That's all from the BBC News at Six. So it's | :00:00. | :00:00.
Police investigating the death of an elderly woman found with | :00:00. | :00:08.
"serious and unexplained" injuries at a hospital name her as | :00:09. | :00:10.
Tonight, four members of staff at a hospital | :00:11. | :00:15.
I knew them very well. She was a teacher many years ago. My late wife | :00:16. | :00:31.
knew her very well. They were a very loving and devoted couple. | :00:32. | :00:44.
A car run off the road, three passengers shot at. | :00:45. | :00:48.
Four men from Newport guilty of conspiracy to murder. | :00:49. | :00:54.
When it?s finished, this will be the biggest windfarm | :00:55. | :00:59.
The Welsh companies who've won multi million pounds contracts. | :01:00. | :01:16.
We're in Normandy with veterans from Wales gathering to mark the 70th | :01:17. | :01:19.
An 88-year-old woman who died after being found with unexplained | :01:20. | :01:36.
injuries in a Cynon Valley hospital has been described | :01:37. | :01:39.
Tegwen Roderick's death is being investigated by police. | :01:40. | :01:44.
Four members of staff at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash | :01:45. | :01:49.
have been suspended as a precaution by the local health board. | :01:50. | :01:52.
Matthew Murray has spent the day at Tegwen Rodericks hometown | :01:53. | :01:55.
Tegwen Roderick had lived here in Abercanaid | :01:56. | :02:01.
in Merthyr Tydfil all her life, a well known member of the community, | :02:02. | :02:06.
the 88-year-old lived on this street with her husband John and was | :02:07. | :02:10.
A week ago Mrs Roderick was found with the | :02:11. | :02:17.
"serious and unexplained" injuries at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash, | :02:18. | :02:20.
she was then transferred to the larger Prince Charles Hospital | :02:21. | :02:22.
Now an investigation has been launched into her death. | :02:23. | :02:27.
Derek Games is a former Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil | :02:28. | :02:30.
and lives just a few streets away from where Tegwen Roderick lived. | :02:31. | :02:33.
He told me he knew Tegwen and her husband John well | :02:34. | :02:36.
and even though she'd become frail in recent years he was saddened to | :02:37. | :02:39.
A beautiful lady. Very gentle, lovely lady. Unfortunately, they did | :02:40. | :02:45.
not have any children but they were a very devoted couple. | :02:46. | :02:50.
Police have said that at this stage there is "no confirmed | :02:51. | :02:53.
link between the injuries and the death" but four people are | :02:54. | :02:55.
As a precaution Ten staff at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash | :02:56. | :03:10.
Six of those suspensions have now been lifted. | :03:11. | :03:26.
In a statement Cwm Taf University Health Board said | :03:27. | :03:29.
it takes the care and safety of its patients extremely seriously. | :03:30. | :03:32.
As soon as staff identified that there was a problem with | :03:33. | :03:35.
the patient concerned, they acted quickly and appropriately. | :03:36. | :03:37.
The investigation is ongoing and as I said, they have reassured me that | :03:38. | :03:41.
they feel that no other patients are at risk but we need to find out what | :03:42. | :03:47.
happened. We need to do justice to this investigation. | :03:48. | :03:50.
One charity is concerned about the knock on affect this will | :03:51. | :03:54.
have on the perception of elderly care in our Hospitals. | :03:55. | :03:56.
People may worry about the quality of care overall or the services that | :03:57. | :04:01.
they may receive or a family member may receive if they are to go into | :04:02. | :04:09.
hospital. The vast majority of what we hear are very good experiences of | :04:10. | :04:12.
the way that people are treated by staff but we are -- where failings | :04:13. | :04:15.
occur or events happen, it is vital they are investigated. | :04:16. | :04:21.
The police and the health board say they are continuing to work together | :04:22. | :04:25.
to figure out what caused the death of this well respected pensioner. | :04:26. | :04:28.
Rhodri Lewis is at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon for us this evening. | :04:29. | :04:31.
What's the latest on the suspended staff? | :04:32. | :04:37.
