :04:28.
of Somerset police seized around two and a half kilograms of ketamine. | :04:29. | :04:30.
Now, that's almost three times the amount of the previous year ` | :04:31. | :04:33.
The side`effects of Cattlemen include incontinence, pain in the | :04:34. | :04:46.
bladder, blood in your you're in, and in serious cases, bladders have | :04:47. | :04:57.
to be removed. What surprises me is that they are often normal people | :04:58. | :05:03.
with jobs and families who are presenting themselves with chronic | :05:04. | :05:09.
bladder problems. Often they find the only way to cope is too can you | :05:10. | :05:27.
taking it. Ultimately, they feel it is the health issue that may deter | :05:28. | :05:28.
them more. Well, joining us in now is | :05:29. | :05:32.
Natalie Giles from Swanswell which Thank you for coming in to chat to | :05:33. | :05:43.
us. It will seem remarkable that this is something that would knock a | :05:44. | :05:49.
horse out. Why do they take it? In small amounts, it is a nice drug for | :05:50. | :05:54.
people to take. It will give them a loose `` hallucinations. They also | :05:55. | :06:04.
like it because it is a good dance drug and it is cheap. There are | :06:05. | :06:15.
multiple reasons. Do you think people know enough about the | :06:16. | :06:18.
dangers? People are increasingly using it. Yes. The reason it is | :06:19. | :06:23.
increasing is because we do not know how many users there are in south | :06:24. | :06:27.
Somerset. We have only just started to collate figures in the custody | :06:28. | :06:35.
suite. Already, there are users coming through and ex`users with | :06:36. | :06:42.
medical issues. There needs to be GP services to ask more questions about | :06:43. | :06:45.
ketamine because it is often forgotten about. People will talk | :06:46. | :06:50.
about heroin and cocaine or cannabis or ecstasy but they won't talk about | :06:51. | :06:55.
ketamine, and that needs to be done. There are devastating side`effects, | :06:56. | :06:59.
but there are psychological side`effects as well, aren't there? | :07:00. | :07:07.
If you have a bladder problem and then have to do have a colostomy bag | :07:08. | :07:12.
fitted, that will have a huge impact on your life. If people do not have | :07:13. | :07:17.
that back fitted, the people I have seen will have to use the toilet | :07:18. | :07:22.
every 20 minutes, repeatedly through the night. It will have a big | :07:23. | :07:27.
psychological effect. How do you think this message about the big | :07:28. | :07:31.
downsides can really be given to people? There needs to be a big link | :07:32. | :07:39.
up. There have been little studies but no big studies where everybody | :07:40. | :07:44.
gets together with drug and alcohol services and with people like Paul | :07:45. | :07:48.
Foster and his team at the hospital. Everybody needs to look at this | :07:49. | :07:53.
together. We have seen people dying as a result of it. Natalie, thank | :07:54. | :07:55.
you for coming to talk to us. There was another dramatic rescue | :07:56. | :07:59.
from the mudflats on the North Somerset coast yesterday ` this time | :08:00. | :08:02.
involving a heavily pregnant woman. The hovercraft was called out | :08:03. | :08:04.
in Weston`super`Mare to help two people ` | :08:05. | :08:07.
but on arrival discovered that eight were in difficulties, including the | :08:08. | :08:08.
woman who is eight months pregnant. This is | :08:09. | :08:17.
the fastest way across Weston Bay. Avon Fire Rescue's hovercraft | :08:18. | :08:24.
dances millimetres above Uniquely suited to these | :08:25. | :08:26.
treacherous sands. Where anything touching the surface | :08:27. | :08:32.
will quickly start to sink. It is right by the coastline where | :08:33. | :08:44.
you have two metres of mud. That is not easy to get in and out of and | :08:45. | :08:48.
when you are tired, people get weighed down by their clothes and | :08:49. | :08:49.
get wedged in. Yesterday | :08:50. | :08:55.
the team rescued eight people. One | :08:56. | :08:56.
a woman who was heavily pregnant. This is the only way to make | :08:57. | :08:58.
the rescues. The sinking sand out | :08:59. | :09:01.
of bounds to boats and heavy cars. This hovercraft can launch in a | :09:02. | :09:14.
couple of minutes, normally with a crew of three people. They need to | :09:15. | :09:20.
where these because the amount of sand makes it impossible to see. | :09:21. | :09:24.
