After 44 years of generating electricity, the Wylfa nuclear

power station on Anglesey has been shut down.

The closure will, for now, bring to an end nuclear

More than 500 people work there - around a third -

off-line, a rare view inside Wylfa's control room.

The shutdown so much more than a single flick of a switch.

The end of an era, a day they have been planning for some

Conceived in the 1950s, built through the 60s,

finally opened at the start of the 70s.

It was the last of its type and it stayed running longer

There was a stream of nine others that sort of lead up to Wylfa and it

A credit to the people who have operated it,

the technicians who built it and the original designers.

It will take three years to remove Wylfa's fuel,

ten years before the site can be put in what

they call a care and maintenance state.

With today's shutdown, attention turns to the replacement

At Horizon, we are extremely confident that the Wylfa Newydd

project will come to fruition and that we will see a new nuclear

power station built next door to the existing one

We have a number of hurdles that we have two overcome,

It is not straightforward process, but

there is the commencement of work going on behind the scenes.

But the final investment decision on Wylfa Newydd

has yet to be made and plans to build it are fiercely opposed.

Strong winds and heavy rain have been causing problems in many parts

More than 1,400 homes were without power

today, although supplies have been reconnected tonight.
