Climate activists from across Britain have set up camp

near the Ffos y Fran opencast site above Merthyr Tydfil.

Local people who are fighting plans to extend the mine operation

to near by Nant Llesg have welcomed the move.

The company which operates the site, Miller Argent, says it provides well

paid jobs and supports the steel industry in Wales.

It is one of Europe's biggest sites.

This land is what locals say they fight to protect.

On a wet and windy mountain, a network of activists have arrived to

cultivate and on opencast mining. I came down yesterday and built an

incredible camp on the hillside. What you see is the upper valley.

It is wonderful and unique. Behind me, if you can just get the shot, if

I step aside, it is a raised bog. The source of the Valley stream.

What you see will be 70 million cubic tonnes of soil. It will

smother, blanket the area. The camp has been set up over the May Day

bank holiday. They plan to leave on Wednesday, but locals hope it will

focus the minds of politicians and the public ahead of the election. An

investigation is under way following a suspicious fire at school.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to St David's Junior

and Infants school in Cwmbran just after 8pm last night.

The fire started in an outdoor storage container and spread

The wine industry in Wales is expected to grow significantly

over the next 20 years,according to the group representing

One company in Monmouthshire has doubled its operation this week -

and is now selling its wine to customers in France.

It's been made since Roman times - and now in 17 commercial

The one near Monmouth, the latest to expand,

planting vines covering the size of seven football pitches.

Good drainage, plenty of sun, and not too much rain.

20,000 bottles of wine a year from this field alone.

It's not cheap, needing ?3 million of investment in land and equipment.

But the owners predict a boom in Welsh winemaking.

50 vineyards will be operating here in 20 years time.

That is based on the growth of the wine industry in the Nova Scotia,

for example, the eastern seaboard of Canada. You think, surely they

cannot grow it to make wine, but the climate is virtually identical to

the Welsh climate. It is a huge tourist industry. I don't know how

many vineyards. A massive industry. This site gets 3,000 visitors each

year for wine now sold to perhaps the most demanding

of customers of all. A recent order was from