Frequently it is those on holiday who fall foul of the sand. | :09:25. | :09:27.
Determined to take a paddle in the far off sea. | :09:28. | :09:29.
And there is little sympathy from locals. | :09:30. | :09:31.
I think it is down to common sense. If people are silly, they deserve | :09:32. | :09:39.
what happens to them. On Monday, I saw a couple of kids going right out | :09:40. | :09:41.
and they got right to hear. But even those used to these | :09:42. | :09:44.
beaches can get stuck sometimes. The dry sand too much | :09:45. | :09:47.
for many cars we saw today. Luckily there are plenty of amateur | :09:48. | :09:50.
rescue teams ready to lend a hand. There's lots more to come | :09:51. | :10:32.
on the programme including: hopping on the trail | :10:33. | :10:34.
of a mystery marsupial. Millions of pounds of savings need | :10:35. | :10:36.
to be made at Wiltshire Fire Service That's the warning delivered to | :10:37. | :10:39.
councillors at a meeting today, where a proposed merger with Dorset | :10:40. | :10:43.
was again being discussed. The idea is currently out | :10:44. | :10:45.
to public consultation. A decision will be made | :10:46. | :10:47.
in the Autumn. Here's our Wiltshire reporter | :10:48. | :10:49.
Will Glennon. Wiltshire firefighters still working | :10:50. | :10:53.
to put out the fire in Swindon, over a week after it started. Will the | :10:54. | :10:58.
service look the same in future? Today the councillors met to be | :10:59. | :11:01.
reminded of the stark financial picture. In two years' time, we | :11:02. | :11:06.
cease to have any reserves to cover the current deficits and we will go | :11:07. | :11:10.
into the red and that is not a viable position for any public | :11:11. | :11:14.
service, let alone one as important as a Fire and Rescue Service. | :11:15. | :11:20.
Wiltshire and Dorset have made significant cuts but more are | :11:21. | :11:23.
needed. There are three options for the future. The first two involve | :11:24. | :11:29.
Wiltshire and Dorset involving independent but sharing back office | :11:30. | :11:34.
functions like Administration and HR. The other option is for the two | :11:35. | :11:41.
Fire Services to merge to make one big fire authority, potentially with | :11:42. | :11:46.
the biggest savings. At the very most, with the back office, they can | :11:47. | :11:52.
save 800,000. We are looking for a 3.9 million shortfall, there is no | :11:53. | :11:56.
other way you can do it. You can do it with a merger and getting rid of | :11:57. | :12:01.
a whole group of senior staff, but you keep your firefighters and you | :12:02. | :12:05.
keep your fire stations. One of the MPs in Wiltshire incest that of the | :12:06. | :12:11.
two services must remain separate. `` insists. When they merge with | :12:12. | :12:22.
Gloucestershire and Haven and the whole of the South we have landed up | :12:23. | :12:27.
with something that is not bear any relation to Wiltshire. The public of | :12:28. | :12:33.
Wiltshire and Dorset are being consulted right now on what they | :12:34. | :12:38.
want for the future. We will find out in October if the merger will go | :12:39. | :12:48.
ahead. Another day and another gold for the West at the Commonwealth | :12:49. | :12:57.
Games. Today we have a gold in the shooting. He was the latest from | :12:58. | :12:59.
Glasgow. Swindon swimmer Jazz Carlin was | :13:00. | :13:08.
in tears as she collected her medal And today we have a gold | :13:09. | :13:10.
in the shooting. Ali Durden is here with all | :13:11. | :13:13.
the latest from Glasgow. The latest success has come in the | :13:14. | :13:16.
full`bore rifle individual event where David Luckman from Clifton in | :13:17. | :13:20.
Bristol has won gold this afternoon. It's his second of the games | :13:21. | :13:23.
after winning I am hearing news of another gold | :13:24. | :13:31.
medal, this one has been one by the artistic gymnasts in the team | :13:32. | :13:41.
event. They have just finished in first place, news just in, | :13:42. | :13:42.
congratulations. Well, last night belonged to Swindon | :13:43. | :13:49.
swimmer Jaz Carlin. The 23 year old missed the | :13:50. | :13:51.
