That's all from the BBC News at Six - so it's goodbye from me - | :00:00. | :00:43.
Tonight, the story of how this patriotic little boy from the Welsh | :00:44. | :00:46.
Is Swansea's billion pounds tidal lagoon project under threat? | :00:47. | :00:50.
An independent review will examine the cost and value of wave power. | :00:51. | :00:53.
The death of teenage soldier Cheryl James from Llangollen. | :00:54. | :00:55.
The inquest hears some military officers viewed new recruits | :00:56. | :00:57.
And a warning tonight from steel bosses that the industry is sleep | :00:58. | :01:01.
A man from Cardiff accused of helping his teenage friend | :01:02. | :01:11.
travel to Syria to fight alongside his brother | :01:12. | :01:14.
with so-called Islamic State is behind bars tonight. | :01:15. | :01:17.
Kristen Brekke, along with two other men, was accused of assisting | :01:18. | :01:20.
Aseel Muthana in the preparation of an act of terrorism. | :01:21. | :01:24.
Sentencing him to four and a half years, the judge said Brekke | :01:25. | :01:28.
was "perhaps naive" and may have acted out of "misguided friendship". | :01:29. | :01:32.
For almost a month, Kristen Brekke has been arriving at the Old Bailey | :01:33. | :01:41.
each morning to hear the case against him and two others. | :01:42. | :01:43.
Tonight, the young man from Grangetown is behind bars | :01:44. | :01:45.
Along with Forhad Rahman and Adeel Ulhaq, they have been | :01:46. | :01:53.
found guilty of helping this Cardiff teenager, | :01:54. | :01:55.
Aseel Muthana, travel to Syria to fight jihad. | :01:56. | :01:59.
A lot of people think it is just to put this flag | :02:00. | :02:02.
Nasser Muthana, Aseel's older brother, was one of two infamous | :02:03. | :02:06.
recruits to so-called IS who appeared in a propaganda | :02:07. | :02:10.
video entitled 'There is no life without jihad'. | :02:11. | :02:14.
Aseel was desperate to join him and fight | :02:15. | :02:17.
Brekke was one of three men that helped him do just that. | :02:18. | :02:23.
Brekke first met Aseel while they were working at this cafe | :02:24. | :02:26.
in Grangetown, where they became friends. | :02:27. | :02:29.
The Old Bailey heard Brekke helped him get and store | :02:30. | :02:32.
a new passport as his parents had confiscated his original. | :02:33. | :02:35.
They say he also bought and stored Army gear and boots for him. | :02:36. | :02:38.
The other men provided him with money and expertise | :02:39. | :02:41.
to fund his jihadi journey in February 2014. | :02:42. | :02:45.
It was more than a year ago that Brekke, then 18, | :02:46. | :02:48.
was arrested at his home in Grangetown by officers | :02:49. | :02:51.
of the Wales Extremism and Counter-Terrorism Unit | :02:52. | :02:53.
and charged with assisting in the preparation of | :02:54. | :02:56.
At the time, his mother, who is Welsh, and his father, | :02:57. | :03:01.
who is of Norwegian ancestry, confirmed their son had converted | :03:02. | :03:05.
They said no one else in the family was a Muslim. | :03:06. | :03:10.
This footage of him on a school trip at the age of ten shows a happy, | :03:11. | :03:14.
contented young lad who is very patriotic. | :03:15. | :03:17.
I feel proud of being Welsh because I like the Red Dragon | :03:18. | :03:21.
and when I sing the anthem, it makes me very proud | :03:22. | :03:24.
But in less than a decade, that young boy would be in the dock | :03:25. | :03:30.
at the Old Bailey alongside two others on terror charges. | :03:31. | :03:34.
Brekke told the Old Bailey jury that within a couple of years of starting | :03:35. | :03:37.
secondary school, he decided to convert to Islam. | :03:38. | :03:40.
