Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hospitals across the country are facing | :00:07. | :00:08.
Tonight four are on the highest alert. | :00:09. | :00:12.
We've been given exclusive access to one Accident | :00:13. | :00:14.
We've had a much higher number of emergency admissions. | :00:15. | :00:21.
That's effectively put pressure on the whole of the hospital | :00:22. | :00:25.
and stopped patients from being able to move | :00:26. | :00:27.
Staff here in Swansea have been working flat out and tonight | :00:28. | :00:33.
the message from doctors here and in other health boards | :00:34. | :00:36.
is not to attend unless you really need to. | :00:37. | :00:55.
It's the biggest expansion of Cardiff in a century. | :00:56. | :00:59.
The controversial plan to build 30,000 homes, | :01:00. | :01:02.
many on greenfield sites, has been approved. | :01:03. | :01:04.
Jasmine Lapsley choked to death whilst on holiday in Gwynedd. | :01:05. | :01:08.
Her inquest hears her family repeatedly asked ambulance | :01:09. | :01:11.
controllers how long it would take for paramedics to arrive. | :01:12. | :01:16.
She was wrongly arrested for murder after discovering the body | :01:17. | :01:19.
of John Sabine outside flats in Beddau. | :01:20. | :01:22.
Tonight, we hear of the trauma it's caused her. | :01:23. | :01:26.
I remember speaking to my daughter on the phone. | :01:27. | :01:29.
It was all thinking in my head, I'm never going to see my grandkids | :01:30. | :01:32.
again, I'm never going to see my children again. | :01:33. | :01:35.
I'm going to jail for the rest of my life | :01:36. | :01:38.
It's more than 50 years since trains last stopped in Carno | :01:39. | :01:46.
but could the railway station here be set to re-open? | :01:47. | :01:54.
Hospitals across the country are under severe or extreme | :01:55. | :01:58.
Demand from patients has surged severely, | :01:59. | :02:02.
following the festive period, especially for ambulances, | :02:03. | :02:05.
GP out of hours clinics and at emergency departments. | :02:06. | :02:09.
Some health boards are asking patients not to attend Accident | :02:10. | :02:12.
and Emergency unless they really need to. | :02:13. | :02:15.
Our reporter, Ben Price, is at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. | :02:16. | :02:21.
Morriston's A department is currently at a level three | :02:22. | :02:29.
meaning it's under severe pressure, four being the highest level. | :02:30. | :02:42.
I've been here for a few hours today and it's clear that staff | :02:43. | :02:45.
here are working flat out to deal with the number of patients coming | :02:46. | :02:48.
through these doors and it appears this is very much a situation | :02:49. | :02:51.
This lady has been rushed to A after save the that's suffering | :02:52. | :03:04.
chest pains. Not all patients arrive at A by anvil is but for those who | :03:05. | :03:08.
do they take a very short journey into this room where paramedics and | :03:09. | :03:11.
hospital staff discussed the condition of each incoming patients | :03:12. | :03:17.
before the handover is complete. This is an everyday scenario at this | :03:18. | :03:20.
hospital but during the winter months. Fear and that other | :03:21. | :03:24.
departments around Wales, the workload can be much greater. It is | :03:25. | :03:29.
an extremely challenging time for the hospital and this week has been | :03:30. | :03:33.
no exception. We've had a higher number of medical emergency | :03:34. | :03:37.
admissions -- ambitions. That has put pressure on the whole of the | :03:38. | :03:41.
hospital, stopped patients being able to move through hospital | :03:42. | :03:44.
properly and that is translated into pieces being unable to get through | :03:45. | :03:50.
the A departs as properly. Some of the six health boards are reporting | :03:51. | :03:55.
severe pressure in hospitals. Prince Charles Hospital is under extreme | :03:56. | :03:58.
pressure. It's a similar situation at the Royal Gwent in south-east | :03:59. | :04:02.
Wales and that Wrexham Maelor and Glan Clwyd Hospital is in the north. | :04:03. | :04:06.
Ysbyty Gwynedd says it is facing severe pressure. The rest of the | :04:07. | :04:10.
hospitals in Wales have now been given a model is pressure rating. | :04:11. | :04:14.
