Welcome to Wales Today. Our top story: | :00:00. | :00:00.
A toddler is still in a serious condition. | :00:07. | :00:09.
She survived this crash which killed her mother and three others. | :00:10. | :00:19.
That is great need to have a strategic look at this road. We | :00:20. | :00:24.
can't allow more people to lose their lives because it's becoming | :00:25. | :00:27.
too common in event now. I've spent the day in Llanidloes | :00:28. | :00:31.
where people have been expressing their condolences to the relatives | :00:32. | :00:34.
of those who died. Hundreds gather in Cardiff Bay to | :00:35. | :00:46.
protest against plans to move specialist baby care from | :00:47. | :00:50.
Pembrokeshire to Camrarthenshire. It is too far when you are in | :00:51. | :01:04.
labour. It is just ridiculous. It is ridiculous to expect due to travel | :01:05. | :01:07.
all that way in the back of an ambulance. | :01:08. | :01:10.
They might not want to row for Oxford or Cambridge | :01:11. | :01:12.
but how do we get more students to our top universities? | :01:13. | :01:15.
Building a financial services industry here. | :01:16. | :01:18.
How we can be an attractive location. | :01:19. | :01:20.
Why this uninhabited island with no roads is getting traffic lights. | :01:21. | :01:28.
An 18-month-old girl is in a serious condition in hospital tonight | :01:29. | :01:33.
following a crash which killed her mother and three other members of | :01:34. | :01:36.
her extended family at an accident black spot near Aberystwyth. | :01:37. | :01:40.
Holly Hind, from Llanidloes, was a passenger in a car when it | :01:41. | :01:44.
collided with a tanker on the A44 close to Llangurig yesterday. | :01:45. | :01:50.
Scene not unimaginable carnage. These fixed issue with the aftermath | :01:51. | :02:02.
of the crash with a car crashed beneath the tanker. Emergency crews | :02:03. | :02:09.
including two ambulances raced to it. A lady knocked my door and asked | :02:10. | :02:16.
to use the telephone and if I could ring for the emergency services | :02:17. | :02:22.
because there was a very, very bad accident down the road about a mile | :02:23. | :02:28.
from here. I did that of course. This evening, police are trying to | :02:29. | :02:31.
piece together what happened and what anybody who can help to come | :02:32. | :02:39.
forward. The collision occurred approximately at five to three in | :02:40. | :02:44.
the afternoon. The Ford focus was travelling east, the transit van was | :02:45. | :02:48.
travelling behind it and the tanker was coming in the opposite | :02:49. | :02:50.
direction. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families at | :02:51. | :02:56.
this difficult time. Next of kin are being kept informed and are being | :02:57. | :03:01.
supported. This stretch of the A44 between Llangurig on a mistress was | :03:02. | :03:04.
closed for several hours before opening this morning. It was | :03:05. | :03:09.
identified in European road safety report last October as the highest | :03:10. | :03:13.
risk road in Wales, one of the worst in Britain. Winding corners make it | :03:14. | :03:20.
especially hazardous. It is now claimed for more lives despite calls | :03:21. | :03:23.
for the Welsh Government to do more to improve safety on the trunk road. | :03:24. | :03:28.
Whenever we get in touch there has never been in fatalities. How many | :03:29. | :03:34.
fatalities due need? I use imagine one fatalities enough. -- the | :03:35. | :03:47.
feathers have been named as Margaret Keogh, John Keogh and Alison Hind. | :03:48. | :03:53.
Her 18-month-old daughter, Holly Hind, is being treated in Cardiff | :03:54. | :03:57.
with her father at her side. Friends and neighbours in Llanidloes have | :03:58. | :04:03.
been shattered by the tragedy. Three of them were my neighbours. I don't | :04:04. | :04:12.
think half the estate has slept. Martyn Pugh was that a good | :04:13. | :04:18.
neighbour. Dreadful. He was a lovely boy. Lovely nature. So quiet. I'm | :04:19. | :04:25.
absolutely horrified. We had a close community and the thought of four | :04:26. | :04:31.
people being taken just like that overnight is a great blow and we all | :04:32. | :04:36.
feel it's because we care for each other and we have very, very close. | :04:37. | :04:40.