He said most of his friends were Muslim and he wanted to fit in. | :03:41. | :03:44.
He took his declaration of faith at this small mosque just a few | :03:45. | :03:48.
streets from his home which is renowned for | :03:49. | :03:50.
We taught him so we knew him for quite a while. | :03:51. | :03:56.
I think since the age of 15 and now he is at the age of 19. | :03:57. | :04:03.
So we have not seen any extremism in him. | :04:04. | :04:07.
The name Kristen is the Norwegian form of Christian but he decided | :04:08. | :04:11.
after his conversion at this mosque that that name | :04:12. | :04:14.
He changed it to Kaleem, the Arabic meaning - | :04:15. | :04:18.
a speaker with the ability to understand people and merge | :04:19. | :04:22.
conflicting viewpoints to create harmony. | :04:23. | :04:25.
But his life has been far from harmonious since. | :04:26. | :04:29.
Then come join us at Cardiff hill - AKA Asda hill. | :04:30. | :04:34.
Part of the case against him was this video shot on a mobile | :04:35. | :04:41.
phone at night on what the pair call Asda hill. | :04:42. | :04:45.
The prosecution say it shows Brekke knew exactly | :04:46. | :04:48.
Recorded in December 2013, it shows the two teenagers shouting | :04:49. | :04:53.
Waving a gun in front of the camera and taking potshots at tin cans, | :04:54. | :04:59.
they fantasise that what they see below them is not Cardiff Bay | :05:00. | :05:03.
The Asda supermarket, a military checkpoint in Raqqa. | :05:04. | :05:08.
Two months later, that pretence is a reality for Aseel Muthana. | :05:09. | :05:12.
If you are watching this, I am probably dead. | :05:13. | :05:15.
I am probably like a legend or something. | :05:16. | :05:18.
Brekke's co-accused, Forhad Rahman and Adeel Ulhaq, | :05:19. | :05:21.
did not know Aseel Muthana or Brekke personally. | :05:22. | :05:24.
Experts say such radicalisation on the net is impossible to police. | :05:25. | :05:30.
I noticed one of the videos on this case, one of the guys on the video | :05:31. | :05:34.
says, you may feel depressed, if you come to us this | :05:35. | :05:38.
They're pulling on these factors, you may not feel involved | :05:39. | :05:43.
in your community, you may feel a sense of disconnection, | :05:44. | :05:47.
The Prevent strategy is the Home Office funded scheme | :05:48. | :05:51.
Aseel Muthana was being monitored by Prevent unsuccessfully. | :05:52. | :05:56.
His father says the system failed his family. | :05:57. | :05:59.
If you are preventing it, how can you name yourself | :06:00. | :06:03.
They did not employ the right people. | :06:04. | :06:09.
I don't think that trust has always been there. | :06:10. | :06:11.
I am not sure if in this case this was the particular reason. | :06:12. | :06:15.
Certainly, a stronger degree of trust and communication | :06:16. | :06:18.
across-the-board would mean there are less likely to be | :06:19. | :06:21.
instances where things fall through gaps in the net. | :06:22. | :06:28.
With yet another high-profile case involving someone from Cardiff, | :06:29. | :06:32.
the Muslim community here say they are under the spotlight | :06:33. | :06:35.
Their response, a series of mosque open days to reassure the public | :06:36. | :06:41.
they have nothing to hide and reiterate they do not support | :06:42. | :06:44.
We have got to get equilibrium in the media so for every time | :06:45. | :06:50.
there is one event that is negative or terror related, I could tell | :06:51. | :06:54.
you five or ten events that are in the community where Muslims | :06:55. | :06:57.
are making a positive impact and affecting the local community. | :06:58. | :07:01.
21,000 Muslims live in Cardiff, the vast majority law-abiding, | :07:02. | :07:06.
but tonight, with another from their community behind bars, | :07:07. | :07:09.
they are searching for answers about how to tackle those | :07:10. | :07:12.
