He helped a teenager travel to Syria to fight with so-called Islamic | :00:07. | :00:09.
And is Swansea's billion pounds tidal lagoon project under threat? | :00:10. | :00:14.
An independent review will examine the cost and value of wave power | :00:15. | :00:36.
A man from Cardiff, accused of helping his teenage friend travel | :00:37. | :00:39.
to Syria, to fight alongside his brother with so-called | :00:40. | :00:43.
Islamic State, is behind bars tonight. | :00:44. | :00:47.
Kristen Brekke, along with two other men, was accused of assisting | :00:48. | :00:50.
Aseel Muthana in the preparation of an act of terrorism. | :00:51. | :00:53.
Sentencing him to four and a half years, the Judge said Brek | :00:54. | :00:55.
was "perhaps naive" and may have acted out of "misguided friendship". | :00:56. | :00:58.
For almost a month, Kristen Brekke has been arriving at the Old Bailey | :00:59. | :01:08.
each morning to hear the case against him and two others. | :01:09. | :01:10.
Tonight, the young man from Grangetown is behind bars | :01:11. | :01:12.
Along with Forhad Rahman and Adeel Ulhaq, they have been | :01:13. | :01:17.
found guilty of helping this Cardiff teenager, | :01:18. | :01:19.
Aseel Muthana, travel to Syria to fight jihad. | :01:20. | :01:25.
A lot of people think it is just to put this flag | :01:26. | :01:27.
Nasser Muthana, Aseel's older brother, was one of two infamous | :01:28. | :01:31.
recruits to so-called IS who appeared in a propaganda | :01:32. | :01:33.
video entitled 'There is no life without jihad'. | :01:34. | :01:39.
Aseel was desperate to join him and fight | :01:40. | :01:41.
Brekke was one of three men that helped him do just that. | :01:42. | :01:46.
Brekke first met Aseel while they were working at this cafe | :01:47. | :01:49.
in Grangetown, where they became friends. | :01:50. | :01:52.
The Old Bailey heard Brekke helped him get and store | :01:53. | :01:54.
a new passport as his parents had confiscated his original. | :01:55. | :01:58.
They say he also bought and stored Army gear and boots for him. | :01:59. | :02:01.
The other men provided him with money and expertise | :02:02. | :02:03.
to fund his jihadi journey in February 2014. | :02:04. | :02:09.
It was more than a year ago that Brekke, then 18, | :02:10. | :02:11.
was arrested at his home in Grangetown by officers | :02:12. | :02:15.
of the Wales Extremism and Counter-Terrorism Unit | :02:16. | :02:19.
and charged with assisting in the preparation of | :02:20. | :02:21.
At the time, his mother, who is Welsh, and his father, | :02:22. | :02:25.
who is of Norwegian ancestry, confirmed their son had converted | :02:26. | :02:27.
They said no one else in the family was a Muslim. | :02:28. | :02:33.
This footage of him on a school trip at the age of ten shows a happy, | :02:34. | :02:36.
contented young lad who is very patriotic. | :02:37. | :02:41.
He took his declaration of faith at this small mosque just a few | :02:42. | :02:44.
streets from his home which is renowned for | :02:45. | :02:46.
We taught him so we knew him for quite a while. | :02:47. | :02:50.
I think since the age of 15 and now he is at the age of 19. | :02:51. | :02:54.
So we have not seen any extremism in him. | :02:55. | :03:17.
They fantasise that what labour Lord was not Cardiff but Serie A, and two | :03:18. | :03:27.
months later that was a reality. The strategy that... | :03:28. | :03:29.
The Prevent strategy is the Home Office funded scheme | :03:30. | :03:31.
Aseel Muthana was being monitored by Prevent unsuccessfully. | :03:32. | :03:34.
His father says the system failed his family. | :03:35. | :03:38.
I don't think that trust has always been there. | :03:39. | :03:40.
I am not sure if in this case this was the particular reason. | :03:41. | :03:43.
Certainly, a stronger degree of trust and communication | :03:44. | :03:45.
across-the-board would mean there are less likely to be | :03:46. | :03:47.
instances where things fall through gaps in the net. | :03:48. | :03:56.
21,000 Muslims live in Cardiff, the vast majority law-abiding, | :03:57. | :03:59.
but tonight, with another from their community behind bars, | :04:00. | :04:01.
they are searching for answers about how to tackle those | :04:02. | :04:03.
The army base, where a Welsh soldier was found dead, | :04:04. | :04:09.
had a "highly sexualised" environment and some senior staff | :04:10. | :04:11.
saw young female recruits as a "sexual challenge." | :04:12. | :04:14.
18-year-old Private Cheryl James, from Llangollen, was found | :04:15. | :04:18.
with a single gunshot wound to the head at Deepcut Barracks | :04:19. | :04:20.
in 1995 amid claims of bullying and sexual assault. | :04:21. | :04:29.
Tata Steel, who've announced heavy job losses at their Port Talbot | :04:30. | :04:32.
steelworkers, say they're "deeply concerned" that Europe could be | :04:33. | :04:34.
"sleepwalking" into an even deeper steel crisis and there's no | :04:35. | :04:37.
guarantee the industry will avoid further job losses. | :04:38. | :04:39.
Managers from the company have been giving evidence to MPs | :04:40. | :04:42.
at Westminster, after 750 people lost their jobs in Port Talbot last | :04:43. | :04:45.
