Hello and welcome to BBC Pohnts West with Alex Lovell and Will Glennon. | :00:09. | :00:11.
Taking action on the 20 year flood plan Work starts to protect villages | :00:12. | :00:15.
on the Somerset Levels and stop them from being cut`off again. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Essential flood prevention work is underway. | :00:19. | :00:22.
But local people are asking, will it actually work? | :00:23. | :00:26.
And we'll be asking a government MP whether enough is being dond. | :00:27. | :00:39.
Remembered in a rainbow of colour ` hundreds of Sam Amin's friends and | :00:40. | :00:45.
No`one had a bad word to sax about him, ever. | :00:46. | :00:53.
New hope for youngsters ` a treatment for childhood c`ncer | :00:54. | :01:00.
And the dream that survived advdrsity ` | :01:01. | :01:05.
the Bath ballet dancer back on one of the world's biggest stagds after | :01:06. | :01:08.
An international search is on for a Somali teenager from Bristol | :01:09. | :01:22.
who's left home and is known to be heading to Syria. | :01:23. | :01:26.
Avon and Somerset Police sax there are indications from that | :01:27. | :01:29.
the 15`year`old girl has bedn radicalised and that she might be | :01:30. | :01:32.
Officers say they're doing everything they can to stop | :01:33. | :01:39.
Our reporter Scott Ellis joins us now. | :01:40. | :01:42.
What do we know about the disappearance of this ghrl? | :01:43. | :01:44.
We know a last week a 15`ye`r`old girl left Bristol heading for Syria | :01:45. | :01:53.
` and that she was living hdre and was at school in the city. | :01:54. | :01:59.
The police in Bristol have confirmed that the girl has travelled as far | :02:00. | :02:05.
as Istanbul in Turkey ` and is attempting to travel on to Syria. | :02:06. | :02:10.
Of course she may have gone purely for humanitarian reasons ` to help | :02:11. | :02:13.
But given the involvement of the police both here in Bristol in | :02:14. | :02:19.
London and internationally, there is the risk that the teenage ghrl may | :02:20. | :02:22.
And Avon and Somerset Policd have said there are indicathons | :02:23. | :02:27.
You've been speaking to the Somalis today ` what have they been saying | :02:28. | :02:40.
This is a very serious issud for the Somali community in Bristol | :02:41. | :02:45.
` perhaps one of the most sdrious in a decade. | :02:46. | :02:50.
People are worried about thd safety of the teenage girl ` could she be | :02:51. | :02:53.
But also Somali parents havd asking, was she brain washed or radhcalised | :02:54. | :02:58.
` if indeed ISIS was her motive for going. | :02:59. | :03:01.
Was it by a person in the Somali community in this country ` | :03:02. | :03:05.
Certainly a matter of deep concern for Somali's living in Bristol ` | :03:06. | :03:10.
Tonight the police have said they're supporting the girl's familx ` | :03:11. | :03:15.
and are trying to find her before she crosses the border into Syria. | :03:16. | :03:25.
Work has begun to protect vhllages on the Somerset Levels | :03:26. | :03:27.
Two main roads will close for up to 11 weeks to hopeftlly | :03:28. | :03:31.
It's all part of the 20 year Somerset Flood Action | :03:32. | :03:34.
Plan, which was developed after last winter's unprecedented floods. | :03:35. | :03:36.
Here our Somerset Correspondent Clinton Rogers. | :03:37. | :03:47.
The main road through Somerset is closed for 11 weeks. | :03:48. | :03:52.
Yet for once, local people are pretty happy.. | :03:53. | :03:57.
Because all of this signals the start of major flood prdvention | :03:58. | :04:00.
work, part of a package of leasures adding up to ?10 million. | :04:01. | :04:08.
This amount of work in such a short time is unprecedentdd. | :04:09. | :04:12.
Somerset has attracted millhons of pounds historically, but never has | :04:13. | :04:15.
They're trying to prevent a repeat of this ` the worst floods on the | :04:16. | :04:24.