Nick, what's been the reaction to today's verdict? | :07:13. | :07:23.
The police are busy very pleased with the outcome. This has been a | :07:24. | :07:31.
joint investigation between two English counterterrorism units and | :07:32. | :07:34.
the Wales counterterrorism unit. They describe it as a conquest MS | :07:35. | :07:39.
the nation. The Assistant Chief Constable Rob Price out Wales police | :07:40. | :07:43.
has released a statement saying the sentences shown to those who support | :07:44. | :07:48.
a terrorist organisation will be brought to justice. There is no | :07:49. | :07:52.
place for those terrorists in Britain. He added that everybody has | :07:53. | :07:57.
a responsibility for spotting the early signs of radicalisation and | :07:58. | :08:00.
said the police want to work with the community in partnership to | :08:01. | :08:05.
protect those who are potentially vulnerable or showing signs of | :08:06. | :08:09.
violent extremism and stop them going to Syria. | :08:10. | :08:14.
There are serious questions tonight over the future | :08:15. | :08:17.
The UK Government has announced an independent review | :08:18. | :08:21.
of Tidal Lagoon Energy, saying more work needs to be done | :08:22. | :08:23.
to determine whether it presents value for money. | :08:24. | :08:25.
The company behind the project says it welcomes the opportunity | :08:26. | :08:28.
to put its case forward but it's concerned about the | :08:29. | :08:30.
It can be a long walk to the sea when the tide goes out in Swansea | :08:31. | :08:44.
Bay but maybe not as long as the possible wait for a decision on | :08:45. | :08:49.
tidal lagoon energy year. As the UK Government announced an independent | :08:50. | :08:52.
review of the feasibility and practicality of this kind of energy, | :08:53. | :08:56.
others see the news as a delaying tactic over a final decision. I am | :08:57. | :09:02.
disappointed for the people of Swansea East because they are | :09:03. | :09:05.
desperate for this. I am disappointed for the people of Wales | :09:06. | :09:10.
because this was our opportunity. And I am disappointed they play | :09:11. | :09:12.
these games with something so important. The chief executive of | :09:13. | :09:18.
tidal lagoon energy has warned the UK Government it must decide in the | :09:19. | :09:21.
next few weeks whether or not it is going to invest in this billion | :09:22. | :09:25.
pound project. Building work has been delayed because every time they | :09:26. | :09:28.
come to discuss how much public money will be put forward, | :09:29. | :09:33.
negotiations have stalled. Responding to the forthcoming | :09:34. | :09:36.
review, the Chief Executive of tidal lagoon energy said in a statement, | :09:37. | :09:40.
we welcome the opportunity to put the case for a major programme of | :09:41. | :09:45.
cost-effective power. This is a home-grown source of power, the | :09:46. | :09:49.
natural way to power our nation. He said the review should not impact | :09:50. | :09:52.
the finalisation of our commercial discussions. The Department for | :09:53. | :09:57.
Energy and Climate Change says the developers will take part in the | :09:58. | :10:00.
review while discussions continue. While that might be the case, | :10:01. | :10:07.
businesses in the local area are now concerned about the time and money | :10:08. | :10:09.
they have already invested in this project. The delay now places great | :10:10. | :10:17.
uncertainty and there are not many new opportunities in Port Talbot, | :10:18. | :10:21.