Last month, the man in charge of the NHS in Wales said in order to deal | :04:15. | :04:18.
with increased winter pressure the plan is in place to reduce | :04:19. | :04:21.
admissions and to improve support for patients to go home after they | :04:22. | :04:26.
have been treated. According to the worst governments, between 2014 and | :04:27. | :04:33.
2015, 20% 80% of patients A were not admitted for ongoing treatment. | :04:34. | :04:38.
Any could be seen by a GP run at the health settings are stuck at NHS | :04:39. | :04:42.
Direct Wales, the happy but the the phone was sort of medical help they | :04:43. | :04:48.
need. It is a way of avoiding sending people to A Patients | :04:49. | :04:53.
often don't need to go to Castle Mac. But by having a nurse advice | :04:54. | :05:00.
they can be directed to the right point of care. The blood being | :05:01. | :05:04.
encouraged to help ease the strain on doctors by visiting their local | :05:05. | :05:11.
pharmacy. -- patients are being. If they've got flu like symptoms, | :05:12. | :05:15.
particularly colds, sickness and diarrhoea, upset tummy is are quite | :05:16. | :05:20.
common at this time of year particularly so we can help with all | :05:21. | :05:23.
those symptoms. Staff here at Morriston deal with a high number of | :05:24. | :05:29.
patients, it is up the pressure will ease in the coming days. | :05:30. | :05:32.
Joining me now is a doctor, a consultant at Morriston has the Mac. | :05:33. | :05:43.
You staff are still very busy here. It is a little bit better than it | :05:44. | :05:47.
was on Monday but we're still working very intensively to treat | :05:48. | :05:51.
patients as quickly as possible after they arrive. We need to work | :05:52. | :05:54.
out who needs to stay at hospital and who can go home. How busy has | :05:55. | :05:58.
this week been compared to the rest of the year? It has been easier, | :05:59. | :06:07.
particularly with admissions. An example would be on the acute | :06:08. | :06:12.
medical tape, artefacts, strokes, diabetes. We would usually see 35 | :06:13. | :06:18.
patients a day, but it has been more like 45. By the end of that period | :06:19. | :06:23.
we are having an extra 50 patients in bed. We hear about the winter | :06:24. | :06:28.
pressure but it has been a fairly mild winter. What types of people | :06:29. | :06:34.
have been coming in here? We haven't yet seen people slipping. We've seen | :06:35. | :06:41.
a lot of visibility conditions, people with infections, the mild | :06:42. | :06:45.
weather hasn't killed off that many germs. People have been staying | :06:46. | :06:51.
inside and not getting fresh air. Infections and chest problems. Thank | :06:52. | :06:54.
you very much indeed. I will let you get on with your work is it is busy | :06:55. | :06:59.
at Morriston Hospital and around the country. We've heard from the Chief | :07:00. | :07:03.
Executive of Betsi Cadwaladr health board, hospitals in the north and | :07:04. | :07:08.
experiencing extreme pressure. But from Morriston back to you in | :07:09. | :07:09.
Cardiff. It's the biggest expansion | :07:10. | :07:10.
of Cardiff in a century. Tonight, a controversial plan that | :07:11. | :07:12.
will pave the way for around 20,000 new homes in the city | :07:13. | :07:15.
has been approved. It was the final major barrier | :07:16. | :07:17.
to building the houses, many on greenfield sites, | :07:18. | :07:20.
over the next decade. The council says there's | :07:21. | :07:24.
a shortage of housing. Opponents argue the city's roads | :07:25. | :07:26.
won't be able to cope. Here's our political | :07:27. | :07:30.
editor, Nick Servini. The last time Cardiff expanded on | :07:31. | :07:42.
this scale, it is boomtime for the coal industry. Today it is the | :07:43. | :07:48.
largest coal exporter in the world. It may be a different era now but | :07:49. | :07:52.
the levels of growth look similar. In the 20 years up to 2026, | :07:53. | :07:58.