Both publicly and behind the closed doors of the quiet street people are | :04:41. | :04:45.
offering their condolences and whatever comfort they can. Though | :04:46. | :04:51.
saddened, few are surprised the A44 has added to its grim toll. | :04:52. | :04:55.
People in the Towner understandably and obviously deeply upset about | :04:56. | :04:59.
what has happened. Of course. I spent the day he and | :05:00. | :05:06.
when tragedy of scale happens in somewhere so small it dominates | :05:07. | :05:08.
conversation may have been listening to people telling each other in | :05:09. | :05:13.
coffee shop and over the garden fence really what has happened. The | :05:14. | :05:16.
news has been spreading quickly. People have said to me they can't | :05:17. | :05:22.
believe it. Martyn Pugh was well known in this area. Was walking his | :05:23. | :05:35.
dog. I was talking to them couple of days ago Kath believed this has | :05:36. | :05:38.
happened. People are not surprised this is yet another accident on the | :05:39. | :05:41.
stretch of road which has been highlighted in the past as being | :05:42. | :05:44.
dangerous. Some measures have been put in place such as speed cameras | :05:45. | :05:50.
that things need to be improved. The Welsh Government told us this | :05:51. | :05:53.
afternoon the aim to improve safety on roads but as the police | :05:54. | :05:57.
investigation is ongoing they felt it inappropriate to comment. And | :05:58. | :06:01.
Holly Hind is still in hospital tonight. That is right. 18-month-old | :06:02. | :06:07.
Holly Hind was rescued from the wreckage, taken by air ambulance to | :06:08. | :06:12.
the University Hospital of Wales. We understand her father is at her | :06:13. | :06:17.
bedside this evening. People in this area are praying for her to pull | :06:18. | :06:22.
through. That might be some limit of hope to come from this terrible | :06:23. | :06:26.
tragedy which has rocked the small place of four very special people | :06:27. | :06:29.
who were close to many people 's hearts here. It's a dominates their | :06:30. | :06:31.
thoughts over the next few days. To get more Welsh students | :06:32. | :06:33.
into top universities like Oxford and Cambridge, | :06:34. | :06:36.
a network of hubs should be set up. That's the finding of a report, | :06:37. | :06:39.
which showed that Welsh students are less likely to get | :06:40. | :06:42.
a place than their peers Here's our education correspondent, | :06:43. | :06:44.
Arwyn Jones They are well known for their boat | :06:45. | :06:58.
race is for the academic work. Slip and Cambridge's reputation means | :06:59. | :07:05.
only the very best get in. Fewer pupils from Wales and accepted | :07:06. | :07:09.
competitors are part of the UK. In 2008, just under 400 pupils from | :07:10. | :07:14.
Wales applied to Oxford with 84 getting in. Last year, the numbers | :07:15. | :07:18.
applying had gone up with fewer would accept it. It means around 17% | :07:19. | :07:24.
of Welsh pupils who tried got in. In England, the figure is 23%. Today | :07:25. | :07:30.
this month Oxford graduate and Torfaen MP said more support. He | :07:31. | :07:37.
wants to see 12 hubs across Wales that'll coach of them to help them | :07:38. | :07:40.
get into top universities. Bringing them together and they will realise | :07:41. | :07:47.
that people like them elsewhere as well. If you get peer group | :07:48. | :07:55.
together, that is important. Perhaps more importantly, the lack of | :07:56. | :07:58.
self-confidence we need to put into a student. This man knows all about | :07:59. | :08:04.
that self-confidence. He has just finished his second year studying | :08:05. | :08:07.