Thousands of acres of land underwater, | :04:25. | :04:29.
The national publicity that attracted prompted the government | :04:30. | :04:37.
They're raising the level of the road by six inches, | :04:38. | :04:49.
they hope that'll put it above future flooding. | :04:50. | :04:52.
But they're also widening the drainage channels, | :04:53. | :04:54.
so that water that does fall on the moorlands behind me can flow | :04:55. | :04:57.
There's no silver bullet th`t will stop all of the flooding | :04:58. | :05:07.
However, a number of key schemes will alleviate parts of the county | :05:08. | :05:12.
Nine months from the flooding, this man is still waiting to get | :05:13. | :05:22.
Small wonder he's cautious ` though optimistic ` about the flood | :05:23. | :05:28.
But they need to keep going, upgrading. | :05:29. | :05:38.
They're also raising one of the roads leading to Muchelney, | :05:39. | :05:44.
a community cut off for two months during the last floods. | :05:45. | :05:49.
All eyes will doubtless be on Muchelney next year to sde | :05:50. | :05:52.
Or if the village boat is pressed to service again. | :05:53. | :06:18.
Will that be out again? As xou here, we are investigating, to do with | :06:19. | :06:40.
some of this. The transport links are very welcome. We need a series | :06:41. | :06:47.
of measures, that come together to make these communities safer. Some | :06:48. | :06:55.
people still think you are not doing enough? We have got together with a | :06:56. | :07:02.
local councils, representathves to bring this plan. You have hdlp from | :07:03. | :07:14.
the local. I had the chance to talk to him. We are getting on. We cannot | :07:15. | :07:21.
promise that we will not have these extreme weather conditions `gain, | :07:22. | :07:28.
but we can promise the impact.. But you can plan for what may h`ppen | :07:29. | :07:33.
again? Absolutely. We're looking at the transport links. Many pdople | :07:34. | :07:44.
were also cut off even if they weren't direct flooded. The measures | :07:45. | :07:49.
announced today are good stdp forward. We are making progress with | :07:50. | :07:53.
the partners. Thank you. The centre | :07:54. | :08:04.
of Bath came to a standstill today as friends and family gathered | :08:05. | :08:06.
for the funeral of a young student. Around 700 people came to B`th Abbey | :08:07. | :08:09.
to hear eighteen year old S`m Amin described as a dream student, | :08:10. | :08:13.
who was full of charm. His body was found in the Rhver Avon | :08:14. | :08:15.
in Bath earlier this month. He'd disappeared | :08:16. | :08:18.
after a night out with friends. Imogen Sellers was | :08:19. | :08:20.
at today's service. The family of Sam Amin, | :08:21. | :08:24.
led by the cadet band, Inside hundreds of friends | :08:25. | :08:30.
and family ` from all over Bath all over the world ` | :08:31. | :08:37.
came to remember him. His teachers spoke | :08:38. | :08:45.
of a boy who was a dream to teach. Sam's father spoke in his n`tive | :08:46. | :08:59.
language, calling his son bx his His closest friends describdd Sam | :09:00. | :09:04.
as so popular and so cool hd could Best guy I knew. Best kid in Bath. | :09:05. | :09:30.
Such a good friend. So happx. We're young, stupid, compared to him. It | :09:31. | :09:42.
was great. I fell in a bog, up to my shoulder. Sam reached in and pulled | :09:43. | :09:46.
me out. He didn't think abott himself. | :09:47. | :09:52.
The congregation were asked to wear bright colours and light a candle | :09:53. | :09:55.
for the 18`year`old, who should have been starting university thhs week. | :09:56. | :09:59.
It was just over two weeks `go that Sam had gone out to say goodbye to | :10:00. | :10:02.
Days later his body was found in the River Avon. | :10:03. | :10:14.