Swansea Bay of the type that can employ people to the extent that the | :10:22. | :10:28.
tidal lagoon can. From that point of view, a great disappointment. We | :10:29. | :10:31.
have been working very hard for over two years. And as an industry group, | :10:32. | :10:38.
supporting tidal lagoon, our expenditure has run into hundreds of | :10:39. | :10:42.
thousands of pounds. While the debate over tidal lagoon energy | :10:43. | :10:47.
continues to ebb and flow, it is hoped this delay does not signal the | :10:48. | :10:48.
end for the Swansea Bay project. Let's have a word with our business | :10:49. | :10:52.
correspondent Brian Meechan. A warning tonight that if the tidal | :10:53. | :10:54.
lagoon doesn't happen in Swansea, That is the concern of some people | :10:55. | :11:07.
including some supporters and investors. I have spoken to the boss | :11:08. | :11:15.
of Liberty Steel, one of the investors. Tidal lagoon said it | :11:16. | :11:19.
needed a decision within weeks and there was an expectation around that | :11:20. | :11:24.
coming up to the budget next month, that decision either way would be | :11:25. | :11:28.
made. We now know it is going to be months before that decision is made | :11:29. | :11:32.
and that could delay the project for years. The UK Government is looking | :11:33. | :11:37.
to see whether it is value for money because it is an expensive project. | :11:38. | :11:40.
We are going to talk about the steel industry later in the programme but | :11:41. | :11:44.
just a thought on this project's place in the wider industry in south | :11:45. | :11:50.
Wales. If you look at some of the arguments being made, we know that | :11:51. | :11:53.
cheaper energy is incredibly important to the future of the steel | :11:54. | :11:57.
industry. That is why the boss of Liberty Steel says they have | :11:58. | :12:03.
invested in this. But there is also a wider impact. | :12:04. | :12:06.
The lagoons generate over 70,000 jobs during construction, | :12:07. | :12:08.
over 35,000 sustainable for 120 years - | :12:09. | :12:09.
It creates an industry. It creates an entire industry. | :12:10. | :12:14.
We are looking at several investments on the back of that. | :12:15. | :12:17.
We want to do several things, whether it is in steel or concrete. | :12:18. | :12:26.
Lord Nick Bourne, who is in charge of this review, is also a member of | :12:27. | :12:33.
the Welsh government steel task force so he is aware of how all of | :12:34. | :12:37.
this fits together but we are going on beyond the Assembly election. | :12:38. | :12:40.
The Public Services Minister says people need to "grow up" | :12:41. | :12:44.
in their opposition to cutting the number of councils in Wales. | :12:45. | :12:46.
Leighton Andrews has told the Assembly's Local Government | :12:47. | :12:48.
Committee that councils have been given "every opportunity" to agree | :12:49. | :12:50.
on a new map of local authorities but have failed to do so. | :12:51. | :12:55.
But the chief executive of the Welsh Local Government Association, | :12:56. | :12:57.
Steve Thomas, said it took longer to change councils across Wales | :12:58. | :13:00.
The reality is, everybody can agree on local government reorganisation | :13:01. | :13:08.
but nobody is prepared to agree on what it should look like. | :13:09. | :13:12.
People need to grow up, bluntly, and we need to get agreement on this | :13:13. | :13:18.
as soon as we can after the May elections because, as the trade | :13:19. | :13:21.
unions have said, this is leading to some demoralisation among staff | :13:22. | :13:26.
in local government who want to know what the way forward is. | :13:27. | :13:30.
Work has been continuing to restore drinking water to around 1,700 | :13:31. | :13:35.
households across parts of Carmarthenshire after | :13:36. | :13:37.
Welsh Water began carrying out repair work overnight | :13:38. | :13:42.
and through the day and said it hoped to restore the supply | :13:43. | :13:46.
More than half ?1 million in tuition fees and grants was granted to a | :13:47. | :14:06.
college in Wales. The West London Vocational Training College in | :14:07. | :14:10.
Cardiff was the focus of a BBC will weaken week out investigation. The | :14:11. | :14:13.
College owner has denied knowing of any wrongdoing in the recruitment of | :14:14. | :14:18.
students. The Welsh government has declined to comment. | :14:19. | :14:20.
The Army base where a Welsh soldier was found dead had a "highly | :14:21. | :14:23.
sexualised" environment and some senior staff saw young female | :14:24. | :14:25.