The investigation is continuing this evening. The health board which runs | :04:38. | :04:44.
the hospital behind me says there is no suggestion that other patients | :04:45. | :04:48.
have been affected but if families have any concern, they should raise | :04:49. | :04:51.
it with staff or the senior manager and they have sent their heartfelt | :04:52. | :04:56.
condolences to the family. The community health Council which | :04:57. | :04:58.
oversees what happens at this hospital says it is a very serious | :04:59. | :05:02.
issue but it is that it has welcomed the prompt action by the board and | :05:03. | :05:07.
it is reassured that services are continuing and is awaiting the | :05:08. | :05:12.
outcome of the investigation. South Wales Police says its investigation | :05:13. | :05:15.
is continuing this evening and a postmortem is currently underway but | :05:16. | :05:19.
there is no confirmed link between the injuries and the death. Four | :05:20. | :05:23.
people are assisting officers with their enquiries. This all happened | :05:24. | :05:28.
in the middle of substantial public concern about care for elderly | :05:29. | :05:37.
people. The local MP is a campaigner for improved care. She has said that | :05:38. | :05:42.
she is sure that in this case, the proper procedures are being | :05:43. | :05:45.
Four men from Newport who ran a car of the road and then shot at | :05:46. | :05:51.
the people inside - have been found guilty of Conspiracy to Murder. | :05:52. | :05:55.
Lewis Bridge, Brogan Hooper, Gary Rabjohns and Ryan Battersby carried | :05:56. | :05:58.
out the attempted "revenge killings" in the city last September. | :05:59. | :06:01.
What was left of the car after the three people inside were rammed off | :06:02. | :06:17.
the road and shot that twice. Today, Lewis Bridge, Brogan Hooper, Gary | :06:18. | :06:21.
Rabjohns and Ryan Battersby were each found guilty of two counts of | :06:22. | :06:26.
conspiracy to murder. The court heard these were attempted revenge | :06:27. | :06:30.
killings to get back that two men who in the days before came here to | :06:31. | :06:35.
the Broadmead estate and allegedly robbed Brogan Hooper at gunpoint of | :06:36. | :06:42.
drugs and money. His friends wanted retribution and a series of mobile | :06:43. | :06:45.
phone messages were sent, one saying, get your scraps ready. The | :06:46. | :06:53.
court was told scraps meant guns. Then in the evening of the 3rd of | :06:54. | :06:59.
September, the men in a recently bought vehicle followed the victims | :07:00. | :07:05.
vehicle out of the estate and into Newport. The victims' car was | :07:06. | :07:13.
heading into a violent ambush. The vehicles made their way up Somerton | :07:14. | :07:18.
Road. Two shots were fired from a shotgun and the victims' car crashed | :07:19. | :07:25.
into the side wall of this pub. Two of the victims had gunshot wounds, | :07:26. | :07:29.
one to the head. The other was treated for a minor spinal injury. | :07:30. | :07:34.
Reacting to the verdict, the CPS said these four defendants took part | :07:35. | :07:40.
in a reckless criminal act and it is pure chance that their lawlessness | :07:41. | :07:44.
did not lead to a more serious outcome for the victims or indeed | :07:45. | :07:50.
other members of the public. The men said nothing as they left the dock. | :07:51. | :07:54.
They will be sentenced at the end of the month. | :07:55. | :07:58.
A mine manager has denied convincing himself that he had checked the | :07:59. | :08:02.
correct area for underground water before an inrush killed four men at | :08:03. | :08:05.
a Swansea Valley pit. Giving evidence for a fourth day, | :08:06. | :08:07.
Malcolm Fyfield once again insisted he had inspected the right place. | :08:08. | :08:11.
Asked if he should have carried out another inspection on the morning of | :08:12. | :08:14.
the disaster Mr Fyfield replied that "hindsight is a marvellous thing." | :08:15. | :08:17.
He and the mine operators deny manslaughter charges. | :08:18. | :08:25.
A ?280 million race track planned for Blaenau Gwent could get a | :08:26. | :08:29.
Welsh Government loan to help attract more funding. | :08:30. | :08:32.
The Heads of the Valleys Development Company wants to build the Circuit | :08:33. | :08:35.
of Wales track near Ebbw Vale to host major motor racing events. | :08:36. | :08:38.
It was granted planning permission last July. | :08:39. | :08:44.
Veterans from Wales are among those who've travelled to | :08:45. | :08:47.
France to commemorate 70 years since D-Day, the day Allied Forces | :08:48. | :08:50.
It marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War. | :08:51. | :08:54.
In Normandy, Prince Charles laid a wreath | :08:55. | :08:56.
at the strategically vital Pegasus Bridge and our reporter Abigail Neal | :08:57. | :08:59.
Thank you. Welcome to Normandy. This is Pegasus Bridge, the focus of the | :09:00. | :09:19.
commemorations tonight. There have been crowds here throughout the day | :09:20. | :09:23.
and there will be more tonight for a vigil. It was here 70 years ago that | :09:24. | :09:27.
the first troops were dropped by Eire night behind enemy lines. That | :09:28. | :09:32.
was ahead of the assault the next morning. It was all part of an | :09:33. | :09:35.
ambitious, audacious plan that had been medically as the prepared. The | :09:36. | :09:40.