Sam was one of our sons. We must honour his memory as we work | :10:15. | :10:31.
together to prevent any othdr family share this sufferings. Six len have | :10:32. | :10:38.
lost their lives. We must ndver reach seven. Sam's family nhckname | :10:39. | :10:52.
meant cloud. That cloud has drifted. But his spirit will remain. A very | :10:53. | :11:09.
warm welcome to Points West at the start of your week. We've still got | :11:10. | :11:12.
plenty more to bring you, including the weather with Jemma. We've had a | :11:13. | :11:14.
lovely September. Drier, brhghter and warmer than average. Will those | :11:15. | :11:16.
conditions continue in October? Join me to find out. | :11:17. | :11:23.
People are still counting the cost of a burst water main, which left | :11:24. | :11:26.
24,000 homes without water and damaged around 20 properties. | :11:27. | :11:28.
Water supplies have been restored to the homes in Kingswood near Bristol | :11:29. | :11:31.
` but for those whose homes were flooded, the clean`up operation is | :11:32. | :11:34.
Almost exactly four days on since the pipe burst, things are still a | :11:35. | :11:42.
The water is gone, and the water supply is back on | :11:43. | :11:48.
but for those whose homes wdre flooded, they're still trying to get | :11:49. | :11:51.
Earlier I spoke to one lady who lives here, and she was too upset | :11:52. | :12:01.
to appear on camera, but shd was keen to tell us her story. | :12:02. | :12:09.
All of a sudden, they ran up to me, and told me to have a look. | :12:10. | :12:17.
I phoned 999 and that's when they said they can't come down ydt. | :12:18. | :12:36.
They said they were worried about a gas explosion. | :12:37. | :12:43.
They were scared the water was going to come up higher. | :12:44. | :13:00.
I thought we were going to die so I text my brother | :13:01. | :13:03.
and I said tell mum and dad I love them in case anything happens. | :13:04. | :13:06.
I wanted us to be safe but H couldn't do anything. | :13:07. | :13:14.
It seemed to take ages before anyone came to rescud us | :13:15. | :13:26.
That was Beverley talking to us earlier about her experiencds | :13:27. | :13:29.
Over the weekend, the local MP for the area called for compensation | :13:30. | :13:34.
Bristol Water today confirmdd those who had lost their supply wouldn't | :13:35. | :13:41.
be compensated because the supply was back on within 48 hours, but in | :13:42. | :13:45.
a statement they said they `re talks with those people whose homds were | :13:46. | :13:49.
flooded, and they are offerhng them all the assistance thex can. | :13:50. | :14:02.
A scandal and a defection ` hardly the headlines the | :14:03. | :14:04.
Conservatives were hoping for at the start of their last party conference | :14:05. | :14:07.
But there was a glimmer of good news for the Tories from the West country | :14:08. | :14:15.
with a new poll suggesting the party would gain seats across Somdrset. | :14:16. | :14:18.
Robin Markwell reports from the Conservative Party | :14:19. | :14:20.
This had been the message the Conservatives wanted to prolote | :14:21. | :14:25.
Instead, the start of this conference became the stuff of | :14:26. | :14:28.
nightmares ` another MP defdcted to UKIP, and inside delegates pondered | :14:29. | :14:32.
Keen to swear allegiance to his leader is this Somerset MP. | :14:33. | :14:42.
He denies rumours in the prdss that he might be about to switch sides. | :14:43. | :14:47.
I think Nigel Farage is a very capable of leading UKIP. | :14:48. | :14:51.
He is a very charismatic politician, and he has managed to set | :14:52. | :14:54.
He's also keeping the suspense going, with | :14:55. | :14:59.
Today the Conservatives tridd to regain the initiative. | :15:00. | :15:11.
Crowds gathered to hear the Chancellor announcing new policy. | :15:12. | :15:17.
And cheery news for Conserv`tives in the West Country. | :15:18. | :15:20.
A poll by Lord Ashcroft suggested the Conservatives would ste`l | :15:21. | :15:23.
These places would all switch from yellow to blue. | :15:24. | :15:33.
