David Jones has been sacked as Secretary of State for Wales. | :00:17. | :00:22.
It is part of a Cabinet reshuffle by the Prime Minister. | :00:23. | :00:25.
He'd been in the job less than two years. | :00:26. | :00:29.
Some MPs expect Stephen Crabb to take over. | :00:30. | :00:40.
If a it was all smiles on his promotion to the capitalist than two | :00:41. | :00:45.
years ago, but this afternoon, David Jones paid a different sort of visit | :00:46. | :00:49.
to Downing Street, sack and a Cabinet reshuffle by a prime | :00:50. | :00:52.
minister keen to freshen his team ahead of the general election next | :00:53. | :00:57.
year. He said he was not unhappy to be leaving the government. He said | :00:58. | :00:59.
he understood the position of David Cameron and that the Prime Minister | :01:00. | :01:04.
would get his total support. Why was he sacked? There were tensions with | :01:05. | :01:09.
the Welsh government. You would expect that between politicians of | :01:10. | :01:14.
different parties. More significant word attentions on his own side, | :01:15. | :01:18.
with conservatives in the National Assembly. There were differences | :01:19. | :01:23.
over devolution, even over who got top billing at party conferences. | :01:24. | :01:27.
Those pensions did not go unnoticed in Downing Street. Political | :01:28. | :01:32.
opponents found Mr Jones hostile to devolution. He had very definite | :01:33. | :01:39.
views which were public, which were against any further devolution. As | :01:40. | :01:44.
witnessed by four or five references to cases between This Place and the | :01:45. | :01:49.
Welsh government, to the Supreme Court and the last few months, all | :01:50. | :01:53.
of which, incidentally, have been won by the Welsh government. It has | :01:54. | :01:57.
not been easy in terms of discussing further devolution. MPs expect Mr | :01:58. | :02:02.
Jones to be replaced by his deputy, Stephen Crabb. | :02:03. | :02:10.
From my point of view it is a Pembrokeshire Colleague. | :02:11. | :02:13.
It will put an important spotlight on our | :02:14. | :02:15.
part of south-west Wales. And in all the years that I have known Stephen, | :02:16. | :02:18.
he has got a very shrewd brain. He understands business, he understands | :02:19. | :02:21.
politics, he understands Wales and he will bring a nice, refreshing and | :02:22. | :02:24.
different approach to the way in which politics is seen in Wales. | :02:25. | :02:29.
Most importantly, the way that the Rest of the World sees Wales, and | :02:30. | :02:36.
they will see him as somebody they can do business with. Stephen | :02:37. | :02:42.
Crabb's or job to go to the Vale of Glamorgan MP or amid concern that | :02:43. | :02:47.
the North might be underrepresented by the MP for Aberconwy. Stephen | :02:48. | :02:50.
Crabb is likely to strike a different tone at the Wales office, | :02:51. | :02:53.
which might include ditching the ministerial Jaguar and walking the | :02:54. | :02:56.
Cabinet meetings. -- walking too. A woman from Carmarthenshire who | :02:57. | :03:10.
stole ?8,500 from a friend's memorial fund has been given | :03:11. | :03:13.
a two year suspended jail sentence. Natalie Thomas admitted taking | :03:14. | :03:15.
the money from the Bandi Appeal, set up to raise money for | :03:16. | :03:18.
a new childrens unit at Glangwili The 22-year-old died | :03:19. | :03:21.
in a car crash two years ago. She was on her way to be fitted | :03:22. | :03:24.
for a bridesmaids' dress. Up to 40 jobs could go | :03:25. | :03:27.
at a bakery in Swansea Swansea Bakeries Limited said it was | :03:28. | :03:30.
consulting with staff and unions, after Hovis decided it would use | :03:31. | :03:34.
its own factory in Bristol. The firm says it'll do everything it | :03:35. | :03:38.
could to mitigate the contract loss. There's criticism tonight that | :03:39. | :03:42.
expectant mums in Wales are not getting the most | :03:43. | :03:44.
effective screening available Improved tests to detect | :03:45. | :03:46.
the chances of a child being born with Down's Syndrome are now | :03:47. | :03:50.
available to parents in north Wales, but despite guidance being issued | :03:51. | :03:52.
in 2008, that's still not available across Wales, unless you're prepared | :03:53. | :03:56.
to pay for it. And laying the foundations | :03:57. | :03:58.
for their future family, Tests and scans are available, | :03:59. | :04:09.
to test for the baby being born with But that test depends | :04:10. | :04:18.
on where you live. The current testing for Down's | :04:19. | :04:26.
syndrome involves a blood test There is a better more effective | :04:27. | :04:28.
test that has been done in England But nowhere else | :04:29. | :04:32.
in Wales offers that at the moment. The fact that improved testing is | :04:33. | :04:40.
patchy, six years after guidance was issued saying all woman should have | :04:41. | :04:49.
it, has prompted criticism. You know much earlier | :04:50. | :04:51.
in your pregnancy. So, obviously, | :04:52. | :04:53.