Pembrokeshire coast was one of the sites that they practised the sea | :09:41. | :09:42.
invasion and tonight we will be looking at the role that Welsh | :09:43. | :09:46.
soldiers played in this fight for freedom. Here is the sole dear -- | :09:47. | :09:54.
story of one Welsh battalion. Taken at Southampton, the anticipation is | :09:55. | :10:00.
plain to see in this photograph. The night before the biggest day of | :10:01. | :10:06.
their lives. This is it, they are on the beach. The second Battalion | :10:07. | :10:12.
South Wales Borderers were part of the second wave of attack, waiting | :10:13. | :10:19.
out at sea for their call. The whole place was a black cloud of dust. | :10:20. | :10:28.
They were firing rockets and guns, every sort of description. We were | :10:29. | :10:39.
circling round, waiting for the beach to be cleared. I'm a day on | :10:40. | :10:44.
the 6th of June, they were called in and despite a bad landing, they came | :10:45. | :10:55.
ashore here. Cash by midday. It was their first experience of war. They | :10:56. | :11:00.
knew the stakes could not be higher. You have to admire these guys, they | :11:01. | :11:03.
are fighting in one of the most important fights for freedom ever | :11:04. | :11:09.
conducted. This was a hugely difficult thing to do, to get ashore | :11:10. | :11:14.
in Normandy. They had one shot at it. Some carried bicycles ashore. As | :11:15. | :11:20.
a 20-year-old intelligence officer, Brigadier Sommerville recorded how | :11:21. | :11:28.
he was sent ahead. On the way to the assembly area, we had 12 casualties | :11:29. | :11:32.
from mortar fire and snipers. They seem to be everywhere. The man | :11:33. | :11:36.
behind me riding a bicycle was hit in the head by a solid shot. This | :11:37. | :11:42.
rather shook me. But I soon got over it. Their task was to secure a | :11:43. | :11:47.
bridge in mines -- eight miles inland. And here it is. With a | :11:48. | :11:53.
plaque to mark its liberation. Out of more than, remarkably, the South | :11:54. | :12:01.
Wales Borderers are the only one is to have reached their target | :12:02. | :12:05.
destination by the end of the day. And their first major battle was | :12:06. | :12:10.
just around the corner. On the 8th of June, they pushed onto a chateaux | :12:11. | :12:13.
where Brigadier Sommerville had a close save -- close shave. I felt my | :12:14. | :12:24.
helmet pushed right down. The next thing was, I saw blood dripping on | :12:25. | :12:36.
me. I thought, oh, my God, but it was nothing more than a flesh wound. | :12:37. | :12:42.
90-year-old Sir Nicholas is the only surviving veteran we have been able | :12:43. | :12:45.
to trace from his battalion of more than 600 men. As far as we know, the | :12:46. | :12:50.
now -- the last watchman of this page of history. Although the South | :12:51. | :13:00.
Wales Borderers were the only Welsh battalion to land on D-Day itself, | :13:01. | :13:02.
there were plenty of other Welsh soldiers with other regiments. In a | :13:03. | :13:09.
moment, I will be speaking to one of them, Gordon Prine from | :13:10. | :13:12.
Pembrokeshire. He was a despot rider with Canadian forces. | :13:13. | :13:16.
The NHS in North Wales needs to win back the confidence of patients. | :13:17. | :13:20.
That's according to its new chairman and vice chair. | :13:21. | :13:22.
In an interview for BBC Wales, Peter Higson and Margaret Hanson say Betsi | :13:23. | :13:26.
Cadwaladr University Health Board is still a "damaged brand", after an | :13:27. | :13:29.
official report last year severely criticised the way it was run. | :13:30. | :13:32.
They say they are determined to turn things round. | :13:33. | :13:34.
It's now over a year since Janice Bosley lost her husband Brian. | :13:35. | :13:43.
He was suffering from cancer when he was admitted to | :13:44. | :13:51.
He died eight days later from complications related to | :13:52. | :13:55.
An inquest ruled it was unclear where Brian Bosley contracted | :13:56. | :13:58.
It was a time when the NHS in North Wales had big problems with | :13:59. | :14:04.
An official report later said that senior managers didn't take control | :14:05. | :14:09.
of the situation. It was one of several problems | :14:10. | :14:15.
which led to the chairman, Professor Merfyn Jones, resigning | :14:16. | :14:17.
The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has now replaced them. | :14:18. | :14:21.
In six months, Peter Higson and Margaret Hanson | :14:22. | :14:23.
have already seen changes to the way wards are cleaned, and the way | :14:24. | :14:27.