Cardiff's operation is forecast to rise by 22%. The number of new homes | :07:59. | :08:04.
by 29%. The city 's population is young, helping to fuel growth. That | :08:05. | :08:09.
is also net migration. In the 1980s as was less than 50 people a year, | :08:10. | :08:14.
but jumped to 400 a year in the 1990s, it now stands at 1200. Can | :08:15. | :08:20.
the city's infrastructure cope with so many extra people? When the | :08:21. | :08:25.
development start to come forward we will make sure the schools, the | :08:26. | :08:29.
infrastructure which is the transport infrastructure, that'll be | :08:30. | :08:32.
in place. The community centres will be in place and many of the other | :08:33. | :08:38.
features which will require. Completing the local government plan | :08:39. | :08:42.
has been a long and controversial process. After years in which | :08:43. | :08:46.
development was largely based around flats in the city, the ruling Labour | :08:47. | :08:51.
group has opened up swathes of greenfield sites for thousands of | :08:52. | :08:54.
homes in the north-western and north-eastern edge of Cardiff. No | :08:55. | :08:59.
real objective is to it if people need the homeless but that is always | :09:00. | :09:02.
the infrastructure for the arose, easing congestion. The | :09:03. | :09:06.
infrastructure is Victorian around here. The Artesia, very narrow. | :09:07. | :09:15.
Roads and more houses in narrow lanes. How will the city breathed? | :09:16. | :09:21.
What happens to land close to me will clearly have a big implication | :09:22. | :09:24.
for those already living in the city first up but that is an age-old and | :09:25. | :09:28.
wider question for those who don't. There's a larger Cardiff simply | :09:29. | :09:33.
sacking the resources and talents from the rest of Wales? Does the | :09:34. | :09:37.
rest of the country benefit from having a stronger capital? Roger is | :09:38. | :09:44.
a retired plan and an opponents to the expansion. He believes the main | :09:45. | :09:48.
impact in the wider area will be on the 80,000 people who commute into | :09:49. | :09:52.
Cardiff every day. It will be gridlocked city. Unfortunately, most | :09:53. | :09:58.
of the development is planned in areas where people travel around in | :09:59. | :10:07.
cars. Public transport here isn't very good. I. | :10:08. | :10:18.
One group that be happy will be builders. We are told they are | :10:19. | :10:20.
queueing up for the chance to develop valuable sites that for | :10:21. | :10:22.
years have been closed off to them. The Labour MP for Cardiff South | :10:23. | :10:24.
and Penarth has resigned as a shadow During a live BBC TV interview this | :10:25. | :10:27.
lunchtime, Stephen Doughty said he quit in protest at the way | :10:28. | :10:31.
leader, Jeremy Corbyn, sacked one of his colleagues | :10:32. | :10:33.
in a reshuffle. Our parliamentary correspondent, | :10:34. | :10:35.
David Cornock, is at Westminster. David, a dramatic day for the Labour | :10:36. | :10:50.
Party. This is a tale of one reshuffle, to sackings and three | :10:51. | :10:54.
resignations with Labour MPs increasingly at odds over the | :10:55. | :10:58.
consequences. Among those who reside, Stephen Doughty who joins me | :10:59. | :11:02.
now. You said in a statement today, you talked about lies and the Labour | :11:03. | :11:10.
leader's office trying to score points. What do you mean by that? | :11:11. | :11:15.
When we talk about issues like defence and foreign policy, we does | :11:16. | :11:19.
want to be getting into party politics let alone internal party | :11:20. | :11:24.
politics. The way my my colleague was handled and sacked over very | :11:25. | :11:30.
reasonable comments about tackling terrorism, it was regrettable and it | :11:31. | :11:33.
is unfortunate that some individuals have been briefing out his disquiet | :11:34. | :11:40.
motif or stop but by designing and use stoking up this mood of | :11:41. | :11:44.
disloyalty and the Jeremy Corbyn? Resigning is the honourable thing to | :11:45. | :11:48.
do because I would have said similar things to what Pat McFadden would | :11:49. | :11:55.
have said about terrorism. These are very serious matters, not things | :11:56. | :11:58.
that should be dealt with lightly. It was the honourable thing that I | :11:59. | :12:01.
stood aside as well. Some of your colleagues, notably | :12:02. | :12:07.
Paul Flynn, says you are just the sort loser in denial about Jeremy | :12:08. | :12:14.
Corbyn's leadership. I wouldn't have served in his front bench in the | :12:15. | :12:17.
first place stop and welcomed the strong work that Jeremy and I were | :12:18. | :12:24.
able to do the trade union Bill. Really important issues. I was happy | :12:25. | :12:29.
to serve on his front bench despite my disagreement over foreign policy. | :12:30. | :12:34.