18-year-old Private Cheryl James from Llangollen was found | :14:26. | :14:32.
with a single gunshot wound to the head at Deepcut Barracks | :14:33. | :14:35.
in 1995 amid claims of bullying and sexual assault. | :14:36. | :14:37.
A new inquest into her death is continuing. | :14:38. | :14:41.
What was life like at deep cut barracks in Surrey more than 20 | :14:42. | :14:56.
years ago? And could it have contributed to the death of this | :14:57. | :15:01.
teenage soldier from Angolan? Alison Foster QC is representing her family | :15:02. | :15:07.
at the new inquest into her death. She asked the man in charge of | :15:08. | :15:11.
welfare in the Army now about the barracks in 1995. There's the army | :15:12. | :15:15.
accept that some officers saw recruits as a sexual challenge? He | :15:16. | :15:22.
said, yes, we do. Sadly not everybody subscribed to the set of | :15:23. | :15:24.
values that one would wish. This woman was a close friend of | :15:25. | :15:59.
hers at the barracks and she told the inquest the cab at the time was | :16:00. | :16:05.
pretty diabolical. Life was not much of an existence. Another friend told | :16:06. | :16:09.
the coroner that a Sergeant at the base has taken a liking to her but | :16:10. | :16:14.
the feeling was not mutual. She said she never heard of the Sergeant Mick | :16:15. | :16:18.
Brennan approaches towards her but she knew she did not like him. She | :16:19. | :16:22.
was later ordered to carry out tasks such as picking up litter in the | :16:23. | :16:28.
rain. The inquest continues. Des James has listened for two years now | :16:29. | :16:33.
about life at the barracks while his daughter was there. Tonight, they | :16:34. | :16:38.
said, for the first time in 20 years, they feel they have received | :16:39. | :16:42.
a public acknowledgement of the concerns they have been raising. | :16:43. | :16:45.
Much more to come before seven o'clock. | :16:46. | :16:46.
There are serious problems with the EU but we should stay in. | :16:47. | :16:49.
And much nicer today with sunshine and lighter winds. | :16:50. | :16:56.
More rain and a risk of snow over the weekend. | :16:57. | :17:05.
Tata Steel, who've announced heavy job losses at their Port Talbot | :17:06. | :17:08.
steelworkers, say they're "deeply concerned" that Europe could be | :17:09. | :17:12.
"sleepwalking" into an even deeper steel crisis. | :17:13. | :17:14.
Managers from the company have been giving evidence | :17:15. | :17:18.
Let's talk to our parliamentary correspondent David Cornock. | :17:19. | :17:30.
Those 750 job losses at Port Talbot were announced last month but today | :17:31. | :17:37.
was the first chance that MPs got to question the people who took the | :17:38. | :17:42.
decisions, who axed those jobs, on the spot, to find out more about the | :17:43. | :17:46.
reasons for them and to find out whether governments in Westminster | :17:47. | :17:49.
or Cardiff could have done more to prevent them. | :17:50. | :17:52.
Welsh steel may be considered among the best in the world but it now has | :17:53. | :17:55.
to compete with cheaper steel imported from China. | :17:56. | :17:57.
A key reason behind the job cuts at Port Talbot. | :17:58. | :18:00.
Now the steelworks' owner fears things could get worse if China gets | :18:01. | :18:03.
Tata Steel, alongside the steel industry in Europe in general | :18:04. | :18:13.
is deeply concerned about Europe apparently sleepwalking | :18:14. | :18:16.
into potentially an even greater steel crisis by the granting | :18:17. | :18:20.
The UK Government says that is a red herring and would not stop the EU | :18:21. | :18:26.
Another factor in the job losses is high energy costs. | :18:27. | :18:31.
A scheme to help intensive energy users has just been approved | :18:32. | :18:35.
in Europe but Tata Steel says it has not seen any money yet and has been | :18:36. | :18:39.
waiting two years for tens of millions of pounds. | :18:40. | :18:43.