But that credibility has been stretched recently. | :14:28. | :14:34.
I think it to say that we were and are still to some extent a damaged | :14:35. | :14:42.
brand. But the one thing that we have got is that we are part of the | :14:43. | :14:45.
National Health Service and very proud of that. | :14:46. | :14:49.
From Flint to Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog, people in | :14:50. | :14:53.
North Wales took to the streets to protest about planned community | :14:54. | :14:58.
The new team admit it's not just about convincing the | :14:59. | :15:04.
Welsh Government officials they can make the NHS work in North Wales. | :15:05. | :15:14.
One can never say never about hospital closures. I think what we | :15:15. | :15:19.
have to look at is that there is nothing hidden. There is nothing on | :15:20. | :15:24.
the horizon at all. What we need to do is to make what we have got work | :15:25. | :15:27.
This new Accident and Emergency unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd opens today. | :15:28. | :15:30.
Managers hope it will help reduce the queues of ambulances | :15:31. | :15:33.
which have built up here and at other hospitals at busy times. | :15:34. | :15:36.
But the new chairman and vice chairman say there's still lots to | :15:37. | :15:40.
do, and it will take another year to sort the problems of the past. | :15:41. | :15:44.
Pen y Cymoedd near the Rhondda will become the biggest onshore | :15:45. | :15:47.
Today, multi million pound contracts were | :15:48. | :15:50.
awarded to two companies - one based in Neath and the other in Wrexham. | :15:51. | :15:54.
They'll be supplying steel and cabling. | :15:55. | :15:56.
Work began at the site in Feburary and | :15:57. | :15:58.
our environment correspondent Iolo ap Dafydd has spent the day there. | :15:59. | :16:08.
As a work site, it is fast. Over 11,000 acres of Welsh Government | :16:09. | :16:15.
forestry land on the hills near the heads of the valleys. Clearing | :16:16. | :16:20.
trees, winding tracks and excavating bases for the wind turbines is one | :16:21. | :16:24.
of the main tasks. One of the contracts agreed by the civil | :16:25. | :16:28.
engineers today is to deliver over 5000 tonnes of steel. It will be | :16:29. | :16:35.
buried in concrete footings. We have got about 100 people working in | :16:36. | :16:40.
Neath. It is sustaining those jobs, the job is about 5000 tonnes of | :16:41. | :16:43.
steel. There are two different types of turbine. That contract is worth | :16:44. | :16:50.
?2.5 million. In Wrexham, there is a contract to manufacture 50,000 | :16:51. | :16:58.
litres -- metres of cables. It is vital both elements are in case | :16:59. | :17:01.
before the turbines are tumbled onto the site next year. Awarding these | :17:02. | :17:05.
contracts today is likely to speed up some of the construction work | :17:06. | :17:10.
here at Pen y Cymoedd. Already, a lot of the work is focusing on | :17:11. | :17:13.
excavating these large pits where the 470 feet high wind turbines will | :17:14. | :17:20.
eventually stand. There are 76 of them and they will be filled with | :17:21. | :17:25.
concrete and steel. It will take three years to complete with around | :17:26. | :17:34.
100 people working on site so far. This is the largest wind energy site | :17:35. | :17:37.
on land that has been built anywhere in Wales or England. The Welsh | :17:38. | :17:41.
Government is set to receive ?100 million for leasing this land. There | :17:42. | :17:46.
is also interesting the money that will be handed to a community fund | :17:47. | :17:52.
for 25 years. The company says it understands its obligations to make | :17:53. | :17:55.
sure this money does benefit local people. It is a sum of money that | :17:56. | :18:00.
has to be handled in the correct way. It is a huge opportunity but it | :18:01. | :18:05.
is also a huge risk. If the governance is not sought to properly | :18:06. | :18:15.
-- sort out properly, then it can actually come back on us. Thousands | :18:16. | :18:20.
of jobs will be driving to these hilltops during the next three | :18:21. | :18:21.
years. After that, giant turbines will be generating Renee warble | :18:22. | :18:28.
power, as ligament encourages less use of gas, oil. | :18:29. | :18:41.
power, as ligament encourages less use of gas, oil. | :18:42. | :18:44.
Let me take you back to Normandy now where commemorations are underway to | :18:45. | :18:47.
Our reporter Abigail Neal is there for us. | :18:48. | :18:55.
In a moment, I will be speaking to a veteran at first this is his story. | :18:56. | :19:06.