London Olympics and couldn?t hold back the tears as | :13:52. | :13:53.
she collected her gold last night. The realisation was almost | :13:54. | :13:57.
too much for Jazz Carlin. The Swindon swimmer, | :13:58. | :13:59.
who represents Wales, dominated the 800 metres freestyle final ` setting | :14:00. | :14:04.
a new games record to win her gold. After missing | :14:05. | :14:09.
the Olympics with glandular fever, One to share with | :14:10. | :14:11.
the family young and old who had My family have travelled and the | :14:12. | :14:33.
support is overwhelming. It is nice for them to be here and celebrate | :14:34. | :14:37.
with me. I have put everything into my training so I am so happy to come | :14:38. | :14:43.
away with a gold. Obviously, it is all about the race tonight. | :14:44. | :14:47.
Bristol weightlifter Bradley Burrowes was another with a lot of | :14:48. | :14:49.
family support including his Dad, a former Commonwealth gold medallist. | :14:50. | :14:52.
But three failures in the clean and jerk at 155kg ended his competition. | :14:53. | :15:02.
There is only so much the body can take and I think I pushed it to the | :15:03. | :15:08.
extreme limit. I am more than capable of doing it on the right day | :15:09. | :15:14.
but unfortunately today was not it. I am glad he fulfilled his dream in | :15:15. | :15:19.
competing in a major Games. I knew that is what he wanted to be honest. | :15:20. | :15:24.
Tonight Brad will be supporting his training partner Sonny Webster as he | :15:25. | :15:27.
Also tonight ` Bitton's Siobhan`Marie O'Connor | :15:28. | :15:32.
could equal a Commonwealth Games medal`haul record if she's on the | :15:33. | :15:35.
She's already got five medals but is after a sixth in the 4 | :15:36. | :15:41.
On the track it's Lawrence Clarke's big night ` a bronze medallist four | :15:42. | :15:47.
years ago ` he goes for gold in the 110 metres hurdles. | :15:48. | :15:51.
Let's take a look at his heat this morning, qualifying comfortably | :15:52. | :15:54.
And Lawrence's University of Bath team`mate Eilidh Child was ominously | :15:55. | :16:06.
good form today ` winning her heat in the 400 metres | :16:07. | :16:09.
You can never have too many gods, keep them coming! | :16:10. | :16:37.
If you're heading off to the beach this summer ` there's a new way of | :16:38. | :16:40.
finding out how clean the sea`water is going to be, once you get there. | :16:41. | :16:44.
The campaign group, Surfers Against Sewage, hope that a | :16:45. | :16:46.
new App will help you decide where to swim, surf ` or even paddle. | :16:47. | :16:49.
These children in the rock pools at Clevedon this afternoon more | :16:50. | :16:54.
interested in what was in their nets ` than what was in the sea itself ` | :16:55. | :16:58.
At the moment, all of the beaches in our area do | :16:59. | :17:02.
meet the minimum standard for clean bathing water ` and most | :17:03. | :17:05.
Sometimes, pollutants ` including sewage ` do end up in the | :17:06. | :17:09.
sea ` and that's where it's hoped this new app will be able to help. | :17:10. | :17:13.
It's the idea of the campaign group surfers against sewage. | :17:14. | :17:15.
Until now, you were able to find out about water quality | :17:16. | :17:18.
on a few different websites ` but this one not only fits in your | :17:19. | :17:21.
pocket ` it also updates you of any changes whilst you're on the go. | :17:22. | :17:28.
There are lots of overflows around the UK so make sure you use a beach | :17:29. | :17:35.
that is covered by an app. You can be warned of where the overflows are | :17:36. | :17:37.
and how frequently it happens. But would people here | :17:38. | :17:41.
at Clevedon be interested? It tells you about lots of different | :17:42. | :17:52.
aspects of it. Not just whether it is clean but also the facilities and | :17:53. | :17:57.
the beach type. We both have iPhones and use them all the time. There are | :17:58. | :18:04.
a lot of apps that are useful. It is easy to access and better than | :18:05. | :18:06.
trying to find a book and searching for it. With the rest of the summer | :18:07. | :18:15.
looking promising, more and more us make out on this app. | :18:16. | :18:36.
Thousands of athletes from across the world are in Glasgow for the | :18:37. | :18:39.
Commonwealth Games ` but a hundred years ago people made their way to | :18:40. | :18:42.