But I feel I need to step away. This can't carry on. We've got an | :12:35. | :12:37.
election to fight in Wales in a few months' time. I will be focusing my | :12:38. | :12:43.
attention on it. We've got an excellent leader in Wales, we've got | :12:44. | :12:46.
a Welsh Labour government that has been delivering. I want to be back | :12:47. | :12:50.
out on the streets fighting for the Labour victory in Wales. Think even | :12:51. | :12:54.
joining us. From Westminster, back to you in Cardiff. | :12:55. | :12:56.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery | :12:57. | :12:59.
Police were called to Thomas Street, in Briton Ferry, just | :13:00. | :13:03.
The body, which was found in a lane behind the street, | :13:04. | :13:07.
The 44-year-old man remains in police custody, and forensic | :13:08. | :13:10.
examinations of the scene are taking place. | :13:11. | :13:15.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested following a crash which killed two | :13:16. | :13:17.
17--year-old Connor Williams and 18-year-old Conor Tiley, | :13:18. | :13:23.
both from the Aberbargoed area, died on Sunday after a crash | :13:24. | :13:27.
The arrested boy is in police custody. | :13:28. | :13:32.
Police are also investigating whether a third vehicle was involved | :13:33. | :13:35.
A woman who discovered the decomposing body of a man | :13:36. | :13:41.
in her neighbour's garden and was arrested for his murder has | :13:42. | :13:46.
said she'll never recover from the trauma. | :13:47. | :13:48.
Michelle James discovered the remains of John Saybine | :13:49. | :13:51.
at her block of flats in Rhondda Cynon Taff in November. | :13:52. | :13:53.
She says she was held in custody for four days before | :13:54. | :13:56.
The police have since said Mr Sabine's late wife, | :13:57. | :13:59.
Leigh Ann, is the main suspect in the murder investigation. | :14:00. | :14:03.
In the small garden behind the Beddau flats, Michelle James | :14:04. | :14:10.
told me today about how she found the remains and how she feels she'll | :14:11. | :14:15.
I think this block should be smashed to the ground. | :14:16. | :14:20.
I don't think anybody would want to live here | :14:21. | :14:24.
Her late neighbour, Lee Ann Sabine, had | :14:25. | :14:29.
once told her she owned a medical skeleton. | :14:30. | :14:32.
When the pensioner died leaving a sealed bag in the garden, | :14:33. | :14:34.
Michelle says she thought she'd use it for a joke. | :14:35. | :14:39.
That's what it was, a practical joke. | :14:40. | :14:43.
It obviously went wrong as you can see now. | :14:44. | :14:48.
Me and a friend went at the back, we found | :14:49. | :14:52.
the medical skeleton and we put it on the chair. | :14:53. | :14:55.
I is said to Gareth, look, it's my new boyfriend. | :14:56. | :14:57.
What happened next she says will stay | :14:58. | :15:01.
The remains were those of John Sabine who was last seen | :15:02. | :15:11.
The prime suspect in his murder is now his late wife, | :15:12. | :15:16.
She died from cancer before Christmas. | :15:17. | :15:22.
It's since emerged the couple were investigated in New Zealand | :15:23. | :15:24.
for abandoning their children and changing | :15:25. | :15:28.
But to begin with Michelle told me the police | :15:29. | :15:31.
suspected the remains were those of her former partner. | :15:32. | :15:35.
I remember speaking to my daughter on the phone. | :15:36. | :15:37.
It was going through my head, I'm never going to see my grandkids | :15:38. | :15:41.
again, I'm never going to see my children again. | :15:42. | :15:45.
I'm going to jail for the rest of my life. | :15:46. | :15:47.
South Wales Police have confirmed that a 45-year-old | :15:48. | :15:51.
woman from Beddau was arrested in November on suspicion of murder. | :15:52. | :15:56.
She was subsequently released without charge, | :15:57. | :15:59.
they say, and no further action is to be taken against her. | :16:00. | :16:03.
Michelle says she used her last ?5 to help buy flowers | :16:04. | :16:08.
Now she regards her late neighbour as evil. | :16:09. | :16:13.
She says she plans to install a plaque year | :16:14. | :16:16.
Much more to come before seven o'clock. | :16:17. | :16:27.