I was in the Royal Army service Corps with 89 company. My mission | :19:07. | :19:11.
was to supply all the units with the necessary ammunition rations, | :19:12. | :19:16.
petrol, diesel, whatever. Prior to the landing, we were briefed that we | :19:17. | :19:21.
did not know where it was going to be. We knew it was France and we had | :19:22. | :19:27.
French money. That is all we really knew. And then the first light on | :19:28. | :19:33.
the morning of the sixth, we saw the French coast. At around 5:30am, the | :19:34. | :19:39.
Royal Air Force came out and bombed the beach. At around 6am, the Royal | :19:40. | :19:46.
Navy opened up, and they shelled the beach. We thought, there will be no | :19:47. | :19:51.
Germans left, no chance. But we had a bit of a shock. They were dug deep | :19:52. | :19:58.
into the ground. I landed on Juno Beach, a lot of vehicles on fire, | :19:59. | :20:06.
vehicles smashed up. The thing was, get off the beach as quick as you | :20:07. | :20:09.
can. We got one mile inland and that is where we dug in and stopped and | :20:10. | :20:13.
waited until the next morning. We were bombed every night by the | :20:14. | :20:20.
Luftwaffe. I lost my best pal to trenches up from me. A very good | :20:21. | :20:28.
friend of mine. A shell landed right in his trench. That is why a leg to | :20:29. | :20:39.
go back and pay homage to my comrade 's. I sometimes feel guilty they did | :20:40. | :20:45.
not make it and I did. I always think about the lads we left behind. | :20:46. | :20:52.
Gordon joins me now. Listening to you there, it is an emotional time | :20:53. | :20:56.
for you to be back here in Normandy. Yes, very emotional. Especially when | :20:57. | :21:05.
I look at the graves. What do you think about when you are back in | :21:06. | :21:07.
these locations quitting market must be so different to how it was 70 | :21:08. | :21:15.
years ago -- these locations? Yes, it has changed so much. The | :21:16. | :21:25.
villages are sort of much larger. Is it still very fresh when you come | :21:26. | :21:28.
back to these locations? Yes, I can remember different cases, church | :21:29. | :21:33.
steeple is, towers, that's what the thing. They are the same. Tomorrow | :21:34. | :21:38.
is the commemoration of the day itself. Where will you be? I shall | :21:39. | :21:43.
be at the international ceremony at Sword beach tomorrow. What do you | :21:44. | :21:49.
think when you think about those comrades that you lost? I think you | :21:50. | :21:53.
said to merely it was almost like every day was a bonus after that. | :21:54. | :21:58.
Absolutely. I stand at the graveside and I think, they never married, | :21:59. | :22:03.
never had children, grandchildren, like I have had. You think about | :22:04. | :22:08.
these things when you asked that the graveside. It must give you an | :22:09. | :22:13.
enormous sense of gratitude. Absolutely. We owe that to you too, | :22:14. | :22:20.
Gordon. Thank you very much. We will be joining Gordon tomorrow as he | :22:21. | :22:22.
takes part in some of the commemorations. There is gun to be a | :22:23. | :22:27.
vigil here tonight. David Cameron will be here to note the exact | :22:28. | :22:32.
moment the first gliders landed to seize the bridges. And then tomorrow | :22:33. | :22:39.
at the cemetery, nearly 4000 British soldiers are buried there, there | :22:40. | :22:45.
will be a remembrance service. And then an international event where | :22:46. | :22:51.
the Queen will be present and we will be following those stories | :22:52. | :22:52.
tomorrow night on Wales today. There'll be live coverage of | :22:53. | :22:54.
the D-Day commemorations throughout It means Wales Today is on a bit | :22:55. | :22:57.
later than usual at 7pm tomorrow. Football and despite losing 2-0 to | :22:58. | :23:04.
the Netherlands last night, Wales's performance has been praised | :23:05. | :23:07.
by Manager, Chris Coleman. The Dutch, who are heading to | :23:08. | :23:09.
the World Cup won comfortably, with a goal in both halves but Wales | :23:10. | :23:13.
managed to frustrate them at times. With key players like Gareth Bale | :23:14. | :23:16.
and Aaron Ramsey missing, the manager says it was | :23:17. | :23:19.
a good experience for some We have a squad and we will need all | :23:20. | :23:35.
of them in the next two years. We know that because we have been | :23:36. | :23:39.
through the last two years and that is what we need. These young boys | :23:40. | :23:43.
are getting the experience and it is fantastic for them. We have a lot to | :23:44. | :23:47.
look forward to. A lot of good young talent. I thought it was a great | :23:48. | :23:48.
performance. Rugby and Wales have left for | :23:49. | :23:50.
their summer tour to South Africa. The 32 man squad, | :23:51. | :23:54.