One MP complained that the government subsidised wind farms | :18:44. | :18:47.
Why do we give government subsidies to companies which are not willing | :18:48. | :18:54.
Because you can't force them to buy British. | :18:55. | :19:01.
If we were a free market economy, we would not have to give them any | :19:02. | :19:09.
The minister said the UK Government would do everything it | :19:10. | :19:13.
could to ensure steel continues to be made at Port Talbot | :19:14. | :19:16.
and to help those who are losing their jobs there. | :19:17. | :19:21.
The MPs also heard from the steelworkers union Community, which | :19:22. | :19:32.
again demanded more action to stop cheap Chinese imports coming into | :19:33. | :19:36.
the UK and into the EU. The MPs will take away the evidence they heard | :19:37. | :19:41.
today, draw up their conclusions and should publish their report early | :19:42. | :19:42.
next month. Informal talks between Plaid Cymru, | :19:43. | :19:44.
the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats on a possible pact ahead | :19:45. | :19:47.
of May's Assembly elections have One proposal was for two | :19:48. | :19:49.
of the parties to withdraw candidates in seats where the third | :19:50. | :19:55.
party had a chance of victory. The Greens said the "electoral math | :19:56. | :19:58.
was there" but not The other big vote apart from that | :19:59. | :20:01.
Welsh election in May is a possible Plaid's leader Leanne Wood | :20:02. | :20:06.
launched her party's Wales in Europe campaign today, highlighting | :20:07. | :20:13.
what she says are the benefits The Rhondda Valley, | :20:14. | :20:18.
like large parts of Wales, is in the lower reaches of the EU | :20:19. | :20:25.
wealth league table, so it has had financial aid | :20:26. | :20:28.
from Brussels for the last 16 years. And it was at one of | :20:29. | :20:32.
the beneficiaries - this community centre and live | :20:33. | :20:36.
music venue in Porth - that Plaid launched its campaign | :20:37. | :20:39.
for Britain to stay in the EU. Even if the artwork | :20:40. | :20:43.
was not fully on message. Plaid leader Leanne Wood said | :20:44. | :20:47.
she is happy to campaign with other parties, despite the looming | :20:48. | :20:50.
election, but she wants to focus on the benefits of membership, | :20:51. | :20:54.
not the risks of exit. Last month, Leanne Wood criticised | :20:55. | :20:58.
the First Minister Carwyn Jones for failing to portray | :20:59. | :21:01.
what she called a "positive vision" in his head-to-head debate with Ukip | :21:02. | :21:04.
leader Nigel Farage and, speaking after his speech this | :21:05. | :21:08.
morning, Leanne Wood said the remain campaign will suffer if it relies | :21:09. | :21:12.
on a message of fear. That is the danger if there is not | :21:13. | :21:16.
collaboration and a sense of working together to put the | :21:17. | :21:22.
positives in Wales. I want to focus on those positive | :21:23. | :21:26.
reasons to remain a member There are many of them and I am | :21:27. | :21:31.
looking forward to working in close co-operation with the other parties | :21:32. | :21:39.
in order to put that positive case. What is most ironic is with Plaid's | :21:40. | :21:42.
call for an independent, self-governing Wales, | :21:43. | :21:44.
the vast majority of the EU's competencies will be devolved | :21:45. | :21:46.
to Wales when we leave the EU, from fishing to farming, | :21:47. | :21:49.
regional development, and so is it that Plaid Cymru wants | :21:50. | :21:50.
the Senedd just to be a rubber-stamping | :21:51. | :21:57.
centre for Brussels? David Cameron will meet EU leaders | :21:58. | :22:00.
next week where he hopes He may then call a referendum | :22:01. | :22:03.
for as soon as June. Already the campaigns are very | :22:04. | :22:09.
much under way. Rugby, and Sian Williams has become | :22:10. | :22:12.