There are serious questions tonight over the future | :04:46. | :04:55.
The UK government has announced an independent review | :04:56. | :04:58.
of Tidal Lagoon Energy saying - more work needs to be done | :04:59. | :05:01.
to determine whether it presents value for money. | :05:02. | :05:03.
The Welsh Government says it's disappointed by the decision - | :05:04. | :05:06.
and the company behind the project says it's concerned | :05:07. | :05:08.
It can be a long walk to the sea when the tide goes out | :05:09. | :05:20.
in Swansea Bay but maybe not as long as the possible wait for a decision | :05:21. | :05:23.
As the UK Government announced an independent review | :05:24. | :05:28.
of the feasibility and practicality of this kind of energy, | :05:29. | :05:31.
others see the news as a delaying tactic over a final decision. | :05:32. | :05:34.
I am disappointed for the people of Swansea East because they are | :05:35. | :05:37.
I am disappointed for the people of Wales because this | :05:38. | :05:44.
And I am disappointed they play these games | :05:45. | :05:49.
The chief executive of tidal lagoon energy has warned the UK Government | :05:50. | :05:55.
it must decide in the next few weeks whether or not it is going to invest | :05:56. | :05:59.
Building work has been delayed because every time they come | :06:00. | :06:06.
to discuss how much public money will be put forward, | :06:07. | :06:08.
Responding to the forthcoming review, the Chief Executive of tidal | :06:09. | :06:13.
lagoon energy said in a statement, we welcome the opportunity to put | :06:14. | :06:16.
the case for a major programme of cost-effective power. | :06:17. | :06:22.
This is a home-grown source of power, the natural way | :06:23. | :06:24.
He said the review should not impact the finalisation | :06:25. | :06:28.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change says | :06:29. | :06:34.
the developers will take part in the review while discussions | :06:35. | :06:37.
While that might be the case, businesses in the local area are now | :06:38. | :06:44.
concerned about the time and money they have already invested | :06:45. | :06:46.
The delay now places great uncertainty and there are not many | :06:47. | :06:55.
new opportunities in Port Talbot, Swansea Bay of the type that can | :06:56. | :06:58.
employ people to the extent that the tidal lagoon can. | :06:59. | :07:01.
From that point of view, a great disappointment. | :07:02. | :07:02.
We have been working very hard for over two years. | :07:03. | :07:05.
And as an industry group, supporting tidal lagoon, | :07:06. | :07:07.
our expenditure has run into hundreds of thousands of pounds. | :07:08. | :07:12.
While the debate over tidal lagoon energy continues to ebb and flow, | :07:13. | :07:19.
it is hoped this delay does not signal the end | :07:20. | :07:23.
Work to repair a burst water main supplying around 1,700 households | :07:24. | :07:34.
across parts of Carmarthenshire has been completed. | :07:35. | :07:36.
Welsh Water began carrying out repair work last night and say | :07:37. | :07:39.
supplies to customers affected are now being restored. | :07:40. | :07:47.
Football, and Wales' European Championship bound squad | :07:48. | :07:48.
will fly to Stockholm to face Sweden on the 5th of June. | :07:49. | :07:51.
It will be the final friendly match ahead of the tournament in France. | :07:52. | :07:58.
The chance of snow for some this weekend - | :07:59. | :08:00.
A very tricky forecast for the weekend, snow for some of us but | :08:01. | :08:15.
rain on the way as well. In the meantime dry for most of us with | :08:16. | :08:19.
frost and the odd fog patch, cloud increasing overnight with one or two | :08:20. | :08:24.
showers. Into tomorrow morning a frosty start in places with heavy | :08:25. | :08:29.
fog slowly lifting. Sunshine in places but more cloud around | :08:30. | :08:33.
compared to today, some showers as well, when today in a few spots. | :08:34. | :08:37.
Across the rest of the UK fog patches in Northern Ireland will | :08:38. | :08:44.
slowly left, one to icy patches in the North Midlands and the Peak | :08:45. | :08:49.
District and showers in the West. Elsewhere pride with some sunshine. | :08:50. | :08:53.
Closer to home sunshine in places but generally more cloud than today. | :08:54. | :08:59.
Showers moving inland and they could be quite sharp, when today on high | :09:00. | :09:04.
grounds, a high of seven Celsius. Most of the country dry tomorrow | :09:05. | :09:10.
night and will be cloud remains broken a chance of frost and fog | :09:11. | :09:16.
patches. Into Friday, most of the country dry with some chain breaking | :09:17. | :09:19.
through but later than the day we may see some showers reached | :09:20. | :09:23.
southern counties and it becomes more complicated than to the weekend | :09:24. | :09:26.
with low pressure moving in from the Atlantic which will bring more rain | :09:27. | :09:31.
with it but as it moves against Calder a, the risk of some snow. At | :09:32. | :09:36.
the moment is now most likely on hills and mountains and keep = on | :09:37. | :09:44.
the forecast over the next couple of days, looking like staying cold on | :09:45. | :09:46.
Sunday and into next week. Nos da. The Wales Report with | :09:47. | :09:52.
Huw Edwards next tonight. That's Wales Today, | :09:53. | :09:54.
thank you for watching. From all of us on the | :09:55. | :09:56.
programme, good night. | :09:57. | :09:59. |
