That's all from me, stay with us on BBC1,

0:00:000:00:01

Good evening.

0:00:140:00:16

Nearly 40% of teachers banned from the profession in Wales

0:00:160:00:18

in the last two years have been struck off for having

0:00:180:00:21

"inappropriate" relationships or conversations with pupils.

0:00:210:00:23

The figures were released by the Education Workforce Council,

0:00:230:00:25

but teaching Unions say such behaviour is still an uncommon

0:00:250:00:27

occurrence in schools.

0:00:270:00:30

Nick Palit reports.

0:00:300:00:36

Between August 2013 and August 2015, 62 teachers in Wales

0:00:360:00:40

were subject to disciplinary hearings and of those disciplined,

0:00:400:00:43

13 of them were struck off for having inappropriate

0:00:430:00:46

relationships or conversations with pupils in their charge.

0:00:460:00:52

The offences ranged from having a sexual relationship with a current

0:00:520:00:54

or former pupil, to sending inappropriate messages

0:00:540:00:56

or photographs via text, email or Skype.

0:00:560:01:01

Despite the seriousness of incidents like this,

0:01:010:01:03

the National Union of Teachers say it's still extremely uncommon.

0:01:030:01:08

When we actually delve into the figures, you do see this

0:01:080:01:10

is a very small number of teachers over a period of a few years.

0:01:100:01:14

It is by no means a common occurrence in our schools.

0:01:140:01:16

It is by no means something that we see regularly at all.

0:01:160:01:20

That being said, of course, any accusation or concern should be

0:01:200:01:23

investigated fully and impartially.

0:01:230:01:28

A child protection charity said the changing online environment

0:01:280:01:31

and social networking in recent years had introduced massive

0:01:310:01:34

challenges and risks for the teaching profession.

0:01:340:01:38

They say some staff get into trouble out of naivete rather than malice,

0:01:380:01:42

and believes schools must ensure adequate training is given

0:01:420:01:45

so teachers know the boundaries.

0:01:450:01:50

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious

0:01:500:01:52

injury by dangerous driving after four people were injured

0:01:520:01:56

in a crash in Neath Port Talbot in the early

0:01:560:01:59

hours of this morning.

0:01:590:02:00

A 15-year-old girl remains in a serious but stable condition

0:02:000:02:03

following the incident, on the Neath Road between

0:02:030:02:05

Tonna and Resolven.

0:02:050:02:09

It's been confirmed that a man who died in a fire at a workshop

0:02:090:02:13

in Rhyl last week was the owner of the business.

0:02:130:02:15

Barrie Newton - who was 71 and from Rhuddlan -

0:02:150:02:17

ran the Light Works on Vale Road.

0:02:170:02:21

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service say the blaze isn't being

0:02:210:02:23

treated as suspicious.

0:02:230:02:31

Scientists in Swansea are hoping to be among the first in the world

0:02:310:02:35

to use 3D printing to reconstruct body parts to be used

0:02:350:02:37

for human transplant.

0:02:370:02:38

A team at Swansea University are developing

0:02:380:02:40

a process which grows human cells in an incubator before turning them

0:02:400:02:43

into a structure which can be printed.

0:02:430:02:49

We are trying to print biological structures that we can put human

0:02:490:02:52

cells on and provide the right environment and the right timing

0:02:520:02:56

so it can grow into tissue that we can

0:02:560:03:00

actually eventually put into a human to reconstruct lost body parts such

0:03:000:03:08

as parts of the nose, part of the ear but ultimately

0:03:080:03:10

larger and more complex body parts.

0:03:100:03:18

A major road on Anglesey will remain closed following a landslide caused

0:03:180:03:21

by this week's bad weather.

0:03:210:03:22

Anglesey Council says engineers are assessing

0:03:220:03:23

the safety of the A545 between Menai Bridge and Beaumaris.

0:03:230:03:26

The Welsh Government says - it's making a million pounds

0:03:260:03:28

available to help councils with immediate repairs and any

0:03:280:03:30

maintenance needed to river and drainage systems.

0:03:300:03:37

Football, and Cardiff City fell further adrift of the Championship

0:03:370:03:39

play-off places - drawing one all with

0:03:390:03:41

Nottingham Forest this evening.

0:03:410:03:43

The Bluebirds dominated for long spells but were frustrated

0:03:430:03:45

by a Forest side unbeaten in seven games.

0:03:450:03:49

Tenth-placed Cardiff are now six points behind the play-off spots.

0:03:490:03:55

In rugby, Rhys Priestland has reversed his decision to take

0:03:550:03:57

an 18-month break from international rugby.

0:03:570:04:00

The fly-half's initial decision

0:04:000:04:01

was announced by his Bath coach Mike Ford two months ago.

0:04:010:04:06

But with the Six Nations approaching, Priestland now wants

0:04:060:04:09

to challenge Dan Biggar for Wales' No 10 jersey.

0:04:090:04:16

The weather forecast for Wales - here's Derek Brockway.

0:04:160:04:17

The weather forecast for Wales - here's Derek Brockway.

0:04:170:04:19

It's time to batten down the hatches again.

0:04:190:04:23

This mass of cloud over the Atlantic is a deepening area of low pressure

0:04:230:04:26

called storm Frank.

0:04:260:04:27

Frank is heading towards Iceland but it is going to bring us another

0:04:270:04:30

dose of wet and very windy weather.

0:04:300:04:32

Met Office warnings in force for both

0:04:320:04:34

wind and rain.

0:04:340:04:36

A yellow warning, which means be aware.

0:04:360:04:39

In terms of rainfall, we're looking at another

0:04:390:04:40

20-40 millimetres quite widely.

More on high ground and given the ground

0:05:000:05:01

So turning wet tonight, more heavy rain, strong to severe

0:05:010:05:03

gale force winds, that is 60-80 mph in exposed parts

0:05:030:05:05

of the west and north-west.

0:05:050:05:07

Tomorrow will start windy, another spell of heavy rain,

0:05:070:05:09

heaviest on the high ground in the South.

0:05:090:05:12

During the afternoon the wind and rain should

0:05:120:05:14

ease off, still some rainfall though in the South and West.

0:05:140:05:17

The top temperature around 13 Celsius.

0:05:170:05:20

Tomorrow night showery rain will spread north and a cold night,

0:05:200:05:23

a little snow on the mountains in the North.

0:05:230:05:26

Thursday will be a brighter, chillier day, with a mixture

0:05:260:05:29

of sunshine and showers.

0:05:290:05:31

Some heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds

0:05:310:05:34

and again, the showers wintry on high ground in the north.

0:05:340:05:37

New Year's Day on Friday should be dry but it

0:05:370:05:40

looks like there is more rain and strong winds on the way.

0:05:400:05:43

Don't forget you can keep up-to-date with

0:05:430:05:45
