He's been on assignment with the London Mayor, Boris Johnson. | :00:00. | :00:17.
18 month old Holly is still in a serious condition | :00:18. | :00:26.
in hospital tonight after a crash which killed her | :00:27. | :00:28.
mother and three other members of her extended family at an accident | :00:29. | :00:31.
Holly, from Llanidloes, was a passenger in a car when it | :00:32. | :00:35.
collided with a tanker on the A44 close to Llangurig yesterday. | :00:36. | :00:41.
These pictures show the aftermath of a crash with | :00:42. | :00:48.
Amid the wreckage, rescue teams found 18-month-old Holly. | :00:49. | :00:52.
She was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in | :00:53. | :00:54.
Cardiff, where she is in a serious condition, her father by her side. | :00:55. | :00:58.
Emergency crews including two air ambulances racec to the crash site | :00:59. | :01:06.
from all directions once the call was made from a nearby farm at about | :01:07. | :01:10.
The lady knocked my door, asking to use the telephone and if I | :01:11. | :01:15.
could please ring for the emergency services, because there was a very, | :01:16. | :01:17.
very bad accident down the road about one mile from here. | :01:18. | :01:24.
Which I did, of course, straight away. | :01:25. | :01:26.
This evening, police are still trying to piece | :01:27. | :01:28.
They want anyone who can help to come forward. | :01:29. | :01:32.
The collision involving a silver Ford Focus, a tanker, and | :01:33. | :01:36.
a white Ford transit van occurred at 2.55pm in the afternoon. | :01:37. | :01:39.
The Ford Focus was travelling east on the A44, the transit van was | :01:40. | :01:43.
travelling in the same direction behind it, and the tanker was | :01:44. | :01:45.
Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families | :01:46. | :01:49.
The next of kin are being kept informed, and are being supported | :01:50. | :01:55.
The stretch of the A44 near Aberystwyth was closed | :01:56. | :01:59.
for several hours, before reopening early this morning. | :02:00. | :02:04.
It was identified in the European Road Safety Report last October | :02:05. | :02:07.
as the highest risk road in Wales, and one of the worst in Britain. | :02:08. | :02:11.
Winding corners and few safe overtaking spots make | :02:12. | :02:13.
It is now claimed four more lives, despite calls from the Welsh | :02:14. | :02:19.
government to do more to improve safety on the road. | :02:20. | :02:22.
There has never been enough fatalities. | :02:23. | :02:26.
How many fatalities do you want, before they deal with it? | :02:27. | :02:29.
I should imagine one fatality is enough. | :02:30. | :02:32.
The four victims have been named as 47-year-old Martin Pugh, | :02:33. | :02:40.
his partner's parents, John Kehoe, who was 72, | :02:41. | :02:45.
65-year-old Margaret Kehoe, as well as his knees, 28-year-old Ali Hind. | :02:46. | :02:48.
Friends and neighbours have been shattered | :02:49. | :02:50.
I tried to deal with it all night, but I don't think I slept | :02:51. | :02:58.
because Martin was so good, he was such a good neighbour. | :02:59. | :03:04.
We are a very close community and the thought | :03:05. | :03:14.
of four people being taken just like that overnight is a great blow. | :03:15. | :03:20.
We all feel it, because we care for each other and we are very close. | :03:21. | :03:26.
Both publicly and behind the closed doors | :03:27. | :03:28.
of the quiet street which was home to three of the four victims, people | :03:29. | :03:31.
are offering their condolences and whatever comfort they can. | :03:32. | :03:35.
Though saddened, few are surprised that he A44 has | :03:36. | :03:39.
To get more Welsh students into top universities like Oxford | :03:40. | :03:45.
and Cambridge a network of hubs should be set up. | :03:46. | :03:48.
That's the finding of a report, which showed that Welsh students | :03:49. | :03:51.
are less likely to get a place than their peers | :03:52. | :03:53.
Here's our education correspondent, Arwyn Jones. | :03:54. | :03:59.
They are as well-known for the boat race on as they are | :04:00. | :04:02.
Oxford and Cambridge's reputation for | :04:03. | :04:05.
outstanding teaching and research mean only the very best get in. | :04:06. | :04:08.
But fewer pupils from Wales are excepted than | :04:09. | :04:10.
In 2008, just under 400 pupils from Wales applied for Oxford, | :04:11. | :04:18.
But last year, whereas the numbers applying had | :04:19. | :04:23.
It means that around 17% of Welsh pupils who tried got in. | :04:24. | :04:30.
Today, this man, an Oxford graduate and Welsh MP, | :04:31. | :04:36.
said we need more support for our most talented pupils. | :04:37. | :04:40.
He wants to see 12 hubs across Wales that will coax them to help get | :04:41. | :04:44.
Bring them together, and they will realise there are | :04:45. | :04:49.
And that the issue of getting that peer group together | :04:50. | :04:54.
is hugely important in overcoming the lack of aspiration | :04:55. | :04:59.
and perhaps more importantly the lack of self-confidence that we | :05:00. | :05:02.
Thomas Challinor from Wrexham knows all about that self-confidence. | :05:03. | :05:07.