In 1914 people from across the British Empire were called to | :18:43. | :18:46.
As part of our coverage of the centenary of the First World | :18:47. | :18:50.
War, Julia Causton has been finding out how important the Empire was to | :18:51. | :18:53.
Across the city on war memorials and on gravestones, names of | :18:54. | :18:57.
soldiers whose final resting place is far from their chosen home. | :18:58. | :19:00.
Tens of thousands of men, women and children emigrated here. When war | :19:01. | :19:06.
was declared, many of those who had emigrated and listed with the | :19:07. | :19:10.
Canadian and Australian forces in particular, but also the New | :19:11. | :19:14.
Zealanders and South Africans. They came back to defend King, country | :19:15. | :19:24.
and Empire. In the hills, thousands of Australian soldiers were treated | :19:25. | :19:29.
in a makeshift hospital which has been demolished. | :19:30. | :19:32.
The reason it was used to treat Australians was that the owner of | :19:33. | :19:41.
the property had made his fortune as a wool baron and when he retired, he | :19:42. | :19:47.
came back to Bristol and bought a splendid House here. When the war | :19:48. | :19:51.
broke out, he had the House converted in less than three weeks | :19:52. | :19:56.
into a war hospital. He wanted to treat Australian soldiers and there | :19:57. | :20:00.
were stories about him going down to Temple needs and touting for | :20:01. | :20:03.
business. `` Temple Meads. For those not lucky enough to make | :20:04. | :20:08.
it through the war, their names forever engraved | :20:09. | :20:11.
on the many memorials. I would suggest there is about 14 | :20:12. | :20:20.
like this. It is poignant with regards to the commemoration of the | :20:21. | :20:23.
First World War which is starting this year, that memorials like this | :20:24. | :20:28.
are investigated. It is not just the names on the memorial but the | :20:29. | :20:33.
stories behind the names on that memorial. Though fascinating | :20:34. | :20:39.
stories. `` there are fascinating stories. | :20:40. | :20:41.
And in the city cemeteries, yet more evidence of the role of Commonwealth | :20:42. | :20:45.
178 casualties are buried here and of those, there are six Canadians | :20:46. | :20:58.
and one Australian. This is the gravestone of Charles needs. There | :20:59. | :21:05.
is nothing on there to indicate that he was Canadian, but he was. He was | :21:06. | :21:12.
killed in a flying accident, and many members of the R FC were killed | :21:13. | :21:15.
in combat. And, | :21:16. | :21:19.
for many soldiers from the Empire, the first glimpse of the city was | :21:20. | :21:21.
a sign the nightmare was over. I thought I knew each regiment, | :21:22. | :21:29.
Battalion, Brigade, until I got to Bristol by Red Cross train. | :21:30. | :21:35.
More than 100,000 soldiers came to Bristol during World War One. | :21:36. | :21:38.
On stretchers in hospital trains, they sought solace in the city. | :21:39. | :21:40.
For others, the long journey back to their adopted nation, | :21:41. | :21:47.
To mark the declaration of World War One, a hundred years ago, | :21:48. | :22:00.
people are being asked to switch their lights off to show respect. | :22:01. | :22:03.
It's part of a campaign by the Royal British Legion, | :22:04. | :22:05.
to honour the memory of the millions who died in the conflict. | :22:06. | :22:09.
It all happens next Monday night for an hour from 10 o? clock | :22:10. | :22:13.
And if you are planning to switch lights out to mark your respect | :22:14. | :22:17.
Please let us know either by email or via our Facebook page. | :22:18. | :22:24.
Now, before we go to the weather we've been on the trail | :22:25. | :22:27.
She or he ` has been spotted at various locations in | :22:28. | :22:33.
Fiona Lamdin has trying to track it down with the help of ` yes, | :22:34. | :22:39.
Bouncing through the outback, this wallaby is lost and on the loose. | :22:40. | :22:53.
But this isn't Australia this is Wiltshire. | :22:54. | :22:56.
And with mile upon mile of roaming countryside we need pet | :22:57. | :22:59.
rescuer Dave to help track this Wiltshire wallaby. | :23:00. | :23:08.