there are some women who decide not to proceed with that pregnancy, and | :04:54. | :04:55.
that decision is much easier if it And it gives much greater certainty | :04:56. | :04:58.
the woman because You're trying to measure a small | :04:59. | :05:04.
amount of fluid at the back of the baby's neck, so ultrasound equipment | :05:05. | :05:12.
has had to be upgraded and the imaging system of the pictures for | :05:13. | :05:17.
quality control purposes and there is a major training being | :05:18. | :05:19.
undertaken to train sonographers. But one of the issues is, there is | :05:20. | :05:26.
no funding that comes with this. Just because the test is available | :05:27. | :05:29.
doesn't mean everyone will want one. I didn't feel it was necessary, the | :05:30. | :05:41.
screening. It would not have changed | :05:42. | :05:43.
my decision to do anything at all. And I feel that the money could be | :05:44. | :05:46.
spent in other ways in the NHS. The Welsh Government says that the | :05:47. | :05:50.
screening is being phased in across the rest of Wales but it has been | :05:51. | :06:01.
been a complex process with the additional impact on midwifery and | :06:02. | :06:04.
radiology capacity and the logistics of upgrading software has taken | :06:05. | :06:07.
some time to work through. It is hoped that | :06:08. | :06:09.
the new screening will be available More public land could be freed up | :06:10. | :06:12.
to allow people to grow their own food under | :06:13. | :06:18.
Welsh Government proposals. Across Wales, local authorities are | :06:19. | :06:20.
struggling to meet demand The Government says it wants more | :06:21. | :06:22.
gardeners to enjoy the health and social benefits | :06:23. | :06:26.
a vegetable patch can provide. We know that there was public land | :06:27. | :06:38.
available which is not always best used wells in the ownership of the | :06:39. | :06:42.
local authority, Welsh government, or others. Land is available and it | :06:43. | :06:46.
could be better used. We want to make sure that we assess demand more | :06:47. | :06:50.
accurately and make provisions so that the land is there to be used. | :06:51. | :06:59.
Scientists are looking into what is causing a spate of attacks by | :07:00. | :07:01.
bottlenose dolphins of the West Wales coast. It is not rare for | :07:02. | :07:08.
dolphins to attack poor boys is, but the frequency of recent attacks is | :07:09. | :07:12.
unusual. -- the attack poor poisoners. One of the meat reasons | :07:13. | :07:20.
might be food, is there enough food in the area which we have seen a | :07:21. | :07:25.
number of big fish being caught in the day, NUT. Hunting skills could | :07:26. | :07:32.
be that they are teaching each other hunting skills. With the Marine | :07:33. | :07:36.
environment, it is ethical to tell why things are actually happening. | :07:37. | :07:42.
There could be some sunshine on the way, couldn't bear, Sue? Yes, and | :07:43. | :07:49.
definitely turning warmer. It has been a cloudy start. Becoming | :07:50. | :07:53.
brighter and warmer with the chance of a thundery breakdown later in the | :07:54. | :07:58.
week. Patchy rain clearing East, the leader mostly dry but crabby like. | :07:59. | :08:04.
And it will be mild with overnight though temperatures between 12-15 | :08:05. | :08:08.
Celsius. Tomorrow, a cloudy start, and a similar story across the UK. | :08:09. | :08:14.
Showers pulling the south-west Coast, then those listening to leave | :08:15. | :08:23.
a dry day with sunny spells. And temperatures creeping up into the | :08:24. | :08:28.
high teens across most of Scotland, and 25 Celsius possible in the | :08:29. | :08:32.
South-East of England. It is a fine enter the day across Wales, and with | :08:33. | :08:36.
light winds it will feel pleasantly warm in the sunshine. Through | :08:37. | :08:44.
tomorrow night, more cloud making its way in from the west. Some | :08:45. | :08:49.
coastal showers possible. But the dry and mild might foremost. Then | :08:50. | :08:54.
from midnight we see high pressure building from the South, and these | :08:55. | :09:01.
weather fronts are not too far away. Some sunny spells further east, | :09:02. | :09:04.
warming up with temperatures beginning to rise into the low 20s, | :09:05. | :09:08.
but also, some rain pushing in from the west later on. By Thursday, we | :09:09. | :09:15.
start to drag up this humid air from Spain and France, with some hot, | :09:16. | :09:19.
sunny spells, so this will bring greater chances of thunder and | :09:20. | :09:23.
torrential downpours, Thursday and Friday. The end of the week looking | :09:24. | :09:30.
much warmer with temperatures into the mid-20s or the high 20s. Sunny | :09:31. | :09:34.
at times with the risk of heavy showers, and a bit less humid, but | :09:35. | :09:40.
still warm as we head into next weekend. Keep up with the latest on | :09:41. | :09:46.
the website. We will have more news for you in BBC Breakfast starting | :09:47. | :09:54.
from 6:25am tomorrow. Thank you for your company and a very good night | :09:55. | :09:55.
to you. | :09:56. | :10:00. |
