fan. Indeed, Joe. Joe Wilson there for us with the

:00:00.:00:00.

Tonight's headlines: The trial begins of a former

:00:07.:00:09.

North Wales Police superintendent accused of historic sex abuse.

:00:10.:00:11.

In his last address before retiring, the Archbishop of Wales urges

:00:12.:00:14.

the Church to embrace same-sex marriage.

:00:15.:00:16.

And could we see four longer days and one half-day in the school week?

:00:17.:00:21.

The changes explored in research for the Welsh Government.

:00:22.:00:38.

A court has heard how a former senior North Wales police officer,

:00:39.:00:42.

who faces sexual charges, was seen at a house frequented

:00:43.:00:46.

Gordon Anglesea denies three charges of indecent assault and one serious

:00:47.:00:52.

sexual offence dating back to the 1980s.

:00:53.:00:56.

A jury at Mold Crown Court heard how one of his alleged victims claims

:00:57.:01:00.

he was handed between abusers like a handbag.

:01:01.:01:04.

Gordon Anglesea arriving at court today.

:01:05.:01:09.

Once a senior police officer rising to the rank of superintendent,

:01:10.:01:13.

now facing claims he sexually abused teenage boys.

:01:14.:01:18.

The architecture of St Joseph's School in Wrexham has changed

:01:19.:01:21.

in the last 30 years but, here in the early '80s,

:01:22.:01:25.

there was a Home Office attendance centre for young offenders.

:01:26.:01:28.

It was run, the jury was told, by the then

:01:29.:01:31.

Inspector Gordon Anglesea and it was there that three

:01:32.:01:34.

of the alleged offences are said to have taken place.

:01:35.:01:38.

Opening the case, the prosecution told the jury the alleged victim

:01:39.:01:42.

He'd been sent to the attendance centre by a juvenile

:01:43.:01:46.

He claims Gordon Anglesea indecently assaulted him

:01:47.:01:51.

On a third occasion, there was a serious sexual assault.

:01:52.:01:57.

The second alleged victim, the prosecution said,

:01:58.:01:59.

had been a resident at the Bryn Alyn children's home in Wrexham.

:02:00.:02:02.

There, he said, he was sexually abused by the owner, John Allen.

:02:03.:02:07.

In 2014, Allen was jailed for life after he was convicted of sexually

:02:08.:02:12.

In her opening speech, Eleanor Laws QC said the man

:02:13.:02:19.

describes how John Allen trafficed him to other men.

:02:20.:02:22.

He says he was handed around like a handbag, she said.

:02:23.:02:26.

He's recently identified one of those other men

:02:27.:02:28.

The jury's also been told that, later in the trial, it will hear

:02:29.:02:34.

from a witness who said he saw Gordon Anglesea at a house

:02:35.:02:37.

Gordon Anglesea denies all the charges and the case continues.

:02:38.:02:44.

Roger Pinney, BBC Wales today at Mold Crown Court

:02:45.:02:49.

News just in this evening from the Paralympics in Rio,

:02:50.:02:52.

and within the past half an hour, Aaron Moores from Swansea has won

:02:53.:02:56.

The current world record holder said it was a dream come true.

:02:57.:03:04.

His Great Britain team-mate, Scott Quin, won silver.

:03:05.:03:09.

In his last address before retirement, the Archbishop of Wales

:03:10.:03:12.

has urged the Church to embrace same-sex marriage.

:03:13.:03:16.

Retiring after 14 years leading the Church in Wales,

:03:17.:03:19.

Dr Barry Morgan chose to focus on homosexuality

:03:20.:03:22.

He told the church's governing body they must not be selective

:03:23.:03:27.

Kate Sidford and wife Del Harris would have loved a full

:03:28.:03:36.

church wedding with hymns and all but it was not to be.

:03:37.:03:41.

I believe that marriage should be open to everybody.

:03:42.:03:45.

And you should have the choice of how to do it.

:03:46.:03:50.

A civil wedding in a registry office if that is what you want

:03:51.:03:54.

or the chance of marrying in a church.

:03:55.:03:59.

When members of the Church in Wales' governing body voted

:04:00.:04:01.

on the issue last September, the result showed a majority

:04:02.:04:05.

in favour but not a big enough majority to change the law.

:04:06.:04:10.

After that, the Archbishop told me that he believed it would be foolish

:04:11.:04:14.

for the bishops to bring forward a bill to try to change

:04:15.:04:17.

But a year on, he's returned to the subject and made it the focus

:04:18.:04:23.

for his final address to the governing body.

:04:24.:04:26.

It is, in fact, about freedom from all that diminishes

:04:27.:04:31.

No Christian, I hope, today would ever argue

:04:32.:04:37.

that slavery worked but, for 19 centuries, the Church

:04:38.:04:42.