biology at Oxford and goes to schools to tell pupils it isn't a | :08:08. | :08:12.
straight as they might think. Looking back, here members have | :08:13. | :08:15.
overwhelming it can be to make that application. The initial fine point, | :08:16. | :08:21.
it was daunting. It wasn't until I did the research I realised I could | :08:22. | :08:25.
afford it financially and I do have the entry requirements. I felt a lot | :08:26. | :08:32.
better about it. How exactly would the 12 hubs work with Mike these | :08:33. | :08:36.
pupils already benefits from a similar scheme that has been running | :08:37. | :08:39.
there for several years. Once a week we will meet up and we will practice | :08:40. | :08:45.
for mock interviews, look over personal statements. We have to | :08:46. | :08:51.
learn how to think critically. It is a completely different style of | :08:52. | :08:56.
thinking. But how easy will it be to replicate that scheme across Wales | :08:57. | :09:01.
Margaret Keogh you have got tutors who are delivering a levels and | :09:02. | :09:05.
nothing else. They know the curriculum and the examining board, | :09:06. | :09:09.
the admission tutors. You need a critical mass. It can be spread | :09:10. | :09:14.
across that not everywhere. Education Minister says work should | :09:15. | :09:17.
begin immediately on a pilot project to set up the new hopes. While | :09:18. | :09:21.
Oxford and Cambridge are not the be all and end all, giving our | :09:22. | :09:26.
brightest to -- who pulls the chance to study here is seen as raising the | :09:27. | :09:30.
bar for everyone. The Welsh Ambulance Service says | :09:31. | :09:32.
it's investigating its response to a fire in Carmarthen on Sunday, after | :09:33. | :09:35.
which a three-year-old girl died. Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that | :09:36. | :09:38.
Angel Jade Smith was taken to Glangwili Hospital | :09:39. | :09:41.
in a police vehicle. She was later transferred to | :09:42. | :09:44.
the University Hospital of Wales, where she died, | :09:45. | :09:48.
a year to the day since her baby Their mother, Alice Smith, is still | :09:49. | :09:51.
in a serious condition in hospital. Two doormen at a Bangor nightclub | :09:52. | :09:59.
have told an inquest they felt there was nothing wrong with | :10:00. | :10:03.
the way they restrained a man who Hywel Hughes had been ejected | :10:04. | :10:06.
from the Joop club. Medical reports suggest he died of | :10:07. | :10:10.
asphyxia caused by crush injuries. Colin Parry and Rhodri Thomas, | :10:11. | :10:14.
pictured here in 2005, said they had no worries | :10:15. | :10:18.
about his condition before he was Four Ceredigion primary | :10:19. | :10:22.

from Pembrokeshire today to protest at plans to downgrade services | :10:49. | :10:51.

She says she's had sleepless nights because she's so worried. | :12:08. | :12:11.
I have written letters to the First Minister, health Minister. Nobody | :12:12. | :12:17.
gets back to me. The only people who ring me back at the midwives and | :12:18. | :12:22.
they don't know who is going -- what is going on. It is very unfair and I | :12:23. | :12:27.
pregnant to change my decision. I think the service is so, so | :12:28. | :12:30.
important. The plans at Withybush form part | :12:31. | :12:32.
of a wider scheme to streamline Less money means health boards are | :12:33. | :12:35.
trying to centralise specialists This has been controversial and has | :12:36. | :12:39.
led to protests all over Wales. The Welsh Government said it was | :12:40. | :12:44.
a matter for Hywel Dda Health Board Hywel Dda said it understands local | :12:45. | :12:47.
health care is an emotive subject and wants to | :12:48. | :12:52.
reassure people that the service It will monitor | :12:53. | :12:55.
the changes continuously and the Health Minister for announced that | :12:56. | :13:00.
these changes will be scrutinised Next week a judicial review will be | :13:01. | :13:03.

stop people being stranded? 25 years ago it was almost derelict | :13:36. | :13:47.