He has just finished his 2nd year studying biology | :05:08. | :05:10.
at Oxford, and also goes to schools to tell pupils it is not | :05:11. | :05:14.
But, looking back, he remembers how overwhelming it can | :05:15. | :05:19.
At the very initial time point, it was very daunting. | :05:20. | :05:25.
It wasn't until I actually sat down and did the research that I | :05:26. | :05:28.
realised, financially I can afford it, yes I do know I meet | :05:29. | :05:31.
the entry requirements, and the course is actually... | :05:32. | :05:33.
It does look great for me, and then I felt a lot better about it. | :05:34. | :05:36.
So how exactly would the 12 hubs work? | :05:37. | :05:39.
These pupils from already benefit from a similar scheme that has | :05:40. | :05:42.
Once a week we all meet up and then we will practice | :05:43. | :05:48.
for mock interviews, and we look over people's statements. | :05:49. | :05:51.
We have to learn how to think critically and not just learn | :05:52. | :05:54.
It is a completely different style of thinking, | :05:55. | :05:58.
But how easy will it be to replicate that scheme across Wales? | :05:59. | :06:05.
You have also got tutors who, in the college, | :06:06. | :06:08.
are fundamentally delivering A-levels and nothing else. | :06:09. | :06:09.
They know the curriculum, they know the examining boards, they | :06:10. | :06:13.
know the admissions tutors, so I think you do need a critical view. | :06:14. | :06:19.
The education minister says work should begin wihtout ndelay on | :06:20. | :06:23.
a pilot project to set up the new hubs, and while Oxford and Cambridge | :06:24. | :06:27.
are clearly not the be-all and end-all, giving our brightest pupils | :06:28. | :06:30.
the best chance to study at top adversities is seen as a way | :06:31. | :06:33.
The Welsh Ambulance Service says it's investigating its response to a | :06:34. | :06:44.
fire in Carmarthen on Sunday, after which a three-year-old girl died. | :06:45. | :06:47.
Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that Angel Jade Smith was taken to | :06:48. | :06:50.
Glangwili Hospital in a police vehicle. | :06:51. | :06:53.
She was later transferred to the University Hospital of Wales, | :06:54. | :06:55.
where she died, a year to the day since her baby | :06:56. | :06:58.
Their mother, Alice Smith, is still in a serious condition in hospital. | :06:59. | :07:07.
Hundreds of people have held a protest outside the Senedd, | :07:08. | :07:10.
against plans to change specialist baby care at Withybush Hospital. | :07:11. | :07:14.
The unit, at the hospital in Haverfordwest, would close | :07:15. | :07:16.
Hywel Dda health board and the Welsh government say, the changes would | :07:17. | :07:24.
Cricket and Glamorgan have beaten Kent on the final day of their | :07:25. | :07:30.
The home side triumphed by an innings and 11 runs, with Kent | :07:31. | :07:36.
Rugby and South Africa have made two pack changes for Saturday's | :07:37. | :07:44.
Warren Gatland will name HIS side tomorrow. | :07:45. | :07:48.
Changes are expected following Saturday's 38-16 first test defeat. | :07:49. | :07:54.
Scrum-half Mike Phillips has admitted he could be dropped, and | :07:55. | :07:57.
It was a humid one across Wales today. Normally one of the wettest | :07:58. | :08:18.
places in Wales, was today one of the warmest. 20 Celsius, but it will | :08:19. | :08:22.
be a lot cooler tomorrow. If we look at the map, we see that they | :08:23. | :08:26.
showrooms will die away tomorrow. It will turn misty and places. Low | :08:27. | :08:31.
cloud over the Irish Sea, rolling into Wales. In other mild night. | :08:32. | :08:37.
Temperatures of 15 Celsius. For tomorrow, high pressure over the | :08:38. | :08:41.
Atlantic, but a weak cold front will move southwards, bringing that fresh | :08:42. | :08:47.
air, so we weak start -- a fresh start for some. But it will brighten | :08:48. | :08:51.
up across the UK, as it moves southwards. We will see some spots | :08:52. | :08:55.
of drizzle across the East Coast, and thick cloud here, but otherwise | :08:56. | :08:59.
dry with sunny spells. North-easterly winds intruder is | :09:00. | :09:03.
that fresh error. Where parts of Scotland hit 27 Celsius, the South | :09:04. | :09:07.
of England is still holding onto the warmer air. Similar across Wales. A | :09:08. | :09:15.
fresher feel in the north and west. South East-West hanging on to the | :09:16. | :09:18.
higher temperatures. Friday looks dry, with some cloud, but sunshine | :09:19. | :09:22.
breaking through as well. The highest editors in the South East, | :09:23. | :09:28.
cooler on the North, with a breeze of the sea. High pressure still in | :09:29. | :09:31.
control and the weekend is looking dry with a mixture of cloud and | :09:32. | :09:35.
sunny spells. Warmest in the south, a little cooler in the north and | :09:36. | :09:40.
west, with more fine and settled weather for next week. You can get | :09:41. | :09:41.
more detail on the website. What's the future | :09:42. | :09:49.
for Welsh farming and is the role of the Children's Commissioner | :09:50. | :09:51.
for Wales fit for purpose? Huw Edwards has the Wales Report | :09:52. | :09:53.