It was a speech which brought out strong reactions.

:04:43.:04:48.

Whilst really encouraged by it, I wasn't expecting him to do this.

:04:49.:04:55.

After all, this was his last governing body.

:04:56.:04:58.

He had an opportunity to say what he liked.

:04:59.:05:02.

I was sorry that the Archbishop didn't take the opportunity

:05:03.:05:04.

to explore something new, that he returned to a theme

:05:05.:05:07.

that he has explored many times before.

:05:08.:05:10.

It was a missed opportunity to give us something

:05:11.:05:12.

fresh and new at the end of his time as archbishop.

:05:13.:05:17.

Afterwards, the Archbishop explained why he'd chosen to make gay marriage

:05:18.:05:21.

I think the fundamental issue I'm dealing with is not so much same-sex

:05:22.:05:27.

relationships as the way we interpret and read the Bible.

:05:28.:05:31.

It's a far deeper question than same-sex relationships.

:05:32.:05:35.

The Church has seen many changes since the Archbishop took up

:05:36.:05:38.

Where it goes from here will be for someone else to oversee.

:05:39.:05:48.

Unemployment in Wales has fallen again with the gap between Wales

:05:49.:05:50.

and the rest of the UK continuing to widen.

:05:51.:05:54.

The rate here fell to 4.1% between May and July compared

:05:55.:05:58.

The number of people unemployed is 10,000 lower than three months

:05:59.:06:04.

earlier and down 35,000 compared to last year.

:06:05.:06:10.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion

:06:11.:06:13.

of murder following the death of a woman in Swansea.

:06:14.:06:16.

The body of 42-year-old Alison Jane Farr-Davies was found

:06:17.:06:20.

at a house in the Hafod area of the city yesterday afternoon.

:06:21.:06:23.

The man remains in custody and police are appealing for witnesses.

:06:24.:06:29.

A woman accused of murdering her father by deliberately starting

:06:30.:06:31.

a house fire in Cardiff has appeared in court.

:06:32.:06:35.

Robert Sadler died at his home in the Llanrumney area

:06:36.:06:37.

Emma Sadler was initially arrested and detained under

:06:38.:06:41.

the Mental Health Act before being rearrested this week.

:06:42.:06:45.

She's due to appear in court again next January.

:06:46.:06:49.

The Welsh Secretary, Alun Cairns, has suggested that Welsh Government

:06:50.:06:52.

ministers in Cardiff Bay should reduce the number of bureaucrats

:06:53.:06:56.

to help them manage cuts from Westminster.

:06:57.:06:59.

He was speaking after a report said the Welsh Government was facing cuts

:07:00.:07:02.

of 3% until 2020 and that the cuts could be made significantly

:07:03.:07:07.

worse if EU aid wasn't replaced after Brexit.

:07:08.:07:12.

We've seen across Whitehall significant cutbacks

:07:13.:07:14.

in the civil service, for example, but the output hasn't

:07:15.:07:18.

I'm not sure we've seen the same scale-back of civil service

:07:19.:07:23.

bureaucrats in Cardiff Bay or in the Welsh government.

:07:24.:07:28.

There are savings that can be made that don't impact

:07:29.:07:30.

A report has found that the death of a patient at Glan Clwyd Hospital

:07:31.:07:37.

in Denbighshire was potentially avoidable had he been given

:07:38.:07:39.

The Public Services Ombudsman says it was a travesty that the patient,

:07:40.:07:45.

who had a history of chronic renal failure, waited over 12 hours to see

:07:46.:07:49.

Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board has apologised for the failings and says

:07:50.:07:54.

changes have been made to the way patients are admitted and assessed.

:07:55.:08:00.

Businesses and people living in Carmarthen

:08:01.:08:02.

are being given their first glimpse of what two of the town

:08:03.:08:05.

centre's streets could look like if regeneration plans go ahead.

:08:06.:08:09.

All this week, Carmarthen Town Regeneration Forum will be

:08:10.:08:11.

consulting the public about plans to pedestrianise King Street

:08:12.:08:15.

and create a town square at the end of Jackson's Lane.

:08:16.:08:21.

A four-and-a-half day school week - that's one option explored

:08:22.:08:24.

in research for the Welsh Government.

:08:25.:08:26.

A report by the Public Policy Institute for Wales says changing

:08:27.:08:30.

the school week so there are some longer and some shorter days

:08:31.:08:33.

could save money and help free up time for training teachers.

:08:34.:08:38.

But it also highlights concerns about the impact

:08:39.:08:40.

on childcare and activities outside the classroom.

:08:41.:08:43.

Here's our education correspondent, Bethan Lewis.

:08:44.:08:46.

Science is the last lesson of the day for these new pupils.

:08:47.:08:52.