for big city bankers Yes, according to business leaders | :13:51. | :13:56.
here and they say all Here's our business correspondent, | :13:57. | :14:01.
Brian Meechan. Admiral employs more than 5000 | :14:02. | :14:17.
workers across south Wales, the insurance company generated ?2 | :14:18. | :14:22.
billion of income year. It's the Welsh success story and a very | :14:23. | :14:26.
visible one at that. It is about to move offices to this purpose built | :14:27. | :14:31.
one in the Cardiff enterprise zone. Work is almost completed on a new | :14:32. | :14:35.
Cardiff headquarters for Admiral. In many ways the company is a shining | :14:36. | :14:40.
beacon of what can be achieved in financial services. It came 20 years | :14:41. | :14:45.
ago as a starter Cardiff because close proximity to London and | :14:46. | :14:49.
support from bodies like the local council. It is a FTSE 100 company. | :14:50. | :15:00.
But can it be emulated by attracting companies to Wales? Clearly, the | :15:01. | :15:08.
organisation coming out of London will be drawn towards Cardiff and | :15:09. | :15:11.
the wood elsewhere. Although I know some of them are looking at Swansea | :15:12. | :15:16.
and Newport will stop there is plenty of evidence that those based | :15:17. | :15:20.
in Cardiff produced enough benefits across Wales. Canary Wharf is | :15:21. | :15:25.
probably one of the most famous financial enterprise zones. It began | :15:26. | :15:29.
being built just before Admiral established in Cardiff. It rivals | :15:30. | :15:33.
the traditional ditty of London for banking and other financial | :15:34. | :15:37.
services. Get the exact doubtful that the Welsh capital can attract | :15:38. | :15:40.
many high-paid jobs away from London. A lot of skilled workers who | :15:41. | :15:46.
have been there for many years won't want to move their families all the | :15:47. | :15:51.
way from London to Cardiff. Another reason is a lot these companies | :15:52. | :15:55.
clients are based in London and they won't want to travel all the way to | :15:56. | :16:00.
Cardiff. Competing like -- with cities like Edinburgh and Manchester | :16:01. | :16:05.
requires trained workforce. Cardiff and Vale College is launching | :16:06. | :16:08.
apprenticeships in insurance and banking. This person is a | :16:09. | :16:14.
17-year-old from Cardiff study business at the college it includes | :16:15. | :16:22.
a paid internship with Barclays. It gives people outside Cardiff a good | :16:23. | :16:28.
few on how things are here and things are improving. It'll give the | :16:29. | :16:36.
reassurance that our paths they can take a stop Cardiff can learn | :16:37. | :16:40.
lessons from what worked in Canary Wharf and companies can learn from | :16:41. | :16:44.
what worked at Admiral. That may point the way to success of | :16:45. | :16:47.
financial services in Wales in future. | :16:48. | :16:50.
Three months today, the people of Scotland will decide if the | :16:51. | :16:53.

There is a lot of pressure with GCSEs at 16 and I | :17:58. | :18:01.

It is just because your parents and your family regardless of your | :18:32. | :18:41.

influence, you are around them for most of the day and what they say is | :18:47. | :18:49.
going to stick with you your entire life. Do you think that | :18:50. | :18:52.
preparing for voting and thinking about your decision has distracted | :18:53. | :18:54.
My exams come before the referendum because to be | :18:55. | :19:00.
honest I think they all have more influence in how my life pans out | :19:01. | :19:04.
Do you feel politically aware enough to be able to vote sensibly? | :19:05. | :19:12.
I do think I am responsible enough to be able to vote. | :19:13. | :19:15.
Even though I don't know that much about it I can always do | :19:16. | :19:18.
my research and things, and there are adults out there who | :19:19. | :19:21.
The opinion polls show the no campaign is in the lead. | :19:22. | :19:25.
They also show a large number of Scots haven't made that their mind. | :19:26. | :19:30.
