After 44 years of generating electricity, the Wylfa nuclear power

station on Anglesey has been shut down.

The closure will, for now, bring to an end nuclear

More than 500 people work there - around a third will lose their jobs

A day they had been planning for some time.

Conceived in the 1950s, built through the 60s,

finally opened at the start of the 70s.

There was a stream of nine others that sort of led up to Wylfa,

A credit to the people who have operated it, the technicians

who built it and the original designers, so absolutely fantastic.

It'll take three years to remove Wylfa's fuel, ten years

before the site can be put in what they call a care

With today's shutdown, attention now turns to Wylfa Newydd,

the replacement planned for the site.

At Horizon, we are extremely confident that the Wylfa Newydd

project will come to fruition and that we will see a new nuclear

power station built next door to the existing one

We have a number of hurdles that we have to overcome, of course.

But there is a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes.

But the final investment decisions on Wylfa Newydd has yet to be made,

and plans to build it are fiercely opposed.

More than 100 homes are still without power tonight

after Storm Frank swept across parts of the country.

the Fire Service were needed to pump water away from properties.

Although the strong winds and rain eased through the day,

officials remain on stand-by over the coming days.

Drivers at Arriva Trains Wales have started an overtime ban ahead

of a planned strike in the New Year in a row over pay and conditions.

Members of Aslef are due to walk out next Monday.

Arriva have said the strike is disappointing and unnecessary.

Ambulances have met a new target for responding to the most urgent
