The future of the Welsh steel industry under scrutiny

claims not enough is being done about cheap Chinese imports.

First Aston Martin now sports car maker TVR could base

And the warning not to rush in the new Welsh school curriculum.

The crisis facing the Welsh steel industry is once again under

Industry bosses here have accused the UK government of being one

of the ringleaders in blocking attempts to prevent cheap Chinese

They also claimed that the EU had effectively put up a sign

encouraging China to dump its products in Europe.

Our political editor Nick Servini has more.

If we ever needed confirmation that the problems for the steel

industry were far from over, we got it today in spades

from senior figures of Wales' biggest plants.

The steel industry, not just in Wales, and actually not just

in the UK, but throughout Europe, currently suffers from what could be

described as a perfect storm of negative forces.

It has been well publicised over the last couple of years

that we have been suffering from a huge influx of Chinese material.

We have seen prices continue to drop, we have seen imports

from China increase into the UK and without further urgent action

from Wales and the UK, I think the situation is quite

Prices have stabilised slightly in the last month,

but the outlook again for us is not particularly bright.

They were giving evidence to the Assembly Members

on the Assembly's business committee but the criticism was directed far

Welsh steelworkers made their feelings known on a march

Today the bosses said the European Commission should be

doing more to deal with what they say is cheap Chinese steel

Yesterday in the US, a tariff of 266% was introduced

The equivalent tariff in the European Union is now 16%.

The committee was told that the result was that

the European Union had effectively put up a sign for Chinese producers

saying please dump here, you are welcome.

We see the European Commission has not really having the teeth

to actually deal with the flooding of Chinese exports coming in not

just to the UK but Europe as a whole.

At the heart of this is the attitude towards trade tariffs.

The UK Government gave evidence today saying it is putting

Ministers at Westminster believe more can be done

But the industry wants Britain to push for a much

At the moment, that is being resisted because of fears

there would be too much of a lurch towards protectionism.

The European Commission has launched a number of investigations

into steel imports but there is growing concern that more action

needs to be taken to try and secure the remaining industry in Wales,

after 750 losses were announced in Port Talbot in January.

They have got to wake up and smell the coffee on this.

At the end of the day, we have got to have an industry

Many in the industry admit there is no silver bullet for steel

Ford and Toyota are already well established in Wales.

Aston Martin is joining them now another luxury sports car

manufacturer says it's considering a new production line here.

TVR says a site in South Wales is one of three around the UK that

TVR, an iconic British brand that could soon have a distinctly

It has had a new lease of life after it was bought by a group

of investors in 2014 and last year, it announced it was building

a brandnew two seater sports car designed and built in Britain,

The company says it has stayed deliberately tightlipped

about the new line so far but today confirmed South Wales was one

of three sites it was considering to build it.

We could easily be talking about 400 to 600 jobs in the future.

And if you put on then the usual knockon jobs,

that takes it well over 1000, and I think what this car company

would like to do as well is not to use normal distribution systems,

retailers, they would like people to come down and take delivery

of their car and possibly at a racing site, so it could well

be afraid to come down to south Wales, they would likely facility

on the Circuit of Wales, if that occurs.

It comes a week after another iconic British brand,

Aston Martin, announced that it would build its new car in St Athan

in the Vale of Glamorgan, creating 750 jobs.

The Welsh Government gave an undisclosed amount of money

to Aston Martin as part of the deal, but it is not clear whether TVR

TVR says it will make a decision on where the new site will be

in the coming week is and production could start as soon as next year.

A 66 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder

after a 65 year old woman was found dead in a flat in Cardiff.

She was discovered in the Century Wharf block of flats

in Cardiff Bay earlier this afternoon.

Some hospital wards run by Cardiff and the Vale University Healthboard

have closed due to a Norovirus outbreak.

The healthboard is advising family and friends not to visit patients

in hospital if they are feeling unwell

The Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Crabb, has been criticised

for missing most of a Welsh debate in the House of Commons.

MPs were told Mr Crabb had "parliamentary business elsewhere"

but he was photographed at a Conservative Party lunch

The Wales Office said it was common for junior ministers to reply

There's a "fair chance" schools in Wales will start teaching

a new curriculum by the deadline of 2021.

That's according to the man who drafted the changes.

It's been a year since Professor Graham Donaldson

published his plans, which include making computer skills

as central to learning as literacy and numeracy.

But one union says the timetable set by the Welsh government

Here's our education correspondent Bethan Lewis.

It was at this time that the present curriculum was introduced but a big

change to the way school children are taught and the way they learn

This school is one of the schools helping to develop

the new curriculum, building on work it is already doing in weaving

different skills and subjects within lessons.

Pupils are not just receiving distinct subjects, 835 period week

when they move from history to geography to IT.

They are now being exposed to a broader range of skills.

The students do not even recognise necessarily

that they are being exposed to the skills.

The new curriculum aims to make digital and computer skills central

to all learning within schools, along with literacy and numeracy.

It is less focused on formal testing and it aims for more flexibility

for teachers to tailor their lessons around the central curriculum.

At an event in Cardiff today, the man who recommended the changes

a year ago gave an update on progress so far.

He says has been encouraged by the level of enthusiasm that

will help in delivering the changes within the timetable set

There is an impatience to get moving with it and other people are saying

it does not look as if the time is long enough for us to be able

to come to terms with the new curriculum.

I think that the process that has been put in place as a pretty fair

chance of getting us to the point at which by 2018 and beyond schools

will be able to move forward in relation to thinking

about the curriculum and its indications

The current curriculum has been in place since the late 1980s.

Some of those here will be leading the change.

There will be many meetings like these of education experts,

teachers and officials before the new curriculum is taught

But they want the teaching structure ready in two years and four children

everywhere to be taught the new curriculum in five.

Some people here think that is a tough timetable for such

We are supposed to get all this done and dusted by 2018.

Let's do it properly and take our time and build

on the enthusiasm that is there and get it finished a good

curriculum for children in the 21st century.

Change to the way young people are taught is welcomed

but all here agree that the hard work of putting the ideas

into practice is only just beginning.