This rural railway station closed more than 50 years ago. | :16:28. | :16:29.
Now the plans that could see it re-open. | :16:30. | :16:31.
And as a woman takes the top job at National Theatre Wales we'll be | :16:32. | :16:34.
looking at whether it's a boom time for women in the industry here. | :16:35. | :16:42.
An inquest into the death of a six-year-old girl on holiday | :16:43. | :16:44.
in Gwynedd has heard her family repeatedly asked ambulance | :16:45. | :16:48.
controllers how long it would take for paramedics to arrive. | :16:49. | :16:51.
Jasmine Lapsley, from Liverpool, choked on a grape. | :16:52. | :16:55.
Her father has said the 25 minutes they had to wait was too long. | :16:56. | :16:58.
From the inquest in Caernarfon, Roger Pinney reports. | :16:59. | :17:02.
Attempts to save the six-year-old were desperate. | :17:03. | :17:04.
An off-duty police officer helped Jasmine, his wife, | :17:05. | :17:07.
The atmosphere was charged as they waited for paramedics to arrive. | :17:08. | :17:14.
Jasmine Lapsley, her brothers, parents and | :17:15. | :17:18.
grandparents had travelled to the Gwynedd coast from Liverpool | :17:19. | :17:21.
During a game of cards, the little girl began | :17:22. | :17:27.
In their evidence, the off-duty police officer, | :17:28. | :17:31.
Aled Hughes, and his wife, Awen, described how they tried to help. | :17:32. | :17:35.
Jasmine was motionless, the officer said, she was limp, | :17:36. | :17:39.
When his wife arrived, she took over. | :17:40. | :17:44.
We were desperate for professional help, the constable said. | :17:45. | :17:47.
Eventually, an ambulance and paramedic crew arrived. | :17:48. | :17:49.
Rosalind Hemming, a community first responder | :17:50. | :17:54.
who arrived, described a confusing situation. | :17:55. | :17:57.
There was a crowd of people around Jasmine, she said. | :17:58. | :18:00.
She admitted to the inquest she should | :18:01. | :18:05.
Yesterday, Jasmine's father said the 25 minute wait | :18:06. | :18:09.
The first call to the Welsh Ambulance Service went in at 8.31pm | :18:10. | :18:13.
We've got a child choking, a family member asked. | :18:14. | :18:17.
Try and stay calm for me, was the reply. | :18:18. | :18:20.
A while later there was a follow-up call. | :18:21. | :18:25.
How far are you off now, was the question. | :18:26. | :18:27.
I'm sorry, I don't have that information, the call handler said. | :18:28. | :18:30.
During a third call, the family was told an ambulance | :18:31. | :18:33.
was eight kilometres away. That is around five miles. | :18:34. | :18:37.
The paramedics arrived but it was an RAF helicopter | :18:38. | :18:39.
which eventually took Jasmine to hospital in Bangor. | :18:40. | :18:43.
The inquest is expected to last into the middle of next week. | :18:44. | :18:49.
The family of a teenager murdered by a man who was under | :18:50. | :18:53.
the supervision of probation workers has succeeded in a campaign to see | :18:54. | :18:57.
a report into the way the killer was being monitored. | :18:58. | :19:00.
18-year-old Conner Marshall, from Barry, was beaten to death | :19:01. | :19:03.
at a caravan park in Porthcawl in March last year. | :19:04. | :19:06.
David Braddon, who's from Caerphilly, was jailed for life | :19:07. | :19:09.
An investigation has been launched, following a fire at a youth | :19:10. | :19:14.
Two fire crews were called to The Venture in Caia Park, | :19:15. | :19:18.
A large wooden playhouse was badly damaged, but the main | :19:19. | :19:22.
The estate has seen a number of recent arson attacks. | :19:23. | :19:29.
They've been neglected for years and more investment is needed | :19:30. | :19:32.
That's according to campaigners and local politicians | :19:33. | :19:37.
in Montgomeryshire, who have welcomed the news that a station | :19:38. | :19:41.
along the Cambrian Railway could reopen. | :19:42. | :19:43.
Transport Minister, Edwina Hart, has confirmed Arriva Trains Wales | :19:44. | :19:46.
and Network Rail are looking at the possibility of re-opening | :19:47. | :19:48.
Carno station which closed in the 60s. | :19:49. | :19:53.
