Tonight, praise for the teachers' calmness.

Port Talbot steelworks has been put up for sale tonight.

Along with all of its parent company Tata's UK operations.

The decision was taken by the company board in India.

Port Talbot is the biggest steel plant in Britain and employs

Many thousands more people in the wider economy depend upon it.

Our business correspondent Brian Meechan is in Port Talbot

Brian, tell us what happened at the meeting?

There was a delegation that went to India including people from the

community Steelworkers union and also the local MP here and they were

pressing the case for the survival plan that had been put forward by

the local management team here and hoping that it would get the backing

in Mumbai. That meant 750 job losses here, but to protect over 3000 jobs

in the longer term, but it did mean ?100 million of investment coming

from Tata Steel, a company that has already invested very heavily in

this and it seems that Tata Steel has decided that that investment

will not be forthcoming. It is not just Port Talbort, it is also other

places in the area. It will be interesting to see if other

companies come in to rescue Tata Steel when it has that 100 -- ?1

million per day loss that we were speaking about. Now we speak to

Barry Evans, a worker from the steelworks. This was not the news

you want to do here. Unfortunately not. We have not seen a statement

yet and it is the responsibility of Tata Steel to inform the workforce.

I would not like to speak your late on it. If it is true, I would expect

Tata Steel to be a responsible seller. They have always promised as

they would be a responsible seller so we will hold them to that. We

will not allow them to walk away from us. We will be in full

discussions with all parties. Calls tonight for the assembly to be

recalled. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, has said the UK Government

must intervene. Would you back"? Definitely. Like I said, until we

see the full detail of the plan, this is a foundation industry, those

two blast furnaces are some of the best in the world, the quality of

steel is some of the best in the world, the workforce is second to

none. They are highly skilled people. We would expect the governor

to back us. One of the steel industry has gone from the whole of

the UK, it will never recover. It will never come back. Tell us

briefly what impact this will have on the workers in there and the

wider community. Obviously, it will be distressing, but we have not seen

the detail yet and I am not prepared to speculate on it. Until I have

seen an official statement, it is the responsibility of Tata Steel to

come forward and make a statement to the workforce and then we can get in

to the detail of it and then began work on a plan but hopefully some

good partners to work with. Barry Evans, thank you very much. Well,

there is, it has to be said, shop here tonight. There was real hope

amongst the unions that this rescue plan was going to be getting that

backing from Tata Steel and it would allow them that breathing space of a

year or two years to sort out the problems here and turn things

around. Now it is certainly an uncertain future for the workers

here and for the local community. And with Port Talbot

steelworks now for sale, for those who live and work

in the community? The decision to sell will not only

affect workers but also thousands of people who indirectly

rely on the steelworks Our reporter Ben Price has spent

the day in Port Talbot. Think Port Talbot -

think steelworks. It's the foundation of a town that

has a strong community spirit - a spirit that's now

being truly tested. For steelworker Vince Lewis -

this is his regular walk home From a family of steelworkers -

he knows all too well of the importance of the works

to households throughout the area. It has been a difficult couple of

weeks. People have already finished and people are having to look at

alternative employment. There has been help and support available for

that but it is a worrying time. Especially younger people who have

taken on mortgages recently, taking on homes. It is very worrying. For

others, the anxiety of job cuts is affecting daily life. You work with

people for 25 years in the selection process. Some had been not selected,

some had been selected. Everybody is just worried about their jobs. The

decision taken by Tata Steel today not only affects the Steelworkers

themselves but also the various industries involved with the

planned. Everybody has some type of connection. Behind the railway

station, infamous file is breakfast rolls, is Mandy's burger van. 27

years we have been here. We have lots of customers from all over but

a lot of them are from the steelworks. So what will it mean for

this business, without the town's biggest employer? People just can't

afford it. They will all be looking for work. Now a local councillor,

this man worked for the planned for over 20 years. He has seen the

workforce reduced from over 20,000 in the 1960s to around 4000 today.

The community here have got heavy hearts today. They have met the

challenges and the unions have met the tasks over the years, so the

workforce have made tremendous efforts in spite of all of this. But

as that separates now appear to be in vain, with plans to sell out, the

question remains as to who, if anyone, Stan -- can step in to save

the lifeblood of Port Talbort. Tributes have been paid to a five

year old boy who died from Capel Bangor near Aberystwyth,

and 77-year-old Margaretta Jones were among four people who died

continue to work in partnership with Tata Steel and the workforce, I'm

the fight will always be on to ensure that we continue to make

steel in Port Talbort and if that is under the ownership of Tata Steel or