How often do they go missing? It is the first one in three years. We | :23:09. | :23:17.
have just heard the latest sighting is a few miles away, shall we go | :23:18. | :23:19.
there? And in this small village everyone's | :23:20. | :23:22.
talking about their latest fugitive. Have you seen this Wallaby? I have | :23:23. | :23:35.
seen one like it. I have not, but I had a sighting from a customer who | :23:36. | :23:41.
had seen it in Manor Lane. What did they say? They thought it was a | :23:42. | :23:43.
kangaroo. Have you seen this Wallaby? Yes. You | :23:44. | :24:00.
have? Yes. Yesterday morning, I was driving down the road and it was | :24:01. | :24:06.
here. It followed in front of me and then shot up into the air. | :24:07. | :24:10.
But by the time Diana rang the police ` the wallaby was long gone. | :24:11. | :24:13.
Just a few miles away we went to see Russ ` somewhat of a Wallaby | :24:14. | :24:17.
He will not be happy, he will be desperate to find his mates. They | :24:18. | :24:27.
have no awareness of cars or traffic, and when they are not with | :24:28. | :24:30.
their mates, they get frantic. No`one actually knows who owns | :24:31. | :24:35.
the missing creature or of its exact whereabouts, as it | :24:36. | :24:37.
faces another night on the hop. So, are you missing a Wallaby? It is | :24:38. | :24:51.
not mine because mine is at home! As long as you have checked! He is | :24:52. | :24:56.
watching this on the sofa! Your biggest fan? My only fan! How is the | :24:57. | :25:10.
weather looking? Not too bad. Alex told me she could smell rain coming | :25:11. | :25:15.
a few minutes ago which put me in a panic! Let's hope it is not coming | :25:16. | :25:21.
because it looks like dry conditions prevailing through this evening. We | :25:22. | :25:26.
will see change coming our way by Friday onwards. Tomorrow, dry and | :25:27. | :25:32.
fairly warm. The key difference is more cloud generally across the West | :25:33. | :25:36.
Country. As things stand, we have a weak front trundling towards the | :25:37. | :25:42.
South East. There has been more cloud in many districts. There will | :25:43. | :25:48.
be a fair amount of sunny weather tomorrow but that will be in | :25:49. | :25:51.
competition with a fair amount of cloud. A benign pattern as well, and | :25:52. | :25:56.
we are not expecting any rain tonight. Things will continue into | :25:57. | :26:03.
tonight. Clear spells may mean some showery mist around. Temperatures on | :26:04. | :26:09.
par with last night at 14 or 15 Celsius being typical. Tomorrow, | :26:10. | :26:14.
some of you will be greeted by a good deal of blue sky, but as the | :26:15. | :26:19.
day wears on, the cloud cover Bills in the gaps. A light or moderate | :26:20. | :26:29.
breeze and we are not expecting any rain or showers through the course | :26:30. | :26:32.
of tomorrow. A fine day. Temperatures will be slightly down | :26:33. | :26:40.
on today. We saw 25 Celsius today but it is more likely to be 22 | :26:41. | :26:49.
tomorrow. The UV will be high tomorrow with the sun out. Friday | :26:50. | :26:56.
into Saturday, low pressure is dominating both the shape of it is | :26:57. | :27:00.
still to be determined. You get the broad pattern there. The jet stream | :27:01. | :27:07.
which has been up to the north of the UK, allowing the fair and hot, | :27:08. | :27:12.
humid conditions, is going to nosedive and followed these isobars. | :27:13. | :27:21.
The result of that, as we go through Friday and Saturday, is the chance | :27:22. | :27:25.
of showers and some will be heavy, but there will be prolonged dry | :27:26. | :27:33.
spell. Thank you, Ian, I am your biggest fan. That is about it for us | :27:34. | :27:39.
now. I you back to your Wallaby? Yes! The team is back here at 10pm | :27:40. | :27:44.
and we are back tomorrow. Bye`bye. I leave the ashram, travel halfway | :27:45. | :27:57.
across the world to find my father, Oh, well. As Vashrati says, | :27:58. | :28:01.
gotta keep smiling! We don't tend to use the bathroom | :28:02. | :28:09.
together here. All right, well, | :28:10. | :28:12.
I'll catch you later. This ashram of yours, | :28:13. | :28:13.
it might be a cult. I take it back, | :28:14. | :28:17.
he's definitely Cuckoo's son. | :28:18. | :28:22. |