At a time when most young people are trying to make up their minds | :19:31. | :19:33.

Matt Murray is at Sully Island this evening | :20:05. | :20:12.
I haven't become stranded yet but it is on evenings like this that people | :20:13. | :20:18.
get into trouble. It can see it is low tide and want to walk over to | :20:19. | :20:22.
the island. The thing is, the water can send very quickly here and then | :20:23. | :20:26.
they get cut off and stranded. The only way off the island is to call | :20:27. | :20:32.
the RNLI and be rescued. The RNLI have launched these traffic lights. | :20:33. | :20:35.
At low tide Sully Island looks like a safe haven | :20:36. | :20:38.
It is one of the most frequent causes | :20:39. | :20:42.
of lifeboat launches from Penarth just two days ago this walker had to | :20:43. | :20:45.
be rescued from the island after being left stranded by the tide. | :20:46. | :20:48.
To help people like him, a new traffic light system is being | :20:49. | :20:51.
introduced to warn people when they might be cut off. | :20:52. | :20:54.
Nicola Davies from the RNLI has been wanting a system | :20:55. | :20:57.
What we're trying to do with this sign is take the guesswork out | :20:58. | :21:04.
of it and stop you crossing at the wrong times. | :21:05. | :21:06.
When it is Amber you have 38 minutes left. | :21:07. | :21:11.
The ideal time to go to Sully Island is when it is on green and it will | :21:12. | :21:15.
stay on green for five hours and then it will come to its Amber | :21:16. | :21:18.
stage, when it is going to close and when it is red, do not cross. | :21:19. | :21:22.
As you can see the island is accessible and I could be there | :21:23. | :21:26.
In a couple of hours time it is a totally different story. | :21:27. | :21:31.
The island is cut off when the tide comes in | :21:32. | :21:34.
Even with these warning signs it still catches people out. | :21:35. | :21:40.
I remember being a kid and being told don't go over to Sully Island. | :21:41. | :21:47.
I see people trying to come over with the riptide | :21:48. | :21:50.
and people trying to go out to save them are in danger as well. | :21:51. | :21:53.
It is very easy, I should imagine, to think that | :21:54. | :21:57.
when the tide is out as far as it is it isn't coming in very quickly. | :21:58. | :22:00.
But I now for a fact, having come over here regularly, | :22:01. | :22:03.
The lights are linked to the tide gauge at Barry dock lifeboat station | :22:04. | :22:08.
and is able to sense how quickly the water is coming in. | :22:09. | :22:11.
That makes the decision on with correlated data | :22:12. | :22:15.
which is the difference between the two sites, distance wise. | :22:16. | :22:18.
When it reaches a threshold point which is the flood point, the | :22:19. | :22:21.
information is sent to the display, the display decides what to do about | :22:22. | :22:25.
that whether it is a green zone or a red zone or an amber zone. | :22:26. | :22:29.
Sully Island is the first place in the UK to have such | :22:30. | :22:34.
a warning system installed but at the moment it is a pilot project. | :22:35. | :22:37.
If it succeeds in reducing the level of calls to the RNLI it could be | :22:38. | :22:41.
As I said, it is low tide at the moment and people are starting to | :22:42. | :22:54.
come off the beat. It has been low tide since around after school this | :22:55. | :23:00.
afternoon. It is entering the danger zone out when people might be | :23:01. | :23:05.
tempted to go over. These traffic lights will tell you if it is safe. | :23:06. | :23:10.
It is saying now, it, it is safe to go over. That is also amber, that'll | :23:11. | :23:17.
tell you how long you have got and green will tell you if you got a | :23:18. | :23:23.
good few hours over there. The RNLI are hoping these traffic lights will | :23:24. | :23:25.
use the flash of them in their busiest time which is the summer | :23:26. | :23:27.
months. Cricket and Glamorgan have beaten | :23:28. | :23:32.