This train from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury shows no sign | :19:54. | :19:58.
of slowing down as it travels through | :19:59. | :20:00.
But in the near future it may have to and stop here | :20:01. | :20:06.
The original station closed in 1963 as part of the Beeching cuts | :20:07. | :20:12.
Even though the Cambrian Railway survived this was one | :20:13. | :20:16.
For 15 years this group have campaigned | :20:17. | :20:21.
The community needs a station, to get to work, to get to shops | :20:22. | :20:28.
instead of having to buy a car and spent half | :20:29. | :20:32.
of your salary getting backwards and forwards from work on petrol. | :20:33. | :20:35.
This building hasn't been a station for | :20:36. | :20:37.
It is overgrown but you can see here this used to be the entrance | :20:38. | :20:43.
and that would take you right into the ticket office | :20:44. | :20:45.
and that is what campaigners want to see | :20:46. | :20:47.
86-year-old Clem Richards remembers the station fondly. | :20:48. | :20:51.
He told me, as Wolverhampton football fan he used | :20:52. | :20:54.
Going to West Bromwich, Aston Villa, Birmingham, | :20:55. | :20:59.
Wolves, see the football in them days. | :21:00. | :21:02.
We enjoyed it and it was terrific that it was stopping here. | :21:03. | :21:07.
In recent years tens of millions of pounds has | :21:08. | :21:12.
been spent an hour railways in more populated areas with the Ebbw Vale | :21:13. | :21:17.
railway line reopened for passenger services in 2008 | :21:18. | :21:20.
The Vale of Glamorgan line at ?17 million. | :21:21. | :21:26.
I think so often rural Wales does get left out of transport | :21:27. | :21:30.
initiatives so I think it'll be welcome to have the station open, | :21:31. | :21:34.
not only for the community of Carno but for communities | :21:35. | :21:36.
like Llanbrynmair up the road who are 12 miles | :21:37. | :21:38.
away from their nearest station. | :21:39. | :21:40.
This building became part of the Laura Ashley site before that | :21:41. | :21:43.
A technical analysis will be completed | :21:44. | :21:47.
by the train and track operators before a further review | :21:48. | :21:51.
A new artistic director has been appointed to run National Theatre | :21:52. | :21:56.
Kully Thiarai is currently in charge of the Cast Theatre in Doncaster, | :21:57. | :22:01.
Her appointment means many of Wales's theatres | :22:02. | :22:09.
are now run by women, as our arts and media correspondent, | :22:10. | :22:11.
Thanks very much indeed, much obliged. | :22:12. | :22:15.
They're the shows that have given National Theatre Wales | :22:16. | :22:18.
In unusual locations and telling original stories, it s | :22:19. | :22:24.
their critical success that attracted Kully Thiarai | :22:25. | :22:27.
My vision for the company is to grow the original inventive, | :22:28. | :22:32.
innovative work that it has already been doing. | :22:33. | :22:36.
Make sure that the diversity of the work that it makes | :22:37. | :22:39.
has the widest reach and is accessible and inclusive | :22:40. | :22:42.
toboth the communities of Wales but also has a far-reaching impact | :22:43. | :22:47.
across the nation and internationally to. | :22:48. | :22:50.
Thiarai is no stranger to National Theatre Wales, | :22:51. | :22:56.
having directed this 2011 show where the audience took a taxi ride | :22:57. | :23:00.
She made an impression then and has been praised again today. | :23:01. | :23:06.
The people I've spoken to in the arts industry are really | :23:07. | :23:10.
excited about what the new boss of National | :23:11. | :23:12.
Theatre Wales will bring to the company and to the country. | :23:13. | :23:14.
There is also a lot of talk about her gender | :23:15. | :23:17.
because it means most of the big producing theatres in Wales are now | :23:18. | :23:20.
Kully Thiarai is the latest woman to run one of Wales's theatres | :23:21. | :23:26.
where she'll be in the company of Rachel O'Riordan | :23:27. | :23:29.
at Cardiff's Sherman Cymru, Tamara Harvey at Clwyd Theatr Cymru | :23:30. | :23:32.
in Mold, and Elen ap Robert at Pontio in Bangor. | :23:33. | :23:36.
But does a woman at the top of the company make a difference? | :23:37. | :23:44.