The school day here starts at 8:40am and

:08:53.:08:55.

But could some longer and some shorter days be good for

:08:56.:09:02.

Headteacher Helen Jones says there are pros

:09:03.:09:08.

and cons but welcomes a

:09:09.:09:09.

It would definitely require the support of the workforce,

:09:10.:09:16.

parents and pupils to enable it to work but I think it

:09:17.:09:19.

We need to know it's going to impact positively on our young people

:09:20.:09:24.

so they really do get something from it.

:09:25.:09:27.

In parts of Scotland, schools have four longer days

:09:28.:09:29.

from Monday to Thursday and a half-day on Friday.

:09:30.:09:32.

That could give pupils and teachers free time on a Friday afternoon

:09:33.:09:37.

or could be an opportunity for teachers to go on training

:09:38.:09:39.

courses and, for the pupils, a chance to do out-of-school

:09:40.:09:43.

With tighter budgets, there's an argument too that it

:09:44.:09:48.

For parents at this Swansea primary school, any change would suit

:09:49.:09:54.

Very challenging for me as a single mother.

:09:55.:10:00.

Having to work around picking up at midday instead of normal time

:10:01.:10:03.

at 3pm, that would mean shortening my Friday.

:10:04.:10:07.

I'd be quite happy with it but, then again, I don't work.

:10:08.:10:10.

I'd quite enjoy the children being home on a Friday afternoon.

:10:11.:10:17.

By taking a shorter day and making other days longer,

:10:18.:10:20.

After-school rugby training's in full flow.

:10:21.:10:26.

The research by the Public Policy Institute for Wales notes concerns

:10:27.:10:30.

that a longer school day could make these sorts of after-school

:10:31.:10:33.

The purpose of the Public Policy Institute is to

:10:34.:10:39.

In that way, we enrich the debate around policy and we get to look

:10:40.:10:47.

at the possible impact of radical ideas, like this one.

:10:48.:10:51.

As well as arguments around varying the length of school days,

:10:52.:10:55.

some are also calling for shorter school terms

:10:56.:10:57.

The Welsh government says it's not going to introduce a policy

:10:58.:11:02.

across Wales of four-and-a-half day school weeks but it will look

:11:03.:11:06.

at some of the ideas raised in the report as it focuses

:11:07.:11:09.

And, in the end, that's the key issue.

:11:10.:11:14.

Making the school day longer or shorter is unlikely to happen

:11:15.:11:17.

without a strong case that it would improve the quality

:11:18.:11:21.

Let's get the weather forecast now with Behnaz Akhgar.

:11:22.:11:28.

Well, we had a taste of summer today with the temperatures up to 28

:11:29.:11:31.

More fine, warm weather heading our way tomorrow with the risk

:11:32.:11:39.

So, through the night, we will see some clear skies,

:11:40.:11:43.

especially across the South East, but all the while, the cloud

:11:44.:11:46.

We will see some low-level cloud, mist and fog with overnight lows

:11:47.:11:50.

Things a little bit more unstable as we go through tomorrow

:11:51.:11:56.

First thing tomorrow morning, we will see quite a bit of cloud,

:11:57.:12:00.

mist and fog but, through the morning,

:12:01.:12:02.

it will start to brighten up and most of us should see

:12:03.:12:05.

some bright sunny spells as we go through the morning

:12:06.:12:07.

For the rest of the British Isles, we have a weather front bringing

:12:08.:12:18.

rain into Northern Ireland. Quite a bit of sea fog for eastern parts of

:12:19.:12:22.

England and Scotland. The best of the sunshine across the south-east.

:12:23.:12:28.

Through tomorrow afternoon, we look forward to sunny spells but also the

:12:29.:12:32.

risk of a few showers. If you catch one, it will be heavy and thundery,

:12:33.:12:39.

especially in the south-east. Tomorrow night, those showers

:12:40.:12:43.

continue across the south-east. It could be heavy and thundery with the

:12:44.:12:47.

potential for flash flooding. Another stuffy night with

:12:48.:12:51.

temperatures 14-16dC. A weather front brings rain from the West

:12:52.:12:56.

which will play through early hours of Friday morning. Behind it,

:12:57.:13:00.

feeling pressure. We have sunshine to look forward to on Friday but

:13:01.:13:03.

with the temperatures around where they should be the September. You

:13:04.:13:08.

will notice the north-westerly breeze. On Saturday, feeling

:13:09.:13:15.

fresher. Those temperatures 16-18dC. Sunny spells and dry weather to look

:13:16.:13:19.

forward to. By the time we go into Sunday, thicker cloud and the risk

:13:20.:13:21.

of rain. We're back with updates

:13:22.:13:23.

in Breakfast from 6:25am.

:13:24.:13:26.