The survey was welcomed by fresh faces of the party. | :15:34. | :15:40.
The coalition marriage now slipping to divorce? | :15:41. | :15:44.
It's clear that what's being offered after the next general election is | :15:45. | :15:47.
a very different message about how this country could be | :15:48. | :15:49.
The Lib Dems are saying thex'll tax your family home, | :15:50. | :15:52.
The Conservatives stand for something different. | :15:53. | :16:03.
The mood music in Westminster is changing. | :16:04. | :16:07.
Two parties ` once friends ` now in full`on battle mode, both knowing in | :16:08. | :16:10.
A new childhood cancer treatment, which has been a big success | :16:11. | :16:24.
in America, is coming to Brhstol for its UK trial. | :16:25. | :16:26.
One hospital in the States said previously none of its patidnts | :16:27. | :16:29.
survived when they had a relapse of the cancer neuroblastoma. | :16:30. | :16:31.
With the new treatment, three quarters of them survhved | :16:32. | :16:34.
In a moment we'll speak to the Bristol doctor who'll bd running | :16:35. | :16:36.
First Andy Howard reports on one little girl who's benefited | :16:37. | :16:40.
She's four years old and generally a happy littld soul. | :16:41. | :16:49.
But the fact she's alive is a miracle. | :16:50. | :16:51.
As a baby, she had cancer, called neuroblastoma. | :16:52. | :16:53.
Three years ago, doctors told her parents there was nothing | :16:54. | :16:56.
You can see how veined her stomach was. | :16:57. | :17:05.
She was completely covered in floating tumours. | :17:06. | :17:13.
We were taken to an office, told to take some pictures, make thd best | :17:14. | :17:21.
I sat on my stairs and I screamed, "I'll research it on the internet | :17:22. | :17:26.
And granny's laptop found a hospital in America. | :17:27. | :17:35.
It was offering a trial of a new drug. | :17:36. | :17:38.
Treatment would cost more than ?1 million. | :17:39. | :17:43.
But it was raised entirely by charity. | :17:44. | :17:47.
But getting every sick child to America for the treatment | :17:48. | :18:08.
So the plan now is for the drug which is designed to teach | :18:09. | :18:14.
the body to destroy cancer, to come to the UK for the first timd. | :18:15. | :18:24.
Bristol Children's Hospital will run a trial, | :18:25. | :18:26.
She might be struggling with drawing big circles, | :18:27. | :18:40.
It's hoped this trial in Brhstol, which will be started by thd end | :18:41. | :18:44.
of the year, can help many more like her. | :18:45. | :18:55.
Dr Stephen Lowis is involved in the trial in Bristol. No question it's | :18:56. | :18:59.
worth it and the risk should be with the families. Does more pressure | :19:00. | :19:01.
need to be put on drug comp`nies to test their drugs for rare conditions | :19:02. | :19:15.
` and be less profit driven? Why is it paid for by a charity? It may be | :19:16. | :19:21.
effective but we just do not know at the moment. Does more presstre on me | :19:22. | :19:35.
to be put on these drug companies? Yes and no. Companies have started | :19:36. | :19:47.
to produce lots of new drugs. That has been a stick and carrot | :19:48. | :20:01.
approach. This has benefited. Why Bristol? We are one of ten centres | :20:02. | :20:20.
that do these research ideologies. Granny went on the internet and | :20:21. | :20:22.
found this herself ` should the NHS inform people about possibilities | :20:23. | :20:32.
elsewhere in the world? That is what I do. I encourage people to find | :20:33. | :20:40.
these things. Families can do just that. Thank you. It's been confirmed | :20:41. | :20:58.
that Bristol Rovers' chaplahn, Dave Jeal, will conduct the funeral of | :20:59. | :21:00.
lifelong Bristol City fan M`rk Saunders. Mark, who was 54, passed | :21:01. | :21:02.
away on Saturday after losing his battle with lung cancer. Back in | :21:03. | :21:05.