In Cardiff Bay they're rehearsing an all-female Shakespeare that'll be | :23:45. | :23:48.
performed at the Wales Millennium Centre next month and its director | :23:49. | :23:51.
thinks a female leader brings a new perspective, | :23:52. | :23:55.
at a time when middle-aged men still dominate the boardrooms. | :23:56. | :23:59.
I think it makes a huge difference but I think it is just the start | :24:00. | :24:02.
I think we need to look at our governance as well | :24:03. | :24:07.
and we need to look at who is in charge at all levels. | :24:08. | :24:10.
It is interesting the concept of there being loads of women | :24:11. | :24:12.
in charge when we've never talked about loads of men being in charge. | :24:13. | :24:16.
But I think we need a more balanced approach. | :24:17. | :24:20.
After six years of successful productions, the new woman | :24:21. | :24:23.
at the top of National Theatre Wales will open a new act for the company | :24:24. | :24:27.
Glamorgan Cricket Club are seeking to appoint a new head coach. | :24:28. | :24:37.
The advertisment has appeared on their website, following | :24:38. | :24:40.
the departure of Toby Radford a year before the scheduled | :24:41. | :24:43.
BBC Wales understands there's already been external interest. | :24:44. | :24:48.
Assistant coaches Robert Croft and Steve Watkin were both | :24:49. | :24:51.
in contention when Radford got the job two years ago. | :24:52. | :24:57.
Jim Williams from Presteigne narrowly lost out on a place | :24:58. | :24:59.
in the last 16 of the BDO World Darts Championship, | :25:00. | :25:02.
losing four sets to three to Wesley Harms from the Netherlands. | :25:03. | :25:06.
Dolgellau's Martin Phillips will play for a place in the quarter | :25:07. | :25:09.
Time for a look at the weather, Derek, some respite from the rain | :25:10. | :25:16.
More rain on way but some more sunshine tomorrow. | :25:17. | :25:21.
The sun made an appearance today at least for a while. | :25:22. | :25:26.
This picture from one of our weather watchers in Powys. | :25:27. | :25:29.
But the weather remains very changeable. | :25:30. | :25:31.
The satellite picture shows a mass of thick cloud over the Atlantic | :25:32. | :25:33.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of heavy rain for south | :25:34. | :25:38.
So a dry start this evening but it won't last. | :25:39. | :25:46.
Rain in Pembrokeshire will spread across the rest | :25:47. | :25:48.
Some heavy rain accompanied by a stronger winds. | :25:49. | :25:53.
However, it should dry-up in the south and west later | :25:54. | :25:56.
Here's the picture for eight in the morning. | :25:57. | :26:00.
One or two showers about otherwise most of the country dry. | :26:01. | :26:03.
Well broken cloud and good visibility. | :26:04. | :26:06.
Mind you, it will be breezy and feeling cold in the wind. | :26:07. | :26:09.
So a bright, breezy day tomorrow with sunny spells and a few | :26:10. | :26:17.
The showers wintry on the hill tops and mountains but they will move | :26:18. | :26:22.
through quickly on the breeze and a lot of places | :26:23. | :26:24.
Top temperatures five and eight Celsius. | :26:25. | :26:28.
Tomorrow evening most of the country dry, clear and cold | :26:29. | :26:37.
But more rain will spread from the west after midnight. | :26:38. | :26:41.
Heavy in places with a little snow on the hills and mountains. | :26:42. | :26:45.
On Friday the rain and snow will clear. | :26:46. | :26:47.
It will brighten-up with a mixture of sunshine and scattered showers. | :26:48. | :26:52.
On Saturday low pressure will bring another spell of wind and rain. | :26:53. | :26:57.
Followed by showers in the south and west. | :26:58. | :27:02.
And then next week a cold snap on the way with | :27:03. | :27:10.
A few wintry showers but some drier weather for a change. | :27:11. | :27:21.
The reminder of the headlines. Hospitals are under severe pressure. | :27:22. | :27:29.
Demand for and balances, emergency departments has surged since | :27:30. | :27:32.
Christmas. Some health was a lasting peace is not to attend A unless | :27:33. | :27:34.
they really need to. I'll have a quick update at eight, | :27:35. | :27:35.
and a full round up after the | :27:36. | :27:39. |