Kent on the final day of their The home side triumphed | :23:33. | :23:36.
by an innings and 11 runs, with Kent South Africa have made two pack | :23:37. | :23:41.
changes for Saturday's second test against Wales with Bakkies Botha | :23:42. | :23:46.
replaced by Flip van der Merva at lock, while Tendai Mtawarira is | :23:47. | :23:49.
back at prop for Gurthro Steenkamp. Warren Gatland will name | :23:50. | :23:52.
his side tomorrow. Changes are expected following | :23:53. | :23:55.
Saturdays 38-16 first test defeat. The boys give everything every time | :23:56. | :24:08.
they wear the jersey. Nobody takes it for granted. We work our socks | :24:09. | :24:15.
off in training. Sometimes things don't go your way but you got to | :24:16. | :24:16.
learn and improve. For | :24:17. | :24:19.
the second Premier League season in a row, Swansea City will begin their | :24:20. | :24:23.
campaign against Manchester United. The game at Old Trafford, | :24:24. | :24:26.
on Saturday August 16th, will be the first for new United | :24:27. | :24:29.
boss Louis van Gaal. Cardiff City kick off their | :24:30. | :24:31.
Championship season at Blackburn Quite often Capel Curig in Snowdonia | :24:32. | :24:34.
is the wettest place in Wales but today it was one | :24:35. | :24:45.
of the warmest reaching 24 Celsius. Tomorrow the highest temperatures | :24:46. | :24:50.
will be in the south and south-east. The north and west cooler | :24:51. | :24:52.
and fresher with temperatures nearer Back to today | :24:53. | :24:56.
and not everywhere stayed dry. A few heavy showers broke out | :24:57. | :25:01.
in Powys Carmarthenshire and north This evening | :25:02. | :25:04.
the showers will die away to leave And it will turn misty | :25:05. | :25:10.
in places with some low cloud over Lowest temperatures | :25:11. | :25:14.
11 to 15 Celsius. Tomorrow's chart shows high | :25:15. | :25:22.
pressure over the Atlantic. A weak cold front will move | :25:23. | :25:25.
south bringing fresher air. So here's the picture for eight | :25:26. | :25:35.
in the morning. Grey and misty | :25:36. | :25:37.
in places first thing. The odd spot | :25:38. | :25:40.
of drizzle otherwise dry. Fresher in Pembrokeshire with | :25:41. | :25:45.
a northerly breeze. During the day, more | :25:46. | :25:50.
of the country will brighten-up. The best of the sunshine | :25:51. | :25:53.
on the north and west coast in Cooler and fresher than today | :25:54. | :25:56.
in the north and west, Some cloud but some sunshine | :25:57. | :26:04.
breaking through as well. Highest temperatures | :26:05. | :26:25.
in the southeast. Cooler on the north and west | :26:26. | :26:27.
coast but still around average. The weekend dry with a mixture | :26:28. | :26:30.
of cloud and sunny spells. A little cooler in the north | :26:31. | :26:33.
and west, especially on the coast, 16C but still feeling pleasant | :26:34. | :26:37.
in the sunshine. More fine | :26:38. | :26:42.
and warm weather to come next week. A reminder | :26:43. | :26:49.
of our main stories tonight. An 18 month old girl is | :26:50. | :26:51.
in a serious condition in hospital following a crash which killed her | :26:52. | :26:54.
mother and three other members of her extended family at an accident | :26:55. | :26:57.
black spot near Aberystwyth. How many fatalities do you want? I | :26:58. | :27:13.
should imagine one fatality is enough. | :27:14. | :27:17.
And hundreds of people have travelled from Pembrokeshire to | :27:18. | :27:19.
protest at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, over plans to downgrade | :27:20. | :27:22.
The health board says the changes will provide a better level of care. | :27:23. | :27:30.
I'll have an update for you here after the BBC News at ten. | :27:31. | :27:33.
That's Wales Today, thank you for watching, from all | :27:34. | :27:37. |