March he was invited into the City dressing room to give a pre`match | :21:06. | :21:08.
talk to the players ` inspiring them to a victory. Three years after a | :21:09. | :21:25.
young ballet dancer from Bath was mugged and left for dead ` he's | :21:26. | :21:27.
danced on one of the world's most famous stages. Jack Widdowson was 19 | :21:28. | :21:30.
when he was attacked on a nhght out in Cardiff and left with a broken | :21:31. | :21:33.
neck. Our reporter Ali Vowlds was allowed exclusive access behind the | :21:34. | :21:35.
scenes at London's Sadlers Wells as he made his return. | :21:36. | :21:39.
Two o' clock and Jack's on stage, going through his routine. | :21:40. | :21:42.
Rehearsals have begun for the charity spectacular. | :21:43. | :21:43.
It's hard to believe this young man was so critically ill | :21:44. | :21:46.
Jack's recovery is so compldte that he's now got a full dance contract | :21:47. | :21:51.
And coming to this famous London stage means everything. | :21:52. | :22:00.
To be back performing, it's inspiring. | :22:01. | :22:07.
But in tonight's performancd Jack is not alone. | :22:08. | :22:10.
Ballet Black is just one of the UK Dance Companies all keen to give | :22:11. | :22:13.
Away from the glamour, 14`year`old Emily is being treated | :22:14. | :22:17.
for her injuries at the new specialist NHS dancd clinic | :22:18. | :22:20.
It's being funded by the Dance Again Foundation ` set up | :22:21. | :22:30.
by Jack's parents, who discovered to their cost that there was little | :22:31. | :22:32.
Back at Sadlers Wells and the nerves are building. | :22:33. | :22:44.
This VIP schmoozing is important fundraising time. | :22:45. | :22:48.
The long term aim of Jack's parents is to fund specialist treatlent | :22:49. | :22:50.
How lucky were we? That's the motivation. He's fine, thank | :22:51. | :23:08.
heavens. It's also a chance for Jack to catch | :23:09. | :23:08.
up with old school friends ` and the So finally, | :23:09. | :23:12.
curtain up and MC for the nhght is ex rugby man David Flatman ` | :23:13. | :23:23.
just one of the willing voltnteers. And so began a glorious night | :23:24. | :23:26.
of dance from the UK's finest. Jack is getting into the zone ` | :23:27. | :23:45.
even though he's got me It has been a fantastic evening But | :23:46. | :24:10.
all eyes are on the final act. Jack, the boy they never believed could | :24:11. | :24:11.
dance again. Although just at the start of his | :24:12. | :24:11.
professional ballet career, Jack's performance has definitely been one | :24:12. | :24:17.
of the highlights of the evdning. It's a remarkable story of courage | :24:18. | :24:20.
and determination ` and certainly I am very pleased. Wobbly, but it | :24:21. | :24:22.
was OK! In tradable. `` Incredible. Time now | :24:23. | :24:44.
for the weather. We have some cloud today. Also, | :24:45. | :25:25.
patchy drizzle. Some very nhce temperatures. The seasonal `verage | :25:26. | :25:38.
is 16 Celsius but today it was 0. It is going to be settled. Certainly | :25:39. | :25:47.
some sunshine. Certainly, until Friday, feeling warm. For the rest | :25:48. | :25:54.
of the evening, the cloned will thicken. `` cloud. Overnight, lows | :25:55. | :26:10.
of ten to 13. Patchy drizzld. Tuesday is a good story. We are | :26:11. | :26:20.
looking at some dry, preconditions. `` bright conditions. We max even | :26:21. | :26:30.
see 21 Celsius. Tomorrow, wd will see this weak frontal systel. I | :26:31. | :26:41.
would not get too concerned. It will not amount to a great deal. As the | :26:42. | :26:52.
system pushes, for the remahnder of Wednesday, we are talking about a | :26:53. | :27:01.
settled story. We will be sdeing these temperatures generallx holding | :27:02. | :27:08.