Wales' first professional female player after signing a deal financed | :22:13. | :22:16.
by the Royal Air Force. The 25-year-old back row will be | :22:17. | :22:20.
released by the RAF to play full-time for the Welsh Rugby Union | :22:21. | :22:24.
for the next two years. Football, and Wales' | :22:25. | :22:30.
European Championship bound squad will fly to Stockholm to face | :22:31. | :22:32.
Sweden on the 5th of June. It will be the final friendly match | :22:33. | :22:36.
ahead of the tournament in France. Some sunshine today but a risk | :22:37. | :22:41.
of snow for some of us Just one or two showers | :22:42. | :22:45.
and lighter winds. This picture taken by one of weather | :22:46. | :22:54.
watchers in Abergavenny. Good weather for climbing | :22:55. | :22:58.
Sugarloaf Mountain. This evening will be dry, clear | :22:59. | :23:01.
and cold with a widespread frost. Overnight, cloud will increase, | :23:02. | :23:05.
bringing one or two showers. Temperatures inland falling below | :23:06. | :23:10.
freezing with one or two mist Here's the picture for eight | :23:11. | :23:14.
in the morning. One or two showers but most | :23:15. | :23:20.
of the country dry. Some cloud but bright | :23:21. | :23:25.
in parts of the north. So more cloud tomorrow | :23:26. | :23:32.
but still some dry, bright weather. The best of the sunshine in parts | :23:33. | :23:38.
of the north and east. However, scattered showers | :23:39. | :23:42.
are expected during the afternoon. Heavy in places and | :23:43. | :23:46.
wintry on high ground. Top temperatures between four | :23:47. | :23:49.
and eight Celsius with light winds. Friday, more dry weather with spots | :23:50. | :23:53.
of light rain in places. Some sunshine in parts | :23:54. | :23:59.
of the north and west. The forecast for the weekend | :24:00. | :24:05.
is more complicated. Low pressure will move | :24:06. | :24:11.
in from the Atlantic, bringing rain. And where the rain hits the cold | :24:12. | :24:17.
air, snow is likely, The big question mark | :24:18. | :24:22.
is about the track the low The low could go further south | :24:23. | :24:29.
and that means the cold air in the north would be further | :24:30. | :24:37.
south as well. What we do know is that it is going | :24:38. | :24:40.
to feel cold this weekend. Some rain likely, while at | :24:41. | :24:45.
the moment the greatest risk of snow is on high ground in mid and north | :24:46. | :24:48.
Wales, the hills and mountains. A little snow on the Heads | :24:49. | :24:52.
of the Valleys and maybe During Sunday, the rain, | :24:53. | :24:55.
sleet and snow will gradually clear. Next week, a cold start | :24:56. | :25:01.
with sunshine and frost. Dry for a while but turning more | :25:02. | :25:05.
unsettled by Wednesday with rain. In the meantime, we have got some | :25:06. | :25:25.
frost tonight. Some sunshine but also a few scattered showers. And | :25:26. | :25:30.
keep an eye on the forecast for the weekend. It is by no means | :25:31. | :25:34.
straightforward at the moment. I will keep you posted. | :25:35. | :25:37.
A man from Cardiff accused of helping his teenage friend | :25:38. | :25:40.
travel to Syria to fight alongside his brother | :25:41. | :25:42.
with so-called Islamic State is behind bars tonight. | :25:43. | :25:44.
Kristen Brekke, along with two other men, was accused of assisting | :25:45. | :25:46.
Aseel Muthana in the preparation of an act of terrorism. | :25:47. | :25:49.
Sentencing him to four and a half years, the judge said Brekke | :25:50. | :25:52.
was "perhaps naive" and may have acted out of "misguided friendship". | :25:53. | :25:54.
I'll be back with our late bulletin after the BBC News at 10pm. | :25:55. | :26:01.
From all of us on the programme, good evening. | :26:02. | :26:02. |
